TheQuarterlyisatissuewithMr.Gladstone.Thegreatstone-colouredTory Reviewhasrecentlybeentherostrumofthe ex-LiberalLeaderinhisnewly-assumed characterasananti-Poperycontroversialist. ButtheQuarterly,asalonebefitsit,has opinionsofitsown,andisready,uponany occasion,tomaintainthemtotheuttermost. Now,Mr.Gladstonehasrecentlypropounded therathervitalquestion,inregardtothe ChurchofEngland,whetherornotitis worthyofpreservation7 Thissingularly pertinentenquiryhesetsforth,notinthe Quarterly,butintheContemporary.Canit havebeendeclinedbytheformeras unwelcometotheQuarterlyeditor'sown convictionsandforthatreasonhavebeen relegatedtothepagesoftheContemporary? Anyhow,thenewpolitico-ecclesiasticalpronunciamentoofMrGladstoneappears, unlikehisimmediatelyprecedingone,inthe Gunt:mporaryandnotintheQuarterly,and uponthemorrowofitssoappearingis directlyopposedbytheorganthrough whichtheex-Premierhasjustbeforespoke souncompromisingly.Mr.Gladstone's argumentisthattheutmostpossiblecare mustbetakeniftheChurchofEnglandisto bepreservedfromwhatheclearlyregards astheimminentriskofacatastrophe. Whereupon,saystheQuarterly-"Thereare propheciesthattendtowardstheirown fulfilment;andwemighthavepreferred perhaps,sonicotherprophet.Sincerely believingthattheadviceMr.Gladstonegives isdiemdinaspiritofloyaltytotheChurch, andwithaconvictionthatsheisworth preserving,'atleastforthepresent,wemust observethatwedonotaccepthisdescription ofthepresentposition.Sheisnotinthat conditionofdead-lockthatthenextattempt toturnmustbreakthemachine.Shehasbeen broughtsafelythroughworsetribulations, We.louhtwhetherherdestineddutytowards thenation"-gatheramildwayofputtingit, thisll-"isfulfilled."Imagineforaninstant theChurchofGod,theChurchfoundedby ourDivineLordHimself,havingfulfilledits missionbeforetheconsumationofallthings! Theveryutteranceofthis"doubt"ofthe QuarterlyastowhethertheChurchof Englandhasfulfilleditsdestinedduty impliesanadmissionthattheChurchof EnglandisnottheChurchofGod,isnot theChurchteachingnotonenation,butall nations.Itsverytitle,indeed,isan admissiononitsownpart,thatitisclearly nottheChurchofGod,whichwasavowedly toteachnotonenationalone,but;illnations. "Goandteachallnations,"saidthe Redeemer,andthewordsexpress,obviously andexclusively,themissionoftheChurch CatholicorUniversal.Inregardtothe ChurchofEngland'smission,however,the Quarterly,doubtssimplywhetherithasyet beenquitefulfilled.Ithaspassedsafely beforenowthroughworsetribulatians. TheQuarterlyissimplyatissuewithMr. Gladstoneastoitshavingbeenbroughtnow intoaconditionofdead-lock,thenext attempttoturnwhichmustsnapthe machinery.hardly-onewouldsay-can thishetheindestructibleChurchfounded byOurLordwhentheso-calledbelievers initarecontinuallycryingoutthatitisin danger;justinthesamespiritthatleads Mr.Gladstonenowtodeclarethatthe utmostcautionwillberequiredtopreserve itfromdestruction,or,astheQuarterly, whichconceiveshimtohavegone,perhaps,a littletoofarinsayingthat,hasarather painfuldoubtwhetherithasfulfilledits mission,nottoChristendom,withwhichit hasnothingwhatevertodo,collectively,but withabitofit,thatiswithEngland

