THECATHOLICUNIONOFIRELANDAND THEITALIAN "CLERICALABUSES BILL.

Thefollowingistheprotectrecentlyissued bytheCatholicUnionofIrelandagainstthe Italian"ClericalAbuses"Bill:-The CatholicUnionofIrelandhaveheardwith giiefandindignationthataBillagainstthe so-calledabusesoftheclergyhasbeenintroducedintotheItalianParliament.Inunion withtheirbrethreninItalyandthroughout Christendomtheyprotestagainstthisunjust sacrilegiousmeasure.Theyprotestas childrenofthebestofFathers.PiusIX.. thecommonFatherofthefaithful,whose sacredrightsasVicarofChristandthe divinly-appointadIeadoftheChristian familyonearth,thisBillviolatesand tramplesunderfoot.Theyprotestas Catholics,towhomourLord,TesusChrist hasgiventheright,ofwhichthismeasure seekstodeprivethem,ofrecurringtothe pastorsofHisChurch,andespeciallytothe SovereignPontiff,fordirection,forguidance, andforsupportinalltheirdoubtsand spiritualnecessities.TheyprotestasChristians,believinginasacredheirarchywhich Godhasinstitutedforthegovernmentofhis spiritualkingdom,andwhichthisBillwould thwart,degrade,andenslaveinthedischarge ofitssacredduties.Theyprotestassonsof CatholicIreland,which,throughwealandwee, hasalwaysremainedfaithfultotheHolySee, andwhichheresyorschismhasneverseparatedfromtheInfallibleChairofPeter.because thismeasureendeavourstotearCatholicItaly fromtheRomanPontiff,whoiaherjoy,her glory,andhercrown.Theyprotestasmen. bywhomtheprinciplesofjustice,ofhonour, andoffairplayarestillcherished,because thismeasure,ifpassedintolaw,would violatethepledgedfaithoftreatieswould encroachinthemostoffensivewayonthe rightsoftheclergy,whohadalwaysbeena classofcitizenswithoutreproach,andwell deservingoftheircountrywouldsetupthe civilanthorityasjudgeinthespiritual domain,whichisaltogetheroutsideitscompetencywouldforcethejudiciarytocondemntheinnocent,whohadactedonlyin accordancewiththeirconscienceandin flagrantviolationtotheItalianConstitution, would,assuredly,entailareligiouspersecu- tion-SignedonbehalfoftheCatholicUnion of',Ireland,GRANARD,President.-Dublin, 17thMarch(FeastofS.Patrick),1877."

HEROISM.

Heroismhas,happily,notdiedoutamongst as,Theagehasnotaltogetherdeteriorated. WithinafortnightofeachothertwonobleheartedParisdoctorshavesacrificedtheir livesintheinterestsnotmerelyofscience, butofhumanity.Dr.Cintratwasthefirst toperishthroughblood-poisoning,acouple ofweeksago,whensavingthelifeofa patientbysuckingthevirusfromawound And,morerecently,Dr.Carriere,attheage of31,hassuccumbedthroughinhalingfromthewindpipeofalittlegirlwhowassufferingfrightfullyfromaspasmodicattackof croup.Itwasonlytheotherday,again,that theheartofallEnglandwasstirredprofoundlybythegloriousself-sacrificeofthe sevenhumblecollierswhosetallhazardto themselvesatdefianceinlabouringfordays andnightstogetherwithmightandmainto

extricatefiveoftheirmatesfromthehorrors ofdeathbystarvation.FromtheQueen downwards,everybody,dayafterday, watchedwithbreathier;anxietyfornewsof theresultoftheirsplendidexertions.These obscurelabourerswerenot,likethesoldier, seeking,intheimminentdeadlybreechorinthecannon'smouth,thebubblereputation. Theywereworkinginthebowelsofthe earth,ingrimeanddarkness,hewingtheir waywithpickanddrillthroughyardsupon yardsofsolidcoaltogetattheiraccidentallyentombedcompanions.Whenwarned,at thelast,fromperseveringintheirefforts, thatitwasallhutcertaindeathtothemselves,byreasonoftheblastsofthepent-up airtheirlastblowsuponthethinnedbarrier wouldrelease,witharoarlikethatof artillery-oneofthem,afterthefirstmomentaryhesitation,steppedtothefrontwiththe quietremark,"Well,I'llgoin.if'tisdeath." sixothersinrapidsuccessionfollowinghis gloriousexample.Andtheywentin-and. asallEnglandknowsfullwell,theyconquered.Ifevermenearnedabadgeof honorthosesevenmenearnedit.Ifever thegoldmedaloftheRoyalHumaneSociety wasmeritedthosesevenWelchcolliershave, beyondallquestion,merited,itsbestowal uponthem,oneandall.For,thefiveminers theyrescuedweredistinctlysavedbythem fromthehazardofdrowning,andofdrowningasmiserablyassomanyratscaughtina traporinadrain-pipe.Andtheheroismof thesemenisbynopossibilitytraceableto anyignoblemotive.Itsprangfromthe purestdictatesofhumanity.Actsofheroism there.nodoubt,willbeinthecourseofthe terriblewarnowimmediatelybeginningin EasternEurope,butnonoblerinstancesofit initspurestandloftiestformcanbyany chancecometolightthanthosewhichduring theselastfewdayshavebysympathy swelledtheheartsofallEnglandinwatchingthedesperate.butatlasttriumphant, struggleofthesehumbleantiilliterae descendantsoftheancientBritonsinrescuingtheirfellowworkersfromdestruction.

VONMOLTKEONTHEARMIESOFGERMANY ANDFRANCE,

Field-MarshalVonMoltketooktheopportunityofTuesday'ssittingoftheGerman l'arliamenttodeliveraspeechofarather ominouskind,whichshowedclearlyenough thathehadbeenstudyingthefirstarticlein thecurrentnumberofBlackwood'sMagazine. TheoccasionofhisharanguewastheGovernmentdemandforthesalaryof122 captainstobeaddedtothepeacefootingof 'heArmy.inregardtowhich,theveteran admittedthat,therankandfileremainingat theirpresentnumbers,thenewofficerswere notsomuchwantedinpeaceasinwar, Germany,hesaidnaively,keptonly400,000 menenderarms,againstthe487.000maintainedbyFrance.Theieforeheinsisted.as theFrenchbattalionswereactuallyintended tobedoubledinwar,itcouldnotbesaid thatGermanywasintentuponarmaments thanherneighbor.TheFrenchMilitary Budget,liefurtherpointedout,exceededthe Germanby150.000.000f.ayear,notincludingextras.VonMoltkespokewithevidently grimadmirationofthehaste,thezeal,and theuncommonintelligencewithwhichthe colossaworkofFrenchmilitaryrecognization hadbeencompleted.Referring,then,oddly, toGermanyasapacificcountry,hesaidhe didnotmeantoinsinuateforamomentthat thepeoplehadactuallybecomeobliviousof theachievementsoftheirtroops;butadded thattherewascertainlyamarkedtendency tobeniggardlytowardsthem.Ifthey wishedtheGermanArmytobestrong,they shouldnotbegrudgeinthenecessaryoutlay. Francehadtheadvantageoverthemin numbersandinmaintainingherwarcardes duringpeacetheyrelieduponthecareful educationoftheindividualsoldiersrather thonuponexcessivestrength.Thefresh captainciesproposedwereintendedtoprepare122importantofficersinpeaceforthe worktheywouldhavetodoinwar.Depend uponit,hesaid,these122captainswould havelittlesparetimeforamusementifthey consentedtoappointthem.Themoney, about700,000marksayear,wasthenvoted byalargemajority.

THE12THOFAPRIL.

Thisanniversary,whichrecallstwohappy eventsinthelifeofPiusIX.-hisreturn fromGaetaandhismiraculouspreservation atSt.Agnes-andwhichintheyearsprior totheItalianinvasionwascelebratedwith suchmagnificencebytheRomans,hasthis yearbeenobservedinareligiousmanner. TheTeDeumwassungintheChurchofS. AgnesefuorileattireonTuesdayevening, andwaslargelyattended.IntheChurchof SanLorenzoinLucinaateveryMaasthat beautifulprayer°reamsProPostefteeNostro

wassungbyasinglevoice.Themusicis mostsweetandtouching,andiswell rendered.Thesameprayerissunginthat churzhonthe12thdayofeachmonth.The new-comers,theltalianissimiheldhigh festivalsonthatday,butitisneedles&to saythatthefestivalwasnotareligiousone. RacestookplaceonTuesdayandThursday beyondthePonteNomentana,atwhichthe Kingandhisfollowersassisted.

MR.BUTT'SEDUCATIONBILL.

TheCorporationofDublindidhonorto thebestinterestsofIrelandand,therefore, ofCatholicism,bytheirdemonstrationin supportoftheEducationBilloftheLeader oftheHomeRuleParty.Theattendance waslarge,andtheproceedingsconducted withthemostbusiness-likedecorum throughout,yeteverynowandthenwitaunmistakeableevidencesofenthusiasm.The verygallerieswerecrammed,andthe numberofpriestspresentsomethingremarkable.Theadoptionofthepetitionof Parliamentcouldhardlyhavebeenmore effectivelymovedthanitwasbytheHigh Sheriffofthiscity,AldermanCampbell. ReferringtotheproposalofLordMayoin 1868tofoundaCatholicCollege,leaving TrinityCollegedenominationalforProtestants,andtotheadmissionofMr-Gladstone in1871,thattheCatholicsofIrelandhada grievancetocomplainof,hesaidtheyonly desiredtohavethesamelibertywhichthey wouldconferonothers,andtohavetheir childreneducatedundertheirownguidance, believing,astheydid,thatreligionshould formapartofeducation.TheHighSheriff warmlycommendedMr.Butt'sBill,pronouncingitcompleteandmagnificent.

CRISISINTHECHURCHOFENGLAND.

