Theeffectofthebanquetthere,undera brilliantdisplayofartifice]lightsofvarying colour,musthavebeen,astheverytelegrams describeit,fairy-likeandpicturesquetoa degree.Itmusthavehapsomethingofthe appearence,indeed,ofatransformationscene inapantomime.OnthereturnoftheRoyal bargeafternight-fall,strainingupthe harbourofBombay,thespectatorspresented toviewbythewholeofthewar-squadron, togetherwiththeentirefleetofmerchant vessels,beinglitupfromthewater'sedge tothemast-heads,bouquetsofrocketsbeing firedfromallthefrigates,isalsodescribed asmagnificent.OuSaturdayhisRoyal HighnessquittedtheGovernorofBombay's suhurbenhouseatParrell,andproceeded withhissuitebyrailwaytoPoona,the capitaloftheMahrattacountry.Crossing theCowan,andpassingttroughrichly-cultivateddistrictsladenwithenuresofthepalm, themango,andthetamarin1,thePrinceprouededbythestraniclycircuitousroutetaken bytheascendinglineintheoblestzigzags untiltheheightofKhanilallahaulbeen attained.ThencetheRoyalguestofIlindestanadvanced,inthemidstofgreat rejoicings,tothecityofPoona,wherehewas enthusiasticallywelcomedattheGunesh tilling%theGovernorofBombay'sDeccan residence.HerealoyalAddresswaspresentedtothePrince,conveyiegtohisRoyal Highnessthedeepsatisfactionofthe principleresidentsandpopulationntthe liltpaidtotheircity.TothisAddress thePrincemadeaverygraciousreply, onservingthatheshouldtransmittoher Majestytheexpressionsofloyaltyand attachment,inwhichshewouldgreatly rejoice.liraRoyalHighnessaddedthat,for hisonepart,hewaswellpleasedtoseeat lastwithhismineyesacitywhichheknew tobethecentreoftheintellectualand religiouslifeofthegreatNlahratta.race.He wasgladtobeawarethatitwassostill,containingasitdidoneofthetwochiefcolleges otthePresidency,togetherwithschoolsand othereducationalappliances,bytheaidof whichhewashappytobeassuredthatthe studentsoftheDeccan,alwayswellreputed forabilitycouldavailthemselvesofthe methodsandresultsofWesternlearning combiningthefruitsofEuropeanscience andletterswiththeirownancientliterature andsacredlanguage.
ThePrinceofWales,onthemorningof yesterday(Friday)week,arrivedatBaroda, whereliewasreceivedbytheGuikwar,and SirMailhavaRao,whobothaccompaniedhint totheResidency.Uponthearrivalofthe processiontherethePrinceledtheGuikwar toaseatonhisright,hladhavaRaositting ontherightoftheGuikwar,andMr. MelvillebeingonthePrince'sleft.The strictestetiquettewaspreserved.Aftera feweuumplitnentarysentences,theSirdars presentedanuzzurtothePrince,offeringto hisRoyalHighnessbesidesatterantipan andawreath.ThePrincethenledthe Guiwkartotheedgeofthecarpet,bidding himfarewell.TheRoyalpartythereupon returnedtoBarodaamidgreatcrowdsof people,whodisplayedextremepleasureand enthusiasm.Attwoo'clocktherewasa fightofelephants.Thewholespectacleof hePrince'sarrivalatBarodawassumptuous beyonddescription.Immediatelyuponhis RoyalHighnessappearingwiththeGuikwar thebandsplayedandaRoyalsalutewasfired. The)'enteredagoldenhowdah,hungwith clothofgoldtrappings.TheGuikwarwas onthePrinceofWales'sHeld,Madhava Raobeingbehind.Infrontwasarowof elephantsallkneeling.Thesuitefollowed onelephants,andagorgeousprocessionwas formed.'Tinesidesoftheroadforautile andahalftotheResidencywereornamented withfloralgarlands.therebeingnumerous triumphalarchesbearingsuchinscriptions as"\VelometothePrince,'"GodBlessthe Prince."Firstwentfootmeninscarletand white,carryinggaybannersantispears nextcamemeninscarletantiwhite withbanderoles; thenmarshalmenon rseback.OverthePrince'sheadwasa superbStateumbrella,anduponeachside weremenwavingclothsofgold,yak'stails