Thepunishmentofthepilloryisabolished, bettherestofthesectionremainsinforce, andIrefertoitonlytoillustratethemeaningoftheVagrantAct.Itseemstomethat Actforbidssubstantiallythesamething "theproduceofoccultandcraftysciences," tousethewordsoftheActofGeorgeIV. ForthesereasonsIthinkthatifbythetrick IhavedescribedSladetriedtoimposeon I'rofessorLankesterandDr.Donkin,hecommittedanoffenceagainsttheVagrantAct.

AndthisbringsmetotiesecondquestionDidhedosoornot?-aquestionwhichlies inanarrowcompass.Muchtimehasbeen occupiedinitsdiscussion.Iwasunwilling toexcludeevidencetowhichthepartiesattachedimportance,andIaccordinglyadmittedagooddealwhich,whengiven,appeared tomeatthetime,andstillappearstome, irrelevant.Ontheonehand,Iattachno importancetotheevidenceofMr.Maskelyne, givenonthesummonsforconspiracy,because itproveswhatnoonecandoubt-namely, thatsomethingsdonebySlademightbe donebyanyconjuror.Ontheotherhand,I cannotattachimportancetotheevidenceof thewitnessesforthedefence,becausethey onlyprovethatonotheroccasionsstrangeifyouplease,verystrange-thingshappened inblade'spresence.andthattheydidnot perceivehecausedthem.Iforbear,however, tospeculateonthesematters,andconfine towhathappenedbetweenSlade,Lankester, andDon't".Thewholecaseturnsuponthe evidenceofthetwolastnamedpersons, which,inafewwords,istotheeffectthat theysawSlade'shandmovedasifhewas writing,andthatonsnatchingtheslatefrom himimmediatelyafterwards,andbeforeit wasplacedinthepositioninwhichthe spiritsweretowrite,andwithoutanysound asifofwriting,theyfoundwordswritten uponit.isthisbetrue,itinvolvestheinferencethatSladewrotethewordshimself. andthatthereforehecouldnotthinkthe spiritofhiswifehadwrittenthem.Imust decideaccordingtothewell-knowncourse ofnature.andifit shotthetwowitnessessawti:;,motionsthattheydescribe, andfeeouthewritingontheslateimme'Latelyafterwards,itisimpossibleformeto doubt,whateverhappenedonotheroccasions,Sladedidontliatoccasionwritethose wordsonthatslateinordertocheatProfessorLankesterandDr.Donkin.Itistrue thatSimmondssaidtherewasnothingtopay, asLankesterandDonkinwerenotsatisfied, butthequestioniswhethersubtlecraft, means,ordevicewereusedtoimposeonthese gentlemen.anditclearlywas,asthemoney wouldhavebeenpaidifthetrickhadnot beendiscovered.Uponthewhole.Ithink anoffenceagainsttheVagrancyActhasbees proved,andconsideringthegreatmischiefs

likelytoresultfromsuchpractices-misehiefs whichthosewhorememberthecaseofHome, alsoaprofessionalmedium,cannotconsider unsubstantial-IfeelIcannotmitigatethe punishmentthelawimposes,and,therefore, Isentencethedefendanttothreecalendar months'imprisonmentintheHouseofcorrection,withhardlabor.

Itisnowbeyondadoubtthatanarmistice hasbeenconcededbythePorteinaccordance withtheRussiandemands.andthat,thepreviousassentofServiahavingbeendeclared, hostilitieswil-1atonceceaseateverypoint. Thelatestincidenthashadastartingcharacter.WhileGeneralIgnatieffwasexchangingideaswithAmbassadors,indicating hisdemandsupontheI'orteantipreparing forasolemninterviewwiththeSultan,the TurkishMinisterofWarwasurgingthe CommanderoftheSultan'stroopstostrikea rapidantidecisiveblow.Hewasobeyed. TheTurkishforceshadrecentlybeenreinforcedbyseveralthousandmentheGeneral hadthemeansofapromptadvance,antiwe maysupposethathehardlyneededtobe toldtheimportanceofit.TheTurks attackedandgainedthegreatsuccesswhich madethem,inamilitarysense,mastersof Servia.TheworksatDjuniswerecaptured asaconsequence,Alexinatzhasfalleninto thehandsoftheTurksandto-claythere comesareportoftheoccupationofDeligisei. TheTurk,however,withallhiscourageand subtlety,cannotgainanygreatadvantage overtheformidablechampionwhostands behindtheServians.TheRussianGovernmentissuddenlyrousedbytheimminent dangerwhichthreatensitsfriends,thecry forhelpcotnesfromBelgrade.theServian Militiaisdetnoralized,theRussianvolunteers arecuttopiecesthecareeroftheTurks mustbestoppedinstantlyatallcosts.'The CzarwouldhavebutonecourseiftheTurks weretooccupyaszonquerorsthecountry whichRussianinstigationshadexposedto warthehonourofhisGovernmentwould demandanintervention,andthiswould equallybecalledforbytheclamoursofhis people.HencetheUltimatumwhichstartled theworldtwodaysago.Thenegotiations aboutthearmisticewerelookeduponasconcludedthepointsweresettled,andthe formalsignaturewastobegiveninafew hours.Yet,astheinstrumenthadnotbeen actuallyexecuted,andasitwasjustpossible thattheTurkishMinistersmightfindan excusefordeferringtheactuntilanotherand amoredeadlyblowwasstruck,theCourtat Livadiatookitssuddenresolution.

Thecrisiswasoneofrealdanger,forthe Portemightbestronglytemptedtoresist suchademandatsuchanhour.TheRussianUltimatumwasimperiousinsubstance aswellasform,anditcameatatimewhen theTurksmightbenaturallyelatedbythe successoftheirarms,andconsiderthatit wasforthemtodictateandnottoreceive terms.litgoodsenseandajustviewof theirsituationseemtohaveprevailed.This UltimatumfromthePowerwhichstands darkandmysteriousbehindtheSlavinsurrectionmaybeoffensivetoavictoriousState, butitinvitestheconsiderationofaState whichknowsthatsuccessmayonlybring newperils.Iftherebeanygroundforthe RussianAmbassador'scomplaintofTurkish procrastinationandofanintentiontodefeat theobjectofthePowers,theTurksmustsee thatthispolicymustsooncometoandend. If,onthecontrary,theyhadalreadyconcededthesubstanceofwhatRussiademanded,andiftheUltimatumWasintended rathertoallayRussianfanaticismthanto gainanyrealadvantagefrontthePorte,then theacceptanceofthenewRussianArmistice willmakenopracticaldifferenceinthe courseofevents.

DISCOURSEOFTHEHOLYFATHERTOTHE PILGRIMSOFNANTES.

Ifitistrue,asitcannotbedoubted,that unionandconcordrenderpeoplesvaliant, andfurnishthemwithstrengthandvigorto resist,nutonlytheunjustattacksofthe commonenemies,buttorepulseandgaina victoryoverthemitislikewisemosttrue thatthesemanymillionsofCatholicChristianswhofightunderthebannerofJesus Christ,whiletheycontinuealwaysunited

andinconcordinthecombat,cannotbut gainthevictoryoverthemanyenemieswho persecutethem.

