THEBANQUETTOTHEGERMANEMPEROR ATMILAN.

DuringthebanquetatMilan,onTuesday evening,therewasanalmostludicrous effusionofsentimentbetweentheGerman EmperorandKingVictorEmmanuel.The latter,plattingthepartofhostinRoyalstyle, proposedthetoastoftheeveningthus-" healthoftheGermanEmperor,mybrother, mydearguestandfriend,Hiehealthofthe Empress,andthewholeImperialandRoyal fatuityofPrussia."HisMajestyadded"Permitme,Sire,onthisauspiciousoccasion, tobecometheinterpreterofthewisheswhich theItaliansjoinwithmeinformingfurthe happinessofyourMajesty,theprosperityof Germany,andtheconstantfriendshipof thetwonations."WhereupontheEmperor Williamreplied-"IthankyourMajesty forthecourteousexpressionsyouhave beengoodenoughtoaddresstome. I amverypleasedathavingatlastbeen abletoreturnthefriendlyvisityour Majestypaidruetwoyearsago,and whichIhadforalongtimepastintendedto return.Iamdeeplymovedbythereception IhavemetttithonthepartofyourMajesty. andinthisbeautifulcountry.Iknowthat thesympathyexistingbetter,nGermanyand Italy,andthepersonalrelationsoffriendship sobalmilysubsistingbetweenus,will contitinetobeaguaranteeforthepreservationofthepeaceofEurope. Ifeela pleasureinhopingthattheserelationswill alwaysremaintheSIDOP,anditiswiththis ishIdrinkthehealthofyourMajesty."

AccordingtothePcrseetranzaofWednesday, theEmperorWilliamhassentatelegramto theEmpressAugusta,inwhich,speakingof thebrilliancyofhisreceptionatMilanupon theoccasionofhisentry,thesceneisstated byhisMajestytodefyalldescription.The Kaiser'sexclamationisstatedtohavebeen inreferencetoLisentry-"Ineversaw anythinglikeitl'"fheilluminationofthe DuonioandthePiazzaarereportedtohave espenallyexcitedhisadmiration.

ANIMPOSINGCEREMONY.

OnFridaylast,intheship-buildingyard oftheMessrs.Green,atBlackwillI,te0screw eonettes,builtbythemforthePortuguese Government,weresolemnly-blessedinthe presenceofavastconcourseofspectators, attractedtothespotnotonlybytheunusual occurrenceofadoublelaunch,butalsoby themorerarerecurrence,inthiscountry,of theceremonybeingaccordingtoancient Catholicusage.

Thishighlyimpressiveandsolemnservice wasperformedbytheRev.FatherStanton, parishpriestofPoplar,assistedbyhismetes theRev.FaltersLawlessandTrumble,with cross.'careranIacolytes,whoborelighted candlesastheywalkedinprocessionthrough entryavailablepertofthevesselsandacross theyard,whichseparatedbothships. Amongthosepresentwhotookpartinthe processionwenoticedCaptainsTestaend Ssmisty°,ofthePortugueseNavy,with severaloftheattaeliCe;ofthePortugueseand BritishCovetnments,anditwastrulyedifyingtoremarktimereverentialairswithwhich ProtestantaswellasCatholicwitnessedthat soleumceremonialandonecouldnothelp feelinghowthemostsimpleritualsofthe CatholicChurchimpressthebeholderwith theconvictionofthatmysteriosspower whichsheexercisestoertheheartsofmenapowerandmajestyimpartedtoherbythe ever-visiblepresenceofitsDivineFounder intheBlessedtier:intent,whosepromiseisto dwellwithherforever,eventotimeconsummationoftheworld,teachingherall truthtotheendoftime. Ottthefollowingday(Saturday)a sumptuousluncheonwasproddedbythe Messrs.Green,whenthechristeningofthe vesselswasconcludedintheusualmanner. (huenamed"BelittledePortugal,"byher GracetheDustlessofSaldanha,assistedby hisExcellencytheDuke,Ambassadortothe BritishCourtfromthatofPortugal,andMr. HenryGreen,ofthefirmofMessrs.Green, thebuilders;theothernamed"indello," byLadySartorious,assistedbyherhusband, SirGeorgeSartorious,AdmiralintheBritish andPortugueseFleets. Attheluncheonmanyeloquentspeeches weredeliveredindicativeofthefrieudly feelingexistingbetweenourGovernmentand thatofPortugal,expressingconfidencethat nothingwouldtranspiretointerruptthose friendlyrelations,proudlydwellingonthe formerprestigeofthePortugueseNavy,at onetimesecondtonootherPowerinEurope. Afterseveralhealthswereproposedand drunk-amongothers,thatofMr.Henry Green,whichwasenthusiasticallyreceivedthedistinguishedgueststooktheirdeparture, highlygratifiedwiththewholeproceedings.

NEWCHAINSFORTHECHURCH.

TheImperialvisittoMilanisaboutto bearitsfruits.AlthoughtheChancellorof theEmpireremainedshutupatVarzin,his hatredtotheChurchseemstohavebeen conveyedtoSignorMinghetti'sheart.New restrictionsaretoheadoptedtotheChurch inItaly.TheCavourianmaxim,"Free ChurchinaFreeState,"hasgrownobsolete, andMinghcttiproposesfreedomofadifferent style.Speakingofthemodebywhichthe ItalianGovernmentproceededtotheseparationofChurchandState,andinquiringwas suchamodelikelytoharmtheStatein future,lieconsoledhimselfandhishearers bysaying"Icouldunderstandthisfearif itwerenottheStateitselfwhichrecognises anddeterminestherightsofallthe associationswhichareinitsbosom,andhence intheChurchitself."Thug,therightsof theChurcharetobelimitedbytheState-a clearimitationoftheBismarekianpolicy. SignorMinghetticontinues-"Wewishthe Churchfreeyes,hutinthecircleandinthe limitswhichtheStateitselftracesforit,and whichmaybesuchasnottooffenditsproper rights."YetMinghetti'spolicywasinspired bytheseparationofChurchandState,and herethedirectinterferenceoftheStatein theaffairsoftheChurch,andthesubmission ofthelattertotheformer,areannouncedas thepolicyofthefuture.AntithePremier thenasks"Andwillitbeimpossiblethat theChurchshouldreturntowhatitsinstitutionrequires?"Probablyhemeanshere thattheChurchshouldreturntothe Catacombs,andleavealltotheItalian Government.Itisratheranoveltytohear anItalianstatesmanteachtheChurchwhat itsinstitutionrequires.Amorewicked spiritisdisplayedbythePremierwhenhe says:-"TheChurch,evenaccordingtothe mostrigidcanonicalforma,isnotthePapacy, northeepiscopate,northeclergy,butalltime faithful;antiallhavetheirrights."Thisis intlicatiteofthedesireoftheItalian Governmenttohavetheclergyelectedbythe people.

CARDINALM'CLOSKEY.

IllsEminencetheCardinal-Archbishopof NewYorkarrivedhereonSaturdayevening.

IleetasmetatKingstownbytheLord Mayor,theparishpriestofKingstown(Very Rev.MonsignorlCabe),andthechaplainof hisEinineeceCardinalCullen,andwas driventoDunlininthelatter'scarriage.He wasofferedthehospitalitiesoftheMansion llonse,buthehad,ofcourse,todeclinethem, andlieremainstheguestofCardinalCullen. OnSundaythetwoCardinalsattended twelveo'clock(High)MassintheProCathedral.Asaconsequence,thesacred buildingwasthrongedalmosttosuffocation, andamongstthosepresentweretheLord Mayor,SirJamesMackey,andotherprominentcitizens.AsthetwoCardinals walkedtogetherthroughthechurchtothe sanctuarytheypresentedaremarkable contrastoneofthetwoillustriousmen walkingwithlightelasticstepandhead erect;theother-thoughbutfiveyearshis senior-walkingwithanuncertaintread,and headbentdown,andshoulder'drooping. CardinalM.Closkeycertainlydoesnotlook nearlysooldasCantina]Cullen.Ofcourse, duringtheHighMassprecedencewasgiven totheVisitorineveryway,and,attheclose, thebenedictionwasgivenbyhiminavery impressivemanner.Onleavingthechurch theCardinalsreceivedanenthusiasticcheer fronttheenormouscrowdwhichhadbythis timefilledupagoodlypartofMarlboro'. streetanIthereisnodoubtthatif CardinalM'Closkey'sarrangementsper- mittedhimtoreceivefurtherhomageatthe handsoftheIrishpeople,theresultwould beextremelygratifyingtohisEminence.

Buthisvisitisofasemi-privatecharacter, andistocometoanendonSundaynext, whenhewillstartfromQueenstownforNew York.Ilewill,however,attendtheannual commencementsoftheCatholicUniversity onThursday,andwilltherereceivean AddressfromtheUniversitystaff.Other addressesaretobepresentedtohimtomorroworthedayafter,anditisprobable thathewilldinewiththeLordMayoron Thursdaynight.Finally,onSunday, yesterday,andto-day,hisEminence,accompaniedbyCardinalCullen,visitedthechief religiousandeducationalestablishmentsof thecity,withwhichlieexpressedhimself highlypleased.

THEPRINCEOFWALESININDIA.