thatdirection,itseemsnotimprobablethat thenextwarlikeeventsmayarisebetween JovellarandDorregaray.Thelatterhas contrivedunmistakablytotakeup,forthe timebeing,asecurepositioninCatalonia. Theformer,ontheotherhand,isbelieved tohavemarchedfro:nSarrsiena,inAragon, intotheprovinceofLerida,inCatalonia. SimultaneouslyotherGovernmenttroopsare understoodtobemovinguponUrgel,where, aswehavejustnowseen,Dorregarayis awaitingthem.TheAlphonsistArmyis evidentlysatisfiedasyetwithholdingthe Carlists,asrigidlyastheactualcircumstanceswillallow,withinalinethatmay bemarkedoutfromVittoriatoLogrono, toLaraga,toPentedelaReyna,andonto Pamplona.Meantimetwenty-fivemilesto thenorth-eastofUrgel,uponthefrontier, theCarlistshavesuddenlyinterruptedtheir vigorousendeavourtobesiegePuycerda. Theinterestofthewarisconcentratingin Catalonia.Accordingtotheviewunhesitatinglyexpressedbythekeenestmilitary observerinthiscountry,theskilledmaster ofstrategywhohasbeenwritingforalong whilepastuponthesubjectintheMorning Post-therewouldseemtobenarrowingnow abouttheCarlistArmyinCataloniaoneof thesethreealternatives-eithertofight,to passoverintoFrance,ortotaketothemountains.Dorregaray,therecannotbea momentsdoubt,hasshownconsummateskill inextricatinghisforcesfromthefiery cordonbywhichtheywerethreatenedwith beingencircled.Thegatheringtogether oftheAlphonsistsoldieryinthevalleyof Segre,thewithdrawaloftheCarlistsfrom beforePuycerda,thepreparationsforbattle oncemorenowbeingmade,ontheonehand byJovellar,and,onlieother,byDorregaray, allportendanotherandmoreformidable conflictthananythathasrecentlytaken place,oneontheresultofwhichmaylargely dependthefortunes,notmerelyofCatalonia, but,indirectly,ofallSpain.TheCarlists candonomorenow,afterthreeyearsof heroicendurance,thansubmittheirjust cause,astheyhavebeenpreparedtodoany timeduringtheselastthreeyears,tothe decisionoftheGodofbattles.

TIIEPERSONALITYOFTHE()EVIL.

CatholicBishopsontheoccasionofthe consecrationoftheirmetropolitan,his HolinesssenttheGovernor'swife,LadyVan Strubensee,asplendidcameo,withablessing forherselfandherhusbandandthe Governorwassopleasedwiththisactofthe SovereignPontiffthatatthefirstreception inhispalaceafterthearrivalofthegiftlie proudlyshowedittoallpresent.

ENCOURAGINGTOAGOVERNOR.

TheStraitsTimes(Singapore)hasthe followingcomplimentaryobservationsconcerningSirArthurKennedy,Governorof Hongkong(formerlyGovernorofWest Australia):-"Hongkongisjustnowblessed withanoldwomanofaGovernorwhois possessedoftwoideaswhichmakehis absenceofleavenolosstothecolony,and hispromotionorremovalverydesirable. Oneisthatthe'HeathenChinee'isimpeccableandtheotheris,thatmerchantsand tradersaresonsofperdition,capableof iniquity,andthereforetoberepressedin everypossibleway.Thereisnotadoubt thattheblockadeofHongkongbytheCantonFarmerofCustomsismainlyduetohis wantofpluck.Likeotherbenevolent,kindhearted,andwell-meaningnincompoopsof theExeterHalltype,heiscapableofany iniquityinthecauseofignorant,maudlin sentimentalism."

THEPASSIONFLOWER.