And,infact,thisgreatmovementofcontinuedpilgrimagesitselfgivesmeasecure indicationoftheunitywhichreignsamong thesonsofJesusChristandoftheCatholic Churchtheylikewisetendinconcordto unitestillcloserdifferentnationswithbonds ofcharity,therebytocombatwithgreater advantageheresy,unbelief,indifference,anti theperversewishofconciliatingChristwith Belial.You,then,whohavecometoveneratethetombofthePrinceoftheHoly Apostles,demonstratealsobythisactthe bondswhichuniteyouonetotheother,and uniteyouequallywithalltheotherpilgrims whohaveprecededyoufromallpartsofthe world.antiwiththeimmensemultitudeof theiradherents,becauseyoualldirectyour lookstowardsthiscentreofunity.

Inthiscase,also,thereisverifiedthe fulfillmentoftheDivinepreceptoflove,on whichwehavemeditatedintheGospelof lastSunday.JesusChristbeingasked whichwasthegreatestcommandment amongstallinthelaw,answeredthaton accountofdignity,ofefficacy,andofgreatness,thechiefcommandmentwastolove Godwithallone'sstrength,withallone's mind,withallone'sheartandthesecond, similartothefirst,toloveone'sneighbour asoneself.Inthefirstcommandmentthere arenolimits,norcantherebedangerof exaggerationsandthisisclearandevident sinceonecannevergotoexcessinloviug God,theSovereignGood,Inthesecond, then,wewillalwayshesureoflovingaccordingtotheDivineprecept,ifinourneighbour weregardtheimageofGod.Now,the fulfillmentofthisdoublepreceptisthat whichconstitutesconcordandpeaceinthe world,andtheycannotbefoundexceptin theCatholicreligion.

Infact,ifIshouldaskofallthosewho arenotwithus-heretics,Protestants, schismatics,unbelievers,andfive-thinkers,of allthesectswhichmakesomonstrousawar uponus,andofcertainill-advisedCatholics -if1shouldaskalltheseAreyouunited amongstyourselves? Alitheycouldonly answerthisonething:"Weareunited,but onlyinblaspheming,theCatholicChurch Weateunited,butonlyinhatingandpersecutingCatholicity."And,indeed,inother respects,thereisanewBabel,suchaconfusiouthatifthegreatauthorinwhom Francesodeservedlygloriesweretoreturn amongstus,hewhowrotethe"Historyof theVariations,"Isaythathewouldbeobligedtoaddothertomesstilltocomplete hiswork,asweseeitinourdays.

PraisebetoGod,then,thatsomany millionsofCatholicsinconcordandunion respectandturntothisHolySeeasthe centreofunity.Sopersevering,thereisno doubtbutthatalltheenemiesoftheChurch inFrance,inItaly,inGermany,andin America,willbediscomfortedwiththe sightofsuchbeautifulconcordintheChurch ofJesusChrist.

WhentheyouthfulRehoboamsucceeded SolomonuponthethroneofJerusalem, hardlyhadheassumedthecrownuponhis head,thanthepeopleofthekingdom,asked certaingracesfromthenewKing,whobeforeansweringthemdesiredtotakecounsel fromtheeldersandfromtheyoungmen; andthecounselsofthefirstshouldthushave prevailed-Unfortunately,Rehoboamgave eartotheworstparty,andamidstthedisturbanceofopinionsatumulteasilyspring upamongstthepeople,whichafterwards ended,Godsodisposingit,intheloss ofthegreaterportionofthekingdomby Rehoboam.

Thequidnuneshavehadagenuinetreat thisweekindiscussingtheastoundingfact, thatapartyofhighRussianofficialsandexpertshavebeenallowedtofamiliarizethemselvesatthisparticular juncturewithallthatisgoingonin PortsmouthDockyard.CaptainSelivanoff, chiefofthegunnerydepartmentatSt. Petersburg,hasbeenforsomedaystaking notesofthegundrilloftheMarineArtillery, andofthesystemofinstructiononboard theExcellent,andatEastney.Afewdays

OnTuesdayweekthequadrennialpresidentalelectionwasheldthroughoutthe UnitedStates.Theinterestsatstakeinthis instanceareimmense,involving,astheydo, theselfgovernmentoftheentireSouthas wellasthequestionofStaterights,which hasbeenfoughtovertheseeighteenyears withouthavingevergotaninchnearerits definitesettlement.Yet,strangetosay, althoughmorethanaweekhadelapsedsince thedayoftheelectiontheresultisasyet unknown,oratleastdoubtful.Thereturns fromthirty-fouroutofthirty-sevenStates areascertained,showingamajorityof eighteeninfavourofTilden,theDemocratic candidate,overhisRepublicanrival,Hayes; theformerhavingreceivedanaggregatevote of184,andthelatterof166.Thescales nowturnonthethreesouthernStatesof SouthCarolina,Louisiana,andFlorida.If oneoftheseStatesgoesinfavourofTilden hiselectionissecuredwhereas,Hayesmust havethemallthreetomakegoodIrisreturn byamajorityofone.BothinSouthCarolina andLouisiarathevotehasbeenadulterated byRepublicanreturningboards,anditis perfectlypossiblethattirereturnsinboth StateswillbefavourabletoHayes,although thevastmajorityofthepeopleareDemocrats. BetterhopesareentertainedofFloridabut, atallevents,thefinalresultwillnot,be knownforquiteanotherweek.

VEXEDPROTESTANTQUESTION.

Thepastfortnighthasbeen,comparatively speaking,afavourableoneintheinterestof theChurchinFrance.OrsSundayweekM. deMerode,amanwhoseverynamehasa goodCatholicringaboutit,waselected senatorfortheDoubsdepartmenttosucceed athoroughgoingRadical.OnFridayweek theSenatewascalledupontoelecttwolife senatorsintheplaceofGeneralValazeand M.Wolowaki,deceased,bothofwhomhad beenRadicals.Thecontestwaslongand severe,andintheendM:IlenouardandM. ChesnelongwerereturneditheformeraRepublican,thelatterag Catholicand Legitimist.BythismeanstheCatholic partyintheSenatehasgainedtwoseats, whichistantamounttofourvotesata divisionandasthetwopartiesraneach otherveryclosebefore,itmaynowhetaken forgrantedthatatanyimportantdivision, moreespeciallyofareligiousnature,the SenatewillvoteinafirmCatholictone.In theChamberofDeputiestheestimatesofthe publicworshipdepartment beendiscussedthisweek.Itwasproposedbythe ultra-Radicalsthattheseestimatesshouldbe struckcleanoff,thisbeingoneofthestrings onwhichthesegoodpeoplehavebeenharpingformanyalongday.PrinceNapoleon madeaspeechrepletewiththevilestabuse oftheChurch,butwassettorightsbyM. Keilee,theAlsatianchampionoftheCatholic cause.Intheendthemotionwaslost11 443against62,M.Gambettabeingonthe sensibleside.

