THESEVENTEENTHOFMARCH,last, willbememorableintheannalsofthe YorkCatholics.ThefeastofSt. Patrickwashappilychosenastheday onwhichtolaythefoundatioustoneof anewChurchdedicatedtothatSaint. Theinterestinga..dsolemnceremony wasperformedbyHisLordshipthe bishopofPerth,assistedbytheVery Rev.theVicarGeneralandtheRev, P.J.Gibney,P.P.

Beforeenteringuponarecordofthe days'festivities,wewouldliketospeak ofthelaudableeffortstheCatholicsof Yorkhavemade,inthewayofbuilding, tomeettherequirementsofasteadily increasingcongregation.Theirexample deservestobeheldupforimitationto othercongregations,anditproveshow muchcanbeachievedbywell-directed zealandunityofaaion,eventhough themeansatcommandarebutscanty. Itisnowmorethansixteenyears agosincethefirstCatholicChapelwas erectedatYork.Priortothattime, DivineWorshiphadtobeperformedin privatehouses,inabarnlentforthe occasion,orinaplacelittlebetterthan ahovel,themeannessofwhichforcibly recalledthedaysofilliberalityand persecution.NorwasthefirstChapel erectedmuchmorebecomingthelily andimpressiveritesofreligion.Four walls,aroof,andawoodencrossatthe gableends,isastyleofecclesiastical architectureofwhichtheearlyChristians haveleftusnospecimenornotuouumeut.Thisisamodernstyle,adopted bymostofourChristiancommunities intheerectionofahouseofprayer, andourcountrytownspossessthemof everydegreeofplainnessandugliness. However,thefirstCatholicChapelin Yorkhasdonegoodservice.Foryears itdiddutyalsoasaschoolhouse,and afewloadsofbrickspiledupsomewhere abouttherearofthebuildingprovided aresidenceforthegoodpriestincharge oftheparish.

Thenecessityofasuitableresidence fortheirpriestwasthefirstwhichforced itselfuponthenoticeofthecongregation, andsomeyearsagothewantwas ropeliedbyerectingthemostsightlyand comfortable-lookingcottageresidencein thetownsiteofYork.Nosoonerwas thisbuildingcompletedthanastillmore uigentrequirementasserteditselfinthe wantofschoolaccomodation,andin ordertosecuretothecongregationthe boonoftheSistersofNlercy'slabors amongthem,theBev.P.J.Gibney generou-lygaveuphisnewly-built presbytery,whichhaseversincebeen occupiedbythegoodSisters,andisnow knownastheConventofYork.A handsomeandcommodiousSchool-house hasbeenerectedonasitenexttothe Convent,and.asitis,Yorkcanboast ofthebestschoolaccomodationtobe foundinanyofourruraldistricts. Thesumslaidoutonthetwobuildings amounttooverelevenhundredpounds, thegreaterportionofwhichwaseontrinutedbytheCatholicsinmoneyand inlaborgratuitouslygivenwhilstthe bniVingwasgoingon.Buttheyhave alsohadaliberalsupporterinHis LordshiptheBishopwholargelycontributedandwhohasagainpromisedto aidtheeffortsofthisportionofhis flockbyaddingone-thirdtotheamount ofallthemoneyraisedandcontributed fortheerectionofthenewChurchof York.

Toerectabuildingworthythetitle ofHouseofGodhaslongbeenthe ambitionofthepeopleofYork.lay thepraiseworthywrrkwhichwasso solemnlyinitiatedprosperandafforda solidandenduringproofofthereverence inwhichtheCatholicsholdHisunspeakablenameandtheirHolyReligion!

Thefoundationstoneisblestthis impressiveceremonyis,however,but thefirstofseieralotherbeautifuland instructiveriteswhichHolyChurch makesuseofintheteamingofthe templeswhichherfondthildrenraiseto thegloryofGod,andwherethey assembletoparticipateinthesacraments andlistentoChrist'ssavingtruths, spokentothembyherinfalliblelips. TheChurchusesnothingintheservice ofreligionwhichisnotfirstsetapart toGodbyprayer.Beginningwiththe roughandhiddenfoundations,she

