Edition #26

Easter celebrations breathe new life into Perth By Marco Ceccarelli PARISHES across the Archdiocese of Perth were filled to capacity over the Easter weekend as thousands of faithful concluded the Easter Triduum with the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday celebrations. The central mystery of our Catholic faith, found in the wonder and joy of Christ’s Resurrection, was recalled in the numerous Easter liturgies and raised as a focal point for the current Easter season. Within the mother church of Perth’s Catholic community, St Mary’s Cathedral, Christ’s Resurrection was re-lived at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, 4 and Sunday, 5 April, as Archbishop of Perth Tim Costelloe led the faithful through one of the most important liturgies of the year. In his homily, the Archbishop encouraged those present to not lose the promise of happiness that Christ offers us at Easter, despite the numerous news of death and destruction taking place in the world at the moment. Referring to the situation of deep instability gripping the Middle East and different parts of Africa and the world, the Archbishop pointed out that this may be a difficult time in which to believe in the Resurrection. He also emphasised, however, that confronting a situ1 | EDITION #26 | 10 APRIL 2015

of large, reflective congregations. Kolbe Catholic College, Rockingham, also put on a memorable performance of the Stations that gripped both students and parents of the school in the lead up to Easter. Others, such as St Jerome’s in Spearwood, processed

around the parish, choosing individuals to carry a wooden cross, a lance and to read each Station. One of the great re-enactments of the Stations of the Cross once again came from the Disciples of Jesus who took to the streets of Fremantle on Saturday, 4 April, to perform a dramatic performance of the passion of the Christ. Although reactions from bystanders were mixed, “after the event, while the musicians led songs of praise, a number of onlookers approached the actors and shared how the drama had touched their life”, said Disciples of Jesus Covenant Community member Reg Firth. Archdiocese of Perth to launch the lives of two pioneers THE ARCHDIOCESE of Perth will next month be launching the biographies of Archbishop Patrick Clune CSsr, by Fr Christopher Dowd, and Bishop Martin Griver, by Odhran O’Brien, at the Redemptorist Monastery in North Perth. The Archdiocese commissioned the books during the restoration of St Mary’s Cathedral, which was completed in 2009. Both Archbishop Clune and Bishop Griver made significant contributions to the design and development of St Mary’s during their respective terms of office. The lives of Martin Griver (1814–1886) and Patrick Clune (1864-1935) also tell the story of faith, empire and social justice during the challenging early years of the local community and Church in the 19th and 20th centuries. As Catholic Bishops, Griver and Clune were charged with both the spiritual and earthly care of the Catholic community in Western Australia. In addition to vigorously travelling the expanse of Australia for their pastoral duties, they built churches and schools, established charitable organisations and campaigned for better social welfare on behalf of the underprivileged. As individuals, they present interesting biographical subjects. A friend of Bishop Rosendo Salvado, the founder of New Norcia, the Spaniard Martin Griver was both a surgeon and a scholar of saintly reputation, His accounts of travelling the Western Australian outback in the 1950s and 1960s give a unique glimpse into colonial life in the antipodes. Meanwhile, Irishman Patrick Clune was a renowned 2 | EDITION #26 | 10 APRIL 2015

preacher who was appointed a chaplain in World War I and later acted as an intermediary between Lloyd-George and the Irish leaders during the Irish War of Independence. These two clergyman have played significant roles in the religious, social and historic

fabric of Western Australia. Now, we honour the lives of Martin Griver and Patrick Clune through these detailed historical works. Archdiocese of Perth Communications and Media Office Editor Jamie O’Brien said Catholics in Perth, and

those interested in the history of Western Australia generally, should be sure to take this unique opportunity of gaining a greater insight into the Church in WA’s foundations. “The story of Bishop Griver and Archbishop Patrick Clune are a great inspiration and testament of the solid foundations in faith that have been forged by our founding fathers for the early Catholic community,” Mr O’Brien said. “With the Church in Western Australia being still quite relatively young, it is very fitting to note that these historical biographies will provide strong examples of faith that has been lived – right here in Western Australia,” he said. The launch will be held on Tuesday, 28 April at the Redemptorist Monastery, North Perth at 6pm. To RSVP, contact 08 9201 1014.

Vincent aims for the heights to help homeless By Jamie O’Brien A SIMPLE PLAN to help the homeless of Perth that was devised by a 10-year-old Whitford Catholic Primary School student is underway for the third year in a row. The plan, which includes providing packs containing toiletries and necessary items, was developed in 2013 after then-Year 3 student, Vincent Pettinchio, was moved with compassion to help the homeless survive life on the streets. The first time the project started in 2013, Vincent aimed to put together 100 packs, with the final figure at 185, and, in 2014, he aimed for 300, with the final figure close to 350. In 2015, Vincent is aiming to make 500 packs. The packs are distributed to the homeless by charity organisations such as (Archdiocese of Perth agency) The Shopfront and St Vincent De Paul Society. The eldest of four children, Vincent is like any other boy his age and loves sports – especially soccer. Vincent says inspiration for the project came after one day walking through the city with his grandparents, and seeing countless numbers of homeless people. “There were four people that I saw that I have not been able to forget,” says Vincent. “These people were all homeless for different reasons,” he said. Vincent went on to say that, while at the time he did not understand how or why people were homeless, he simply wants do what he can to help. “People could be sick and don’t know how or where to get help,” he said. “Some people have to leave

opportunity to meet some of the recipients of the packs two years during a visit to St Vincent De Paul Society. “This made me feel vey happy, but there are more than 14,000 homeless people in WA, of which more than half are between the ages of 12 and 25,” he said. Each

pack is valued at about $40, and monetary donations are also being accepted. With the money donated last year, Vincent was able to make sure that all packs were identical, with many items purchased in bulk, saving money and allowing more packs to be made. And to add to their supply, this year Target Whitford have offered Vincent five per cent discount off all bulk purchases. Donated items can be dropped off at Whitfords Parish until the end of May. from Monday to Friday. Volunteers to assist with putting the packs togethers are also needed.