Atthefirstgrandreceptiongivenbyhis RoyalHighnessinIndia-theonewhichtook placeattheGovernmentHouseinBombay ontheeveningofhisarrival-therewere presenttheRajahsofKolapoor,Dhrangdra, liajpeeple,Berle,Loonawara,Oodeypoor, Soonth,Dharampoor,theGaekwarofBaroda, SirSalerJung,andmembersofadeputation representingtheNizamofHyderabad,the MaharajahsofEdur,Mysore,Jan, Nowanuggnr,Thokoor,Bhownuggur,Dewar,

Palanpoor,theNewabsofRahampoor, Joonaghur,Balasirore,andJinjeera,andSir I)eslofSawuntWarree.Thespectacle,as habituallywitnessedinIndia,wasastrange andwonderfulmixtureofthecivilizationof EastandWest,BritishandAngloIndian uniformswiththejewelledgarbofthe nativepotentates-themannersofEurope andtheceremonialsofIlindostan-inthe foregroundtheetiquetteofStJames's,in thebackgroundtillkindsofOriental magnificence.TouchesofEasternmanners weremingledwiththestateattendant, accordingtocustom,ontheHeir-Apparent totheThroneofEngland-thegoldentray ofbetelnut,forexample,goingtheround amongtheguests,eachofIthornhelped himselfasitpassedtoaminutegreentriangle ofthenutfesteredintoapeppervineleaf withaspikeofclove,whiletheutter-danor rose-watersprinklercirculated.Glimpsesof thesplendidtrappingspreparingforhis RoyalHighnessinhisstateprogressthrough Ilindostanarealreadycaughtthrough'this andthatnewspapercorrespondent'sdescription.HereisthejuteforthePrince's elephantpreparinginI.allaNarainDass's workshop-amagnifleentpieceoffinescarlet broadcloth,linedwithkhertrahaslargeasan ordinarycarpetformingthegroundwork This,wearetold,isembroideredwithconventionalIndianflowersindeepgold,toa depthoftwoandahalffeetallround,the corners!hivingpromontoriesofgoldrunning stilldeeperintothecloth.Anexquisite fringeofgoldentassels,withnrichsireeand punkahs,completingthissumptuoushousingYetgorgeousthoughtinsbe,thecost oftheseparticulartrappingsamountingin alltothreethousandrupees,theyareas nothingtothestatejute,forexample,ofthe MaharajahofPuttiala,thatbeingsimply onemassofgoldlace,sostiffwithbullion thatitfailstofallstraightdownoneither sideoftheelephant,whilethesaddle-carpet (ifitcanbecalledso)oftheMaharajahof Burtporeisformedoflimesofsilverover lappingeneanother,highlychasedand exquisitelycoloured.Surroundhowdahsurmountedelephants,thusarrayedwiththe purpleliveriesofBarodaandthecreamand goldliveriesofJoonaghur,andthesplendour ofthepageantpreparingfurthePrincemay beinsomeslightdegreemorereadilyconjectured.

TIlltSHAH'SLETTERTOTHEPOPE.

Thefollowingisthetranslationofthe letteraddressedbytheShahofPersia.to PopePiusIX.,whichwasrecently presentedinaspecialaudiencebyNazarAga:-

"TohisveryvenerableandmostillustriousHolinessthePope,adornedwiththe characterofaMessiah,andelevatedasmuch astheinhabitantsofthecelestialworld. MayhebeassistedbythegraceoftheLord.

"Ithasreachedus,whoareanimatedwith thesentimentofsincerefriendship,that tenderandvenerableletterfrontyour Holiness,ofangelicqualities,tracedbyyou intheabundanceofyourfriendship;that lettermhichhadbeenconfidedtothevery honourableAugustine,BistopofHeraelia. senttousbyyouwithpresents,dearand preciouspledges,illustrioussouvenirs, destinedalwaystostrengthenouraffection.

"Inordertomakeknowninasnoreespecial mannerwhatvalueandwhatconsideration weaccordtotheletterandtothepresentsof yourHoliness,wereceivedthemwithour ownhands,withourownImperialpersonwe spokeinthepresenceofall,asitwasfitting, ofthefriendshipandaffectionofyour Holinessforus.

"Beyondthis,weharethoughtit necessary,inaddressingtoyouthisletter, inspiredbyfriendship,tonotifytoyouour cordialjoyandourparticularsatisfactionfor thismarkoffriendshipandofsincereaffectionwhichyourHolinesshasgivenus.

"Conformably-withyourdesires,the delegatesoftheCatholicreligion,allthe individualsofthisnation,havebeen,and willbe,the3hjectsofgoodwill,receiving everyattentionandallprotection.

"'Itoincreasetheseattentionswehave addressedinstructionstotheGovernorsof Provinces,andformalordersconcerningthe rights,theprotection,andthelibertyof Catholics,inrelationtotheirreligiousbelief.

"And,infact,weregardtheindividuals oftheabove-namedCatholie.nationinhabiting thePersianEmpireasatrustcommittedby yourHolinesstooursafekeeping,and,asis natural,wechargeourselveswiththetrust thathasbeenconfidedtous.Forweconsider yourpersonasthegreatestamongthedisciplesoftheMessiah(Whomwesalute),and forthatreasonworthyofveneration.

"Wedesirethat,thankstothepurityof yourheart,youwillnotforgetitsinyour prayers,andthatourrelationswithyour Holinessmayalwayscontinue.

"WritteninourRoyalCastleofTheran theWednesday,Ribi-vuli-sau,1292.May, 1875."Thenfollowstheimpressionofthe sealandthesignatureofhisMajestythe Shah.

CATHOLICITYININDIA.

ThecensusofIndiashowsthatoutofthe totalpopulationofnearly239niilllionsnot quite900,00oareChristians.Ofthese 250,000areEuropeans,sothatthenative ChristiansofalldenominationsinBritish territorynumberabout650,000.Thisdoes not,however,includetheChristiansofthe nativeStates.MostoftheChristiansarein theMadraspresidency,wheretheynumber 534,000.Ofthesenolessthan416,000are Catholic's.InBombaythereare126,000 Christians,ofwhomnearly83,000are Catholics,sothatitwouldappearthatthe majorityoftheChristiansofIndiaarcthe fruitofthezealoftheCatholicmissionaries, andthatthevariousProtestantsectsform, evenintheaggregate,aninconsiderable minority.

POLANDANDRUSSIA.

TheGermaniawrites:-"Totheendless seriesofatrociousbrutalitieswhichhave beenlatelyperpetratedinRussia,wecan recordonemoreexampleofbarbarismtoo horriblealmosttobecreditedincivlized Europe.Wewereinformedoftheevent aboutafortnightagobyatravellercoming fromPoland,butthinkingtheinformation notsufficientlyauthentic,wehavewaited untilithasappearedinsomeofthePolish papers.TheKrakauerGazettegivesa detaileddeseriptonoftheoccurrence,which wedonothesitatetoconsidernowasa matteroffact.Ontheoccasionofthe Emperor'sanniversary,agreatfestival, whichilluminationandfireworks,was announcedtotakeplaceinthecampofLuck, nearWarsehau.Inordertoattractagreat nianyspectatorsfrontthetownandsuburbs, ithadbeendiscussedweeksbeforeinthe Russianpapers,andwhenthememorableday approached,greatpreparationswereseento havebeenmade,trihumplialarches,withthe Imperialinitials,hayingbeenerected;infact, everythingwasdonetomakethecelebration pompous.Allthisdidnotfailtoproduce itseffect.Towardstheeveningofthegrand daycrowdsofpeoplemadetheirwayonfoot andincarriagestothecamp,towitnessthat rarespectacle.Amongthesewereseena greatnumberofladies,thewiresand daughtersofrichJewishmerchantsofthe town,minhadmadegreattoiletteforthe occasion,especiallydisplayingtheirjewellery. Thefestivalswereintheirfullcourse,and thefireworkscommencingtobeletoff,when thespectators,whohadapproachednearthe camp,remarkedthatpartofthetroops executeddifferentmovementsinlonglines, butthinkingthatthisbelongedtotheprogramme,theydidnottake-fathernotice, untiltheyfoundthemselvesgradually surroundedbythetroops.Suddenly,asif byacommand,thefireandlightswereput out,andascenebeganwhichistoomonstrous tobediscribed.Theunbridledsoldierythrew them:elyesonthepeople,strippedandrobbed themoftheirproperty-,andill-treatedthem inthemostbrutalmanner.Theshoutsof thesebarbariansover-poweredtheshrieksof womenandchildren,manyofwhomefound theirdeathinthiswildtumult.Theothers draggedthemselveshomeexhaustedand wounded,almoststrippedoftheirclothes. Amongthelatterwasacountessandher daughter,whohadcomeaccidentallytotown, andhadattendedatthefestivalhercarriage andhertwoservantshaveneverreturned fromthecamp.Agreatnumberofmenare alsomissingtheyaresupposedtohavebeen killedindefenceoftheirwiresandchildren. Itappearsthatthisatrociousactionhad alreadybeenplannedbeforethefeast,for oneoftheofficers,whoresidedwitharich merchantintown,earnestly,butinvain, warnedthewifeanddaughtersandhis landlordtostayawayIron]thefeast,front whichmaybeconcludedthatheknewof thehorribleeventwhichwastotakeplace. OnthefollowingdaytheinhabitansofLuck sentdeputiestotheGeneralincommandof thedecision,whoTiredinthetown,tocomplainofthesebrutalities,louttheywerenot evenreceived.Intheirdispairtheysenta telegramtotheEmperor,whosearrivalin Luckwasexpected,becauseareviewwasto takeplace.Itmaybethatthetelegramhas beensuppressed,orthattheEmperornever heardofit;but,withouttakingtheslightest noticeoftheaffair,theGovernmenteven refusedtohearanyfurthercomplaints,and thetroopswereorderedtoremovetoanother town."

THEACADEMIA.

