PADRE PIO RELICS: THOUSANDS GATHER TO VENERATE

‘Saint of Mercy’

By Caroline Smith

ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL has this week been filled to capacity by thousands of people who came to venerate the relics of Italian Saint Pio of Pietrelcina – also known as Padre Pio. One of the first opportunities to venerate the relics, last Saturday 22 October, included the rite of the Anointing of the Sick as well as Reconciliation. At the conclusion of the last celebration to venerate the relics on Wednesday 26 October, Cathedral Dean Mgr Keating said more than 8500 people had passed through St Mary’s Cathedral during the five day visit. The Mass on Saturday 22 October was celebrated by Emeritus Archbishop of Hobart, Adrian Doyle and concelebrated by Cathedral Dean, Monsignor Michael Keating and Assistant Parish Priests Father Conor Steadman and Fr Brennan Sia (MC) and Fr GianMaria Digiorgio – a member of Padre Pio’s Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, who had studied and worked with the saint. Fr Digiorgio said he had been invited

to Perth by Mgr Keating, who believed the relics of Padre Pio held particular significance now, as the Catholic community reached the end of the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy. “The Monsignor has been very keen to conduct this special occasion as we reach the conclusion of this Jubilee Year of Mercy,” he said. Fr Digiorgio went on to note that earlier this year, Pope Francis promoted Padre Pio appropriately, as a saint of mercy. To illustrate this point, he told a story of Padre Pio’s meeting with a man who was afflicted by illness and was losing his faith in God. “One night, Padre Pio appeared and wanted to speak with this man. Padre Pio took him by the arm and helped him along the corridor until he was able to walk again: he didn’t realise that he was able to walk on his own,” Fr Digiorgio said. “And the next day, Padre Pio asked him to come to the monastery to see him. And when he went into the Church, he saw a Capuchin priest and realised it was Padre Pio, who told him not to curse anymore.

The arrival in Perth of the relics of Italian Saint Pio of Pietrelcina – also known as Padre Pio – has attracted the attention of many Catholic faithful, who have turned out in significant numbers to view and venerate his relics at St Mary’s Cathedral PHOTO: RON TAN

PARABLES OF MERCY PROVIDE FITTING FRAMEWORK

FOR 2016 PARISH SECRETARIES’ REFLECTION DAY

Parish Secretaries of Perth Archdiocese at the end of the Mass for the 2016 Parish Secretaries’ Reflection Day with organiser of the event, Executive Assistant to Archbishop Costelloe Jennifer Lazberger, (second from right) and Vicar General Fr Peter Whitely (right).

By Marco Ceccarelli

THE PARABLES of mercy present in the Gospel of Luke, whose feast coincided with this year’s Archdiocese of Perth Parish Secretaries’ Retreat, provided a perfect framework for a day in which the role of the parish secretary and the meaning of mercy took centre stage. Held on 18 October, the special day began with a Mass celebrated by Vicar General, Father Peter Whitely, at the historic St John’s Pro Cathedral and continued in St Mary’s Cathedral Parish Centre with a ref lection morning facilitated by Catholic Education WA Catechist team leader Pina Ford. In his homily for the Mass, Fr Whitely emphasised that the parables in Luke’s Gospel: the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son, were at the heart of the Gospel and foundational to reflections on God’s mercy during this Jubilee Year. His observations would

later be at the very heart of the reflection morning in which Dr Pina Ford guided parish secretaries through the meaning of the term “mercy” and encouraged them to share newly discovered insights on the notion of mercy. Dr Ford began by drawing attention to a passage from Pope Francis’ Apostolic E x hor t at ion, Eva ngelii Gaudium, in which the Pope describes his mission of being in the heart of people as not just a part of his life, but as something he cannot uproot from his being without destroying his very self. “I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world. We have to regard ourselves as sealed, even branded, by this mission of bringing light, blessing, enlivening, raising up, healing and freeing,” the Pope writes in the paragraph 273 of the Exhortation. Dr Ford drew a correlation between the Pope’s comment and the role of the parish secretary, stating that the passage contextualised the reflection day for “it frames us

as both personal, individual human beings with our own lives and people who have an important role to play in the Church.” Dr Ford went on to facilitate the reflection day by focusing on God’s relentless and extravagant love towards human beings – a love shown first and foremost through the incarnation and through God’s constant interaction a nd engagement w it h mankind.

