Archbishop ordains eight Priests for Perth By Jamie O’Brien PERTH ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe SDB, last Saturday August 1 ordained eight men to the priesthood, encouraging the newly ordained to remember the words of St Paul, who said ‘God chooses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chooses the weak things of the world to shame the strong.’ “Our candidates for ordination today will grow into the good and faithful priests we need them to be if they remember these things: that it is all God’s doing, all God’s grace,” said Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, on the occasion of a historic ordination of eight new priests for the Archdiocese of Perth last Saturday, August 1. “Only God can make sense of our weakness and our foolishness and through them bring strength and wisdom to people’s lives – but only if we let him,” he continued. The ordination took place in front of an estimated 1000 people, including family and friends of the candidates, at St Mary’s Cathedral with cocelebrants Perth Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton, Archbishop Emeritus Barry Hickey, Rev Monsignor Harry Entwistle from the Anglican Ordinariate, VicarGeneral Fr Peter Whitely and special guest, Cardinal Charles Bo, from Myanmar (Burma). from St Charles, Guildford and Fr Michael Moore, from Redemptoris Mater, Morley, were also co-celebrants for the occasion, together with some 100 priests from across the Archdiocese.

Frs Conor Steadman and Patrick Toohey have also both been studying in Rome for the past few years. Fr Steadman will return to Rome in a few months for further study.

“Only God can make sense of our weakness and our foolishness and through them bring strength and wisdom to people’s lives...” The newly ordained priests – Frs Simeon San, Garner Vergara, Stephen Gorddard, Jeffey Casabuena, Israel Quirit, Grant Gorddard, Patrick Toohey and Conor Steadman have all studied at St Charles’ Seminary and the University of Notre Dame Fremantle and originate from Australia, the Philippines and Myanmar (Burma).

Their ordination of the eight men brings the number of priestly ordinations for the Archdiocese to a total of 12 in one year. The Archdiocese has also celebrated four ordinations to the diaconate earlier this year. In the lead up to their ordination, each of the men spoke about a strong desire to serve the Christian com-

munity with whom God will entrust them. Their experiences, they said, conveyed a distinct sense of faithfulness and commitment to their ministry. The intimacy with Christ had sustained their openness to their vocation and had steadily accompanied them on their journey towards priesthood. In speaking about the candidates’ call to the priesthood, Archbishop Costelloe said to be called to such a ministry is an overpowering and even frightening thing. “It is vitally important then for our candidates to have engraved on their hearts and on their minds some other words of Jesus: “You did not choose me – no I chose you”. New Archdiocesan website will find your information By Jamie O’Brien ARCHBISHOP Timothy Costelloe has this week welcomed the launch of the new Archdiocesan website. The Archdiocese activated the new website on Tuesday this week, which features a new major search engine facility that allows users to find exactly the information they are looking for, such as Mass times and parish information, as well as current news and events. In a video to launch the site, the Archbishop said that, over time, he hopes to share on a regular basis, videos, podcasts, views and comments which will afford him the opportunity of communications more directly with the audience. “So, please, take a moment and explore our new site, and do re-visit us again in the near future,” the Archbishop said. The new website, which has been created by Perthbased web-developers OneIT, was born following a strategic review of the Archdiocesan communications in 2009, and has been a work-in-progress for a couple of years. Archdiocesan Chief Operations Officer Terry Wilson said the Strategic Plan’s major goal was “To facilitate the spreading of the Gospel” with a sub-strategy that an effective communication program be implemented so that the Good News and works of the Church are conveyed to our society through all available mediums and technologies. “After broad consultation on the strengths and weaknesses of the current communications systems in the 2 | EDITION #43 | 7 AUGUST 2015

The new site will also be regularly updated with news and information from the Archdiocesan weekly e-newsletter, the eRecord, with selected articles from each edition uploaded on a regular basis. Media outlets have also been catered for in the development, and will be able to

access the latest news and information via a Media Access portal that includes numerous photos from recent events across the Archdiocese. Emmanuel C entre Co-ordinator Barbara Harris said the new site will allow greater interaction with the Archdiocese for those who are blind, deaf and/or hard of hearing. Ms Harris, who has assisted with ensuring the website is disability viewer friendly, said the beaming smiles on a small group of people who recently gathered to preview the accessibility options of the new site, demonstrated the feelings of the test users – who were blind or deaf and/ or hard of hearing - at now being able to engage with the Archdiocese at a whole new level. Test user Geoffrey Scott, who has been deaf from birth and largely uses AUSLAN to communicate, said he was excited to see the captions and AUSLAN on videos. Full Text available at