TheAcademia,onTuesdayevening,began thesessionof1875-76,attheArchbishop's HouseinWestminster,withthereadingofa masterlypaperbyhisEminencetheCardinalArchbishopupon"InnocentIII.andMagna Charts."Asthisremarkablepaperwillvery shortlybepublishedinitsintegrity,we purposelyrefrain,eutilafteritshallhave wenissuedfromthepress,fromentering intoanydetailedexaminationhereofthe argumentputforwardbyhisEminencein

vindicationofthecoursepursuedatthat mostcriticaljuncturebythegreatPontiff titanseatedopenthethroneoftheFisherman. Forourpresentpurpose,itwillsufficeifwe saythatthereasoningoftheCardinalwas supportedthroughoutbydocumentary evidenceofthehighesthistoricalimportance.HisEminence'sauthoritieswerecertainly diverse,rangingbackfromMr.Stubbsand Mr.FreemantoMatthewofParis,and StephenLangton,Cardinal-Archbishopof Canterbury.Thedriftoftheargumentwas this,thatwi-atInnocentIII.condemnedwas notMagnaChartaitself,butthemannerin ashichMagnaChartawasextortedbyforce fromKingJohnbytheinsurgentbaronsat Runnymede.Incidentally,theCardinalArchbishoppaintedinluridcoloursthe infamousanddastardlycharacterofJohn, themeanest,thebasest,themosttyrannical,andthemosttreacherousofourSovereigns. therewasaveryfullattendanceofthe members,andthepaperwaslistenedto throughoutwithprofoundattention.Atits closehisEminencewascordiallythankedforhiscommunication,andthemeetingwas addressed,amongothers,byMr.Allies,by LordArundel,andMonsignorPatterson.

ANTI-BIBLEPROTESTANTSINAMERICA.

Thenon-Catholics,however,cannotagreeanionthemselvesonthequestionofthe Bibleintheschools.Atarecentmeetingof theBoardofEducationinatowninNew Jerseythefollowingpreambleandresolutions werepresentedforadoption:"Whereas,theConstitutionoftheUnited Statesdoesnotrecogniseanyparticularform ofreligiousworship,grantingtoeachcitizen therighttofollowhisownopinionsusfaras religionisconcernedand,whereas,the teachingsoftheBiblearcwholly,orinpart, rejectedbyagreatmanyofourcitizens and,whereas,muchvaluabletimeiswasted byreadingportionsoftheBibleduringschool hours;thereforebeitresolved,thatthe customaryreadingoftheBibleattheopen- ingofschoolbeandthesameishereby abolished,"

Thepresentationoftheresolutionthrew themembersoftheboardatonceintoastate ofexcitennnt,andaveryheateddebate ensued.Mr.Ackermandenouncedthe resolutioninthestrongestpossibleterms,andurgedthefactthateverywhereitis customarytoopenschoolexercisesby readingfromtheBible.Mr.Ale.%ersaid, indefenceofhisresolution,thatastheBible isnottheacceptedbookoffaithofthe Citholiesaridthe.lews,itwasnotanactof equaljusticetoalltocompelthemtolisten tothereadingofit.Mr.Langeheldthatit couldhatIlll'10one,andmightbenefitmany. Outsideofthereligionittaught,itleaelas the!mistprefectofiillcodesofmorality. Be.Wall.,declaredhimselfoppo,edtothe useofthe intheschools,butwasyet tompolledtoadmitthatitsteachingscould eagleloirmto!atone.Mr.Meyerdenounced thebooknotonlyasacodeofreligion,but itsmoralteachingsaswell.Itwaslendand obsetneinninnypassse(s,andninnygrand nunv.onlrlbeunwillingtoreadpatsofit inthehearingoftheirfamilies.liehoped theresolutionsWouldbeadoped.TheKoran andtheTalmudwerebetterbooks.Aneffort vtns111:1,10tolaytheresolutionsover indefinitely,but,onthemotionofMr.Klahre, thedi,cussionwaspostponedtillnextmeetingoftie,board.

MEALTIDIES.

Thephysiologyofdigestion,saysthe SanitaryReview,confirmsthetruthofthe followinggeneralobservationsbearingonthe timesoftakingsolidfoodandtheintervals betweentheniitbeing,assumedthatthe saidfoodisofaveragedigestiblequality,and inquantityproportionedtothereasonable appetite,notinexcessI.Foodforthe supplyofthedailywantsofthesystemis mostrapidlyandthoroughly,digestedwhen takenearlyintheday,erethenervousand secretiveforcesareexhaustedbytoil.2. Vapiddigestionintheearlypartoftheday contributestotheimmediatedemandsid motionandinnervation.3.Foodfurthe repairofthecontinuouswearandtearofthe tissuesisinlessimmediaterequest;the completenessofitssolutionisofmore importancethantherapidity,anditisbest takentowardstheevening,whenanoppor- tunityisaffordedforitsleisurelyabsorption duringsleep.4.Thedurationofdigestion bearsaploportiontothequantityoffood eaten.5.Inyouththedigestionisquicker andthestomachsootieremptiedthanin grown-uppersons.6.'Zestbeforemeals makesthedigestionmorecomplete.Exertion immediatelybeforemealsretardsdigestion,andexertionimmediatelyafterwards derangesit.7.Sleepretardsdigestion,hut makesitmorecomplete.8.Alcoholretards digestion,andrendersitalsoincomplete.9. Earnestpreoccupationofmindretards digestion,andmayevenquiteannulit.10. Waterquickensdigestion,andencouragesthe absorptionoffattyandsaccharinematters; butitseffectonthecompletesolutionof albumenisdoubtfulTherecanhardlybe twoopinionsamong,physiologistsastothese facts.Fewastheyare,theymaystillclear upaconsiderablenumberofthemisconceptionsandcontradictionsbegottenbythe traditionalempiricalideasregardingmeals andmeal-times.

TheCatholicJournalofPittsburghasthe followingstrongbuttnottoostrong,remarks uponPresidentGrant'slatespeechi"Hisspeechreadslikethecrudeessayofa school-boy.Itwouldnotbeworththepaper itcovers,wereitnot,fortheterriulyevil consequencesthatwillsurelyfollowitspublication.Itisevidentlyabidforalonger leaseofoffice.Itisbuttheechooftheword ofcommandthatwentforthfromWashington somesixmonthsago,thatthereligiousissues andthepublicschoolagitationwerethecard toheplayedintheStateelections,aridif thesearesuccessful,thenthegrandrallyingcryforthel'residentialcampaign.Butwho wouldimaginethatthePresidentofthe UnitedStateswouldlendhimselftosucha scheme?Butifwecanjudgehiswords,or theyhaveanymeaning,thatisjustwhatU. indeedfromdeterminingwhatspecial acquirementstheywishtheirchildren topossess,andaskingthemselves, "whatisthereintheschooltowhichI amsendingthemwhichwillbelikely toraisethemtothestandardIhavein view,"theygivethemselvesnotrouble inthematter.Uneducatedpeople,who belongtotheworkingclasses,havemost ofthemavagueideaabouttheir"boy" becomingwhattheycalla"finescholar" butthatisadistinctiontowhichthey regardhimasfullyentitled,ifhecan writeagoodhand,issharpatfigures, andcan-correctlyorincorrectlypronouncealongword.Uneducated peoplewhoareincomfortablecircumstances,haveanideathattheir"boy" willlearnwhatisproperforhimto learn-whateverthatmaybe-andhave anambitionperhapsthatlieshouldbe abletoquoteLatinandGreekinthe newspapers.Itisastonishinghow muchthislustaccomplishmentmeans intheireyes.If,whentheclever youthreturnshome,hecansay tohisfatherthatheknowsLatin andGreek,andisonlyabletospout "polluflosboyothallasses"andinforms hisadmiringparentthatitmenusa "thunderingswell,"heissureofa good"tip,"ashavingfulfilledtheend ofschoolboyexistence.Eventheheart ofMr.RA:in.:et.would,weshould think,meltbeforesuchmagnificent attainments.Partiallyeducatedpersons -suchasformthemajorityofthewellto-doclassesandpossessthekind ofinformationobtainedfromthe periodicalliteratureoftheday-expect somethingmore.Inadditiontoali2w sonorousterminationsinthedead languages,theylookforalittlegeneral infinimationoftheFaillecharacteras thatwhichtheyhavethemselves acquired,buttheyhaveveryvague ideasastowhataschooleducation shoulddoforthosesubjectedtoit,and havescarcelyclearerideasastowhat theythemselves desire.Really educatedpersons-whomayamountto oneinathousand-haveverydifferent notionsfromtheseastotheresults whicheducationshoulddIord-beit high04'low-buttmanyevenamong highlyeducatedpeople,iftheydonot happentohavemadethesubjectof educationtheirspecialstudy,havefar fromclearideasastothesortof educationlikelytoproducethebest results.Inthemeantime,ifpersons wouldonlyaskthemselveswhatis reallydesirablefortheirchildrento learn,theywouldfindnogreat difficultyinarrivingatatolerably correctconclusion.Whatisitthat childrenshouldbetaught-highor low-richorpoor? Toreadwell, writewell,composewell,cipherwell, andrecognizetheprincipalfactsinthe historyofmanandoftheworldin whichhelives?Surely.But,morethan this,theyoughttobetaughttobewellbehaved,wellspoken,cleanly,religious, truthful,manly,considerate,,industrious, andobservant.Thisiswhateveryone -nomatterwhathisstation-wants hischildtobetaught,iflieonlyknow hisownmind.Ifliewantshisson toentersomeparticularprofessionfor whichaspecialcourseofinstructionis needed,suchinstructionmustbe superadded.Butwhateveryone wantshissontobetaughtatageneral schoolistobeafine,truthful,manly, goodheartedfidlow,withsuch elementaryknowledge,andhabitsof application,aswillenablehimtomake themostofhispositionandabilities. Thegreatmistakethatpeoplein generalmakewithregardtothe meaningofeducation,aswithregardto almosteverysubjectoutoftheirown business,isthattheywillnot"think" oraskthemselveswhatisreallywanted, butallowotherstothinkforthemand takeitforgrantedthatallwhicha childissupposedtolearnatSchoolisa numberofloosefactsofwhichhemay notsomuchasknowhowtomakeany use.Thus,thegreaterandmore importantobject-afinemoraland mentaltraining,calculatedtoturnouta goodmanandasoundthinker-is overlooked.Andthusitoftenhappens that,whenitcomestothebattleoflife, goodthinkerswhoamuneducatedbeat educatedmenwhoarebadthinkers,and thatthetopboyintheSchoolturnsout averyordinaryman.Thegreatobject ofeducationisoroughttobe-notto

