ThenameofbavidUrquhart,whodied lastsummer,waswellknowninthediplomaticworld.HehadlivedinTerkey,gtudled itandwrittenaitinaworkentitled "TurkeyandHerResources."lehad servedLordPalmerston,butwithdrewfrom hisservicebecausetheRussiantendencies ofthePremierweretoogreatforMr. Urquhart.Duringlateyearsheconducted ajournalandcontributedtoothers.His mindwasofaCatholictendencyyethedied outoftheChurch.Now,however,his widow,hertwosons,andtwodadghters havejustbeenreceivedintotheChurch.On the8thofDecember,FeastoftheImmaculate Conception,atFriburg,inSwitzerland,the illustriousladywithherfamilysolemnly abjuredProtestantismandreceived,first, CatholicBaptism.thentheSacramentof Confirmation,intheprivatechapelofthe BishopofFriburg,Mgr,Marilley.General Castellawasgodfatherforoneoftheboys, andanobleladyofFriburggodmother'for oneofthedaughters,

AgaintheIrishEighthaveprovedtheir eeperiorityintheuseoftherifle,againvictoryhascrownedtheirarms.andagain,for thethirdtimeinfouryears,theyarethe possessorsoftheElchoChallengeShield. "FromBostonIwenttotheHouseof pray&atNewark,"hehashimselfwritten toafriend,"butwasneverforamoment satisfiedwithAnglicanism.Ifinally decidedtogoaboardasalastresort,to consultsomeofthegreattheologiansofthe EstablishedChurchofEnglandbuteven theyhadnootherargumentsformethan theoldonesIhadseenrefutedadozen times.Thoroughlydisgustedwiththe EstablishedChurch,IleftEngland,determinedtovisitFrance,Spain,andItaly, andtojudgeCatholiccountriesformyself butasaProtestantIwentnofurtherthan Paris.SixweeksinFranceshowedmethat therealityofCatholicismwasevenmore divinelyattractivethanthetheoryof Catholicism,whichIhadstudied,andwhich hadbralongtimecharmedme."

THEFIRSTPUBLICACTOrHISREIGN wastograntanannestytoallpolitical prisoners,onconditionthattheyshould. inthewordsoftheDecree,"makea solemndeclaration,inwriting,ontheir honor,thattheywouldnotinanyway oratanytimeabusethispardon,and wouldperformthedutiesofgoodand faithfulsubjectsforthefuture."

Nothwithstandingthis,abandofunscrupulousrevolutionistsformedasecret society,fortheobjectofdestroyingall theGovernmentsthenexistinginItaly, andformingaRepublic,toextendover theentirecountry.Theymade'awe forthemselves,threateningthemost terriblevengeanceagainstmemberswho wouldnotobeytheirorders,orwho wouldbetraythesecretsofthesociety; condemningsuchtoinstantdeathby thedaggerbysomeinvisibleband,even iftheywereonthebosomoftheirmother oratthealtarofChrist.

Inthemeantime,PiusIX.pursued thecoursedictatedtohimbyhisown goodandnobleheartintroducingextensivereformsintoeverybranchofthe administration,andatthesametime condemninginastrongmannertheunderhandwilesoftherevoultionistswho soughttosubverthisauthority.Large meetingshadbeenheldtoexpresstheir affectionforhim,andtheirappreciation ofhisreforms,bythousandsofhissubjects.

Aboutthistimetheterriblefamine, causedbythefailureofthepotato,took placeinIreland,anditshouldendear thememoryofPiusIX.toeveryIrish heart,that,althoughhewasatthetime overwhelmedwithtroublesofhisown, heexertedhimselftohisveryutmost forthereliefofourpoorcountrymen, andsent,consideringthelowstateof hisfinances,whatmaybecalledanoble sumofmoney,towardstheamelioration oftheirmiseries.