Thefollowingremarkabledocumenthas justbeenpublished.Itisamemorial addressedtotheArchbishopsandBishopsof theChurchofEngland,andhasbeensub scribedbyfourdeans,eightarchdeacons, aRegiusProfessorofTheology,and manyotherclergymenofpositionandinfluence:"We,theundersignedclergyoftaeChurch ofEngland,beinganxioustoretaintherelationsofChurchandStatewhichhaveso longexistedinthiscountry,ventureto expresstoyourlordships,asourspiritual fathers,.thegreatanxietyanddistresswhich wefeelatthepresentpositionofaffairsOn theonesideweseecoercivemeasuresresorted toforenforcinguniformity,suchashave beenhappilyunknowninthiscountryfor centuies;and,ontheother,adetermination toendureanysufferingratherthansubmitto ajurisdictionwhich,rightlyorwrongly,is regardedaspurelysecular.Moreover,we aremuchimpressedbytheunsatisfaotory characteroftheauthorityandargumentsto whichappealismadeinthecontroversies nowdistractingtheChurch.Forwhilstthe ChurchofEnglandofto-dayhasthesame righttodecreeritesorceremonies,and possessesthesameauthorityincontroversies offaith,asthesameChurchhadatany previousperiodinherhistory,appealisnow made,nottothelivingvoiceoftheChurch, buttoeventsanddocumentswhichhave themselvesalwaysbeenmattersofcontroversy.Believing,aswedo,inthepresence intheChurchofherDivineHead,weare convincedthatwhatisrequiredisnotthe mereinterpretation,howeverskilful,of existinglaw,butthelivingvoiceofthe Churchclearlylayingdownwhatthelaw shallbeinthefuture.

"Withthisconvictionuponourminds,we begtourgeuponyourconsiderationthatin ouropinionnopeacecanbesecuredforthe Church,norcanherexistingrelationswith theStatebelongcontinued,unlesslawsfor theregulationofDivineservice,andfor otherspiritualmattersofprimaryimportance, aremadebyanauthoritywhichbothclergy andlaitywouldfeeltobebindingupon conscienceandweareequallysatisfied thatnoauthoritywillbeconsideredthus; bindingwhichdoesnotproceedfromthe SynodsoftheChurchaswellasfromParliament.Insayingthiswemustaddthatthe legislativeactionoftheChurchisnow paralysedbytheapprehensionthatwhenher SynodicalActsaresubmittedtoParliament intheconstitutionalmanner,materialalterationsmaybemadeinthem,andthatthefinal resultmaybeseriouslyatvariancewiththe intentionsoftheSynods,andmaybecome lawwithouttheirconsent.Wetrustthat yourlordshipswilltaketheserepresentations intoyourseriousconsideration,andinyour wisdomdevisemeasurestoallaytheanxiety anddistresswhicharenowpressingupon Churchmen."

LORDLYTTONONINDIANAFFAIRS.

AtelegramfromCalcuttaannouncesthat theViceroy,inthecourseofaspeech deliveredbyhimbeforetheLegislative Councilwithreferencetothepresentfamine, contrastedtheestimatedexpenseofÂŁ5,250,000 foralargerareaofdistresswiththeactual outlayofÂŁ6.758,000entailedbytheprevious famineinthesmallerareaofBengal.His Excellency,proceedingnexttospeakofthe efficiencyoftheArmy,repudiatedanyhostile intentiononthepartoftheGovernment againstneighboringStates,andexplained thepacificcharacterofitsfrontierpolicy. Heannouncedthesuccessfulsettlement effectedwiththeKhanofKhelat,declaring thatconfidencehadbeencompletelyrestored byBritishinfluence.Hebelievedthatthe securityofthefrontierwasonlyattainable bythefriendlypresenceandsalutary influenceofuprightEnglishgentlemen amongthebarbarousneighborsoftheEmpire, andnotbymilitaryexpeditions.

SignorAllessandroBarberohasmadea verybeautifulcrossasamemorialofthe EpiscopalJubileeofhisHolinessPiusIX. Aspecimenofthiswork,ingold,waspresentedtohisHoliness,whowasgraciously pleasedtoacceptit,andtobestowuponthe donorandhisfamilytheApostolicbenediction.Onwhatmaybetermedtheface thecross,atthejunctionofthearms,inthe familyshieldofPiusIX.,surmountedbythe tiara,andthekeyscrossedonhisback.On theothersideisthefollowinginscription, coniposedbytheJesuiteFatherTongiorgi -"MDCCCLXXVII-AnnoL-AConsecratione-Episcopali-PII-IX-P.M.--Romae."

CONVERSIONS.

NewshasreachedBerlinthatHerrVon Dachrbden,oneoftheleadingpersonagesin GermanFreemasonry,andGrandMasterof thePrussianNationalLodgeinItaly,where heisatpresent,hasbeenconvertedto Catholicity.ThenewshascausedextraordinarysensationinMasoniccirclesat Berlin,andalsoatthePrussianCourt,where hewasanimportantandtrustedperson. Wereadinthe"Univers"thatOnno Klopp,theeminentGermanhistorian,has becomeaconverttotheCatholicfaith. HerrKloppwasreceivedintotheChurchby Mgr.Jacobini,theAustrianNuncioApostolicattheArchiepiscopalPalace,Vienna. TheBaronvonWeghe,formerlyChamberlainoftheKingofHanover,hasbeenreceivedintotheChurchbyMgr.Jiraik, BishopofBudweis,Bohemia.

THEEMPEROROFBRAZIL. TheEmperorofBrazilalmostvieswith thePrinceofWalesasatraveller.His ImperialMajestyDonPedrotheSecond, duringthelastfewyears,atanyrate,hasbeen travellingfarandwideinbothhemispheres. Inagehehasagooddealtheadvantageof theHeir-ApparentHeissixteenyears olderthanthePrince.YethisMajesty's lifehasbutverylittleexceededhalfacentury.BornatRioJaneiroonthe2nd December,1825,hehadhardlycompleted hisfifthyearwhenhisfatherabdicatedin hisfavor,thelawsofthecountryaccording thesuccessiontotheCrowninpreferenceto themalelinewhentherelationshipwas equal.Hishighereducationwasconfided totheBishopofChrysopolisaddedto whichadvantagehehadthebenefitofthe aidofthemostlearnednativeandforehm professor.TheImperialstudententered upontheacquirementofthevarioussciences withindefatigableardour.andatavery earlyagehisloveofstudyprovedofthe greatestpossibleadvantagetohiscountry. At15yearshewasdeclaredtobeofagebythe representativesofthenation.Thecoronationfetestookplaceinthefollowingyear; and,in1843,hemarriedthePrincess ThereseChristinedeBourbon,daughterof FrancisI.,KingoftheTwoSicilies.Accompaniedbyhisbride,hisMajestytook longjourneysinhisStates,inorderto ascertainwhatreformswouldbecalculated toimprovetheconditionofhispeople.By asweepofthepen,hevirtuallyabolished slaveryfor,inDecemberof1871,the BrazilianParliament,underhisinspiration, decreedthatthechildrenofslaves,born afterthepromulgationofthelaw,shouldbe free.andthatthemastershouldbringup suchchildrenuntiltheyattainedtheageof 21,receivinganindemnityinreturn.This decisionwaswelcomedwithintenseenthusiasm,andDonPedroreceivedaddresses fromthepopulationinallthecitieswhich hevisited.Hefoundedahospitalforthe insane,amilitaryschool.amint,andpublic institutionsforeducation.Hereorganized theCentralSchool,establishedonefor mines-anestablishmentcelebratedforthe richnessofitscollectionofpreciousmetals -andfinally,tocompletehiswork,visited thePhilidelphiaExhibition.TheRegency -aswhenhepreviouslyvisitedEuropeduringtheabsenceoftheSovereignwas conidedtotheCrown-PrincessIsabel,who marriedtheCountd'Eu,sonoftheDukede Nemours.HerImperialHighnessisunderstoodtohavereceivedthemostcarefulinstruction,thoroughlybefittingherrank. Herpoliticaleducation,furtheredby severaljourneystoEurope,andmoreparticularlytoEngland,istheworkofher fatherexclusively.

BISHOPLEE,

OneoftheMormonbishopshaslatelymet withhisdeserts.Mr.J.D.Lee,theindividual'sname,wasaprominentleaderinthe massacreofapartyof140emigrants,which tookplacesometwentyyearsagoatMountain Meadows,Utah.Thesamespotwherethe ill-fatedemigrantpartylastcamped,and nearwhereamonumentofalargestone crosswaserectedtotheirmemory,was chosenastheplaceofexecution.According tothelawoftheterritory,whichpermitsa criminaltoselectthemodeofhisdeath,Lee electedtobeshot,andshotheaccordingly was.Leemadeafullconfesfionofhisguilt beforehisdeath.Hehadeighteenwivesand sixty-fourchildren.

ANEGRO'SASHUMENT.

AnoldnegronamedPetewasverymuch troubledabouthissins.Perceivinghimone daywithaverydowncastlook,hismaster askedhimthecause'Ohmassa,l'sesucha greatsinner.'ButPete,'saidhismaster, youareafooltotakeitsomuchtoheart. Youneverseemetroubledaboutmysins.' Iknowthereason,massa,'saidPete. Thefollowingincidentoccurredduringa generalreviewoftheAustriancavalryafew monthsago:-Notfarfrom30,000cavalry were-inline.Alittlechild,agirlofnot morethanfouryears,standinginthefront rowofspectators,eitherfromfrightorsome othercause,rushedintotheopenfieldjust asasquadronofhussarscamesweeping aroundfromthemainbody.Theymade thedetourforthepurposeofsalutingthe Empress,whosecarriagewasdrawnupin thatpartoftheparadeground.Downcame theflyingsquadron,chargingatamadgallop. downdirectlyuponthechild.Themotherwas paralyzed,aswereothers,fortherecouldbe norescuefromthelineofspectators.The Empressutteredacryofhorror,forthedestructionwasinevitable-andsuchterrible destruction,thetramplingtodeathbya thousandironhoofs.Directlyunderthe feetofthehorseswasthelittleone,another instantmustsealitsdoom,whenastalwart hussar,whowasinthefrontline,without slackeninghisspeedorlooseninghishold, threwhimselfoverbythesideofhishorse's neck,seizedandliftedthechildandplaced itwithsafetyonthesaddle-bow; andthis hedidwithoutchanginghispaceorbreaking thecorrectallignrnentofthesquadron.Ten thousandvoiceshailedwithrapturousapplausethegallautdeed,andotherthousands applaudedwhentheyknew.Twowomen therewerewhocouldonlysobtheirgratitude inbrokenaccents,themotherandtheEmpress.Andaproudandhappymomentmust ithavebeenforthehussarwhenhisEmperor,takingfromhisownbreasttherichly enamelledcrossoftheOrderofMaria Theresa,andhungituponthebreastofhis gallanttrooper.

