ATERRIBLEENGINEOFWAR.

TheWhiteheadtorpedohasaformidablerivalinwhatisknownasthe Laboratorytorpedo,whichisnow manufacturedextensivelyatWoolwich, England.SojealousaretheBritish regardingthislatestinvention,that M.Whiteheadhasnotbeenallowed toexamineit.Initsgeneral principles,however,itisunderstoodto resembletheWhiteheadtorpedo,but itsspeedisfargreater.Itwillrush beneaththewaterattherateof40 milesanhour.

partialrevoltwasraisedonthemorning ofthe6thofMarch,byabouttwenty SwissGuards.Theyrefusedtomount guard,notwithstandingtheordersand entreatiesoftheircommander,assigning astheirpretexttheirexpectationof receivingextrapayfortheirexceptional dutiesbeforeandduringtheConclave.

Thefactis,theywantedtoleave RomeforwhentheCommander threatenedtotreatthemastheydeserved,theyrepliedbyaskingwithone accordtobedismissed.Thiswas accordinglydoneonthe8thofMarch. Outofcompassionfortheseunhappy mentheHolyFatherhadtheirtravellingexpensespaid.Heorderedatthe sametime,thattrustworthyanddevoted menshould,assoonaspossible,take theirplace."

THEMARQUISOFBUTEANDTHE DEATHOFTHEPOPE.

TheMarquisofButehavingbeen invitedtoattendthedinnergivenby theRoyalScottishAcademyatthe openingoftheirannualexhibition,held onFridayeveninginthelargeOctagon oftheirgalleriesatGlasgow,sentthe followingtouchingletterinexplanation ofhisnon-attendance:-

TheRomecorrespondentofthe LiverpoolCatholicTimes,March8th, says:-OnSaturdaytherewasatouchingceremonyinthelittlechapelofthe HolyRomanInquisition.Dr.George W.Woods,U.SNavy,wasreceived intothebosomoftheHolyCatholic Churchbythe!Rev.Dr.O'Bryen,the ArchbishopofChalcedonadministered theSacramentofConfirmationtothe convert.Therewerepresentalsotwo Russians;BaronessVonTiesenhitusen, Frl.VonArneim,andMrs.Sydney Devise,fromSyracuse,N.Y.,who wereanxioustowitnesstheceremony previoustotakingpartinasimilarone ontheirownaccount.TheHoly Fatherafterwardsgaveanaudienceto theparty.

AdistinguishedAmericanlady,Mrs. GeorgeBowler,ofGincinnati,wasformallyreceivedintotheChurchby Mgr.Capel,inLondon,onthe15th December.Mrs.Bowleristhewifeof theowneroftheKentuckyCentral Railroad,andiscloselyrelatedtoMr, GeorgeH.Pendleton,andinherpositionhasbeensoprominentinsociety circlesbothintheWesternandinthe EasternStatesthatheraccessiontothe ChurchofRomeistoberegardedas ERImportantevent,Afterleaving

Englandshewillmakeapilgrimage, firsttoHisHolinessthePope,and afterwardsgotoEgyptandtheHoly Land.

DEATHOFCARDINALBERAB.DI.

GuiseppeBerardibelongedtoanoble familyofCaccano,whichwassettled inthatplaceearlyinthefourteenth century,andwhichgaveseveral CardinalstotheChurch.Hewasa widowerwithoutchildrenbeforeheembracedthecarriera.PopeGregory XVI.,onthe28thofNovember,1844, gavehimaseatonthesupremetribunal oftheSacredConsults,andinthe followingyearhewasmadejudgeof theCameraApostolica.In1848he followedPius1X.toGaeta,andinthe beginningoftheyear1849wasemployedintheardroustaskofrestoringas taraspossiblethePontificalGovernment.

Onthe19thMarchinthesameyear hewasmadeMinisterofCommerce, Agriculture,FineArts,andPublic Works,andthatofficeheretaineduntil theentryoftheItaliansintoRomein 1870.CardinalBerardialthoughin appearancerobust,andinyearsnot oversixty-eight,wassomewhatdelicate inhealth.Heshowed,however,no signofillnessattheConclave.Itwas, therefore,asurprise,tolearnthathe expiredat3.45a.m.onthe6thofApril, afterashortbutviolentattack.He receivedconsolationsofreligion.

THEPROGRE®sOFTHECHURCHIN SCOTLAND.

Fromdocumentsdepositedinthe Propogandaarchives,andfromstatistics,furnishedbytheVicars-Apostolic ofScotland,itwouldappearthatwithinthelastfiftyyearstheCatholicfaith inScotlandhasmadeanamazing progress.Intheyear1828theEastern districtcontained12secularpriests,10 churchesorplacesofworship,anda Catholicpopulationof25,000souls. Intheyear1877thesamedistrict contained73priestsofwhom20were regulars122placesofworship,7 religioushousesformenand8for women;55schoolsandaCatholic populationofatleast85,500souls. TheWesterndistrictcontainedin1828 22secularpriests,17placesofworship, andaCatholicpopulationof45,000 souls,In1877the"Westerndistrict contained146priests,ofwhom26were regulars;122placesofworship,6 religioushousesformenand8for women;99schools,andaCatholic populationestimatedateither262,000 or301,930.TheNortherndistrict containedinl82816regularpriests, 18churchesorplacesofworship,few schools,and10,000Catholicsouls.In theyear1877theNortherndistrict contained39priests,43placesofworship,6convents,20schoolsand12,500 Catholicsouls.

Inshort,thenumberof'priestsinall Scotlandhasincreasedfrom50in1828 to256in1877. Thechurches, chapels,andstationshaveincreased from45to252.In1828therewereno religiojishouses,whereasin1877there were22housesofreligiouswomenand 13ofmen.TheCatholicschools, whichwereveryfewin1828,arenow 174,exclusiveof11othereducational institutes.AndtheCatholicpopulation, whichin1828was86,000,isnow estimatedat360,000atthelowestcalculation

ItmaybenoticedthattheRev. AngusMacdonald,thenewly-created BishopofArgyle,isbrothertothe presentLairdofGlenaladale,whose ancestorreceivedPrinceCharlesinhis housethefirstnightofhislandingin Scotland,intherisingof1745.Inthe samemansion,BarrodaleHouse,the Princesleptonthelastnighthespent inScotland.

THEHOMERULEPARTY.

Mr.Butt'sresignationoftheleadershipoftheIrishParliamentaryparty, thoughlongexpected,hasexcitedgreat regretamonghispoliticalfriends. Theyfullyunderstanditssignificance, anddeploreitsmostprobableresultas thebreakupofthewholeparty.Such ablowis,indeed,likelytoshiverto atomsthefragilefabricofHomeRule. Thisistheviewtakenofitonallsides. TheextremeNationaljournals thateventascertaintohappensoon. TheIrishmanobserves:-"Thereisno useinglossingoverthefactthatthe HomeRulepartyisfastgoingtopieces. Nowhereisthereanyorganisationor discipline,andallhopeshavevanished fromthemindsofeventhemostsanguineFederalists.Itwashardlytobe expectedthatthethingcouldsucceed. Thepeoplehadnofaithinthemovement,becausetheleadingandguiding lightswere,withveryfewexceptions, menofnopatriotism-mereadventurers, withoutheart,withoutpurpose,save thegratificationoftheirownselfishambition.TheresignationofMr.Butt showsthattheHomeRuleorganisation isonitslastlegs.andwithitsfinal collapsewilldisappearforeverthehopelessshamofconstitutionalagitation."