ThePersonalityoftheDevilhasrecently, asourreadersareaware,beenunderdiscussion beforeSirRobertPhilliniore,inhisjudicial capacity.AnAnglicanclergyman,theRev. Mr.Cook,hadbeensummonedbeforehimby aparishionernamedJenkins,towhomhehad refusedtheso-calledAnglicanCommunion. Thepretextforthisrefusalwasthatthe aforesaidJenkinshaddeclinedtobelievein thePersonalityoftheDevil,andhadgone sofarastopublisharevisededitionofthe Bible,fromwhicheveryallusiontohis SatanicMajestyhadbeencarefullyeliminated.Asamerematterofjustice,Mr. Jenkinswisedtoinsistuponhisrightto receiveCommunion.Commentinguponthis singularactioninacourtoflaw,thekeenwittedLondonCorrespondentoftheUnion, afterhavingremarkedthatSirRobertPhillimore,whenhehaulresolvedupontaking timetoconsiderwhatshouldbethenatureof hisdecision,asks-Why,inthenameofcommonsense,thisdelay?Thematteratissue seemshardlytoadniitofamoment'squestion!

WhentheSpaniardsdiscoveredSouth America,theysaw,amongstotherplants newtothem,aclimbingshrub,havingfrom twotothreefruit-bearingflowers,unlike anytheyhadeverseen.Onedayapriest waspreachingtothePeruvians,oraboriginal inhabitants,amidstthewildsceneryoftheir nativeforests.HissubjectwasthePassion ofourLord.Hiseyesuddenlyglancedat thiscuriousflower,whichhunginfestoons fromthetreesoverhead,andlikeSt.Patrick withtheshamrock,hesawwiththeeyeofa saintavividpictureofthesadstoryof Calvary.Theringsofthreadwhichsurroundthecupoftheflower,andwhichare mottledwithblue,crimson,andwhite,suggestedthecrownofthorns,stainedwith blood,tohismindtutoredbymeditation thefivepanthersonthestamens,represented thefivewoundsthethreestyles,thenails whichfixedourBlessedLordtothecross, andthesingularcolumnwhichrisesinthe centreoftheflower,weremadetobring beforethemindofthosewildsavagesthe harrowingsceneoftheSecondSorrowful MysteryoftheMostHolyRosary. Sowithoutbiblesorbooks,didthisholy maninstructhisconvertsonthePassion andtothisdayourbeautifulcreepinggardenfloweriscalled"ThePassionFlower." Inalllanguageitbearsthesamename.YoungCrusader.

WritingaboutRoyalty,saystheDespatch, wemaymentionthatthequestionofprecedencebetweentheDuchessofEdinburgh andthePrincessBearicehasnotyetbeen settled.Thisinspiritingsubjectalmost drovethepresentandthepastLord I,hamberlainsoutoftheirsenses.Ithas beenafrequentthemeofcorrespondence betweentheEnglishandtheRussianCourts. Itssettlementwasoneofthechiefobjectsof theCzar'svisitandits!nun-settlementthe primarycauseofcoldnessbetweenthe EmpressofRussiaandourownQueen.And allthisbotherarisesoutofthequestionas towhichofthetwol'rincessesshallenter thethroneroomfirst,andwhoshallstand DearesttotheSovereign! TheNewYorkSundayMercuryofthe 16thMayisresponsibleforthefollowing statement,whichwilldoubtlesshavegreat intentsforMr.WhalleyandMr.Newdegate tisfreelycirculatedthatthe Queen1sdeeplymortifiedbyMr.Gladstone'spronunciamentorespectingthePapacy,andthatshewrotetotheHolyFather characterizingherlatePrimeMinister's Puritanism'andinjudiciousimpetuosityin severeterms.ItisnosecretthatGladstone hasattendednomeetingofthePrivyCouncil since,andthatDr.Newman,theablePapal refuterofMr.Gladstone'stract,hashad morethanoneaudiencewithherMajesty."

THEHEALTHOFTILEPOPE.