InthejudgmentoftheCatholic,anaptized peopleisnolongerinastateofnature,but isadmittedtoastateofsupernaturalgrace. AndthoughIbelievethenumberofthose whohaveneverbeenbaptizedtobevery greatinEngland,andtobeincreasingever year,neverthelessIbelievetheEnglish people,asamass,tobeabaptizedpeople. PIETYOUTSIDETHECHURCH.

Catholicmissionersinthiscountryhave oftenassuredmeofafact,attestedalsoby myownexperience,thattheyhavereceived intotheChurch,personsgrowntoadultlife, inwhomtheirbaptismalgracewasstillpreserved.Toascribethegoodlivesofsuch personstothepowerofnaturewouldbe Pelagianism.Todenytheirgoodnesswould heJansenism.Andwithsuchaconsciousness,howcananyconvertregardhispast spirituallifeintheProtestantChurchasa niockery1 Ihavenodeeperconvictiontitan thatthegraceoftheHolySpiritwaswith mefrommyearliestconsciousness.Though atthetime,perhaps,IknewitnotasIknow itnow,yetIcanclearlyperceivetheorder andchainofgracebywhichGodmercifully ledmeonwardfromchildhoodtotheageof twentyyears.Fromthattimetheinterior workingsofHislightandgrace,whichled meeventuallytoasubmissiontothefulness oftruth,arearealityasprofoundlycertain, intimate,andsensibletomenowasthatI live.Neverhave1allowedanyofthose whocometomeforguidanceorinstruction toharbouradoubtofthepastworkingsof graceinthem.Itwouldbenotonlyasin ofingratitude,butasinagainsttruth.The workingoftheHolySpiritinindividual soulsisasoldasthefallofman,andaswide asthehumanrace.

IbelievethatthepeopleofEnglandwere notallguiltyofthefirstactsofheresyand schismbywhichtheyweresepatatedfrom theCatholicunityoffaith.Theywere robbedofit.Inmanyplacestheyrosein armsforit.Thechildren,thepoor,theunlearnedatthattimewerecertainlyinnocent -muchmorethenextgeneration.They werebornintoastateofprivation.They knewnobetter.Nochoicewasbeforethem. Theymadenoperverseactofthewillin remainingwheretheywereborn.Every successivegenerationwasrtilllessculpable, inproportionasmenwerebornintoastate ofprivation,andunderthedominionofa traditionoferroralreadygrownstrong.For threecenturiestheyhavebeenbornfarther andfurtheroutofthetruth,andtheir culpabilityisperpetuallydiminishing.Nevertheless,theDivinelawisperemptory "To hintwhoknowethtodogood,andclothit not,tohimitissin."EveryDivinetruth,as itshinesinuponus,laysitsobligationon ourconsciencetobelieveandtoobeyit,and nothingthatIhavesaidmodifiestheabsolute andvitalnecessityofsubmittingtothe CatholicChurchastheonlywayofsalvation tothosewhoknowit,bytherevelationof God,tobesuch.

INVINCIBLEIGNORANCE.

InTagaste,alittletownoftheRoman provinceofNorthAfrica,thereliveda Romanofpatricianrank,marriedtoalady ofthenameofMonica,whosesanctity-is honoredbytheuniversalChurchonthe4th ofMay.TheirsonAugustineshowedsigns ofunusualcapacitiesbutataveryearly agehegavehimselfovertoanunrestrained indulgenceinallthelibertinepractices commontotheheathenRomanyouth.His mother,apiousChristianlady,usedtoshed manytearsinsecretbeforeGodoverthese excessesinherson'swayofliving,andstill moredidshedeplorehishavingbeendrawn intothewickedandabandonedsectofthe Maniehaeans.Atthirtyyearsofage AugustineremovedtoRome,topractise thereasaprofessorofrhetoricandpolite literaturebutneitherthewayoflifenor thesocietyofRometakinghisfancy,heremovedfromRometoMilan,whitherhis motherMonica,withseveralofhisrelations, followedhim.IIeresherepeatedlyurged himtoplacehimselfundertheinstruction ofSt.Ambrose,whowasthentheBishopof Milan,thoughforsometimewithoutmuch success.

Theologiansteachthatmanybelongtothe Churchwhoareoutofitsvisibleunity,and thattoheoutoftheChurchisnopersonal sin,excepttothosewhosininbeingoutof it.Thatis,theywillbelost,notbecause theyaregeographicallyoutofit,butbecause theyareculpablyoutofit.Andtheywho areculpablyoutofitarethosewhoknowormight.andthereforeoughttoknow-that it,istheirdutytosubmittoit.Wehopefully applythisbenignlawofourDivineMaster asfaraspossibletotheEnglishpeople. First,itisapplicableinthelettertothe wholemultitudeofthosebaptizedpersons whoareundertheageofreason.Secondly, toallwhoareingoodfaith,ofwhatsoever agetheybesuchasagreatmanyofthe poorandunlettered,towhomitisveryoften physically,andveryoftenmorally,impossibletojudgewhichisthetruerevelationor ChurchofGod.Isayphysically,becausein thesethreehundredyearstheCatholic Churchhasbeensosweptoffthefaceof Englandthatnineortengenerationsofmen havelivedanddiedwithoutthefaithbeing somuchasproposedtothem,ortheChurch evervisibletothemandIsaymorally, becausethegreatmajorityofthepoor,from life-longprejudiceareoftenincapableof judginginquestionssoremovedfromthe primarytruthsofconscienceandChristianity. Ofsuchsimplepersonsitmaybesaidthat theyaretobeclassedmorallywithinfants. Again,tothesemaybeaddedtheunlearned inallclasses,amongwhommanyhaveno contactwiththeCatholicChurch,orwith Cathoiicbooks.Add,lastly,thelargeclass whohavebeenstudiouslybroughtup,with allthedominantauthorityoftheEnglish traditionofthreehundredyears,tobelieve sincerely,andwithoutadoubt,thatthe CatholicChurchiscorrupt,haschangedthe faith,andthattheauthoroftheReformationistheSpiritofholinessandtruth.It mayseemincredibletosomethatsuchan illusionexists.Butitiscredibletome,becausefornearlyfortyyearsofmylifeIwas fullypossessedbythiserroneousbelief.To allsuchpersonsitismorallydifficultinno smalldegreetodiscoverthefalsehoodofthis illusion,Allthebetterpartsoftheirnature

Thefollowingcircumstance,thatimmediatelyledtohisconversion,mustbe relatedinAugustine'sownwords,whenit willatonceappearhowmercifulwasthe designofGodinpermittingSt.Athanasius tobedrivenintoexile,inorderthat,through hiswanderingsfromcitytocity,theknowledgeofthewonderfullifeofprayer,and self-sacrificewhichwasbeingledbythe monksandsolitariesofEgyptmightnot onlybedisseminatedfarandwide,butmight beattestedbythelivingtestimonyofan eye-witnesswhoseveracitywassounimpeachableasthatofanexiledandpersecuted Bishop.

Augustine,itwouldappear,waslivingin lodgingsinMilanwithtwofriends,-Nebridius,whohadengagedhimself,atAugustine's request,asassistant-teacherintheestablishmentbelongingtooneoftheprincipal MilanesecitizensandAlypius,whopractised inthelaw-courts,andwho,atthetimewhen thecircumstancesabouttoberelated happened,waswaiting,asSt.Augustineexpressedit.forthelawvacationtoexpire,in ordertorecommencesellinghislawopinions, asIsoldmylessonsinrhetoric.

Thushespokeand,asitwere,travailinginthepainsofthebirthofanewlife,he fixedhiseyesagainonthebook,andread onandon,untilheunderwentachangein theinnerman,whichThou,0myGod,didst behold,andhismindwassetfree,aswas soontoappear.Forwhilsthecontinued reading,andthetideofinwardfeelingagitatedhimtoandfro,hegreanedinwardly, andatlength,burstingthroughallrestrain, hemadehisresolveforthebetterpert,and saidtohisfriend"Ihavenowtornmyself freefromallourformerhopes,andhave madeupmymindtobeaservantofGod hereinthisveryplace,andfronithisvery hour,Iintendtobegin.Ifyouhaveno mindtodothesame,atleastputnohindranceinmyway."Theotherreplied,that insuchaservice,andforsogreatareward, liewouldcontinuetobearhimcompany, Andthusbothofthem,nowbecomeThine, settoworktobuildthetower,thecostof whichtheyhadrightlyestimatedtobethe "leavingofallthingsinordertofollow Thee."