TheFlagofIrelandexpressessimilar sentiments,andspeaksoftheFederal shipasalreadyfoundering.Itreviews thehistoryofthemovementinsarcastic terms,andsays:-"Theworking classesheardallthesefineplatform flourishes,andwinkedatoneanother. Theysawwhatitallmeant-anagitationforthemerepurposeofliftinga fewscoreofambitiouspersonsinto theEnglishHouseofCommons. ConsequentlytheIrishmasses,though theypartlycontributedtoswellmeetingsfromtheirdesiretohearspeeches, neverputanyfaithintheflexibleplan ofFederalism.Possiblytheymight havebeenencouragedtolendsupportif theleadershadshowntherightspirit; Buttherewaslittleornopatriotismin therepresentativebody,andpatriotism isthesoulofeverypoliticalmovement. Withoutthatnoorganisationcanlive. Theleadersweretoloyaltosecure attentioninParliamentortocommand afollowinginIreland.Infine,the fabricwasrotten;henceitsrapiddecay anddilapidation.Mr.Butt,hasloftthe ship.TheFederalbarqueisfoundering. Thepilotisgone.Thehelmisunmanageable.Whonowiscapableofkeeping thesinkingvesselafloat?Luckilyshe doesnotbearIreland'sfortunes,orthe nationwouldlamenttheimpendingshipwreckofherhopes.PerhapstheIrish racewillnotregretthattheHomeRote skiffisabouttoheelover,forwhenshe goesdownshewilldragwithherand buryconstitutionalactioninthedeep.°

THEWESTAUSTRALIANCATHOLICRECORD

CATHOLICSINTIMENGLISHNAVY,

IntheHouseofCommonsrecently Mr.SullivanaskedtheFirstLordof theAdmiraltytostatethenumberof Catholicsinthenavy,andwishedto knowwhetheranyshipscarriedCatholicschaplains,and,ifnot,whetherany stepwouldbetakentoextendtoCatholicsinthenavytheprivilegesenjoyed bytheirco-religionistsinthearmy.

Mr.W.H.SmithreferredthehonorablemembertoReturnNo.142ofthe year1873Imaystate,asnearlyas posible,thatofthesailorsandmarines inthenavy-wehavenorecordofthe officers-33,172belongedinthatyear totheChurchofEngland,1,748were Presbyterians,4,162wereProtestants ofotherdenominations,and5,350were Catholics.Intheshipsafloattherearo noCatholicchaplains;butatallthe chiefnavalportsthereareCatholic chaplainswhoarepaidbytheAdmirsilty,andhavefreeaccesstotheseamen ofthatfaithonboardHerMajesty's ships.Everyfacilityisaffordedto Catholicseamenormarinestoattend Divineserviceattheports,butIcannotholdoutanyprospectsoftheap- pointmentofCatholicchaplainstoships ofwar.

THItGOODEARLOFLEITRIM,

Thefatheroftheunfortunatepeer whomethisdeathbyviolencelast weekexpiredinhisbed,fullofyears. Hedidnotcarryloadedpistolshabituallyabouthisperson,neitherwasho compelledtoentertainagarrisonofconstablesinhiscastle,andhaveanarmed escortalwaysathisback.Hewasa popularman,forhewasagoodman, God-fearing,kindlyandcharitable.It wasnotrelatedofhimwhenhebreathed hislastthatliehadwrittentoanapplicantfortheagencyofhisDonegal estatesthathewishedforsomebody usedtoshootingnatives.Therewas noneedforaninquestoverhisremains. Illsendwaspeace,andhismemoryis heldinhonor,forthewhiteflowerofa blamelesslifeblossomsonhisgrave. Knowingthathisdayswerenumbered, hesatdowntohisdeskwithserene mindandpennedhiswill,inwhichhe condensedallofthewisdomthathis longexperieneegavehim,forthebenefit ofhissuccessor.Thedocumentis beforeusaswewrite,andseldomhas itbeenourprivilegetoreadonemore trulyChristianinsentiment,moremanfulintone,moreproudlyIrishinfeeling,andmoreelegantincomposition. Ilecounselshislegateeinthelanguage ofThomasDavis,"toservehiscountry andlovehiskind."Astheproperty kewillinheritisIrish,ashewasborn inIreland,andhisfamilyandconnectionsareallIrish,heimpressesupon himemphaticallythatheshouldever considerhimselfauIrishman,andwith anoblescornhelashesthecontemptible follyofthosewholookdownupontheir mother-landasifitwereathingof loathing.Remember,addsthevenerableoldearl,youcanneverbeofconsequenceorevenrespectableinEngland unlessyouarerespectableinIreland. Thisgoodoldmanevidentlyappreciated theaxiomoftheIrishwitwhohas writtenthattherearetwoclassesof Irishmen-thosewhoareproudoftheir country,andofwhomtheircountry oughtbeproud,andthosewhoare ashamedoftheircountry,andofwhom theircountryoughtbeashamed.A badIrishmanneveryetmadeagood Englishman,andNathaniel,secondEarl ofLeitrim,knewit.Hewarnshis successor,"nowthattheParliamentof IrelandhasmergedintothatofEngland,"thatitishismostessentialbusiness,shouldheevergetintoSt. Stephen's,towatchovertheinterestsof Ireland.And,finally,heenjoinsupon Irisheirtocultivatetheattachmentand goodopinionofhistenantry,togive themleasesandnevertorackrent. Betteradviceneverwasgiven.Had Itbeenfollowed,theannalsofcrime wouldbelessto-daybyoneterrible tragedyatIMIst.-Universe,

TheWashingtonDailyCritic,inspeaking oftheEarlofLeitrim,says;--

ThemurderofanIrishEarlbyhistenants isaneventofnoordinaryimportance.The LondonTimesofyesterdayremarkedthat "itisnoexaggerationtosaythatthenews ofthemurderoftheEarlofLeitrim,which causedaprofoundsensationintheHouseof Commonsyesterday,whenconfirmedbythe IrishSecretary,hadstruckthiscountry withasmuchpainandamazementasanunprovokeddeclarationofwar."TheEarl wastheownerofimmenselandedestates, andwasnotedasaharshandmercilesslandlord,whohadnoscrupleaboutdrivinghis tenantsoffattheriskoftheirstarvation, foranyfailuretocomplywiththetermsof theirleases,orwithaviewtoconvertingthe estateintopasturelands.Heisreportedto havebeeninthehabitofreplyingtotheir petitions:-"GotoHellorto ea1"

Thisheartlessearlbyhiscrueltytothe poor,andbytheircruelrevenge,hiebrought theodiouslandlawsofhiscountrybefore thepublicinawaynotsoontobeforgotten. Menarebeginningtothinkthat"theearth istheLord's,"andthathemadeitforall

TheWayneCountryCourier,Michigan, takesthesameviewsastheWashington Critic.TheEveningNewsofDetroitcharacterizedthetakingoffoftheearlasa "barbarousandcruelmurder."The Courier,afterquotingthelanguageofthe Newssays:--

"Lateparticularsabouttheshootingof theEarlofLeitrimandhispartyshowsthe crimetohavebeenoneofthose.horrible agrarianoutrageswithwhichthehistoryof Irelandisstained,butwhichbadbecome quiterareoflateyears.Eightyoftheearl's tenantswereundernoticetoquittheir homes,andthemurderwasdoneintheimmediatevicinityofacottagefromwhichhe recentlyevictedawidow.Themagnitudeof thepresentassasinationwillcalluniversal attentiontoit,andmayevenshockthe consciencesoftheIrishthemselves,sufficientlytoawakeintheirmindstheconvictionthatitisabarbarousandcruelmurder, andnotanactofpatriotism.

