Russianincapacityhasbeencuriously illustratedoflatebythecontriversofboth theAsianandEuropeanplansofcampaign. Theirstrategy,suchasitis,istooevidently traditional,exposingthemtodelays,cliffculties,andcalamitiesinnumerable.The resulthasbeen,certainlyinAsia,theconspicuousbreakdownofthatbrazenidolwith theclayfeet-theRussianarmy.It mobilisedinNovember,1876,andentered RoumaniaonApril23,1877.Itcrossedthe DanubeintotheDobrudschaonJune23 intoBulgariaonJune27.TheMuscovite forceontherightbankoftheDanubeatthe presentmomentisabout180,000men,of which50,000areintheDobrudscha,andthe restinBulgaria,betweenSistovaand Tirnova.TheDobrudschaforceisstuck fastinaparticularlyunhealthycountrybetweenBabadaghandMatch*ontheeastern sideofTrajan'sWall,unabletoadvancefor wantofsuppliesofallsorts.TheBulgarian forcehadbeensimilarlysituatedina devastateddistrict,ofwhicheventhewells aredry.Itsufferedtwosharprepulsesat Biela,andhasoccupiedTirnova,whereit metwithnoresistance.Thisispositivelyall itdidinafortnight.

WAR.

Weareinclinedtobelievethatavery largenumberofpersonsswearandcurse almostinadvertentlyandwithoutreference tothemeaningofwhattheysay,if,indeed, theyarefullycognisantofthat,andforsuch asystemofperfectlyinnocentoathsand curseswouldbequiteasefficaciousasthat nowinvogue.

