ADIAMONDWEDDING.

Averyrareevent,hasjusttakenplace atBreval(Seine-et-Oise).Afewdays agoM.andMme.Gourdin-Duhamel,surroundedbytheirchildren,grandchildren, great-grand-children,andnumerous relativesandfriends,celebratedthe sixty-fifthanniversaryoftheirmarriage.

Attheconclusionofthedinner,M. Gourdin,whois93yearsofage,sang asongwhichliehadwrittenforthe occasion,andMme.Gourdin,whois 83,openedtheballwithonoofher grandsons,dancingasvis-a-vistoone ofhergreat-grand-daughters.Another younglady,inthesamedegreeof relationshiptotheoldpeople,playedthe piano.

BEERANDWHISKEYANDCHURCH BUILDING.

Beerandwhiskeyhavecometothe rescueoffastlydyingoutIrish Protestantism,andtheProtestantism ofIrelandrejoiceth.Notwithstanding themillionsofmoneywhichtheclergy ofthedefunct"EstablishedChurch" inIrelandhavequietlypocketedby meansofMr.Gladstone'sdisestablishmentanddisendowmentmeasure, neithertheynoreventhemembersof theirseveralcongregationswouldgive apennytowardsthepreservationofthe St.Patrick'sandChristchurchCathedrals,andonlyforGuinness,the brewer,andRoe,thewhiskeymanufacturer,thetwobuildingswouldhave beenallowedtodropintoruins,To whatavastamountofdesecrationthese oncesacrededificeshavebeensubjected Andpowtohaveastheironlyfriends andpropsbeerandwhiskey! Canthe fruitsofthe"Reformation"go muchfurtherinitsinsultsto Christianity?

MRS.GRANTANDPOPELEOXIII.

Anannouncementhasjustcomewith startlingeffectasfollowsfromRometo Washington:-"WhenMrs.Grantwas presentedtothePopesheaskedhimto blessforherasilvercrosswhichherhusbandhadgivenherwhentheycelebrated theirsilverweddingatLongBranch, inAugust,1873.Shesaidonaccount ofitsbeingherhusband'sgiftonthe twenty-fifthanniversaryoftheirmarriage,shefeltittobeparticularly sacred,anddesiredthePopetoblessit forher,whichhedid."Onreceiving thisshockingintimation,saysthe CatholicReview,thementalagonythat "Chaplain"Newmanand"Bishop" Simpsonexperiencedmusthavebeen intense.Herearetwomostunpleasant revelationsItwasbadenoughthat PresidentGrant-themanwhomthe Methodistshadlookeduponastheir Own,andwhomtheyhadwishedto paradebeforethecountryasachampion ofpureProtestantprinciples-itwas badenoughtofindthathehadgivento hiswifeasaweddingsouveniracross; theveryemblemofPopery! Butto learnalsothatshehadcarriedthis idolatrousandsuperstitiousarcticleto Rome,hadtakenittothe"ManofSin," andhadbesoughthim"tobless"itfor her-this,indeed,isterribleI What doesitmean?ArenottheAbana,and thePharphar,riversofDamascus, betterthanallthewatersofIsrael?If Mrs.Grantmusthaveacross,andmust haveitblessed,whydidshenotget BishopSimpsonorChaplainNewman toblessitforher,insteadofhidingit forfiveyearsandthentakingittothe

Popeforthatpurpose?Butinthe Methodistmindallthismatterof "crosses"and"blessings"isthevilest superstition;andMrs.Grantmustbo lookeduponbythebrethernasonthe highroadtoperdition.Perhapsher sad'Lylefittpathepuregospelof Methodismmaybeduetotheevilexample oftheladywhoisthusspokenofinthe sameWashingtonlettertotheDaily Graphic:-"Mrs.LouisDent,the widowofthelateJudgeDent,willsoon sailforEuropewithherchildren,and willremaintheresuperintendingtheir education.SheisaCatholic,andis Mrs.Grant'sfavouriterelative.She ispassingthisweekinretreatinaconventatBaltimore."

PROTESTANTFUNERALSINIRELAND.

