Aboriginal Sister offers insight into extraordinary life journey By Marco Ceccarelli and Jamie O’Brien There are still many unknown facts about the history of New Norcia, Australia’s only monastic town, situated 130km north of Perth. Many people, for instance, are not familiar with the story of Sister Veronica Willaway OSB, an Australian Aboriginal Sister from the Yuat Noongar tribe who joined the Benedictine Missionary Sisters of New Norcia in 1958. Currently serving at the Norfolk Priory in Nebraska, USA, Sr Veronica returned to Western Australia in October last year to spend a year volunteering at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry of WA. She recently shared parts of her fascinating and eventful spiritual journey with the Communications and Media Office for the Archdiocese of Perth. “I ORIGINALLY come from New Norcia where my family had lived since Bishop Salvado founded the mission in 1847,” said Sr Veronica. “My parents placed me at St Joseph’s Orphanage under the care of the Spanish Benedictine Missionary Sisters at the age of six.” Sr Veronica went on to say that it was the ‘fashion’ of the children living in New Norcia at the time to try the life at the orphanage and, with her parents’ blessing, Sr Veronica and her five siblings left home and moved into the orphanage. “This became a sort of boarding place for us and we had the best of both worlds – going home each weekend.” Influenced by the life of the Spanish-speaking Sisters and Monks at New Norcia, at the age of 14, Sr Veronica recalls 2 | EDITION #37 | 26 JUNE 2015

it was then that she first felt called to the religious life and entered the convent run by the Benedictine sisters. After a year of postulancy, Sr Veronica was given the white veil of Novice in 1960. Two years later, she made her temporary profession, taking her final vows on 12 March 1966 at the age of 21. While this transition into the formal role as a religious

“I grew up with many of the girls at New Norcia: they knew me as just another girl but, when I became a Sister, I had to explain to them that I had could not be with them [like before], I had things to do. I soon realised that life was going to be different for me, and it was hard to explain this to other girls. “Years later, all my friends and peers were very proud

“In the midst of this period of uncertainty, I felt a call to follow my vocation and go to Spain.” sister began a wonderful period in her life, it also presented numerous challenges - being seen as “different” to her friends first and foremost among them. “It was initially a difficult situation to be in, and it was a lonely path for a while. It took time for people to get used to it.

of me because I was only the second Aboriginal Sister in the Congregation, Sr Cecilia Farrell being the first.” Most of Sr Veronica’s early religious life was spent at New Norcia, working in St Joseph’s Orphanage - which later became a school - enjoying bush walks, excursions to Perth and memorable fort-

nightly holidays in the nearby town of Dongara. In September 1974, she moved to Girrawheen to run a childcare centre for working parents, and was told she would be stationed there for the next 15 years. However, barely a year into her service in Perth, things changed quite drastically for the young Sister as she was told that the Benedictine Sisters of New Norcia had decided to return to Spain and had invited her to join them. “It was a moment of confusion for me, yet somehow, in the midst of this period of uncertainty, I felt a call to follow my vocation and go to Spain.” On 24 March 1975, she boarded the ship Galileo in Fremantle for a six-week journey across the ocean to reach Barcelona, Spain. Papal encyclical appeals for a new dialogue PRESIDENT of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Denis Hart, has welcomed the Holy Father’s encyclical, Laudato Si’. In a media statement issued last week, Archbishop Hart said he was pleased to see that the letter critiques our weak response to ecological and social issues. “Pope Francis calls on people to seek new ways to understand the economy, condemns our throwaway culture and dependence on technology, and is calling on people to reassess the dignity of humanity and the integrity of creation in finding solutions to the ecological crisis,” Archbishop Hart said. The ACBC said it strongly supports the encyclical, stating that his Holiness Pope Francis has challenged ‘every person living on this planet’ to enter into a new dialogue toward building a better future in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’ – ‘Praise be to you’. The statement issued by the