slangandwordsmis-need.Justaswhen personsfeeldeeplyoraremuchoutoftemper, theyexperienceacravingtosaythingsthe reversetopolite,sowhentheydesiretobe funnytheyappeartobeunabletoresistthe Nolanguagecanpossiblydescribetheinclinationtoallowtheirsportivetendencies superbsceneryofto-day'sjourney.ItfartobetraythemselvesintermswhichareretranscendsanythingIeversaworconceivedmarkablefortheireccentricity.Oneis, ofwoodlandorofriverscenery.Itisthetherefore,justifiedincomingtotheconchpartoftheDanubewherethewatersbreakelusionthatourvocabularyofunexceptionfromthegreatbasinofHungarythroughthealemodesofexpressionisweakandunmountains.WhenwefirstleftOrsovatheequaltogreatoccasions.Yetwhenweturn hillswereonegreenwildernessofmassivetoexaminethewordswhichmostfolkemploy, andunbrokenfoliage,andtheviewsuptheirrespectiveofthosewhichtheyareprivivalleyswereverysweetindeed.ButsoonJegedbyrecognisedlexicographerstocall hugeandshadowycliffsbegantoshowintouse,wefindthatmostareeitherprofane, themselvesamongthewoods,onceortwicevulgar,indecent,orliterallywithoutany theDanubepressedhiswatersthroughmeaningatall.Manyaman,ifheisangry awfulwallsofsheerprecipice.AtfirstIwithanenemy.willcallthatenemya thoughtitliketheRhine,onlymuch,very"scoundrel"byprefacingthewordscoundrel muchsuperior,becauseofthewoods,insteadby&descriptiveadjectivewhichwedonotfeel ofmiserable,tame,formalvineyards;butcalledupontoprint.Yetitmaybepointed presentlythemagnificenceandalmostfear-outthat,inthemajorityofcasesthemanis fulgrandeurofthescenerydrovetheRhinetotallyadifferentsortofscoundrelfrom utterlyoutofmythoughts.Thewoodswerewhatheissaidtobe.andthatnorealforce principallydeciduoustreeswithanimmenseisaddedtothechargeagainsthimbythe profusionofwalnut,andtheywereallmannerinwhichitisembellished.Again, mattedtogetherwithwildvines,clematis,ifsomeindividualsdesiretobeparticularly andverylargewhiteconvolvulus,whilebe-emphatic-iftheywishittobeunderstood tweenhisbankstheriverwrithedandthattheyarefullydeterminedtodocertain boiledoverbarsofrocks,effectuallyfor-things-theirIwills,lamgoingtos,"&c.,are biddingallnavigation.Butnowthecliffsheadedbysortsoffearfulpropheciesofwhat receded,andtherecamesomemilesofwillhappentothemiftheyfailtodowhat incessantwood,withbeautifulvalleys,theyareundertakingtoperform.Buttheprothroughwhosewoodygatesweobtainedex-pheciesarepalpablyabsurdandevidently quisiteglimpsesupthemountainousglens.haveItomeaningsofarasthosewhomake OneinparticularIremember,ofconsummatethemareconcerned,inspiteofthegross loveliness.ItwasontheServianshoremannerinwhichtheyareput.Casesin andfarinlandthereroseahugemountain,pointmaybemultiplied.Ifwitsofthe inshapelikeacrouchinglion,andtheminororderdesiretobejocosewhentheyare valleybroadenedout,andleftthemountainabouttotaketheirdeparture,theywillinstandingaloneagainstthesky.Thencameformyoutheyaregoingtomizzle,slope, alargesealikebay,withaServianvillagehookit,sked-daddle,"&c.Youngladies, andchurchonatongueofgreenfields,Thewhosewishitistobethoughtjolly,will broadriverwentbygently,wheelingapplytothesweetestthingstheepithet solemnlyinglossyeddies.Itwasasceneof"awfully,"andtothemostamusing perfectloveliness.Notafeaturecouldbematterstheadjective"fearful."Yetthereheightenedorimproved.Thencamethesuitoftheeffortsofsuchpersonsastheseis cliffsagain,nolongerwhiteandhoary,butthattheyrendermanyoftheirspeechesimadeepmottledred.ForthenexthourIteespossibleofbeingsatisfactorilyanalysed,and wellnighbesidemyself;haditbeentheexposethemselvestotherebukeofdistimeofmanycoloredautumn,insteadofcriminatingcritics.Themisfortuneisthat brown-leavedJune,withitsheavygreen,Ithecriticsthemselvesarenotthemselves shouldhavelostmysenses.Redcliffs,blamelessinthematter.Plain"Iwills" maskedininfinitelyvariousdegreesbyfoli-and"Iwonts,"andintelligent,ifbold, age,orstandingabruptlikewalls,orshoot-statementsoffactsfailingtosatisfythem ingupintospiresandpinnacleslikecastles,justastheyfailtosatisfylesssuperior hererecedingfromtheview,therethrowingmortals.Unhappily,thereisnotmuchto themselvesforwardandshuttingthewatershopefrommereeducationinthismatter,for upintoanarrowturbulentrapidtheseeducationsimplyseemstohavetheeffectof werethefeaturesofthescenery.Tomakingmenswearby"Jove,"by"gum," describethemisquiteimpossible.Atlastandby"jingo,"inthedrawing-room,and weturnedfromthecliffsandsawthedeep-byswearingbysacredthingsandbythings woodedhillsaboveDrenkovabackedbythethereverseofsacredwithadditionalzestwhen deep,dullcrimsonofastormymeet,andtheygoabroad wearrivedabsolutelyweariedwiththe strengthoftheimpressionsmadeuponusby thescenery.Suchaglnriousanddivine minglingofgrandeurandlovelinessof nature'ssmilesandfrowns,asdecksthe royalDanubeallthisday'sjourney,Inever sawinmylifeandIbelieveIshallnever forgetthesilentastonishmentinwhichI travelledformanyhours.Ialmostenvied thebirdswhowerefreetodropanywherein theleafywilderness,orontherockyledges, ortosuspendthemselvesintheairoverthe middleoftheDanube.-'TheLifeand LettersofFrederickWilliamFaber,D.D.," byJohnEdwardBowden.

PIUSIXANDTHEDAUGHTEROFTHE GOVERNORGENERALOFALGERIA.

Wehavealreadyannounced,says Galignani,themarriageofMdlle.Chanzy, daughteroftheGovernor-GeneralofAlgieria, withM.Crepy,sonoftheTreasury-PayerGeneralintheArdennes.TheSoirrelates acuriousdetailoftheceremony.Theyoung couplesignedthemarriageregisterwitha penwhichhadoncebelongedtoPiusIX. WhenquiteachildMdlle.Charms,was presentedonedaytotheSovereignPontiff byhermother,"HolyFather,"saidthe littlegirl,withthesimplicityofherage,"I shouldliketotakeawaywithmeasouvenir ofRome."Thebenevolentoldmansmiled attheinfantinedemand,andtakingupa penlyingonthetablenearhim,presentedit tothechild,afterblessingit,andsaid, "Takethis,monenfant,itwillservetosign youractofmarriage."