In the context of mercy, a term derived from the Latin Misericordiae, which when broken down as Miseri – meaning “misery and poverty”, and Cordiae, the root of which is “heart,” suggests “a heart turned towards the poor and those in need,” Dr Ford singled out three parables in Luke’s Gospel. 2016 MULTICULTURAL MASS: Syrian family feels right at home in Perth By Rachel Curry

NEWLY ARRIVED Syrian family, the Al Gharbis, are a perfect example of the rich cultural diversity that exists in the Perth Catholic community. Ghassan Al Gharbi, his wife Nazha Lowiss, sister Wedad and sons Micheal, Mark and Milad arrived in Perth six months ago, after being forced to flee their homeland to Lebanon, where they lived for five years before being accepted into Australia as refugees. Using his burgeoning English skills to speak for the family, 17-year-old Micheal said they were very happy to be starting a new life in Australia. “We feel good here because it’s better than Syria and Lebanon. There’s no fighting and the people help each other. We feel safe,” he said. As Catholics living in the country’s third biggest city of Homs, the Al Gharbis were part of a religious minority in Syria, where only 10 per cent of 22 million residents are Christian. Micheal said Syria was a wonderful place to live before the war, but everything changed when the multifaceted conflict began as an offshoot of

the Arab Spring in 2011. “After the war started, it was very bad. Muslim people were killing Christians. My little brother and two cousins died because of the fighting,” he said. Despite their past trauma, the Al Gharbis are settling well into Australia. Micheal, Mark and Milad attend Aranmore Catholic College and Aranmore Catholic Primary School, while their parents and aunt learn English at TAFE.

Mr Al Gharbi was a glazier and small supermarket owner in Syria, but said once he had mastered English, he would be happy to take on “any job” in Perth. SECOND RITE OF RECONCILIATION OFFERS REFLECTION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MERCY, FORGIVENESS AND JUSTICE By Caroline Smith

A CELEBRATION of the Second Rite of Reconciliation will next month offer people the opportunity to re-engage with this sacrament and reflect on the benefits of reconciliation and forgiveness in the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The 3 November service will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral at 7pm. Throughout the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has often reflected on the sacrament of Reconciliation, its connection to Christian mercy, and the good that can come from people asking for

forgiveness and reconciling with God. In April, the Pope spoke to several groups of pilgrims, telling them that people needed

to recognise their faults and ask forgiveness, if they wanted to secure peace in the family, community and nation. In his Year of Mercy speech

in St Peter’s Square in April this year, the Pope told an audience of the police and military to be instruments of reconciliation and sowers of peace in their families and workplaces. He went on to say that God does not move away from people when they sin, but rather, seeks them out. "He, seeing us in danger, comes looking for us even more," Pope Francis said, adding that the Year of Mercy offered people a great opportunity to come back to God. Full Text available at

2016 RCIA CONFERENCE

International presenter

places mercy in the spotlight By Marco Ceccarelli

IF POPE FRANCIS were to suddenly walk into this room, what questions on the Jubilee Year of Mercy would you ask him? It is with this question that international presenter Nick Wagner, who travelled to Perth from San Jose in California, USA, began his workshop entitled “Journey to the Source in the Year of Mercy” on the second day of this year’s Christian Initiation Australia Network National conference. With more than 25 years’ experience as leader and trainer in liturgical and catechetical ministries, Mr Wagner delivered two outstanding keynote presentations and facilitated two workshops over the four day conference. Using a dialogic approach which allowed him to ask and receive questions throughout his workshop, Mr Wagner stimulated thinking on the most fundamental aspects of the meaning of mercy for Christians today.

Mr Wagner used a dialogic approach in his workshops based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas on the meaning of “mercy”.

Nick Wagner travelled from San Jose, California, with his wife Diana Macalintal, to present two keynote talks and facilitate two workshops at this year’s RCIA conference

While some of the answers to his initial question regarding Pope Francis’ presence ranged from Why mercy and not something else? What does mercy actually mean? and How would you deal with the unmerciful?, Mr Wagner began to unpack some of the issues raised by framing mercy as “the most important aspect of our faith, the bedrock core of our faith”. Mr Wagner went on to use the Pope’s Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, to explain that if the Church is “to grow by attraction,” then it is the responsibility of Christians to show others that mercy is a gift and not something that needs to be earned or struggled for, it is God’s gift to anyone who seeks it. How do we help those who do not know Jesus Christ, or who are on a journey of discovering Him through the RCIA, understand this? Mr Wagner asked. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe has designated eight pilgrimage Churches and shrines for the Archdiocese of