ACBC went on to say that, in dialogue with all people about our common home, the encyclical challenges Catholics to ask ‘how anyone can claim to be building a better future without thinking of the environmental crisis and the sufferings of the excluded’ (13). Director of Catholic Earthcare Australia, Jacqui Remond, said Laudato Si’ is a game-changer for the Catholic community and it offers us in Australia a powerful moral and spiritual imperative for environmental and social action. The encyclical draws attention to pressing environmental concerns such as pollution and climate change, and the use of fossil fuels, while also looking at how climate change is a global problem with serious environmental, social, economic and political implications. Danny has a great feeling about support from Identitywa Continued from Page 1 assistance he has received from Identitywa, Danny says it has been a great feeling. The move was a timely one and, after Danny met with the two other residents a few times, Danny gained assistance with doing all the tasks necessary to live independently, such as various household chores and shopping. Danny works at the Activ Foundation two days a week, then at an antiques shop another day a week, and then has the rest of the week to do gardening, go bowling, or play golf.

“I have represented Western Australia at the National Games and Special Games in ten-pin bowling in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra,” Danny said.

“At Identitywa, all people live with a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging and a sense of wellbeing,” “I have rated 6th, 7th and 8th place nationally and I am really proud of my achievements,” he said. Danny also talked about some of his travels, including

on a holiday (again) like I did some years ago with a cruise to Singapore, then fly to Rome to see the Vatican and hopefully see the Pope, do a tour of the city and walk in

the Colosseum, then fly back to Perth.” Ms Re said that the vison, mission and vales of Identitywa, demonstrated through the assistance provided to Danny, are a constant guide to ensure the organisation maintains the highquality service for which it has become known. “At Identitywa, all people live with a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging and a sense of wellbeing,” Ms Re said. Last week, Friday, 19 June, groups and individuals from across Perth gathered at the Prendiville Catholic College Performing Arts Centre for a night that included everything from explosive music to quiet prayer for Ignite Youth Live. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Ignite lights new flame of new evangelisation IN A TIME when it’s becoming increasingly difficult to sustain local youth groups, Ignite Youth has lit a new flame in the Archdiocese of Perth. In an interview with the eRecord this week, Ignite Youth Co-Ordinator Ronan McGinniss said that, instead of scaling things down, Ignite Youth events are all about scaling things up. Last week, Friday, 19 June, groups and individuals from across Perth gathered at the Prendiville Catholic College Performing Arts Centre for a night that included everything from explosive music to quiet prayer. “A powerful statement is made to society when hundreds of young people gather at a local Catholic youth gathering,” Mr McGinniss said. “We are passionate about

our Catholic faith and we want to showcase the Church to teenagers and young adults who might otherwise look elsewhere for meaning and belonging.” Mr McGinniss went on to say that what impressed him about the night was that, when looking back at what took place over just

and then later on enjoys a conversation with the DJ in the foyer,” Mr McGinniss said. “There is certainly lots going on.” Many appeared to attend the night, said Mr McGinniss, as part of a school group, some with a parish group and others with a friend. “What was clear was that,

“We want to showcase the Church to teenagers and young adults.” two hours, it’s hard not to smile when you see a teenager who comes along for the loud music and ends up being profoundly impacted by the message that was delivered on the night – in this case, by Deacon Aaron Peters. “The same teenager ends up talking with a priest during the Sacrament of Reconciliation

with a large crowd present, the concert-like sound and lighting set the tone perfectly. “If an AFL game is the culmination of grass roots footy, Ignite Live feels like the culmination of grass roots ministry. “We know that a parish is the place that provides for the all-round needs of young peo-

ple as they grow in their faith. “However, we also believe that approaching the new evangelisation seriously means creating a number of flagship events that are attractive to young people and that serve the Church. We have assembled an amazing team of passionate clergy, teachers, youth workers, event co-ordinators and musicians with a wealth of experience.” Ignite Youth is a national ministry which was born in Brisbane, and a local Perth team has formed in partnership with Catholic Youth Ministry in order to offer the successful ‘Ignite Live’ nights in Perth. The recent event was the third of six similar nights being held throughout 2015. For more information and to see video highlights of the events, visit: igniteyouth.com/ perth
