Sisters open the doors for inquirers

Australia’s youngest women’s Catholic Religious community is opening the doors to women who would like a taste of how its members live, work and pray. They also revealed what they wear to bed.

THE Missionaries of the Gospel, based in the Perth suburb of Willagee, are inviting interested women to come and live their way of life from January 22-24 with an option of applying to stay on for a few more days until January 28.

They are somewhat chatty and have supplied the answers to the following questions:

Who are you guys?

We are Missionaries of the Gospel. Some people call us John Paul II Sisters, because we follow Christ in the footsteps of our late Pope John Paul II. It is his charism and spirituality and mission in the Church that our community is founded on.

How many of you are there?

Three. Usually we are then asked how many sisters are there including other parts of the world. People are often surprised that in the whole world there are only three of us.

We are in no hurry to grow beyond the little steps that our Lord seems to be taking with us. There are many lessons we have to learn (usually from experience!) and it is important that our foundation is a solid one.

Are there priests, brothers or lay people in your community?

Not yet. We hope there will be one day. Where do you live?

We live in a residential house in Willagee. We call it a convent because it the home of sisters, but from the front it looks like any other house. We are very blessed to have such a home. As I’m sure you know, in the past, many of those who began something new, started out in far more humble abodes.

How are you different from other communities?

The MGs are not distinguished by a particular work like teaching or nursing. We believe that the main charism (or gift of the Holy Spirit for the Church) of John Paul II was his way of being in relationship, with others and with God. This is hard to explain in a few words here. However, we have found many who do not need words, because they experienced our charism by simply being in the presence of JPII.

What do you do for work?

The apostolate of the sisters falls under three broad headings of Evangelisation, Formation and building community. We try to find creative ways to help others encounter Christ, realise their dignity and live the Gospel, by making the Good News relevant and real for them.

Do you work in your parish?

We are not parish-based like many other groups, so whilst our work may be available at a parish level, our focus is first on the needs of the diocese.

Can I catch up with you and the sisters?

In the future we hope to reach out to more people and help them according to our mission. But at the moment we are still in formation, so the work we are doing is limited in order to provide the space to be well prepared. We describe it as a cocoon of our time in the desert.

How long will that go for?

Though there are some directions under canon law, the way an order will form their sisters can vary significantly. In our community, the first stage is postulancy. This period of 12 months is a time of ‘asking’ both for the community and the postulant.

The next stage is novitiate. Here the novice spends two years in intense formation.

Contact is reduced for all three years, but most especially for the canonical year of novitiate, which we are currently undergoing. Upon completion of novitiate, we receive the full habit, and make temporary vows. These are renewed yearly for five years before final vows are made.

Why do you change your name when you make your vows?

There are several occasions in the Bible when our ancestors received new names because of the new mission or state of life they were beginning. This is an old tradition that a few communities like ours maintain. Whilst we don’t mind if people call us by our baptismal name, our new name is a reminder of our being set apart for God and His work.

Do you have an age limit?

Women must be at least in their 18th year and have not reached 30 years of age. How do you live, where does your money come from?

Like a few other communities in Australia, we live solely on Divine Providence. We do not receive regular and expected income from any source. We have been very blessed to witness how God provides through the generosity of both friends and strangers, from $10 in an envelope after Mass to a box of vegetables on our doorstep.

We don’t have much, but we have never had to go without something we needed. And what do you do if you have too much?

Our policy is only to keep that which can be used for our work or for the welfare/care of the sisters. Twice a year we will re-examine what is in the convent to see what can be given away. It does not happen very often, but if we have too much food or something we don’t need, we deliver these to someone who needs them more than us.

Why do you wear the veil (or habits)?

To this question, one of the novices recently explained that Sr Bernadette wears a veil because her head is very blotchy! In truth, we have seen wisdom in the Church’s direction to wear a common dress and be a witness for others. It is not easy and Sr Bernadette has endured

abuse from some who are unhappy at the presence of a sister, but there are so many fruits that have flowed from people knowing who we are, and knowing that we are available for them to approach and talk to.

What is the symbolism of your habit?

The royal blue colour is to remind us of our Blessed Mother and Queen- Mary, who is a model for us in religious life. The white veil reminds us that we are brides of Christ who are called to try to be spotless and pure.

The white also reminds us that even if we complete our novitiate, we are always novices, always learning. The rope represents the vow of obedience and is taken from the Gospel of John when Peter is told that he will be taken places he would rather not go. The capuche signifies our Lady’s mantle that protects us who have entrusted ourselves to her.

What do you wear to bed?

It is amazing how often this question is asked! Though we wear the habits every day regardless of where we go, we don’t wear them to bed.

Do you have hair under your veil?

We keep our hair short for several reasons.

What time do you get up in the morning?

We begin prayer at 5:15am.

What do you do all day?

