Isit,wewonder, beneaththedignityoftheShahtotarn tohisinterpreterandaskhim,"lowdo theyspellWhiginEnglandisitVigh; ortoast-isittos?So,again,the impressionthat"everybodymustbe killedwhoshowsdisrespecttoapoliceman,"wasonethatmighthavebeen easilyrectifiedwithoutanyprofound erudition.WesuspectthathisMajesty wasnotsosuperiorinhisintellectas everybodywishedtoimagine.Those diamondsandthatrigidnessofmanner werenotinfallibletokensof"mind." Butwhydidnottheauthorcondescendtoenquireofsomeonewho knewbetterthanhimself'howtospell theverycommonestEnglishwords,and bowtostatetheverycommonest

ThenewCivilMarriageLawinPrussia hasnootherpurposethentolessenthe poweroftheChurch.Oneoftheofficial papersatBerlin,expressedthisconfidentlyinsaying:-"IfaStatewill contrivetoseveritselffromaChurch, ofwhatevercreeditmaybe,itmust freeitsfamiliesfromtheinfluenceof theChurch,astheexistenceofaState dependsonitsfamilies"-alogic,of whichSataninParadise,hasmadeuse, whenhesaid"Riseandbecome

OnthefifthofAugusttherediedin ParisthelamentedSisterNathalie Narishkin,aRussianbybirtIndescenced fromthesamefamilyfrontwhich sprangthemotherofPetertheGreat. Born13thMay,1820,sheabjure!the RussianChurch15thAugust,1844. Thisfirststephadcostherafearful struggle,thatstruggleoftheheartfor whichJesusChristprepareduswhen Hesaid:"Icometosetamanat varianceagainsthisfather,andthe daughteragainsthermother."(Nlatt.x. 35).Wemeanthatendurancewhichis, perhaps,thehardestofmartyrdoms, atleastwhenGodrequiresitofasoul, whoseloveotHimiscombatedbyan unusualtendernessofaffectiontowards theauthorsofherdays.Suchwas NathalieNarishkin.Shehadnotyet attainedtheageoftwenty-eight,when sheresolvedtofollowmorecloselythe footstepsofourLord;and,inMarch, 1848,sheenteredtheNovitiateofthe SistersofCharityinParis.Afewyears aftershewasnamedSuperioressofthe ConventintheRueSt.Guillaume, whereshedied.Noonewhoapproached hercouldhelpfeelingthathewasin presenceofasoulincontinualunion withUod,andinwhomself-almegaton andtheprofoundesthumilityhadgrown asitwere,intoanothernature.But wehavenotundertakentoenterinto adetailofhervirtues.Weleavethatto someotherpen.ThelifeofSister NathalieNarishkinisdestinedtoexercisearealapostolate.Whatisthepomp oftheburialofthegreatonesofthis wosldcomparedwiththetributepaidto thememoryofthisCatholicSisterot Charity,thetearsofthepoorwho accompaniedherremainstothecemetery?F.Gazarin,S.J.,aRussian converthimself,hadscarcelyrecovered fromanillness,and,inspiteofhisage antiphysicalsufferings,foilowedthe funeralonfoot,leaningonastick.The bodywasdepositednthecemeteryof MontParnesse,where,filteenyearsago, werelaidtheremainsofthatother Russianconvert,theHematiteFather, Schonvaloff,who,speakingofthese amonghiscountrymenwhohadbecome Catholics,said:"Fearnot,littleflock, wearethefruitsofthatunionwhich everyChristianshoulddesire,andwhich, weknow,willtakeplace.Fearnot, oursufferingsandourprayerswillfled gracebeforeGod. ANEWCOLLEGEORUNIVERSITY?