OBITUARY

Beloved priest from Hamilton Hill, laid to rest MESSAGES of prayers, thanks and fond memories have poured in throughout social media following the death of Fr Julian Luis Matias Carrasco earlier this month – a priest who has been described by many as “a rock” and “a man with a heart of gold”. The beloved priest of the Archdiocese arrived in Perth in 1991 and passed away peacefully on Saturday, 11 July, at Fiona Stanley Hospital after a long battle with ill health. Based at Holy Cross Church in Hamilton Hill, Fr Carrasco passionately dedicated 24 years of his life to the Portuguese, Goan and Timorese communities of the Archdiocese of Perth. Promoting unity among the Portuguese people and teaching the Konkani (Goan) language to local members of the Goan community are but two of the many achievements that can be attributed to Fr Carrasco’s name. The funeral for Fr Julian Carrasco was celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Barry Hickey, assisted by a number of clergy, at Holy Cross Church in Hamilton Hill on Saturday, 25 July. National Vocations Week 2015: Adult faith educator makes canonical commitment to Consecrated Life By Jamie O’Brien A CALL to a mission of prayer and helping others to be receptive to God’s love came to fruition for Dr Michelle Jones last month, following her canonical Consecration to a life of prayer and service in the Carmelite tradition. The Consecration took place at the Chapel of St Therese of Lisieux, at the Catholic Pastoral Centre in Highgate, on Saturday July 18 and was celebrated by Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe. Dr Jones explained that her lifelong vocation, as a ‘Consecrated Virgin Living in the World,’ according to Canon 604, will be lived in affiliation with the Carmelite Order in Quidenham, England. “I’ve always felt very at home in the Carmelite tradition and it’s because for me the Carmelite tradition really expresses the apostolic character of the contemplative life, of the life of prayer,” Dr Jones said. “As St Therese says, ‘my vocation is love’ - she had this profound sense that her ‘yes’ to God’s love somehow affected the very fabric of humanity.” “I’m so very grateful to be able to align myself with the Carmelite Monastery at Quidenham - to follow their charism and to live out my Consecration in their spirit,” she said. Dr Jones came to know the nuns at Quidenham while writing her doctoral thesis on Ruth Burrows, one of the nuns of the Community. Dr Jones will continue her role as Director at the Maranatha Centre for Adult Faith Formation (soon to be

We will never be complete, unless we allow Jesus to be our Way, and our Truth, and our Life... This for Michelle is what today’s celebration affirms Associate Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame Australia. “I’ve felt called to consecrated life since I was about 16 and that’s always been a defining feature of my life,” Dr Jones said. “It’s been a matter of finding the fit that resonates most deeply for me – and this is it.

from my union with Jesus,” she said. “The Gospel reading from John 15:9, where Christ refers to himself as the vine and us as the branches, (which was proclaimed at the Consecration ceremony) gives a fundamental grounding of my identity, my vocation.”

In his homily for the occasion, Archbishop Costelloe spoke about the life of English Anglican lay woman, Evelyn Underhill who said, “If God is real, it is the most important fact of our life. Attention to God is the primary religious act. He is here, now, in this room, calling you, demanding your complete surrender in order that you may become complete. Nothing matters but that demand and your soul’s response.” Drawing upon the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, when he spoke about having a personal relationship with Christ, the Archbishop emphasised that it is Jesus who calls to us inviting us to make our home in and with him. True friendship the key to long marriage for Peter and Barbara By Jamie O’Brien TRUE FRIENDSHIP and remaining loyal to each other has been the key element for a long and lasting marriage for Peter and Barbara Boggon, who this month celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. Peter and Barbara will also this month be among some 100 couples renewing their marriage vows and receiving a blessing from Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB as part of the Annual Marriage Day Mass on 11 August. The Marriage Day Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral on 11 August at 7pm in honour of couples celebrating a significant anniversary. Couples who have indicated their attendance at the event (via Catholic Marriage and Fertility Services), will receive a certificate from the bishops to commemorate the special milestone in their marriage. Married on 29 August 1970 at Corpus Christi Church, Mosman Park, Peter and Barbara have two children and four grandchildren. The couple, who now belong to St Francis Xavier Parish in Armadale, met through mutual friends while Barbara was on holiday in Liverpool, England in 1968. Barbara says that having a Christian marriage was extremely important for her, because it was part of who she was. “The Catholic faith has always been a big part of my life – I have a sister who belongs to the Presentation Sisters; I had been brought

“In front of all the challenges facing a Christian marriage today, it is important we make time to remember the love and unity that Christ has allowed us to experience...” 10 years later at St Thomas Parish, Claremont. Barbara says that, in thinking about her 45 years of marriage, today’s society places a huge emphasis on the need to be happy, but often not with a Christian mindset. “We worked on our marriage,” she said. “We have

each other - we don’t make a decision without consulting each other,” Barbara said. “We are very good friends,” Peter said. Both Barbara and Peter agreed raising children is a difficult task – but that both parents need to be in tune with each other.

“You need to be on the same page. For Peter and I, our Christian ideals were the same, which is most important. “Yes – it’s a challenge, especially considering you (as a parent) always feel like you are being watched - what you’re doing and how you’re doing it (looking after your child),” Barbara said. “You also have to remember that there is another person (your spouse) who has their ideas too,” she said. So what advice would they give to other couples looking to get married in the Church today? “Acknowledge that there is a third person – which is God – and try to walk with Him all the time,” they said.
