Archbishop opens new Centacare offices By Jamie O’Brien ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe has this week opened the doors of a new Centacare Employment and Training Centre. The new city-based training centre will provide a pathway for students from highly disadvantaged backgrounds to transition from basic adult education programs directly into nationally-accredited vocational training – all from a single location. The new centre marks Centacare’s sixth training site in the metropolitan region, but the first of its centres to initiate follow-on training at the same site for students. In opening the new venue, the Archbishop spoke about the role of Centacare Employment and Training as a LifeLink organisation. “Collectively, LifeLink supported agencies reach out to more than 31,000 Western Australian families and individuals each year, delivering in excess of $50 million dollars in caring services and professional programmes throughout the State,” the Archbishop said. “We reach out to those who are homeless; women and children escaping domestic violence or abuse; people battling drugs and other addictions; people with disability; people with mental health issues; the disadvantaged, marginalised and the isolated,” he said. “We reach out as a direct result of our collective Faith, which compels us to respond 1 | EDITION #46 | 28 AUGUST 2015

Centacare delivers flexible education courses and nationally accredited industry training programs, specifically for disadvantaged and/or marginalised members of the community who are looking to learn new skills or obtain the qualifications necessary to go on to further study, training or employment.

Vinnies celebrates National Op Shop week THE ST VINCENT de Paul Society is this week celebrating National Op shop week across its Vinnies shops. National Op Shop week encourages Australians to do a clean out and donate good quality pre-loved items to their local store. Vinnies WA Retail Operations Manager Tim Lee said National Op Shop week is a way of reminding people to drop in to their local charity shop and see what unique items are available. “Vinnies shops are run by dedicated volunteers and offer pre-loved affordable clothing, furniture, books and bric-a-brac,” Mr Lee said. “Our shops are also a valuable resource for people on low incomes, enabling them to buy quality clothing, furniture and other household items at an affordable price,” Mr Lee said. “Apart from providing affordable goods Vinnies shops are often the first point of contact for people experi-

Archdiocese of Perth in focus at encounter with Pope Francis By Marco Ceccarelli THE ARCHDIOCESE of Perth’s Judicial Vicar and Dean of St Mary’s Cathedral, Monsignor Michael Keating, had the privilege of meeting with Pope Francis on Friday, 26 June 2015, following a Mass at Casa San Marta. Pope Francis concelebrated Mass with more than 20 priests and approximately 50 lay people in the chapel of the Casa. “I was very moved by the Mass,” Mgr Keating said. “As he celebrated the Eucharist, the Pope held up the host and chalice for a long time, eyes fixed on the Body 2 | EDITION #46 | 28 AUGUST 2015

and Blood of Christ, and a look of deep prayer on his face. It has since had a strong influence on my way of celebrating Mass.” In true Papa Francesco fashion, at the end of Mass the Pope met with his guests individually, giving each sufficient time to further introduce themselves and exchange a few words. Mgr Keating spoke with the Pope, thanked him for his encyclical on the environment Laudato Si’ and briefly talked about his background. “I explained that I was Australian and that my Archbishop is a Salesian, a sentence to which the

Pope replied: ‘Perth’. I was pleased and a little amazed at his prompt response,” Mgr Keating said. Mgr Keating was in Rome as part of a trip to Turkey in which he led 34 people to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli. During his stay at the Vatican, he also had the opportunity to meet with long-time friend, Cardinal George Pell, together with Mgr Peter Kenny of Melbourne, who also met with the Pope and Cardinal Pell. About 60 children participate in the program, which provides after-school activities and workshops for children of all ethnicities and ages who face a variety of challenging situations or environments. Activities include sport, cultural and cooking sessions and guest speakers from a variety of backgrounds and industry. Danikka progressed from a participant in the program to become a mentor, and now works for Save the

Danikka has adapted to the challenges of working with younger children, which she said took some time. “I had to get to know them, learn how to communicate

and engage with them, and earn their trust.” Danikka will leave for New York in September to join with other young Save the Children delegates from around the world, to call on the UN to act on issues facing youth in their countries. Before she leaves Australia, she will be joining three other state representatives at

the National Youth Forum in Canberra. Danikka, who is a Noongar member of the Armadale community, is passionate about giving young people a voice, and contributing to positive change in her local area and beyond. She hopes to continue her work with Save the Children after graduating from Mercedes College.

Pope calls September 1 as World Day of Prayer LIKE THEIR Orthodox brothers and sisters, Catholics will formally mark next Tuesday, 1 September as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Pope Francis has decided. The day of prayer, the Pope said, will give individuals and communities an opportunity to implore God’s help in protecting Creation and an opportunity to ask God’s forgiveness “for sins committed against the world in which we live”.

Pope Francis announced his decision to add the annual prayer day to the Catholic calendar in a letter to Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and to Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The text of the letter, dated 6 August, was released by the Vatican on 10 August. Pope Francis said he was instituting the prayer day for Catholics because he shares

the concern of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who initiated a similar prayer day for the Orthodox Church in 1989. Metropolitan John of Pergamon, who represented the patriarch at the public presentation on 18 June of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, had suggested there that all Christians join in prayer on 1 September. “This would mark a step toward further closeness among them,” he had said.

Pop e Francis s aid Christians want to make their special contribution to safeguarding Creation but, to do that, they must rediscover the spiritual foundations of their approach to earthly realities, beginning with an acknowledgement that “the life of the spirit is not dissociated from the body or from nature” but lived in communion with all worldly realities. - CNS Full Text available at

St Dominic’s program connect students in Perth and Myanmar STUDENTS at St Dominic’s Primary School, Innaloo have this year had the opportunity to connect with students living in the Metta Geha Orphanage in Myanmar through a pen pal and giftgiving project. The school introduced the project early in the year, which involved Year 3 and 4 students writing personal letters to send with gifts of stationery items to individual students at Metta Geha Orphanage, which is located in the small town of Kanpetlet. The school also held a ‘rice day’ fundraiser, and used the money generated to purchase educational toys and sporting equipment for the orphanage, run by local resident Tui Tui and her husband, Stephen. The centre is home to some 40 children between the ages of one and 18, who have been affected by poverty. St Dominic’s teachers, Liz Lofthouse and Mags James, delivered the letters and gifts during a three-day visit to Metta Geha during the April school holidays, after journeying to the mountainous area in Myanmar’s western Chin State. The children at the orphanage were delighted with the letters and gifts, and spent hours playing soccer, Connect Four and building with Lego during the teachers’ visit. The two St Dominic’s teachers were welcomed warmly during their stay, and left the Metta Geha Orphanage enriched by the experience and with a greater understanding of humility and gratitude, which they have returned to share with their students.
