ThuswithinfourmonthsofhewingEnglandthemysteryconcerningthe"Open PolarSea,"wasclearedup.TheAlert, advancingtothelimitofnavigation,bad reachedahighernorthernlatitudethanany shiphadpreviouslybeenabletoWein,end asledgepartyhadproceededafew beyondthepositiongainedwithsomuchlabor andprivationbythegallantmencommanded tbhyeSiurnioEdnwagokParproyatedandbf:irthJem7neepaiRom4, intotheguardandkeepingoftheireouptrymentobeagainpushedforwardinadvance duringthefollowingspring.

Owingtothehieintheneighborhoodremaininginmotionuntilalatedate,the Discoverywasunabletosendawayany sledgepartyduringtheautumnof1875. ThesamereasonpreventedtheAlertcommunicatingwithherconsort,althoughthe twoshipswereonlyseventymilesdistant fromeachother,LieutenantIlaweonmalting twomostdeterminedattemptstodoso withoutsuccess.Owingtothebroken-up iceinRobesonChannelremainingunfrozen' heandhiscrewwereobligedtopassthe winteronboardtheAlert.

Apersistentslanderhadstigmatisedthat greatPopeastheenemyoflearningandhe wasaccused,ontheunsupportedtestimony ofJohnofSalisbury,sixcenturiesafterthe supposedeventofhavingburnedthe Palatinelibrary.Itwasscarcelylikelythat thefounderofthePalatineschoolwould havehimselfburntitslibeary.Hewas himselfacollector,alover,andawriterof books.ItwastrueindeedthatSt.Gregory hasrebukedDidier,BishopofVienne,for havingdeliveredpubliclecturesonthe profanepoetsbutsuchacoursewasquite Consistentwithloveoflearning.Hequoted, insupportofthisstatement,St.Gregory's well-knownpanegyriconbooks;andthen proceededtoreview,atconsiderablelength, thehistoryoftheintroductionofChristianityintotheBritishIsles.TheveryRev. Ithasnewbeentermedthe"Seaof AncientIce"-thePalceerysticorPalecruic Sea;andastrandedmassoficebroken awayfromanis,efloehasbeennamedafloeberg. Whereasordinaryiceisusuallyfrom2to 10feetinthickness,thatinthePolarSea,in consequence,ofhavingsofewoutletsby whichtoescapetothesouthwardinanyappreciahlequantity,graduallyincreasesin ageandthicknessuntilitmeasuresfrom80 to120feet,floatingwithitsserviceatthe lowestpart15feetabovethe.waterline. Whentwooftheancientfloes'ofthePolar Seameet,theintermediatelighterbrokenop, andwhichmayhappentobefloatingabout betweenthemalonesuffersitlepressed upbetweenthetwoclosingmassestoa greatheight,producingachaoticwilderness ofangularblocksofallshapesandsizes, varyinginheightupto50feetabovewater, andfrequentlycoveringantreeupwardsof amileindiameter. Owingtothehighlatitudeattained-both theAlertandDiscoverywinteringfurther norththananyshipshadpreviously-the darknessofthewinterWasoflongerdurationandgreaterintensitythanhadever beforebeenexperienced.Bythisdatelast yeartheyhadalreadylestsightofthesun forseventeendaisbutitwaspassedby allwithmuchcheerfulnessandinhopeful spirits.Pennyreadings,theatricals,and songsincharacter,etc.,werekeptupregularlyonceaweek,andaschoolonthelower IP deckwaswellattendedbynearlyallthe crew,theofficersbeingtheteachers. Thecoldexperiencedduringtheearly springwasconsiderablygreaterthanthatin moresoutherlyregions,andquiteputan endtotheideathat"awarmcountryexists atthePole,teemingwithlife."

Thelowesttemperatureobservedwas71 deg.belowzeroofFahrenheit,or104deg. belowfreezingpoint.Themeantemperatureforthirteenconsecutivedayswas59 deg.belowsera,byfarthecoldestweather everexperiencedbefore,andthemercury wasfrozenforty-sevendaysduringthe winter.

Withthereturnofthesunonthe99thof February,afteritslongabsenceofnearly fivemonths,painteamhs,preparationstionsweremadeforthe sledging Onthe12thofMarchMr.Egertonand LieutenantRawson,accompaniedbyPetersonandthedogsledge,startedfromthe Alerttoopencommunicationwiththe Discovery,but,unhappily,onthesecond dayoutthelatterwastakenillwhenthe temperaturewas40deg.belowzero.The campwasimmediatelypitched,hutno improvementtakingplace,thetwoofficers wereobligedtoreturntotheship.Atthe utmostrisksandanobledisregardofthemselves,theysucceededinretainingheatin thepoorfellow'sbodybyalternatelylying oneatatimealongsideofhim,whilethe otherbyexercisewasrecoveringhiswarmth, andthusmanagedtobringhimalivetothe ship,butbothfeetwerebadlyfrostbitten, andheultimatelysankfromexhaustiontwo monthsafterwards.

Duringthefollowingminkthewoetwo Akers,accompaniedbySimmons,seamanof theAlertandRegan,oftheDiscovery,in similarweather-theusualweatherexperiencedbyArctictravellersintheearly spring-proceededinreachingtheDin:every, andrelievingthedoubtandanxietyofall onboardherwithregardtotheproceedings andpositionoftheAlert.When'oommisaeratedabouttheirirost-bittetinoses,cheeks, andlingers,LieutenantReweonjovially replied,"Well,atlastwefeelthatthe cheersfromSouthseabeachhavebeenfairly earned."Allthetravellerswerestartedoff duringthefiritweekinApril,elm*shin beingleftwithonlyhollteedoeentilersAnd menwhosedutieskeptthem'onboard.
