'GrandFeteattheCrystalPalaceTheLondonCatholicTotalAbstinence LeagueoftheCross,which,asour readersareaware,isunderthedirection ofHisGracetheArchbishop,heldtheir firstfeteattheCrystalPalaceon Mondaylast.Therewereupwardsof 12,000personspresent,themajorityof whomcomprisedthemembersandfriends oftheaboveLeague.Theprogramme ofthedaysproceedingswasofthemost attractivedescription,andnothingwas leftundonebythecourteousSecrerary andtheothermembersoftheC.T.A. Counciltomaketheoccasionahappy oneforallvisitors.Aconcertof children'svoices,underthedirectorship oftheRev.FathersPenningtonand Pycke,andaballadconcertbyamateurs, gavemuchsatisfaction.Themost impAuntfeaturesweretheTemperance Demonstrati.ms,twoofwhichtook placeduringtheday,andateachof whieliHisGracetheArchbishop presided.Therewasanumerous attendanceofclergy,bothfromthe diocesesofWestminsterandSouthwark. Nowhereisthepresssefreeasin Belgium,andnowheredoesitsliberty degenerateoftenerintolicense.A printer,itistrue,requirestbpatentto tocarryonhistrade,butsodoall tradesmen,andthepatentcostsonlya fewfrancsayear.Alibellermay,of course,beprosecutedinaCourtof Justice,anditanewspaperassailsan individual,thelattercanforcehis assailanttoinserthisreply.Buta patentcannotberefused.Anaction forlibeliscostly,andthereplyusually onlyhalf.deprivestheassaultofitsforce, andthustheuncheckedlibertyofthe pressquietlyglidesdownintothe oflicense.Andwhatlicense?Iwill notaskanyofyourreaders,arriving atthechiefrailwaystationsatBrussels, tospendapennyoutsidetheirgates onpaperstheresoldpublicly,forhe would,inreturn,receivenulessthan fiveofthemostscurrilous,obscene, blasphemousprintsthateverissuedfrom theprintingpress.TheirCommunistic andSociali-tdoctrinesaretheirmost innoceetpart.AndIcanvouchforthe factthatthesepapers,written,forthe mostpart,bymenoftheParisCommune arenotmerelysoldpubliclyunderthe eyesoftheBrusselspolice,butarethurst intothehandsofunsuspectingboysand girlsastheypassthroughtherailway stationstoandfromschool,toooften unaccompaniedbytheirparentsor guardians.

TheChurchReview,oflastSaturday, hassomestrikingremarksonMethodism, evokedbyBishopWordsworth'srecent controversywithaWesleyanminister regardingthatgentleman'srighttobe styled"Bevelend,'inaninscription onthetombstoneofhisdaughter,who wasburiedinthechurchyaidofthe parishwhereheresided.Ourcontemporarysays,Methodismclaims [whichbranchofit?]toheaChurch ofGod'sownmaking,'andtogive authoritytoministertheSacraments. Italsoutterlyrefusestoreturntothe housewhenceitcameout,onwhich,in thepersonofDr.Punshon,itsPresident, itsitsinloftyjudgment.Dr.I'tnislion criticizesuswiththefullconsciousness thatheisaninfallibleMethodistpope. Ileallowsthereissomegoodstill existingsidebysidewithsacerdotalism, andprotestsagainsttheideathathe takesevildelightinourerrorsand misfortunes.Itisveryevident,however,thatthereisonlyonethingforus -namely,togooverbagandbaggage, andsitatthefeetofDr.Punshon,and meeklypresenttheEnglishPrayer BooktotheReverendKeets,ofthe Conference,tobeexpurgatedand renewed.Onthewhole,itwillbeseen thatMethodism[again,weask,which beinchofit?]asrepresentedbythe recentCoeferetax,displaysaconsiderableamountofupstartarroganceofthe youngsterwhohasnotyetattainedhis majority.Itpossessesasublime contemptfortheprinciplesofitsown immediateprogenitor,andgenerously patsonthebackthevenerableancestor, ofwhichitissaidtobearevoltedchild."

AttheConferenceofWesleyans,the CleurchReviewgoesontosay,"A salientremarkwasmadebyoneofthe speakers,totheeffectthathewas utterlyunabletounderstandtheBishop ofLincoln.Thisspeakerevidently wishedtolookuponDr.Wordsworthas apious,goodman,butcouldnotconceive apious,goodman,believingin Apostolicalsuccession.TheBishop, saidthisauthority,wassufferingunder anecclesiasticalmonomaniawhichpre-

requestedthLassemblynottodisperse untilafterhebadtakenhisdeparture. Havingputoffthesacredvestments, heresumedhispeasant'sblouse,and, climbingoveragardenwall,reached,in thetwinklingofaneye,theadjoining forest,whereheremainedinhiding untilthenight,inorderthathemight moreeasilycrosstheFrenchfrontier.

CATHOLICENCOURAGEMENTOrEDINA. TIONINAMERICA.

StatisticsconcerningtheCatholic' SchoolsinMontreal,Canadaareinteresting.Montrealhasapopulation ofonly117,865souls,ofwhom85,180 areCatholics.Theschoolofthe BishopofMontrealeducates160boys; thes.howlsoftheChristianBrothers have3,797;theOblateFathershave 250;andintwenty-nineotheracademies,colleges,andschools,thereare 12,431pupils.Andyet,Isuppose, themmaybestillfoundpeoplewho imaginethattheCatholicChurchis opposedtoeducation! Inthecityof Rochester,NewYork,thereare5,53: pupilsintheCatholic,schools,while thoseinthecommonschoolsare5,697. TheCatholicsofthatcity,aselsewhere, paytaxesfortheshootstowhichthey donutsendtheirchildren,andthen cheerfullytaxthemselvestosustain theirownschools.

ThepilgrimagestoLourdescontinue. OnMondaynofewerthan4,000pilgrimsleftliodez,afteranimposing ceremonial.Atoneo'clockMgr. Bourret,sourroundedbyallhisclergy, solemnlyopenedthepilgrimageatthe Cathedral.Sovastwerethecrowds thatmorethan2,000personshadto remaininthePlacedesArmes,being unabletofindroominthechurch.The processiontotherailwaystationwas headedbymilitarybands,afterwhich cametherepresentativesoffivearrondissementsinthecity,andthenfour canonsoftheCathedral,intheirsurplices,carryingontheirshouldersthe largesilverstatueoftheCathedral. Nextwerefourcures,beatingbetween themthemagnificentgoldchalice,which thepilgrimswerebringingasanofferingtotheSanctuaryofCurLady,and thentheBishopandallthemembersof theCathedralChapter,fourdeputiesof Aveyron,andanumerousrepresentationofthemagistratesandmayorsof morethanthirtycommunes.Theeffect producedbytheprocession,asitwended itswaythroughthestreetswasmost impressive,and,thewholepopulation seemedtolinetheroutebywhichit passed.

THEPERSECUTIONSIN)WITZERLAND.