andfinsofpeacock'sfeathers.ThePausees were,ofallthenativespresentthemost demonstrative,heraldingthePrince's approachwithbarbaricmusic,theblowingof giltandsilverhorns,andtheclashofcymbals. Thereceptionsandthesportsofthe Princealternateashetraverseshisfuture Orientaldominions.OnSaturdaylasthe enjoyedthesportwiththecheetah,staying outfromtheearliestdawntoeleven,the RoyalpartyshootingtheirwaybacktobreakfastinthePalaceofMuckinpoors.Upon Sundayeveningagrandbanquetwasgiven bytheGuikwar,attheMotee-BaghPalace, tohisRoyalHighness,whoafterwardswent onbymoonlighttoMemonobad.Upon MondaymorningthePrinceenteredwith greatgustointoagrandpig-stickingexpedition.Thesportisannouncedby telegramacrosstwocontinentstohavebeen good,and,itissatisfactorytofind,addedto thatstatementtheintimationthatthere werenoaccidents.OnhisRoyalHighness's departurefromBarodaintheeveningof Tuesday,onhisreturnjourneytoBombay thewholeroutetothestationwasmagnificentlyilluminated.ByWednesdaymorning thePrincehadnotonlyreachedtheCityof Bombay,buthadproceededimmediatelyon boardcite"Serapis."HisRoyalHighness, lateintheafternoonofthatday,lunched withtheAdmiralonboardthe"Undaunted." On'ThursdayafternoonthePrincetookhis departurefromBombayforColombo,visiting,onhiswaythither,atGoa,thefamous colonyofthePortuguese.Itissatisfactory tonoteineverysuccessiveannouncement fromtheEastthatthePrincecontinuesin theenjoymentofthemostperfecthealth, andthathisprogressaffordshimthekeenest delight.
ThePrinceofWalesonSaturdaylast,at nineinthemorning,latoatGoafromthe "Serapis,"onboardwhichhisRoyalHighnesshadpreviouslybeenvisitedbythe Governor,accompaniedbyhissecretariesand counciHors.ARoyalsalutewasfired,an iningnseconcourseofspectatorshad assembled,theinfantryandartillerybeing paraded,andthePrincewelcomedonhis dISCnibarkationbytheauthorities,the membersoftheMunicipality,theciviland militaryofficers,andanimposingdeputation oftheCatholicpriesthood.FromthePalace whithertheHeir-ApparenttotheCrownof EnglandwasfirstconductedhisRoyal Highnesswasescorted,withgreatceremony, toviewthehistoricalmonumentsofOld Goa-thePrinceinspectinginsuccession, withtheliveliestinterest,theConventof SaintFrancis,anextraordinaryvarietyof remsrka.bleruinsandrelics,andthevenerable cathedral.
ThePrince'smovementsafterleavingGoa have,tothegreatdisappointmentofevery- body,himselfincluded,beenmodifiedby reasonoftheunfortunatespreadofcholerain somanyunlooked-fordirections.Although thediseaseis,happily,bynomeansvirulent initscharacter,ithasbeendeemedprudent forthePrincetoavoidthedistricttowhich, inthiscomparativelymildform,ithasextended.ArrivingatBeyporeatteno'clock on/tIondaymorning,afterconsultationwith theauthorities,whocameonboardthe "Serapis"forthepurposeofofferingtheir respects,hisRoyalHighnessdecidedupon goingonatfiveo'clockthateveningto Colombo,arrivingthereonWednesday.For thereasonalreadystated,hisRoyalHighness hadnoalternativebuttodeclinetheRajah ofTravancore'sinvitation,muchdisap- pointmentbeingfeltattheabandonmentof theArinatruallayexcursion.ThepreparationsforthewelcomingofhisRoyalHighness iiithsuitablesplendourallovertheMadras Presidencyarereportedtohavebeenupona magnificentscale,anditcanbenowonder, therefore,thattheforegoingoftheexpedi-tionpreviouslyarrangedtohavebeenmade bytheRoyalguestofHindostanhasexcited reereteofaverypoignantcharacter.After entertainingtheMadrasofficialsatlunchon boardthe"Seraphs,'hisRoyalHighness wentinalaunchsomedistanceuptheriver. OnquittingBeyporeitwasintendedthat theSeraphs"shouldtouchatTrevandrum.
THEPRINCESOFINDIA.