Thecentreofcivilizationstandsinno particularlyenviablepositionjustnow. WhenthecapitalofProtestantEnglandhas fivemurdercasesatonetimependingin herpolicecourts,howmustitbewithless favouredandless"enlightened"communities7 Itisso,nevertheless.Thereare atthepresentmomentasmanyasfive murdersincourseofinvestigationinLondon alone,coupledwiththeusualdailynumber ofcasesofbrutality,ofviolence,andofother crimesofacharacterthatcouldnothear evenmentioninourcolumns.Andyetwe unblushinglyholdourselvesupbeforethe worldasmodelsofcivilization.

Hitherto,theMuscoviteExchequerhas borrowedimpartiallyfromanynationsor individualsthatwouldlend.Ithasraised moneyinEngland,Holland,Franceand Germany,undervariousformsofsecurity andguarantee.Atrustworthyestimateof thetotaldebtofRussiashowsthatthe fundedloansandfloatingliabilities,thenote currency,andtherailwayguarantees amounttoquite£360,000,000.Ofthis enormoussumtheinterest-bearingportion representeduntiltheotherdayL'280,000,000, theannualchargeforwhich,accordingto theestimateintheBudgetfor1875,was £15,273,000.Tothisprincipalwehavenow toadd£12,000,000more,andtothecharge £600,000inroundnumbers,bringingtheinterest-bearingdebttocloseupon£300,000,000, andtheannualchargetoalmost£16,1)00,000. Nodoubtalargeportionofthisisnot nationaldebtinexactlythesamesensethat ourConsolsorFrenchRentesare,since fully£90,000,000representguaranteeson loantorailways,forwhichtheStateholds bondsandsharesofarealisablevalue,while theannualliabilitymaybeexpectedtobe coveredinduetimebytherevenuesof thoserailways.Butwearetreatingof Russiaasshestandsnow,hurryingonwarlikepreparationsevenatthecostoffresh debt,andbythesamestepthrowingback hermaterialdevelopment,andinjuringthe wholeofhertrade.Russiakeepingthe peacemayinafewyearsfreeherselffrom therailwayobligationsbutRussiaatwar, orthoughttobecontemplatinghostilities, retardsallherindustries,embarrassesher financialinstitutions,andstarvesherrailways,whichthuswouldconstituteaheavy burden.

PROTESTANTMISSIONSINITALY.

TheSpanishCorteshadtheirsayonthe vexedProtestantquestion.Saturdayat Madridiseitheraholidaynoryethalfa holidaywiththelaw-makers,but,onthe contrary,everymortalhobbyandcrotchetis broughtonthetaps,somewhatafterthe fashioninwhichitisdoneatSt.Stephen's onWednesdays.Now,lastSundaySenor Alvareda,oneofthefewanti-dynastiesthat havebeenallowedtocreepintotheHouse, hauledtheministryoverthecoalsonaccount oftheirreligionspolicy,tryingtomakeout thatalltheemissariesofExeterHallought tobeallowedtohaveitasmuchtheirown wayinSpainasinUlster.Hebroughtforwardan"interpellation"ontiresubject, whichissimplywhatwecallaquestion,and SenorCanovasdelCastillorepliedthathe haddonehisduty,andmeanttononeither morenorlessinthematter.Thereuponold Sagasta,Serrano'slastprimeminister,who hasbeenoutinthecoldeversincelast Januarytwelvemonth,movedthatthe governmenthadnotproperlyinterpreted the1ItLclauseoftheconstitution.The motionwassustainedbyalltheweightof SenorAlonsoMartinez,theleadinglawyer ofthecountry,hutlostatadivisionby183 to60,theminoritybeingthistimethe largestthathadyetbeenbroughttogether againsttheministry.

Whattemperance,cleanliness,andregularitycandointhewayofrestoringand preservinghealthisdemonstratedinare markahlemannerbythereportofthedirectorsofconvictprisonsforthepastyear. Whowouldimagineit?Aconvictprison isthewholesomestplacetolivein.Ifyou wanttohaveyourhealththoroughlyrestored youhaveonlygottodosomethingwhich willgiveamagistrateanexcuseforsending youtoaconvictprison.Thisisanextraordinaryallegation,butitseemstobefounded uponfact.Justreadwhatthemedical officerofMillbankPrisonreports:Onlookingthroughtheannualmedical statisticsoftheseprisonsforthetwenty years,1855-74,Ifindthatonlyeightdeaths areascribedtoentericfever,or94per annuminpopulation,maleandfemale, averaging7913.Duringthefireyears187074onlytwodeathswerecausedbythis diseaseinanaveragepopulationof9509.If thesanitarysecuritiesenjoyedbytheinmates oftheconvictprisonscouldbeextendedto thegeneralpopulationofthecountrymany thousandsofliveswouldeveryyearbe saved. Allperfectlytrue,nodoubt;andbetter still,byproperattentiontosanitationand thestrictobservanceoftemperanceand regularityofliving,thewholeofthemetropolismightbemadeequallyhealthy.

TheEasternQuestionisnowentirelyin thehandsofthediplomatists.LordSelig-

HisEminenceCardinalJohnSimeoniis nowapproachinghissixtiethyear,having beenborninDecember,1816.Hisfamilyis anoldone,andhighlyhonorable.Earlyin lifehereceivedanappointmentintheoffice ofthePapalSecretaryofState,anddisplayelsuchaptitudeforStateaffairsthat, abouttwentyyearsago,hewaschosenby theSovereignPontiffforthepostofCharge d'AffairesattheCourtofSpain.Hewas soonafterentrustedwithamissionofa purelyreligiouscharactertoAustria,where hefulfilledthedutiesimposeduponhim withgreattactandability.Onhisreturn fromAustriahewasselectedforthesecretary-shipofaffairsconnectedwiththeEasternChurchintheCongregationofthePropaganda,andwassoonafterwardsmade Secretary-GeneralofthesameCongregation, anofficewhichisasureforerunnerofelevationtotheSacredCollege,Monsignor Simeonibeingthusmarkedoutforearly membership.AtthedesireofthePope, however,heresignedthisofficetoundertake thedelicatetaskofarrangingmattersin SpainbetweentheHolySeeandAlphonsus XII.ontheaccessionofthelattertothe Spanishthrone.Ilewaseminentlysuccessfulinhismanagementofthedifficultand complicatednegotiations,andleftinMadrid en t,