TheRomancorrespondentortheJournal deBruxelleswritesthatinthecourseofa conversationwhichhehaulafewdaysagoat theVaticanwithoneofthePope'smedical advisers,thatgentlemansaidtohim"Undoubtedlyheiseighty-fouryearsofage, andhisdeportment,walk,features,announce oldage.Buthissight,hearing,memory, intellect,vivacityofreparteearethoseofa maninfullvigor.Hishealthisgood,and resisitsincessantwork,misfortunes,and vicissitudeswhichwouldbringdownan ordinaryconstitution.lieis,infact,inperfecthealth,hasnoinfirmities,andmaylive stillformanyyears.Imustalsodeclare thathesubmitshimselfwillinglytoour prescriptionswhichhedidnotformerly. Lastweekhewasbled,asheisalwaysatthe changesoftheseasons.Hismedicaladvisers followtheoldpractice,andhehasnotto complainofit."

LORDMAYOROFDUBLINFOR1875.

TheRevolutionaryonslaughtuponthe Carlistposition,attheverymomentwhen thetelegramsfromMadridwereannouncing thatthetroopsoftheGovernmentwere carryingeverythingbeforethem,hasbeen stayed.Quesada,inlieuofadvancingfront SalvatierraintotheAniescoasregion,has retreateduponhisownfootstepsandtaken upapositiondirectlysouthofVittoria. Inmarchinghisvictorioussoldiersback fromthebattle-fieldofTrevino,hecontented himselfwithlayingwastethecountry, destroyingthecrops,andcarryingoffthe cattle.Aftertheblusteringintimationthat theveteransofDonCarloswerebeatinga hastyandallbutignominiousretreatbeyond theFrenchfrontier,itbecomesperfectly clearthatasmallportiononlyofthetearguardofDorregaraywasconstrainedtopass intoGallicterritory,themainbodyofhis troopshaviligenteredthenorth-eastprovince ofSpain,midwaybetweenthesea-shoreand therangeofthePyrennees.Enteringthe valleyofSegre,hehimselfwaslastheardof atSeodeUrgel.There,orsomewherein

TheGovernorofMalta-aProtestant-at abanquetgiveninhonoroftheCatholic ArchbishopofthatIsland,spokeasfollows ofhisHolinessthePope:-"Idrinktothe healthofthatgreatandsovereignmanwho, althoughdespoiledofall,isyetthemost powerfulmonarchonearth-thatis,PiusIX. THEIRISHPOLICEANDFREI:MASONRY.

RecentlyaletterappearedintheFreeman's JournalurgingontheGovernmentthe desirabilityofforbiddingmembersofthe Irishconstabularytobecomemembersofthe FreemasonSecretSociety.Itwasstated thatapolicemanwhohadjoinedthesociety couldnotwelldohisdutyinthecaseofa brotherMasonaccusedofcrime;and,moreover,itwaschargedthatsomehowmembershipofthesociety"createdahatefulpatronageintheraDksoftheservicet"which means,Isuppose,thatpolicemenarepromotedbecausetheyareFreemasons.The lettercamefromamemberoftheforce,and itwasansweredbyanothermemberofthe force-aMason-who,however,contented himselfwithaveryvaguedenial.Thisis aseriousmatter,andImayaddthatIhave frequentlyheardthatFreemasonshavebeen undulyfavouredinthematterofpromotion insome,atleast,oftheGovernmentoffices inDublin.

TheLordMayorofDublinfor1876was selectedatameetingoftheCorporationon Monday,5thJuly.Thehonourfellon1)r. Owens,aProtestantConservative,whowas proposedbythelion.Mr.Vereker,aConservative,secondedbySirJamesMackay,a CatholicLiberal,andunanimouslyadopted, althoughthegreatmajorityofthemembers oftheCorporationdonotbelongtotheConservativepartyortheProtestantChurch. Wecannot(theNationsays)calltomindan instanceofaCatholichavingbeenselected forthehighestcivicofficeinanycityor towninIrelandwheretheCatholicswerein aminority.