PeopleinEnglandsaysAllen'sIndianMail, haveasortofmistybeliefthatthenative princesandchiefsofmodernIndiacantrace backtheirlineage,ifnottheirthrones,toa timewhenourTuetonforefatherswerestill roaming,asuntutoredsavages,intheir nativewood'.Andyet,iuthesplendid arrayofRajahsandNawabswhomthecoming ofthePrinceofWalesbroughttoBomay,
therewashardlyonewhocouldboastofso highandancientadescentasthePrince himself.Withtheexception,indeed,of Udaipurandafewotherhajputchiefs,we questioniftherewasonewhoseprincely rankdatesfurtherheckthanthefirstquarter oftheeighteenthcentury.Mostofthem, atanyrate,aresprung,frommenwhocarved outkingdoms,largeorsmall,forthemselves fromthewrecksoftheempirewhichBehar foundedandwhichbegantobreakupeven inthedaysofAurangyeb.Mostofthemin short,represent.aynastiesatleastasmodern astheEastIndiaCompary.TheNizam himself,hadheappearedatBombay,would havebeena,sereupstartbesideViePrince ofWales,whosedescentfromourEnglish Alfredplaceshimalmostonalevelwiththe oldestPrincesofRajputana.Hisancestor, ChinMichKhan,theoriginalNizam-ulMulk,wasthesonofanofficerinAurangzites service'.TheRajahofKolipurdatesbark toSteep,thefounderoftheNlarithapower inthemiddleoftheseventeenthcenturyThefirstGuikwarofBarodawasa lieutenantoftheMarathaPeshwainthe eighteenthcentury.AliMuraltheMuirof KhairpurinSind,isaprinceofastill youngerline.TheNawabJunagarh,iu Katiawar,representsadonistyfoundedbya soldieroffortunein1735.TheJilinof NawanagarcomesofanoldRajputstuck,but hissovereigntygoesnofurtherbackthan thetimeofHenryVIII.TheRajputThakur ofBhaunagarisyoungerinrankbytwo centuries.NearlyasmodernistheSidi NawabofJinjira,adescendantofthe Abyssinianchiefswhoservedsofaithfully thelastMohammedanKingsofBijapur. TheRajahofIdarinGujaratchitlinsnear kinshipwithJoalipur,butdatespolitically fromabout1721,whenthetwoyoungersons oftheMarwarPrincetuckpossessionofthe realmassignedthembytheireldestbrother thenViceroyofGujarat.Itnetsonlyinthe sixteenthcenturythatthefirstRanofClutch gainedhisfootinginthatprovince.PahlimpurwasfoundedbyanAfghaninthetime ofAkbar. Nawalt fromtheseventeenthcentury. Akbar receivedtributefromtheHindurajahof Rajpipla.Ifirecometootherprinceswho willmeettheirfutureKingelsewhere.We shallfindthatmostofthemdatetheirtitles fromquitemoderntimes.Sindhiaand Hulkararesprungfrontlieutenantsof theMarathaPeshwas.'FiteRajahofPotiala claimsdescentfroma.Tatchiefwhoroseto powerabouttwocenturiesago.Thereigning HouseinKashmirbelongstothepresent century,andtheNawabsofRampurtothe last.Itwasinthelastcenturythatthe presentkingdomofTravenkorwasfounded TheolderdynastyofCochinwasre-establishedwithEnglishaidafterthedownfallof Tippu&time,whenMysorwasalsorestored toitsformerrulers.Inpointoflongand prouddescent,fewPrinceseveninIlajpiitana canbesaidtosurpassthePrinceofWales. TheyoungMaliaronaofMewarornlaipar may,indeed,pointtoalineageennobledby greatnamesandclearlytraceabletothe warriorchiefsofChiltonButJaipurwas foundedinthetenthcenturyandJodhpur inthefifteenth,whilethesmallerItajptit StatesandtheJatStateofBliartphurare ofstilllaterorigin.Inpayinghomage, therefore,tothePrinceofWalesthepride offew,itany,ofthenativeprincescanbe inanywaywounded,noraretheylikelyto forgetthatbutforEnglishforbearancefew ofthemwouldretainthepowertheynow enjoy.
THENEWCATHEDRALATCHICAGO.