CARDINALANTONSLLI'SWILL. CardinalAntonellf'swillscattersatonce andforever,bytherecordofafewvery simplefacts,amonstrousdelusion.The exactstatementsthereputforthastothe worldlypossessionsofhisEminence,andas tothewayinwhichhedesiredthosepossessiontobedistributedafterhisdemise,even theToneswentoutofitswayatonce,on Thursday,franklytoacknowledgewas markedthroughoutbyasimplicityanda directnessfromwhichalessonmightwellbe learntbyourownlawyers.Thislastwill andtestamentmay,indeed,servetodomore thansimplysoften,,theprejudicesacknowledgedbyourcontemporarytohavebeen previouslyinexistenceinregardtothe illustriousdecease.Itscatters,uponthe instant,asthewildestofabsurdities,the malignantrumourssetafloatbynon-Catholic journalistsofthesecretamassingofwealth bythelateCardinalAntonolli.Thedocument,infact,provestodemonstrationthat theCardinal'spossessionsconsistedentirely ofthemoderatecompetencewhichhehad inhereted,andwhichduringhisenjoyment ofit,hehadhimselfdealtwithprudently. Consciousofthecalumnieswhichwere alreadyafloatwhenhewaswritinghiswill, nearlysixyearsago,intheJanuaryof1871, astohisaccumulationofcountlesstreasures, andaware,also,that,inallhumanprobability,thoselayingimputationswouldbereviveciandintestifiedatthetimeofhis dissolution,CardinalAntonelli,inthecourse ofhiswill,aserred:thussolemnly-"Ideclare Idonotpossessanyothercapitalbeyondthat whichcamefromtheheritageofmyexcellent father,orwhichIhavebeenabletoacquire throughthesamemeansleftmebyhim." FURYOFTHEREVOLUTIONARYJOURNALISTS OFPARIS.

Underthetitleof"TroistinesIscooper" appearsintherevolution,thejournalofM. Naquet,thefollowingpassage:-'Itisnot eithertheheadofPiusIX.,northatofAbdul Bailin',ofWilliam,noreventhatofShylockwhichwedemandthosewhichmust, becutoff,andthaturgently,aretheheads ofRoyalty,oftheClergy,andofCapital. Solongasthosethreeheadsarenotlaidlow thepeople-thatistosaynine-tenthsof humanity-mustrenouncethebenefitsof scienceandcivilization,ofpeace,liberty, equality,well-being,eventherighttolive, andinawordtherealRepublic.whichis oneinthingsandnotinmerewords."tin theabovetheUniversremarks:-"Thisis anexampleoftheabominableincitements withwhichtherevolutionaryorgansare dailyfilledandyetwearetoldthatwe haveaMinistryofJusticandalawtocurb theexcessesofthePress."

Astrangefatalityseemstohangoverthe so-calledOldCatholicsofGermany.The manwhorulesoverthishandfulofrenegades scatteredalloverGermanywantstoapethe bishopsofCatholicdioceses,andtodosohe requiresacrozier,amitreandvariousother costlyarticlesforwhichthel'russianGovernment,fromwhomhereceiveshissalary, havemadehimnoallowance.Toprovide fortheseasubscriptionwasrecentlyopened insomepartsofRhineland,andinthemeantimeacrozierworthabout£100orderedofa l'arisjeweller.Induetimethearticlewas finished,butthemakerwouldnotpartwith itotherwisethanfor"paymentondelivery;" andsosmallhadbeentheproceedsofthe subscriptionthathisdemandscouldnotbe satisfiedbyhalf.Sothejewellerkepthis handiworkforsometime,untilhegotinto difficultieswhenhethoughtitbesttopawn theshepherd's staff forwhich nosolventshepherdcouldbefound. TheDeutscheIleichszcitung,fromwhichwe extracttheaboveinformation,tells usthatthisisthefirsttimeany episcopalinsigniahavefoundtheirwayto theParisMontde-pitta.Atalleventsit showsthatOldCatholicismmustbeina verybadwayindeedifitsbishophastogo toapawnsouptofetchhiscrozier.

THEPOLITICALSITUATION.

WHILEinmostotherpartsoftheworld politicalpowerisfallingmoreandmore intothehandsofthepeople,itseemsto beherefallingeverydaymoreintothe handsofakw.Webeganwitha governmentwhichwitsabsolute,we thenwadeastepunderthetutelageof

GovernorWeldinthedirectionofa popularandresponsibleformofgovernment,gothalfwaytowardsitand stopped,andhaveendedwithgetting agovernmentwhichrepresentsthe countrygentlemen,thewoolfactors,and thebanks.Inacountrylikethiswhere almosteveryfifthmanisanofficialof somesortandwhereeverybody-no matterwhathisrankoroccupationmayhopeforagovernmentappointment andthehonorofbeingpresentedat Court,"palace"influenceisimmense. Whatthegovernorthinksandsays, thosewhoarewithinreachofhimecho. Thus,whenGovernorWeld,reluctantly forcedintotheacknowledgementthat thecolonycouldnotmakeanysatisfactoryprogressuntilithadagovernmentinwhichtheministrywasresponsibleandthemembersoftheLegislaturewereelectedinsuchawayasto reallyrepresentthecountry,thosewho thoughtwithhimfeltencouragedtogo inandwin,whiletheywhowouldhave preferredseeingthingsremainasthey wereofferedlittleornoopposition. ThuswhentheministerofthedayMr.BARLEE-amanthoroughlymaster ofthesituation-broughtforwarda measureforresponsiblegovernment whichwouldhavecausedthecountry tobefairlyrepresentedandenabledits representativestocarryoutapolicyof progress,itseemedasifeveryoneconcurred.Nodoubt,themajorityofthe membersofcouncilwerehonestlyof opinionthatthemeasurewasdesirable. Theyweresosickoftheunsatisfactory natureoftheirpositionundertheexistingconstitutionthattheywereonly toogladofanychangethatpromisedto makethingsbetter.Theyweremoreovermanyofthemsmartingunderthe ruleoftheColonialSecretary.That ministertreatedthemverymuchasif theywerechildren.Whenhewanted themtobegoodanddosomething pleasantlyandwithoutmakinganoise, hewouldcoaxorbribethem;atother times,whenhedidnotcarewhether theymadeanoiseornot,hewouldoutgeneralthemorforcethemintosubmission,whilehewouldoccasionally soundlychastisethem.Tosome amongthemthiswasextremelydistasteful.Sodistastefulwasitthat, althoughtheirprejudicesifnottheir interestspointedtheotherway,they gladlyentertainedtheideaofamore popularformofgovernment,ifonlyasa meansofdeliverancefromtheirimperioustaskmaster,Astheministerof agovernmentsoabsoluteinitscharacter astheoneherepresented,Mr.BARLEE wasfelttobeirresistible.Tooppose suchamaninsuchapositionwasonly toinvitedefeatandhumiliation.Ina governmentwhichwasbothrepresentativeandresponsible,itwouldbe necessaryforhimtobeat leastconciliating,whiletherewouldbe achanceofdethroninghimandoccupyingtheseatofpowerfromwhichhe wascastdown.Nooneperhapsfelt thismorethantheleaderoftheelected members.Butsomehow,atthevery momenttheopportunityforwhich heandhispartyhadsolongedwas withintheirgrasp,amisgivingseemsto havecomeacrossthemthattherewas somethingwrong.Therewasonetoo manyintheboatTheministerwho wastobedethroned-amanwhoknew wellwhathewasabout-wastheretoo, actingaspilotandsteersman.What elsecouldbeinferredbutthatthe changetowhichthecountrywasabout tobecommittedmightcutbothways? Immediately,theybecamealarmed,and underthepleaoftakingsomepreliminarystepswhichhadbeenneglected,at anunfortunatemomenttheyobtaineda temporarydelay.Alreadytheactfor thenewconstitutionwassafe,whenMr. STEEREbyraisinganobjectionofa technicalnatureinducedGovernorWeld -alwaysascrupulousstatesman-to putoffthebillforanothersession. Theopportunity,thuslost,never occurredagain.Whenthemeasure cameonforfinaldecision,Mr.WELD'S administrationhadpassedaway,some ofthemoreimportantsupportersofthe billfoundtheirhandstied,anditwas allowedtofallthrough.Thehem. memberwhohadchargeofit,though makingashowofsupportingitand possiblybelievingthathewasinearliest, hadnotthesameincentiveforpushing