STRONGLANGUAGE.

Notafewpeopleseemtoexpresswhat theyfeelinordinarylanguage,andeventhe moststrait-lacedaretemptedoccasionallyto usewhatmaybetermedexcrescencesof speech.Theseexcrescencesofspeechtake manyandvariousforms.Amongtheleast refinedsectionofthecommunitytheyassume theshapeofoathsandcurseswhileamong thebetterclassofpersonstheyadoptthatof

Thelifecostofwarisasubjectthathas receivedjustnow,notinappropriately,a mostimpressiveillustrationorappraisement. AstatisticalaccountofthePrussianskilled andwoundedduringtheFranco-German War,accordingtotheMedicalExaminer, hasbeenpublishedatBerlinbytheMessrs. Fischer.Thetotalnumberofcombatants, eitherkilledorwounded,amountedto88,867, comprising4,658officersand84,209men.Of theofficers879,or18.8percent.,werekilled onthespot;1,447,or31percent.,were seriouslywounded1,979,or42.4percent., wereslightlywounded;and353,or7.8per cent.,werereturnedsimplyaswounded.Of the3,779woundedofficers,495diedsubsequentlyfromtheeffectsoftheirwounds. Thewounds,takeninconnectionwiththe instrumentsproducingthem,were-56,062 fromgun-shots5.084fromshells218from sabres595frombayonets236fromfragmentsofstone,earth,&c.(thrownupby shells);in2,598thenatureofthecausewas notreturned.Thefollowingnumbersgivea goodideaofthepartsmostexposedtoinjury fromgun-shots.Itseemsstrangethatthe headshouldhavebeenstruckmorefrequently thanthechest;-Head,17.4percent.arm, 131;thigh,10-6;chest,8.8;hand,8.1 knee,2.7;back,2'3.Thefactthatthe casesofsabre-wounddidnotexceed218 wouldseemtoindicateasparinguseof cavalryduringthewar.

ECHOESFROMTHEVATICAN.

Humanbeingsaresoconstitutedthat thereareoccasionsintheirliveswhenthey experienceanalmostirresistiblecravingto stepoutsidethelimitsoflegitimatespeech. Itis,therefore,welltobetoleranttowards slangandmereverbalextravagances,since itisprettyclearthattheyareoccupyinga placewhichifnotfilledbythem,wouldbe filledbysomethingagreatdealworse.But societygenerallyerrsgreatlyinbeingindulgenttothosebeingswhorecklesslyswear andcurse,notwithstandingthattheyhave beenwelleducated,andcanactlikegentlemenwhentheyarepleasedtocondescend todoso.Asitis,suchpersonsseemto imaginethat,exceptwhentheyarein companywithladies,theymayfreely indulgeintermsofspeechwhichwoulddisgraceaLondoncostermongeroraLiverpool "rough."Norisitaltogetherunreasonable thattheyshouldgetsuchabeliefintotheir heads.Theyarenotshunnedonaccountof thebadlanguagetheyuse;providedthat theyhavegoodclothesontheirbacks,and plentyofmoneyintheirpocketsnoone venturestointimateopenlythattheyare ungentlemanlybecauseineverydozenwords thattheyspeaktheycommitagrossoffence againstgoodtaste Iftheoffenderwere cutnowandthen,ifhewereshownthatthe useofobjectionabletermswerenolonger consideredagentlemanlyaccomplishment, hemightbeledtoreformation,whichhewill neverbesolongasheisnotonlytolerated butpracticallyencouraged.Heonlyneeds tobecoercedtoreform-outwardly,atany rate,-anditthereforerestswithothersas muchashimselftoseethathedoesso. Cursingandswearinghavebeenbanished fromthedrawing-room.Theyshouldnow bebanishedfromthoseplacesinwhichmen congregatetogether.Notuntiltheyhave willthepublictoneandthepublichate becomewhattheyoughttobe.-Pberal Review.