Whilst we are in formation - we have about four hours of prayer throughout the day, several classes, study, work, meals, recreation and exercise. We have a balanced lifestyle that is centred on teaching us to grow in love with God and those around us.

Do you have or want a TV?

No.

Do you visit your family often?

Visits with our families are reduced during formation but we still maintain regular contact.

Who is responsible for your community?

Ultimately, it is the Archbishop. For things on a day-to-day basis, there is consultation between the sisters and the final decision lies with the person the Archbishop has appointed Mother Superior.

Why did you choose to be a sister?

Obviously this answer is different for each sister because we did not fall for a common idea but a person whose call for each of us was personal. One thing that seems common though, is that we were searching for something more, and found a love that was stronger than anything we had experienced, enabling us to sacrifice the temporary delights that we had known.

Faith centres Wildcats in temptation’s arena

Nick Marvin and Kevin Lisch exist in a world that could be a den of temptation if not for their faith keeping them centred. The values inherent in their faith even helped save the club from extinction. ANTHONY BARICH reports.

The once financially-stricken Perth Wildcats have gone from being on the brink of folding to being a national powerhouse under the guidance of Catholic chief executive Nick Marvin, who has worked to instil values in the team that are also inherent in his faith.

Though the Wildcats are the most successful sporting club in WA with four national championships and 20 consecutive finals appearances over the past 25 years to their credit, “something was fundamentally wrong” Marvin said. For over a decade the club had failed to win a championship.

Indian-born Marvin, a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Willagee, was recruited to the Wildcats in 2006 when Americanborn businessman Jack Bendat bought the club. Marvin had previously been a consultant advising companies losing money, and he arrived at the club with the National Basketball League also on the way down the gurgler.

Months after arriving he concluded that, if it were any other commercial enterprise, the smart option would be to shut the club down. Among a raft of big problems was that the club was burning through money on fancy players who were not producing results.

Over the next two years the National Basketball League progressively struggled and last year was on the verge of collapse, together with the Wildcats.

But Marvin and Bendat decided to fight. Collaborating with other clubs, they reformed the League. While the NBL effectively folded at

the end of 2008, a new-look NBL re-emerged in March 2009 minus a team from Sydney or Melbourne. Of all the teams in the NBL, the Perth Wildcats underwent the greatest transformation.

Under Marvin’s guidance, and among other measures, the club slashed $1.5 million worth of staff. The Wildcats hired a new coach, Rob Beveridge, and developed “a new matrix” of character by developing a new culture. At the level of individuals the club has improved, Marvin says.

“That’s the focus,” Marvin said at the Disciples of Jesus event in November. “It’s just a bonus that they sat on top of the ladder for a time this season and have sold out their games for the past two and a half years.”

This year, in an unprecedented move, he made players sign contracts that included a zero-tolerance policy in regards to off-field shenanigans – including in the off-season - in order to address the same kinds of issues that have plagued other elite competitions like the AFL, NRL and cricket.

Players are required to participate in 350 hours of community service as opposed to the 150 that’s standard across the league, including work with schools, hospitals, juvenile detention centres and rural communities.

The Wildcats also partnered with the WA Government to promote its Alcohol: Think again initiative to fight binge drinking among youth, because getting drunk is not, Marvin says, a prerequisite to

Is it true our Company philosophy is “We are a friendly and efficient company trading with integrity and determined to give our customers the very best of service?”

Is it true I regularly publish testimonial letters from satisfied customers praising us for our outstanding level of customer service?

Is it true that although I spend a lot on advertising, most of my sales are from a combination of personal recommendation, repeat business and reputation?

Is it true I sell on average over 1400 vehicles every month, which is the highest in Australia from one location.

enjoying life. Such measures fall under under Marvin’s philosophy that “we exist to inspire and entertain through excellence”.

Under the new approach, winning was no longer the only priority – again, unprecedented for a professional sporting club where sponsorships worth millions of dollars are at stake.

Some players didn’t like it. Much to the chagrin of parochial basketball fans who love supporting West Australians, Marvin terminated the contracts of two local boys because they would not agree to the community service.

“I copped flack for it, but I stood by my decision,” Marvin said at a Disciples of Jesus youth event called Conquest in Osborne Park on November 25.

Kendal ‘Tiny’ Pinder excepted, basketballers in Australia are not under the microscope as much as footballers for their extra-curricular activities, but the pressures are just the same, Marvin says.

“You’re always up on a pedestal during or off-season,” he said.

“It’s not easy to be role models. Sportsmen go through different sorts of ups and downs than others, and drinking helps sometimes. They must resist the temptation.”

It’s apparent, he says, in the way the Wildcats now play – for others rather than for themselves.

“If you have the perspective to look out for others, it reflects on the court,” he says.

Kevin Lisch, a US import who grew up in Belleville, Illinois, is an example of Marvin’s new policy of recruiting exceptional players who share the club’s vision of valuesbased workers rather than millionaire superstars who go off the rails.