SOMEmonthsagoweadvocatedinan earnestleadertheestablishmentof YoungMen'sSocietiesinFremantle andYork.Circumstancesbroughtthe advantagesaccruingtotheYoungMert ofPerthfromtheassociationexisting amongthemprominentlybeforeus,and wecouldnotfailtobesensibleofavery strongdesiretoseesimilaradvantages sharedinbytheCatholicyouthofthe townswehavementioned.Wearenot vainenoughtoattributeanyextraordinaryinfluencetoourwordsin bringingabouttheresultwedesired, Theym.yhavehelpedmuch,theymay havehelpedlittle.Theobjectwehad inviewisgained.Sincewepennedour words,societieshavebeeninstitutedboth inYorkandinFremantle,andthatthe facthasbeenaccomplishedissufficient forourpresentpurpose.

Allthreesocieties,itispleasingto know,areinassatisfactoryacondition astheirmostenthusiasticadmirerseoukl reasonablyanticipate.Tworeports havebeenhandedtousforpublication andtheyappearaccordinglyinanother partofourcolumns.Oneisfromthe PerthSociety,andchroniclesthedoings ofthePerthCatholicYoungMenfor thepastsixmonths.Theotheristhe firstannualreportoftheFremantle association.Inbothdocumentswehave anaccountofworkdone,creditable alikebyitsvarietyandextent,and crownedbysuccess,theusualattendant oftheenergywhichisjoinedwithcommonsenseBothexhibitahealthy stateoffinances,thefundsbeingsufficienttomeetallexpensesandleavea balancetothegoodnotwithstanding. Bothfinallyrevealtousontheveryimportantpointofnumbetof'members,a lengthofroll,whichissurprising,consideringthelimitedextentofCatholic populationinthetwolocalities.This lastfactappearstousworthyofspecial consideration.Toourwayofthinking nothingsoprovestheesteeminwhich aninstitutionisheld,asthedegreeto whichtheprivilegesofmembershipinit aresoughtbythosewhoareeveryday witnessesofitscareerandwhoaro thereforebestjudgesofthevalueofthe advantagesitisabletoafford. WehavebeenfurnishedwithnoreportfromtheYorkCatholicYoung Men'sSociety.Thedisappointmentis possiblyduetoanoversight;andwe maynotunreasonablyhopetohearsoon fromthecommittee,andbeenableto gratifyourownandourreaderswishes inournextissue.Thewantofan authoritativereportis,however,the lesstoberegrettedinthisinstance,as privatesourcesofinformationplaceus inapositiontospeakwithconfidence oftheconditionoftheassociation.The

MR.CHAMPNEY'Swhohasbeenaresident privatemedicalpractionerinYork,forsome twoyearspast,hasleftthecolonybythe Helena-Mena,forLondon.Mr.Champney's hadalargepractiseandwashighlyesteemed inthedistrict.TheYorkiteswillbeglad tolearnthatMr.Champney'spurposesatan earlydate,returningtothecolonyandagain residinginthedistrictinwhichhehassecuredforhimselfsomanyfriends.

THERegattawhichtookplaceinPerthon NewYear'sday,undertheauspicesofthe PerthYachtClub,wasconsideredsuccessful ineveryrespect.Thewetherwasintensely hot,yetcrowdsofpeoplewerespectatorsof theboatracing,andotheramusementsduringtheday.

THEreportofthefindingofthecourt appointedbythegovernmenttoinquireinto thelossofthesteamerGeorgette,hasbeen published.Thecertificatesofthemaster,J Godfrey,thefirst.mate,andalsoofthefirst andsecondengineerwereretainedbythe court.pendingthedecisionofHisExcellency theGovernor.

THEPerthCityCouncildoesnotseemto beinaveryprosperouscondition.Atthe meetingheldunthe5thJanuarylast,the monthlyaccountsshowedanoverdraftof £1788s.4d.Thewithdrawelofconvict laborwillseriouslyaffecttheprogressof worksinthecity.

TEEharvestreportsfromtheEastern Districtsarenotveryfavorable.Thewheat cropturnedoutverylightanditseemsthere willbeverylittlewheatbroughttothe Metropolis.Thebarleycropsaremuch morefavorable,andpricesinthecountry maybequotedfrom3s.3d.to3s.6d.per bushel;unlesstheyieldofcornhasbeen favorableintheChampionBayDistrict,we regrettosay,aconsiderablequantityofflour willhavetobeimportedduringthecurrent year.

THEfirstshowofStock,Agriculturalproduce,Sic.,undertheauspicesoftheMetropolitanAgriculturalSociety,tookplacein Perth,outhe10thand11thJanuarylast, andwaspronouncedacompletesuccess.A fullreportofthechewhasappearedinour contemporaries.Onthe10thinst.,adinner tookplaceintheTownHall,whenupwards ofsixty?entlemensatdown.Thedinner wasprovidedbyMr.LucasoftheShamrock Hotel,andgavegeneralsatisfaction.

Acaseofshootingwithintenttodobodily harm,washeardintheFremantlel'olice Court,onthe8thJanuarylast,andcreated considerableexcitement.Theproceedings oftheMagistratesinthecaseinquestionhave beenfreelycommentedupon,andtheconvictionthatinWesternAustraliathereisalaw fertherichmanandanotherforthepoor man,isthroughthefindingofthe MagisterialBenchdailygainingground. Asthepartiesinthepresent"shootingcase" moveamong"colonialgentry,"thecasewas dismissed.

FitomtheGovernor'sspeechattheMetro politanAgriculturalSociety'sdinner,weare gladtohavetoreportthattheTelegraphline toEuclawillbecompletedinJunenext,

THEdesirabilityofadoptingaResponsible formofGovernment.,hasbeenagainputforwardbyMr.Cowther,memberforChampion Bay.Themajorityofthecolonistsarein favorofachangetoaResponsibleformof Government,andthesoonerthechangeis effected,thebetteritwillbeforthecolony-

AschemeofformingasettlementinNew Zealand,exclusivelyofGoodTemplars,has beenputforwardbyaMr.Broomhall,and hasbeenreceivedwithfavorbytheW.A. Times,Wetrustthatthewell-wishersofthe colonywillnotinduceallourGoodTemplar friendstogothither,Ourpresentdepressionistobeaccountedforfromthefactthat ourpopulationisstationary.Wewant peopleandthereforecannotaffordtoso summarilydisposeofourGoodTemplar population.