Speakingofhiswholesaleevictions,theNee PressofScranton,Pa.,says

"Ithasbeenregardedaswonderfulthat hewasnotkilledbytheoutragedpeasants yearsago.Heusuallyrodethroughhis estatesarmedtotheteethandaccompanied bytwoarmedpolicemen,latelyhebecame bolder,andtravelledunattendedexceptby hisclerkandcoachman.Hisdeathisnot lamentedbyhistenantsoranyo:.eelsewho knewhim,andweslionlddeemitverypecu- liarifitwas.Thisincidentwillremind harshanddomineeringlandlordsthatthough theymaybeclothedwithalittlebrief authority,'theycannotwithimpunitytrampleuponthepeopleundertheircharge; thewormwillturnandstingthefootwhich tramplesuponit,andanoutragedtenantry willwreakaterriblevengeanceontheir persecutors.Wewillnotattempttoexcuse thefaultoftheperpetratorsofthiscrime, butcertainly,theworldisbetteroffwithout suchtyrants."TheSanFranciscoChronicle speakingoftheEarl'sdeath,makesuseof thefollowinglanguage:-"TheEarlof Leitrim,whosedeathhasbeentelegraphed, appearstohavebeenoneofthoselandlords whosesoleprincipleisself,andwhoconstitutedhimselfatyrantundercoveroflaw. Thehorroranddetestationnaturallyleftfor assassinationinsayfdrmmustbetempered bytheconsiderationofwhatLordLeitrim's tenentsmusthavesuffered.Hewasslain, asothershavebeenslain,becausehisconductwasunbearable,andhumannaturerevoltedagainstintolerableoppression."

AnotherCaliforniapapertheSanFrancisco DailyEveningPress,isofthesameopinion. Itsays:-

Thosewhohavetraoedtheprogressofthe crowbarbrigade'inIreland,andwitnessed thedesolationandmiseryofitstrack,will takeamorelenientviewthantheyotherwise mightoftheassassinationofRobertBerminghamClements,EarlofLeitrim."

Butthatkindofhumancivilisation,which isrepugnanttothesacreddoctrinessadlaws oftheChurch,istobqregardedbutasan emptynameandfigure.Andofthisanexampleisaffordedbythosenationsonwhomthe lightoftheGospelhasnotshone,inwhose life,indeed,somesparkofhumanculturecan beseen,butitstrueandrealbenefitsarenot possessed.That,certainly,isnottobeconsideredtrulycivilisedstate,inwhichevery legitimateauthorityisdespised;noristhat tobeesteemedlibertywhich,totheshame andthemiseryofall,runsriotintheuncheckedpropagationoferror,thefreemdulgenceofdepraveddesires,theimpunity ofoutragesandcrimes,andtheoppression ofgoodcitizensofeveryclassforthese, beingvainandwickedthings,cannotform thehumanfamilyandguideittohappiness, forsinmakesthepeoplewretched;butit mustneedsbethat,destroyingalikesoul andbody,theydragthemdownbytheirown weighttorain,confoundallrightorder,and thus,soonerorlater,bringtheprospirity andpeacetotheStateoffinaldestruction.

whichHewishedtouseasasymbolofHis anionwiththeChurch,hasnotonly renderedmoreholytheconjugalunion,but haspreparedfortheparentsaswellasfor thechildrenthemostdilationsaidsby whichtheymaymorereadilyarrive,by accomplishingtheirmutualdutiesatthe possessionoftemporalandeternalfelicity. Butwhenimpiouslaws,havingnoregardto therespectduetothisgreatsacrament, haveplaceditinthesamecategoryas purelycivilcontracts,theresultisthe deplorableconsequencesthat,thedignityof Christianmarriagebeingviolated,some citizenshavesubstitutedlegalconcubinage forthelegitimateunionthemarriedcouple haveneglectedtheirmutualdutiesof fidelity,thechildrenhavenotobservedthe respectandobediencewhichtheyowedto theirparents,thetiesofdomesticaffection havebeenrelaxed,ani,whatisamost detestableexample,thegravestprejudiceto publicmorals,perniciousandregretable separationshaveveryoftensucceededtoan insensatelove.Itisimpossible,venerable brethren,thatthesightoftheselamentable calamitiesshouldnotawakenOurzeal,and shouldnotinciteyoutorecommendseriously andconstantlytothefaithfulconfidedto yourvigilance,tolendadocileeartothe doctrineswhichtreatofthesanctityof Christianmarriage,andtoobeythelawsby whichtheChurchregulatesthedutiesof parentsand*children.

Wouldthatthissalutaryauthorityhad neverbeenneglectedorrepudiatedIThen wouldnotthecivilpowerhavelostthat augustandsacredhonorwhichreligionimpresseduponit,andwhichalonemadethe conditionofobediencedignifiedandnoble; norwouldsomanyseditionsandwarshave beenkindled,whichhavesaddenedtheworld withcalamitiesandslaughter;norwould onceflourishingkingdoms,castdownfrom thesummitofprosperity,becrushedunder theweightofwoesofeverydescription.

TheOrientalnationswho,havingbroken thesweetbondswhichjoinedthemtothis ApostolicSee,havelostthesplendourof theirformergreatness,thegloryofthearts andsciences,andthefameoftheirEmpire, affordanexampletowhatWehavesaid.

ThislandofItalyexperiencedinaspecial mannerthosegreatbenefitswhichthe famousmonumentsofalltimesproveto havebeenconferredbytheApostolicSeein everypartoftheworld;andfromthe proximityofherpositionshereapedmore abundantfruits.ItalyowestotheSovereignPontiffsthegloryandthegreatness whichdistinguishedheramongothernations. Theirauthorityandpaternalcareprotected hermorethanoncefromtheassultofher enemies,andwassuchahelptoherthat therewasnotimeinwhichtheCatholic faithwasnotpreservedintactinthehearts oftheItalians. Servicessuchasthese,renderedbyOur predecessors,topassoverotherinstances, arerecordedespeciallyinthehistoryofthe timesofSt.LeotheGreat,ofAlexander InnocentIII.,St.PlusV.,LeoX.,and ofotherPontiffs,bywhoselaborsandprotectionItalywassavedfromtheutterruin threatenedbythebarbarians,retaineduncorruptedtheancientfaith,end,amidstthe gloomandwretchednessofabarbarousage, nourishedandkeptalivethelightofscience andthesplendourofthearts.Thisfair city,theSeeoftheSupremePontiffs,attests thosebenefitsofwhichitreceivedsolarge ashare,becomingnotonlytheImpregnable citadelofthefaith,buttherefugeofthe artsandthehomeoflearning,andattracting toitselftheattentionandthewonderofthe wholeworld.Inpresenceoftheproofsof thesegreatfacts,affordedforeverbythe monumentsofhistory,wecaneasilyunderstandthatnothingbutextrememaliceand unworthycelumny,intendedtodeceivemankind,couldeverhavecausedIttobesaidor writtenthatthisApostolicSeewasanobstacletothecultureandthehappinessof Italy. Besidesthis,wishingthattheconcordof theentireCatholicflock,withtheSupreme Pastor,shouldbestrengtheneddaybyday, Weaddresstoyouhereanespeciallyaffectionateappeal,venerablebrethern,and warmlyexhortyou,byyoursacerdotalzeal andpastoralvigilance,toinflametheloveof religionintheheartsofthoseentrustedto yourcare,sothattheybeattachedmore closelyandintimatelytothisseatoftruth andjustice;thattheymayreceiveallits doctrineswiththedeepestsubmissionof spiritandwill,andabsolutelyrejectallthe opinions,eventhemostwidespread,which maybeopposedtotheteachingofthe Church.RememberingthewordsofSt. Paul-"Bewarelestanymanchestyouby philosophyandvaindeceit,accordingtothe traditionsofmen,accordingtotheelements oftheworld,andnotaccordingtoChrist," RomanPontiffs,Ourpredecessors,andin particularPiusIX.,ofholymemory especiallyintheVaticanCouncil,havenever ommitted,whenitwasnecessary,toreprove thecurrenterrors,andcondemnthemwith Apostoliccensure.FollowinginthefootstepsofOurpredecessor,weconfirmand renewallthosecondemnationsfromOur ApostolicSeeoftruth,and,atthesame time,weferventlypraytotheFatherof Lighttograntthatallthefaithful,fully unitedinthesamefeelingsandsentiments, maythingandspeakinaccordwithUs.It isyourduty,venerablebrethren,todevote yourassiduouscarestoscatterafarinthe fieldoftheLordtheseedofyourheavenly doctrines,andtocausetheprinciplesofthe Catholicfaithtopenetrateearlyintothe soulsofthefaithful,sothattheymaypush theirrootsdeeperandbepreservedinthat shelterfromthecontagionoferrors.The greatertheeffortsoftheenemiesofreligion topresenttoinexperiencedpersons,and especiallytoyouth,teachingswhichmay obscuretheirminds,andcorrupttheir hearts,themoremustyoulaborzealously forthesuccess,notaloneofagoodandsolid methodofeducation,butespeciallytomake theteachingitselfconformableinscienceand disciplinetotheCatholicfaithparticularly inphilosophy,onwhichdependsinagreat mannerthatjustdirectionofothersciences, andwhich,farfromtendingtodestroythe Divinerevelations,islikelyrathertosmooth thewayforitandtodefenditagainstits enemies,ashasbeentaughtUsintheexampleandwritingsofthegreatAugustine andotherdoctorsofChristianscience. Itisthusyouwillbring-aboutadesirable reforminthemoralsandmannerofliving ofeachmaninparticularforasanunsoundtreeproducesrottenbranchesand miserablefruit,thesadblotwhichdepraves familiesiscontagions,andbecomesacause ofviceandsinineachindividualmember. Onthecontrary,ifthefamilyisgovernedby therulesofChristianlife,eachmemberof itwillgraduallybecomeaccustomedto cherishreligionandpiety,torejectwith horrorfalseandperniciousdoctrines,to practisevirtue,torenderobediencetothe authorities,andtorepresstheinsatiable egotismxhichsomuchlowersandenfeebles humannature.Withthisobjectitwould certainlybeveryusefultodirectandencouragethoseassociationswhichhave principallybeenestablishedoflateyearsto thegreatadvantageofCatholicinterests. OrphanageforboysatSubiaco.No.of Governmetinmates42.Thisinstitutionis alsomanagedbytheSistersofMercy,who sparenopainsinthecareofthechildren theprovisionsweregoodandthechildren areallowedsufficientfortheirwants. Thedormitorieswerecleanandwell ventilated. Thehealthoftheinmatesduringthepast quarterhasbeengood.