Lisch earned his way up the basketball food chain with a scholarship to the Jesuit St Louis University studying Business Administration before Marvin nabbed him and found him City Beach parish to help him get settled in Perth.

“At university, service to others took a back seat to winning,” Lisch says.

He survived university relatively unscathed because, he says, he was brought up in the faith in a family where basketball was a recreation, not an obsession; his friends respected his values; and regular

prayer. His father, an NFL quarterback who played college football with the legendary Joe Montana, was also a positive role model for him, he says.

While he admits to “white-line fever” – becoming aggressive on the court to win – once he steps over the line he has to let it go; not let it out at the pub.

“It takes discipline to let it go. I still struggle with it,” he says. “At college, there were lots of temptations. After games guys go out and it’s all about how many beers and women you score.

“It comes down to praying a lot about every little decision you make day to day which forms the way your life pans out. There’s always time in the day to fit in a prayer life.”

The key to maintaining a prayer life amidst such a lifestyle, he says, is to stick to a routine and never put things off – especially prayer. Five or ten minutes in the morning, again before going to bed … even a silent moment alone to calm down after practice to let God speak helps centre oneself, he says.

With a new culture that defies that of many sporting clubs around the globe, the Wildcats now have a unique reputation. Some players have decided not to come to the club because of this policy. But Marvin doesn’t care.

“The worst thing you can do for an athlete is give him spare time,” Marvin says. He all but forces players to take up training and jobs outside of basketball so they have transferable skills after their sporting careers end, usually around age 35; sooner if they have a bad injury and a club considers them a liability.

“There’s resistance to that, but that’s a choice they need to make,” he says. “I’m obsessive about giving players tools for life after sport.”

If asked or challenged, he explains his faith in “secular terms” in the basketball world as one of the key tools he uses to make key decisions in his life.

To Marvin, holiness comes in exercising integrity in the decisions made in everyday life by turning to one’s faith for wisdom.

One of his first policies was to forbid swearing in his office. When he arrived at the Wildcats, the pervasive “macho culture” was rife. As far as Marvin is concerned, swearing is a sign of weakness.

“Real men are in control of their faculties,” he says. While his nine to five job “forming 12 honourable men” is important, his family is his top priority. When he pulls into his driveway at 5pm, the next two hours are ‘peak hour time’ when he must help his wife feed, shower and put to bed four children.

“The path of least resistance is to watch TV, and sometimes it’s tough, but I often say a prayer as I pull into the driveway that I give my best in those two hours when those five souls need me the most,” he says.

New Gingin church approved THE PARISH

THE parish of Gingin/ Chittering is about to hit its fundraising stride with news that Archbishop Barry Hickey has approved the building of a new parish church in Chittering to be named after the Divine Mercy.

Five years after the completion of the much-lauded St Anne’s Church in Bindoon, Parish Priest Fr Paul Fox said that the new church will be somewhat similar to it in style but much bigger owing to the expected long-term population growth in the area.

Speaking to The Record last week, he hopes the church will be an inspiring place of worship and of pilgrimage.

“Our aim has to been to design a most beautiful church which is uplifting and yet very functional for the liturgy; a place of welcome,” Fr Fox said.

“St Anne’s in Bindoon, built out of local stone, has proved that most people appreciate this style of architecture, as indicated by the steady stream of visitors each day to the church. The whole community, regardless of religious denomination is very proud of St Anne’s; we hope that the new Divine Mercy church will prove to have the same attraction.”

The church has been designed by Peter Anthes with 3D rendering of the plans currently under-

way. The Divine Mercy Church will be built on Maryville land donated to the archdiocese by the Prendiville Group. This site will also be home to a Catholic school as expected population growth in the area materialises.

When completed, the church will be the first in the archdiocese to be named in honour of the Divine Mercy. This devotion derived from the diary, “Divine Mercy in my Soul” by of Polish nun, St Faustina Kowalska, details revelations she received up until her death in 1938. St Faustina was canonized by Pope John Paul II on the 30th April 2000. The name was adopted because of the strength of devotion to the Divine Mercy in the Parish. Fr Paul has appealed for donations and prayers, an appeal Archbishop Hickey has endorsed in his letter of approval.

“We have a generous benefactor but will need many more donations to make this church a wonderful reality.”

Donations for the Divine Mercy Church can be sent to Divine Mercy Church Building Fund: 39 Brearley Street, Bullsbrook, WA 6084 or by calling 9571 1839. For more information, including Archbishop Hickey’s letter of approval, visit www.ginginchitteringparish.org. au.

Knights put faith in action for the poor

WHAT makes a few good men get up early on a Saturday morning?

The gym, breakfast with friends, a day at the beach? They all sound plausible, but on December 19, the men of the Faith in Action (Leederville) Branch of the Knights of the Southern Cross led by Frank Colangelo and Tristan Kolay did something different.

bread, they put Faith into Action and served a pre-Christmas breakfast to over 40 underprivileged locals at the Christian Centre for Social Action in East Victoria Park.

