Archdiocese announces ‘Big Move’ THE C AT H O L I C Archdiocese of Perth has this week announced that it has recently acquired a twostorey property located at 249 Adelaide Terrace, Perth, which will serve as the new operational and administrative headquarters for the Archbishop and the Church here in Perth. Mr Greg Ru s s o, Chief Executive Officer, Archdiocese of Perth, said, “The purchase of this building was a primary objective of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB. We currently operate from various locations within the City and Northbridge. This property will afford the opportunity for us to bring together, for the first time, the Archbishop’s and Church office, the administration and finance departments, and the Communications office of the Church”.

“This will provide significant advantages in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and communication, benefits which will enhance the level of service we provide

to Catholic parishes and the community within this Archdiocese,” he said. The building is currently undergoing an internal fitout and is expected to be

ready for occupancy in early 2016. Part of the required renovations will be the addition of a lift to ensure the new premises provide full access for people with disability.

Archbishop Costelloe reflects on Pope Francis’ letter on Jubilee Year PERTH ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe SDB has today, 2 September, spoken on the release of Pope Francis’ letter regarding the forthcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy and an important initiative. In a recent letter concerning the forthcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has, among other important initiatives, extended the faculty to all Catholic priests to grant absolution in the Sacrament of Penance to 1 | EDITION #47 | 4 SEPTEMBER 2015

those who confess to the sin of abortion. This faculty is granted for the duration of the Year of Mercy, which begins on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (8 December 2015) and concludes on the Solemnity of Christ the King (20 November 2016). This announcement, which extends to the whole Catholic world, is an authority which priests in most parts of Australia have exercised for many years. All priests who

have the faculties (permission to exercise ministry) of the Archdiocese of Perth already have the year-round authority, given by the bishop, to absolve those who confess the sin of abortion. Rather than minimising the seriousness of abortion, which always represents a deliberate destruction of an innocent and defenceless human life, Pope Francis in his brief letter speaks of “a widespread and insensitive mentality” that leads to peo-

ple “not realising the extreme harm which such an act (abortion) entails”. The Pope goes on to reflect on those many women who, “although experiencing this moment as a defeat, believe that they have no other option”. So many of these women, he says, “bear in their heart the scar of this agonising and painful decision”. Pope Francis goes on to insist that “what has happened is Continued on Page 2

Beauty of the family takes centre stage By Marco Ceccarelli THE PERFORMANCE of Perth singer Jeremy Ryan on Australian reality talent show The Voice in July this year had an overwhelming effect on both judges and viewers. The judges were impressed, not only with the 33-yearold’s soul-stirring rendition of an Andrea Bocelli classic, but by the beauty and size of his family, following an on-stage introduction of his wife, Christina, and their seven children after his performance. Viewer ratings for the highly anticipated episode which jumped from the usual 1.4 million to just under 1.9 million - also said something about the public’s interest, and perhaps fascination, in seeing a young couple pursue one of the spouse’s musical talents while raising a large family.

In an interview with e-Record journalist Marco Ceccarelli, Jeremy spoke about life as a father of seven children under the age of nine, his long-standing love of performing arts and classical music and the faith journey that has been an integral part

of his life to date. “At school, I was always interested in theatre and the arts; I always wanted to do acting,” Jeremy said, tracing back the origins of his passion for music. “This is where my relationship with singing came in. It was originally meant to assist

me in being an actor. Once I started, I became quite good at it very quickly and ventured into musical theatre. Eventually, however, I bridged off into classical singing through the influence of my uncle, Chris Waddell, who was an opera singer.” Jeremy’s decision to transition from musical theatre to classical music was not taken lightly. As an aspiring student at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Perth, he was cast in a role where a significant level of vulgarity was required for his performance. He will be singing at the Astor Theatre on 25 September 2015 as support act for the Ten Sopranos. For more information, visit: http://astortheatreperth.com/the-10-sopranos-the-astor-theatre/. Archbishop Costelloe reflects on Pope Francis’ letter on Jubilee Year Continued from Page 2 profoundly unjust; yet only understanding the truth of it can enable one not to lose hope. The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father”. Pope Francis then calls on priests to “fulfil this great task by expressing words of genuine welcome combined with a reflection which explains the gravity of the sin committed, besides indicating a path of genuine conversion by which to obtain the true and genuine forgiveness of the Father”. While some might regard 2 | EDITION #47 | 4 SEPTEMBER 2015

this decision of Pope Francis as a “retreat” from the Church’s firm position regarding the objective evil of abortion, it is in fact nothing of the kind. What it really represents is an affirmation of the Church’s vocation to be, in Christ, the

“face of the Father’s mercy”. Just like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, God waits expectantly for us, ready to throw His arms around us as soon as we return to Him in sorrow, acknowledging the wrong we have done and

longing to return to the security of His loving embrace. As the Pope himself explains: It is indeed my wish that the Jubilee be an experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus testimony to it be ever more effective. We are all fragile sinners, each in our own way. None of us is in a position to condemn others. Pope Francis is inviting each of us to hand ourselves over to the Lord and to His merciful compassion with trusting hearts. He is also inviting us to bring healing and hope to others. No-one is beyond the reach of God’s love, forgiveness and healing.

Archbishop institutes seminarians to ministries at St Charles ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe recently instituted four seminarians to the ministries of Lector and Acolyte at St Charles’ Seminary, Guildford. Seminarians Dominic Sandon, Jhee Baguinat and Nicholas Diedler were instituted to the ministry of Lector, while fourth-year seminarian Tung Vu was instituted to the ministry of Acolyte. Seminary Rector Monsignor Kevin Long said that institution into a Ministry is an important milestone for a seminarian. Reflecting on the ministry of the Lector, Mgr Long said it signifies an increase in spiritual responsibility and, at the same time, marks a historic point - one step closer to the priesthood. “One of the primary ministries of the