turnoutan"educatedmachine"who candrawoutfactsandfiguresfroma storeof"cram,"asajuggleratafair drawsfromhismouthyardsofendless ribbon-buttoteachhimtothink,so astobeabletousehisfactswhenhe hasgotthem,and,aboveall,tomake himunderstandthatheislayingthe foundationofhisfuturecharacterin everythingthatliedoes,andthatthe wordsthoughtsandactswhichfillup thecolumnofhisdailylife,yieldafar moreimportanttotalandarooffarmore consequencetohisstandingasa"man, thatthefiguresonhisslate,orthefacts thatlietacksontohismemory.Thus itcomesthatthemostimportantthings intheteacherare(first)theinfluence lieexercisesonthemindsofhispupils, andthetonewhichtheSchoolacquires fromhim,and(next)theprincipleon whichheteaches-theprincipleof makingboysthinkforthemselves,and enablingthemtocarryontheirown educationinafterlife.Meremechanicalteachingismeremechanical rubbish.

AMEETINGoftheRomanCatholicsofPerth washeldintheBoys'SchoolHouseon Monday,the17thJanuarylast,forthepurposeofreceivingandadoptingaMemorial totheRightlion.theSecretaryofStatefor theColonies,prayingthatilerMajesty wouldbepleasedtowithholdherRoyal a-senttotheBillwhichwaspassedinthe lastSessionoftheLegislativeCouncilto eat;rhiishinthiscolonyasystemofHigher Eilueationonpurelysecularprinciples.The attendancewasmostnumerous,andthe proceedingsthroughoutgaveampleevidence oftheearnestnessanddeterminationofthe meetingtoprotestagainsttheintroduction ofanysystemofHigherEducationwhich was"purelysecular."OnthemotionofMr. J.'1'.REILLY,secondedbyMr.J.A.LUCAS, isLordshipthelitstioetookthechair. HisLordshipthe11Litioropenedthe meetingbyreadingthepublicnoticecon. veiling,thesame.Hislordshipremarked thathehadalreadygiveninclearand unmistakeablelanguagehisdeterminationto opposeanysystemofEducationthatmight beintroducedinthiscolony,theprinciples ofwhichwerepurelysecular.TheChurch wasopposedtoasystemofeducationfounded onsuchprinciples,andit.seashisduty,as theirBishop,tobringbeforethem,andto alwayspointouttothermtheteachingsof theChurchontheall-importantquestionof Education(loudcheers).Ilewasverymuch pleasedtoseesuchalargeattendance,and LefeltsatisfiedthatthevariousResolutions whichwouldbesubmittedtothemwould receivetheircarefulconsideration.In additiontoaseriesofResolutionsthatwould hesubmittedfortheirapproval,therewasa MemorialtotheRightHon.theSecretaryof StatefortheColonies,prayingthatHer Majestywouldbepleasednottogiveher RoyalassenttotheBillwhichwaspassedby theLegislativeCounciltoestablishinthis colonyasystemofHigherEducationon purelysecularprinciples.ThatMemorial embodiedtheopinionsoftheRomanCatholics ofthecolony.and,hewasconfident,itwould meetwithunanimoussupport(cheers.)As therewasaconsiderableamountofbusiness tohedonethatevening,hewouldmakeno furtherremarksonthequestionofHigher Education,interestingasitwas,butwould calluponthemoverofthefirstResolutionto begintherealbusinessofthemeeting(loud cheers).

Mr.J.T.REILLY,whowasmostwarmly received,saidthathehadbeenhonoredthat eveningbybeingcalledupontoproposethe firstresolution.He,however,couldnotbut expresshisdeepregretthatameetingfor thepurposetheyhadassembledthatevening, wasrenderednecessary(hear,hear).He wasquitesureheechoedthesentimentsof hisco-religionistswhenheassertedthatthey alwaysfeltregretathaving,onthequestion ofEducation,tobesoofteninoppositionto theirbrothercolonists.Onthequestionof theproposedHigherEducationBillthere wasamarkedunanimityofopinion-and thatwasoneadversetoitsintroductionin WesternAustralia(hear,hear).Historians, astheywerenodoubtaware,tookpleasure indenotingcertainepochsintheworld's historyasthe"GoldenAge,"the"Silver Age,"andthe"AgesofBrassandIron," and,consideringthemannerinwhichthey hadbeentreatedbytheLegislativeCouncil, hecertainlythoughtthatthismightbevery aptlytermedthe"AgeofHypocrisy." (Cheersandlaughter.)Ohnootherhypothesiscouldheunderstandtheactionofthe LegislativeCouncilindismissingsosummarilyasitdidtheirMemorialprotesting againsttheestablishmentinthisColonyofa HighClassSchool,foundedonpurelysecular principles.TheLegislaturewereplainlytold thattheRomanCatholicsofthiscolony couldnotconscientiouslypartakeofthe benefitsofaHighersystemofEducation foundedonsuchprinciples;butthisbeing theageof"Hypocrisy,"theLTislature simplysaid-"youprofessopinion(inwhich "youdonotfirmlybelieve,andyoupro"claimdoctrineswhichyouneverpractice,"

"NowtheobjectofUniversityeducation istoformtheentireman,throughand through-totakewhatisbestfromallsides, andtoturnitintoaninstrumentforripening anddevelopinghim.

"Where,however,istrueeducationofthe hearttocomefrom?Itcomesfromthe teachingsofRevelationthroughourLord,

Whatwasthereason,Mr.Reillyremarked, thatRomanCatholicsatthepresentdayare soparticularthatreligionsandsecular kneeledgeshouldgohandIIIhandItwas tonieintainChristiantruths,toassert chiistia11 ,gnia. "Now,CatholicUniversitiesandhigher schoolsarethehomesofsciencethusguarded andilluminated.Theyaretheshrinesof supernaturalLoveandChristianpurity. TheChurch'soneanxietyistofillhercentres oflearningwiththelargestnumberof Catholicyouth;for.whilstsheblessestheir progressinthewisdomofthisworld,she keepsajealouseyeupontheirmoralityand

faith,uponthosetwogreatinstrumentswhich aresointimatelyconnectedwiththesalvation oftheirsouls."

Mr.Randellinhisspeechinsistedstrongly onthecompromisewhichtheArchbishop wasstatedtohavemade,butwhatwasthe natureofthatcompromise?Hewould againquoteArchbishopVaughan,andwhen theyheardwhatthatcompromisewas,they couldiudgeofthecandourandliberalityof Mr.Randell(cheers).HeonlyregrettedthattheLegislatureofWesternAustralia werenotactuatedbythesameliberalspirit astheLegislatureofNewSouthWales. Hadsuchbeingthecase,thePetitionwould havereceivedmoreattentionandtheLegislaturewouldnothaveacceptedsovery implicitlythecompromisewhichitwas allegedhadbeenagreedtobyArchbishop Vaughan(cheers).HearArchbishopVaughan onthecompromise-

"AsregardshighereducationonwhichI antnowdwellingexclusively,theanswer hasalreadybeenmadeforus.Acompromise,ifpossible,shouldbeeffected,yet withoutcedingoneiotaofthoseprinciples whichhaveruledCatholicteachingfrom thefirst.Iliacompromisehasalreadybeen effected.Therefore,Ihavebuttodealnow withaccomplishedfacts.

"NVItilstyoursonscanreceivethehighest advantagesofaUniversitycourse,theycan alsobeimbueddeeplywiththeprinciples andteachingsoftheChurch.Whilstthey areatlibertytotakedegreesandcarryaway thehighesthonours,theymaybesaidat thesametimetoliveunderaroofwhich sheltersthelivingpresenceoftheOldTraditions,andgivesthestrongestguaranteesof CatholicFaith. "Tomymindtheprincipleonwhichthe UniversityofSydneyanditsAffiliated Collegesaremutsallyregulated,manifests abreadthandlargenessofmindwellfitted tograpplewithaualmostovermastering difficulty.This,nodoubt,wasowing,ill greatmeasure,tothetrainingofthoseable Statesmen,Ibelievenearlyallmembersof ourold17iiiversities,whowerecalledupon todeal,inthetirstinstance,withthequestionofhighereducationinNewSetith Wales.Theyhituponasfairandequitable acompromiseascouldharebeenexpected. Theywouldnothearofagodlesseducation, orofgodlesscolleges,theyweretoodeeply imbuedwithgenuineChristianityforthat.

