Duringtheex-Premier'seagerly-lookedfor visittoIreland,itisthoughtthathewillbe theguestofMr.MitchellHenry,M.P. Therighthon.gentleman.inanswertoa Mr.Walters,ofthiscity,haswrittendistinctlytosaythathisvisitwillbepurely Privateandpersonal.Itishisrole,hesays. todeclineallshareinpubliccelebrations withwhichhehasnolocalconnection "nor,"beadds."doIthinkIrelandinits presentstatewouldhareanyreasontothank mefordepartingfromthatruleonthe presentoccasion."Itiscurrentlybelieved. here,thatMr.Gladstone'svisitwillbeconfined,asfarasanypublicappearanceis concerned,toUlster.Itisintendedtobeas nearlyaspossibleaprivatevisit.

"Weconclude,"saystheNation,"thatMr. Gladstonecomeswithapoliticalpurpose. andwehavenodoubtthepurposetofeel thepulseofthecountry,tosoundthedepths ofIrishfeeling,and,onthespot,toascertain ifthereisanyhopeoffurtherhelpfrom IrelandfortheWhigs.Timewas,notso manyyearsago.whenthestrengthofthe IrishvotewaswithMr.Gladstone.Inhis dayofsupremepowerhecouldcounton somethreescorevotesofIrishmembersto backhiminanyveryserioustrialofstrength. TheWhigsareshiveringnow-a-daysinthe shadeofopposition,buttheyhopethattheir timewillcome,theyrelyonthemany chancesofhomeandforeignpoliticsto operateintheirfavour,andtheylooktothe betterdaywhenWhiggeryshallagainfill theplaceoflower.Mr.Gladstone,beyond allquestion,lookslikewiseeagerlytothat daybuthe,likeeveryotherWhigwho pondersonthequestion,feelsthatthe comingbackofpowerisdependenton substantialIrishsupport.Howthatsupport waslosthebuttoowellremembers.Itleft himwhenheceasedtoguidehimselfbythe indexofIrishideas-when,departingfrom thelineofhisIrishChurchandLandActs, hedidoutragetothemostcherishedofIrish ideasonthegreatandvitalsubjectof education.Theresentmentfeltbythe countryproducedthedefeatthatpresaged theLiberalfall,andthegeneralelection thatdroveMr.Gladstone,humiliated,outof power,witnessedalsotheutterdestruction ofthepartyofIrishWhigs,andthetransmissionofadecisiveweightofIrish politicalpowertotheadvocateofnativerule forIreland.

THELATEBISHOPMORIARTYANDNATIONAL EDUCATION.

ThelamentedBishopofKerry,itehasbeen explainedinaletteraddressedtotheTimes withinthelastdayortwobyCanonGriffin, writingfromthePalaceatKillarney,never advocatedmixededucation.Hesimply accepted"thenationalsystem"becausehe believeditpreferabletolittleornoeducation,whichwouldbetheresultofrefusing it,inconsequenceofthepovertyofhis diocese.Atalltimes,however,butmore especiallyathisDiocesanSynod,hewarned hisclergy,who'veinnearly-everyparish managersoftheschools,toneetheUtmost vigilanceovertheteachingandmoralconductoftheteachere.Bedemandedfrom them,infact,astrictobservanceofthedecreesOftheSysiodsofThurleeandMa/month: whichobligetheClergytevisittheirschools, stillestonceaweek.Addedtothis,when: OttProtestantBishopof'thediocese,ina chargetohis'Clergy,Warnedthemofthe dangerincurred'byProtestantchildrenwho Ottendedschoolsunder'Catholicmanage.' inent,-especiallyconventiebeele;hedirected 'CanoniGriffin(asthelettereiplaltu.)toiSreservethejournalinwhichbis'chargeappeared,inorderthatheMightbeableto show,ifnecessityarose,thatProtestant prelatesheldtheMiteviewsonthe,great questionofeducationas'he'and.the"other VatbolicBishopsat

Beyondthis,beunhesitatinglyrefused parentspermissiontoSendtheirchildeensto theQueen'sCollege&"WhetsMr.Gladatonesstatementonthe.ColTerailBUt 4410.614pabkoieImmo *Imo CahonGriffin,"he(BishopMoriarity)was sufferingfromaseverecold,andaskedme toreadittohim,and,afterlistening attentively,anddesiringmetorepeatseveral passages,hesaidhehopedagoodBillwould follow;butwhenhesawtheBillinprint hesaid:'Itwillnotbereadasecondtime." Hewasatruefriendtothetenantfarmers ofthecounty,andinconsequenceofthe greatinfluencehepossessedwithboth CatholicsandProtestants,hedidthemmany servicesunknowntothemselves.Healways maintainedthat"mildremonstrance"producedbetterre,tiltsthanviolentattacksat meetingsorinpublicjournals.Butifreal wrongorinjurywereinfilc,edonanytenant farmer,heneverhesitatedtodemandimmediatereparation,while,ontheotherhand. heconstantlyadvisedthefarmernottobe ledawayagainsthislandlordbypolitical adventurers.Thismoderatelineofconduct gainedfortheBishopofKerryuniversal confidenceandrespect.Asiswellobserved byCanonGriffin.theintensegriefshownat hisobsequiesbyallclassesandcreedswas themosteloquentpanegyricthatcouldbe preachedovertheremainsofthisillustrious prelate.