ThereceptionthePresidenthasmet withintherichdepartmentoftheNord hascausedlivelysatisfactioninMinisterialcircles,antiithashelpednotalittle toremovetheimpressionoffailurethat wasstampedonhisjourneythrough Brittany.Theremarkablediscourse addressedtoMarshalMacNlahonat LillebyCardivalReplier,Archbishop ofCambrai,isparticularlydweltupon bytheupholdersofConservatism;and eventhosewhoaromostaverseto religionanditsministersareforcedto renderdeservedhomagetothedignity, thepatriotism,andtheelevationof thoughtbywhichtheaddresswas distinguished.Inwelcomingthe PresidentathisentranceintotheChurch ofSt.Maurice,inthenameofhis clergy,theprelateextolledinafew simplebutevidentlysincerewordsthe Marshal'sfrankandconsistentadherence toCatholicfaith,andhisunswerving attentiontohisreligiousduties.The languageinwhichCardinalEegnier boretestimonytothezealofhispriests wasremarkable:-"Theycontinued," saidhisEminence,"inthesamepath inwhichtheMarshalhadformerlyhad experiencethattheywalked.Animated bythemostactivebutprudentseal, strangerstoallpoliticalagitation,their wholethoughtsweredevotedtothe

Allatonceaslightmovementwas heard.TheCuredressedinablouse, hadmadehisappearanceinthebarn, and,passingthroughthecrowd,was advancingtothealtar,where,assuming thesacredvestments,hecelebratedthe DivineSacrifice.Formorethanfive monthshispeoplehadbeendeprivedof theconsolationsofassistingatMass. Assoonasitwasover,theirlegitimatepastormadeashortaddresstohis flock,encouragingthemtoremainconstantinthefaith,andtoputalltheir confidenceinGod,whowouldnotfail todeliverthem.M.Froideveauthen

LordC.Astly,M.P.,inrespondingtothetoastof"The CountryImlembers"ataramshow dinneratOwersby,NorthLincolnshire, saidhewasveryproudofrepresenting thisfineoldcornerofNorthLincolnshire.Thelasttimeliewasamong themhewouldhavebettedanyone 1,000to5thathewouldneverbein theHouse.Hisgrandfatherhadspent athunderinglotofmoneyinthatgame, buthehadalwaysputdowninhis lookamemorandumtokeepoutofthat way.He(thespeaker)hadnot,however,spentashillingoverhiselection, andhemustsayhefeltasproudas oldLuciferofthehonorwhichthey hadconferreduponhim.Butthe HouseofCourteouswasnotaltogether aplacetobecovetedordesired,andhe doubtedwhetheranygentlemanwho wasusedtothecountrywouldcareto beshutuptherehourafterhour,day andnight.Therewere,besides,alot ofIrishchapsintheHousewhosometimesmakehimveryangry.Hethought therewereabout60ofthesefellowsin theHouse,andhebelievedabout40of themwerethemostconfoundedrascals heeversaw.Hedidnotfindfault withanybodybecausehemightbold opinionsdifferentfromhis,buthe entirelylosthispatiencewhenthese "coveys"cameintotheHouseand tookupthewholeofanafternoon,and carriedonfarintothenight,whensome pressingmotionwascoiningon,talking abouttheirlittlerottenIreland,whether thewhiskeywastobeIrishorScotch, orwhetherthepotatoesshouldbe kidneysorsomethingelse.Suchdiscussionsasthesewereoneofthethings whichdrovehimcleanoutoftheHouse, andtendedtomakeamanmorecareless thanheshouldbe.These40Irish rascalstowhomhehadreferredtook upmoretimethanalltherestofthe members,andusedmuchstronger language;but,fortunately,theywere dividedamongthemselves.Onenight adiscussionwasgotupaboutaprosecutionagainstanewspaperinIreland calledtheFlagofIreland.Theybegan totalkabouthowbadlyIrelandwas usedbecausetheeditoroftbatpapertheycouldeasilyimaginefromitsname

M.G111201.'6deathtookplaceatVal Richerathalf-pastseveno'clockon Saturdayevening,12thSeptember.He appearstohavepreservedhisconsciousnessuptothelastmoment,andtohave passedquitepainlesslyoutofexistence. BornatNimesonthe4thOctober, 1767,thedateofhisbirthcontainedall thiswhileinitstwoclosingnumerals thesecretofthetermofhislongevity. Foratthetimeofhisdemisehehimselfhadreachedthevenerableagoof eighty-seven.Hisdeceasecanhardly besaidtohaveoriginatedsomuchin thedecayofnatureasintherunning down,theslackening,and,atthelast, thecessationofhisframe'sintricate machinery.Surroundedbyhisfamily, atpeacewiththeworld.admiredby manyandrespectedbyall,asaman whosecareer,ifnotpoliticallyblameless, wasindisputablywellintentioned,and, asfarasanystatesman'scouldbe, thoroughlyconsistent,thesometime PrimeMinisterofFranceexpiredat thelastbywhatiscalledaveritable euthanasia.

THEACCIDENTONTHEGREATEASTERN RAILWAY.

Anappallingcollisionoccurredon theGreatEasternRailwayonthe10th ult.,atThorpe,abouttwomilesfrom Norwich-twentypersonsbeingkilled andaboutfortywounded.The8.40 p.m.mailtrainfromGreatYarmouth wasrunintobythedownexpresstrain frontNorwichtoGreatYarmouth. Theshockwasawful,accordingtoa telegraminthe"PallMall,"thetwo enginesrearingupintoanalmostperpendicularposition,andthewreckof

thecarriageswasdreadfultocontemplate,thetwotrainsbecomingmixed upinirremediableruin.Thedrivers ofbothtrains,withtheirfiremen,were killed,andfifteenotherpersons,mostof whomhadnotbeenidentifiedImptothis morning.ThenamesoftheenginemenkilledarePrior,Light,Clarke,and Sewell.Twoguardswerealsobadly injured,andseveralofthewoundedare notexpectedtorecover.Thecauseof theaccidentwouldseemtohavebeenthe departureoftheexpresstrainfrom Norwichwithoutproperauthority.

TheSecretaryoftheGreatEastern RailwayCompanygivesthefollowing astheofficialaccountofthecalamity:- "Aseriouscollisiontookplacelast nightonthisrailwayneartheproposed junctionwiththeEastNorfolkRailway, onthesinglelinebetweenNorwichand Brnndall,andthatuptothepmesent timenineteenpersonsaredead,including twoengine-driversandtwofiremen. Theexactnumberoftheinjuredisnot yetaccuratelyascertained,butthetrains werenotveryheavy.Thecauseofthe accidentwasthroughthenightinspector atNorwichgivingwronginstructions toBrnndalltosendanup-mailtrainto Norwich."

AccordingtoaSpecialCorrespondent oftheTimes,whodateshisdespatchon WednesdayfromHendaye,aCarlist telegramannouncesthattheCzarhas addressedalettertoDonCarlos,assuringhimofallhissympathy,regret- tingthattheSpanishnationshould havedepartedholtitsoldtraditions anddisregardedthelessonsofhistory, losingthustheplacebelongingtoit amongEuropeannations,owingtoits chronicrevolutions.TheCzarisstated inthistelegramtoconcludehisletter byexpressinghiswishforthecessation oftheevilsbywhichSpainisafficted.

RELIGIOUSANDLAYINSTRUCTIONIN FRANCE.

TheRadicalorgans,theSiecleattheir head,areatpresentupinarmsagainst someimaginaryprivilegeswhichthey imaginethepresentGovernment,has accordedtotheministersofreligious instructioninthiscountry.But,whatevertheirenergy,theywillfinditimpossibletomakeouttheircase.Every pennyofpublicmoneygivenbythe Stateforthefurtheranceofeducation goestolayestablishments;notason reachesCatholicreligiousschoolsfrom theTreasury.Theexaminationsofthe presentyearproveoncemore,andincontestably,theprosperousstateof religiouseducationinFrance,when comparedwiththatobtainableinlay 8:boo's.Thesuccessachievedbythe ChristianBrothersandtheteaching Ordersiseverywheremostremarkable. TheSieclelooksonthegrowingprosperityofsuchinstitutionsasan"invasion,"anddeclaresthat"itdependson thefriendsoflayinstructiontoresist vigorouslysuchanincursionbyuniting theireffortswithaviewtofoundnew schools."TheRadicalprintdoesnot attempttodissimilatethedifficultiesof thecontesttowhichitiscallingitssupporters,batitisquiteinelmswhenit givesasareasonfortermingthe strugglean"unequal"onetheassumed factthatGovernmentexhibitspartiality forthereligiousschool.Thedevotedness, zeal,andmoralsuperioritywhichthe lattercantoasttheypossessinadegree unattainablebytheirrivalswillalways givethemtheadvantage,butfavours fromtheStatetheydonotreceieve. TheSiecleshouldlooknearerhome,and itwillfindthatitisRadicalimpotency, andnotanyexceptionalprivileges accordedtotheclericalschoolsthatis thecausewhytheestablishmentsofthe formercomparesopoorlywiththelatter astoresults.