Theelderboysareemployedinvarious usefulways,someinfarmworksomeinthe garden,othersingatheringolivesandpressingthefruitalargequantityofoilhasbeen madethsseasonandpromisestobeofexcellentquality. WithouttheassistanceandselfdevotionofthegoodSistersofMERCY weneedhardlysay,thegoodthathas beendoneforthelittlehelplessones, couldnothavebeenaccomplished,nor couldtheOrphanagesbeexpectedtobe maintainedintheirpresentpleasing Condition.

TheSistersofMERCYhavecertainly donetheirwork;anditwillstillbeto themapleasuretocontinuetozealously dischargethosedutiesatourOrphanages,whichhavewonforthemsuch goldenopinions.

But,willingasthegoodSistersareto sacrificeself,intheirnoblecalling,still itis,dutyonourpart-whichwe cannotforego-tocomeforwardand helpthem,asfaraswecan,intheir labors.

THECHURCHOFENGLANDNEW CATHEDRAL.-Strenuouseffortshavebeen madebythemembersoftheAnglican Churchtosecurethehandsomedonationof £2000,whichsomeunknownpersonhad offeredtocontributetothenewCathedral buildingfund,undercertainconditions. JARRAHTIMBER.-Thepeculiarsuitability ofourJarrahTimberforrailwaysleepersand fortheconstructionofHarborWorks,isjust nowattractingconsiderableattentioninthe mothercountry.ReferringtoJarrah Timber,theHomeNewssays:-"Asthe demandforthewoodisnowrapidlyonthe increase.itissatisfactorytoknowthatthere isanunlimitedsupplyofit.Itonlyremainsforenterprisingland-ownersin WesternAustraliatocutitdowninsufficient quantitiestomeetthedemand."

THEPRISONCHAPLAINCYATFREMANTLE.-WeareinformedthatthearrangementsproposedbytheimperialGovernment concerningtheprisonchaplaincyatFremantle,cannotbecarriedintoeffectatpresentandthatFatherDELANEYwhowasto haveretiredfromhisdutieson10thoflast month,willnowremainsometimelongerat hispost.ThedifficultyunderwhichHis. LordshiptheBishopofthedioceselabours, inprovidingasuccessortoFatherDELANEY inthepresentscarcityofpriestsis,webelieve,thecauseofthesuspensionofintendedchanges.

OCRORPHANAGES.-Wewouldcallthe particularattentionofourreaderstothe verypleasingandsatisfactoryreportofthe InspectorofCharitableInstitutions,Mr.W. Dale,onourOrphanages,whichappearedin theGovernmentGazette,ofthe9thinst.,and whichwillbefoundelsewhereinourissueof to-day.Thefriendsandsupportersofthe Orphanages,wehavenodoubt,willbegratifiedatthetestimonyoftheInspectorasto thesoundconditionandsatisfactoryworking oftheOrphanages.TheInspectoronly reportsontheinmatesofourOrphanages admittedandpaidforbytheGovernment. Wehavebesidesthese,however,23girlsand 10boys,maintainedattheexpenheofthe Institutions.Ourfriendsshouldbear agratefulrecollectionofthesecharitable works,andreachustheirhelpinghandmore frequently.

THEEDUCATIONAOT.-Oarattentionhas againbeencalledtothenecessityofurging upontheGovernmentthefairnessofmaking theminimumnumberofchildrenattending anyAssistedSchool,toentitleittothecontinuanceofGovernmentaid,thesameasthat forpurelyGovernmentschools.TheAssistedschoolstheminimumisfixedatTimmy,

andforGovernmentschools,at7'iostes. Whythereshouldbeanysuchdifference,we arereallyatalosstounderstand,andcannotbutthink,thataproperrepresentationto theGovernment,pointingouttheunfair distinction,whichisdrawnbetweenGovernmentandAssistedSchoolsinthisrespect, particularly,wouldmeetwithfavorable consideration.WetrustthattheManagers ofourPerthSchools,beinginsuchclose proximitytotheCentralBoardofEducation, willtakeuponthemselvesthedutyofhelping theircountryfriendsbybringingthissubject prominentlytotheirnotice.

BOYS'NEWSCHOOL-HOUSEPERTH.-We aregratifiedtoobservethattheBuilding CommitteeoftheBoys'newSchool-House, haveenlistedintheirservice,quitealittle armyofcollectors,inthepersonsofthe schoolchildren,whoarenowtobemetwith, almosteverywhere,withtheir"cards,"solicitingsubscriptions.Wearesatisfiedthatin gettingtheselittlecollectors,theCommittee haveadoptedawiseplan,andonebywhich theirexchequerwillbecontinuallyreplenished,aswhiletheywouldhavetowait, wecannotsayhowlongforPounds, PENNIESwillcomeinandamounttoPounds, inanastonishinglyshorttime.Incollections thetruthoftheoldsayingisinreality realized,viz,-lochafterthePennies-the Poundswillmindthemselves."Pennies"can begot,butPoundshavetobewaitedfor,and thattoo,oftenforaprovokinglylong time.Weheartilywishthelittlecollectors success,andhopeforaharvestofPennies,to pleasetheselittle"gleaners."

