TheMemberforMallowhasheregivento thepublicabrillianthistoricalsketchofthe Life,Genius,andCharacterofoneofthe mostgiftedandrenownedofIrishmen.His Studyisportionedoutinfivechapters,led offbyafewpagesofIntroduction.Thelittle volume,whichextendstonomorethan eighty-oneoctavopages,hasbeenpublisher' atthesuggestionofsomemembersofthe Grattan'MonumentCommittee,inthehope, notunreasonablyentertainedbythem,that itwillhelptopromoteandpopularizethe knowledgeofthepublicastothegreatand importantsubjecttowhichitrefers.The openingchaptercoversaperiodofthirty years(from1746to1775-exactlyacentury ago),relatingtotheearlylifeoftheillustriousoratorandpatriot.Sevenyearsof extraordinaryinterest(beginningwith1775, andendingwith1782)furnishmaterialsfor thesecondchapter,inrelationtoGrattan's famousstrugglefori.ommercialFreedom andNationalIndependence.ChapterThree asetapartfortheconsiderationofthe memorablefifteenyears(from:782to1797), withinwhichhenryGrattancarriedonhis gloriouslaboursfortheeffectingofParliamentaryReform,andforaccomplishing(if itonlyhadbeenpracticableatthattime!) Nodoughtierasserterofthepoliticalr,glits antiprivilegesofhisfellow-countrymen,of allcreedsandofallclasses,everraisedhis (iceintheLegislature.Hisgtnits,asMr. MacCarthywallsays,shed[14re-alustre thatisimin,ti,halde----otttheannalsofIreliold. liewasresple conspieweisamong thosewho,toronegloriousinterval,gave lrelandarecognizedp;ace;tmingthenations ofChristendom epopularknowledgein hisregale],however,isveryvague,confused, andfratmientary.Hislastbiographer,whose admirablestudyofhiscareerandcharacter isnowinourhands,saysfrankly,atstarting, thatwhilehecouldreadilyenough withinthoselasttwentyyears, have spoken at almost any lengthuponGrattan'slaboursandhis achievements,whenhecametoexaminemore closelythanhehadhithertodonethematerialsathiscommandinrelationtothe particularsofI;rattan'alife,asaffordinga cluetohischaracter,hewasstartledtofind that,inhismind'seye,hehadnoclear portraitoftheman.Consultingothers,he foundthatthey,too,wereinpreciselythe samepredicament.Theycouldtalkglibly enoughaboutGrattan,butofthemanhimselftheyprovedtoknownexttonothing. Lookingelsewherefortheinformationhewas insearchof,turningtoliterature,inthehope ofdiseovering,hereandthere,asidelight, liecoulddetectanythingofthatkindonlyat therarestintervals.Anadmirablepaper aboutGrattanwasreadytohandinMr. Lecky's"LeathersofPublicOpinion."Excellentthoughitisinitself,thisisratheran essay,however,upon,thanaportraitureof, Grattan.Asolidandmasterlyargument thereis,again,inMr.O'NeillDaunt'slecture. Butitmakesnopretencewhetherofbeinga distinct,personal,orbiographicaldelineation. Baffledsofarinhisresearchesastofacts, anddates,andincidents,Mr.MacCarthywas driventotheapparentlyDryasdusttoilof rummaging.Heransackedforhimself,and gototherstoransackforhimtiredustiest shelvesofadozenlibrariesinCork,and Dublin,andLondon.Iledevouredscores uponscoresofbooksthathadbeenlongout ofprint,andthathadforyearsslippedoutof recollection.IlesoughttracesofGrattanin allkindsofcontemporaryperiodicals,bigand little,inthedullestanddriestoldParliamentaryReportsandofeverydescription withinhisreachatthemoment,ofold memoirs,oldmagazines,andoldnewspapers. That,eventually,astheresultofallthese labors,hehadhisreward,thehooknow undernoticebearswitnessforhim. wemustperforce,reluctantly,bringittoa conclusion.Itwasin1805,theyearofPitt's deathandofNelson'satTrafalgar,that HenryGrattantookhisseatintheImperial Parliament.There,ashehaddowninthe IrishParliament,hesucceededtoamiracle. HisfirstaddresswasspokenofintheAnnual Registerasuneofthemostbrilliantspeeches everheardwithinthewallsofParliament. l'ittandFoxviedwitheachotherincheers andcongratulations.Byron,Rogers,and Campbell,whowerelisteningtoitinthe gallery,wereenthusiasticintheiradmiration. Itwasonthe6thofJune1820,teathe breatliedhislastinLondon.hisremainsbeing interrednearthoseofPittandFoxinWestminsterAbbey.Threeorfourgreatobjects ofhislife,asMr.MacCarthyremarkssignificantly,arenowthelawoftheland-Free Trade,ParliamentaryReform,andCatholic Emancipation.Meaningthatthefourthis notyetaccomplished-theRepealofthe Union.Ourclosingwordsshallbethoseof LordMahon,recentlydeceasedastheEarlof Stanhope,who,inspeakingofGrattansaid, emphatically;-"Ileloved.withallhis heart,thewholeofIreland,notmerely.one ofitsparties,oroneofitscreeds."