AboutnoSovereigndoestheworldknow somuchasabouttheHolyFather.His every-daylifehasbeenagainandagain described.Howhistimeisportionedout, hourbyhour,theworldhasbeenrepeatedly informed,Buteventhenon-Catholicpublic nevertiresofhearingalloveragainabout thediurnalroutinemarkingthepureand venerablelifeofhisHoliness.Asaffording ourreadersthelatestevidenceofthis,though theparagraphsubjoinedwillyiedthemnot oneparticleofnewinformation,hereiswhat isnowgoingtheroundofthenewspapers, afterappearinginsuchorgansastheParis FigaroandthePallMallGazette:-"In winterasinsummerthePoperisesat6a.m. Hethenspendshistimeinprayeruntil8 a.m.,whenMaasiscelebratedinhisprivate chapel.Atnineo'clockhebreakfasts,and afterwardsopenshiscorrespondenceand transactsbusinesswithhissecretary,CardinalSimeoni.Hethengivesprivatereceptionsinhislibraryuntilabouthalf-past twelve,whenthesemi-publieaudiences begin.Atthesedeputationsarereceived andaddressesareread.Theseconcluded, thePope,attendedbythoseamongthe cardinalswhoaremoreintimatewithhim, walksinthegalleriesorsometimesinthe garden,untilhalf-pastone,whenhedismisseshissuite,andattendedbyMonsignor Reed,hismajordomo,readstheofficeofthe day.At2p.m.thePopedines,afterwards takingasiestaforhalfanhour.Therecital ofthebreviaryoccupieshimtillhalf-past four,whenhevisitstheHolySacramentin hischapel,andafterwardswalksagainin thegalleries,or,whentheweatherishot,is carriedintothegarden.Onreturningheis againoccupiedreadinghiscorrespondence untilsunset,whentheprivatereceptions recommence,andarecontinueduntilnine o'clock.Afterwardsacircleisformedby theinmatesoftheVatican,andgeneralconversationiscarriedonforashorttime,when thePopepartakesofafrugalsupperand retirestohischamber,"

MostoftheMinisterswhoconductand controlpublicbusinessarecomparatively speakingnowhere,saysthePallMall,ata coronation.TheLordChancellor,theLord PrivySeal,andtheLordPresidentofthe Council,indeed,arevisible.Butthe:importantmenofthedayaretheLordHigh Steward,theLordHighConstable,theLord GreatChamberlain,andtheEarlMarshal; theFirstLordoftheTreasury.theChancellor oftheExchequer,theFirstLordofthe Admiralty,andalltheSceretariesofState areforthenoncelinobscurity.Theoffices ofthe@relitChamberlainandtheEarl Marshalarehereditary,andconsequently alwaysexist,theonenowheldjointlyby LadyWilloughbydeEresbyandLordCholmondeley,andtheotherheldbytheDuke ofNorfolk.ButtheofficesoftheHigh StewardandHighConstableofEnglandare inabeyance,andareonlytemporarilyrevived,thefirstforstatetrialsandcoronationsandthesecondforcoronationsalone. InScotlandbothofficesarehereditarilyrepresented; thePrinceofWalesisthe hereditaryStewardandLordErrolisthe hereditaryHighConstableandinIreland LordShrewsburyisHighSteward.Atthe coronationofWilliamIV.andofher Majesty,theDukeofHamiltonwasLord HighSteward,andtheDukeofWellington wasLerdHighConstableatthecoronations ofGeorgeIV.,WilliamIV.,andtheQueen. TheLordGreatCamberlainandtheEarl Marshalcarryoutthearrangementsforthe coronationbetweenthem,andallfourgreat officersattendtoreceivetheregaliafromthe DeanandChapterofWestminsterinthe JerusalemChamber.Theretheyarelaidout onatable,andarehandedonebyonebythe LordChamberlainoftheHouseholdtothe LordHighConstable,andbyhimtothe LordGreatChamberlain,whodeliversthem severallytothepersonageswhoaretohave themin LordGreatChamberlainhastheprivilegeofselectinganypeer hepleasestocarrytheswordofState,and heusuallychoosesthePrimeMinisterifhe isapeer.LordMelbournecarrieditatthe coronationoftheQueen,asLordBeaconsfielddidtheotherdayattheopeningof Parliament.Buttherestoftheregaliais notattheLordGreatChamberlain'sdisposal. InthereignsofEdwardII.andEdwardIII. thisservicewastoberenderedforthemanor ofFarnham-RoyalinBuckinghamshire,then heldbytheLordsFurnival.-AtthecoronationofHenryIV.itwasdischargedbySir ThomasNeville,LordFurnivalbycourtesy inrightofhisdeceasedwife,theheiressof theFurnivals,andthroughthemarriageof hisdaughterandheiressthemanorcameto theEarlsofShrewsbury,whoexchangedit forWorksoponlikeconditionsoftenure withtheKing.AtthecoronationofJames II.,theservicewasclaimedbyLordThomas Howard,brotheroftheseventhDukeof Norfolk,theHowardshavingderivedthe manorofWorksopfromthemarriageofthe heiressoftheseventhEarlofShrewsbury withthethirteenthEarlofArundel,and hisco-heirsareLordStourtonandLord Petre.AtthecoronationoftheQueenthe DukeofNorfolkfoundheraright-hand gloveandsupportedherrightarmwhile sheheldthesceptre.Allthepresentregalia, bytheway,weremadeforCharlesII.,excepttheanointingspoon-theoldregalia havingbeensoldduringthe3,ebellion.