Intheirearlydays,thetraditionsofthepast hungtothewallsofthe01,1Universities, andtheystillmaintainedtheantiquated notion,assomemightcallitatthepresent day,thatman'sheartwantssoftening, moulding,purifying;thatlierequiresan Objecttolove,ashiseyeyearnsforthe lighttoldthatunlessthetrainingofthe risingnomoftheColonybedeeplyreligious, therewillnotbemuchhopeoflayingabroad andlastingbasisofafuturelinipire.'The *holetemperoftheirminds,insofarasI canreadthem,runsinthisdirection:and wherevertheymayhe,eitherdeadoralive, raiselilyfeeblevoicetothankthem,and touttermytributeofadmirationforthe statesmanlikeandCMistianviewswhichthey havebequeathedtousnotviewsunrealized, butexistingandenergisinginourmidst; andrepresentedbyourSydneyUniversity, which,fromtheeminence(inwhichitstands, seems,ontheonehand,tobewatchingthe pregiessofitssonsinthevariouscareersfor whichithadpreparedthemand00the other,tohelookingoverundulatingmeadows onthoseStatelyColleges,whichlendtoitat thesametimedignityandsupport.Great musthavebeentheenergy,hightheappreciationofuniversitytrainingandacademical life,ofthosewhywereabletorealiseinfact, sosplendidanideal!Itisforuswhoare nowreapingtheharvestsownbythem,to emulatetheirvigour,tocatchsonicportion oftheirbetterspirit,todoallthatinuslies tomaintaintheprinciplesonwhichthey acted,andtoadvancetheinterestswhich weretothemsodear. "'TheformalopeningoftheUniversity tookplacein1852.TheVice-Provost,Sir 1'1i:triesNicholson,deliveredaspeechonthe occasionwhichtouchesonthecompromise towhichIhavereferred.Heshowsthat, whilstintheColleges,inwhichthestudents mainlylive,theprinciplesofreligionare carefullytaught,theUniversity,withoutinfringinginanywayonfaith,conscientiously confinesitselftoitsowirspecialbranchesof secularinstruction.And,asifperceiving thattherewasasystemtheoreticallymore perfectthanthepresentone,heputsforward thefollowingapology,wellworthyofa thoughtfulman:-'Inthusabstaining,'he says,fromblendingsecularandreligious teaching,neithertheLegislaturenorthe presentconductorsoftheinstitutioncan permitittobeinferredthatsuchaseparation istobeheldasimplyingindifferenceontheir parttothosehigherobjectsofrevealedtruth, uponthedueperceptionandpractical observanceofwhichthehappinessofall,both hereandhereafter,mustdepend.Itisnot becauseweabstainfrominculcating,thatwe ignoretheexistenceofDogmatictruth. Rejoicingintheblessingofreligiousfreedom, andbelievingthatreligiousconvictionsare themostvaluableofallpossessions,weleave theguardianshipofthemtoparentsand teachers,nhosespecialfunctionitmaybeto assumeandtoexercisesuchatrust.Whilst theUniversitywillnotfailtoinforce,asfar asherpowerextends,acorrectdeportment amongstheralumni,parentsandguardians, orthoseaffiliatedinstitutionswhichwehope toseespringup,andwithwhomthestudents maybedomiciled,willmoreeffectuallyprovidefortheirreligioustrainingandgeneral behaviour.Theestablishmentofsuffragan collegesbysomeofthegreatleading denominationsofChristianswasanevent contemplatedbytheLegislature,andwould, initsrealization,supplyallthatcouldbe

wishedinrenderingourAcademicsystem

complete.Intheeventofsuchaffiliated institutionsbeingcalledintoexistence,their actionmightbecarriedonsimultaneously andinperfectharmonywiththatofthe Universitythosemultifariousbranchesof secularinstruction,whicheducatedmenof whatevercreedmustknow,beingcommunicatedbytheoneinstitution,thereligious trainingandmoralsuperintendenceofthe studentbeingentrustedtotheother.The elementsofgrammar,theprinciplesoflogic, thelawsofphysics,ofmathematicaland chemicalscience,areuniversalintheir nature,andhavenorelationtothoseopinions respectingrevealedtruthaboutwhichmen sooftendiffer.'

"ItisevidentthatthespiritoftheLegis- lature,andofthoseprincipallyconcernedin foundingtheUniversity,wasthatofmaking thebestofaninevitablenecessity.Ifdogma andmoralitywerenottaughtattheUniversity,theyweretobecaredforincolleges, speciallybuiltforthepurposeofgiving religioustrainingandeducationtothe students.WhilstatS.Paul'sthefull principlesoftheProtestantcreedweretobe inculcatedwhilstS.Andrew'swastoteach itsownreligiousdogmasS.John'salso, wastobefreetoinstilintothemindsofthe risinggenerationtheprinciplesofCatholic FaithandMorals.Indeed,morethanthis, theonemainendandobjectoftheincorporationoftheCatholicCollegeofSt,John's withintheUniversityofSydney,wasto carryoutthisverypurposeitistheone dutysingledoutasobligatoryonits directors,beingespeciallyprovidedforin thefollowingwordsofthe"Actofincorporation:"-"Whereasconsiderablefundshave beensubscribedfortheInstitutionand EndowmentintheArchdioceseofSydney ofa'IonianCatholicCollegewithinthe UniversityofSydney,tobecalled"The CollegeofSt.JohntheEvangelist,'sherein thestudentsshallreceivesystesiatiereligious instruction,andbebroughtupinthe doctrinesanddisciplineofthehionian CatholicChurch Beittherefore enacted&c."ThenOftilt'eighteenFellows, sixmustalwaysbedulyapprovedpriests. 'ElieRectormustalsobeapriestduly approvedandtheRomanCatholicArelibishopofSydneyissg,fficiotheVisitorof theCollege.Allthishasbeenenactedby IlerMostExcellent'Majestythequeenby andwiththeassentoftheLegislativeCouncil andLegislativeAssemblyofNewSouth WalesinParliamentassembled. "'Thuswehavethehighestcivilauthoritiesnotmerelysilentlypermitting,but absolutelyobligingustoimbuesystematicallythestudentsofourCollegewiththe SpiritoftheCatholicChurch,andtofix herDoctrinesintheirminds,andtilltheir heartswiththespiritofherMoralityin oneword,strangethoughitmayseem,an obligationislaiduponus,notsimplyby Pope,butbytheCivilPowertocarryinto effectthoseveryprincipleswhichwere taughtbyblessedPeter,whichflourishedin theSchoolofSt.Mark,andwhichtheHoly Seehassounbendinglymaintainedupto theveryhourinwhichwelive.W,are obliged,byanActofParliament,whichhas receivedtheRoyalapprobation,toinculcate systematicallythatveryBodyofTruthand noother,whichweareboundtobelieve throughtheinfallibleteachingoftheChurch. SoatSt.John'swepossessadouble guaranteeoforthodoxyourobedienceto Caesarharmonizingwithourobedienceto God,ChurchandStateputtingusunderselfsameobligation.Here,ourreligion,thank God,hasnottobetaughtbystealthorby permission,orbyfavour,butasasolemn duty,whichweowetoourpositionbefore theworld,andastheconditiononwnich thisCollegewasincorporatedbytheQueen. Hencemyreadinessinspeechto-day,and myopennessinlayingdown,insuchan assemblyasIseebeforeme,theteachings ofourReligiononcardinalprinciplesof highereducation."

Itwasquiteunnecessarytotellthatmeeting thattheiropinionsonthequestionofeducationweretheopinionsoftheentireCatholic world(cheers).Butevenattheriskof tiringtheirpatiencehewouldreadashort extractfromtheIllustratedLondonNews, receivedbythelastsnail,inwhichthe illustriousCardinalManningtellshisreaders whateducationcanonlybeacceptableto Catholics(cheers).Hereitis-

"Onehearsagreatdealnowadaysabout secularEducation.Whatisseculareducation?Isitthefullinheritanceofthe ChristianchildNoforitonlymeans secularknowledge,whichisonlyapartof theeducationtowhichaChristianchildis entitled.Educationmeansthefullpossessionandunderstandingandenjoymentof theinheritanceoffaith,whichthechildhas byvirtueofhisregenerationinbaptism;it isthatChristianEducationwhichwill illuminatehisunderstandingwiththelight offaith,enlargehisheartwithhisloveof hisneighbour,andcultivatehisconscience bythelawofGod.Anyinstructionin whichthesethingsarewantingisnot education.Thereisagreatdealwritten andtaught,Imaysaychattered,aboutthis subjectandevensomeprofessingthename ofChristianseektoseparatereligious trainingfromeducation.Withoutreligion thereisnoeducation.Meresecularknowledgedoesnotformthecharacteritdoes nottrainthesoul.Now,wearesometimes taughtthatitistherightoftheStateto giveasecular,butnotitsdutytogivea religious,education.Itisthedutyofa ChristianStatetotakecarethatbothshall begivenandeveryStatewhichacts differentlygivesupthenameofChristian, Itissaidthatparentssadpastorscan impartreligiousinstruction;butIaskhow canthepoorlabouringmanandhiewife,

whoarepresseddownbyincessanttoil,do thisdutytotheirlittleones?Youallknow thatitisacruelmockeryandaviolationof Christiancharitytosaythatfathersand motherscanteachtheirchildrentheir religiousfaithandgivethemreligious training.Asforthepriestsdoingit,weare quitereadywithallourheartstoimpart religiousteachingtoourchildrenbuthow canwedoitifthechildrenaretakenaway fromusandputinschoolswherenoreligion isallowedtobetaught?"

