BeforetheconcertcommencedhisEminencespokeasfollows."DearChildrenin JesusChrist,-Iamnotgoingtomakea speech,excepttocallonyoutosingGod BlessthePope.'AndbeforedoingthatI knowyouwillbegladtoknowthatthe Popeisverywell.Wehearfromthenewspapersalltheyearroundthatheisveryill butthenextday,aftermakingsuchannouncement,theyhavetosay.Weweremistaken. ThePopegavehisaudienceasusual.'The otherdayourHolyFathersaidsomethingso verygoodthatIcannothelprepeatingit. WRECKOFTHESTRATHMORE.

TheSierraMorenaputinhere,andlanded 12passengersandeightofthecrew,partof thesurvivorsoftheStrathmore,ofDundee, newironshipof1,872tonsonherfirstvoyagefromLondontoNewZealand,wrecked inJuly,1875,ononeoftheCrozetIslands intheSouthernOcean.Theabove,and24 others,weretakenofftheislandsonthe22nd January,bytheAmericanwhaler,Young Phenix,inawretchedcondition.Onthe 26thofJanuary,thePhcenixfellinwiththe SierraMorena,andtransferredthe20landed to-day.Owingtothescarcityofwaterthe SierraMorenacouldnottakemore.The factsofthewreckandoftherescueareas follows:-TheStrathmore,anewship,one ofthefinesteverlaunchedinEngland,sailed aboutAprillastwithemigrantsforOtago, NewZealand.Eighty-eightsoulswereon boardandshehadneverbeenhearlofuntil thesurvivingpassengerswerelandedhere. TheStrathmore,whenout75days,ranon therocksatnight,onagroupknownasthe TwelveApostlesintheCrozetGroup.About 44personsweredrowned.Theremaining44 livedsevenmonthsonthisbarrenisland, whichfortunatelyhadonegoodspringonits summit.Theylivedonseabirdsandtheir eggs.Severalvesselscamenearthemduring thesevenmonths,butthewreckedpeople failedtoattracttheirattention.Whensaved bytheAmericanwhalertheywereinadestituteandemaciatedcondition,andscarcely hadaragonthem.TheSierraMorena, whichtookhalfofthesavedfromtheAmericanvessel,arrivedhereto-day,boundto Kurrachee,withrailwaymaterial.According tothelastaccounts,24morewereonthe whaler.ThesecondmateoftheStrathmore andthecaptainofthevesselthatrescued themcameashorefirst.Theystatethat49 peopleweresaved.Twodiedontheisland fromhavingbeenfrost-bitteninthefeet,and theirtoesrottingoffwithmortification.The captainandchiefofficerweredrowned.Those savedlivedforsixmouthsand21dayson seabirdsandakindofweedlikethetopof acarrot,growingontheisland.Theisland isoneandahalfmileslong.Halfofitis perfectlybarerock,theotherhalfcovered

withrankgrass.Theirfuelforcookingwas thefeatherscfthebirds.Afewmatches weresaved,andtheykeptalampburning withoilextractedfromthebirds.Hardly anythingwassavedfromthewreck.The boatstheyescapedinwerelostthefirstnight, therocksbeingperpendicular,andnobeach toheavethemupon.Thefollowingisalist ofthesavedonboardtheSierraMorena:B.Peters,secondmateJ.C.Allen,third mate;G.Buttenshaw,firststewardD. ThefollowingfromtheTimesofIndiais thenarrativeofGeorge1).Cronibieoneof thesurvivorsoftheStrathmoretakenonthe dayoflandingof20survivorsatGalle, Ceylon,24othershavinggoneonto Mauritius:-"Wesailedon17thApril,1875 fromLondonforNewZealand.Allwentwell uptoJulyI.The30thJunewasfoggy,and thecaptainhadsaidwewereneartheCrozet Islands,andwouldpasssouthwardofthem, HeexpectedreachingNewZealandatthe endofJuly.Ataquarterto4a.m.onthe 1stJulyIfelttheshipstrike.Shehad bumpedonarockononeside,andsailedin betweentwoothers,andtheregotnedged. Sheswungbyherforepart,hersternleaning backsubmergedindeepwater. 