OURSUNDAYSCHOOLS.-Wearegratifie' tonoticetheincreasedattendanceofboys, andyoungmenatourSundaySchoolsof late,andweanticipatetheverybestresults therefrom.Circumstancedasmostofour peopleare,theyarecompelledtotaketheir childrenfromSchoolatacomparatively earlyage,andthattoo,justatatime,when theteachingoftheChristianDoctrinemakes adeepandlastingimpressionontheirmind_, hencethedesirabilityofinducingthemto attendtheSundaySchoolregularly.We wouldsuggesttheformationofasenio class,andthedistributionofprizes.asanadditionalattractionforSundaySchoolgoing. Hisnextvisitwastothejuniorportionof theAssistedSchool-theInfants.The numberpresentwas112,andathisLordship'srequest,thelittleonessangand accompaniedtheirvoiceswithappropriate gesturesofthehand,&c.Mrs.Allenexpressedherselfmuchpleasedwiththis portionoftheestablishment,theappearance ofthechildrenpleasedhermuch.The SistersweregratifiedtofindinMrs.Allen thesisteroftheirfriendMr.Barlee,andthe recognitiononbothsideswasapleasantone. Goinguphigher,thepartyenteredthe largeandspaciousschool-roomknownasthe AssistedSchool,and,thevisitorshaving takentheirplacesthechildrensangina pleasingmannerthesong,"Mornamidthe Mountains;"afterwhich,hisLordship, LadyLeakeandtheothervisitorsproceeded toinspectthewritinganddictationandexpressedthemselvesverymuchpleasedindeedwiththeneatlywrittencopybooks,and carefullywrittendictation-thelatteron slatesawaitingcorrection.Thismodeof teachingspellingisuniversallyapproved, andpractisedwithmuchsuccessinthe schoolinquestion.Thegueststhentaking seats,thepupilsofthe7thStandardformed intoaclassandreadaloudfromtheClass History-HisLordshipselectedthepage. Thechildrenreadremarkablywell,inaclear anddistincttoneofvoiceandalltheparty seemedpleased.About166werepresent. SomeportionsofBerlinwoolworkwere thenpresentedforexaminatiantothe Ladies.LadyLeake,whohadbeforeon severaloccasions,visitedtheschool,and alwaysexpressedthekindestinterestinthe pupilstogetherwiththeotherladies, admiredverymuchtheworkexhibited. Beforeleaving,HisLordshipwaspleased toenterareportintheVisitors'Book-as follows-"Visitedtheschoolincompany withLadyLeakeandthosewhosenamesare undersigned.Theorderandarrangements oftheschoolstruckmeasineverywayexceedinglygood,andjudgingbythespecimensshewnofreading,writing,anddictation,theinstructionisevidentlyvery carefulandthorough.MaythegreatHead oftheChurchblessallofgoodthatishere taughttotheeverlastingrejoicingbothof thosewhoteachandthosewhoare taught."

TheusualHalf-YearlyMeetingofthis Society,washeldontheeveningofThursday the4thinst.,intheroomadjoiningthe EpiscopalResidence.

Theattendanceofmemberswasmuch theaverage,andthegreatestinterestmanifestedthroughouttheproceedings.Some businessofaformalnaturehavingbeen transacted,theSecretarypreceededtoread theHalf-YearlyReport,whichwepublish below.AppendedtotheReportwasthe BalanceSheetoftheTreasurer.Thereadingofthesedocumentshavingbeenconcluded Mr.Lucas,theVice-PresidentoftheSociety roseandbrieflyremarkeduponthem.He thoughttheyshowedtheSocietytobeina verysatisfactorystatehoweverhewould observethatinhisopinionitdidnotfollow necessarilythatbecauseaSocietysuchas thishadabalancetoitscredit,itwasthereby inahealthycondition.WerethisaBenefit Society,thecasewouldbeadifferentone,and thefactoftheTreasurer'sholdingforthe Society,aconsiderablebalance,mightberegardedashighlysatifactory.ButtheobjectsofthisSocietywereverydifferentfrom thosepursuedbysocietiesofabenefitkind, andasregardedhimself,hewouldhave considereditevenamorehealthysign434: vitalityhadthebalancebeenontheother sideoftheaccount,andtheSocietyachieved moregoodeventhanithadalreadydone. TheadventoftheSistersofSt.Josephhas markedanewepochoneducationalmatters inAlbany.TheAssistedSchoolhasalready madenoteworthyprogressinpointof attendanceanddiscipline,andclasseshave beenformedforinstructioninhigher branchesthanthoseusuallytaughti ElementarySchools.TheaccomodationprovidedfortheSisters,thoughasmuchascoul possiblybeexpectedfromtheCatholic andpastorofAlbany,burdened,astheyhay beenoflate,withtheexpenseoftheerectio, ofanextensiveandcostlychurch,hasbee foundinadequatetotheincreasingdemand uponthemforspace.Desirousofextendin thissphereofusefulnesstheyhaverented largeandcommodiusbuilding,beautifull situatedatalittledistancefromtownonthe Perthroad,inwhichtheyintendtofixtheir residenceandtoreceiveboarders.Webu echothethoughtsofourreaders,wearesure, insayingwewishthegoodSistersevery successintheirlast,asinalltheirotherundertakings.

Cardinal.TheLecturewascertainlyareal LADYLIARS. treat,andassuch,wasevidentlyaccepted MissHELMES. byhisaudience.AttheterminationoftheThenextvisitwastotheYoungLadies' entertainment,theVicar-General,theVerySchoolwherethepupilswereasaem'aledand Rev.M.Gibney,returnedthankstothosewaitingtoreceivethevisitors.Immediately whohadtakenpartintheprogrammeofthemarchwasplayedandthechildrenwalked inlinesoftwoandtwo,anexercisevery pleasingtosee,andveryusefulinmany respects. theevening,andspokeinthehighestterms oftheadmirableLecturethattheyhadbeen favouredwiththatevening,onthe"Lifeand Times"ofCardinalWiseman,byMr. Reilly.Mr.Reilly,theVicar-General noticed,inintroductingtheprogramme oftheevening,hadaskedtheindulgenceof theaudience,buttheresulthadpleasingly shownthattherewasinrealitynooccasion forsuchanexpressionofdoubtordisplay ofmodesty,aseverythingthathadbeen donethateveningfortheiramusementand instruction,wasdecidedly,farremovedfrom mediocrity.Inconclusion,theVicarGeneralexpressedhishopethatMr.Reilly, whodisplayedsuchafamiliaritywiththe HistoryoftheperiodduringhisLecture, wouldfurtherdevelophissubject,andfavour thematnodistantdate,withsomething moreofthe"LifeandTimes"ofthegreat CardinalWiseman.Amongthenumberof thosewhowerepresentonthisoccasion,we noticedHisLordshiptheBishop,whowas pleasedtoexpresshimselfasmuchgratified withtheevening'sproceedings. OnMonday,the8thJuly,HisLordship theRightRev.Dr.Parry,(P.)Bishopof Perth,accompaniedoy theRev. Mr.Allen,LadyLeakeandMiss Helmes,visitedtheestablishmentofthe SistersofMercy,withtheschoolsand Orphanage.HisLordshipandpartyarrived shortlyafter10o'clock,andwerereceived attheCoventbytheRevd.Superioressand MotherAssistant,whoconductedthem throughthevariousroomsandcorridors, andintroducedthemtothenewandbeautifulprivateChapel.Thefavouredguests expressedthemselvesextremelygratifiedat theorderandneatnessthatwaseverywhere apparent,andmoreespeciallyadmiredthe Chapelwithstained-glasswindows,andhandsomestalls,andonleavingit,seemedmost favourablyimpressed.Thestair-caseand Community-roomalsoattractedparticular attention. Thepartythenproceededtovisitthe Orphanage,andinspectedthedormitories sighitssixty-sevenbeds,andadmirableproportionsthestudyanddiningrooms-the dressingandmachinerooms,andthekitchen. S.-UponreferencetotheTreasurer's BalanceSheet,annexedhereto,itwillbe foundthatthestateofthefinancesisin everyrespectsatisfactory;whilethenumberofmembersinattendanceatordinary weeklymeetings-theamountofzealdisplayedbythem,generally,inallmatters pertainingtothefurtheranceoftheSociety -andtheunprecedentednumberofcandidateswhohavebeenadmittedtotheenjoymentofmembershipwithinthepast half-year-alluniteinbearingtestimonyto thesoundstateoftheSocietyinother respects.