Isaidthesethings,continuesthebookof hisConfessions,andshedafloodoftearsin thebitternessofmysoul,when,behold,I heardavoicefromaneighboringhouse singinginakindofrefrain,-whetherthe voicewasthatofboyorgirlIcannottell,"Takethebookupandread,takethebook upandread."Instantlymycountenance altered,and1beganconsideringmostintently whetheriteverhappenedthatboysin theirplaysangorrepeatedanythingofthe fort;and,notwithstandingallmyefforts,I Couldnotrecollectmyselftohaveeverheard anythingofthekind.Socheckingmyflood oftears,Iroseup,interpretingwhatIhad heardtomeannothingelsethanaDivine commandtoopenthebook,andtobeginto readthefirstchapteratwhichitwasopened forIheardofAntony,that,cominginduringthereadingoftheGospel,hereceived thatwhichwasbeingreadasanadmonition speciallyaddressedtohimself,viz.the words"Goandsellallthouhest,andgive tothepoor,andfollowMe,andthoushalt havetreasureinheaven;"andthathewas convertedbythemonthespot.Ireturned, thereforeinhastetotheplacewhereAlfpius wasseatedforitwastherethatIgadlaid downthebookoftheApostlewhenIhad goneaway.Iseizedthebook,openedit, andinsilencereadthesentenceonwhichmy eyesfirstrested,"Notinriotinganddrunkenness,nottochamberingandimpurities,notIn contentionandnay;hutputyeontheLord JesusChrist,andmakenotprovisionforthe fleshinitsconcupiscences"(Rom./chi.13)I hadnodesiretoreadfurther,norwasitnecessary;forthemomentIcametotheendof thesentence,Ifeltacalmlighltinfusedinto mysoul,andallmydarkmisgivingswere dispelled. Theautumnvacationbeingended,St. Augustinetellsusthathegavenoticetothe Milanesetoprovidethemselveswithanother mastertosellwordstothem,whileheplaced himselfunderthedirectionofSt.Ambrose topursueacourseofecclesiasticalstudy.On theEastereve,A.D.387,hewasbaptized,togetherwithhissonAdeodatssandhisfriend Alypius,bySt.Ambrose.Intheyear:391 hewasordainedpriestatHippo,andfour yearslaterhewasmadeBishopofHippo.lie diedathippoonthe28thofAugust430,at theadvancedageofseventy-six.lieisregardedasoneofthegreatestofthedoctors oftheChurchandbesideshismanylearned works,whichareknownonlytostudents andtolearnedmen,heistheauthoroftwo workswhichhavebeentranslatedinto nearlyeverylanguageofChristendom pretendingtoanydegreeofcultivation,andwhichhavethuscome intothehandsofallclasses.Theseworks arehisConfessions,fromwhichtheabove narrativehasbeentaken,andhisTreatiseof theCityofGod.

Onacertainday,saysSt.Augustinein hisbookofConfessions,whenNebridins happenedtobeabsentuponsomebusiness orother,onePontinianus,acountrymanof ourssofarasthathewasanAfrican,and holdingsomehighmilitaryofficeaboutthe emperor'spalace,calledtopayusavisit, whetherforanyparticularpurposeornot,I cannotsay.Wesatdowntoconverse,andin ashorttimehiseyehappenedtobecaughtby amanuscriptlyinguponakindofbagatelleboardthatwasbeforeus.Hetookitup, openedit,andfoundittobetheEpistlesof StPaul,notalittletohissurpriseforhe supposedittobeoneofthebookswhichI enjoyedinmyprofession.Onseeingit, however,hesmiledand,withgreatgoodhumour,congratulatedmeonthisbeingthe onlybookwhichhefoundinmypossession, notwithstandinghishavingsomewhattaken mebysurprise;forhewasaChristian,and oftenspenthoursinthechurch,prostrated beforeThee,0myGod,inlongandearnest prayer.WhenItoldhimofmybeingin thehabitofgivingaconsiderabletimeto thestudyoftheseEpistles,hebegantoturn theconversationuponthesubjectofthe EgyptianmonkAntony,who,asitwould appear,waswellknowntoThyservants, althoughtoushewasquiteunknown, Discoveringourentireignoranceofthe subject,heenteredintoamoredetailed accountofonewhohadbecomesoeminent, andsubsequentlyturnedhisdiscourseupon themanycongregationsofthemonkswho filledthedesertwiththesweetsavourof theirholylife,ofallwhichweknewjustas

AtthistimePontinianusandhiscompanion,whohadturnedoffinadifferent directioninthegarden,happenedtoarrive atthecottageinthecourseofthesearch theyweremakingfortheirfriends;and, findingthemthere,theywarnedthemofits beingtimetoreturn,asthedaywasfar advanced.Theirtwofriends,however,begantotellthemoftheirresolutionand purpose,andofthemannerinwhichthey hadbeenbroughttomakeuptheirminds; beggingthemthat,iftheywerenotdisposed tojointhem,theywouldatleastletthem alone.Thetwo,whowerethusaddressed, -not,however,withoutapassingregretat theirownlot,-remainedunchanged,and offeringtheirpiouscongratulations,and commendingthemselvestotheirfriends' prayers,wentbacktothepalacewithhearts clingingtotheearth,whiletheothertwo, fixingtheirheartsuponheaven,remained behindinthecottage.Bothofthesewho thusremainedbehindwereengagedtobe marriedandonhearingoftheirresolve, theirintendedbridesdeterminedinlike mannertoconsecratetheirvirginityto God.

Augustine,inhisConfessions,continues todescribetheinwardstruggleofmindinto whichhehimselfwasthrownbythisnarrativeofPontinianus. WhatwastherethatIdidnotsayto myselfwithwhatscourgesofwordsdidI notstrivetolashmysoulforward,thatit mightfollowmeinmyefforttogoinsearch ofThee?YetIdrewback,andbecamean obstinaterecusant,withoutknowinghowto excuseitself.Argumentwasalldoneaway withandsilenced,andthereremainednothingbutastateoftremblingthathadnota wordtosayinitsownbehalf.Mysoul withinmeseemedstrickenwithafearlike tothedreadofdeath,ofbeingtornasunder fromthewholeoftheevilsourceofhabit, bywhichshewasreallywastingherselfto death.

WheninthedaysofthePariscommunethenewswasspreadfarand !idshowthechiefpastorathefirst

MonsignorChecs,Archbishopof Quito,hadincurredtheangerofthe revolutionarysocietieswithwhichhis countryisunhappilyinfested,byhis fearlessassertionofthedutiesof christiansubjects,andhisdenunciationoftheevilsofrevolt.Some miscreantmembersofthesesocieties, thinkingthemselvesaggrieved,swore vengeanceontheiraggressor.The deathoftheArchbishopwasdetermined on,andaruffianinduced,underpromise ofaconsiderablebribe,toundertakethe carryingoutoftheirresolve.Itissaid, thebetterday,thebetterdeed.The occasionselectedbytheassassinforthe accomplishmentofhistask,shows,we aretemptedtosay,evenmorethanthe deeditself,bowcallouswerehisfeelings, howmuchathome,hewas,ininfamy andhowfittedforhisiniquitouswork. Onthesacreddayonwhichthechristian worldcommemoratesthedeathofthe Saviourofmankindthereareinall CatholicChurchesdevotionsofanunusualcharacter,intendedtoremindthe worshippers;,ofthetragicsacrificeof Calvary.Aprocessionstartingfrom theHighAltar,visitsthesidechapel wheretheadorableHosthasbeenpreservedfromthedaybefore,andbearing Itwitheverymarkofreligioushonor returnsinacircuittotheplacewhence ithadsetout.Thereisnoconsecrationoftheelements,-acircumstancein whichtheservicesofGoodFridayare singularamongtheservicesofthe year-butalittleunblessedwineis usedtopurifythechaliceinwhichthe sacredHosthasreposed,andisconsumedbythecelebrantintherite.In hisknowledgeofthesefactsthemurderer,foundthemeansofaccomplishing histask.AsecondJudas,heshowed himselfthefaithfulimitatorofthefirst. OntheGoodFridayofthepresentyear MonsignorChecacelebratedinperson theofficesofthefeastintheCathedral ofQuito.Theassassinwaspresentin theChurch,withtheinstrumentofhis hellishdesign-apackageofstrychnine -inhispossession.Thefewmoments oftheabsenceoftheclergyinprocessionfromtheHighAltarwerehis opportunity.Glidingintothesanctuary,hethrew,thecontentsofthe packageintothecruetofwineresting onthecredencetable,andunobserved bythecongregationwhoseattention wasdirectedtotheceremoniesin anotherquarteroftheChurch,regained hisplace.Whatheanticipatedunhappilyoccurred.TheprocessionreturnedtotheHighAltarandthewine wastenderedinduecoursetothe Archbishop,whounsuspiciouslydrank it.Hewasimmediatelytakenill.The poison,wasnotsospeedyinitseffects astopreventhisunvestingandreturningtohishome.Buthehadscarcely crossedtheprecinctsofhispalace,when alarmingsymptomsweremanifested. Hehadjusttimetoutteracomplaint, andbeforehisattendants,whoflewto hisassistance,couldreachhim,hefell onthefloorandinstantlyexpired. RUSSIANATROCITIES.

CARDINALCULLENhasdonewellin issuingapastoralinwhich,having explainedtheecclesiasticalregulations forthe"MonthofMARY."hedirects theattentionofCatholicstotheconductofRussiatowardsthePoles. Thisisthemorenecessarybecause many,carriedawayMr.GLADSTONE'S speechesandletters,appeartothink thatinthegreatstrugglenowgoingon intheEast,Russiaisalambinsteadof awolf.Greatashavebeenthecrimes ofTurkey(andshehascrimsonedthe volumeofhistorywithfearfulatrocities), thecrimesofRussiamustbelooked uponasstainedwithastilldeeperdye. TheTurksmaysay(thoughitisno excuseforcruelety)thattheirmis-sion istoendeavortotrampleoutChristianitybutRussia,whichblasphemouslycallsitself"Holyltussia," canurgenosuch,plea.Heremperor andhissubjectsknowwellthatthe Polesarefellow-Christians,though differinginsomepointsfromthe RussianformofChristianity.Cardinal CULLENdoesnotmakelightof Turkishtyranny(todosowouldbeto contradicthistory),buthe,mosttruthfully,insiststhatsufficientattention hasnotbeendevotedtothebrutalityof RussiatowardsherunfortunatePolish subjects.Nodenunciationcanbeexcessivedirectedagainstapowerwhich hastreatedwithinhumanebarbarity theinhabitantsofaoncepowerful country,apartofwhichbecamesubject toRussiabytherobberyandspoliation towhichhistoryhasgiventhetoo gentlenameof"partition."Thesons ofthatgloriouslandwhichgavetothe worldsuchheroesasZOBIESKIand KOSKIUSKO,themenwhoarethedescendantsofthosebravesoldierswho preventedtheTurksfromconquering Europebyland(aPopehadatLepanto preventedthemfromconquering Europebysea),deservedfardifferent treatmentfromapowerwhichcalls itselfChristian.TheCardinalforcibly warnsthatthosewhohavethedirection ofpublicaffairsthatifRussiabeallowedtotakepossessionofConstantinopleandoftheTurkishprovincesin AsiaMinorthereiseverydangerthat Cossackbarbaritywillbewidelyspread, thatlibertywillbedestroyed,andthat thefreedomofGoD'sChurchwillbe placedingreatjeopardy.Thesesolemn wordsshouldbewellweighedbyall whocaninanywayinfluencepublic opinion.TheCardinalproducesunanswerableevidencefromofficialcorrespondenceinsupportofhisassertions. CONVERSIONS.-TntheClericalintelligence oftheHomeNews,June8th,1877,weread thefollowing:-TheRev.J.F.Fagge,M.A., fornearlythirtyyearsvicarofAston,Causton,inthedioceseofWorcester,hasresigned hisliving.andbeenreceivedintotheChurch ofRome.TheRev.JamesArthurPoole, B.A.,curateofSt.John's.MilesPlatting,has resignedhiscuracyandbeingreceivedinto theRomanCatholicChurch.Mr.Poolewas ordainedadeaconbytheBishopofManchester,onMarch1st,1874,andappointedto thecuracyofOswaldtwistle,whichheheld abouttwoyears.HeremovedtoManchester in1876.HewasagraduateofTrinityCollege,Dublin.