Mr.Reillyconcludedbyremarkingthatbe beganbyexpressinghisregretthatthere wasanynecessityforthepresentmeeting, andwouldendhisfewremarksbyexpressing hisregretathavingbeencompelledtosay anythingthatmightseemtoappearunkind ofanyone.Inacolonylikeourswe requiredtobeunited,andanythingthat tendedtodestroythatgoodfeelingwhich shouldexistamongallclassesofthecommunityretardedinsomedegreetheprogress ofthecolony(hear,hear).Hewouldlike andwouldendeavourthatallshouldlivein peaceandharmony,-"thestorm,however, wasasusefulasthesunshine."-but,toplease anyone,asolemndutycouldnutbeshirked (cheers).TherewasaveryoldBookwhich RomanCatholics-morethanothers-loved andrevered,andwhichsaidthat"Loveof theneighborworkethnoevil,Love,therefore,isthefulfillingoftheLaws."While, therefore,hefeltconfidentthattheirfellowcolonistswouldreciprocatethegoodwishes towhichhehadgivenexpression,they wouldalsoadmirethereforetheirindependenceandtheirdeterminationtoopposea systemofEducationperniciousinitself,and Which.ifonceestablished,woulddestroythat pondftsilify4101(1rightunderstandingwhich shouldexistinaconmiunitythemembersof whichthe,irethewelfareofoneanotherand theprogressoftheiradoptedcountry(prolongedcheers).

Nowthisresolutionmaybeconsideredin threeparts.Itdealswithourownopinion asCatholicsonthequestionofhighereducation,itdealswithpublicopiniononthe subjectanditdealswiththeformofprotest whichitisourdutytoadoptagainstthe measurewhichhasrecentlybecomelaw.I neednottellthismeetingwhatisthemeaningofouropinionasCatholics,butImay ask,whatisthemeaningofouropinion beforethepublic-intheestimationofour fellow-colonists? Itgenerallyhappensthatinthiscountry thereisnotmuchaccordbetweenthevarious sectionsofthisfourthestate.Asarulewe findthatiftheInquirersupportsacertain measuretheHeraldatoncefallsfoulofit, andinnomeasuredtermsthundersforthits antagonisticanathemas,whiletheW.A. Timesagreestodisagreewithbothandwith surprisingimpartialityequallybelabours both(cheersandlaughter).Butwith referencetothishighereducationscheme, whatisthepositionofthePress?TheHerald ledofftheballandintermsofalmost witheringsarcasmdenounceditasunjustand uncalledfor.NextfollowedtheCatholic Recordwhichwithbecomingmodestyalmost confineditsdenunciationtothereportof ourformermeeting.TheW.A.Timesthen followedpropoundingitsoppositioninprose andpoetry,andlastlytheInquirerjoined inthechorusofcondemnation(cheers). Forthefirsttimeperhapsinthehistory ofthecolony,thepeople,thePress,andthe Priestswereinperfectaccord,andthisI regardasamosttriumphantexpressionof publicopinion(cheers).Buthowactedour Council? 2nd.-'Thatpriortothebillbeingsubmitted totheLegislativeCouncilyourmemorialists convenedapublicmeetingandunanimously passedaseriesofresolutions,whichare attachedhereto,condemningtheproposed HigherSchooltobeestablishedonapurely secularbasisbecauseyourmemorialistscannotconscientiouslyparticipateinthe benefitsofaHigherClassSchoolfoundedon suchprinciples.

3.-Thatyourmemorialistspetitionedthe LegislativeCouncilagainstestablishinga HigherClassSchoolonapurelysecularbusts, acopyofwhichpetitionisalsoattached hereto,buttheprayerofthepetitionwas notaccededtobyamajorityofthreeofthe House.

4.-Thatasyourmemorialistscannotconscientiouslyavailthemselvesofthe advantagesofaHighClassSchoolthe principlesofwhicharepurelysecular,your memorialistsconsideritanactofinjustice, tocompelthemtocontributeastaxpayers tothemaintainanceofaninstitutioninthe benefitsofwhichtheycaninnowayparticipate.

5.-Thatfortheforegoingreasonsyour memorialistspraythatyourLordshipwill bepleasedtorecommendHerMajestynotto giveIlerRoyalassenttothebilltoestablish inthiscolonyaHighClassSchoolonpurely secularprinciples,andyourmemorialistswill indutyboundeverpray&c. Havingreadthememorialandcommented uponitssimplicityandtheabsenceofanything approachingpartyorsectarianfeelinginits expression,andhavingfurtherhumorously criticisedsomeoftheargumentsofthe promotersofthescheme,Mr.Lucasconcluded withtheexpressionofahopethatthose zealousadvocatesofclassicaleducationwould atleastabandontheideaofconfiscatingthe eleemosynaryinstitutionsofacountryforthe erectionofatempletotheirnewidol.The speakerwhowasthroughoutlistenedtowith muchattention,satdownamidstenthusiastic applause.

Mr.Lucas.WhenIleftmyowncountryto settleontheseshores,IthoughtIleftbehind meallthatsavouredofanundueascendancy inmatterspertainingtoreligion-infactI thoughtthatinAustraliaIshouldbeafree maninthefullestsenseofthatexpression (cheers).IhadinIrelandassistedatwhat waspopularlyknownasthe"burialofthe tithes''-themosthatefultaxeverimposed onanunwillingpeople-andsinceIcame hereIheardwithasatisfactionwhichIhave notthepowertoexpresstoyouinwords,of theburialofthemotheroftimetithe,--I meanthedisestablishmentofachurchwhich wasnotthechurchofthepeople-andthis Ithoughtsettledthequestionforever(great cheering).ButnowIfindmyselfmistaken insupposingIwasafreeHUM.Iamtold thattithesinanewformaretobeimposed uponme-thatIshallhavetopayforthe highereducationofotherpeople'schildren uponaprincipletowhichamboundto object.Ifpeoplewantahighereducationfortheirchildrenthanthatofour governmentschools,whynotdoasdo-pay forit? WEhaveanextremelypleasingtasktoperforminheraldingtheestablishment,during thepastmonth,ofaCatholicYoungMen's SocietyinFremantle.Weentertainnotthe leastdoubtofthesuccessfulissueofthe undertaking.TherearenumbersofCatholic youngmeninFremantlewhoarewell capableofconductingsuchaSociety,andall theyneeddoiscomeforthandthetimid willcertainlyfollow.Itmustbegratifying tothepromotersthatalthoughthesubject ofestablishingaSocietywasbutwhispereda weekortwoago,thenumberofmembersare alreadyverycreditableanddailyincreasing. Theadvantagestoaccruefromitsformation aremanifold,andmustbeapparentevento theleastobservantamongstus.Theywere pointedoutinthesecolumnswithinthelast fewmonths,and,hadsuchneverbeenthe case,theyaresoobviousthatitwouldbe quiteunnecessarytorecapitulatethem. WhatasimilarSocietyhasachievedin Perthstandsforthandspeaksforitself.Ile whowillbestowevenacursoryglanceupon theworkingoftheSociety,cannotfailto detectanimprovementinitsmembers traceabletoitsinfluence.Wesubjoinalist ofofficerselectedatarecentmeetingforthe presenthalryear.Itmayeasilybeseen thatsomejudgmentwasexercisedupon theoccasion.Itisoftensaidthatagood generalishalfthebattle,andwhatistrue ofarmiesinthatrespectistruealsoof societies.AgoodPresidentishalfthe successofanysociety.IfthePresidentis energeticandpractical,wemayrestassured thatthoseoverwhomhepresideswillbeso also;and,certainly,theCatholicYoung MenofFremantlearemorethanusually luckyintheirselection.Wemayremind ouryoungfriendsthattheywillhavemany difficultiestosurmountastheSociety advances.Theywillhaveobstaclestooverthrow-obstaclesfromwhichourPerth YoungMenhaveenjoyedanimmunity. Thelatterwhenabouttoformthemselves intoaSociety,foundacapitalLibraryready madeforthem.Theylikewise,thanksto thebenevolenceofourgoodbishop,hada verycommodioushallplacedattheirdisposalformeeting,&c.,andagainwhen neededforthepurposeofsoiree'sorentertainmentstheyhavetheBoys'Schooltofall backupon.Theseareadvantageswhich ourFremantleYoungMenenjoyinamuch smallerdegree.Nevertheless,wearenot afraidbutthattheywillovercomeallthe difficultiestheymaymeetwithontheirway, northattheywill,beforemanymonths, begintoreapthefruitoftheirpresent sowing.Itmaybeinterestingtosometo knowthattheRulesadoptedareidentical withthoseofthePerthSociety,except wherelocalmattersmadesometrivialchange desirable.WeearnestlyexhortthoseCatholic youthsofFremantlewhomaynotyethave enteredtheirnamesdosoatonce,and promisethemthattheywillhavenoreason hereaftertorepentthisstep.Thefollowing gentlemenwereelectedtofillthevarious officespertainingtotheSociety.Rev.J. THEMUSICOFTHEFUTURE.