Being the face of Jesus, the Knights found much mutual good in conversing and connecting with the poor including children as young as eight, as well as performing community service as a team of Catholic men. Through the simple act of sitting down and

God’s promise requires a response: Benedict

VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Having respect for every human being and for all of creation as God’s handiwork and having trust in God’s overwhelming love are the keys to peace and to a better future, Pope Benedict XVI said.

Marking the new year with the January 1 celebration, the feast of Mary Mother of God and of World

sharing breakfast over a chat with the needy, these Knights deepened their understanding of the true Christian meaning of Christmas and also physically and socially nourished the lives of some newfound friends. The Knights of the Southern Cross is an Order of Catholic men committed to promoting the Christian way of life throughout Australia.

Peace Day and with Angelus recitations on January 1 and 3, Pope Benedict reminded Christians that God’s promises require a response.

“The divine plan is not accomplished automatically, because it is a plan of love and love generates freedom and asks for freedom,” he said during his January 3 Angelus address.

While God’s kingdom of peace and justice already is being realised on earth, he said, “every man and woman is responsible for welcoming it into his or her own life day by day. So 2010 will be better or worse to the extent that people, accepting their own responsibility, learn to collaborate with the grace of God.”

Morley grandmother of six’s labour of love for chaplaincy

CATHOLIC grandmother of six Jean Prendergast has just completed an 84 hour labour of love that reflects both her commitment to school chaplaincy and the importance of the vocation itself.

Jean, secretary at the Bayswater/ Morley YouthCARE District Council, has been involved with YouthCARE, WA’s chaplaincy body, for close to 20 years.

She starting pursuing her passion - painting - after retiring as a school teacher in 2002 and recently received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University. She also recently used her talents to produce a colourful mural depicting students and YouthCARE Chaplains in her District Council for her Church’s Ministry Fair.

The mural, which took Jean more than 84 hours of intensive painting to complete, features YouthCARE Area Chaplain Terryl Denton and chaplains Samuel Oey, Jessica Kennedy and Paul Mongague.

It was moved to YouthCARE’s offices in Morley after the completion of the Ministry Fair.

The idea of expressing her passion for chaplaincy in such a creative way came to mind when her Church, the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Morley, extended an invitation to members of the parish to get involved in the Church Ministry Fair. The Fair showcased the work of over 30 different ministries.

“After hearing about the event, I went home and thought, ‘I can do this’. I can create a backdrop to reflect my passion for our ministry, chaplaincy,” she said.

As Jean previously painted very large frescoes for the Garrick Theatre as a set artist and was also involved in producing murals for various school plays, she decided to personalise her latest work of art with YouthCARE staff.

“People are drawn to people,”

Archbishop’s farewell to a beloved worker

ARCHBISHOP Barry Hickey, his Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton and five senior priests of the Archdiocese concelebrated the first Mass in the Sanctuary of the Blessed Sacrament in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary to wrap up the 47-year career of the Archbishop’s communications manager Hugh Ryan on December 23.

Stunned that the Archbishop and his Auxiliary would offer to celebrate the Mass for his retirement, Mr Ryan said after the Mass that working for Archbishop Hickey has been the highlight of his career that has included working for WA Premier Charlie Court among others, and as chief of staff at The West Australian

she said. “I am not scared of big ideas and big brushes.

“Actually, I was very excited and enthusiastically transformed our living room into an artist’s studio.

“Our fridge was off limits during periods when I needed to prop up the fresco against it,” Jean laughed.

Even her husband Trevor’s house paint came in handy and soon Jean used twenty tubes of her artists’ acrylics to produce the awesome end product.

Why is she such a passionate supporter of chaplaincy?

“Chaplains are often the only staff members who can embrace children’s needs at that given moment, which is crucial,” she said.

“The fact that chaplains do not have a disciplinary responsibility within the school and can listen non-judgementally is another bonus. It costs less to employ a chaplain than to keep a person in jail. They do amazing work, but all in God’s time.”

The Archbishop’s executive secretary Fr Robert Cross, Vicar for Clergy Fr Brian McKenna, former Dean of the Cathedral Mgr Thomas McDonald and Archdiocesan Office for Evangelisation head Fr Michael Slattery also concelebrated.

Referring to Mr Ryan as “our beloved worker”, Archbishop Hickey said his communications manager since September 10, 2001 had a key role in helping him proclaim the Good News while assisting him in writing scripts and dealing with an often hostile secular media.

After celebrating the Mass in thanksgiving for Mr Ryan’s “faithfulness, application of duty and wisdom”, the Archbishop told The Record that he knew his communications manager was right for the job, having easy relationships with secular media; and “he knew how to handle Charlie Court, so handling me was child’s play”, he joked. Mr Ryan’s role was central, he said, as “one has to use modern media to promote the message of Christ and the works of the Church and comment on issues that touch on morality in the public arena”.