1madefor theport-quarterboatwithmycabincompanion,Bentley,butcouldotgetitoffthe davits,asaseabrokeoverus,andwashedus backtothehandrailoffthepoop.Allfrom thepoopforwardswasrapidlygettingunder watertothemidships.Itwasfoggyand dark.AsIhurriedondeckIheardthe captaincallouttothepassengersinthe saloonGood-byetoall,itisalloversave yourselvesbytheboatsatonce,'Iwas dressedinmycoat,trousers,andboots.To savemyselfIgotfronttherailofthepoopto themizzenrigging,makingnofurthereffort togetattheboat.Iremainedint`t_erigging tilldaybreak.BythatOne,twoanda halfhourstheStrathmorehadgoneunder waterallexcepttheforecastle-head.On daylightcomingIgotalongthemizzentopgallantstaytothemainmast,andfromthere downtotheroofofthedeckho.use.Several otherssoonscrambledtotimesameplace whileothersmadefortherigging.The secondmateandseveralofusgotthegig anddingyboatsoffthedeckhouse.We heardnothingmoreofthecaptainandfirst mate.Theyhadbeenwashedoverboard.and noonegaveanyorders.Ibelievedthatabout 25personswhomIsawwereallthesurvivors outof88souls.Welaunchedthegig,and nineofus(myselfnotone)gotoffinittowardssomerocks,whichwecouldseetoweringinthefrontofus.Onesugar-loafrock 70ft.high,lookedtobeonly50ftfrotnthe vessel.Thedingyboat,withthethirdmate thecarpenter,andanotherofthecrewanda passenger,thengotoff.Therushtothis boat,astotheother,keptmeout.Eleven ofusremainedontheforecastle,andone manwasvisibletousintherigging.We scramblednowfromthedeckhousetothe forecastle.Thesecondmate,inthegig,promisedtoreturnonfindingalandingplace. Wesoonlostsightofbothboats.Thegig returnedlateintheafternoon,andinstead oftakingusofftheforecastletookfive passengersfromthemizzen-topwhomwe hadnotuptothistimeseen.Withfour rowersthismadeupthegig'scomplement, andweagainwerelefttowaititsreturn. Wehadtowaitthewholenight,anightof cold,wet,misery,andterrortous,aswe fearedtheshipgoingdown,asshedidsome hoursafterwards.Someoneofusgotabag withafewbiscuitsoutoftheforecastle andthatwasallweate.Sometimeafter daybreakonthe2ndofJuly,thegigcame back,butthedingydidnotreturn.Thegig nowtook11ofusoff,muchover-cramming herselftodoso,severalofuslyingdownin thebottomoftheboat.Theseahadgot calmer.Wefoundalandingplaceabouta mileaway,andsouthofwhereourship struck.Thedingyhadfoundit,too,and landedherpassengerssafely.Ongetting intothegigwetooksomethingswithusout oftheforecastle,someblanketsandsailors clothing.Thatnightthe2ndJuly,theship disappearedaltogether,cantedoverandfell backwardintothedeepwater,Isuppose.We landedatagapintherocksandfoundourselvesinamostdesolate-lookingplace-rocks uponrocks,everywhereaseabird'shome, veryfewlevelplaces,andgrassandsome weedsgrowingabout.Therewereplenty ofyoungalbatrossesaboutwhichwecould atfirsteasilyknockdownwithastick. Theyhadthennofearofus,norhadany otheroftheseseabirds.Toourfurthersurprisewefoundthatthelifeboathadarrived attheislandbeforethegighadonitslast triplandeditspassengers.Nineteenmore ofnshadgotsafetherebythatmeans,so thatwiththoseourdingyandgighadadded, latterintwotrips,wemadeup49souls inall.Thelifeboat'snumberincludedone lady-Mrs.Wordsworth,anEdinburghlady whohadbeenlivingsometimeat Liverpool,awidowgoingoattoNew Zealandwithherson,alsohappilysaved withher.Thechiefmateandthreesaloon passengerswereamongstthosedrowned. ThesethreepassengerswereaMrs.Walker, Ibelieve,fromBirmingham,whosehusband andsonoftwoyearsoldweresavedaMiss Henderson,daughterofMr.Henderson engineer,Wellington,NewZealand,towhom