Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB will this weekend Sunday 27 March join Ukrainian Catholic Church Eparch Bishop Mykola Bychok CSsR in celebrating a Divine Liturgy at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Archbishop Costelloe, together with Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton and priests from across the Archdiocese, will concelebrate the liturgical service with Bishop Mykola, with leaders from all faiths in Perth also invited to attend to join in prayer for those suffering and affected by the war in the Ukraine.

With COVID-19 restrictions limiting the maximum number able to be present to 150 people, the service will be livestreamed from St Mary’s Cathedral’s YouTube and Facebook. Watch the service at www.youtube.com/stmarysperth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe invited the whole Archdiocese of Perth and local community to pray that the God of compassion will inspire compassion in all of us, especially for the people of Ukraine at this time. “Shaping and moulding us into people whose hearts are moved by the sufferings of others and who try our best to do whatever we can to help,” Archbishop Costelloe said.

“The need for generous, largehearted compassion will always be present in our broken and fragile world,” he said Pope Francis last week announced that on the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord on Friday, 25 March 2022, he will formally consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

ARCHDIOCESE OF PERTH MARKS 10 YEARS OF ARCHBISHOP COSTELLOE’S SHEPHERD LEADERSHIP

Perth Archbishop Timothy John Costelloe SDB on 20 February, marked 10 years of service as senior leader of the Perth Catholic community, with a message consistent to the one he delivered when he was first installed as the nineth Archbishop of Perth.

“I continue to hope and pray that, through my ministry of service and leadership in the Archdiocese, we the community of the disciples of Christ, might become more and more, as the first Letter of Saint Peter puts it, “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, so that we might proclaim the mighty deeds of Him who has called us out of darkness into His own marvellous light,” he said.

“That light is Jesus Christ. It is to Him that we commit all that we have and all that we are. It is to Him that we entrust the journey into the future which we set out on together.”

In acknowledging his gratefulness on the milestone, Archbishop Coselloe opted out of an extravagant celebration, instead, kept busy with

the many tasks at hand, including his role as Plenary Council President.

Born on 3 February 1954, the second son of Francis John (Jack) and Carmel Tasma Costelloe (nee Roadknight) was ordained a priest on 25 October 1986, by sixth Archbishop of Melbourne Sir Frank Little KBE, in Melbourne.

Surrounded by the Church community, Archbishop Costelloe received Catholic Education in all his schooling years.

“My family were regular Mass goers and being Catholic just seemed quite natural to me, an essential but, in a way, an unremarkable part of life.”

“My parents were not wealthy and made enormous sacrifices to make sure my brother and I received a Catholic education. Home, school, and Church were the harmonious backdrop to my formative years. I was very blessed.”

Fresh in the workforce, Archbishop Costelloe assumed a part-time role as a salesman in a variety of menswear stores. It was during this time he recalls his vocation to the priesthood growing.

Archbishop Costelloe began his studies in a teacher training course at Christ College in Melbourne, which

he interrupted in 1977 to join the Salesians of Don Bosco - receiving his Final Profession in 1985. The Archbishop’s accomplishments followed over the years; Religious Education Coordinator at Chadstone’s Salesian College (three years), completing his Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the Salesian Pontifical University in 1991, and lecturing in Systematic Theology at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne, with a focus in the formation of young Salesians.

In 1996, Archbishop Cosstelloe was transferred to Perth where he assumed the roles of Parish Priest of Victoria Park St Joachim Church on 30 April 2007 and Lecturer in Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle. Subsequently, he completed his Doctorate in Theology from the Melbourne College of Divinity. He recalled one of his highlights during this period in 1998, when he was selected to attend the Synod for Oceania in Rome as the theological adviser of then Archbishop of Perth and his predecessor, Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey.

PARTNERSHIP WITH INKA IS WELL ON THE WAY

There was lots of excitement in the air when participants gathered with their families at what will be their new home.

Work is well underway on the two houses in Koondoola that are being built with an innovative construction method which sees quick results. The homes are architecturally designed to accommodate three people with their own bedroom and ensuite and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas.

