MUNJED AL MUDERIS CAPTIVATES AUDIENCE AT 2016 MERCYCARE ORATION

(L-R) Belinda Bosley; Chair of MercyCare Board, Mary Woodford; Munjed Al Muderis and MercyCare CEO Chris Hall at the 2016 MercyCare Oration, held on 22 September 2016.

MORE THAN 600 guests at te nde d this ye a r ’s MercyCare Oration, held at the Hyatt Regency Perth on 22 September. The audience was captivated by the incredible life story of orator Munjed Al Muderis, the pioneering surgeon who came to Australia as an asylum seeker. Mr Al Muderis recounted his life story, describing his experiences as a one-time refugee turned orthopaedic surgeon, author, and human rights activist. As a first-year resident doctor in Iraq, Mr Al Muderis was forced to f lee his homeland after he rejected Saddam Hussein’s brutal orders to amputate the ears of Iraqi army deserters. After surviving a harrowing boat trip, he arrived in Australia and was sent to Curtin Immigration Detention Centre where he spent 10 long months before finally being granted a visa to stay. Driven by his selfless

mission to change the lives of amputees, Mr Al Muderis continued his career in medicine to become a world leader in osseointegration surgery – a ground breaking technique that has enabled amputees, including soldiers wounded in war zones, the ability to walk again. MercyCare Chief Executive Officer Chris Hall said Mr Al Muderis had been invited to present this year’s Oration because his poignant personal story and advocacy work closely aligned with MercyCare’s support for refugees and asylum seekers. “The Oration is designed to raise awareness, educate, inspire and change people’s perceptions of an issue through the telling of one person’s story,” Mr Hall said. “We hope that Munjed’s experiences resonated deeply with the wider community, and promoted a better understanding about why people seek asylum and the challenges they face when

OBITUARY: Innovative and progressive

educator farewelled – the life of Father Peter St John By Marco Ceccarelli

An assortment of personal qualities, virtues and talents have been attributed to Father Peter St John throughout his life, not least among these the kindness and tenderheartedness he showed to those he was surrounded by. A remarkable educator with a passion for teaching, the humanities and sport, Fr St John is remembered for his willingness to help others reach their goals – his many students in particular - and for the dignified way in which he confronted life’s challenges, including the illness which limited him in the final years of his life. Ha v ing se r ve d the Archdiocese of Perth as a Christian Brother for 30 years, and priest for 24 years, Fr St John passed away on 30 August 2016, aged 87. FR PETER ST JOHN was born in Worcester, England, on 19 June 1929. The fourth child of Oliver and Elizabeth St John, at the tender age of four Fr St John lost his mother to tuberculosis. The lung disease almost claimed his own life as Elizabeth was diagnosed while pregnant with Fr St John and was encouraged by doctors to terminate the pregnancy in order to have the best chance of recovering. After seeking counsel from a local Catholic priest, Elizabeth and Oliver were persuaded to place their trust in God, a decision which eventually led to the safe birth of a healthy boy. As the years went on, Fr St John’s father struggled to take care of all the children in his care, which included

two older children from a previous marriage (he had been left a widower once before), and reluctantly decided to place his younger children, including Fr St John, into an orphanage run by the Nazareth House Sisters.

The course of the family’s history would be significantly altered in 1937 when Oliver decided that it would be best for the entire family to migrate to Australia. Fr St John, aged nine, and his older brother Paul, aged 11, were

sent ahead under the care of the Christian Brothers and Nazareth Sisters. Despite Oliver’s intentions to send the rest of the family over, the outbreak of World War II in 1939, combined with difficult economic conditions, put a halt to any further movements. Fr St John would have to wait until 1949 to be reunited with his family during a visit to England. Upon arrival to Australia, the two young boys were housed at St Mary’s Farm School in Tardun (later named Tardun Agricultural College), north-east of Geraldton. As stated by his niece, Pauline Simpson, Fr St John had fond memories of this time, exploring the Australian bush and wildlife and absorbing the academic lear ning exper ience. Eventually, he became so interested in the work of the Christian Brothers that he sought his father’s permission to join their ranks. Despite some persuasion from his father to become a priest, Fr St John was eventually granted permission to join the Christian Brothers and, aged 15, left Tardun to complete his schooling at the Christian Brothers’ headquarters in Strathfield, Victoria. He entered the Novitiate a year later, in 1946. Between 1950 and 1960, Fr St John filled a number of primary school teaching roles in Victoria, while studying at the University of Melbourne to complete his Bachelor of Arts degree. He majored in literature, Latin and history – subjects he was deeply passionate about. Full Text available at

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2016:

FOCUS ON FARMERS AS DROUGHT, DWINDLING POPULATIONS TAKE THEIR TOLL

York mental health advocate, Julian Krieg, has backed calls from Catholic Social Services Australia to support farmers doing it tough during Mental Health Week.