shewasgoingwithherbrother,whowas savedandMr.PercyJoslen,ofMaidstone inKent,whowasgoingoutwithhisbrother; thelatterisoneofthesurvivors.Allthe second-clssspassengers,sixinnumber,were lost.Theirnames,Ibelieve,areMr.and Mrs.Keddell,ofNewZealand,whitherthey werereturningMr.andMrs.Nobell(so pronounced),alsoreturningtoNewZealand, totheWestCoastMr.SenneeleasIunderstood,ofLondon,andMr.Blair,anold gentlemanhailingfromsomewhereunknown tome.Thesemadeupaltogether,with20 ofthethird-classandeightofthecrew,a totalof39lost.Inthethird-classtherewas afamilyofI0namedGoodridgeandMr.Lewis, Mr.Silkandsister,Mr.DeggenandMr. Ridge,andsomeotherswhosenamesIdon't remember.Theywere,Isuppose,washed offthedeckwiththecaptainandthemate. Ithinkalsothestarboardquarterboathad beenfilledwillspassengersandafterwards upset,aswesawithanginginthatcondition onourgettingaway,anditwentdownwith theship.Noneescapedinit.Theotherof thetwolifeboatshaddriftedashoreempty. Wesawitontherocks.Thataccountsfor alltheship'sboats.Thenearestislandwas calledHoggIsland,sixmilesoff,butasall ourboatsgotwashedawayandlostnextday, wenevervisiteditnoranyoftimeothersuntil wewererescued.Thoseislandsareuninhabited.Theislandwewereonwasoneof 12rockscalledtheTwelveApostles,partof 26islandscalledtheCrozets,inlat.26deg. 158minIon.50deg.E.Welearn,thatmuch afterwardsfromthecaptainwhorescuedus. Beforethelossofourboatswesavedfrom thewreckfloatingabouttwobarrelsofgunpowder,onecaskofportwine,twocasesof rum,onecaseofbrandy,twocasesofgin, oneeaseofpreserves,onecaseofhoots,and eighttinsofsweets.Thesetinsafterwards madeourpots.Wealsosavedapassenger's box,whichsupplieduswithblankets,kmdyes, andspoons.Somedeckplanksandother piecesoftimberweresecured.Matches severalofushad,andthewoodmadefires untilallwasburntup,andthenweburntthe skinsofbirds,whichdidwell.Thetwofirst nightswehadnoshelter,butthethirdnight wehadriggedupalean-toagainstarockith stonesandturf,thatheldthewhole48for thatnight.Oneofus,aMr.GeorgeMiller, haddiedofexhaustionandshockofthe systemthefirstday.Weafterwardsrigged upothershelter,anddividedourselvesinto sixmesses,eachdoingitsowncooking.Sea birdsandtheireggsandboiledgrasswere oursolefood.Wefoundaspringofgood water,andthatwasourgreatgoodfortune inallourtroubles.Ournumberof48was reducedto47onthe18111Julybythedeath ofaMr.Stanbury,ayoungmanfromDover, whodiedoflockjaw,causedbyinjuryofhis foot.Onthe3rdSeptemberwealsolostMr. Henderson,whodiedofdysentery,aftera longillness.Onthe23rdNovemberwelost oneofthequartermasters,namedHusband, whosehandhadgothurtandhadmortified. OurlastlosswasonChristmasDay,when Mr.Walker'schilddied.Ournumberwas thusreducedto44,atwhichitremainedtill thearrivaloftheYoungPhoenixtoour rescueonthe21stJanuary.Wehadno doctoramongus.Theshiphadnone.Duringourwearystaywesightedfourvessels, butcouldgetnorecognitionofoursignals, someblanketsflyingalldayonthemastof thelifeboat.Onevesselcamewithintwo milesoftheislands,andmusthaveseen us,butsheeredofffromus.We hadapocketalmanacamongstus.The YoungPhcenix,ofNewBedford,wascruising roundtheislandforwhales.Shehoistedthe UnitedStatesensign,andsenttwoboatsto takeusoff,andwethusleft,andverygladly, asthebirdshadgrownveryshy,Ourlady passengersurvived,andwithhersonwasthe firsttoleavetheisland.TheYoungPhenix couldnottakeall44on,andthecaptain meetingtheSierraMorenaon26thJanuary, transhipped20ofus,myselfamongstthe