marksthecornerstoneWiththecross, theemblemofChristianity,shewill sooncallagainuponGodtobleuthe finishedstructure.Ithaseverbeenthe practiseofHolyChurch,whenthe meansofherchildrencouldaffordit,to havetheHouseofGodpreparedasa bridea.lortiedforherhusband.Taught bytheexperienee,notofthreeshort centuriesandconfinedtothenarrow spaceofafewtribes,butofalmosttwo thousandyearsandspreadthroughout theglobe,sheisconvincedthatnothing soeffectuallyawesthesoulintoa reverencefortheunseenDeity,or impressesthewindwiththebrightness andgloryoftheKingdomofHeavenas. thesolemnbeautyandthecalmspiel,doorsdiffusedaroundtheearthlyhouse ofGod,theplaceofprayerandmeditation.Thedazzlingimageryofthe inspire,:writeroftheApocalypseisnot lostuponher.St.Johndidnotthink itbeneaththedignityofhisawful subjecttodescribetheholycity,the newJerusalem"ashavingitsstreetsof puregold-anditsgatesofpearl."As si.ethereforewishesthatGodmayhave thefirstslidbestofeverythingfrom hiscreature*sheinvitesherchildrento givetoheaventheadorationofthe spiritaccompauiedwiththehomageof thebodyintheearthlyofferingsmale tothetemplesoftheLord.Andwho canrationallyblameherforthis?Man strivestoshowthegratitudeandaffectionsofthehearttowardshisbenefactorsbythevalueofthepresents whichliemakeshim;andhisconduct isappreciatedaccordingly.Peopletry toprovetheirattachmentandloyalty towardstheirsovereignsbylodging theminrichandlottypalaces,and surroundingthetawitheverykindof magnificence.how,assuchtokensof affectionareyieldedbyanadmiring peopletoadeservingking,whyshould notweuseourbestendeavorstomake knowntotheworldthelove,thegratitude,thedevotionwefeeltotheKing ofKingsandtheGiverofallgood Whyshouldwenotstudyto buildupthetempleoftheliving Godwithatleastequalsplendour?

Theproduce,richandrare,ofthe c.eatio,iisneversowellbestowedasin theserviceandhomageoftheCreator. Thehumanmindputsforthitsglorious powersbestofallwhenitlaborsto awatieethedevotionoftheworshippers ofthatgreatGod,towhommanisso entirelyindebtedforhismentalsuperinrity,hisgenius,andhisintellect. Suchwerethesentimentsthatanimated ourforefathersintheerectionofthose majesticpileswhichstillremainto attesttheirtasteanddevotion.Inevery couittry,butiuauespecialmannerin linglandandIreland,notonlythelarge Cathedraltowns,tuttheremotestparish churchpresentssomerelictoexciteour admirationatthepresentday.

Butifshornofmanyifnotalltheir beauties,andIseeninthestateofsqualid nudityinwhichthey(ouroldCatholic CathedralsandParishChurches)have beet'leftbythebandoffanaticism,they stillexcitesuchreligiousfeelingsofthe beholdernow,whatmusthavebeentheir hallowing,poweruponhismindashe gazeduponthem,freshinallthequiet richnessandgravebeautyinwhich ancientCatholicpietybadarrayed them?Ourreflectionscarryasbeyond theof ofourrecord;butwethink ourremarksarebefittingtheoccasion, andwecertainlycanhavenobetter opportunitythanthepresentfurindulgiiiginsentimentssuchasthelayingof thefoundationstoneofanewChurch inspires.Wecongratulatethegood peopleofYork,andrejoicewiththem frontourheartsontheholyworkwhich theyhavebegunsopraiseworthily. TheChurchtheyhavecommenced,let ithealaboroflovewhichshalltellto theirchildren,andchildren'sehildren, thezealwhichquickenedthemtobuild aH,)iiseofGod.But,perhaps,they willtellusthattheyarepoor,and, consequently,itisimpossibleforthem toemulateourforefathersinthe splendourandadornmentsofthehouse whichtheirpietyisnowerecting.Let themnotbedisheartenedbutrest assuredthattheirunitedlaborsand contributionswillultimatelyrealize theirbestwishes.Formerly,asnow, thereweresplendidindividuals,remark-

ablefortheirreligionsmunificencebut thoughtheybestowedlargesumsof moneyupontheerectionandembellisk. meatofChurches,itwasthepeople,the poorandpiousmasses,whoseunited andwell-directedexertionsstudded everyCatholichindwithsomany majesticChurches.Initiatetheirexample,leanuponyourownstrength. Yourhalf-pence,andpennies,and fractionsofshillingsregularlyand unceasinglycontributed,yourlaborand assistancewillinglyandreadilygivento thework,willproduceaChurchworthy ofyourancientfaithandworthyofyour zeal.

Wehavenotseentheplanofthe intendedstructure,butwehopethat willgohand-in-handwithliberality inakingSt.PATRICK'SChurch,at York,allornamenttothetownand oneensuringcredittothebuilders.

Thelayingofthefoundationstone wasprecededbytheholysacrificeof theMassofferedupintheexisting Chapel,whichwasthrongedwitha mititormiscongregation,andamply provedthenecessityofthenewwork.