WEregrettostatethatMr.J.Murray whowaswellknowninPerth,hasbeenmissingfromhisresidenceontheBeaufort,since the5thJanuarylast.Astrictsearchafter theunfortunatemanhasbeenmade,butonly aportionofhisclothingwasdiscovered.

TuxwreckofthesteamerGeorgettewas soldfor£40andthecargofor£5.

WEregrettoreportthedeathofMr.T. WilsonofYork,whichhappenedonWednesdaylast.ItappearsthatMr.Wilsonwas endeavoringtostoparunawayhorseand trap,twhenhewasstruckinthechestbythe shaftsofthetrapandreceivedsuchinjuries thathediedshortlyafterwards.

InpresentingyouwiththeirReportfor thehalf-yearendingDecember31st,1876, Yourcommitteehavemuchpleasureinbearingwillingtestimonytothestabilityofthe Society.Duringthehalf-year,asusual,instructingandamusingreadingswererendered,byvariousmembersattheweekly meetings,andthediscussionswhichfrom timetotimetookplace,wereintelligently debated.

TheareseventymembersontheSociety's booksatpresent,ofwhomtwoarehonorary members.Thelasthalf-yearlyteameeting wasineverywayadecidedsuccessin pointofnumbersitwasthelargest gatheringyetassembledundertheauspices oftheSociety.andafterpayingallexpenses outoftheproceedsthereremainedabalance totheSociety'screditof£413s,10dwhich includedadonationfromMr.A.D.Letchof onepound.

ItwasthepleasingdutyofyourCommittee, duringtheirtermofofficetopresentonyour behalf,acongratulatoryaddresstoHis LordshiptheBishoponhisrestorationto health,afteraverypainfulandprotracted illnessandyourCommitteeaskthemembers torendertheirbestthankstoMr.11.J.Moll, whokindlyengrossedtheaddress,andwho executedtheworkinsuchamannerasnot onlytoreflectthehighestcreditonhimself butontheSociety,ofwhichheisamember. YourCommitteeinpresentingtheirfirst annualreport,havemuchpleasureincongratulatingthemembersontheprogress achievedduringthepastyearbytheSociety; thisprogresshasbeendespitethemanydifficultiesincidentaltoayoungSociety,ofso markedacharacterastoleadtoentertain largehopesoftheSociety'sfuturewelfare.

Bothincrueltyandfanaticismtheyare worsethantheTurksandwithlessprovocation.IftheCzarshouldeverget toConstantinople,bothEuropeand Asiawillhavereasontoregretthe ioam,downfalloftheCaliph.What,then, doesMr.Gladstonemeanbyhounding onRussianan]otherschismatics-to whomjusticeandmercyareunknown, andwithwhomhehasnothingincommon,exceptaversiontotheVicarof Christ-tofurtherbrutalities.Inhis recentpamphlet,"PartyandPatriotism,"SirEdwardSullivanquotes testimonieswhichmaychillevenMr. Gladstone'senthusiasmforhisbarbarous allies,whetherofRussiaortheDanubian Principalities.LordPalmerstontruly describedRussiaasguiltyof"atrocities disgracefultohumannature."Sir HenryBulwerreportedfromConstantinogletoEarlRussell,in1864,that Uircassiathissavagerower,intent onlyontheneedsofitsowninfernal policy,"slaughterslikesheepthe children,helplesswomen,andoldmen. Havingfurnishedthisagreeablespectacletothedelightedparents,theythen massal-sslthelatter,andprobably wound-uptheentertainment,bysinging aTeDemo,ifthathymnfindsaplacein "Orthodox"devotions.

Ifwemightofferadvicetosoeminent apers,nasMr.Gladstone,forwhomwe desireonlyblessings,ande:peciallythe crowninggraceofconversion,itwould betomakearetreat,andtoponderin religioussilenceonhisexilefromthe communionofAaints,andthewreck whichhehasmadeofaonceloftydeputation.HewillfindintheChurch.and nowhereelse,truth,peace,andliberty plenaryabsolutionforthepast,and joyfulhopeforthefuture;andwill become,byoneactofmanlyrepentance andconfession,whatheisnotnow,a friendofGod,aministerofjustice,and aChristianpatriot.

Thetwenty-twobranchesoftheLeague namedwerefullyrepresentedontheoeassion, andabouthalf-a-dozendifferentbandsof music,headedbybeautifultemperancebanners,wendedtheirwayfromvariousparts ofthemetropolistojoininthecelebration.ExeterHall,whichis,itissaid, ofthelargestplacesofmeetinginthe w&id,wascrowdedtooverflowing.The attendanceoftheclergywasverynumerous. Idonotsupposethatanymanwitha Catholicheartinhimneedstobetoldthat FatherMathewwasburnintheGoldenVale, ioTipperary,intheyear1790.Thathe wasapriestinCork,asapastoroftheparish, apreacherandaconfessor,afriendandfather tothepoor,aspecialshepherdtolittle children,avisitorofthesickinthehospital atthetimeoffeverandcholera.Ilewasa manwhofulfilledallthedutiesofparish priestwiththelargeheartoftheGood Shepherdbeforeheeverenteredhisapostleshipoftemperance.Intheyear1838,when hewasnotlessthan45yearsofage,hemade uphismindtofoundthefirsttemperance society.Ilecalledameeting,andatthat meetingtherewerenotmanypresent.He saidtothosethatcametogether,"Ihave assembledyouhere,thatwithmeyoumay renouncetotallyallintoxicatingdrink. FatherPolice,ofS.Anne's,Spitalflelds;Mr. TomCampbell,Mr.Power,Mr.Parker,4-c., andafteracollectionhadbeenmade,anda voteofthankspassedtohisEminence,the proceedingswerebroughttoaclose.The neighbourhoodoftheStrandwasforsome timeafterenlivenedbythevariousbandsof music,astheystartedhomewardstovarious partsofLondon.

LOUISELATEAUBEFORETHE BELGIANROYALACADEMYOF MEDICINF.