“We are looking forward to the completion of this project which is being delivered faster and more efficiently than traditional building methods, including the latest smart technology and environmental features while complying to all the requirements of the National Disability Insurance Schemes’ Specialist Disability Accommodation Standards for Improved Liveability,” Identitywa CEO Marina Re said.

At Identitywa’s February 2021 Board meeting, Board Chair, Graeme Mander and Managing Director of Zorzi Group David Reynolds, signed a collaborative agreement that will see INKA, led by General Manager Danielle Devereux and Director Wayne Randall, construct six residential homes for Identitywa participants.

These newly constructed homes will utilise innovative construction methods from a ‘state of the art’ Perth based manufacturing facility. They will be delivered in line with INKA precision in craftsmanship and focus on energy efficient sustainable living. This progressive construction method will see significant reductions in build timeframes, adding tremendous value in addressing the housing shortage that is currently impacting Western Australia.

“Our collaboration with Zorzi and INKA will create houses designed around the specific needs of people with disability, which is a perfect fit with our vision to build a community where all people live with a sense of purpose, a sense of belonging and a sense of wellbeing,” said Identitywa Board Chair Graeme Mander.

The homes will be architecturally designed to accommodate three people with their own bedroom and ensuite and spacious indoor and outdoor living areas.

“This is a very exciting time for us,” Marina Re said.

“Our Board recognised some time ago the growing need to provide modern, well designed and fully accessible homes for people with disability who require housing.

“We are delighted to be working

with the team at Zorzi and INKA. This important initiative is one of the focus areas of our 2025 Strategy,” she added.

“We are looking forward to the outcomes of this project which promises to be delivered faster and more efficiently than traditional building methods, including the latest smart technology and environmental features while complying to all the requirements of the National Disability Insurance Schemes’ Specialist Disability Accommodation Standards for Improved Liveability.”

There is currently a shortage of accessible housing in the Perth metropolitan area and Identitywa is hoping that this partnership will lead the way in creating more opportunities for people to live in quality homes of their choice. FOOD FOR THE SOUL AT THE EMMAUS COMMUNITY’S CAFÉ

Five months since mental health advocates Emmaus Community launched the Mama Lili’s Goodwill café on 13 October 2021, with the vision to encourage its members to practise healthy eating and understand good nutrition, and Emmaus Community Founder Brother Al Archer shares with The Record, what inspired this space and how food impacts a “Healthy Body: Healthy Mind.”

1. Where did the name of this café come from and what is the concept of this new gathering space?

Mama Lilli’s is named after Lily Archer who is the co-founder of Emmaus Community and my mother. Lily was the matriarch of Emmaus who lived in the community and loved the Community members as family. She passed away at Emmaus

Community in 2016 and continues to be loved and missed by all.

2. What has the reception been like since the opening of the café? What are some of the changes you have witnessed in terms of environment and bond between community members?

At the end of 2021, we opened Mama Lilli’s Goodwill café. This free café provides a space of hearth and healing for our community members and others in need. The response has been astounding to such a simple idea.

3. Why was it important to build this space?

We provide regular home cooked meals, good coffee, and a space to inspire healthy eating and an understanding. Plus, the added benefit of a relaxing space to enjoy the company of friends and shared meals. This is a space where we gather regularly and host various events. A recent event-celebration was celebrated at the Cafe for the

10th anniversary of our partners Coles and SecondBite.

We’ve also been running “good eating” workshops with James – our community chef, a former international chef and culinary olympian who shares our vision of "good food providing a pathway to a healthier life".

4. Besides the café, what are the other facilities or services available at Emmaus now?

Emmaus is constantly evolving to facilitate the ever-growing demand of people who need sanctuary. We try to live and love the best we can in these uncertain tumultuous times. Knowing the one certainty is that Christ is with us all the way. We are the midst of building two new facilities that will create 10 new vacancies for our brothers and sisters in the beginning of 2023.

The new Mama Lili’s café operating since 13 October 2021, is a regular gathering spot for its’ members. Along with good food and conversation, the café also hosts “good eating” workshop with community chef James who shares their vision of "good food providing a pathway to a healthier life".