Itisnowalittlemorethanfouryearssince thegreatfireinChicagodestroyedthe cathedralinthatcity-abuildingwhichhad onlyshortlybeforebeenrenovatedatmuch expenseandwithverybeautifulresults.Its destructioncausedgreatgrieftotheCatholics otChicagobuttheysettoworktutrebuild it,theBishopinthemeantimeusingashis cathedralachurchwhichliepurchasedfrom theCongregationalists.Thenewcathedral isnowcompleted,anditwasdedicatedonthe 21stinst.Itakethefolioeiugdescription ofitfronttheCatholicReri,tr,onlyadding thattheonlycathedralsintheUnitedStates arethoseoftheCatholicChurch.The Episcopaliansherehavenocathedrals, althoughtheyhaveplentyofso-called bishops:-
"Thechurchisuniversallyadmittedtobe notonlythefinestinChicago,butthefinest intheWest,andasabeautifulepecimenof pureGothicarchitectureitwillnescarcely equalled,certainlyunsurpassed,byanychurchin,heUnitedStates.Thechurchis situatedoppositethesiteoftheoldcathedral, onthenorth-eastcornerofSlateandSuperiorstreets,andfronting,likeitspredecessor,on
State-street,thenaverunningeastandwest, andthetranseptsnorthandsouth.Theentire blockonwhichitisbuiltisthepropertyof theChurch,andcannotbeusedforanyother thanreligiousinstitutions.Thepossibility isthattheepiscopalresidencewillbebuilt totheeastofthecathedral,connectedwith thesanctuary,andfacingsouthonSuperiorstreet,whiletothenorthofitwehopesoon toseeafineschool-houseincourseof erection "1hemeasurements;ofthecathedralare asfollowsextremelength,outandcut,216 feetwidthofnave,80feet,analoftransepts 112feet.Exteriorly,thislatterwidthis continuedtotheextremerearofthebuilding,thespaces,oneithersideofthesanctuary,andbeyondthetransepts,being occupiedbyspacioussacristiesandvestibules, thelatterhavingdoorsleadingoutofthe church.'Fiteinteriorheightfromthefloor totheapexofthenaveis72feet.The heightofthesidewallsis32feettotheroof cftheaisles, anadditionalheightof12 feetofclerestory.Thewallintherearof thetranseptsrisestoaheightof44feet,the toweris98feethigh,ofsolidmasonry,29 feetsquare,fromthesummitofwhichrises agracefultaperingspire,,urtnountedbya Celticcross,reachingtoanextremeheight, fromthestreetgrade,of210feet. "'Theretirethreeentrancesinthefrontof thechurch,tuneoftlembeinginthetower, andthemainentrance,elevenfeetwide,as wellasthethirddoor,openingintoacapa- ciousvestilmle,communicatingwiththe smallervestibuleinthetower,whencea stairwayleadsuptothebelfry.Oppositeto thisattheotherendofthemainvestibuleis thestairwayleadingtotheorganloft.There aretwootherentrancesintothechurch,one ineachtransept,ninefeetwide,andopening intoavestibuleninefeetsquare.Allthe doorsopenoutwards,thusfacilitatingthe meansofexitinaverygreatdegree,and renderingitpossibleforacrowdedaudience toevacuatethebuildinginaeryfew minutes.Allthevestibulesarewelllighted, therebeingsixwindowsintheteamand towervestibules,andtwoineachofthose leadingintothetransepts.
THEARMYOFDONCARLOS.
AreturnofthepickoftheCarlistforces intheProvincesofCastille,Navarre,Biscay, Alava,andGuipuzcoa,publishedinthe(Talon ofWednesday,isworthyofparticularcousideratiun.Fromthisitappearsthatsome distinctivenameisbornebyeachinfantry battalion.ThefirstNavarestibattalion,for example,isknownesthatofEllie)',the secondasLeReyna,thethirdasPrincipe Jaime,thefourthasDonaBlanca,thefifth asInfantaElvira,thesixthasElReyDon Juan,andsumonthroughout.Altogether thereareelevenbattalionsofinfantrythus distinguished.Besidesthesethereareone battalionofInvalids,oneofRods-guard,and oneofEngineers.BeyondtheseandaregimentofCavalry,thereareanumberof irregularbands,technicallypartidas,together withdoctors,armourers,anticommissaries. Thisisthe(7arlistforcenowinNavarre alone,accordingtotheUnion,aforce'tinnedtallyestimatedat12,555soldiers,with729 horses,and186mules.Biscayisheldbyten battalions,havingatotalof6,993soldiers, with125horses,and106mules.Guipuzcoa hasninebattalions,acompanyofPioneers, andacompanyofEngineers,besidespartidav -showingatotalforceof6,291soldiers, with121horses,and100mules.Alavahas