“His links with the media were vital, and have taken a great weight off my mind,” the Archbishop said.

The Archbishop will replace Mr Ryan in time but the communications role will change and will likely be split in two, with a special emphasis on utilising modern communication technologies.

Bishop Sproxton said he saw Mr Ryan as a mentor, preparing him for an interview with The West Australian, and helped him to see that “journalists are only human” as he was previously apprehensive about meeting them in the secular arena.

The role of media in the Archdiocese is evolving, he said, and Mr Ryan “set the foundations” for this. He is believed to be the second communications manager of a Perth Archbishop after Archbishop William Foley previously employed one.

The Record editor Peter Rosengren said that Mr Ryan, who wrote most editorials for the newspaper in recent years, had become a father figure to many at his office, whose approach to journalism “always brings us back to what we should be doing – pro-

fessional journalism, telling the truth, not just truth as we like to tell it”. Mr Ryan’s editorials, he said, were “masterpieces – cool, measured, rational, and, in a calm way, demolish insane things happening in society today and propose other things, while writing of the beauty of the Faith and the history of the Church”.

Mr Ryan, an Ocean Reef parishioner, said that his biggest challenge during his time under Archbishop Hickey was getting the secular media to understand what the Church says and thinks on things, and getting them to publish it.

“My job was about finding ways to explain this to journalists, as what many of them knew about the Catholic Faith was enough to make you laugh at times,” Mr Ryan said. They key, then, he said, was to explain the Faith to them in a rational way, as one can’t just say “it is because we say so”.

“Indeed, this is the case for the rest of the world in the way we communicate” the truth, he said.

“The Church is always based on rationality and human nature,” he said. Having said that, working for the Archbishop was “the best job I’ve had in my life, as you spend your time thinking about the Faith and the Church – the two most interesting things you can study.”

After spending three years as a teacher in Collie (where he met wife Joy) having been born in nearby Bridgetown, living in Balingup and attending a Sisters of Mercy boarding school in Donnybrook and five years at St Ildephonsus’ Boys’ School, New

Hugh Ryan, who said he was honoured by Perth’s Bishops celebrating the Mass with five priests for his retirement, addresses an intimate gathering of friends and workmates after the Mass.

Norcia, Mr Ryan started his journalism career in January 1962 at the Kyabram Free Press, Victoria, then at the Deniliquin Pastoral Times, NSW, before returning to Collie to work for The Collie Mail, where his only child, daughter Carmel, was born.

He wrote for the Suburban Section of The West Australian from 1970 and was sent to Port Hedland for two years before returning to general reporting in Perth, including covering Parliament, which he described as “the most educative time”.

He was then night chief of staff (COS) at The West, then assistant COS, writing editorials, before leaving to be press secretary for Liberal MP June Craig, Minister for Lands and Forest. He also worked for Liberal MP Paul Omodei, among others.

He also managed his own public relations firm from 1984-87.

From the completion of a cathedral begun in the mid-nineteenth century in WA to Pope Benedict’s remarkable gesture to traditional Anglicans, 2009 was a historic year.

The year 2009 started on a high note, with Perth Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton ordaining Peter Porteous to the priesthood on January 9 at St Denis’ Parish Joondanna in the Order of Friar Servants of Mary.

In the Year of St Paul from June 29, 2008 to June 28, 2009 declared by Pope Benedict XVI, Perth Catholics were given the opportunity for a plenary indulgence by participating in a religious function or public devotion in honour of the saint on January 25 and June 28 that year at several churches across the Archdiocese.

Across the globe, Carl Djerassi, 85, the Austrian chemist who helped invent the contraceptive pill, declared that his co-creation led to a “demographic catastrophe”, while Catholic doctors broadened the critique of the pill.

The Vatican’s Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith released the Instruction Dignitas personae on Certain Bioethics Questions, 21 years after its first foray into assisted reproductive technology, Donum vitae in 1987. Dignitas personae repeated the core teachings of Donum vitae, clarifying some problematic issues and tackling some new ethical questions openly and constructively. So said Rev Dr Joseph Parkinson, LJ Goody Bioethics Centre director, writing exclusively for The Record

The Neocatechumenal Way marked 40 years since its foundation, with Pope Benedict saying that its “lively presence in such great numbers bears witness to the wonders worked by the Lord over four decades”. At the Sixth World Meeting of Families in Mexico City it was revealed that the

‘family crisis’ is one rooted in misunderstandings about the very nature of men and women.

Pope Benedict lifted the excommunication of four Bishops ordained against papal orders in 1988 by the late French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, causing scandal among secular media who misunderstood the point of the Pope’s act, as British-born Bishop Richard Williamson, who has publicly said the Holocaust was exaggerated, was one of the four.

