New priests called to bear lasting fruit By Marco Ceccarelli THE ARCHDIOCESE of Perth was once again gifted with the fruits of its seminaries last Friday with the priestly ordination of another four men. C ar mine-John (CJ) Millen, Marlon HenaoPerez, Alexis Vega-Osorio and Noe Navarrete-Apaez stepped out of their formative years in Perth’s St Charles’ and Redemptoris Mater Seminaries and into the priesthood in a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Tim Costelloe SDB and attended by more than 900 people. In his homily for the occasion, the Archbishop reminded the candidates that they had been commissioned to “bear fruit that will last” and emphasised that, while this was a moment of both solemnity and joy for them, it must be regarded above all as a gift. “It is simply a gift, freely given and yes, freely received,” Archbishop Costelloe said. “It is God’s grace which has enabled them to hear the Lord speaking to them, it is God’s grace which has given them the strength to respond, and it is God’s grace, and only God’s grace, which will carry them into the future and make of them the priests that the Lord and His Church need them to be,” he added. In light of the ceremony’s second reading, the Archbishop stressed that the 1 | EDITION #24 | 27 MARCH 2015

investiture with the stole and chasuble. Other rites of the ceremony included the Promise of the Elect, the Laying of Hands by the Archbishop and the clergy, the Prayer of Ordination, and the Anointing of Hands using the Oil of Chrism. Concelebrating were Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton, Emeritus Archbishop Barry James Hickey, Very Rev Fr Peter Whitely VG and priests of the Archdiocese of Perth. Communion and Liberation Perth meets with Pope Francis By John Kinder PERTH REPRESENTATIVE of the Communion and Liberation movement, John Kinder, last month met Pope Francis in Rome as part of a meeting with the movement. Below, Mr Kinder shares his thoughts on the experience. What do you say to the Pope when you have ten seconds and there are 80,000 people watching (but hopefully not listening)? This was one of the things going through my mind as I caught a plane one Thursday recently, heading for Rome. That Saturday, 7 March, I was with members and friends of the Communion and Liberation movement who packed St Peter’s Square for a meeting with the Holy Father. The founder of the CL movement, Monsignor Luigi Giussani, died ten years ago last month. So we were there asking for guidance on how to be Christians in a world of such rapid transformation. His words are for all. We must remain true to what we have encountered. How? He quoted Gustav Mahler: “Faithfulness to tradition means keeping the flame alive, not worshipping the ashes”. The Pope cut quickly to the heart of the matter. Christianity is nothing if it is not an encounter with the living Jesus, the one who was crucified and is risen. Just like Andrew and John, the first disciples who encountered Jesus; Matthew in his counting house; Zacchaeus up his tree; and Mary Magdalene in the garden on Easter morning. Today, in 2015, we too are called to encounter Jesus Christ just as truly as those 2 | EDITION #24 | 27 MARCH 2015

without mercy”. Mgr Giussani spent his life drawing people to an encounter with Jesus. This is our life’s work too.

“You cannot understand the dynamic of the encounter that arouses wonder and adhesion without mercy”. Jesus always goes ahead of us, waiting patiently to embrace us in mercy. Francis said: “You cannot understand the dynamic of the encounter that arouses wonder and adhesion

To do this, all charisms in the Church must be ‘decentred’: at the centre, there is only the Lord! “Thus, centred in Christ and in the Gospel, you can be the arms, hands,

feet, mind and heart of an ‘outward oriented’ Church.” At the end of the meeting I was one of a lucky few who met the Pope personally. Among the others was a group of prisoners from Italian jails. So what did I say to him? Nothing worth quoting! What I remember is his gaze on me for those ten seconds. A gaze full of tenderness and affection, of wisdom and strength, and encouragement to begin again. The gaze of a father.

Camino San Francisco to provide a spiritual boost A TWO-DAY walking pilgrimage from Northampton to Geraldton, Western Australia, will take place in early May, reflecting on the spirituality of Catholic priest and architect Monsignor John Hawes (1876–1965). Director of Heritage for the Diocese of Geraldton, Father Robert Cross said the pilgrimage would focus around the built heritage of Mgr Hawes, whose Franciscan spirituality visibly imbues his buildings. The path of the pilgrimage, dubbed Camino San Francisco – or Walk of St Francis – will appeal to pilgrims seeking a spiritual boost. Beginning at the Hawesdesigned Sacred Heart Convent in Northampton and trailing 30km through the countryside, walkers will stay overnight at Our Lady of Fatima in Nanson, before continuing another 30km (the next day) via Nazareth House and St Lawrence’s Church in Bluff Point and then concluding at the Cathedral of St Francis Xavier in Geraldton. “Lovers of history and people who enjoy a walk in the countryside will also appreciate this reflective and spiritual opportunity,” Fr Cross said. “The Camino will provide a clear insight into the work and spirituality that Mgr Hawes put into his buildings, while also taking in the fresh air and stunning scenery of the Chapman Valley.” Monsignor Hawes Heritage board member Julia Weir is assisting Fr Cross with planning the pilgrimage. She said the Camino would add value to the heritage experience of the late priest’s architectural accomplishments. “We want to create an aweinspiring experience,” she said. “The story of Mgr Hawes

is so compelling, it’s of interest to everyone because it has world-class heritage significance,” Ms Weir said. Participants will pay a fee of $220 to cover expenses for the one-off guided walking tour, which will take place from 1-3 May. Fr Cross is seeking a guitarist or flautist to provide reflective music. Celebrating 10 years of medical excellence

THE UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame Australia celebrated the 10th anniversary of the School of Medicine on its Fremantle Campus last weekend. The university held a Mass and Gala Dinner on Saturday, 21 March 2015 to honour those who have inspired and shaped Australia’s first Catholic School of Medicine. Officially opened on the University’s Fremantle Campus on 2 September 2005 by the now Prime Minister, the Hon Tony Abbott, Notre Dame’s School of Medicine has provided an excellent standard of education and training to hundreds of medicine students within a context of Catholic faith and values. Since graduating the first cohort of 74 students in 2008, the school has graduated more than 600 doctors on the Fremantle Campus. These doctors have had a significant impact on the delivery of health care across Australia, particularly in Western Australia and in regional and remote locations. “The school is enormously proud of its graduates and thankful to the staff, volunteers and placement providers who have contributed to their training and education. It also acknowledges the support received from generous donors who provide scholarships and research funds,” said Professor Shirley Bowen, Dean of the School of Medicine, Fremantle. Professor Bowen acknowledged the incredible support of both Perth’s public and private hospitals and, just as importantly, acknowledged the individual doctors who

Alumna of the School of Medicine, Dr Jaimie Drysdale, said Notre Dame’s graduates were highly regarded in the medical profession due to their high level of clinical capability and the ability to think ethically and carry out their roles dutifully.

Fremantle, Professor Mark McKenna, said the school is proud of delivering a medical education imbued with the Catholic values of compassion, respect and service, underpinned by the university’s Objects. “The concentration on a core curriculum as part of a Medicine degree means that our graduates feel confident tackling issues that are important and otherwise

remain unsaid or unaddressed,” Professor Mark McKenna said. Another key unique feature of the school is its emphasis on meeting the healthcare needs of people living in rural communities. The school’s Rural and Remote Health Placement Program is designed to develop medical professionals who are sensitive to the unmet health needs of rural Australians. Twenty five per cent of the student body participates in the joint UWA and UNDA Rural Clinical School which sees them spending the entire third year of their degree in a rural setting. The program received an Australian Government Office for Learning & Teaching Award in 2013. Full Text available at