AfewyearsagoaplaycalledTheTicket ofLeaveManachievedanextraordinarysuccessataLondontheatrebecauseaclerkwho hadembezzled£800restoredthree-fourths

oftheplunderafterwitnessingtheper, formanceofthepiece.Thefactwasplacarded allover.thewallsofLondon.Aparallel casehasjustbeenenactedbyapoorcountry priestofLorraine,withoutanysimilarmice ensceneorblowingoftrumpets.About sixteenmonthsagoanarchitectfromFrankfortcalledHercknerlostapocket-bookcontaining£450inbanknotesatSaargemiind inLorraine.Allsearchesandoffersofrewardremainedfruitless.Somelittletime ego.however,theburgomasterofavillagein LorrainecalleduponHerrHerckneronbehalfoftheparishpriest,andhandedhim thepocket-bookwith£420init.Itappears thatthepriesthadlearnedintheconfessional fromoneofhisparishionersthathehad foundthepocket-bookandspentthemissing £30;whereuponthepriestinducedhimto returntheremaindertoitsrightfulowner. Inthiswayapoorcountrypriestaccomplished,withoutanyshowandatnoexpense, whattheGermanpolicewithalltheirposse ofdetectiveshadfailedtodo.Butthefact hasnotbeenplacardedonanywalls,none buttheCatholicpapersofGermanyhave spokenofit,andoneofthese,theLiborius Byte,hasbroughtittoourknowledge.