The Record ran a story pre-empting the Pope announcing a new model for disenchanted traditionalist Anglicans to be received into the Catholic Church. The Record was only wrong in the model the Pope chose, predicting a personal prelature when the Pope in October proposed an ordinariate, similar to a diocese, for them.

February started with a searching investigation of WA’s pro-life movement, while a new Abbott, homeless resource and other issues followed.

The Record started February with a searching investigative feature into the reasons for the pro-life movement’s mostly failed achievements in Western Australia, with Robert Hiini presenting a balanced and revealing portrait of the characters involved and the internal frictions that have occurred in the fight for the most vulnerable, the unborn.

The Vatican announced an examination of US women’s Religious orders, a process that is still ongoing, to discover why numbers have decreased so dramatically, and to observe the quality of life in the communities.

Pope Benedict XVI condemed denials of the Jewish Holocaust and renewed his “full unquestionable solidarity” with the world’s Jews during a visit to the former Auschwitz death camp.

New Norcia’s monastic Benedictine community elected a new Abbott, John Herbert, while back in Perth, Archbishop Barry Hickey launched a new resource to assist homeless in accessing help. Doubleview parish celebrated its 50th anniversary while, over in Queensland, the ousted Fr Peter Kennedy, who led a wayward St Mary’s Parish in South Brisbane started a new community outside communion with the Church, revealed in an ABC Radio interview he doesn’t believe in heaven, hell or the Incarnation.

The Archdiocese of Melbourne launched a large-scale rescue mission for people whose lives were devastated by a firestorm that wiped out large chunks of Victoria.

The Archdiocese of Perth began a much-needed makeover of the Cathedral Presbytery adjacent to the Cathedral

of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was also undergoing its own renovations.

The Record revealed the secret torment and new life found by Interview with the Vampire author Anne Rice, who admitted the death of her daughter led her down a dark path of atheism before finding her Catholic faith again.

Little Sisters of the Poor in Glendalough rejoiced at the news their Order’s foundress, Blessed Jeanne Jugan, was to be canonised on October 11 along with Damien of Molokai and eight others, including Trappist monk Rafael Arnaiz Baron, who is to be a patron of World Youth Day Madrid in 2011.

Perth Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton declared 150 adults to be members of the elect to be initiated into the sacred mysteries at the 2009 Easter Vigil on April 11.

AThe Record dares to defend the Pope from the world’s media on his Africa comments; while he also appointed two Perth priests as Monsignori.

ustralian theologian Tracey Rowland, Dean of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Studies and an expert on Joseph Ratzinger, now known as Pope Benedict XVI, visited Perth to address students, Bishops and clergy at Murdoch University’s Worship Centre on Christianity in the marketplace of faith traditions to launch the academic year for the university’s chaplains.

The Pope also appointed two Perth priests - Vicar General Brian O’Loughlin and new St Charles Seminary Rector Kevin Long - as Monsignors, to raise the profile of their respective posts, according to Archbishop Barry Hickey, who petitioned the Pope for the titles to be bestowed on the pair.

The US Bishops declare Reiki - which is practised in Perth parishes and Catholic communities - ‘inappropriate’ for

Catholic hospitals, where it is used in the US. The alternative medicine originating from Japan is unscientific, the US Bishops said would cause Catholics to “operate in the realm of superstition”.

Australian Sr Joseph Maria was elected to one of the most senior roles in Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Religious Order as one of four General Councillors of the Order to assist their new Superior General, Sr Mary Prema.

Bucking the trend of the nation’s media, The Record ran an explosive feature by Fr Michael Czerny SJ that said Pope Benedict’s comments in Africa that condoms don’t solve AIDS but make it worse are not the cause for concern that the world’s media made them out to be. The Jesuit pointed out that the Church’s teaching on sexuality, far from being

‘unrealistic and ineffective’, is, in fact, valuable, efficient and grounded in reality.

In a special broadsheet edition, The Record’s free Easter edition reported an alleged miracle through the intercession of the late Pope John Paul II, plus the unveiling of a version of Michelangelo’s Pieta outside the St Thomas More College chapel. Meanwhile, Notre Dame University in the US sparked outrage from Bishops and lay across the country by inviting pro-abortion President Barack Obama to not only give the Commencement Speech but awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

The Record also ran a special edition detailing the undertakings of priest-architect Mgr John Hawes throughout the Diocese of Geraldton.

June 2009

AWhile Angels & Demons caused a stir in June, WA Catholics were getting on with living out their faith in the world.

fter months of investigation, The Record finally published the breakdown of the 2006 Census that showed the reality of the pews in the May 13 edition, which revealed the gaping chasm between the number of people who identify themselves as Catholics and those who actually darken the doors of a church more than once or twice a year. The Record spoke to several Perth clergy about what the problems are and how to remedy them.

Pope Benedict XVI bestowed the Papal Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice on 11 Perth clergy who have served for 50 years or more, and also sent Archbishop Barry Hickey a blessing for the 25th anniversary of his episcopal ordination.