TheMarquisofRipon,whowastheprin. palspeakeratameetingheldintheRooms oftheCatholicClub,Paradise-square,in fatheranceoftheSocietyofS,Vincentde Pawl,andwhowasloudlyapplaudedon rising,addressedthemeetingasfollows (FromtheRegieter.) -Hestatedthatheheardofthesocietyata varyearlyperiodafterhehadthehappiness ofbecomingaCatholic.Heknewwhata workwasbeingdonebythesociety,tuthe neverfeltmuchattractedtoituntilberead *bookwhichsetsforthitsobjectsinthe clearestterms.Hewasstruckbythesingularwisdometthespirit,bythesingular gentleness,humility,andtruecharity,which breathedthroughoutthepage.Itappeared tohimthatthesocietyintendedtoconfer, first,greatbenefitsuponitsownmembers, andthenuponthepoorwhoseservantsthey were,asitwere,tobecome.Hefoundin theobjectsasingularmixtureofheavenly andearthlywisdom-thewisdomoftheserpentandthegentlenessofadove.Hehad longbeenlookingforsomethingofthekind, somewayinwhichhemightbeusefultohis neighbors,otherthanthatwtysowellknown toCatholicsinthiscountry-givingasubscriptiontoacharitableorreligiousobject. Hethencalledattentiontoonemeansof usefulnesswhichthechairmanhadnotmentioned.InFranceaelaboratesystemof whatwascalledpatronagehadbeenestablished,andtosomeextentthesystemhad beenintroducedintoLothian.Themembers ofthesocietydidwhattheycouldtofind suitableemployersforCatholicboyswho werejustenteringuponlife,andafterthe situationshadbeenprocuredkeptawatchful eyeuponthefuturewelfareoftheboys. Theyendeavoredtofittheboysforthesituationstheywereintendedtofill,andnow employersbadconfidenceintheirrecommendations,andtheywereenabledtodo ranchgood.Thesameneedforaworkof thatkindexistedinSheffield,andinall otherlargetownsasitdidinLondon,andhe urgeduponthosepresenttobeginatoncea workwhichwouldeventuallybeadvantageoustotheCatholiccause.Hethoughthe hadnoneedtopointoattheimportance,and, infact,thenecessityofthework.Ifitwere importantinaCatholiccountrylikeFrance, itmustbeofgreaterimportanceinanonCatholiccountrylikeEngland.Thedanger towhichthoseyouthswereexposed,living andworking,astheydid,sidebysidewith thosewhodidnotbelongtotheCatholic Churchwassotremendousandsoobviousto aUCatholicswhoknewthemeaningofthe lossoffaith,andhedidnotdoubtthatthe verythoughtwouldfillthemwithhonor, andwouldbesufficienttoexcitethemtoreal andearnestexerciseinthematter,that theymightsaveoneboyfroma danger. Hethenproceededto speakupontheimportanceofsecuring theattendanceofCatholicchildrenatCatholicschools.Thatwasanoldsayingthatto thecobblertherewasnothinglikeleather, andinthematterofeducationhehadhad foraverymanyyearsbeensomethingofa cobbler,not,hehoped,inthesenseofhaving patchedtheworkthathebaddone,batof havingacquiredagreattasteforeducational labor.Inthesedaystheelementsofeducation,'evenforthtsoorest,weresomething likeanecessaryoflife,andthenecessityof educationwouldbecomegreaterasc?..veation extended.Thequestionforthemwas whetherCatholicchildrenseretobesentto Catholicschoolsoruot,andhemaiotained, ashebelievedtheybadveryefficientCatholicschoolsinSheffield,thatitwasoneof theirmostimportantdutiestoseethatthose schoolswerewellfilledbythechildrenofthe CatholicpopulationofSheffield.Hethen pointedout,withrespecttothevisitingof thepoor,thatthegivingofmaterialrelief wasoneoftheleastimportantobjectsofthe society,andurgedthattheyshouldmake theirvisitswelcometothepoor,andshould whenoccasionofferedskilfully,delicately, andwithconsiderationavailthemselvesof theopportunityofplacingtheirreligious dutiesbeforethepeople.Healsohoped thattheywouldnotallowtheirconferences tobemerebusinessmeetings,butthatthey wouldendeavorontheseoccasionstopromoteeachother'sspiritualearnestness,and thusinanindirectmannerhelponthework ofthesociety.Heearnestlyadvocatedthat themembersofthesocietyshouldworkhand inhandwiththepriestsoftheparishesin whichtheywerelocated,andforetoldthe mostpromisingresults.Theyhadawork todoforthepoor;andwhowerethepoor? Ithasbeensaidthattheloveofricheswas apeculiarcharacteristicoftheage,buthe suspectedthatmenhavelovedrichesinall agesoftheworld.Apeculiarfeatureofthe times,however,seemedtobetheoverweeningrespectforrichmenwhichprevailed, andthebeliefthatrichesconferredupon theirpossessorssomethingofamoralworth -athinginitselfverycontrarytothespirit ofChristianity.Thepoorhadbeenalways pre-eminentlycalledbytheCatholic'Charch thefriendsofourLard;anditinworking forthepoortheywereanimatedbythe Christianspirit,anddidsoforChrist'sdear sakealone,theywouldbesidingagreatwork forthemselves.Christhadtoldthemthat foronecupofcoldwatergiventotheleast ofHisbrethrenHewouldamply retathem whentheyhadleftthisworldodivided classes,ofgreatriches,andterriblemisery, andhadgoneintothatotherand :country,wheretothosewhoserved wellwouldbegiventherewardswhichq

ThemarriageoftheDukeofNorfolkand-LadyFloraHastings,eldest daughterofMr.C.F:AbneyHastings andthelateCountessofLoudoun,was celebratedonWednesday,21stNov.,at theChurchoftheOratory,Brampton. ItisnearlytwocenturiessincewDuke ofNorfolkwasmarried-thatistosay, aDuke-thelastbeingThomas Howard,bornin1683,whosucceeded hisuncleHenry,DukeofNorfolk, K.G.,in1701,asDukeofNorfolk, andmarriedin1709,Mary,daughter andsoleheirofSirNicholasShireburn, Bart.,ofStonyhurst,Lancashire,and diedwithoutissuein1732.

Toprovideagainsttheweatheran awningwaserectedfromtheBrompton-roadtotheentranceofthechurch, which,withtheinteriorofthebuilding, wascarpetedwithcrimsoncloth.The greaterportionoftheseatsnearestthe sauctuarywasreservedforthewedding party.Thehighaltarwasresplendent withitsgoldencandlesticksandvases, thelatterfilledwithwhitetowers.On enteringthechurchlargecameliatrees wereseeninthedistancerightandleft ofthealtar,coveredbyhundredsof whiteblossoms,whichimpartedapleasantrelieftocrimsonandgildeddecorations.Thetreesweretwelvefeetin height,risingfromthecentreofgroups offoliageplants,ferns,andorchids.A littlelowerdown,withinthesanctuary, thiseyerestedupongroupsofplants-. miniatureferns,andpalms,with numerouslittewhitehyacinthspeeping outamidstgreenmossandmaiden-hair ferns.

TheDukeandLadyFloraHastings, accompaniedbysomeofthebridesmaids, assistedatanearlyMass,saidbythe Rev.F.Rowe,inSt.Philip'sChapel, andreceivedHolyCommunion.