THEFREEMASONSINVIENNA.

TheFreemasonswhoseapplicationto erectanewlogdeinVienna,hasbeen refusedbytheGovernment,intendto appealtoahighercourt,andshow themselvesinclinedtomodifyand conformtheirstatutestotheUnionLaw, whichwillfacilitatetheconcession:but weconsideritmerelyatrick,ontheir part,inordertocontinuetheirsecret schemesagainsttheCatholicChurch inanotherway.

WritingontheConfessional,the RightRev.Dr.Gibbons,ofDeleware, concludesaneloquentdefencethereof asfollows:-"Ihaveseentimeman whoseconsciencewasweigheddownby timeaccnmulatedsinsoftwentywinters. TimeWorkwhichtimeOrderof ChristianBrothersareaccomplishingin educationalmattersintheUnitedStates andCanadaislittleshortofmiraculous. Alinosteverycityinthesetwo countrieshimvemadeapplicationtothe MotherHouseforaneAablishmentof thisOrder.TheSuperiorGeneral, tinding,theworkinAmericatoogreat furthesupervisionofoneProfincial, hasdividedtheUnitedStatedinto threeprovinces-thoseofthenorthand east,ofthewest,andofthesouth. Fromeveryquarterconiesthepraiseof theschoolsandcollegesunderthecare ofthisOrder;andtheBrothersare certainlydoingaworkthatwillgreatly redoundtothegloryofGodandtothe welfareofman.

PROPAGANDAPROPERTY.

TheEnglishandIrishCatholic Bishopshaveprotested,itisannounced throughaletterfro:nRomeinthe Union,againstthesaleandconversion ofthepropertyoftimePropaganda. TheirLordships'protests,besidesbeing forwardedtoRome,havealsobeen forwardeditissaid,toMr.Disraelifor presentationtotheQueen.

THEBRITISHASSOCIATIONATBELFAST.

Asyourreadersareofcoursealready aware,theBritishAssociationhasbeet' holding,andisstillholdingitsannual meetinginBelfast,whichcallsitselfthe AthensoftheNorth.Theiltaugural addresswasdeliveredonWednesday lastbyProfessorTylidaII,anddealtwith theAtomictheory.Dr.Tyndall avowedhimselfabelieverinDarwinism, buthedidnutofferanyreasonsofhis owninsupportofthedoctrine,his addressbeingchieflyahistmkatsetrospect.Hedidnotomitcalumniating theCatholicChurch,andhewaxed warmandevenfierceinhiscontinents onthecriticismwhichnow-a-days assailsthescientists.Notwithstanding thatonlyasmallminorityofhishearers agreedwithhisviews,hewaslistenedto ttithpatience,andwasloudlyappiatided attheclose.Hisreceptioncertainly wouldhavebeendifferentinDublinor Cork.Itwasratheranaudacious thing,sonicpeoplethins,t3deliversuch anaddressinalaudwheretel has suchaholdonthepeopleandIfancy iftheCatholicviewofDarwinismwere expoundedatameetingortheAssociation,therewouldimmediatelyberaised byProfessorTyndallandhisfriendsa cryof"Sectarianismnosectariaeisin!" AfewwordsspokenbyProfessorHuxley onMondayeveningconfirmsmeinthis opinion.OnSundayalltheProtestant andPresbyterianChurchesinBelfast rangwithdenunciationsofthe Darwinians.ProfessorHuxley,inturn, denouncedthepreachersasignorant andprejudiced,andalmostsaidthey hadnorighttospeakonthesubjectat allThetoleranceofthescientists! SomeoftheIrishjournalstakepride outofthefactthatDr.Tyndallisan Irishman;andthisremindsmethata g9odmanyofthosewho.havetakena prominentpartintheproceedingsof thismeetingoftheAssociationare Irishmen;e.g.,SirWilliamWilde,who presidedovertheAnthropologicaldes partment;LordO'llagan,whoprebipedoverthedepartmentofEconomics andStatistics;ProfessorJellett,who presidedovertimeMathematicaldepartment;ProfessorStokes,andothers. Inthedepartmentpresidedoverby LordO'Haganhavebeenthediscussionsoftimemostgeneralinterest.Lord O'Haganhimselfdeliveredanaddress inwhichhetouchedontheIrishLand Question.

MR.DISRAELI, CardinalCullen'schiefsupporterintheDublinpress,theEveningPost,says inregardtothorumourofthePrime Minister'sintention ofvisiting Belfast:-"Nomatterwhatourpolitical differenceswithMr.Disraeli,wechallbe gladtolearnthatwhereverhegoesin Irelandhewillbereceivedbyapeople whohonourgenius,withtherespectdue tohisundoubtedtalentsasanorator andmanofletters."

RELIGIOUSCEREMONYATPOTSDAM.