The Norbertines celebrated 50 years of sacrifice in WA

and Perth Redemptorists held revamped retreats on behalf of the Archdiocese of Perth to fire up youth post World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney.

A visiting Father of Mercy from the US who ran a parish mission at City Beach Parish gave a talk asking ‘whatever happened to the doctrine of Original Sin?’ He said that Original Sin is the most forgotten doctrine of the Catholic faith, prompting a local mother in the parish who heard it to say that his talk was a confronting but seldom-heard message from the pulpit.

The Record also ran a series by Hal Colebatch, 20 years since the fall of Communism in the former Soviet Republic, on the fall of what was once seemed a monolithic and genocidal threat to democratic societies everywhere.

Franciscans around the world gathered celebrated gath-

ered in Assisi for the 800th anniversary of the Ordersome gathering in Assisi - while The Record also spoke to the lesser-known Third Order of lay people who commit thesmelves to a Franciscan style of prayer and lifestyle.

Pope Benedict stepped into an interreligious minefield during a week long visit to the Holy Land, while Palestinian refugees begged him to take their story to the world. Prolife champion, WA Liberal MP Barbara Scott, retired from Parliament, and the Archdiocese of Perth made a final call for help in the St Mary’s Cathedral Appeal to complete its $32.9 million conservation and completion.

Historian Tony Evans tore apart modern architects’ attempts to build cathedrals and churches, saying they ‘betrayed us’ by depriving them of any sense of mystery and majesty.

Two Record journalists experienced the meaning of love in China while the Pope urged a rethink of the lay vocation.

June started off with a challenge from Pope Benedict XVI for laypeople to rediscover the lay vocation. He said they are called not just to help their priests run their parishes but to share more fully in the responsibility of building up the Church. This, he said, requires a change of mentality, especially for those who think being priest is to be in a position of power.

Catholic intellectual Jerzy Zubrzycki, regarded as the father of Australian multiculturalism, died this month, while the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Pontifical Gregorian University and the University of Notre Dame assembled some of the world’s leading scientists, philosophers and theologians for a week-long conference in Rome on biological evolution, critically appraising 150 years after Charles Darwin’s The Origin of the Species

It was apt that Archbishop Barry Hickey ordained four more priests just days before Pope Benedict XVI launched a special Year for Priests, while the prelate also issued his own pastoral letter to the faithful on the traditions, identity and mission of the priesthood.

The Pope also granted the Congregation for Clergy new powers to dismiss from the priesthood and release from the obligation of celibacy priests who are living with women, who have abandoned their ministry for more than five years of who have engaged in seriously scandalous behaviour.

Meanwhile, an abortionist’s murder in the US poses questions about the pro-life cause and, in Ireland, 800 priests, Brothers, nuns and lay people were implicated in a sex scandal in Ireland.

For the second time, two Record journalists - this time

Mark Reidy and Robert Hiini - travelled to China to investigate the remarkable work of Fr Luis Ruiz’s institutions caring for lepers, and discovered that HIV/AIDS orphans and families are the new lepers, and require just as much attention from the priest’s agencies. They found people of hope in both the victims and the workers.

Pope Benedict also appointed Bishop Christopher Prowse as the new Bishop of Sale, while Adelaide Auxiliary Bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ was installed as the new Bishop of Port Pirie. The next adaptation of Dan Brown’s historically questionable series, Angels & Demons, failed to cause the stir its director Ron Howard wanted it to, despite suggesting that the Church had restricted access. The Vatican, learning from the Da Vinci Code saga, didn’t let a peep out about the new movie, as scandal only causes popularity.

July 2009

At mid-year, the Church in Perth got news of a great event in December as Sydneysiders marked one year after World Youth Day

The beginning of the financial year saw the announcement of the opening of the Archdiocese of Perth’s largest capital investment - The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The December 8 opening was heralded on the front page of The Record on July 22, a foretaste of the torrent of Cathedral news that was to come.

In other bioethics related news, we spoke to the University of Notre Dame’s (UNDA) Gavin Frost, Dean of Medicine, and WA palliative care specialist Dr Derek Eng about the greater provision of palliative care in making euthanasia undesirable.

Locally, Perth seminarians Brendan Sia and Michael Cornell headed off to Rome having declared their candidacy

for priesthood at St Charles Seminary on July 7. Sydney celebrated the one year anniversary of World Youth Day with a week of evangelisation activities, kicking off with “Catholic Underground,” a performance from New York’s Hip Hop Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

As the new translation of the Roman Missal was being finalised, Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart told Record journalist, Anthony Barich that the current translation unintentionally leaves the treasures of the liturgy hidden, describing the new missal as “a great work of restoration.”

On the global front, Pope Benedict ordered that Fr Tomislav Vasic, former spiritual director to the Medjugorje ‘visionaries’ be dismissed from the priesthood and the Franciscan Order, threatening excommunication if his direc-

tive was ignored. The Pope released his first social encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Love in Truth). The encyclical is a call to a civilised market, responsible stewardship of the environment and included several controversial assertions such as the Pope’s call for a global governing body with substantive coercive powers.