formerformsanimportantchapterinthe latter,thesubjectbecomesoneofstill higherinteresttotheCatholicpublic.Inthe year1845,tenyearsaftertheMostRevd. Dr.FoldinghadbecomeArchbishopof Sydney,theSistersofMercysettleddownin theleastknownandmostobscureofthe AustralianColonies,WesternAustralia.In theyear1845,thefirstBishopofPerth RightRev.Dr.BradywasinIreland,andhe visitedtheparentHousesoftheOrderof Mercy,BaggotStreet,Dublin,andrequested theservicesofapartyofNunsforhis Mission.Inresponsetothisappeal,three professedNunsandthreeNoviceswere appointedbytheirSuperiorsforthenew foundation,andlefttheHouseinBaggot StreetforPerthunderthecareofthe Bishopofthisdiocese,onthe8thSeptember, 1845.TheywereaccompaniedtoLondon bytheMotherSuperioroftheirparentHouse whichtheywereleavinginallprobability forever.

Wemustnotomittomentionthetruly kindandpaternalvisitofthelatevenerated ArchbishopMurray,whohadhithertobeen theirBishop.HisGracewasmuchaffected onseeingsomanyyoungladiescheerfully andasecondtimeleavingparents,friends, andnow,evencountry,andatthewordof obedience,going,theyknewnotwhereor withwhom,solelytocontributeintheir humblewaytothespiritualandtemporal welfareoftheirfellow-creaturesinadistant land.HisGraceingivinghisparting benediction,expressedthedeepestinterest intheirfuturelabors.

Onthe16thJuly-FeastofourLadyof MountCarmel-theinterestingceremonyof receptiontookplaceintheConventchapel oftheSistersofMercy,Perth,at4o'clock, p.m.HisLordshipDr.Griver,presidedon theoccasion,assistedbytheRev.T.Dooley. Thepostulantswhowereadmittedtothe whiteveilandhabitofreligionwereMiss AnneKenny,andMissMargaretWhite,the formertakingashernameinreligion,Mary Monica,thelatter.MaryRose.HavingpreviouslyspentsixmonthsintheConventon probation,theyhavenowenteredthe Novitiate.whichlaststwoyears.Attheend ofthisperiod,iftheyhaveprovedtheirvocationtobeacallfromGod,andperseveredin theiroriginalintentiontoconsecratethemselvesentirelytothedivineservice,they will,withtheconsentofthecommunity,be allowedtomaketheirfinalvowsandreligiousprofession.Thisistheusualcourse foraspirantstothereligiousstate-happyare thosewhoarethushighlyfavored. Theceremonyofreceptionisaveryinspre,siveone.Thepostulantappearsina bridaldress-thelasttimeforheritowearthe liveryiftheworldshehasrenounced.She V entersthechoirwiththecommunityinprocession.whilethehymn"0GloriosaVirginum,"isbeingsung.Shereceivesthewax candlefromthehandsoftheBishop,answers thequestionsproposed,accordingtocustom, andthenretirestoputoffhersecularattire, andassumethereligioushabit.Returning, clothedasareligious,sheisgreetedbythe beautifulantiphon,"Quaestista,"-"Who isthiscomingupfromthedesert,"&c.whichbeingfinished,shekneelsatthealtar toreceivethecincture,veilandcloakfrom theBishopandhandsthemtotheMother Superior,andisbyherinvestedinthem.The "RegnumMundi,"isthensoonafterentoned bythechoir,andatthecloseofthe "Eructavit,"thenoviceprostrates; the "VeniCreator"commences,theBishopand religiouskneelingtoinvoketheHolySpirit, anduniteinprayer.Thehymnandprayer beingconcluded,thenewlyreceivednovice isdirectedtoriseandisconductedtothe MothcrSuperior,towhomshekneels,and thelatterhavingembracedherasatokenof admissiontothesisterhood,sheproceedsto theotherSisters,andfinallyreturnstoher place.The"Eccequambonum"issung duringthispartoftheceremonytodenote theharmonythatexistsbetweenreligious, makingthemoneinheartandsoul-andunited bythestrongtiesofreligioussisterhood. Theceremonywasattendedbythefriends ofthenovices-elect,andanumberof"ChildrenofMary,"whoaregenerallyallowed theprivilegeofwitnessingtheentranceinto religionoftheirformercompanionsinthe Sodality.Withtheseexceptionstheceremonywas,asusual,private.Themusicwas mostsolemnandeffective,conductedby Messrs.Carnet,MollandO'CallaghanSister MaryFrancisandMissReganaddingtheir valuableassistance,Thevarioushymnsand antiphonsmayberespectivelynoticed,commencingwiththe"0GloriosaVirginum,"and continuingthroughout.Thealternateverses ofthe"Eructavit,"andreponse-"quern yid,quemamavi,inquemcredidi,quem dilexi,"aremosttouchinglybeautiful,and fewcanhearthemwithoutemotion.Thanks areduetothemembersofthechoirwhoso kindlydevotedtheirservicesontheoccasion. TheConventchapelisundergoingrepairs andwhenfinished,willbemuchimproved, andreflectgreatcreditontheworkmen.

ORDEROFMERCY.

Thehistoryoftheestablishmentofthe SistersofMercyinWesternAustraliaisof twofoldinterest.Thenarrativeofthe establishmentandspreadofthisesteemed OrderinAustralia,wouldinitselfbeofthe highestinteresttomany,butwhenitisrememberedthattheestablishmentofthe OrderofMercyinWesternAustraliais nearlycoevalwiththefoundationof CatholicityonthisContinent,andthatthe

theirparttowelcsmetheirnewBishop,by givingthreecheers.Allproceededtothe Church,asmallGothicbuilding,onlypartly built.Itwasatrulymissionaryone,forty feetlongandfiftywidethewallsunplastered,theroofunceiled,andtheskydistinctlyseenthroughtheshingles.This littlebuildinghadbeengotupbytheunited exertionsofthefewpoorCatholics,whodeservemuchpraiseforwhattheydid.In thistemple,rusticandpoorasitwas, theCatholicsusedtoassemble,previoustothenewarrivals,toassistatMass andVespersonSunday.Threeyearsbeforethistime,theCatholicshadwrittento theArchbishopofSydeny,theMostRev. Dr.Folding,prayinghisGracetosendthem apriesttoexercisehissacredministry amongthem,ablessingofwhichtheyhad beendeprivedsincethefoundationofthe colony.Incompliancewiththeirpetition, HisGraceimmediatelyappointedtwoPriests fromhisdiocese,who,ontheirarrivalfound thatitwouldbeimpossibleforthefew Catholicstosupportmorethanonepastor,or tocontributetotheerectionofchurches, schools,&c.TheRevd,Mr.Brady,(afterwardsBishop)tookhispassagetoEngland threemonthsafterleisarrivalinPerth, leavinghiscompanion:heRevd.Mr.Jonstenstoservethemission.ThisgoodclergymanwasaBelgian,andspokebutlittle English.Hehadmuchtosufferfrom povertyandprivations,besidesother things. Heborehistroubleswith admirablepatienceandcheerfulness,and constanlyassuredthepoorCatholicsthat hewouldratherstarveamonstthemthan leaveunlesscommandedtodosobytheMost Rev.Dr.Folding,whohadsenthim.He wasfaradvancedinyears,buthealthyand mostzealous.Duringthisintervalofmore thantwoyears.theRev.Mr.Brady,while inRomewasconsecratedBishopofPerth, andnowreturnedwithspiritualhelpsufficientforalargeCatholicpopulation. The10thofSeptemberfoundtheparty inLondonattheConventoftheirInstitute, Queen'sSquare,wheretheywereentertained bythecommunitywithtruesisterlyhospitalityuntiltheirdeparturewhichwasonthe 16th,whentheytooktheirplacesonboard thebarque"Elizabeth,"whichlayatanchor atGravesend.Thenewmissionariesbad partedwiththeMotherSuperiorofBaggot Street,onlyacoupleofdaysbeforetheir finalleaving,andthepartingwasapainful one.Itcanwithdifficultyberealizedin themindsofpersonsunacquaintedwiththe tiesofreligiousloveandgratitudewhich existinaregularcommunitybetweenthe MotherSuperiorandherspiritualchildren, theagonyoffeelingoftenfeltatpartingandonthepresentoccasionitwassevere indeed-amoreholy,disinterested,and generous-mindedsoulisseldomto befoundthanwasthatSuperior,thenow deceased andlamented Mrs.MaryCeciliaMarmion.Oneofher specialrequeststotheMotherSuperiorof thelittlebanddestinedforPerth,wasto omitnoopportunityofwritinghome,and herlastwordswereanassuranceofher assistanceandadviceundereves.),emergency; apromisewhichshefulfilledinamanner whichentitledhertobecalledafterwards thesecondprovidenceofthismissions. Duringthefirstthreedaysorboardthe vesselallpaidtheusualpenaltyofseasickness,butontheSunday,Masswascelebrated bytheBishop,andthepassengersmadean efforttoattendandafterafewdaysthey oncemoreenjoyedgoodhealhTheSisters weresoonabletoobserveanhorarium,or distributionoftimeasfollows-Theyrose at4o'clock,andassistedattheBishop's Massat44a.m.afterthissouseofthe priestsgenerallycelebrated,andtheSisters wentondeckandperformedotherspiritual duties.Breakfastat9,dinnerat3,andthe interveninghoursfilledupwithneedle-work, reading,writingandtranslating.Thepriests occupiedthemselvesbyusefullystudying, andgivinglessonstosomewhoneededthem, andtheforeignersendeavoringtolearnEnglish,sothevoyagewentoninapleasantand agreeableway.