JOURNALISTIC.

StatisticsintheUnitedStatesshowthat duringthepastyear£1,600,000werelostin newspaperenterprise.Anentjournalism, theNewYorkHeraldisstatedtohavelost 500perdiem,or£180,000yearly.Thedaily expensesoftheTribuneamountto£300,of theNewYorkTimesto£200,andofthe Worldfrom£140to£160.Literaryladies woulddowelltocrosstheAtlantic,forfiftysevenwomenarenoweditingjournalsinthe States.

Thefinalresultsofthelatecensusof Irelandhavejustbeentiublishedinaseries oftablesshowingthe"area.housesand population;theages.civilcondition,occupations,birth-places,religionandeducationof thepeople."Alargeamountofvaluableand interestinginformationis,therefore,containedinthesetables.Allthatrelatesto Irelandmustbeofdeepinteresttoevery Catholicintheserealms,andwefeelsure thatourreaderswillbegladtohavelaid beforethemsomeofthemoststrikingresults ofthecensusof1871.

TILEIRISHBRIGADE.

ThestoryoftheIrishBrigadeisOct'ofthe mostinterestingepisodesilltilthistoryof theIrishpeople.Theirardentmilitary spirit,whichisoneofthisresultsoftheir Celticorigin,hadbeenwastedthroughmany centuries,insavagefeudsamongthemselves orinfruitlessresistancetotheirinvadersandwhenatlengthithadbecomediseiplhied underSarstieldandSt.Ruth,andacquireda forcewhichmighthaveyieldedEnglandthe greatestserviceinherensuing.wars,itwas losttoherthroughtheintolerancewhich proscribedthereligionofanation.

Duringthecomaeofalmostacenturythe Brigadewasenrolledillthefrencharmy.and Indanhonorableshun,inallthelitter's 'rightestachievementsinFlanders,Spain, andItaly.Manyinstancesofitsstaunch fidelityandPsdaring,decisivecourage mightbequotedfrontthemilitaryrecordsof those(laysbutoneespeciallymaybe selected,whichinitssingularcombination oftheheroicandthegrotesitue,mustberegardedasverynational.

Cremona,besiegedbyPrinceEugene.anti defendedbytheFrench.wassurprisedone morningbefore(lawn,andwouldinevitably havebeenlostbutforthepromptitudeofthe Irish.Whilethepunctiliousandornate Frenchmenweredeliberatelybuttoningup theirregimentals,theformer,atthesoundof thetrumpets,jumpedoutofbed.and,simply stayingtobuckleontheirciossbeltsand eartouclohoxes,seizedtheirguns,awlhurried tothesquare,where,onforminginfighting order.theircomander'swords,"Halt.!dress!"were.atleastinonerespect.superflous.Theirindifferencetoappearanceson thisoccasionwasallthegreaterthattheperiod wasmidwinter,andthecityWasneartheAlps. Inthisconditiontheywerechargedbythe Austriancuirassiers.Itwassteelcoatsagainst nigh-shirtsbutthelinen-tradeofIreland provedthemoreformidableofthetwo.The Austriansweredrivenback,andtheFrench hadtimetoformandrecoverthepossession ofthetown.Forthisbrilliantservicethe Brigadewashonoredwiththeempathicthanks ofLouisXIV.,andalsohadtheirpay increased. Butthesefearlessfellows,asmaybe supposedcarriedabroadtotheirnewservice notonlytheircourageandfidelity,butall theirexuberanceasIrishmen.Theirrollicking spiritandloveoffunwerequiteasgreat astheirloveoffighting,andattimeswereso opposedtoproprietyanddiscipline,thatthe martinetsoftheFrenchrankshadtomake formalcomplaintsonthematter.Itwason onesuchoccasionthatagreatcompliment waspaidthembythebraveDukeofBerwick, who,however,hadgoodreasontolovethem fortheirdevotiontohisfather.