sixhetialions,acompanyofPioneers,a companyofEngineers,acompanyotPontooneers,acorpsoflocalVolunteers, pctrtidas,andasquadronofIlussars,yielding atotalforceof5,074soldiers,with172 horses,and106mules.Besidestheseforces therearetheCastilianDivisionof6,393men, 556horses,and32mules;thecorpscalled Centralisados,making.up2,720soldiers,440 horses,mud375mules;andtheArtillery, whichbas88cannon-viz.,sixVavasseur7pounders,fourKrupp8-pounders,six Woolwich7-pounders,34Whitworthgunsof difierentcalibre,threePlacencia8-pounders, 14bronze8-pounders,fourbrotme12pramlyre,twoVarasseur9-pounders,two Whitworth7-pounders,andfour24-pounder mortars.Thenumberofprojectilesmade atLlodioaloneinJulylastwas28,066.In theforegoingcalculationthetotalnumberof menis40,029,butinasmuchasneitherthe BasqueTereios,norJamdesa'sBrigade,nor Dorregaray'stwobattalionsaretakenany accountof,theCarlistArmycannot,aecordingtothisaccountbelessthen50,1100 altogether.These,werepeat,aresimply "thepick"oftheArmyofDonCarlos,they arethechoicesttroopsofanarmyamounting toauaggregateofsomethingmorelike 150,000men.Andthese50,000,referredto bytheUnion,itshouldberemembered,are, asthephraseis,"allthere."Theyarenot carpetsoldiers,busveteransinnuredtoall thetoilsandhardshipsofcampaigning. Hardlyaforce,this,tobescatteredbya flourishoftrumpets!
TURKEY.
Thebeginningoftheendappearstohave openeduponTurkeyinamilitaryaswellas inafinancialpointofview.Atiercebattle wasfought,towardsthecloseoflastweek, betweenthetroopsoftheOttomanPorte andtheinsurgents,astrugglewhichragedall throughtheThursdayandFriday,resulting onthelast-mentionedday,the12thinstant, inthecompletediscomfitureoftheforcesof theTurkishGovernment.From800to1,000 oftheTurkishsoldieryperished,600ofthem woundedand100takenprisoners.Their camp,also,wascaptured.Soexhausted werethevictorsthattheywereunableto followuptheirsuccessinpursuit.Asa flatterofcoursethelattersufferedseverely bothinkilledandwounded,thoughtheir losswasasnothingincomparisonwiththat ofthevanquished.Meanwhiletherehasbeen perceptiblearatheralarmingmilitary activityinRussia.Speeorderswere receivedbeforethecloseoflastweekinSt. PetersburgfromLivadiadirectingthree divisionsoftroopstobeinreadinessfor activeservicebeforeSunday,soastohe enabledtoobey,ataninstant,snotice,the beckoftheauthorities.Thesedivisions consistofthe24thofInfantry,tinderthe commandofLieutenant-GeneralPrince BarklaideTolliWeimauthe2ndof Grenadiers,underthecommandof Lieutenant-GeneralvonZimmermannand the40thofInfantry.Allthetroops stationedintheSouthofRussia,infact,are saidtobeinreadinessforactiveservice. Nevertheless,theintimationcomesbyway ofBerlinthatadvicesfromSt.Petersburg emphaticallydenythesemilitarymovements tobeconnectedwithanypreparationsofa warlikecharacter.Inspiteofthisassurance, therecanbenomistakewhateveraboutit thatthemot-d'ordreintheRussianranksis "Attention!"andthattheCzarandhis Ministersarepreparedforanyemergency.

Theschemehaspeendenouncedbythe publicPressofthiscolony,and,asis wellknown,hasnotfoundfavor amongalargemajorityofthe.settlers, and,further,ithasalsobeencondemnedbythoseoutsideofthe Colonywhotakeaninterestinits welfareandprogress.Thediscussion onHigherEducationhas,however,had onegoodeffect,andthatis-tobring "Slowgoing,little-known,Western Australia"prominentlybeforeout neighbors,andtoconvincethemthat, ifweareaslow-going,weareyet.an ambitiouspeople,andwhenwedo undertakeanything,weaimatnothing lessthanperfectionitself.Wehave, however,ourselves,nodesirethatin WesternAustraliathe"geniusof secularism"shouldshinewithsucha brilliancyastobringuponustheenvy ofourmorego-a-headandpowerful neighbors.Of'thisourfriendscan restassured-thatcomparativelyinsignificantasaretheCatholicsinWestern Australia,wehave,wecarsassert, nevertheless,strength,will,determination,andunity,too,tocombat "SECULARISM,"andtomaintainfirmly therightsandprivilegesoftheChurch ofwhichweareMembers.Here isthearticletowhichwehave referred:-