Onthe24thOctober,thegoodbarque "Elizabeth,"wasfourmilessouthofthe lineonthe24thNov.,at12o'clock,she castanchorinTableBayattheCapeofGood Hope.TheRightRev.Dr.Griffeths, BishopofCaneTown,andoneortwoofhis clergy,verykindlycameonboardtovisit theSistersofMercy,HisLordshipinvited themtohishouse,buttheygracefullydedinedtheoffer.Onthe3rdDecemberFeastofSt.FrancisXavier-theanchorwas oncemoreweighed,andtheysetsailandsoon lostsightoftheshoresofAfrica.Asthe Christmasseasoncameon,theFeastsofour LordsNativityandCircumcisionwerecelebratedwithasmuchsolemnityascircumstancespermitted.TheprofessedSisters performedaretreatofthreedays,andonthe firstdayoftheuewyear,renewedtheirvows accordingtotheircustomwhenintheConvent.

Onthe7thJanuary,1846,landwasin sightatanearlyhourinthemorning,and afterMassandHolyCommunionallwenten decktolookatit.Theappearanceofthe coastwasverycheerless;itseemedlowand coveredwithtreeandthicketsdowntothe watersedgethesmallvillageofFremantle wasnotthenmorethanacollectionofpoor, uncomfortablelookingcottages,withbutfew ofabetterclass.Therewasnojetty,thereforenolandingplacebutabankofseaweed. Theanchorwascastthatevening,andthe nextmorningtheylanded.Theirfirstduty wastoreturnthemostferventthanksto Godforhiscareandmerciesdaringsomany dangersontheocean.TheBishopandhis party,21innumber,tookuptheirabodefor thatnightintheonlyhotelintheplace,and theSisterswereaccommodatedinaclean,comfortablecottage,keptbyanoldsettler. Masswascelebratedinitonthefollowing morning;andabout2o'clock,p.m.,the Sisterswereconducteduptheriver(Swan) inalargesailboat,arrivinginPerthabout 6p.m.Aconsiderablenumberofpersons hadassembledatthejetty,amongstwhom werethefewtheCatholicswhothenlived inPerth(notmorethanthirty),whodid

sionmovedontothesiteofthenewschoolhouse.andthereawaitedthearrivalofHis ExcellencyandLadyRobinson.whichtook placeafewminutesafterthehournamedfor theceremony.Atthistimetheplatfrom reservedfortheVice-Regalpartyandthe publicbodiesbeforementioned,withthe additionofsuchoftheirfriendsascouldbe accommodatedwithinthelimitedspace,was denselycrowded,andmusthaveformed quiteafeatureinthephotographicpicture ofthescene,whichweunderstandMr. Manningauoceededintaking.TheChairmanoftheCentralBoardofEducation(the Hon.A.O'G.Lefroy)havingescortedLady Robinsontothefoundationstone,whichbore asuitableinscription,andhavingpresented herLadyshipwiththesilvertrowelprepared fortheoccasion,andwhichiscertainlya creditablespecimenoflocalmanufacture, thenreadthefollowingaddress:-

"LadyRobinsonIhavebeendeputedto askyoutolaythefoundationstoneofthe PerthGirls'andInfanta'School-house.The wantofsuchabuildinghasbeenseriously feltforsomeyearsinthiscity,betweare nowhappytosaythattheinterestwhich GovernorRobinsonhastakeninpromoting theprogressofeducationinthecolonyhas enabledtheCentralBoardtoaccomplishthe goodworkofto-day.HisExcellencyhaving obtainedfromtheLegislatureagrantinaid towardstheerectionofthismuch-required school.Thisinstitutionhasagreatobject inview-theeducationofthechildrenbelongingtoalldenominationsofChristiansin thiscity,andIfeelsurethatyou.Lady Robinson,andallthoseinterestedinthe proceedingsofthisday,willunitewithme inthepsayerthatAlmightyGodmaybe pleasedofhisgoodnesstopourdownupon thisbuildingHisblessing.sothatitmayhe themeansofsendingforthmanywhowill shineasbrightornaments,intheirseveral positionsinlife,andbefoundinstrumental inadvancingthegloryofGod.Weregret thatyourladyshipissosoontopassfromus toanotherland,and,althoughwhenthere,a widersphereofusefulnessmaybeopento you,we,nevertheless,feelassuredthatyou willhereafterlookbackwithgratification onthepartwhichyouhavesokindlytaken inthisgoodwork.Inowpresentyour ladyshipwiththetrowel,forthepurposeof layingthefoundationstoneofthisbuilding."

Theceremonyoflayingthefoundation stoneofthenewGovernmentGirls'School, onTuesdaylast,attractedageneralandalmostenthusiasticinterestnotusually displayedintheinaugurationofGovernment undertakingsinthiscolony,Webelievethe ideaofmakingtheoccasionagrandjuvenile demonstrationoriginatedwithMr.Glyde, oftheDistrictBoardofEducation, andMr.J.'1'.Reilly,amemberofthesame Board,andthesegentlemencertainlydeservecreditforthezealandenergywith whichtheyorganizedandconductedtoa mostsuccessfulissuetheday'sproceedings. Asevidenceoftheharmoniousworkingof ourpresentsystemofElementaryEducation, anditscapacitytodrawwithinitsinfluence, withoutunduepressure,ourentirejuvenile population,thedemonstrationwasundoubtedlyamostgratifyingone.Under whatothersystemwouldithavebeenpossible,withouttheslightestcompromiseof principle,tohavemassedtogetherforsucha purposethechildrenofeverydenomination, aswellastherepresentativesofeveryshade ofpoliticalopinion? Wecansafelysay thatsuchadisplayofsocialunion,andwe mayadd,christianfellowship,wouldbeimpossibleonsuchanoccasioninmostofthe otherAustraliancolonies.Wehavealways beenopinionthattheElementaryEducation Actisthebestlegislativeworkofour"CollectiveWisdom,"andrequiresno"tinkering,"andwetrustourlegislatorswilltreasure upthelessonthatmaybelearnedfromthe surroundingsofTuesday'sceremony.We fancymoreoverthatwefindanendorsement ofouropinioninthegracefullysuggestive remarksofHisExcellencySirW.C.Robinson,atthecloseoftheday'sproceedings, whichwennwproceedbrieflytodescribe. Aboutoneo'clock,thepupilsofthevarious Governmentschoolsassembled,andprecededbytheband,andmarshalledinfirst rateorderbyMr.C.Trotter,principalofthe BovernmentBoys'school,marchedalongSt. George'sTerracetotherendevousappointedfortheAssistedschools.Thechildrenofthelatterhadmeanwhilebeen musteredandinspectedbytheManagers,the VeryRev,M.Gibney,V.G.,andMessr.J.T. ReillyandJ.A.Lucas.Tothenumberof over500theyjoinedtheotherschoolsatthe appointedtime,andtheunitedbodiesadvancedinprocessiondirecttotheTown Hall,intowhichtheymarchedinmostperfectorderandwhich,wemayadd,they completelyfilled.Thenfollowedarehearsal oftheNationalAnthem,whichwasherefar moreeffectivelyrenderedthanatthesubsequentalfrescoperformance.Attheconclusionoftherehearsal,thechildrenfiled outoutoftheFall,andtheorderof processionwasreformedinBarrackStreet inthefollowingorder:-Firtmarchedthe membersoftheLegislativeCouncil,followed bytheCentralandDistrictBoardsofEducation,andtheManagersoftheAssisted Schools.NextcametheBand,whichwas immediatelyfollowedbythevariousfemale schools,underthedirectionofMrs.Veale, theotherladyteachersoftheGovernment schools,andseveralyoungladiesfromthe Conventschools.Thenfollowedthepupils oftheseveralBoys'schoolsdirectedby Messsrs.Trotter,O'Callaghan,Cousins,Stout, andtheirassistantsthewholeformingthe mostastonishingassemblageofwell-dressed andwelldisciplinedchildrenyetseeninthis colony.Intheorderindicated,theprocea-

