Eagles’ ruckman “stoked” to be baptised By James Parker AS THE WEST COAST Eagles unveil the club’s 2015 season catch-cry “The West is Ours”, attention for one player this past week was on higher matters than just the footy season. Eagles ruckman Scott Lycett was reported on Channel 7 News as joining “a bigger team” when he was baptised into the Christian community at Our Lady of the Mission Catholic Church in Whitford last weekend. In front of many of his West Coast team mates, Lycett, 22, explained why he had chosen to be baptised at this point in his life. “I wasn’t raised a Catholic. I wasn’t baptised as a child and I asked Mum and Dad if I had been and they said no, and I thought ‘this is what I want’.” Lycett, originally from South Australia, chose Joe and Pina Tarantolo, his Catholic host parents in Perth, to be his godparents. The couple, who could not have their own children, spoke movingly of the ceremony. “We love Scotty,” they said. “For us, he is our son.” The Sacrament of Baptism was conducted by Whitford parish priest, Father Joseph Tran. In attendance at the ceremony were family members, a selected number of close friends, plus senior players and staff from the West Coast Eagles Football club. 1 | EDITION #23 | 20 MARCH 2015

The ceremony opened with the hymn Amazing Grace, led by club chaplain and local song writer Paul Morrison and included the poignant text from 1 John which speaks of “the love
later picked up for the team’s TV commercial. At the point of baptism itself, members of Lycett’s immediate family and close friends laid hands on him and prayed as Fr Tran poured

Towards the end of the ceremony, Morrison sang a reprise of the song Believe which was recorded for the West Coast Eagles 2012 season launch, and which was
blessed water onto the Eagles’ tallest senior player, baptising him “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”. Lycett’s club mentor, recently-retired ruckman Dean Cox, who was present throughout the ceremony, said, “I feel Scott is really settled, which is a
pleasing thing, as that’s what it will take for him to play really good footy”. Just recently, Lycett signed a four-year deal to stay with the West Coast Eagles. He says that if it had not been for his host parents, now also his godparents, it is unlikely he would have remained in Western Australia and would probably have signed with Port Adelaide. Lycett’s final words at the end of the ceremony seemed to sum up the importance for him of the entire celebration. “Thanks for coming along today to share in this special ceremony with me,” he said. “It means a lot to me,” and “I’m stoked you could make it.”

Staff and teachers gather for new year Commissioning Masses THOUSANDS of Catholic school teachers and staff across WA recently gathered over a three-day period to celebrate the new school year, renew their commitment to Catholic education and welcome new staff members. Principal celebrants, Archbishop Tim Costelloe SDB and Auxilary Bishop Don Sproxton thanked and encouraged staff for their dedication to their students and their contribution to the mission of the Church. Masses were held at St Mary’s Cathedral, celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, and at a number of other metropolitan parishes. The south-west region of schools gathered at St Jerome’s in Munster, which was celebrated by Bishop Don Sproxton and attended by clergy from participating schools. Before the Liturgy of the Word, new staff members gathered in front of the congregation and were commissioned by Bishop Sproxton. Commissioned staff were further encouraged by receiving a blessing from Bishop Don and the congregation who raised their hands over them. 2 | EDITION #23 | 20 MARCH 2015

Mental Health First Aid gets a boost with training THE EMMANUEL Centre has now trained a further 16 people as part of a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course, the first for 2015. There are now more than 50 people from 27 parishes across Perth, including one parish priest, trained in Mental Health First Aid. The self-help centre for people with disabilities and their families ran the course in late February and early March this year, which took place thanks to a generous donation and was facilitated by Tasha Broomhall from Blooming Minds. Emmanuel C entre Co-ordinator Barbara Harris said it is the vision of the centre to have at least two people in every parish trained in Mental Health First Aid so they can assist the parish priest where necessary. “You may have witnessed an accident where witnesses come running to offer help to the injured - generally we do want to help others when we can,” Mrs Harris said.
“However, in our everyday lives, there are often people around us whose lives have fallen apart as a result of broken relationships, major illness, job loss or death of loved ones, among other reasons,” she said. Mrs Harris went on to say that unfortunately, when it comes to mental health, many people are reluctant to offer

Mrs Harris also explained that those who have completed the MHFA course through Emmanuel Centre are ordinary people of varying ages and from a variety of diverse backgrounds. “Some participants work in community service areas,

some have had experiences with mental health issues, either personally or externally, while some have simply recognised a need in their parishes and want to know how they can best offer assistance. “This last course was also attended by three members of the Catholic deaf community who hope to offer support to other Catholic deaf peo-
ple within the Archdiocese,” she said. Mother-of-two and Emmanuel Centre volunteer Judith, who belongs to St Denis Parish Joondanna, participated in the Mental Health First Aid course last year. She said that when approaching someone with a physical disability, we are more likely to offer practical assistance but, when it comes to someone with a mental health issue, “we often don’t know what to do about it”. She went on to say that, with the best of intentions, in a situation of need, people either do too much, (such as cosseting a person in need like a baby) or too little (such as ignoring them so as not to cause embarrassment). “The MHFA course will enable participants to know what to do to avoid both extremes,” she said. For more information about the Mental Health First Aid Course, please contact the Emmanuel Centre on 08 9328 9113 or by email at emmanuelcentre@westnet.com.au. EDITION #23 | 20 MARCH 2015 |

Perth celebrates Apostle of Ireland’s day By Marco Ceccarelli THE EXTRAORDINARY tenacity, fidelity and determination of Ireland’s most famous saint was praised by Archbishop Tim Costelloe this week at the annual St Patrick’s Day Mass, held on 17 March 2015 in St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth. From the entrance procession of banners and delightful Irish dancing, to the delivery of the President of Ireland’s St Patrick’s day message by the Honorary Consul of Ireland to Western Australia - Mr Martin Kavanagh, the event radiated with a sense of admiration for St Patrick and the Gospel message he preached. The celebration was also a testament to the closely intertwined nature of Irish culture and Catholicism and to the pioneering work of many West Australian Irish Catholics who, like St Patrick, actively spread the Gospel and the work of the Church upon their arrival to this far away land. Archbishop Costelloe attributed a significant part of the growth of the Catholic Church in Australia to Irish migrants who brought with them the charism of this great saint. “The faith and the Church which came to birth through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is the faith, and the Church, which St Patrick did so much to spread throughout Ireland,” the Archbishop said. “It is the same faith, and the same Church, which the first Irish arrivals in Australia brought to this land. “The presence of the Catholic Church in Australia,