number,tothatvessel.Shewasboundto Kurrachee,ontheEastIndiancoast,andhas patintoGalls,fearingshortnessofwaterand provisions.Thereare20ofuswaitingat Galle,andarefortunateingettingtothis Britishisland,aswearequitedestitute.We renderourthanksmostheartilytoCaptain GiffardofthePhcenix,andCaptainKennedy oftheSierraMorenafortheirassistanceand kindness,which,underProvidence,hasrestoredustocivilisationafteralltheworld musthavelongthoughtustobedead.The YoungPhcenixleftuswiththerestofthe survivors,24innumber,boundforMauritius onthe28thJanuary.Australasian,

Nowgranting,forthesakeofargument, thecorrectnessofthepremises-namely, that"therearethreeboys,sonsofliberalmindedRomanCatholics,attendingthe ChurchofEnglandHighSchool."what follows?ThereforeRomanCatholicscan havenoreasonableobjectiontoapurely secularschool?lentcompelledtodenounce thatdeductionasaviolationoftherulesof correctreasoning.Itbynomeansfollows thatbecausecertainpersonsmayforspecial reasonsapproveofaChurchofEngland schoolfortheirchildrentheywouldtherefore,approveofapurelysecularschool.If suchamodeofreasoningwerecorrect,all ChurchofEnglandpeoplewouldconsequentlybeinfavorofpurelysecularschools.

ThisisthefirstnonsequiturinMr.Steere's argument.Butthereisanother.Itdoes notfollow,that,becauseafewparentsmay befountswillingtosacrificetheirprinciples, allparentswouldbesatisfiedtodoso.This isthesecondnonsequiturinMr.Steere's argument.

Mr.Steereshouldknowthatitisnotper- mittedbytherulesofcorrectreasoningto drawageneralconclusionfromaparticular premise. Thus,ifIweretostate-therearesixhad meninPerththereforethemenofPerth arebad.Ishouldbedeservedlylaughedat formyillogicalreasoning. Duringthenighttheseabrokecompletely overthevesselandwashedawaythreeof theseamen,GregorioPavisich,Baldassare Vacassinovic,PaoloRadovich,Matteo,and theboyGrice.Atdaylightaboatwasgot clearandthemaster,thesecondmate,the midshipman,andaseamangotintoher.She capsizedinthebreakersandthemaster,the secondmate,andtheseamanwasdrowned themidshipmanclungtothekeelofthe boatandwaswashedashore.Thefirst mategotashoreonaladder,andtheremainderofthecrewonsparsandpiecesof thewreck.Forseveraldaystheparty,consistingoftenpersons,liveduponrawshellfishandwhateverinthewayofeatableswas washedashorefromthewreck.Theyhadlittle hopeofeverbeenrescuedandwereingreat dreadofthenatives,whomtheybelievedto becannibals.Aseverything,includingthe charts,hadbeenlost,theyhadnomeansof ascertainingonwhatpartofthecoastthey were,orinwhatdirectionlaythenearest settlement.Afterseveraldaysofgreat suffering,thenativescamedowntothe beach,andmuchtothesurpriseofthecastawaysailors,madeoverturesoffriendliness sinichaftersomehesitationonthepartofthe bipwreckedseamen,wasaccepted.The oativesshowedthemwherewatercouldhe btained,caughtfishandcookedthemfor them,andcompletelyrelievedthepartyofall fearontheiraccount.Amongthedebrisof thewreckwashedashore,thenativespicked upachartoftheWestCoastofAustralia,by whichthepartywereenabledtomakeout prettywellwheretheywere,antiafterconsultationitwasdeterminedtomakean attempttogettoShark'sBay.Theparty startedsouthwardsandaftersixdaystravellingreachedCapeCuvier.Findingnowater andbeingafraidtoproceed,theyreturn,'to thesceneofthewreckwhichtheyreachedin safety.Forsomesixweeksaftertheir returnthepartylivedonrockoystersand sufferedintenselyfromwantandexposure.