The encyclical states that respect for the dignity of human life “is at the centre of true development,” while also calling for specific measures in economic development and ecology.

“Without the perspective of eternal life, human progress in this world is denied breathing-space,” the Pope wrote.

“Each person finds his good by adherence to God’s plan for him, in order to realise it fully: in this plan, he finds his truth, and through adherence to this truth he becomes free.”

August

TAugust was a month of commemorations and new beginnings as the Year for Priests kicked into gear and Australians waited for a new saint.

he Record kicked off its coverage of the Year for Priests with a story about three priests - Fr Walter Black MSC, Bishop Myles McKeon and Mgr Michael Keatingwho were there at the Second Vatican Council, over 40 years ago. For almost every week thereafter, we have provided a profile of a local priest.

In other local news, the Sedes Sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom) icon that John Paul II dedicated to the world’s university students made its way to Perth, touring the Catholic Chaplaincies of Notre Dame University and the state’s four public universities.

The resignation of Cathedral Dean, Mgr Thomas McDonald and the appointment of Bateman Parish Priest, Mgr Michael Keating was announced. Mgr McDonald

The 100th anniversary of Mary MacKillop’s death was celebrated at St Benedict’s Church, Applecross on August 7 with over 400 priests, religious and lay people turning out for the occasion as talk of the imminent canonisation of the saint intensified.

A day conference on the new missal translation saw lively debate about its merits as Perth priests gathered to hear from Fr Paul Turner, a US faciliator from the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, the body charged with producing the translation.

The Chivalry Ball, organised by local Catholic teens and held at St Kieran’s Parish in Osborne Park, saw several hun-

dred young people turn out for a night of formal dancing and fraternising.

Queens Park Norbertine Fr John Reynolds passed away on August 11 after a short illness.

Internationally, the Congregation for the Clergy announced that the Year for Priests would conclude with a meeting of priests in June 2010, with the Pope inviting all of the world’s priests to attend.

Taiwanese Catholic Bishops left a regional conference in haste to address deadly flooding back home after Typhoon Morakot caused a mudslide suspected to have burried 800 people. SA royal-esque Kennedy funeral outrages Catholics while an Australian Government report reveals truths the Church has been preaching for a millennia.

eptember greeted us with a landmark undertaking, with the Catholic Church’s finest bioethicists around Australia finally deciding to link up and pool their resources to fight legislation that is contrary to the teachings of Christ, following a landmark conference in Tasmania in August. St John of God Healthcare’s chief warns that aged care may disappear within 10 years due to expected Federal Government reactions to the global recession unless tough decisions are made.

The Record also became the first and only publication in Australia to run the complete rundown of the changes in the new Roman Missal from the new translations from the original Latin that will come into effect in 2011, plus an exclusive interview with the American priest who toured

Australia to brief our Bishops and clergy about what the changes mean and why they were made. A local briefing showed some resistance from local priests, but Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton was confident they would be implemented for the benefit of the faithful. The Society of Catholic Teachers Australia announced it would celebrate its 10th anniversary with an inaugural conference in October addressed by Sydney Auxiliary Bishop Julian Porteous and Perth Archbishop Barry Hickey, among others.

Deirdre Fleming wrote a groundbreaking feature exposing the growing range of products that claim astonishing results in aiding general health and incurable diseases, while US Cardinal Sean O’Malley outraged some with the pomp and ceremony allowed for the funeral Mass for Senator Edward

Kennedy, an avowed pro-abortion and same-sex marriage advocate. President Barack Obama, who has similar if not more aggressively liberal views, addressed the congregation at the Mass. Catholic Enquiry Centre founder Fr Tom White died at age 86, while St Charles Seminary was visited by Greek Orthodox seminarians.

Women’s participation in the Church continued to be debated at a national conference marking 10 years since the One in Christ Jesus Report, with many female figures who run Church organisations in Perth wondering what the big deal was about, as priesthood does not equate to power.

A Federal Government report on Australian Families that guides policy revealed that Australia’s fertility rate is jeopardising our own economic and social future.

After nearly 80 patient years of waiting, Perth’s St Mary’s Cathedral was reborn for new generations while honouring those past.

AFTER the institution and blessing of the new altar and vessels on December 5, the Cathedral opened with great pomp on December 8 with over 1000 guests witnessing the moment.

The event was attended by senior clerics from across Australia including many bishops from the Orthodox and Protestant churches.

Both Archbishop Hickey and architect Peter Quinn told The Record that they were overjoyed and had a great sense of pride in the completed building.

Perth local and Catholic Ralph Martins was feature in The Record as the recipient of the Western Australian of the Year Award for 2010. An acolyte and a family man, Mr Martins was given the award for his contribution to Alzheimer’s
