Pilgrims head to Adelaide in search of vocation

Your news from across the Archdiocese of Perth

Edition #5

Six new Deacons for Perth Archdiocese

By Marco Ceccarelli MORE THAN 50 young men and women from the Neocatechumenal Way in Perth undertook a pilgrimage to Adelaide earlier this year in search of their vocation. The Gospel passage from St Matthew, ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God’ (Mt 6:3), provided a source of inspiration for the youth as they made their journey across the Nullarbor, after it was chosen by Pope Francis as a theme for the 2014 World Youth Day. A team of Catechists from the Neocatechumenal Way prepared and led the pilgrims on their journey. The youths were encouraged to pray together, share their life experience reflecting on the Gospel and also engage in missionary activity by speaking with people on the streets about the love of God. Passers-by were drawn by the singing and testimonies of these young people and some curiously asked the pilgrims: Who are you? Why have you come here? What is this message you have for us? This gave a chance for the pilgrims to openly speak EDITION #5 | OCTOBER 30, 2014

with fellow tour guides Gilda Rowland and Estelle Dragun. Information and research for the tours has been developed by Ms Wright, with the assistance of former Perth Archivist

Sr Frances Stibi, and various authors and artists who have a strong knowledge of the Cathedral’s history. Ms Wright said that for her, the highlight of the day was having the privilege of helping visitors to the

Cathedral come to a true understanding and knowledge of its history. “It truly is a beautiful Cathedral with so much to offer, and we welcome people from all walks of life,” she said. Tours of the Cathedral took place every 30 minutes on Perth Heritage Day from 9am to 12 noon, and also included a 10-minute recital on the organ by Cathedral musician Jacinta Jakovcevic. Ms Wright also mentioned the tours of the Cathedral take place on a weekly basis, every Tuesday from 10am. Tours are conducted by Estelle Dragun, Julie Maloney and Carol Wright, with four more guides to commence in the coming months. The cost of the tour is a donation.

Pilgrims across Australia seek a vocation in Adelaide Continued from Page 1 -ebrating a Vigil Mass with them on Saturday evening. On Sunday, 13 July, the pilgrims headed to one of the highest hills overlooking Adelaide city, named Windy Point, to pray for the city and its people. The Archbishop returned on Sunday to lead one of the most significant moments of the pilgrimage, the calling for vocations. Twelve young men and eleven young women answered the call for holy orders and entered into a time of spiritual discernment of their vocations. Since then, five of the young men who stood up for the priesthood have joined the seminary. Two holy figures were EDITION #5 | OCTOBER 30, 2014

young, yet lived lives of richness and devotion. They became examples of the power behind the poverty spoken of in the Beatitudes. Their life stories were

Kimberley calling for UNDA student ACCEPTING a teaching role in Western Australia’s picturesque Kimberley region prior to graduating was a simple decision for University of Notre Dame Australia Education student, Alice Fairfoul, who will join Sacred Heart School in Beagle Bay for the start of the 2015 school year. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Care) student, who will graduate from the Fremantle campus in December, says the integration of theory with practical teaching experiences at Notre Dame gives pre-service teachers the necessary skills and confidence to deliver educational outcomes and personalised care to children of all ages. Perth to be blessed with brother priests By Jamie O’Brien

THE LIVES of two brothers are about to make a historical impact on the Church in Perth with the ordination of two brothers to the diaconate next Friday, 7 November. The brothers, Grant and Stephen Gorddard, who are originally from Bunbury, both entered St Charles’ Seminary in 2009 after a period of work and study. Both men spoke of a rich family upbringing in the Catholic faith – which included attending Catholic schools and praying together with their family – parents Robert and Elaine, sister Vanessa and brother Craig. “Growing up, our faith was always the most important thing in our home,” Grant said. Thirty-eight year old Grant said that having a brother in the seminary with him has been a great source of encouragement and support. “It’s a wonderful mystery of God’s providence that I’ve had the gift of my brother with me throughout my seminary formation, of being able to take this journey with him towards the priesthood.” Grant’s vocation, he explained, is a gift of his entire life to Christ and the Church. Prior to the seminary, he worked as a control systems engineer in various industries across Western Australia. In 2005, he began his journey to the priesthood by heading to Melbourne