Thechangesinoursuccessive"Futures," whentheyareofaverymarkeddescription, springalmostalwaysironsasimilarcause. Onemanbecomestheexponentofmany minds,ageneralwant,anamelesslonging, avagueexpectation,anoble,orapparently noble,aim.Athousandskiensofthepast devolveathisfeet,andhefeelsthathemust, whetherhewillorno,disentanglethem anddrawthemonwardtopre-ordainedends. Hecalmlyfacesopposition,forheseesinit animportantelementofsuccess.Hisfoes becomehisfriendsbyexcitingattention,and thusfavourinrealitytheprogressofthe designstheyvainlystrivetocounteract. SuchamanisRichardWagner,nowsixtytwoyearsofageheisafutureinhimself, afutureinmusic.Hehaspoweroverthe future,becausehehastheconvictions,comprehensiveunderstanding,firmconfidencein himself,andatribeoffollowers.Hehasa rootedideathatthelibrettoisthemoreimportantpartoftheopera.Formerlynoone sharedthisthought.Itwasamatterof indifferencewhetheryouflungawayaflorin ornottogetonebeforeyouenteredyour stall.Ifyoureaditdaringthepieceyou onlyfoundhowwidelythe'singersdeparted

fromit,andhowlittleinfluenceithadonthe orchestra.Scarcelyanattemptwasmadeto enunciatethewords,anditwasoflittle consequencewhethertherecitativeswereha alanguageyoudidordidnotunderstand. Musicovergrewthought,andpoetryexpired inatempestofharmony.Musicpredominatedeverywhere.Poetry,dancing,decoration, pantomimeweremerelyherhandmaids,or moreproperlyherslaves.Thereweretastes whichrevoltedagainstthisimperialsway. Gluckstrovetogivetothepiecemore dramaticlife.andcutawaywithoutmercy theluxuriantgrowthofthearia,inwhich themusicforthemostpartdidnothingelse butdisplayitself.Hepreparedthewayfor Wagner.

Mozart,Cherubini,Beethoven,Spohr, Weber,andevenMeyerbeer,eachdidsomethingtocorrecttheexcessivepredominance ofmusicintheopera,butnoremarkable changewaseffectedtillWagnerhaditinhis powertoshowwhathemeant,torebukethe presumptuousforwardnessofmusic,andconfineherwithinmorereasonablelimits.He droppedtheariaanditsextravagances altogether,andevenchangedthenameof operaintodrama.Intheplaceofthearia, whichheregardedasapretentiousinterruption,hesubstitutedamelodiousrecitation, inshort,betweenrecitativeandsong,which deepenedtheemotionalcharacterofthe poem.Helargelyusedalliterationinthe words,andintheorchestraheseekstoinvest thewholedramainanidealmusicalrepresentationofthesuccessivesituations,andan idealmusicalinterpretationofthedramatic charactersthemselves.Nowthisofcourse impliestwothings,first,thatthemusic shouldbeofaverysuperiorqualityand character,andreallycapableofexpressing emotionssomewhataspoetryandpainting mightexpressthem.Itimpliesinthenext placeanaudiencewho-emossiestappreciationishighlycultivated,and,indeed,more highlycultivatedthanitislikelytolieanywherebutinGermany.The"motivos" which(eminentupontheeventsofthedrama areofthemostsubtleanddelicatedescription.Theyconveynomeaningtotuneless ears.(1o,sipandchit-chatbetweenwhiles arefataltoatrueunderstandingofthe masicalpieceitisjealousofanyinterruption,andclaimstobeinitselfaperfect whole. AdiscipleofGrecianart,Wagnerinsists stronglyonthenecessityofamyth,and generallyanationalmyth,asthesourcefront winchthemusicaldramamustbedrawn. TileshehaschosentheTeutonicmythsofthe MeistersiingerofNiirnbergandtheNibeItag,en'Ong.thelegendofTristanand togle.andtheCeltictraditionofLoltengrin, tatsguardianoftheho'ygrail.Itisnotasa cuposersimply,butinhisdoublecapacity ttLustandmusician,thatWagnerstands uusurpas.ed.andhecertainlymarksan imp,'suitepochinthehistoryofhisart. lieitsknownhowtoderivenotchfronthis cUeeeessorsandothersofhisurn knead:i;themintohisownori,inaltongh. Faultsthereareinhisdramaswhichle,will nutsee.forliehasfaithinlitin,11.Monotonousandtediousheissolute'icesbeyond dispute,andhisnever-endingmelodyatlast wearies.Wecannotalwaysheidealising wemustdropnowandthenintosimpleand drollrealities,thatwelimyallthebetter cleavetheheightsoncemore.Thepoetryof musicisforthefew,nottheinany,atleastin thiscountry.Wagnerisinmusicverymuch whatShelleywasinverse.FancyPrometheus UnboundorHellasonthestagefancythe secondpartofFauseonanEnglishstage. Thepopularmindcannotbesustainedatsuch aheight.ItisfaraboveCounts,"orthe "Tempest,"ortheMidsummerNight's Dream."ItistruethatWagnerhas bestowedgreatattentiononthedetailsofhis dramaticreprescleations-onthescenery, thedancing.thepantomime,andallthat takesmostwiththemultitude.Buthehas donethisonaprincipleofhisown,and subordinatedeverythingtohisrulingidea. Suchamanisalwaysthemanofthefuture. unlesshisconfidenceinhimselfisanoverweeningone.Ileisoneoftheheroesof Carlylesworship.forliedarestobehimself andnotanother's.lieispossessedwithan idea,andwhenlieisdeadandgoneliewill doubtlssbesucceededbysomewhowillswear byhisname. Toshoutunderthebannerof"themusic ofthefuture"isnolongerconsideredasure markofvisionarycraziness;yet,forourselves,wedoubtaltogetherwhetherthe idealismofmusic,ofwkchWagneristhe apostle,willeverbeaspopularheroasin Germany.ItisessentiallyaGermanproduct, andlikeotherexclusivelyGermanproducts itnevercanaccomodateitselfwhollyto Englishtastes.Songswithoutwools"can neverobtainthatcurrecyherewhichthey haveinthegreatmitsicalcentresofthenew empire.andevenalongthehanksofrivers. intheheartofgreatforests.inthesecluded valleys,antithehauntedmountain-topsofa landwherethethoughtfularealldaydreamersandsentimenttakeslargelythe placeofthought.Themusicofthefuture maygraduallyevenhereassumemore oftheGermantoneandproveobedient inadegreetotheWagnerinspirations. Foritisoftheverynatureofmusicto beemotionalandconcernedratherwith framesandfeelingsthanwithmore distinctstatesofmind.Itisswayedbythe vagueandthevastitshomeisinthetender anddreamy.Itisalanguageinitself, andtheverylanguageoftheGermanmind. Itbreathesfromdepthsnonecanfathom, overspacesnonecandefine,"Fromthe greatdeeptothegreatdeepitgoes,"speaking allthewayoflovewithoutanobjectand desiresnevertobefulfilled,ofhopethatdies downtodespair,anddespairthatengenders hope,ofproblemssolvedtopresentthemselvesanew,anddoublewhichtakethename

offaith.InsofarastheBritishmindistobe Germaniseditwilllikewiserevelinmusic ofacongenialcharacter,andthoughWagner startedasareformerwiththeintentionof honouringmorehighlythewordsofthe opera,hemayinthelongrancontribute greatlytotheintroductionofastyleof musicinwhichwordswillmeltinsounds and"dying,dying,dying"harmoniesalone willspeaktotheheart. Ourreadersarewellawarethatwedesireto watchthegrowthofaverydifferentkindof music-amusicofwhichthecharmand glorywillconsistespeciallyinenunciating wordsplainly,andinnotconveyingtheir sensetothemindbytoosoftandeffeminate musicalexpressions.Ecclesiasticalmusicis insomerespectstheveryantithesisof Wagnerian.thoughitresembleswhatthe latterprofessestobe,inthatitissurbordinatedtothewordssung-tothevoicesof theinspiredpsalmist'sandprophets,tothe hmynsandlitaniesoftheChurch.Church musicisandoughttobe.theveryopposite oftheatrical,andanexpressiveaccotnpanimenttothelanguageofheartfeltdevotion.

TheGregorianchant,althoughapparently monotonousbearswithinitselfthegermof melodioesindependence.Itmaybedevelopedlikeanyotherelementaryformof music,andembraceawidecircleoftastes withoutbeing,untruetoits(Agile'type.

Thatisalint]ofdevelopmentwhichwe want.asdistinguishedfromtheadaptation toreligiouspurposesofthesecularstyle, whichisnodevelopmentatall.-Tablet.

THEDESIGNFORTHECATHEDRALOFWESTMINSTER.

TheelevationandplanoftheCathedral whichitishopedmaysonicdayorotherarise inWestminsterhavebeenforsometimepast tobeseenintheArchiepiscopalresidence, andtheBuildingNewsoflastSaturday publishesverygoodengraving;ofthem. Permission,itsays,hasbeengiventoitto publishtheseillustrationsbecattseofthe publicationinanotherquarter,withoutthe censentofthearchitect,ofanelevationof thecathedralinaveryobjectionableform. andonecalculatedtogiveveryimperfect ideaofMr.Clutton'ssplendiddesign,"on whichtlieBuildingNewsproceedstocommentasfollows:-

inthematterofearnestnessinreligionthe OatholieChurchofEuropeisfarinadvance ofthe'Protestantchurches.Whateverwe maysayofitserrors,andsuperstitions,and corruptions,itisaliveandfullofzeal,andis astandingrebuketotheapathyofitsProtestantneighbour. "IspentaSabbathinDresden.Itisa Protestantcity.Iwentinthemorningto theLutheranchurch,andtherewere,perhaps, twoorthreehundredpresent.Whenservice wasoverIsteppedintotheCatholiccathedral,andfoundmorethantwothousand there.Alltheseatswerefilled,and hundredswerestanding.Thisisperhapsan exceptiorialcase,foratthecathedralin Dresdenthegreatestpainsaretakentoprovidemusicofahighorder,antitohaveit executedinsuchawaythatyouwouldthink youwereattendingaconcertinsteadofa serviceofworship.Thethrongofpeoplego, nodoubt,tohearthemusic.ButIremember fiveorsixyearsagospendingaSabbathin Worms,whereLutherstoodbeforetheDiet, andthoughthatisaProtestantcity,the CatholicChurchhadmanymoreworshippers init.thanalltheProtestantchurcheshad.

ofnations,wehavethetestimonyofan ableFrenchPresbyterianminister,theRev. M.Coquerel,inthefollowingemphatic language:-

"ThePapalpower,bydisposingofcrowns, hindereddespotismfrombecomingatrocious; thusithappenedthat,intimesofdarkness, wedonotmeetwithanyexampleoftyranny likethatofDomitianinancientRome.A Tiberiuswasimpossible;thePopewould havecrushedhim.Greatdespotismoccur whenkingspersuadethemselvesthatthereis nothingabovethem;thenintoxicationof unlimitedpowerproducesthemostatrocious aggressions."