TheBishopofPhiladelphiahas offeredtobuyfrontthetrusteesofthe estateofMr.-layCookeaverymagnificentdomain,lyingaboutsevenmiles fromPhiladelphia.Thisproperty,on whichMr.Cookehaderectedasplendid mansionasaprivateresidencefor himselfandhisownfamily,comprises morethan200acresofland;andupon ithasbeenlavishedmoneyandskill inordertomakeofitanearthlyParadise.Themansionitseltisbuiltoffine stone;inextent,solidity,andbeauty, itrivalsthefinestofyourEnglish countryseats.Thegroundsarevery beautiful,andaltogethertheplaceis fitforaprince.Mr.Cookeestimated itsvalueat£300,000;anditprobably isreallyworththatslim.Butitmust nowbesoldforthebenefitofhis creditors,andthetrusteesarewillingto sellitfor£100,000.TheBishopof Philadelphiahasofferedforitthesum of£60,000;anditisprobablethatit willbesoldtohimforthatsum.Isot notinformedofthepurposetowhich theBishopwishestoconvertthisestate. TenProtestantlaymen,accordingto theLeighChronicle,havejustsecededto Rome,astheresultofamissionofRedemptoristFathersheldatTyldesley.

TheOrientalistslosedtheirCongress lastweekinthisCapitalrathernotably. Inreply,aletterfromtheProtestant BishopofPerth,melifluentlyexhorting bothpartiestoagree,iftheycan, appearedinthesamepaper,December 221874.

Wewillfputasidethematterwhich gaverisetothecorrespondence,as commentatorshavesogenerallyagreed thatfurtherdisputemaynotbeapprehended.Weshallconfineourselvesto afewremarksonsomestatementsmade

Thereisonemeasuretowhichwefeelina specialmannerboundtoallude,and,forthe inceptionofwhich,weareindebtedtoYour Excellency,andthatis,theElementaryEducationAct.BeforetheadventofYourExcellency,thequestionofeducationwasonethat unhappilydividedourcotnmunity;andtheintroductionofasystemofEducation,which wouldgivesatisfactiontoalldenominations, seemedimpossibleofattainment.Thanks, however,toYourExcellency,bythepassing ofthe"EducationActof1871,"ameasureis nowinoperationwhichprovidesforour children,incommonwiththoseofallother denominationsasafeelementaryeducation.

Ihaveonlycarriedouttheiseand beneficentpolicyofHerMajesty'sGovernmentindealing,sofarasinmypowerlay. equaljusticetoallhersubjectsinthecolony committedtomycharge.

Ihavefrontmyyouthlearned,asyouhave learned,thatitisthedutyoftherulerto devotehimselfandhispolicytothebenefit andwelfareofthegoverne1,asitistheduty ofthegovernedtofulfiltheobligationsof goodandloyalsubjects.Ihaveendeavoured tofulfilthedutyimposedonthetothebest oftheuhilitywhichGodhasgivenme. Ihaveseenwithpleasurethatthesteady increaseofCatholicreligiousediteationaland charitableinstitutionshasfullykeptpace withtheprogressthatWesternAustralia hasmade-afactthemorecreditable becausetheCatholichotlyherei:notbyany meansawealthycommunity,andsehid,isa proofofwhatmaybedonebyazealousand self-denyingclergyandapeopleacting,in unitywiththem. Itismyearnesthopethatinthankingyou andwishingyoufarewellthatthegoodseed sownwithlabouranddifficultymaybear fruittothehonorofGod,tothewelfareof man,andtothebenefitofyourselvesandof thewholepeopleofWesternAustralia.