Itwillbegratifyingtothereadersofthe Recordtoknowthatanotherchurchhasjust beenaddedtotheseveralplacesofCatholic worshipinthisdistrict.Onthe30thJune last,thenewchapelofSt.Thomas,onthe BackGreenoughFlats,wasopenedand blessed,bytheRevd.FatherLECAILLE.The attendance,consideringthethreateningstate oftheweather,wasnumerousabovewhat mighthavebeenexpected.Thecollection however,owingchieflytothebadseasons whichhaveimpoverishedourfarmers,only realised£5ls.TheRevd.FatherLecaille attheendofhissermon,heartilycongratulatedthosepresentandtheCatholicsofthe districtingeneral,fortheliberalityandzeal wherebytheyhaveenabledhimtoraisein theirdistrictnolessthanfivechurchessince hisadventamongstthem,andhopedtheir zealwouldnotabate,asmuchmoreremains tobedone.Ithadbeenhishappiness,he said-andhefeltproudofit-tocelebrate thefirstMaasineachofthesefivechurches, whicharethechurchofSt..Peter's,onthe FrontFlats,thatofSt.Mary-in-Ara-Cteli, inNorthamptonofSt.FrancisXavier's,in GeraldtonofSt.John'satNorthBack Flats;andthatofSt.Thomas'sattheBack Flats,Central. NowitseemsveryhardthatFather Lecaillewouldthushaveexertedhimselfso longwithoutevergivingathoughttothe propriety dwelling-house forhimself.Eversincehecametothedistrict,hehaslivedeitherinotherpeople's housesorinnarrowuncomfortablesacristy roomsattachedtosomeofthechapels.I amhappytobearitrumouredtherefore,that itisintendedtocollectfundstowardsthe buildingofamodestcottageforhimona twoacreblockoflandjustgiventothe churchbyMr.Thos.Walsh,whoseliberality isnowforthethirdtimesimilarlymanifested-Mr.Walshhavingbeforegivingtwo otherparcelsoflandforchurchbuilding purposes.Thelastgiftoflandwhereonitis intendedtobuildapriest'shouse,atavery earlydate,aresituatedcloseandoppositeto St.Peter'schapel,fromwhichitis separatedbytheroadfromGreenoughto Geraldton,namely,GregoryStreet.Onthe samegroundtherev.gentlemanearnestly cherishesthehopeofseeingalsobeforelong, theprincipalchurchoftheGreenough erected,inaGothicstyle,andofasizeand plannotsurpassedbyanychurchinthe colony,St.Peter'schurchwillthenbeneed exclusivelyasaschool-room.

8.-YourCommittee,however,whilecongratulatingyouuponthemarkedimprovement discernibleinthegeneralconditionofthe Society,cannotrefrainfromexpressingtheir regretthatsomefewkfluentialmembers possessedofmuchabilityandcapableofrenderingthegreatestservicestotheSociety,scarcely, ifever,takeanypartinitsproceedings.

4.--Itislikewisematterofdeepregretto yourCommitteethatthefirst,andmost essentialrule-thatwhichprovidesforthe receptionbymembers,ofthesacramentsof PenanceandHolyCommunionatcertain specifiedtimes-hasnotbeeninsomeeases compliedwithevenwhereaconformitytoit wasanticipated.

5.-YourCommitteebegtoinformyou, thattheusualEuropeanandColonialnewspapershavebeenregularlyreceivedduring thepasthalf-year,andtogetherwithyour librarycontributedlargelytotheentertainmentandinstructionofmembers.

6.-Inpursuanceoftheinterestsofthe Society,yourCommitteetookthenecessary stepsfortheinitiationofaseriesofMonthy Re-unions.Thefirstofthesewasheldon the31stJanuary,andprovedanunqualified success.TheycompriseLectures,Readings, RecitationsandVoca,andInstrumental music,andhaveyourCommitteebelieve, Alreadyfavourablyimpressedthosemembers andtheirfriendsadmittedtothem.Andas preliminarieshavebeenarrangedforthe organisationofaDramaticCompanyin connectionwiththeSociety,yourCommittee trustthattheywillbecomeevenmore popularthantheynoware,andbeagreat sourceofinstructionandamusement.

UptothepresentnotonesingleCatholic school-househasbeenbuiltintheVictoria districtfortheexclusivepurposeofteaching buttheCatholicschoolsareheldinallplaces intherespectivechapels.Theestablishing andmaintainingofthose(five)schools, simultaneouslywiththeerectingofchurches throughthedistrict,haveproved,andstill prove,averyheavyburdenontheCatholic communityhere,andacauseofmuchanxiety totheirbelovedpastor,whooftenfound himselfingreatdifficultywhenbillshadto bemet.Inthefaceoftheseeverreturning difficulties,andseeinghowharditisforhim toobtainforeachandallofhisschools,the exorbitantaverageof20requiredbythelaw, beforeanAssistedschoolcanbeaidedby publicfunds,andthatwhensoassistedthese schoolsareonlypaidthehalfofwhatispaid totheGovernmentschools,FatherLxceu,ez haslatelyadoptedverystringentmeasureson theCatholicparentsunderhisjurisdiction, andhasalreadywarnedthemfromthe altarinseveralofthechurches,thatthey shallhereafterbestrictlyobservedthroughoutthewholeofthedistrict.Hehasthereforeforbiddensubgravi,andunderpainof beingdeprivedofthesacraments(except baptism),andofalltheotherministrations ofthechurch,let.,forallCatholicparentsto sendtheirchildrento,andforallCatholic childrentoattendanyGovernmentschool, oranyCatholicpublicschoolheldwithouthis exprruedapproval,wheneversuchparentsor childrenresidewithinadistanceofabout three(9)milesfromaschoolestablishedby him,andforthetimebeing,underhiecare andmanagement.2ndly.,foreachandany Catholic,maleorfemale,toholdaCatholic school,withouthay*previous4,obtainedhis suction,withinadistanceofaboutthree milesofanyschoolunder,hisimmediate management. Thismeasure,thoughitmayappearto sometonsevere,assomethingperhapsnew forthem,seemsjustandreasonable,when onedulyconsidersthecircumstancesofthe Catholicschoolsinthecolony.Itisex-

Dr.EASYrosetoproposethequestionofwhichhehadgivennoticeat theprevioussittingofConvocation:"Woulditbeconsideredheresyinthe ChurchofEnglandtodenytheexistenceofGod?"Ithadoccurredto himthatheshouldperhapsadopta formmoreconvenientforthepresent debate,ifheputthequestionthus:"Wouldaclergyman,openlyteaching thattherewasnoGod,beliableto suspension?"

ArchdeaconJOLLYthoughtnot. WhattheChurchofEnglandespecially pridedherselfuponwasthebreadthof herviews.Noviewcouldbebroader thantheonejuststated,andtherefore nonemorelikelytomeetwiththesanctionofthePrivyCouncil,which,he apprehended,wastherealpointtobe keptinviewinthediscussionofthis interestingquestion.(Hear,hear.)