Itiscurious-half-affecting,halfrevolting-toroadtheaccountscoming tousfromPotsdamoftheconfirmation oftheeldestsonoftheImperialPrince ofGermany.Itishalf-affectingand half-revolting,wemean,inthissense. thatitisimpossiblenottomarvel overtheapparentlyprofoundreligious emotionofaFamily,theagedheadof whichistoleratingatthesamemoment themostcruel,brutal,andrelentlessof religiouspersecution.Pietysoill-timed ontheoldEmperor'spartrecallsto mindirresistiblythoseterriblysatirical caricaturesoftheKingofPrussia(as hewasthen)onhiskneessaying, "PraiseGodfromwhomallblessings flow,"andthen,inthesamebreath,as anexultantasidetoQueenAugusta(by telegram),announcingsomanymoresay, "lenthousandFrenchmensentbelow!" Thathorribleminglingofslaughterand prayers,ofwholesalecarnagebyKrupp guns,andofPraise-God-bare-bones ejaculationsflashedacrossEurope throughthetelegraphicwire,tobe afterwardssenttheroundofthenewspapers,wasnotoneatommoreincongruousinitself,asitseemstous,than thislastexhibitiononthepartofthe oldKaiserWilhelm.Herearoten millionsofCatholicsunderhisrule groundtothedustwiththemost callousindifference,bymeansofa whollyunprovokedandaquiteheartless religiouspersecution.Andinthemidst ofithereistheagedchief,theState assistingwithasortofexaggerated unctionatthisconfirmationdillsyouthfulgrandson.Theceremonytook placeonTuesdayintheBasilicaofthe FreidenskircheatPotsdaminthe presenceofthewholeImperialCourt consistingofanaugustassemblageof Princes,Peers,Ministers,Generals,and OfficersofState.TheEmperorwas thereinhisuniformasawarrior.The ImperialPrincess,whomheledintothe church,wasinblack.TheEmpress. dressedincream walkedbetween tl.eImperialPrince,intheuniferrnof the1stRegimentoftheGuards,and thePrinceofWales,wearingoverhis scarletuniformasaBritishGeneral thestarandrii,bonoftheBlackEagle, '1hestriplinggrandsonoftheEmperor, theyoungPrinceFrederickWilliam AlbertVictor,nowaboyofsixteen, appearedalsointheguiseofasoldier, weuriugtheuniformofthe1stFoot Guards.Asapreliminarytothe ceremonyofconfirmation,wearetold thatDr.Heim,theCourtPreacher, addressedasolemnexhortationtothe Princerespectingthedutiesofonefor whomsuchhighdutieswerereserved. Anthemsandchoralesclosedthe ceremonial,whichissaidtohavedeeply aidvisiblyaffectedthemembersofthe imperialFatally."Severalofthem," weread,"shedtearsincludingthe brothersofthePrince,whilethe emotionofhislittlesistersseemeduncontrolable.Wheel,however,allwas over,theEmperoraroseandwarmly embracedhisgrandson,andthe EmpressandtheImperialPrinceand PrincessdidthesameTheEmperor thenrepeatedlyandwithdeepemotion embracedhisson."Allthis,ofcourse, isveryaffecting.Butitisalso,we mustinsistuponit,underthecircumstances,toourthinking,exceedingly revolting.Sofullofemotion,oftears andembraces,overthehappyceremonial oftheLoy-prince'sconfirmation! TheHoteldelaRegni(lreinthe ChampsElyse.es,recentlysold,aas builtbythearchitectBarreforLa Regniere,thefinancierwholavished thousandsonitdecoration.Thefamily wereMessedorafflictedsaystheGlob,, withareputationthroughoutParisas theleadinggourmandsoftheage.The fatherofthecapitalistdiedaccording tothereceivedreport,withthenapkin athischin,andwithapatedefoiegrits beforehintonthetable.Grimm'dela Regnieretheson,continuedand improvedthereputationofhisfather, andthegrandson,bearingthesame name,addedtoitbydevotingalifetime totheelaborationofentertainmentsas extraodinaryastheyweresumptuous. Someofthecapricesofthehostwere bynomeansagreeabletotheguets. Suchwastheprohibitionofallwines duringtherepastandtheobligation imposeduponeachdinerofdrawinghis owncupofteaorcoffeefromsome bronzefiguresofsatyrschargedwith theseliquids.Anotherwasthe undertakingexactedfromeachofthe invitedtothe"philosophicbreakfast" toconsumeatleast17cupsofoneof thosedrinks.Inspiteofthese tyrannousrestrictionsandcompulsory rulesthecompetitionforadmissionto thebanquetwasimmense.Notonly weretheplacesofthegueststhemselves occupied,butalargegallerysurroutrlingthediningsaloonwascrammedwith spectatorstuwhomticketsofadmission hadbeensent.Besidesthehostof absurditiesintroducedbytheyounger LaRegnierewasaninnovationtowhich thepresentgenerationwillallowsonic shareofcommendation-thatofdispensingwiththeservicesofdomestics, whoseplacesweresuppliedbymechanicalcontrivancesnowmorecommonly knownandapplied.

THEDEANOFMANCHESTER'SCOMMENT ONPROFESSORTYNDALL.

TheDeansaid:-"TheProfessor endedamostremarkableandeloquent speechbyterminghimselfamaterial atheist,andthat,Iamsorrytosay, withoutanyprotestonth-epartofthe audience.Wemustprotectasfaras wecaneveryonewhoisnearus-who isdependentuponus-fromsuchafatal result,andwemustteachthem.thetrue doctrineofChristJesusourLord,and instructthemintheprinciplesofour goodoldmotherChurch-aChurch foundedupontheWordofGod.You haveagreatmanyreligiousbodieswho pretendtoteachtheWordofGod,but theyhavenotthesafeguardswehavein theBookofCommonPrayer,which teachesushowtousetheWordof'God andnothowtohandleitdeceitfully.

Mr.SydneyTomer,theGovernment Inspector,givesinalettertothoTimes alamentablestatementoftheincreaseof crimeinEnglandandScotland.In 1861thepopulationofGreatBritain wasabout20millions;thenumberof adultcomtuitmestswas103,343.In 1871thepopulationwasabout22i millionsandatthesamerateofincrease theadultcommitmentswouldhave beet)116,970;buttheyamountedto 140,127;andin1873to146,054.That is,whilethepopulationincreasedby13 percent.theadultcommitments increasedbymorethan33percent.; thelasttwoyearsbeingtheworst.In Scotlanditisstillworse,forwhilethe populationadvancedby10perrent.the commitmentsadvancedbyGO.Mr. Turnerpartlyaccountsforthisincrease bygreaterstrictnessontheportofthe policeandrepeatedcommitmentsofihe thesameoffisnders.Eatthesethings willstillleavealargemargin,and, whateverbethecause,thesestatistics showthatpromptactiononthepart oftheGovernmentandLegislatureis necessarytocopewiththeevil.

Ten.peranceisavirtue;andTemperancewillalwaysfindinus,warm advocates.But,whilewelove Temperance,wemustsaywelove Chastitymore:andkisbecauseGOOD TEMPLARS,byencouragingthegatheringandindiscriminatemixingofthe sexes,astheydo,intheirsocalled LODGES,incurdeservedodium,and affordthebestandamplestreason,why theyshouldbecondemnedandscouted ineveryChristiancommunity. InAustria,anominallyCatholic Ministrytriestoimitateatnowide distancetheoppressivepolicyof BISMARCKandofFALCK.InFrance, thevoiceofherpastorsishushed, owingtothehaughtyintoleranceofthe PrussianDictator.InSwitzerland, asinArmenia,herpriestsandtheir congregationsareexpelledherChurches, andschismaticalintrudersministerupon heraltarstocongregationsthat acknowledgenotherauthority.In Italy,andinSpain,herSeesarevacant, hercoffersareplundered,hercloisters desecrated,herChurchesprofaned. Inthissadspectacle,however,which theCATHOLICCHURCHatpresentoffers, thereisnothingtocausedespondency,if webutturnuponitalittleofthatlight whichFaithaffords.Deepasher afflictionmaybe,heavilythoughthe handofthespoilerbelaiduponher,we findinherverymiseryreadbythis sacredlight,motivesofconsolation.In pointoffactdowenotseeinthe persecutionstowhichshehastosubmit, theattainmentofoneofthemost pointedlyforetoldcharacteristicsofthe truebrideofCHRIST?Andhavewe notinthisattainmentoneofthe strongestproofsofthedivinenessofthe Church'sorigin?Wrongedandinsulted,isshenottherealizationofthe typicalspouseoftheCanticleof Canticles,'who,inthetemporary absenceofherbeloved,exposesherself totheroughtreatmentandrudeinsults ofthewatchmenofthecity,forHis sake,Inhersufferingandinhertears isshenotthesecondJerusalemof whichthefirstwasatypewhen,her gatesbrokendown,hertowersinthe handsofherenemies,hersanctuary defiledbythepresenceoftheGentile, herpriestspiningwithoutbread,her virginsinaffliction,heryoungmen slainwiththesword,shestoodsolitary asawidowwithoutchildren,whilsther sonsanddaughtersfarawayin exileweptforherfadedsplendoursby thewatersofunholyBabylon.