AfterhavingexaminedtheeventsofBois d'Haineundereveryaspect,andtestedthe sincerityofthegirlinathousanddifferent ways,andbymeansofvariedandmultipliedexperiments,theeminentLouvainprofessorlaiditdownasestablishedbeyond question,thatthofactsbothofthestigmatisationandoftheecstasywererealandfree fromdeception.l'assing,then,totheexplanationtobegivenofthosefacts,Dr. Lefebvrethusconcludes:-

questionwhichinvolvedaphilosophical,in additiontoitspurelyscientificaspector becausenofavourableopportunitypresented itselffordealingwiththecase. Butthepresentation,thusalmostsimultaneouslymade,oftwoworkstreatingofthe subject,showedclearlythatitwasnowripe fordiscussion.Andso,initssessiononthe 3rdofOctobet1874,thechiefmedicalbody ofthecountry,inconformitywithusage, appointedaspecialcommitteetoreporton theworksthathadbeenreadbeforethe Academy.Thiscommittewascomposedof MM.Fossion,Mascart,andWarlomont, thefirstnamedbeingPresident,andthe othertwobeingchargedwiththedutyof presentingthereport. Thereportofthiscommittee,adocument ofgreatimportance,wasreadatthesession ofthe13thFebrurary,byM.Warlomont. Thatgentleman,toshowhowthestudyof M.Charbonnier'sworkhadrendered,anexaminationoftheeventsatBoisd'Ilaine necessary,spokeasfollows:"Wasthecommitteetoconfineitselfto anexaminationoftheworkbeforeit,under theoneaspectofitspurelyscientificvalue, withoutundertakinganyexaminationofthe factstowhichtheworkhadreference? Thiswould,nodoubt,havebeentheeasier coursetotake.But,then,anopportunity wouldbei:eglectedofputtingtheAcademy inpossessionofanactualmedicalobservation,ascompleteascouldpossiblybemade, offacts,which,whetherwelikeitornot, cannolongerbeexcludedfromdiscussion. HowisthenameofLouiseLateautobe mentionedwithoutimmediatelycallingup allthetumultwhichthatnamehasprovoked?Booksofscienceandofphilosophy, officialreports,academicdiscourses,accounts ofvisits,feuzlletens,conferences,pamphlets, newspaperarticles,everykindofliterary production,hasbeenplacedundercontributiontokeepthepublicinformedaboutthe sttgmatisteofBoisd'Ilaine.Forthelast year,however,thepublicationsregardingthe casehavebeanalmostexclusivelyofa scientificcharacter,andtheyhaveevenreceivedakindofofficialconsecrationfromthe recentvoteoftheRoyalAcademyof Medicine.

ItwillFeofservicetothosereaders whocannotdevotethemselvestoaspecial studyofthecaseinitsscientificaspect,to giveabriefstatementofthefactsofthe WCitself,pointingoutthedifferentexplanationsofitthathavebeenattempted,and indicatingclearlythepresentstateofthe questioninascientificpointofview.

"Studying,inthefirstplace,thequestion ofthehemorrhage,Ihavedemonstratedthat theperiodicbleedingsofLouiseLateau belongtonospeciesofhemorrhagethathas receivedaplaceintheregularclassification ofscience;that,moreover,theycannotbe regardedassimilartoanyoftheanomalous orextraordinarycasesrecordedinmedical annalsthat'infine,thelawsofphysiology furnishnoexplanationoftheiroccurrence. Comingnexttotheecstasy,Ihavecarefullygoneoverthecharacteristicfeatures ofallthosenervousaffectionsthathave beenregularlyclassified,withwhichthe ecstasyofLouiseLateaucouldberegarded ashavinganysortofresemblance,however remote;andIconsiderthatIhavedemonstratedtheimpossibilityofconnecting ftwithanynervousaffectionthathas hithertofallenunderthecognizanceof science.Ihavepenetratedthedomainof theoccultsciencestheirdarkrecesses furnishuswithnomoredataforanexplanationoftheeventofBoisd'Ilaine,thanthe freescienceswhichexpandinthefulllight ofday." Theappearenceofthe;workwasunquestionablyafactofgreatimportance,andit markedaveryimportantepochinthe historyofthecaseofLouiseLateau.No oneacquaintedwiththecalmandreflective spiritofDr.Lefebvre,andwiththeindependenceofhischaracterandconvictions,could regardtherealityoftheextraordinaryevents occurringatBoisd'Ilaineasanylongeropen toquestionandifanydoubtwaspossible, itcouldregardonlythemannerinwhich thefactswastobeexplained.Wasit,then, truethatthecombinationofstigmasand ecstasybelongtonoknownmalady?Was ittruethatitwasequallyimpossible,within thelimitsofphysiologicalscience,toassign tothemaplaceinthescientificclassificationofdesease,-underanameofthetaown?

Notwithstandingthehighreputeinwhich Dr.Lefebvre'sscientificattainmentswere held,doubtstillhoveredroundthesequestions,and,intheinterestsofscientificprogress,Imakeboldtosaysuchdoubtwas legitimate.Afrankappealwasmadetothe servants,notmerelyofBelgium,butofother countriesaswell,urgingthemtogotoBois d'Hainc,tostudythefactsforthemselves, andtoexpresstheiropinions.TheconclusionsatwhichDr.Lefebvrehadarrived soonreceivedaconfirmationbythepublicationofaworkbyaFrenchphysician-the resultofhisownexaminationofthecase.

Sofarbackastheyear1868,aboutthe middleoftheyear,vaguerumourswere heardofstrangeeventsthatweretaking placeinalittlevillageofHainault.Every Fridayayounggirlshowedontheportions ofherbody,thatcorrespondedtothewounds ofourSaviour,redstainsfromwhichblood flowedmoreorlesscopiously.Itwasalso saidthatoneveryFridaythisyounggirlwas absorbedinecstasy,andremainedfoeseveral hourscompletelyunconsciousofallthatwas passingroundher.Sucharetheprinciple facts.Overandabovethese,rumourspread thestoryofvariousaccessoryincidents, someofwhich,thoughtrue,weredistorted, whileothersweremerelytheoffspringof imagination-Thankstothedailypress,the younggirlsoonbecameknowntothepublic atlarge,andthenameofLouiseLateauwas ineveryonesmouth.Fromtimetotimethe newspapersannounced,inthecolumnof "variousincidents,"thateveryFridaygreat numbersofpersonswerecoming,not merelyfromeverypartofBelgium,but fromothercountriesaswell,tobepresent atthescenewhichwasbeingenactedinthe cottageofBoisd'Haine.Somepaperstook advantageontheoccasiontodeliverfresh homiliesagainst"thesuperstitionofCatholics,"the"stupidityofthemasses,"and "theintriguesoftheclergy."Andevento manypersonswhowerewelldisposed,it seemedthatthestorytoldofLouiseLateau might,perhaps,betrue,butthat,ifso,it oughttobeattributedtosometrickerythat wasbeingpractisedeitherbytheyounggirl herselforbyherfamily. Happilyforthepublic,lightwasthrown onthischaosofrumours,theories,andcontradictoryviews.TheRevueCatholiqueof Louvainpublishedbyinstalments,beginning in1869,a"study,"ormonograph,byProfessorLefebvreontheseextraordinary occurrences.Sometimeafterwardsthis monographappearedintheformofa volume.Wemaytranscribeherethewords inwhichthiseminentphysicianexpressed himselfontheoriginofhiswork:-