Amongthemanymonstrousabsurditiesbelievedinbytheworldinregard totheHolyCatholicChurchisthat verycommonimputationthatitisthe foeofScientificResearch.Allhistory isthedenialofthis.Theearliest ttitimphsofSciencearcresplendent pi()orstothecontrary.Theig!utof modernknowledgewasnotoriously kindledatthelampofthesanctuary. ButforGod'sChurchduringthose terriblecenturieswhichituniediatety followedthedownfallofPaganIto whenthewholeofthetheeknown worldwasoverrunbybarbarism,every vestigeofclassiccivilizationwould havebeensweptfromthesurfaceofthe earth.Butforthereviledmonksof theMiddleAgesthegloriesofancient literaturewouldhavebeenutterly obliterated.Shelteredunderthenee.beamsofthemonasteries,thepriceless manuscriptswerenotonlypreserved. betmultiplied.'Ilelaboriouscopying ofthescrollsonwhichthesetreasures werepennedwasregardedbytheold priestlyscribesasarelieionsduty.and, forhundredsofyearstogether,that religiousdutywasperseveringlyfullfilled.Hence,tothesenowungratefullymalignedMonksoftheDark Ages-agesthat,but'su,rthem,would, indeed,havebeenswallowedtipLsan universaldarkness.adarknessthat wouldhavebeenonlytooliterallyfelt -tothesereviled,batmostbeneficent monks,theWorldoweseverytinnkit nowpossessesofclassicliterature. Church,andtothetraducingand maligningoftheHolySee.Galileo, insteadofbeingdiscouragedinhis researches,wasfavored,protected,and encouragedforyearsbythechiefsof thePontificalGovernment.In1616he wasgraciouslyreceivedinaprivate audiencebyPopePaidV.Half-a&nettyearsafterwards,in1724,hewas honouredwithsixprotractedaudiences bytimeSovereignPontiff,whoasmarks uthisfavuur,personallylavishedupon himcostlymeinkandrarepaintings. ATRUESTORY.

Theladythenleanedherarms,upon whichsparkledtwosplendidbracelets, ontheedgeofthebox,andonceor twicemovedthemsuddenlysoasto causethemtogiveforthbrightflashes oflight.

Thismanoeuvrehadthedesired effect,forthequeenturnedhereyes foramomentfromthestage,andcast aglance,asingleone,towardsthevain woman.Whetherannoyanceatthu disturbance,oradmirationofthe splendidornaments,wastheexpression ofthislook,remaineduncertain,but MadameDupontsupposedittobethe last,andcastalookoftriumphonthe boxesaround.Inhervanityshe believedthatlookofthequeentohave raisedhertobethemostdistinguished personinthewholetheatre.

Thefirstactwasover,andthelady wasrestingcontentundertheshadowof hersupposedlaurels,whenthedoorof theboxopenedandaservantinthe royalliveryentered.Theladyhadno soonerseenthemanthanathought cameintoherheartwhichmadeitbeat fastinjoyfulanticipation.

Afterthemanhadsaluteciherwith everymarkofrespect,hetoldhiseager listenerthat remarkedhermajestythequeen,had hersplendidbracelets,and couldnotcontrolherwishtogivea nearerinspectiontothesediamonds, whichwerethelargestandmost beautifulshehadeverseen.Her majesty,thereforebegged,andupon thiswordthemanlaidgreatemphasis, thattheladywouldsendoneofher braceletsforhertolookatmoreclosely. Friendshipregard!unheardof Almostoverwhelmedbythegreatnessofhergoodfavour,shequickly disengagedoneofthebraceletsfrom herarm,andhandedittotheservant, whowentawaywiththeassurancethat hewouldbringbackthebeautiful ornamentbeforethebeginningofthe nextact.

MadameDupontandhergratified vanityremainedalone.

Thesecondactbegan,thesecond scenebeganandended,thethirdalso, thenthefourth,andstillthebracelet ofthebanker'swifewasnotbrought back.Astheendofthefithact approached,shebegantobecomealittle

uneasyandcastmorethanoneunquiet looktowardstheroyalbox,wherethe queenseemedtohaveentirelyforgotten her,anddidnoteventurnhereyesher

way.

Whilethesethoughtsofnovery pleasantnature,werepassingthrough hermind,formingapainfulcontrast withthosewhichbadsolatelyoccupied it,thehankerhimself,herhusband, enteredtheboxtoescortherhome.He hadnosoonerheardwhathadoccurred, thanheexpressedhissuspicionthatshe mightmerelybethevictimofapractised thief,whohadobservedallhermovements,andherevidentdesiretoattract theattentionofthequeen.