AttheconclusionofHisExcellency'sad-earlytoshowapersecutingspiritandasuchasthepreceding,Ihavereadnoticesin dress,thechildrenmarchedpasttheVice-desiretounitetheCatholicswiththeGreektheGolos,Russianofficialpaper,andother Regalparty,andhavingbeenregaledwithSchismaticalChurch,andtomakethemnewspapers,statingthatthemovementis bunsandbiscuitsreturnedinprocessiontoacknowledgetheemperor-amerelayman,spontaneous,andhasbeeneffectedwitha theTownHall,wheretheyweredismissedtowithoutanyspiritualpowerwhatever-aswildenthusiasmoffaithandloyalty.Itis theirrespectivehomes.Thusendedeveryplea-headoftheChurchacdrepresentativeofnowofficiallystatedthatamongtheresentspectacle,andofthegoodfeelingwhichChristuponearth.SilentpersecutionandmainderoftheUnitedGreeksintheGovernitelicitedonallsideswecanonlysayestepettyvexationswerealsaysatwork,butmentofLubin,numberingsomethingover perpetua, violentandopenpersecutionsburstoutafew300,000,alikemovementistobeexpected, yearsbefore1840,andhundredsofthousandswhichprobablymeansthatthemeasures ofCatholics,andespeciallyoftheGreekarebeingtakentosecureasimilarreYORKCATHOLICYOUNGMEN'SUnitedCatholics---thatis,ofCatholicswhosuit. usetheSclavoniclanguageandritesin

volved.Itwasobserved,ifwerecollect rightly,bythelearnedProtestantCave,that itisnotforthehonorofProtestantismto seektodiscreditconclusionsrestingonsuch stronghistoricaltestimony.Norcanthere beanydoubtthatthepresenceanddeathof St.PeteratRome,thoughhardlycapableof demonstration,wereattestedbyachainof evidencewhichinanyordinarycase,where noulteriorinterestswerethoughttobeat stake,wouldbeaccountedconclusive.Few writershavestatedtheargumentmore forciblyorimpartiallythanDr.Dollinger, whocannothesuspectedofanyunduepartialityfortheclaimsoftheRomanSee.Yet heconsiders"thefactthatSt.Peterworked inRomesoabundantlyprovedandso deeplyimbeddedintheearliestChristian historythatwhoevertreatsitasalegend oughtofconsistencytotreatthewl.oleof theearliestChurchhistoryaslegendary." Lmaybeworthwhilefirsttorecallthe salientpointsoftheargumentbeforeturningtothenewdiscoveriesofthelastfew weeks,whichservesomateriallytoconfirm it.Andherewewouldagainentreatour readers,ofwhatevertheologicalschool,to rememberthattheyareconcernedwithan interestingpointofecclesiasticalhistory, notwiththemeritsofrivalcreeds.

Thetwoquestionswhichhavebeenraised are,whetherSt.PeterfoundedtheChurch ofRome,andwhetherhediedthere.On thefirstpointithasbeenshownthatSt. Paul'slanguageinseveralpassagesofhis epistlesclearlyimpliesthatbeforehisfirst visittothemetropolisoftheancientworld aChurchhadalreadybeenfoundedthereby anApostle,andPeterismarkedoutbythe universaltraditionoftheRomanChurch,as thatApostle.Moreover,St.Peter'sfirst Epistleisdatedfrom"Babylon,"whichis thenamegiventoRomeintheApocalypse, andcannotwellhaveanyothermeaning here.ItcannotbeunderstoodoftheEgyptianBabylon,thestationofaRomanlegion. noryetoftheancientBabylonontheEuphrates,whichthereisnoshadowofground forsupposingthatStPeterevervisited,and whichisdescribedbyPlinyandStraboas "agreatdesert,"emptiedofitsinhabitants.

TheBabylonJewshadlongbeforeremoved toSeleucia,andwhenpersecutedtherefled toNeardaandNisibis,aswelearnfrom Josephus.

listdrawnupforQueenTheodolindinthe timeofGregorytheGreat-indicatesa sanctuarybetweentheViaNomentaneand theViaSaharaNuova,where"theseaton whichSt.Peterfirstsat"waspreserved. Nowthisexactlycorrespondswiththesite ofthe()straincemetery,andthusconfirms theprevioustraditionastothespotwhere St.Petersatandbaptized,variouslydesignatedthe()straincemetery,andcametsriunt majus,asbeingccevalwiththefoundation oftheRomanChurch.Bo!,theprocessof verificationhasbeenadvancedastagebeyondthis.FatherBosiohasdiscoveredin this()straincemeteryavaultandaspacious cryptwithanapseornamentedwithred letters,whichwere,however,to3fadedfor himtodecipher,inthemidstofwhichhe presumedthatanaltarhadoriginallystood. Rossi,aslongagoas1867,hadexpresseda differentopinioninhisBulletin°diCristiana Archeologia.Hethoughtitmostprobable thatthecentralspacewasoccupied,notby analtar,butby"thechairwhereinSt. Peterfirstsat,"whichwasseenbythe emissaryofQueenTheodolind,andthatthe redletterinscriptioncommemoratedthis augustmemorialandhelongedfortheday wLentheinscriptionmightbesuocessfully decipheredandinterpreted.Thewish appearsatlengthtohavebeengratified, thankstotheexertionsofayounger, butskilfulandpracticed,laborerin thesamefield,SignorMarianoArmellini. ThecommissionofSacredArehreology hasbeenbusilyengagedsince1873incarryingontheseinvestigations,withtheaidof MonsignorCrostarosa,owneroftheground underwhichtheOstriancemataryis situated.Theresultwasthediscoveryofa subterreneanchurch,whichisthusdescribed:-

St.Paul'swordsmakeitclear(Coliv.10; Philem.24)thatMark,whoisspokenofby St.PeterasinBabylonwithhim,wasactually inRomeatthetime.Ifwepassfromthe Spiritualevidences,DionysiusofCorinth antiIrenausinthesecondcenturymention PeterasthefounderoftheRomanChurch. ClementofRomereferstohismartyrdom there,andIgnatius,writingtotheRomans, remindsthemoftheexampleofPeterand Paulastheirfoundersandteachers. dwellsonthecircumstancesofhismartyrdom,asdidTertullianearlier,andthe RomanCaiusabout200A.D.,specifiedthe preciselocality.ThenthereisthetestimonyofPapiascitedbyEusebius,ofirenseus andoftheEbionatePreachingofPeter,a documentofthefirstcentury.Andthe timeoftheApostle'sfirstvisittoRome isapproximatelyfixedbythestatementof Suetonius,thattheJewswerebanished fromRomeA.D.49,onaccountoftheirraisingdisturbances"attheinstigationofone Chrestus,"whichisprobablyanallusionto thefirstformationofaChristiancommunity there.TheexilesreturnedtoRomeafter thedeathofClaudius,anditwasnottill about62thatSt.Paulcamethere.Tothis concurrenceofpositivetestimonymustbe addedthenegativeproofoftheentire absenceofanyadversetestimonyortradition.Itisstrange,tosaytheleast,that thelegend,ifsuchitbe,shouldhavethus remainedinundisturbedpossession.And nowisthetimetonoticetheremarkable accessionwhichhasoccuredtotheevidence duringthelastfewweeks.

Thenthewrenchcameofthesixteenth century.Shouldliesayit?Prideand sensualityevenattimeswithinthesanctuarysloth,wealthandworldlinessamongst aportionoftheclergyoccasionalcorruptionsandevenscandalsamongstreligious ordersignorance,andthatfiercebigotry whichfollowsitasashadow,aswellasthe wealthdailyspreadoutbeforetheireyes, offeredtothosewhohadbeencheckedby thespiritualpowerfortheirvices,andwho hateddiscipline,apretextforconfusingthe evildeedsofahandfulofmenwiththe guidingprinciplesoftheSupernaturalwhich thosementrampledunderfoot,andfor bringingaboutthatgreatland-slip,which whenonceeffectedbecamethecausefoendlessandmultiplyingrevolutionsinthereligiousworld.Thefirstlargeland-slip borewithinittheprincipleofitsownseparationfromtheheartoftheSupernatural; andaseverymaster-principleisthefaithfulparentofathousandphenomena,no soonerhadthatspiritualterritoryslipped fromtherock,andfallentoalowerlevel, thanitalsobecameaparenttoendlessother slips,tillwhatwasonceonesolidground, becamebrokenupintoathousandfragments. ForeachnewformoftheSupernasural,as itpartedwiththatwhichwaslogicallyits parent,leftbehinditsomepositivedoctrine, somemoreaxioms,sometime-honoreddisciplines,till,atlast,nothingremainbut nakedDeism,whichspeedilytravelstothose confineswheretheterrafirmaoftheSupernaturalmeetsanaltogetherdifferentelement -thewidequagmireoflevelMaterialism onthebitteroceanofheavingunbelief. Suchisthelogical,andindeedinevitable progressionintheworkingofaninitial principle,whichbeginsbyshowinganinsignificantcreakinanouterbuttress,and endsintheradicaldestructionofthatinto whichitswedgehasbeeninserted. Andhereitisimportanttoobservewhat asuperficialmindmightnotperceivethe fullbearingsof,namely,thatthefactof individualCatholicshavingabandonedthe practiceofreligionandtheprinciplesofthe Supernatural,is,inreality,nojustification, indeeddoesnotholdouttheslenderestcloak ofanexcusefortherepudiationofthose principlesthemselves,orforviolentlyjerkingreligion,asbyasuddentwist,fromthe onlylogicalbasisonwhichitcanstandwith anyhopeofremainingfirm.Toofferasa sufficientreasonfortramplingontheLaw thepaltry,nottosaycriminalexcusethata certainnumberofpersonshavenotobserved theLaw;tointroduceanarchyjustbecause certainmembersofsocietyhavenotbeen keptinorder,hasanunmistakabletouch aboutiteitheroflunacyorcunningand suggeststhesuspicionthatthosewhothus philosophizemusthavesomeselfishendof theirowntoserve.Andwhenthisisdone inmattersofreligiousprinciple;whenthe onlystableprinciple,thatistosay,