ArchdeaconTHEORYwouldbedisposed cordiallytoapprovethejudgment whichthelearnedDeananticipated. Hehadalwaysmaintainedthatitwas thedutyofeveryAnglicantodoubt theexistenceofGod.(Uproar.)Let himnotbemisunderstood.Speaking forhimseif,hehadamoralandintellectualconvictionthattherewasa God.HewasnotdisputingtheobjectivetruthoftheexistenceofaGod: aboutthathecouldnotsupposethata singlememberofConvocationcould entertainthemosttransitorydoubt.He wasspeakingonlyoftheirdutyas membersoftheChurchofEngland, andnotatalloftheirobligationas Christians;twothingswhichmight happeninaparticularcuetobeas wideapartasthepoles,andtoinvolve distinctandoppositeresponsibilities. Now,asmembersoftheChurchof' England,hebelieveditwastheirduty todoubt,notonlytheexistenceofGod, butalsoeveryseparatearticlewhich theChurchofEnglandnowtaught,or mightteachhereafter;andthemore emphaticallytheChurchofEngland appearedtoteach,themoreimperative wastheirdutytodoubt.For,referringtotheingeniousargumentwhich DeanBlunthadputintothemouthof theirnationaloracle,itwasclearthat theChurchofEngland,indenyingher owninfallibility,laidallhermembers underthereligiousobligationofdoubtingeverythingshetaught.Fallibility, properlydefined,wasnotsimply liabilitytoerr,itwasthestateoferror. Asinfallibilityisastateofcertainty, whichdoesnotadmitoferror;so fallibilityisastateofdcubtwhichdoes notadmitofconviction.Now,the ChurchofEngland,inproclaimingher ownfallibility,didsowithaperemptoriness,whichelevatedthispartofher teaching,andthisalone,tothedignity ofdogmaForwhereasinpropounding otherAnglicantenets,shesoadjusted herdefinitionsofdoctrineastoleave thechoiceofpossibleandopposite interpretationstothediscretionofher members;whenspeakingofthis,the fundamentalaxiomofherwhole theologicalsystem,sheroseforthe momenttotheauthorityofaTeacher, andconsentedtoputontherobeofinfallibility,inordertopromulgatewith greaterforcethedogmaofherown liabilitytoerror.

DeanBluntconcurredintheopinion thatBreadthandthePrivyCouncil werekindredideas.Still,itmightbe asked,couldeventhedoctrinalelasticity ofthattribunalbecomesufficientlyexpansivetoembracetheenormous hypothesisofhislearnedfriend? He venturedtothinkthatitcould.Letit besupposedthatsomeclergymanof theChurchofEngland-saytheArchbishopofCanterbury-shouldpublicly teachthattherewasnoGod.Thecase beenbroughtbeforethePrivy Council,itmightbereasonablyassumed thatthatsupremeArbiterofAnglican doctrinewoulddeliversomesuchjudgmentasthefollowing

"WefindthattheChurchof Englandismotopposedtothe existenceofaGod.Atthe samelime,wecannotoverlookthefactthatthenineteenthArticle,inaffirming thatallchurches,eventhe Apostolic,haveerredin

Hewouldsolicitattentiontothe logicalresultsofthisaxiomofthe Anglicancreed.Wherethereisno infallibility,therecanbenothing certain,astheChurchofEngland wiselyintimates,except,ofcourse,the obligationofdoubting.Consequently, itisoneandthesamethingtosaythat weoughttodenytheChurch'sinfallibility,andthatweoughttodoubt whattheChurchteaches.Now,the ChurchofEnglandteachesthatthere isaGod.Thereforeitisthedutyof everyAnglicantodoubttheexistence ofaGod.Andwhatistrueofthis articleofbeliefistrueofeveryother. ThusiftheChurchofEnglandappear toteachthenecessityofBaptism,atthe sametimethatsheloudlydeclaresher ownfallibilityinjudgingofthat necessity,itwastheirdutyandprivilege (asthePrivyCouncilbadrecently ruled),todoubtthenecessityof Baptism.AndiftheChurchofEngland appeartoteachthatsheherselfisatrue Church,atthesametimethatsheprocleimsherownfallibilityinjudging whethershebeatrueChurchorno, andevenaddsthatthetruestChurches bareatalltimesgrosslyerred,itwas theirdutytodoubtthatshewas'atrue Church.Theyhad-nochoiceaboutthe matter.Itwastheirihrtytodoubt

andnoonewhoAidnotdoubtevery doctrineofhisChurchcouldbesaidto comprehendhernatureortobe animatedbyherspirit.This,then, washisanswertothequestionbefore theHouse:"Woulditbeheresyin anAnglicantodenytheexistenceof God?"Herepliedthatitmightbe heresytodenythefact,butthatitwas theplainestofalldutiestodoubt it. Andherehewouldhazardoneother observationonwhathehadventured tocallthecardinaldoctrineofthe Church'sfallibility.ItwasnotuncommoninthesedaysforAnglicansto becomeRomanCatholics.Didhe blamethem?AsaProtestantbemust answer,Yes;asanAnglican,No.He waswillingtobelievethattheywere guidedinthatactmainlybytheirunconsciousrespectfortheteachingofthe EnglishChurch.Foritwasobvious thatallwhoaredociletotheteaching ofthatChurchmustbesupremely devotedtoherdogmaoffallibility, sincethatdogmaisevidentlythemost fruitfulinitsconsequences,aswellas themostclearlydefined,inthewhole rangeofhertheology.Butitwas equallyclearthataslongasan AnglicanremainedintheChurchof England,hecouldgivenoadequate proofofhisbeliefinthisessential dogmaofherfallibility.Hemight believeit,orhemightnot.Butonce lethimleavetheChurch,andbythat acthemanifestedtotheworldhisfirm convictionthattheChurchofEngland wasfallible.Consequently,thehighest tributeanAnglicancouldpaytohis ownchurchwastogooutofher,and thebestproofhecouldgiveofbeliefin herteachingwastoconnecthimself withoutlossoftimewithsomeother communion.

obeyanytwoecclesiasticalauthorities atthesamemomentinvolvedtherisk ofbeingpronouncedahereticbyeither OneortheOther--because00two clergymenareexactlyofthesamebelief-theonlyeffectivesafeguard againstthepossibilityofheresywas personalobediencetooneclergymanat atime.LettheHouseobservehow admirablytheprinciplehewasabort todevelopeconciliatedrivalclaims, whileitobviatedeverydifficultyarising fromvarietyofdoctrine.Heargued, then,thatpersonalobedience,theprime dutyofeveryclergyman,wasalsothe remedyforeveryevil;andhebelieved thathehadcarriedoutthatprinciplein hisowncareer,inamannerwhichConvocationwouldapprove.

cureofsouls.Atfirstheventuredto suggestthateitherthebishoporthe rectorshouldresigninsteadofhimself, sincetheirdissensions,nothisdieobedience,werethesourceofallthis confusion.Butthisproposaldidnot meetwiththatcordialacquiescence whichliehadarighttoexpectfrom eitherofthepartiesconcerned. Next,heproposedtosubmitto thearbitrationofcompetentdivines,some suchproblemasthefollowing:-

DrVIEAVYhererose,andsaidthat hehadlistenedwithdeepinterestto theingeniousobservationsofhislearned friend.Theywere,perhaps,too rigidlyscientific,andpossiblydistasteful tosomeoftheircolleagues,buthe acceptedthemasavaluableprotest againstthatnarrowandRomanistic theology,whichArchdeaconChasuable, andafewothersamonghisreverend friends,wereanxioustointroduceinto theChurchofEngland.Forhisown part,hehailedtheaccessionofevery newviewtoreligionasevidenceboth ofthelegitimatefecundityoftheir NationalChurch,andofthepeculiar privilegesofhermembers.Itwasher glorytohaveproducedduringthree successivecenturiesteachersofevery shadeandvarietyofChristiandoctrine, andtohavesurvived,byamiracleof vitality,theirceaselessbattlesanddisputes,whichwouldhavedestroyeda lessvigorouscommunity,butwhich shehadalwaysserenelycontemplated withmaternalpride.Noother religioussocietywhichbadhitherto appearedintheworldcouldmakethe sameproudboast.Itwas,therefore, withsatisfactionthathewasaboutto communicatetotheHouseaviewof hisown,perfectlyinharmonywiththe wholehistoryoftheAnglicanChurch, thoughdifferingissomepointsfrom theonesoablyadvocatedbyArchdeaconTheory.Itwouldbefound, however,toprovideastillmoreeffectiveclueoutofthelabyrinthof Anglicandifficuities,avaluableguide, ifhemightbeallowedtosayso,tohis youngerbrethren,andacomplete answertothequestionindebate: "WoulditbeheresyintheChurchof Englandtodenytheexistence ofGod?"(Marksoflivelyattention.) AsanAnglicanclergyman,hehad alwaysfeltboundtoteachwhatever theChurchofEnglandmightbe supposedtoteach.(Applause.)But asthatChurch,whetherinterpretedby herclergyorherformularies,was tauntedbyherenemieswithteaching everythinganddenyingeverythingat thesametime,(oratleastwithpermittingeveryimaginablecreedfromtranscendentalPoperydowntothebaldest Calvinism),itbecamenecessaryfora youngclergyman,whowouldshelter himselffrontthepossibilityofheresy, tocentrethewholeofhisobediencein thatonebishoporrector,underwhom forthetimebeinghemightfindhimselfplaced.Inotherwords,sinceto