"Ha,ha!"headdedwithamischievoussmile,"youarenowpunished forthethoughtlessvanitywhichIhave sooftenreproved. Perhapsthis occurrencemaymakeyouwiserforthe future,andifsoIshallbeheartily thankfultotheroguewhohatrendered mesuchapricelessservice."

Shemadenoreply.Afteraconsiderablepausesheobserved,"Butitis quitepossiblethatthequeenwishedfor thejewels,andthatduringtheplay theirreturnwasforgotten."

"Hardlycredible;onthecontrary, quiteincredible,mylove."

"Andwhyideredible?"shereturned rathervexed.

"Becausethequeenevidentlycaredlitteenoughforyouandyourjewels," hereplieddrily,"andtherforewould havebeenlittlelikelytoasktoseethem. Besidesthehumblemintyionrofthe servantmighthavewarnedyou. M.Dupontwassufficientlyacquaintedwithhiswife'sobstinacytoknowthat furtheroppositionwasuseless;he thereforeaccompaniedhertothepolice officerthatveryevening,who,afterhe badbeenmadeacquaintedwiththe occurrence,promisedtodohisutmost toprocurethearrestofthethief.

OnthefollowingmorningasMadame Dupontsatinherboudoirdressedinan elegantcostumeapolicemanwas announcal.Shedesiredthatbeshould beshownin,andreceivedfromhima notefronttheministerofpolice.She toreitopenandreadwithdelight:-

Shewaitednotfortheconclusion; theverypictureofrageanddespairshe rushedfromtheroomandleftthehouse.

Inthecourseofafewhoursthe policeofficerreceivedanotefora thousandfrancs(aboutfivepounds) witharequestfromMadameDupont tomaintainthestrictestsecrecyregardingthisaffair.

Thereportofit,however,gotabroad andM.Duponthadthepleasureof seeinghisprophecyfulfilled,hiswife beinggenerallyhonouredwiththetitle of"VanityPunished."Butshe allowedthismattertoactasasalutary warning;shestrovetoconquerher vanity,andwashenceforthcontent withherhusband'sadmiration,without debitingthatoftheworldingeneral. -Lamp.

ASAPIENTJURY.

Averdictwasgivenyesterday(Sept. 21)intheCentralCriminalt.ourt whichwillmakeitmoredifficultthan evertoexplaintheinstitutionofTrial byJurytothenot-too-intelligent foreigner.Twosisterswerebeforethe Courtasprosecutoranddefenduut. Oneofthem,Agnesbtudholm,had writtenletterstovariouspersonsdescribingtheotherSarahl'ittendreigh, inopprobriousterms,andchargingher withshockingoffences,forwriting whichlettersshewasindictedforlibel. NVhentheevidencehadbeenbeard,and Mrs.Pittendreighhadbeensharply cross-examined,theprisoner'scounsel saidliecouldnotdenythattheletters containedlibellousmatter,andhewould notthereforeaddressthejury.The Recorder,naturallythinkingthatthere couldHOWbebutoneconclusionofthe trial,leftittothejurytosaywhether thestatementsiutheletterswere ornot.Thejury,alterafewminutes' deliberation,returnedaverdictof"Not Guilty."Thisextraordinarydeliverancemovedthemostcautiousofjudges foroncetoexpresshimselfstrongly. Herewasaprisoner,forwhosecase evenherowncounselcouldnotfinda wordtosay,absolvedandacquitted! Thejuryseemtohavetakenhercase upwithresolutionatthepointwhenit hadbecomeabsolutelyhopeless.The Recordersaidthatifsuchaverdictwas tostandnomanorwoman'scharacter wouldbesafeinthiscountry,and declinedtotroublethejurywiththe nextcase.TheeccentricitiesofIrish jurieshaveformedastandingjokeat theexpenseofapeopleaskeen-witted asanyintheUnitedKingdom;but afteryesterday'sexhibitionattheOld Bailey,itwillbewelltosayaslittleas maybeabouttheAdministrationof justiceinIreland.-DailyNews.