Persecutionhasbeenpromisedherasher birthrightbyHimwhosewordisnever knowntofail.Ithasbeensetdownas oneofthosethings,which,inalienably hers,aretomarkheroutastheworkof Gonuntiltimeshallbenomore.Itis anApostle'steachingthatconformity withtheCHRISTofearth,isthenecessaryantecedentofpartnershipwiththe CHRISTofglory.Herprerogativeitis toaffordinherexistenceareflexofher founder'slifeonearth.Asthatlife wasoneofsuffering,lilcewise,suchis hercareertobe.Theservantisnot abovehismaster,northespouseabove herlord.IftheworldhatedHIM, itmustalsohateheriftheworld metedoutpersecutiontoHim,toherit mustmeteoutpersecutiontoo.There isonehypothesis,indeed,inwhichlove mighttaketheplaceofhate,and blessingsbeshowereduponherinstead ofblows.ItisHE,whopromisedher suffering,speaks.Ifshehadbeenof theworld'sways,andaccordingtothe world'sheart,theworldwouldofcourse

loveherasitsown.Wereshewillingto forgethermission,didsheconsentto descendfromthechairinwhichshehas beeninstalledtoteachmankind,tobe silentwhenwickednesswithbrazen frontorinsidiousstepsdrawsnighher fold,tohavenowordofwarningforher childrenwhenthemosthurtfulerrors arepresentedthemastruth,then,indeed, thewisdomandthepoweroftheworld wouldnotarraytheircombinedforces againsther.Shewouldremainunharmedanduntouched;herlifewould bealifeofpeace.Butnosuch hypothesiscanshebyanyactofhers fulfil.Shecannotprovefalsetoher vocation.Shemustrealiseherdestiny. Sheis"instantinseasonandout.of season."Shereproves,entreats,and rebukes,andtheworld'soverturesof loveareatanendtheChurch'sgains arehateandpersecution.

Yes!hateandpersecutionandhate andpersecutionitwillbeuntotheend.In herantagonismtotheworldtherewillbe nochange: intheworld'swarfare againsthertherewillbenoabatement. Whenthelionliesdownwiththelamb, whenthefaithfulshepherdmakesterms offriendshipwiththeprowlingwolf, then,andnotbefore,willreligious persezutioncease.Butmeanwhileour hopesaretobehigh,ourfaithunshaken. FrontTIBERIUSinthefirstcentury,to BISMARCKinthenineteenth,thelistof persecutorsisalongone,andcontains mightynames.But,nevertheless,we readnotthatruineverovertookthe Church.Woundedshehasoftenbeen neverdying,stilllessdead.Crushed foratimebeneaththeheelofimpious assailants,shebasspeedilyarisentrout herprostratepositionmorevigorous thanbefore,whilethetyrantofthe hourhassunkignominiouslytothedust. BetweenlitsmatteKandANTICHRISTa longintervalmayoccur,andmany persecutorsmayappear.Theymay assailtheChurchwithmilderterrorsState-trials,prisons,andtines,orsword inhand,theymaybidstreamstorunof christianbloodbuttheresulttrill alwaysbethesame.Dependentlyupon noconditionhasitbeensaid,"The gatesofhellshalltutprevailagainst it."Independentlyofallchangeof circumstariceswilltheCHURCHOF CuttisTlastuntotheend.

tosietanceandsupportinaprogressivepolicy,inthe imiugurationoflocalself-government,inthepromotionofnewindustries,intheestablishmentoftelegraphiccommunication,andinvariousotherimportantmatters.Now,throughtheblessingof Providence,Iamabletocongratulateyouupon havingpassedfromthatdepressedstatetooneof prosperityunprecedentedInthiscolonyandthatin despiteofbadseasonsandgreatreductionof ImperialExpenditure.Iam,moreover,abletocongratulatethecolonyuponthefactthatthisprosperity issound,thatItismainlybaseduponthedevelop. mentofindustriesandtheresourcesofthecolony,and thattheincreaseofrevenueaccrueschieflyfromthe increaseofexports.Iwillnotstoptorecapitulate measuresadopted,orworkscarriedoutorcommenced,butIwillInafewroundfiguresfurnishyou withonetestbywhichtheWesternAustraliaoffive yearsagomaybecomparedwiththeWesternAustraliaofto-day.Takingtheyearendingonthe30th September,1869(thedayofmyenteringintooffice), andtheyearendingonthe30thSeptember,1874,I findthatthentherevenuewasunder£109,000,the expenditureover£107,000,asagainst,forlastyear, arevenueofexceeding£161,000,andanexpenditure ofabout£131,000.TheIncomeofrevenue,therefore was£52,000,ofwhichonlyabout£12,000.isderived fromnetincreaseoftaxation,-whilsttheexcessof revenueoverexpenditure,whichin1869wassomethingover£1,000,wasinthelastyear£24,000.Cash intheTreasuryatPerthwastinder£20,000onmy arrivalonthe30thSeptember,1874,itwasin excessof£36,000, ThesefiguresareindependentoftheLoanAccount. WhenthewholeLoanIsraised,yourtotalindebtednesswillstillbelessthanoneyear'sincome. Iwillonlyfurtheradd,thatduringtheperiodreferredto,yourimportshaveincreasedfrom£233,000 tooverL367,00,-showingtheincreasedmeansand consumingpowerofthecolonyandyourexports, calculatedatverymoderatevalues,from£176,000 to£400,000,-markingtheincreasedproducingpower oftheColony.

WEregrettoreportthatduringthe pastmonthPerth,anditsneighborhood, hasbeenvisitedbyanepidemic,which ispopularlyknownastheInfluenza, andtheresult,intoomanycases,has beenfataltothosewhohavebeenattackedbyit.Wedonotpretendtobe pathologists,buttherecanbenoquestionthatthesanitaryconditionofthe Cityanditssuburbsshouldreceive promptattention.Theuseofthe WaterCart,asasanitaryinstrument, iswellillustratedintheextractwhich weappendhereto,from"LightScience forLeisureHours,"andis,atthepresent sicklyperiod,bothinterestingand suggestive:-

Amicroscopist,Mr.Dancer,F.R.A.S.,has betnexaminingthedustofourcities.The resultsarenotpleasing.Wehadalways recognisedcitydustasanuisance,andhad supposedthatitderivedthepeculiargrittinessandflintinessofitsstructurefrom theconstantmacadamizingofcityroads. Afterthis,onebeginstorecognisethe manlierinwhichsomediseasespropagate themselves.Whathadbeenmysteriousin thehistoryofplaguesandpestilencesseems toreceiveatleastapartialsolution.Take cholera,forexample.Ithasbeenshown.by theclearestandmostpositiveevidencethat thisdiseaseisnotpropagatedinanyway, saveone-thatis,bytheactualswallowingofthecholerapoison.InProfessor Thudichum'smasterlypaperonthesubject intheMonthlyMicroscopicalJournal,'it isstatedthatdoctorshaveinhaledafull breathingfromapersoninthelaststageof thisterriblemaladywithoutanyevileffects. Yettheminutestatomofthecholerapoison receivedintothestomachwillcausean attackofcholera.Asmallquantityofthis matterdryingonthefloorofthepatient's room,andafterwardscausedtofloatabout intheformofdust,wouldsufficeto prostrateahousefulofpeople.Wecan understand,then,howmattermightbeflung intothestreets,and,afterdrying,itsdustbe waftedthroughawholedistrict,ceasingthe deathofhundreds.Oneof-thelessonstobe learnedfromtheseinterestingresearchesof

THEREGATTA.-TheAnnualRegatta whichtookplaceinMelvilleWater,Perth, onthe9thNovemberwasonlyapartial success.Thewantofgamesandathletic sportsdisappointedalargenumberof pleasureseekers.Itis,however,dueto Messrs.DyerandSholl,tostatethatthose gentlemendonetheirutmosttorenderthe day'sprogrammeinterestingandattractive.