Aprocessionhavingbeenformed, headesbybanners,theschoolchildren, theBishop,theClergy,theSisters,the choristersandthemembersofthecongregationatlarge,theylefttheChurch forthenewsite,wheretheimpressive ceremonialofblessingthestoneandthe foundationswasgonethrough.A largecrowdofspectatorsoccupiedthe site,whichwasgailydecoratedwith flagsandbanners,andabeautiful sunnysky,temperedbymildbreezes, largelycontributedtotheenjoymentof thescene;thestonedulylaid,the BandoftheYorkChristianYoung Men'sSocietysetnpalivelystrain, afterwhichtheVeryRev,theVicar Generaldeliveredanimpressiveaddress andappeal,whichwasrespondedtoby acollectionofupwardsof£140towards thebuildingfund.

Itwasmostpleasingtonotethe unanimityandcordialitywithwhichthe CatholicswerejoinedbytheirProtestantbrethrenintheday'sproceedings, andliberalandlargewerethecontributionsthelattermade.

AnelegantluncheonhadbeenprovidedbytheSistersattheschool-house, and,atthecouclusionoftheceremony, fulljusticewasdonetoitLaterin thedaytheBuildingCommitteeand manyoftheCon.iregationmetata socialgatheringheldattheschool-room, HisLordshiptheBishopinthechair, wheresomeexcellentspeecheswere delivered.Theenjoymentoftheday's festivitieswilllongberememberedby thosewhohadthepleasureofbeing present.

ThemeetingoftheQueen'sUniversity thisyearwassignalisedbytheattere!- atitofSirMichaelH.Beach,Chief SecretaryfurIreland.Contraryto expectation,thatgentlemanmadean importantpronouncement.Hedistinctly declaredthatthepresentGovernment wouldmaintainthegodlessCollegesas theyare,wouldincreasetheprofessors' salaries,andevenmightincreasethe amountifnotthenumberoftheprizes, scholarships,andexhibitionsinthe variouscolleges.TheIrishCatholic newspaperssaythatitisjustaswellto knowthusplainlytheviewsandintentionsoftheMinistry.Itismuchsafer tocombatanopenthanaconcealed enemy;andweknowthatMr.Disraeli andhiscolleagues,whatevertheymaybeinEngland,areinIrelandthedecided enemiesofreligiouseducation.Asto theworkingoftheQueen'sUniversity duringthepastyear,asitwasexhibited intheconferringofdegreesanddistributionofprizeslastweek,verylittle

needstobesaid.Aboutthesame numberofstudentswereadmittedto thevariousdegrees.Therewere, perhaps,feweradmittedthisyearthan last,aridoneortwoofthehigher distinctionsandprizeswerenotconferredatall-inconsequence,Ipresume, ofthecandidatesfailingtoanswer sufficientlywell.Itiscuriousthatthe Vice-Chancellorinhisaddressdidnot, asusual,giveanystatisticswhatever. Hemerelymentionedthenamesofa fewstudentswhohadbeensuccessfulin thepubiiccompetitions,orhadreceived anyotherdistinctions;withreferenceto whomitisnecessarytoobserve,thatin mostcasestheirsuccessisreallydueto privatetutors,andnottotheQueen's University.

MOODYANDSANKEY.

Wearejustnowenduringhere,in Dublin,avisitationintheshapeoftwo Americalaypreachers.Theirnames areMoodyandSankey.Theyhave,I believe,beenonthestumpinScotland, andinthenorthofIreland.Thepeople there-thePresbyteriansandothernonCatholics-seemtohaveattendedtheir servicesinnlargenumbersHerethey donotdrawsowell.Somethousands attendedtheiropeningservice,butthat was,asfarasthegreaterpartofthe audiencewasconcerned,outofcuriosity merely,andthefollowingeveningthe audiencewasdiminishedbyone-half. THECfICRCHOFENGLAND. Itisproposedthatthelaityofthe ChurchofEnglandbeadmittedtoa shareinChurchCouncils,especiallyinn theCoulicilsofConvocation,withaview tolesseningtheburdenofParliamentinitsdecisionsonecclesiasticalpoints.Whenwetopsiderthe fituessofConvocation,ofthelaity,and ofParliament,intheirseparateclaims andcapacitiestolecideonecclesiastical points,wecanwellunderstandthatall threetogetherwillmakeacompetentassembly.ThanConvocationnobody couldhelessauthoritative;thanthe laitynopeoplecouldbemoredivided; thanParliamentnoassemblycouldbe moresecular.Howthecombinationof "diffixentials"cantendtowardsunion, orthemultiplicationofweaknessesto strength,wearequiteatalosstocomprehend.PerhapsConvocationwill gainbyshiftingitsresponsibility,the laitybytakingtheplaceofConvocation, andParliamentbydisregardingboth.