Authority,isrejected,andtheprincipleof confusionismadetotakeitsplace;thenit ismerelyaquestionoftimeandcircumstance howsoondestructionistofollow.Forwhen onceasystemofmoralityandfaith,which restrainspassion,curbspride,humblesman, directshislifewithinandhisactionswithout, isshovedfromthesquareblockmadlevel foundationofauthoritativeTruthtaught withunerringsecurity,ontotheslippery inclineoftheindividualjudgmentwhich changeswiththeweather,oneinevitableconsequencefollowstheballwillnotresttill itrestsattheverybottom.Asarule, whateverofpositiveteachingtheserolling fragmentsofChristianityniayhaveretained istheresultoftheirpreviousonenesswith theHeartoftheSupernatural.thatCityonthe mountaintop,with 'Hergodlikeheaderown'dwithspiritualfire, Andtouchingotherworlds' Thelandslips,eventhebiggestofthem, have,afterall,simplyfallenfromtheouter edgetheRockremainsallthemoreconspicuousfromitsveryisolation,andthe adamantinebasesonwhichitstowersare rearedarenowpartiallyunveiledbeforethe eye.AndifwhatMr.Gladstonesaysbe true,viz.,that"TheChristianthought,the Christiantradition,theChristiansociety, arethegreat,theimperialthought,tradition, andsocietyofthisearth,"thisearthowes thatcircumstancetotheCatholicChurch. Ifitbetrue,asanotherablewritersays, hat"ThegreatprinciplesofChristian moralityarenowsointerwovenwithour habitofthinking,thatweappealtothem nolongerasScripturalAuthorities,butas thenaturalsuggestionsofasoundjudgment;"ifsuchbethecase,weoweitt3the factofhumansocietyhavingbeensteeped intheBaptismoftheSupernaturalforover eighteenhundredyears.Denyitasmen may,letthembeeversomuchashamedof theirspirituallineagethephilosopheris notdeceived.Hetracestotheirsource, howeverdistant,theshallowwaters,and discoversthecausesofthestagnantpools andhefindstheinitialspringsofallofthem inthatfountainoflivingwaterswhichwelts uptowardseverlastinglifeintheCityofthe Saints.Thoughtheymayhavelosttheir vitalqualities,thoughtheymayhavegrown brackishor'corrupt,still,hetraceswhatremainsofgoodinthemtotheirtrueorigin andknows,thoughnowtheymayhavelost theirsavour,thattheyoncewerelimpid portionsoftheLivingSpring.limy amongstthemretainsomelineamentsof pastgreatness,somevestigesmoreorlessof theDivine()rignalandthoughmarried andmutilated,thoughbutchipsandCaress, hegazesonthemwithaffectionateregret; withaffection,inproportionastheystill retainsometokenoftheiroriginwith regret,onaccountofseeingsomuchbeauty tarnished,suchgracefulsymmetrydestroyed. TheCatholicthinkermustneedsfeel sympathyforeverythingwithinthecircleof theSupernatural-sympathyinproportion ashedrawshiseresfromthecircumference tothatcentrewhereinperfectlovelinessthe "MysticQueen"oftheSupernaturalholds hercourt. Andaftereighteencenturiesofbattlehas theGreatMotherofmenlosttheforceof herarm,theflashofhereye,andherhigh proverbialcourage?Doesshenotstill prosecutehersleeplesswork,herparamount missionofsavingsoulsdoesshenotstill "goaboutdoinggood,"andsanctifywith hergentlepresencehouseholdsandfamilies ofmenand,thoughfallenonanevilera, stillinfluencewithherelevating,purifying spirit,KingdomsandEmpires,andthewhole civilorderofmankind? Herbitterest enemiesareloudestinproclaimingthatshe stillexertsherpower,andnotinvain;that sheisnoantique,orbeeinamberbutan aggressiveLifeincontactwiththeforcesof themodernworld;androusedupallthe moretoenergy,justonaccountofthe violenceofopposition."Fromadormant, aswasthoughtdefeatedsuperstition,"says MarkPattison,"Catholicismhasbecomean aggressiveandmenacingforce.Itisbacked bymillionsofhereditarybelievers.Itis armedinSpain,mutinousinItaly,rapidly re-advancingtothere-conquestofFrance, andtakesthewholeforceofProtestantGermanytokeepitunder."Mr.Gladstone himselfassurestheworldthat"foiworking purposes"theCatholicChurchhasthe advantageoverallotherformsofreligion, andthatinthisrespecttheyhavesuffered lossbyleavingher.Sheispossessorhesays "ofbyfarthemostelastic,themostclosely knit,andthemosthighlycentralizedorganization,"whencomparedwiththedenoniinadons,whichareofmorerecentdate.This HeartoftheSupernatural,ofwhichthe VicarofChrististheSupremeCommander, hesays,is"organizedlikeanarmyinwhich eachorderisinstrictsubjectiontoevery otherorderthatisaboveit. A.thousand Bishopsareitsgenerals;sometwohundred thousandclergyareitssubordinateofficers thelaityareitsproletarians,Theauxiliary forcesofthisgreatestaolishmentarethe monasticorders.Andtheydifferfromthe auxiliariesofotherarmiesinthattheyhave ayetstricterdisciplige,andamorecomplete dependenceonthehead,thantheordiTtry soldier. Tothechainofanunbroken continitity,"hecontinues,"tothemajestyof animmensemass,totheenergyofaclosely serriedorganization,"theCatholicChurch, thisHeartoftheSupernatural,"adds anotherandamorelegitimatesourceof strength.Itundeniablycontainswithin itselfalargeportionoftheindividuallifeof Christendom.Thefaith,thehope,the charity,whichitwastheofficeoftheGospel toengender,flourishwithinthisprecinctin theheartofmillionsuponmillions. growupwithinit..Moreover,thebabesand suckliugsoftheGospel,thepoor,theweak, theuninstructed,thesimplesoulswhoin tranquilspheresgivetheirsoulandheartto God,andwhoseshadedfaithisnotscorched bytheburningquestionsofhumanthought andlife,thesepersonsareprobablyinthe RomanCatholicChurchbynomeansworse thantheywouldbeunderanyotherChristian system.Theyswellthemassofthemain body;obeythewordofcommandwhenit reachesthem;andtheyhelptosupplythe resourcesbywhichavastmachineryiskept inmotion."

So,accordingtothetestimonyofourable adversary,thisvastmachine,thismost elastic,closely-knitandhighlycentralized HeartoftheSupernatural,whichwecallthe CatholicChurch,isbeyondcomparison,inits toughstrength,initsdynamicpower,inits colossalsize,initsadaptationtothegigantic workplacedforittodo,superiortoevery other.Asshehasbeenfurcenturiessois shestillinthisnineteenthcentury,themainspringoftheSupernatural,thechiefantagonist,theLeader,againstwhichthefoul monstersofthefuturewillhavetothrow themselves,iftheywouldoverrun,and ravagethisfairworldwhichGodhasgiven us,anddarkentheheavenswiththeir poisonousbreath.

ThesecretforceofthisHiddenSpringis identicalinkindwiththatwhichenergises inthecentre-souloftheindividualman.For theChurchlivesandactsfromaDivineand Supernaturalimpulse,fromwhichproceed thoserestrainingprincipleswhichmaintain theworldin'sederandthoserenovating stimulantswhichliftsocietyupto,andfix itonthebasisofSupernaturalfacts.It consistsinherpossessingacompleterevelationofsupernaturalTruth,andaneverabidingandintelligibleVoiceinitsinterpretationandapplication,bothontheplainof intellectualvision,andthatofpractical action;itconsistsinherbeingthefountainheadfromwhichproceedsevendistinct channelsofsupernaturallightandenergy, bymeansofwhichman'sreasoniseoniforted bythegiftofFaith,andhisspiritemboldenedtoloveandhope;itconsistsin eachorderofthesocialhierarchyreceiving itsownpropergiftandgracefortheright fulfilmentofitsavocations;sothatall inankindmay,inthesteadylightinthe permanentglowoftheSupernatural,be urgedfromwithinandattractedfromwithout, "Toscorndelights,andlivelaboriousdays" inworkingoutitshigherdestiny.ItconsistsinthefactofthatGreatMotherknowingherownmindthoroughly,andintime; ofperil,andofmentalconflictespecially, boldlyandemphatically,withoutrespectof personsorpowers,declaringit,andanathematizingthewrong;andinherpossessing aSupernaturalinstincttoplaceTruthand Goodnessbeforeexpediencyandsuccess; andinheralmostDivinepenetrationin seeinganenemythroughanymask,andof pickingoutandrejectingsuchprinciples, howeverplausible,which,seemingtobe._ doingthereverse,reallytellagainstheir. Shebideshertime,anddoesherwork,and offersherantidotestothepoisonsofthe age;andknows,asnoothercan,howto girdherselfupforthecontest,andlaunch herselfoutonthefoe.Hersecretforce consistsinhersternauthoritativeinsistence thatthose,itmattersnotwhotheybe,who disobeytheLaw,whetheraswrittenonthe heartorgivenintheGospels,will,ofa surety,iftheydieimpenitentandinmortal sin,perisheverlastinglyandthatthose,on thecontrary,whomakeitthegreatobjectof theirlifetofulfilthewilloftheirCreator', anddieinastateofgrace,willberewarded foreverwithexquisitedelights.It,moreover,consistsinherimpressingonmanan ideaofhisrealcharacterandcondition,so thatheknowshimselfashereallyisand hasanabidingconsciousnessofhisown personaldebility,andbearseveraboutwith himasenseofsinandaconsequenttemper ofdependenceandhumilityhecomesto realize,throughherteaching,theideaof guiltandofrepentance;andbeginsto practise,notmerelythosemoremasculine virtueswhicharesummedupinthefour cardinalcharacteristicsofanobleandwell balancedmind,butthoseothervirtuesalso, especiallyconnectedwiththeGospelRevelation,andemphaticallyshownforthinthe lifeoftheIncarnatesuchashumility, patience,sweetness,gentleness,self-repression,forgetfulnessofselfandthoughtfulness ofothersallwhichvirtues,whenexhibited intheirfairestbloom,representtothe world,menandwomenofthehighesttype, andofthemostexquisitesymmetryofsoul. TheseflowersoftheSupernaturalspringup inacarnalworldfromtheHiddenSpringof aSupernaturalroot,andredeemhumanlife fromutterdesolation.Suchmenandwomen asthese,sweetenearth'sbitternessand, whilstcastingahaloofsofteninglightinto thesaddestrecessesofhumanity,andsaving thefallenfromdespairbytheirangeliclove andgentleness,dwellhere,notasthePagans did,notascastingtheirlotwithearth,but asmenmakingriseofitasamany-sided instrumentfortheirownperfection,asa many-rangedladderwhichtheydailyhaveto climbtowards "ThatGod,whichllres'andloves; One(Sod,onelaw,oneelement, Andonefar-offdivineevent Towhichthewholecreationmoves."