UponthedissolutionoftheRomanEmpire, andafterthedestructiveinvasionsofthe SlothsandVandals,whennearlyalltheold civilizationhadperished,theCatholicChurch alone,withitscentralexecutiveandjudiciary, remained.Readnowthelanguageof Southey,certainlynofriendofthe CatholicChurch:-

Ishould thinkthereweresixoroughtpriestsinthat onechurchengagedinthiswayanditwas ononeoftheseculardaysoftheweek.noton theSabbath.AndIthensawhowitisthat theRomishChurchgetsstieliaholduponthe people.Itdoesnotdothiswithoutworking forit.IIbeginswiththechildren.Ittakes timeonweekdays,whenallProtestant churchesarcclosed,toinstructthechildren andattachthemtotheChurchandher services.Ithasanarrayofpriests,monks, andothersacredorderstodoitsbidding menwhohaveconsecratedthemselvestoselfdenyingserviceforsmallremunerationtoa lifeofcelibacy,perhaps,inwhichtheyhave nothingtodobuttodevotethemselvestothe interestsoftheChursh.TheB9116,11Church issuppliedwithnemasteriesandotherlarge andrichly-eudiottedconventualestablishments,wheremenorwomenwhoarewilling todevotetheirlivestotheworkoftheChurch aresupported,andfromwhichtheyaresent forthtowhateverservicetheChurchrequires tobeminute.Andthewholesystemisso managedthattheworkisdoneinthemost economicalway.ButwhereistheProtestant Churchinwhichsixoreightmencanbe foundwhowouldtakeanhourortwoiftime onaweekdaytogotochurchandinstruct childreninthetruthsanddutiesofreligion, andlabourtoattachtheir'intheirearlyyears totheChitralanditsordinances?Thereis reasontofearthattherearemanyProtestant parentswhodonotgiveeventotheirown childrensotouchreligiousinstructionas thoseRomishministersdotochildrenin whomtheyhavenospecialpersorvlinterest."

TheportionGinscompletedwillcost4.:S0,000, andonly.15,000ofthisamounthasbeen alreadypromised.Thedesign,asweseeit, isexpectedtotake,accordingtoCardinal Manning'scalculation,morethanacentury tofinish;andthisestimateisnotexcessive ifweconsiderthatveryfewofourold Catholiccathedals,thoughbuiltwhenmoney forsuchpurposeswasfarmoreplentiful thannow.andcouldberaisedinmanymore ways.tooklessthanthattimetocomplete thoroughly.Thematerialproposedtobeused fortheedificeisPortlandstonethevaulting isalsoproposedtobeofthesamematerial theglassusedwillbeBritishplate,setin copperinsteadofleadframes;antithelight willbesubduedbypaintedglass,notfixed inthewindows,ascommonlydone,buthung insidetheouterglazingliketransparencies. Thecathedarl,whencompleted,willbeof thesameleng.htasWestminsterAbbey, thoughmuchwiderandofdifferentproportions.Thearchitecthastaken.asWehate seen,aFrenchtypeforhismodel,antiit wouldliemisleadingtoattempttocompare thedesign,withanyEnglishcathedral, thoughwehaveheardsuchcomparisons made.ThestyleselectedistheGeometrical phaseoftheEarlyPointedstyle-one admirablychosen.notonlyasthepurestbut themostelegantinitsgeneralmasses,as wellasnecessitatingtheleastexpenditureof materialwiththelargestunsupportedarea. Inthisrespecttheplanbearscomparison withAmiensandothercathedralsofthe samestyle."

APROTESTANTONRELIGION INEUROPE.

TheRev.Dr.Furber,ofNewtonCentre, Massachusetts,addressedhiscongregationthe otherdayonwhatherecentlysawduringhis travelsinEurope.Itwillbeseen,asthe BostonPilotremarks,thatwhenhecould findnofaultwithCatholicpractice,hewas compelledtoinsinuateuncharitablyagainst Catholicmotive "Weareobligedtoconfesswithshamethat

"ifthePapalpowerhailnotbeenadapted totheconditionofEurope,itcouldnot havesubsisted.Itwastheremedyfor someofthegreatestevils.Wehavebut tolookbacktoAbyssiniansandttlienial ChristianstoseewhatEtitopewouldhave LecontewithoutthePapacy.itwasmorally andintellectuallytlitconservativepowerof uhristenthee.Po"itieelly,itwasthesavieer ofEurope.For,inallprobability,theWest, liketheEast,musthavefieenoverrunby Mohammedanism,aridsunkinirredeemable degradation,if,inthatgreatcrisisofthe world,theHomanChurchhadnotroused thenationstoaunitedantiprodigiouseffort commensuratewiththedanger.Itsthe frightfulstateofsocietywhichsometimes prevailed,theChurcheverywherepresented acontrollingandremedialinfluence."

"ThePontificalmonarchytaughtthe nationsandkingstoregardthemselves mutuallyascompatriots,asbeiligbothequally subjecttotheDivinesceptreofreligion andthiscentreofreligiousunityhasbeen throughoutmanyagesarealbenefitfor thehumanrate."

Here.again,isthetestimonyofanother philosophicalProtestantwriter,thecelebrated SwisshistorianSismondi,whoexclaims:-

"Inthemidstoftheconflictsofjurisdictions,thePopealoneprovedtobedefender ofthepeople,theonlypacificatorofgreat disturbances.TheconductofthePontiffs inspiredrespect,astheirbeneficencemerited gratitude."

Wewillclosethisarticlewiththefollowing remarksofoneofthegreatestoftileProtestantphilosophersofGermanyinreference totheexercisebythePopes,inancientdays, ofthepowersofumpiresgrantedtothemby theinternationallawsofthoseages, Leibnitzsays:-

"IfallwouldbecomeCatholicsandbelieve intheinfallibilityofthePope,therewould notbere,piiredanyotherumpirethanthatof theVicarofJesusChrist.IfthePopes resumedtheauthoritywhichtheyhadinthe timeofNicholasI.orGregoryVII.,itwould bethemeansofobtainingperpetualpeace, andconductingusbacktothegoldenage."

THEPAPACY.

PROTESTANTAUTHORSONTIIEPore.

ThereareamongeducatedProtestantsof thehigherorder,saystheSouthernGross, ninnywritersofaphilosophicalmind,who, raisingabovethepettyprejudicesofthe nurseryorthefablesoftheSunday-school, anddiscussingthehistoricalphasesofthe Patfacy,admitthegreatbenefitderivedfrom theinfluenceofthebishopsofRomeas patronsofthearts,science,andliterature.

Ito,coc,aProtestantwriter,admitsthis whenhestatesthat"almostallthePopes wereverysuperiortotheageinwhichthey lived,weretheprotectorsofscience,ofletters, andofarts."

Inthishediffersfromthesophomoric essayistsandmagazinepenmenofthepresent day,whoendevouredtotaketheadvantage ofthereligiousprejudicesoftimeignorant andlowerorderofProtestants,andrepresent thevisibleheadoftheCatholicChurchas theembodimentofignoranceandsuperstition.

Deferringtothebeneficentinfluenceof thePopesintheMiddleAges,Aneillon,a learnedGermanProtestantdivine,says:-

Intheageswhentherewasnosocial order,itwastheinthuniceandpowerofthe PopesthatalonesavedEuropefromastate ofbarbarisin.Theykeptuptherelations betweendistantnations.Theywerethe commoncentreandrallying-pointofallthe isolatedstates.Theyformedasupreme tribunal,erectedinthemindsofuniversal anarchy,andtheirdecreesworeasrespectableastheywererespected.Itwastheir powerthatpreventedandstayedthedespotism oftheemperors,thatplacedthewant ofequilibriumanddiminishedtheinconveniencesofthefeudalsystem.

"Itwasbyvoluntaryconcession,notby meansofusurpation,thattheSeeofHome becamethecommonarbitratorand,in virtueoftheinternationallawofflueMiddle Agesalsotheumpire,bycommonconsent,of Christiannations,allwhomwereCatholics inthosetransitiontimes."

WhenSuareztoldthatspuriousSolomon JamesI.thatbyhissenselesspersecutionof Catholicshewasdefilingthememoryofhis ownforefathers,heremindedbinsthat"there "wasnoothertitantheRomanfaithknown inEnglandfromthetimeofitsfirstapostles till1534."Probablynoonedisputesit. Anybodywhodoeswoulddispute,ifhehada sufficientmotive,thattwoandtwomakefour. ButsincetheRomanwastheonlyreligion knowninEnglandtillAnglicanismwas invented,andthetwosystemsagreetogether likefireandwater,itfollowsthattheRoman andAnglicancommunitiesarenotoneChurch, buttwo.Tospeakaccuratelytheyaremore thantwo,sincetheAnglicanisatleasta dozendifferentchurchesinitself;butasall itsconflictingsectsarefoundedonthesame rightofrevolt,andonthedenialofthe unityandauthorityoftheChristianChurch, theymayforthepurposesofargumentbe consideredasone.intheirwarfareagainst theRomanChurchtheyarcone,thoughonly, asSt.FrancisofSalesobserved.innegation."