By Rachel Curry

A YORK MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE has backed calls from Catholic Social Services Australia (CSSA) to support farmers doing it tough during Mental Health Week. Starting Saturday, 8 October, this year’s Mental Health Week is again using the ‘Act-Belong-Commit’ message with a focus on suicide prevention as its official theme. Rural Fin ancial Coun selling Service Western Australia Chairman and Australian Men’s Health Forum President, Julian Krieg, told The eRecord it was a good occasion to draw attention to the challenges faced by farmers, who are particularly vulnerable to situational distress. “People are more likely to find themselves in difficult life situations in the bush, because their living depends on seasonal variations,” he said. “That seasonal variation almost doesn’t appear to city people, even though it’s there. If you live in it, it’s there and it’s in your face. The direct impact of something happening in your area can have a real impact on your capacity to cope.”

Another complicating factor is declining rural populations, Mr Krieg said, which denies people going through crises the support they need. “What happens is people become alienated or isolated because of the decline in population. People don’t have as many people as they used to have to talk to, and even less people who they connect with on a spiritual, sporting or social level,” he said. “That’s where I’m coming from in saying that some of these things are quite critical to be managed. By providing counselling services, they’re getting someone to listen to them…If they just bottle things up, that can turn into clinical depression.” Mr Krieg’s comments follow calls by Catholic Social Services Chief Executive, Marcelle Mogg, who earlier this year called on the Federal Government to provide more funding for mental health services in the bush. Ms Mogg emphasised that while farmers were often reluctant to access traditional mental health services, due to stigma and fears around lack of anonymity, tailored services produced better results.

“Evidence from the past two years clearly shows the effectiveness of a community mental health model, and family and relationship counselling services working in rural and remote settings to complement mainstream service providers,” she said. “Investing early in preventative measures, such as developing social cohesion, provides a foundation for the community and individuals to cope when times get tough.” CSSA has developed a proposal for a Rural Community Resilience Programme, which they are calling on the Federal Government to support. Ms Mogg also said the program “meets farmers and farming communities where they’re at and talks their language. PERTH SINGER JEREMY RYAN RETURNS TO CENTRE STAGE WITH RELEASE OF DEBUT ALBUM

Perth singer Jeremy Ryan’s debut album, Someone Like You, will be released on 7 October 2016.

By Marco Ceccarelli

FOR THOSE captivated by Jeremy Ryan’s performance on The Voice in 2015, a compilation of the Perth singer’s best songs will soon be available. Entitled Someone Like You, Mr Ryan’s debut album features 13 tracks offering a music style that blends opera, pop opera (classical crossover style) and 60s classics with a ballad edge. Produced by Melbourne based Pete Dacy and David Cameron - who have worked on albums for the likes of Marina Prior; male lead in the latest production of Les Miserables, Simon Gleeson; Paulini and The Voice contestant Rachael Leahcar - the album is set to be released on 7 October and will be available at JB HIFI, Sanity Music and iTunes. Speaking to The eRecord, Mr

Ryan explained that the idea behind having different song styles in the album was to appeal to a broader audience while showcasing some of his different singing styles. “From composers like Burt Bacharach, Meredith Willson, Bernstein, Donizetti and Puccini to name a few, with the help of the album’s music director David Cameron we came up with a list in the hope of trying to make a few old hit songs new again,” he said. While he has no particular favourites, Mr Ryan believes the version of The Sun Ain’ Gonna Shine Anymore stands out in the album. He also admitted to being particularly fond of the song Maria, for it evokes the name of Jesus Christ’s mother. “Maria being the name of Our Blessed Mother Mary has meant that the song is dear to me. Maria is mentioned 29 times during the song,” he said.

THE eRECORD is produced by the

Executive Producer and former Artist and Repertoire Director of The Voice, Robert Rigby, commended Mr Ryan for the quality of his voice and his versatile singing ability. “He does great justice to the various musical genres on this album from stage musicals, classical favourites, to classic pop standards,” Mr Rigby said. Mr Ryan was classically trained at Perth’s Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAPPA) and has worked in the chorus of the WA Opera for a number of years. His performance during the 2015 Season of The Voice aroused significant interest from the judges and he was one of the season favourites with the public. Aged 32 at the time and married with seven children (six girls and one boy), Mr Ryan placed both the beauty of music and of having a large

Christian family in the limelight. Since his appearance on the show, he has featured as a local support act for international acts “The 10 Sopranos” and, most recently, “The Italian Tenors.” He also performed alongside X Factor winner Dami Im as a soloist for IGA Variety Christmas Carols, as well as performing the national Australian anthem in the Second Test between the Australian and New Zealand cricket teams. Someone Like You is out 7 October and is available at JB HIFI, Sanity Music and iTunes. For more information on Jeremy Ryan’s music, visit his website: www.jeremyryan. com.au. Full Text available at