TheRev.gentlemansaidhecouldnot, however,havedonewhathadbeen effected,wereitnotfoitheself-sacrifice anddevotionofthegoodSistersof Mercy,who,sincetheiradventtothe Orphanage,haddonesomuchtorender theInstitutionsosatisfactoryinevery way,andtomaketheorphanchildren comfortableandhappy.TheSistersof Mercy,theRev.gentlemansaid,devotedmorethanparentalcaretothe trainingandeducationoftheorphan children,andthereweremanyofthem thenpresentwhowerequiteoldenough tounderstand,andtoappreciatetoo, howmuchtheyowedtheSistersof Mercyforallthekindnessandattention theybestoweduponthem,andhe sincerelytrusted,thatinafterlife,they wouldmanifestbytheireonduetand goodbehaviourinsociety,thattheyhad profitedbysuchgoodinstructionsand examples,astheydailyreceivedfrom theSistersofMercy.TheRev.gentleManconcludedaveryinteresting speech,byagainthankingthechildren fortheirhandsomeaddress,andwishing themall,ahappyandpleasantday. shorttime,amusementsandgamesof variouskindswereintroduced,andinto whicheveryonepresent,botholdand young,enteredmostlitartily.Dnrieg theday,abundanceofgingerbeer,and creaturecomforts,intheshapeofbuns, sandwiches,cakes,sweets,&c.,ssere distributedamongthelittleones,anda repast,ofamoresubstantialnature,providedforvisitors.Theamusements werekeptupwithunabatedardour untilnearlysundown,whenthewhole companyretnrnedtotheOrphanage, wherehavingpartakenoftea,'proceeded at8o'clocktotheSchool-room,which badbythattimebeenneatlyfittedup asatemporarytheatre,forthepurpose ofwitnessingtheperformanceofthe amusingplayentittled"BoxandCox." ThecharactersweretakenbyOrphan Beers,andsome:residentsofthe Orphanage,andwearegladtosay,that thepiecewaswellrendered,andgave evidentdelighttoeveryonepresent. Theplayhavingbeenconcluded,the evening'samusementwasfurtherenenhanced,bytheperformanceonthe harmoniumbyMr.Cartierofsomeexcellentmusic,andthesingingofsome capitalsongsbyMr.J.T.Reilly,Mr. O'Callaghan,Mr.Artlagh,andseveral oftheOrphanBoys.AtacomparativelylatehourtheVERYREV.M. GIBNEYrose,andagainthankedthe OrphanBoys,forthehappymannerin whichtheyhadmarkedhisFeastday, andalsothevisitors,fortheirkindness indoingsomuchtoaddtotheamusementoftheevening.TheRev.gentlemanalsoparticularlymentionedhow muchtheInstitutionwasindebtedto theSuperioress,SISTERMARYFRANCIS JOSEPH,whohadbroughtallher knowledgeandexperienceinthetrainingofchildren,toforwardandpromote thewell-beingoftheSuhincoOrphanage.TheRev,gentleman'sspeech broughttoaconclusiononeofthemost pleasantandagreeablegatheringsthat havetakenplaceattheOrphanage,and nodoubt,Wednesdaythe26th September,willbelongandpleasingly rememberedbytheOrphanChildren.

RELIGIOUSINTOLERANCEAND PERSECUTIONINGERMANY.

NOTHING,inmoderntimes,hascaused suchprofoundregrettotheCatholic world,asthelongcontinuedandbitter persecutiontowhichtheCatholicsof Germanyhavebeensubjectedto,since theenactmentoftheFeicklaws.Prelatesofthehighestdignityin theChurchinGermanyhavebeen ruthlesslydrivenfromtheirSees,their propertyconfiscated,andtheirpastoral chargescattered,Priests,whoseonly crime,wasaconscientiousadherenceto thefaithoftheirfore-fathershavebeen fined,imprisoned,andbanished,and religiousorders,whichwerethepride andtheboast,oftheircountry,have beensupressedbythetyrannicaledicts ofthepersecutingEmperor,whonow directsthedestinies01theGerman Empire.Thelawswhicharenow afflictingtheChurch,andtheCatholics inGermany,haveneverbeenexecuted indiabolicalcrueltybyevenNero, Domitan,orJulian.Thepresent "SummusEpiscopus,"oftheNational ChurchofGermany,hassuceededin puttingintooperationlawswhichare asluruponanynationwhichlaysthe slightestciderstocivilization,andwill remainafoulstainonthecharacterof theEmperorhimself.Onlyafewyears ago,andreligiousdissensionwasunknowninGermany.Protestantsand Catholicslivedinpeaceandharmony, andonlyrivalledeachotherinthe interchangeofmutualcourtesyand forbearance.Itistrue,polemicaldisquisitionswerenotunknown,butpoints ofdifferenceinreligionwerecalmlyand dispassionatelydiscussedinphamplets andbooks.Itisonlywithinthepast fewyears,thatithasbeenthoughtin GermanythataCatholiccouldnutbea goodcitizen,andthatdevotionto Catholicism,wasopposedtocivicvirtue.TheEmperorWilliam,likepersecutorsofold,hascalleduponhisCathoe liesubjectstoobeyhislawsandedicts, butasweallknow,thatratherthan forfeittheirallegiancetoChristand IllsChurch,theGermanCatholicshave heroicallysufferedpersecutions,and

trials,whichforbrutalityandrefined cruelty,onthepartoftheEmperor's minions,haveneverbeenexceeded.