Sasoaewoon.-RecentadvicesfromChina givemostgloomyaccountsofthecondition oftheSandalwoodmarket,and,asaconsequence,theStorekeepershavebeencompelledtodroptheprice.TheSandalwood trade,nodoubt,hasbeenmostbeneficialto thecolonybuttherecanbenoquestion thatthehighpricehithertopaidforitby thetraders,hasinducedmanytoabandon theirieg:timateoccupation-Farming-very muchtotheirownultimatedisadvantage. Didninnypeisonswhonowdevotesomuch timetocartingSandalwood,paymore attentiontotheirfarms,andendeavorto improveupontheirpresentsystemof husbandry,notonlywouldtheybecome muchricherindividually,butthecolony itselfwouldtherebybelargelybenefited.

OCRAGRICULTURALSOCIETIES.-During thepastmonth,ourAgriculturalSociteies havehadtheirAnnualgatherings.The reportsofthevariousSocieties,whichhave beenpublishedinthelocaljournals,show thatalivelyinterestistakeninagricultural matters,andthattheAgriculturalSocieties areexercisingamostbeneficialinfluencein everyDistrictinwhichtheyareestablished.

SERTCULTURE.-ThereisabundantevidencethatourGovernmentaredoingtheir utmosttoencouragecolonialindustry,and, asafurtherproofOftheireffortstothat end,havealteredtheconditiononwhichthe Bonusfortheexpertofcocoonbearing silkmaybeobtained.Insteadofhaving toexportcocoonsbearingsilk,anyperson who,beforethe1stofMarch,1876,exports 250ouncesofsaleablegrain,willnowbeentitledtothebonusofZoo.Wesincerely trustthattheofferoftheGovernmentwill inducethepublictoprosecuteanindustry whichcaanutfailtopayhandsomely.

THEGOVERNOR'SSPEECH.-Thespeech whichHisExcellencyGOVERNORWELD, deliveredontheoccasionofopeningthe LegislativeCouncilonthe18thult.,mayhe lookeduponasHisExcellency'slastpublic actinWesternAustralia.Thespeechitself isamostinterestingone,andshows,beyond mil,howconsiderablythecolonyhasprogressedsincehisIllsExcellency'sarrivalin 1869.Factsandfiguresarestubbornthings andtoestablishanassertionareworthany amountoftall-talkorhighsoundingdeclamation.Fromthespeechwelearnin1869 theRevenuewasunder£109,000,andthe expenditureover£107,000.In1873,the revenueamountedtonolessthan£161,000, andtheexpendituretoabout£131,000.Thu revenue,therefore,duringtheperiodunder review,hasincreased£52.000;and,ofthe Increase,itmustbeborneinmind,only £12,000isduetoanincreaseoftaxation. Heshouldfollowthegoodexamplesetby oneparty,atallevents,anddealwiththe meritsofthecase.Althoughtheywerenot allowedtodealwithpersonalitieswithregardtopersons,itwouldbequiteafair thingtocallsystemsbythosenameswhich reallybelongtothem.Hewasfirstofall goingtospeakabouttheoriginofthisattempttosecularizeeducation,andthenwhat seemedtobetheupshotofit.Inorderto understandthisquestiontheymustgotrack some3U0ears.Therewerethreesystems ofcivilization-hemeantthePagancivilizationofaucitntRome,Greece,sueEgypt, therewasthecivilizationoftheJewish peopleundertheOldLaw,whichhadinit muchthatwasbeautifulandmuchthatwas true;andtherewasthecivilizationcf Christitodly,whichwasastillmoreperfect civilization,comingfromGod,through JesusChristourLord.Nowhemaintained thatithadbeenprovednotonlybySt.Paul, totheRomans,butbyallhistorians,thatthe Pagancivilization,thoughitverymuchrefined,polished,anddevelopedtheintellect, tendedto,anddidinreality,depravethe heart.Thentheycametothatchosen peoplewhosecivilizationwasnotfeundedin materialthings,butupontheirbeliefinone God,alltheirteachingsandlaws,andtheir formationofcharacterandheart,beingimpregnatedwiththebeautifulteachingsofthe DivinereligionundertheOldLaw.Then theycametotheChristiancivilization,ithigh wasbroughtinbyChristandhisApostles, andthisinthecourseofshorttime,asthey knew,permeatedthewholeoftheEuropean thought,anddirectedlegislationandsocial lifeandmoralforce,andallthosethingsthat elevatedandinstructedman.Iftheytraced allthatwasgoodandpure,allthatwasnoble andrefined,tillthatwasorderlyandselfsacrificinginthehistoryoftheEuropean statesunderChristianity,theycouldonlygo backtothetimeoftheirSaviour.Letthem kneelbeforeHint,thankhimforllismercifulgoodness,andtellHimthattheywould maintainHisfaitheventothesheddingof theirblood.(Cheers.)Atonetimethere wasonefaith,astheyknewthemselves,and, however,differentweretheformsofgovernment,therewasverylittledifficultyin teachingthatfaithintheChristianschools oftheworld.Butwhenacertainportionof theworldapostatized,300yearsago,from theunityofthefaith,immediatelytheyhail amultiplicityofbeliefs,untilnownoman couldcountthenumberofsectsthatlived andcreptinthemidstofmen.TheconsequenceofthiswasthattheGovernment saidthatitcouldnotteachreligioninthe schoolswheretherewassomanyreligionstheonlythingwecandoistokeepitoutof theschoolsaltogether,andinstructthe childreninthosethingswehavetodowith inthisworld-suchasreading,writing,and arithmetic.Theywouldfindthatthosewho hadnobeliefinreligionatallhadbeenvery gladtomakeuseofallthisargumenttokeep religionoutofschoolsaltogether.Ifthey wenttoRussia,theywouldfindthatthe Government,inorderthattheymightconvertorpervertthepoordown-trodden Polishpeople,introducedtheirRationalism intotheschools.Therewasalsoapartyin thestatesofGermany,whowereonlytoo

glad,asfarastheywereable,tointroducea schoolsystemwhichupsetbeliefinreligion altogether.AndiftheywenttoBelgium theywouldfindthesolitaires,ormenprofessingtobelieveinnoreligion,whohad endeavouredtoexpungeeveryvestigeof Christianityoutoftheschools;andthe samethinghadoccurredinAustria,where men,tramplingontheConcordat,triedto removetheprinciplesofChristoutofthe mindsofthepeople.Comingbacktoour owncountry,itwasverynaturalthatthey shouldlookatthecauseofthismovement. Itwassaidbythoseengagedinit"Wedo lovereligion,onrreligionistherightone." Buttheydidnotseektoestablishit.They didnotsay,Letusexpungetheother creeds,andletushaveourownreligion taught.Theysaid,Letusdoawaywith religion,letushavesecularinstruction,let usfitmenforthisworld,letusdowhatwe cantomakethemgoodcit butasfor heavenandhell,GodandChrist-letus leavethattothepriest.ThegreatInternationalSocietyhadendeavouredtobring theseprinciplestobearuponthepopulations oftheworld,Thecardinalpointsofthe internationalorsocialisticpartyinSwitzerlandwascontainedinthesewords,awltheir echowasfoundhere-compulsoryandgratuitouseducationuptothecompletionofthe fourteenthyearofthechild'sage,separation oftheChurchfronttheState,andalsoofthe schoolsfromtheChurch.Aneducation leaguehadbeenintroducedinto'Franceby thesolitaires.Theprincipalobjectofthese menwasanassociationtopreventmenand women,eitherinlifeoratdeath,fromreceivingthesacramentsofreligion.The thirdarticleoftheirslattiewas,thatneither politicsnorreligionshallhaveanypartin education.Theysoughttobailupanew society,basedsolelyuponlearningawlinstruction.Oneoftheprizesgivenbya societybelongingtothisassociationofmen forthespreadofeducationwasaprizefur goodconductawardedtoadaughterofa free-thinker,whohadneverattendedany placeofworship,(Laughter.)Comingto America,somuchtalkedabout,itwasthe stuntsasinotherpartsoftheworld.The commencementofthesystemofsecular education'herecouldhetracedtoawoman, FannyWright,whothumsliedaboutthe%ear 1825.ShemarriedaFrenchman,andshe andheendeavouredtointroduceinto Americaasocietysomething,liketheItalian Carbonari-asocietyformedinorderthat theymightunderminereligion-inorder thattheymightdoawaywiththeindissolubilityofthemarriagetie-illorderthatthey mightdoawaywiththebeliefinGodand theimmortalityofthesmil-inorderthat mg'r's:111(1woolen'searthlyhappille,icoedit 1)0promotedwithoutletan,lkin thattheymightbe:tolesofartoforgttthe otherorldastothrowthemselvesaway1,11 this.Thethreegreatenemiestotheir system,theyconsidered,were-religionfirst, marriagesecond,anprivatepropertythird andinplaceofthemtheyweregoingto substituteforreligion,scienceforprivate property,acommunityofgoodsandfor marria;le,communityofwives.(Laughter.)