THZPRIMEMINISTEROFFRANCE.

ThePrimeMinisterofFrance,M.leDue deBroglie.hasspokenupontheveryeveof theElections.Addressingareunionintimeof theConservativeCommitteesofParis,be said,amongotherthings-"Itisstill necessarytoreverttothetermsinwhichthe disputewasstartedonthe16thofMaylast byMarshalMacMahonhimself.What,in fact,didMarshalMacMahonmeanonthe 16thMay?Whatwasthecauseofhissignal rupturewithM.JulesSimon?Howdidwe explainit-mycolleague.M.deFotirtou,to theChamberofDeputies,andItothe Senate?Webothrecalledtheloyaltywith whichMarshalMacMahonhadacceptedthe theRepublicanConstitution.thescrupulosity withwhichhecarrieditout,thealacrity withwhichhehadfacilitatedtheformation oftwoMinisterieswhosedevotiontothe publicwasbeyonddoubt.Hehadonly askedthem,hesaid,onething-nottoundergotheyokeofRadicalism,andthatthat Radicalismweexhibited,personifiedinits leader,inhimwhoknowsalikehosetoserve itsinterestsandprepareitsaccession-M. Gantbetta.ItdidnotbefitMarshal MacMahon-itdidnotbefiteitherhisconscienceorhisglory.'Thequestionwasthus verysimple-ConservatistnandRadicalism. MacMahonandGambetta.It.wasallexpressedinthoseideasandtwonames. EXTRAORDINARYCUREFORSCALDSAND BURNS.

Itisnotoften(saystheScientific American)thataninventorgassuchan implicitfaithinhisinvention,orthenerve todemonstratethefact,asDr.Waters,of Salem.recentlyshowed-beforetheMassachusset'sDentalSociety.Hestatedthat bi-sarbonateofsoda,suchasusedforcooking purposes,oranyotheralkaliinneutralform, wouldaffordinstantaneouscessationofpain fromtheseverestburusandscalds,andwould curesuchinafewhours.Deliberatelydippinga spongeintoboilingwater,thedoctor squeezeditoverhisrightwrist,producinga severescaldaroundhisarmandsome2 inchesinwidth.Then,despitethesuffering occasioned,heappliedthescaldingwaterto hiswristforhalfaminute.Bi-carbonateof sodawasatoncedustedoverthesurface,a wetclothapplied,andpain,theexperimenter stated,wasalmostinstantlydeadened. AttheconclusionofMass,HisLordship impartedPapalBenediction,inthename oftheSupremePontiff,entitlingallpresent toaplenaryindulgenceontheusualcon ditions.Themusicontheoccasionwas veryeffectivelyrenderedbythechoirand. everythingconducedtothesolemnityof thefestival.AgreatnumberofpersonsapproachedtheHolySacraments.

OnMonday:he9th,firstdayofthe ImmaculateConception,theCeremonyof receptionofchildrenofMary,tookplace intheCathedralat4o'clock.Ninegirls receivedthemedalandblueribbonfrom thehandsofHisLordship,andwere admittedasmembersoftheassociation. TheCeremonywasveryimpressive. Immediatelyafterthereception,theprocessionbegantoform,the"childrenof Mary"assemblingtothenumberofabout 70,andpresentingamostpleasingsightto thecongregation.Theywerealldressed inwhite,withveils,,thePresidentwearing ascarf.Atsuitabledistances-banners werecarried,adorneilwithstreamerswhich hadaveryprettyeffectandlastly,the imageoftheImmaculateVirginwasborne inabeautifullyornamentedcanopybyfour children,namely,MissEllenReilly,Miss HenriettaFancily,MissChristinaRodoreda, andMissCecilySmith..HisLordsn'p,the Bishopandattendantsfollowed,andmany ofthecongregationalsocameafter.The choirkindlygavetheirvaluableservices. andtheLitanywaschantedaroundthe Cathedral.Theprocessionreturnedinthe sameorder.andtheceremoniesclosedwith solemnBenedictionoftheMostBlessed Sacrament.