"Untilyesterday,'saysarecentwriter, "itwasasclearlyunderstoodinGermanyas elsewherethatthe,'atholicChurchisthe mostpowerfulcomer,ativvelementinhuman society.EvenFredericktheGreat,though hewasaslittleaChristianasJulianthe Apostate,receivedandprotectedtheJesuits, becauseashissagacityperceived,menwho werealwaysthefirstvictimsofrevolutionary madnesscouldhalenothingincommonwith thosewhosubvertkingdoms.Radetkzy madethesameobservationinourownday tohisimperialmaster,whohadthegood sensetoactuponit.Evenhereticalprinces, andGovernments,consultingonlytheirown interests,respectedthelibertiesofthe ChurchinGermany,andthoughttheyfound theirprofitindoingso.Catholicsheldhigh officeintheState,aridsomeofthem,includingatleastonewhoisnowinprison, werepersonalfriendsoftheKing.Itis nottheywhohavechanged.Theyaretodaywhattheywereyesterday,andwillbe to-morrow.Inordertomakethemappear disaffected,whoseloyaltyhadneverbeen questionedbefore,itwasnecessarytoinvent newlaws,inC)nteniptoftheconstitution, whichtheirframersknewthatChristians couldnotobey.Theartificewassuccestful, asithatbeenonmanyotheroccasions. WhentheservantsoftheEvilOne,wishto provoketheservantsofGodtorevolt,they knewhowtodoit.Isittrue,"said Nalmelioilenosor,"0,Sidrach,Misaeh,and AWhin:ism"whowerethedisloyalsubjects ofhisday,"thatyoudonotworshipmygods, noradorethegoldenstatuethatIhadset up?"Quitetrue,theyreplied;andthenhe castthetaintothefisryfurnacewithmuch damagetothosewholaidholdofthem,but noneutalltothetnselves."Obeythe Emperor,"wedtheRomanPrefectstothe primitiveChriatians,"andsacrificetothe nationalgods."NonpossumasWastheir tranquilnitswerastheprccientpersecutor knewitwouldbe.TheintellettualJapaeses, strewedmissesonthegroundinorderto ettchthedissipleeofSt.FrancisXavier. anItheirtrapalsowasextrtraelyeffective. TheGermanpersecutionhasnoteventhe meritOfnovelty.Itproposestoconvictthe Catholicsofdisloyalty,andinordertodoit. isobligedtoimitatethelegislationofthe BabylonianKing,ortheJapaneseDaimio OfcoursetheGermanChristians,hitherto themostloyalcitizensoftheland,donot oneythenewlaws,andwoulddierather thandosowhichisexactlywhatthe authorsofthoselawsintended.Theywill notworshiptheGoldenstatuewhichthe Kinghassetup,comewhatmay,and,like Nahuchodonosor,heis"filledwith thecountenanceofhisface"ischanged against"theverymenwhowireoncehis associatesandcounsellorsForthisreason, justthevenerableministersoftheMost nigh,truerfriendsoftheirKingandcountry thatPrinceBismarckandDr.Flack,languish inprison,wheretheyceasenottocry,like thecaptivesoftheBabylonian"Blessed areThou,0Lord,theGodofourfathers, andthynameisworthyofpraise,and glorioitsforever."Notareproach escapeethem,butonlyapastoralexhortationtopatienceandfortheide.Theywill notevensaytoGod,astheymight,like"the threechildren"ofIllselection"Thou hestdeliveredusintothehandsofour enemies"thatarcunjust,andtoaKing unjust.andmostwicked"beyondallthat areupontheearth."