Thislady,withherhusboml,introduceda secretsocietyintotheUnitedStolesof America,whichatlastgotagreatholdupon agoodmanymen,andtheyworkedthis principleofseculareducationinorderto introducethedissolubilityofmarriage,the abolitionofprivateproperty,andtheupsettingt,iallrehgiomandtheconsequenceofthis isthatwereadthereare25,0ne,utatofpeople inAmericawhodidnotprofessanydistinct religionwhatever;andthesecularpublic systemhassodegradedanddebasedthe population,thatmenofthought,andmenof purity,menwhodesirethegoodofthe people,donotknouyonwhlehsidetoturnto remedythealmostuniversalsystemofcorruption.(Applause.)TheBostonPilotof April6,1672,says:-"Thatthedevilisin thepublicschools,ragingandrampantthere amongthepupils,aswellasamongthe teachers,noonecanwelldoubtwhohassent achildintothemasguiltlessofeviloruncleanthoughts,aspureasanewly-fallen snowflake,andhadhimcomehomeinashort timecontaminated,almostbeyondbelief,by thevilenessandfilthwhichhehasseenand heardandlearntthere."Adistinguished Frenchman,ProfessorAgassiz,says:-"A largeproportionoftheprostitutesofBoston tracetheirfalltotheinfluencesthatthey metWithinthepublicschools."(Cheers.) Ilewasashamed,asaCatholic[bishop,to bringbeforethemthewordsthataremade useofinthatbookwithregardtothenmst frightfulvicesthatseemtogrowwitha growthirresistablewheretheteisnoreligion toplaceitsfootuponthatvilemonster-the passionofman.(Cheers.)GovernorBrown, addressingnotlongagotheNational Teachers'Conventionintit.Louis,said:"Itisaverycustomarydeclarationtoprononncethateducationisthegreatsafeguard ofrepublicsagainstthedecayutvirtueand thereignofimmorality,yetthefactscan scarcelyhearouttheproposition.The highestcivilizations,'bothancientand modern,havesometimesbeenthemost flagitious.Now-a-days,certainly.yourprime rascalshavebeeneducatedrascals." (Laughterandcheers,)Inorderthattheir goodfriendsmightnotimaginethathewas againstenlightment-forliewishedtoopen thedooraswideaspossible-(cheers)-in orderthathemightnotbemisunderstoodhewasgoingtobringforwardanargument toshowthathewasnotagainstinstruction, whenitwasdirectedbyreligion.Butlie wouldnomorethinkofimpartingmere secularinstructionwithoutreligionthanhe wouldplaceaminierifleinthehandsofa boywhodidnotknowhotstouseit,and trustIninselfinhispresence.(Applause.)

Itwasnotpossibleforameresecularinstruction;inwhat'wascalledthethreeR's, tofitpersonstofightthegreatbattlewith thepassionsofman;butitwaspossible withthecombinationofInstructionwith religiontofitthemforthatbattle,andto provethisliewouldbringforwardafew figures-onlyafew,forhewouldnotgointostatistics,whichnobodyeverread.In Francethemenandwomenbothwereeducated-themeninthepublicschools,and withoutreligion,wherethepriestshavenot beenallowedtobringintheirinfluenceand thewomenareeducatedprincipallyunder theinfluenceofreligiouspersons,and religionisbroughtintotheirschools.if theycomparedtherecordofcrimecommitted bymenandwomentheywouldfindvery curiousresult'.Themenwerefarmore criminalthanthewomen,andwhatwasmost sttikingandcuriouswasthattheywere meredepravedinproportionastheywere morehighlreducatedwithoutreligion, whilethewomen,themorehighlythey Wereeducatedwithreligion,becamethe morepureandholy.(Applause.)These 1(qm-itsweremadeupforeighteenyears, fonttheyear1829to1846,andcriminals iseredividedintothreeclasses-persons Itdoherecalledignorant-thatis,who couldWneitherreadnorwritetheinstructedformedthesecondclass-thatis, thosewhocouldreadandwritemoreorless wellandthethirdclass,thebetterinstructed,whohadreceivedahighereducation thantheprimaryeducation.Thisrecord showsthatamongsttheignorant,whocould neitherreadnorwrite,therewerebeforethe courts,outofevery100,000,notlessthan 751persons.Oftheinstructedinthesecond class,outofevery100,000,thereweremore betorethecourts-therewere942;andof thebetterinstructed,outofevery100,000 therewere1269beforethecourts.(Cheers.) Sotheysawthatthisinstructionwithout religionuiasputtingdangerousweaponsinto thehandsofmenwithoutteachingthemhow tousethem,andresultedintheirdoing damagetothemselvesandothersandifwe couldonlyfindouthowmucheviltheydid, Weshouldfindouttheconsequenceofkeeping God'sinfluenceandpoweroutoftheminds andheartsoftheyoung,.(Applause.)Now, forthewomenunderreligiousinstruction, andundertheinfluenceofthepurelivesand holyteachingofwomenwhodedicatethemselvestotheserviceofJesusChrist.Among theignorant,outofevery100,000,insteadof 751therewereonly193broughtbeforethe courts;oftheslightlyinstructed,insteadof 912therewereonly152outofevery100,000 broughtbeforethecourtsandoutofthe betterinstructed,outofevery100,000,insteadof126:1,therewereonly66brought beforethecourts.(Loudcheers.)So theyfoundthatinproportionastheyrecta)dinstructioncombinedwiththe teachingsofholyreligiontheyhadbeen limeandholy,whilethemoretheyreceived meresecularinstructionsotheybecame moreandmoredepraved.liedidnotspeak againstsecularinstruction,buthesaid, "Bringinmorereligion.Ifyourteaisnot swsetenough,putmoresugarintoit." (Cheersandlaughter.)Nowliewasnot goingtospeakofanyleagueinBelgium,or anyleagueinFrance,oranyleagueinGermany,Litthewasgoingtospeakofaleague thathadjustbuddedoutofthegroundin thisbeautifulspring:-weather.(Laughter.) Thisleaguesaysthat"amongstallnations religiousinstructionisheldtobesupremely important,"andyetwasdoingallitcould -well,hewouldnotsaydoingallitcould toslimeitoutaltogether-butonlyleaves enoughofittoletpeopleknowthatitwas thereonce,butitisnottherenow.(('heers.) Thegentlemenhadpublishedamanifestoandwhilehewishedtospeakofallpersons withgreatrespect,yetitwasonlyfairthat heshouldsaywhathethoughtoftheir system,astheyhadarighttosaywhatthey thoughtofhis.Thesegentlemenhadpublishedamanifestoofwhattheycalledthe NewSmithWalesPublicSchoolLeague,for makingprimaryeducationnational,secular, compulsory,andfree.Heshouldgiveita differentname,andcallitthemanifestoof theNewSouthWalesPublicSchoolLeague, formakingprimaryeducationsectarian, cruel,tyrannical,anddebasing.(Cheers.) Iledidnotthinkthesegentlemenmeant this,buthew,sguidedbytheresultsof certainprinciples,andhethoughttheresults ofthoseprincipleslaiddowninthemanifestowetildbetomakeeducationsectarian, cruel,tyrannical,anddebasingLettlem cometothepoint.Weretheseschoolsfor thechildrenofthewealthymerchant,the richsquatter,theflourishingtradesmen,or menofsubstance?Ohno.Therewasvery little(glanceofaleaguebeingformedto forcetheirchildrenintoschoolswithout religion.Thissystemwasbroughtforward forthechildrenofthepoor-thehelpless poir.(Cheers.)Thissystemwasnot national,becauseitwouldsimplyreachthe poormanandthepoorwomanwhohaveno moneyiopayfortheirchildren'seducation inaschoolwhereChrististaught.This manifestohadforitsobjecttobringina systemthatwouldtellonlyuponthehelpless poor,anditwasbroughtforwardbymen whowouldneverbeabletoenlistintotheir confidencepeoplewhohavehadexperience ofthesufferingsofthepoor,andthelove theybeartoJesusChrist-menwhohave liednodirectcommunicationwiththepoor, andwhodonotknowthatthepoorhavethe sameinterestintheprinciplesofreligion andthetenderloveofGodasthehighestin theland,althoughtheywereplacedina positionofcomparativehelplessness.It wasforthosewhohadnotChristintheir heartstocomeforwardandbringina measurewhichstrikesdownthepoorwithout