areinvolvedintheconsiderationofthiscase -havebeenplacedinanabsolutelynew lightsinceLonget'stime. "Theworkwhichwehavebeenanalysing is,aboveall,aworkoftheimagination.The demonstrationoftheaprioritheorywhich theauthorhassetup,hehasendeavoured byeveryavailablemeanstomakegood, clearingawayeveryobstaclethatiscalculated tocauseembarrassment,andcreatingat:will newfunctions,tothefulfilmentofwhichhe freelyappliestheorgansthatalreadyexist. Hisworkiswritteninalively,imaginative style,anditbearsthestampofconviction. Thereisonlyonethingwhichissadly:wanting-experimentalproofAfewsimpleexperimentsonanimals,logicallycarriedout, wouldhaveinformedhimhowtheywithstandalong-oontinuedabstinence,andwhat modificationsthisabstinence,effectsin theirorgansandfunctions.Itistobe regrettedthathehasnotinstitutedthoseexperiments." Ifthetheoryputforwardonthebasisof physiologicalfactswhicharesodoubtful, findsnofavorwiththelearnedrepresentative oftheAcademyofMedicine,itisnotbecause hehimselfadmitstheconclusionsatwhich M.LefebvrearrivesinhisworkonLouise Lateen.Heconcurs,indeed,sofarasto admit,that,apartfromthequestionoffasting-whichhasnotbeenestablishedby actualdemonstration,andwhich,onthat account,ismostproperlyleftoutofsightin thescientificdiscussionofthecase-the eventsmewingatBoisd'Hainearefree fromallfraudanddeception.ButletM. Warlcmonthimselfspeak:"Afterhavinganalysed,"hesaes,"the workwhichtheAcademyconfidedtoour examination,andhavingrefutedit,especially inthosepassagesthathavereferredtoLouise Lateau,itremainsforforusinourturnto giveourownviewsrelativetothefact, deeplyinterestingasitis,whichformsthe subjectofit."

IhavestatedthatM.Charbonnierand Boi,nswerethefirstpersonsinBelgiumwho undertooktofindfaultwiththeconclusion atwhichM.Lefebvrehadarrived,andto explainonscientificgroundstheeventsof Boisd'Ilaine.M.Boons,however,almost immediatelyafterthereadingofaportionof hiswork,withdrewit,andwasablebythis meanstoescapethesportofthecommittee. WhetherthiscoursewutakenbythedistinguishedphysicianofCharleroifromany wantofrespectfortheopinionsthatmight beexpressedbyhiscolleagues,orfroma wantofconfidenceinthesolidityofhisown reasoning,Iantunabletosay.Imerely statethefactasitoccurred. Thereremainedthenforthecommitteeto examinetheworkofM.Charbonnier.His essayisavoluminousone.Thetheoryset forthinitmaybestated,insubstance,as follows-Abstinencefromallnourishment andtheconcentrationofallthepowersof thesoulononesubjecthavebeentheprintery andindispensableconditionsofbothstigmasandecstasy.Asfarasabstinenceisconcerned,itisperfectlycompatible,ifnotwith astateofhealth,atleastwiththemaintenanceoflife."Thequestionofabstinence," saystheauthor,"isoftheutmostimportance,sinceexceptinconjunctionwithit, noneofthefeaturesofthiscaseareever metwith.Andwhenithasoncebeenexplained,thereisnolongeranythingsupernaturalinanyofthephysiologicalor pathologicalphenomenaofthemystics."

Buthowisthetotalabstinencefromfood compatiblewithlife?Bythelawof"the substitutionoffunctionsandorgans."

AndthenaGermansavant,HerrVirchow, seemedtoaccepttheconclusionsofthe Belgiandoctor,byhisfamoussaying,that theeventsofBoisd'Hainemustberegarded aseitherafraudoramiracle.

Buttherewerepersonswhowerestillunwillingtoacceptthefactsthemselvesas proved,affirmedthoughtheywereinthe faceoftheworld,byahundreddifferent witnesses.Amongthosewhowerethus reluctant,wemayreckon,first,personsof badfaithwhowoulditsnopossiblecircumstanceshaveacteddifferently,andabout whomweneednotfarthertroubleourselves; andthonotherswho,fromphilosophical considerations.seemedtochargeallthose whohadtestifiedtotherealityoftheevents withhavingsacrificedtheinterestsofscience tothoseoftheirreligiousconvictiens. Nevertheless,Dr.Lehebvre'sworkheldits ground,notthatindidnotmeetwithsome sharporiticism,especiallyasregardssomeof itsdetailsbutthatthroughoutthecountry noproductionwithanypretensiontoseriousness,affectedeithertodenythefactsorto giveanaturalexplanationofthem.

"Byvirtueofwhatprocess,"heasks"are theblistersfirstproduced,andthenthe bleeding?Wehaveestablisheltheforinctionofthestigmaticangiomata[vascular tumors].Theconcentrationofattentionresultsinpain,andthisleadstotherepeated touchingofthepartsaffectedfromthis proceedscongestion,whichcausestheblood tostagnateinthecapillaries;asaconsequence,thesebecomeenlarged.Teencomes therushofblood,givingplacetocongestive pulsations,whicharedeterminedbya hemorrhagicdiathesis,andthephenomena disclosethemselvesinalltheirsimplicity theleucocytes[thewhitecorpusclesofthe blood]willpassthroughthesidesofthe capillaries,dischargingthemselvesbeneath thesurfaceoftheepidermis,andtheformationofablisteristheresult.Theaccumulationofbloodcontinuinginproportiontothe enlargementofthecapillaries,theepidermis willeventuallyburst,andthentheblood, eitherbypassingthroughtheoutletscreated bythepreviouspassageoftheleucocytesor, ASisnotunlikely,byaruptureofthe vessels,finallyflowsoutexteriorly,which constitutesthehemorrhage.

ButM.Warlomontgoesstillfurther.He saysthatnotonlyarethestigmasandthe ecstasycapableofexplanationwhentaken apartfromoneanother,butthatintheir uniontheyconstitutewhatiscalledin pathologyanaggregateofsymptoms.Accordingtothisview,stigmasandecetasy thusunitedwouldconstituteamorbidconditionaltogetherunique,whichhedesiguates "stigmaticneuropathy."andwhichhe definesasfollows:-"Stigmaticneuropathy isanervousaffection,havingitsseatinthe boseofthemedullaoblongataitsfirststage oonsistsintheparalysisofthevassomotor centreandthesecondinitsexcitation."

Presentedinthisway,thereportofthe distinguishedmemberoftheAcademywas notmerelyareport,but,inthestrictsense oftheword,anoriginalwork.Thebook,in fact,inwhichtheauthorhadcombineda candidmethodoftreatingthesubjectwith eleganceofstyleandwithextensiveeruditibn,producedaprofoundsensation.The theorywhichheputforwardmightnaturally leavethereaderindoubtregardingthe solidityofthebasisonwhichitrests;but fromthemodeinwhichitwassetforth,it couldnotfailtoexercisearealfascination overthemindM.Warlomont'sconclusions, asregardstheexplanationofthefacts,were diametricallyopposedtothoseofthework whichM.Lefebvrehadpublishedseveral yearsbefore.Anditwasnotwithoutgreat curiositythatthepublicawaitedthereply ofthelatter.