Amidallthepersecutionswhlenhave unhappilyMenontheCatholicsin Germany,itisgratifyingtonoticetheir loyaltytotheirpesecutingEmperor, andtheirundyingattachmenttothe CatholicChurch,andfidelitytothe HolySee.TimehasstrewntheProtestantPressofbothGermanyand England,thattheCatholicfaithhadtoo deepaholdontheGermanmindtobe rootedoutevenbycruelandrefined FalckLaws,anditisnowabundantly manifestthatCatholictrainingand education,hasmadetoolastinganimpressionontheCatholicmindtoeasily erasetheinstincts,andfeelingsof Christianityfromamongthepeopleof thatfaith,andthefidelityoftheGermanCatholics,undertheirseveretrials, isasignalproofthattheEmperorcannot cutthemoff,ashedesired,fromthe Orbit;Catholicus.Thepersecuting spiritoftheGermanlaws,cannotbutbe deplored,butrocentevents,displaya causeforevenmuchmoreuneasinessto reflectingminds.'Ihatapolishedand refinednationshouldbecomepersecuting,iscertainlytobedeplored,but thatitshouldloseitsChristianityisof muchmoreseriousimport.Thatthe Germans,whoarenon-Catholic, arefallingawayfromChristianity,therecentdecisionofthe NationalProtestantChurchtoabolish theApostles'Creed,onlytooclearly manifests.TheReformedChurchof Germany,itwouldseem,hasbeenso reformedintheseourdays,thatwere LutherorZwinglitoappear,they wouldbeappalled,Christianityhas beenoastout,andinfidelitysetupin

THEWEATHER.-Duringthepastmonth theweatherhasbeenunusuallyfine,and thecropsinmanypartsofthecolonymanifestawantofrain.Therainsthisseason,it isremarkable,havebeenmostpartial.In theEasternportionofthesettledpartsofthe colony,thefallofrainhasbeenveryslight, whileinthesouthernandnothernportions therehasbeenraininabundance.

CATHOLICYOUNGMEN'SSOCIETYPERTH.

-TheCommitteeofthePerthCatholic YoungMen'sSociety,beingdesirousof renderingtheSocietymorepopularwithits members,andattractivetoitsfriends,have verywiselyresolveduponhavingmonthly reunions,atwhichinterestingreadings,&c., willbegiven,aswellasselectvocalandinstrumentalmusic.Admissionwill,weunderstand,bebyticketonly.ThefirstconversazonewilltakeplaceintheHallinwhich theSociety'sweeklymeetingsareusually held,onTuesday,the16thofOctober,inst. JARRAH.-TheGovernmenths.veappointed aCommissiontoreportuponourJarrah Timberandalsouponthebestmeansofincreasingitsexportation.Wearenotinsensibleofthegreatvalueofourextensive forests,butwehavelongsincegivenupthe ideaoftheirbeingspeciallycalculatedto advancethecolony.TheCommission certainlycandonoharm,butthegeneral publichaveheardsomuchaboutJarrah,that howeverinterestingtheCommissionersreportmaybe,itwillprovestaletoWest AustraliansEveryonewhohas,asyet, entereduponJarrahexportation,havehad thepainfulnecessityofregrettingthathe hadeverdoneso.Jarrahnodoubtisamost usefultimber,butthefactis,itsexportation doesnotpay.IftheCommissioncan suggesthowa"Jarrah"tradecanbe profitablyundertaken,theywillhavedonea goodwork,forwhichthecolonycouldnotbe toothankful.

Weclipthefollowingextractfroma lettertoourcontemporary,theMelbourneAdvocate:-

OneofthedayswhichtheAmericans liketocommemoratehasjustpassedthe30thofMay,onwhichtheypay tributetothe"memoryofthedead," byvisitingandstrewingflowerson thegravesofthesoldierswhofellin thelatecivilwar.Theceremoniesat theCavalryCemeterywere,perhaps, themostinteresting,asthe69th Regiment,accompaniedbythesurvivorsofMeagher'sIrishBrigadeand theCorcoranLegion,attendedthereto decoratethegravesofthevariousIrishAmericanregimentswhowereinterred there.Theassemblageofcitizenswas thelargesteverseeninthecemetery.

MajorIforgan,whoservedinonoof theIrishBrigaderegiments,spokeas follows:-

hadimposedthedutiesandconferred therightsofcitizenship,sothatthey mightfeelallacitizen'sinterestin whatshouldconcernthecommonweal. Ontheseforeignborncitizens,then, theanxiouseyesofAmericanstatesmen werecast.Theyhadtakenlittleshare inthestrifeoffactionsfromwhichtile quarrelhadsprung.Theyfe'tno sectionalprejudices;ofbitternessbetweenNorthernandSouthernmenthey knewbutlittle.Theirhearts,grateful andloyal,beatwithequalloveforall theGreatRepublic,andlookedonit, inallitswideextent,astheirhometheproudinheritanceof'theirchildren.