touchingtherich.Thisleaguewascomposedofseveralgentlemen,andhehadtried tofindoutsomethingaboutthem,butno oneseemedtoknowwhotheywere. (Applause.)Theycalleditsecular,butbe calleditcruel.Hethoughtitcruel,because, firstofall,itwasasystemwhichwasfixed uponthehelplesspoor;secondly,becauseit excludesthatwhichthepoorlovebestreligion-fromtheheartsofthechildren; and,thirdly,becauseitexcludesthatwhich isvaluedbyeverymannotaltogether depraved-morality.Itexcludedreligion becauseitwassecular.Althoughitwas saidthattherewasnowishtotakeall religionfromtheschools,everyoneknew thatitwasonlysoughttoleavesomuch religionasmightadmitthethinedgeofthe wedge,andafterwardstheywouldpushit andexcludefromthemreligionaltogether. (Cheers.)Inexcludingreligionthey excludedtheknowledgeofGod,andofJesus Christ,themostperfectexamplegivento manItwastheactionofthisknowledge upontheheartsandmindsofthechildrenitwasonlybythusentwiningreligionwith educationtheirheartsandconsciencescould beimpregnatedwiththeknowledgeofJesus Christandllisdivinelaw.Itwascruelto excludethisteaching,foryouthereby excludedalltruemorality,whichitwas desirablethatthechildrenshouldpossess. Itwascruelwhentheyhadtheevilexamples ofFrance,Belgium,andAmericabefore them,thattheyshouldenforcetheirpoor helplesschildrentobepervertedbyasystem ofeducationthatdidnotsubduethe conscienceanddeveloptheholierandnoble feelingsoftheirnatures,Besidesbeing cruelitwastyrannicalthattheState,or, rather,aknotofgentlemenwhohadformed themselvesintoaleague,shoulddesireto takeoutofthehandsofparentsthedivine andnaturalrighttoteachtheirchildrento believeinthosereligioustruthsthatthey themselveshadbeentaught.Hethought thattherewasnogreatertyrannyinthe world,thanthattheyshouldtakefromthose unablebypovertytohelpthemselvesthis divineandnaturalrightofteachingreligion totheirchildrenasapartoftheireducation. Thoseofthemwhowerewealthymid independenthadthemeansofbringingup theirchildrenastheychoose.Itbrokehis hearttothinkofthistreatmentofthepoor. Butliewouldcomeforwardandsaybeloved themintheirpovertyhewouldgivethem whathecould,thattheirchildrenmightbe pure,upright,andfilledwiththedivine fruitsittheywerenotfilledwiththe richesofthisworld.(Cheers.) 1ie knewwhatpoorpeoplewere.Itwas debasingthepoortotakethisreligionfrom them.liehadlivedamongthem,andmany alessonofdevoutednessandelevatedreligion lucidliereceivedfrontthem.Intakingoutof thehandsofthepoorthepaternalrightof teachingtheirchildrenreligionandforcing themtopayforschoolswheretheycould notsendthem,theyweredepritingthemof theBritishrightofthelibertyofthesubject. liebelievedthatamanwouldpay,andstint himselftoanyextent,inordertofeelthat hulasuniseducated,andthatheiseducating him,ratherthanhavehimeducatedfree.it wasallverywelltosaythatitwaspaidout ofthetaxes,buttheyknewthatthepoor wouldneverfeelthattheyhaveeducated theirchildrenthentselvesunlesstheybring nuttheirmoneytopayforitthemselves. Thesystemoftheleaguewouldbringinto theirheartthefeelingsofslavesinsteadof theindependencethatshouldcharacterizeall English-speakingpeople.Hesaidthenthat thissystemwassectarian,cruel,tyrannical, anddebasing,andhedidnotbelievethat anymanofindependencewouldallowthe helplesspoortocomeunderthetyrannyofa sectthatdoesnotbelieveinanyreligion,or tobedebasedoysnatchingfromthemthe powerofseeingtheirchildreneducated accordingtotheirminds.Theprincipleshe contendedforweretheprinciplesoftwo greatstatesmen,oneofwhomwasformany yearsagreatpowerinEngland,andthe otherwasoneofthegreatestlightsinthe empireofFrance;thoughnotaCatholic. LordDerbysaid:-"Religionisnotathing apartfronteducation,butitisinterwoven withitswholesystem.Itisaprinciple whichcontrolsandregulatesthewholemind andhappinessofthepeople."(Cheers.) 'rimeotherstatesman,Guizot(ofwhomthey hadread'lately,andwhohadjustdeparted intotheotherworld),said:-"Popular education,tobetrulygoodandsocially useful,niustbefundamentallyreligious." (Applause.)Hedienotthinktheycould adoptabetterprogrammethanthat.Hedid notthinkthatanymanorwomanwhohad theloveofGodandhismercifullightin their11ft,wouldallowthepoormanand wornaredeprivedoftheironlyconsolationin-thisworld-theGospeloftheLord JesusChrist,andthehelpthatreligiongives themtobearthetroublesandhardshipsof humanlife.(Cheers.)Itwasagreat pleasuretohimtolaythatfoundation4tone thatday,andhehopeditwouldbeasa protestthattheywouldbringeveryinfluence tobearintheirpowertopreventsectarian, debasing,cruel,andtyrannicaleducation beingthrustuponthoseunabletohelpthetaselves.Letallbedoneincharity,butlet thembestrongupontheirprinciples.Let themboldlyproclaimwhattheybelieveto beright,andbesurethatrightwould ultimatelyprevail.(Loudandcontinued cheenrg.)-Freeman'sJournal.