Whenfirstordainedtotheofficeof theDiaconate,fromwhichhehadbeen subsequentlyelevatedtounmerited dignities,hefoundhimselfinthediocese ofaLow-Churchbishop,-hemightsay averyLow-Churchbishop,-solow thatanyfurtherdescentintotheregions ofapurelynegativetheologywould haveleftnodoctrinalresiduumwhatever.Heatoncedecided,invirtueof hisprincipleofobediencetoauthority, toteachhisflockthereligionofhis bishop;which,bycarefulanalysis,he resolvedintotwoarticlesofbelief-the denialofdogma,andtheassertionof self.(DeanPompousaudiblywhispered "highlyunbecoming.")Butherehe hadmetwithadifficultyatstarting forithappenedthathisrectorwasa Puseyite;andthat,consequently,in themain,whateverthebishoptaught tobetrue,therectortaughttobe false,andwhateterthebishoptaught tobefalse,therectortaughttobe true.Thecase,asConvocationknew, wassocommoninthiscountry,asto formperhapstheruleinamajorityof parochialcures.Hisprinciple,however,suggestedaneasyescapefrom theembarassingposition.Hoapplied itthus Manifestlymoreobedience wasduetoabishopthantoarector; yetacertainquantumofobediencewas duetoarector,ifonlybecauseabishop hadappointedhim.Itbecame,soto speak,aquestionofproportion,rather thanoftheology,andwassoluble,not bytheThirty-NineArticles,butbythe ruleofthree;andafterworkingitout withreligiouscare,thefollowingcommendeditselftohimasthesolutionof theproblem.HewouldpreachLowChurchdoctrinesontheSundays, denyingthesacramentalviewandall itsconsequences,asthehomageof clericalobedienceduetothebishop; buthewouldteachHigh-Church doctrinesduringtheweek,without abatingasingletenet,indischargeof theproportionatemeasureofobedience duetotherector.Thispracticegave rise,hewasboundtoadmit,tosome excitementintheparish,andledtothe popularconvictionthathoweverexcellenthisteachingmightbeindetail, therewasawantofunityaboutitwhen lookedatasawhole.Yetwhenhe explainedtohisparishonersthepurity ofthemotivewhichinducedthe apparentcontradictions,andprovedto themthathisduplexsystemwas designedonlytoreflectjustlyand proportionately.thetwoaspectsof Christianityexhibitedbytheirbishop andtheirrector,thewholeparishat onceapplaudedthedelicacyofhisconscience,whileitceasednottoquestion thevalueofhisteaching.Andso thingswentonwithtolerableharmony forthespaceofayear;when,unhappily,boththebishopandtherector diedaboutthesametime;theformer beingquicklyreplacedbyaHighChurchbishop,appointedbyafriendin theCabinet,andthelatterbyaLowChurchrector,nominatedbyMr. Simeon'strustees.Itnowbecamehis duty,inconsistencywithhisprinciple ofobediencetopersonalauthority,to inverttheorderandproportionofhis teaching.Hewouldcontinuetogive theSundaystothebishop,andthe week-daystotherector;butonSundayshemustnowbeaPuseyite,andon week-daysanEvangelical;andthis simpleinversion,soequitableinitself, andinspiredsolelybythedesireof submittinghimselftohissuperiors, createdsuchdiscordintheparish,that finallyhewasentreated,astheonly meansrestoringpeace,toresignhis

"GivingthevalueofcertainPuseyite doctrines,withtheirEvangelicaleontraries,tofindameanChristianity;" andheboundhimselftoacceptthe resultantofhisfuturestandardoforthodoxy.Butthearbitrators,aftersitting forseveraldays,(duringwhichthey wereprincipallyoccupiedinunavailing attemptstoconvertoneanother),abandonedthetaskindespair;alleging thattherewasnothingsufficientlydefiniteineithervaluetoadmitoftheir findingamean. Hardpressedinthisemergency,but morethaneversolicitoustosustainthe greatprincipleofhisecclesiasticallife, hehadrecoursetoatotallynewidea. Itsohappenedthatthebishopwhohad ordainedhimbyLettersDiruissoryfrom hisowndiocesanwasneitherHighChurchnorLow,butoftheModerate orBroad-Churchschool,andchieflyremarkableforthezealwithwhichhe warnedhiscandidatesforordersagainst "extremes."Noneoftheseamiable youngLevitescouldcalltomindthat hislordship,whowasofnoblebirth, hadeveraddressedtothemanyinjunctionmoreapostolicthanthis"avoid extremes."Hethereforebeggedthathe mightbepermittedtotransferhis obediencetothatbishopfromwhomhe hadoriginallyreceivedwhatamodern writerhadplayfullycalled"thedivine commissionnottoteach."Thiswould enablehim,whilefaithfultotheobligationofclericalobedience,totakeupan independentpositioninhisownparish; andsotopreachhenceforth,inaquiet andgentlemanlyway,againstbothhis bishopandhisrector,thusavoidingall invidiousdistinctions. Unhappily, eachfreshattemptatconciliationwas lesssuccessfulthanthelast;andhe wasjustonthepointofresigninghis curacyindispel;whenavaluedcounsellor,theirdistinguishedfriendand colleague,Dr.Easy,conveyedtohim anopportunesuggestion.Thatpopular divine,whohadrisenparipassewith himselftothehighestsummitsoftheir Zion,advisinghimtopromiseboth bishopandrector,asafinaleffortto preserveobedienceunimpaired.thathe wouldinfutureabstainfrompreaching anyparticularkindofChristianity,or fromapproachinganydoctrinetowhich anybodycouldobjectonanyground whatever-amethod,Dr.Easyassured him,whichwasadoptedbyalarge numberofnimbleandwell-bredclergymenintheChurchofEngland.Not aversehimselftoanyarrangement whichmightmeetwiththeapprovalof authorities,beembodiedthisideaina fourthproposaltobothbishopand rector,whowerepleasedtoacceptit withdecentcordiality,thoughwithout anyshowofenthusiasm.Andfrom thatdayforwardtriumphinginhis sovereignprincipleofobedienceto personalauthority,hoflatteredhimself thatnotthefaintesttraceofanypositivedoctrinecouldbefoundinanypart ofhisteaching.

OurexcellentAmericancontemporary,AveMaria,inoneofaseriesof "ReminiscencesofthelatePontiff, tellsastrangestoryabouthismeeting withLouisNapoleonwhenyetbut ArchbishopofSpoleto.Itwasinthe year1831thatabodyofinsurgents burstintothecitycarryingterrorto thequietinhabitants.Theinsurrectionwasspeedlyputdown,andlittle mercywasshowntothemiserable wretcheswhoparticipatedinit.One evening,whenthestreetsofSpoleto wereechoingwithfiercecriesoftheoffendingpeople,theArchbishopsatinhis studyponderinginsadnessontheevils engenderedbyhumanpassion. Toblamethewilfulnessofthepropagandismthatdisturbstheserenityof ourselvesandofourcontemporariesis toexposetheshallownessofourconceptionsofthemovementofhuman life.Thereisaleaventhatcannotbe restrained.Thereisalightpenetratingtheencirclinggloomwhichthe wandererdarenotrefusetofollow.