TheCatholicsofIrelandhavebeen vindicatedfromashamefulaspersion recentlycastuponthembyanevening contemporary,whichsaid,withreferencetoLordLeitrim'sfuneral,that, asabody,theIrishCatholicsshowno respectwhatevertothegraveofa Protestant.Inmakingthatmostuncalled-forassertion,astheDailyTelegraphremarks,theasperseroftheIrish therebybroughtdownuponhimselfa delugeofdenialandrefutation.The historian,Mr.Lecky,amongothers, borewitnessthateveryonowhoknew Irelandwasawarethattheassertion wasuntrue,quotingthememorial raisedbytheCatholicteneutrytothe lateMr.Herbert,ofMuckross,asa clearprooftothe3ontrary.Lord Inchiquinwrote-"ThefuneralofProtestantsarenearlyalwaysattendedby largenumbersofCatholics,andtheir gravesaretreatedwithequalrespect,"

TheMarquisofWaterfordandLord Leconfieldgavethesametestimony.

TheRev.W.G.Carroll,aProtestant clergymaninDublin,says-"Inever knewaninstanceofCatholichostility ordisrespectataProtestantfuneral." Itisthussatisfactory,astheTelegraph remarks,todiscoverthatthescenesat LordLeitrim'sfuneral,greatlyexaggeratedinthefirstreport,wereexceptional, partlydue,nodoubt,tothepeculiar circumstancesofthecareerandfateof thedeceased,andpartlytotheneighborhoodinwhichtheplaceofinterment lies.ThesimplefactthatinIreland thelawofburialpermitsallkiadsof religiousservicesinthesamechurchyardwouldinitselfindicatethat,high assectarianfeelingrunsduringlife,it is,asarule,subduedinthepresenceof death.ProtestantsandCatholicslie sidebyside.Onedaythepriestreads aserviceonthenext,oratanother hourofthesameday,heisfollowedby theparson.Itisalsoacuriousfact that,whiletheotherservicesofthe EstablishedChurchareneverheardby themassofthepeople,theBurialService -themostbeautifulpartofitsliturgy isconstantlylistenedto,andinvariably withrespect,bylargeopen-aircongretionsofCatholics.

FA.THERCURCI.

FatherCurci,inaletteraddressedto theHolyFatheronthe29thApril, hasplacedatthefeetofhisHoliness thecompletestretractation.The VenerableJesuittheologian,writing underdateRome,the29thApril,1878, says:-"MostHolyFither,-The priestCharles-MarieCurci,knowing thatoccasionforscandalhasarisen fromafewofhisrecentwritingsand acts,aspiousandlearnedpersonages havepointedouttohim,anxious,on hispart,toremoveeventheshadowof offence,comestomathimselfatthe kerofyourHolinesstodeclarethathe

adheres,fullyandwithoutanyrestriction,withmindandheart,toallthe prescriptionsoftheCatholicChurch, andinparticularofalltheSovereign Pontiffs,andagainquiterecentlyin respecttowhatyourHoliness,inyour .recently-publishedEncyclical,teaches inregardtothetemporalpowerofthe HolySee.Hedeploreseverygrief thathiswritingsandactsmayhave causedyourHolinessandyourpredecessor,havingalwaysentertainedthe mostsincerefeelingsoffilialhomageand ofeverydocileobediencetowardsthe VicarofJesusChrist,towhomhesubmitshisjudgment,asuntothelegitimateandsolelycompetentjudgeofall thatbelongstothetrueusefulnessand thetrueadvantageoftheChurch, andtothewelfareofsouls.Hedesires tomakethisdeclarationasasincere Catholic,suchashehasalwaysbeen anstillis;andwhilsthewithdraws allthatyourHolinesswoulddeem worthyofoensure,hecommitshimself entirelytoyourHoliness'skeeping, readytofolloweverywhereandatall timesyourHoliness'sinfallibleguidance.-Charles-MarieCurci,Priest." UponthisnobleandtrulyCatholic documentasinglewordofcomment inthisplacewouldbesuperfluous.

ANCIENTAFRICANDISCOVERY.

Whilethelifeofamodernmissionary inAfricahasbeenshown,andthat,too, atatimewhentheworldisringingwith thegreatdiscoveriesandthevaluable additionsmadetoourknowledgeof geographyinAfrica,ithasbeenfound thatmuchofwhatissupposedtobe newhasbeenalreadyknown.Inthe libraryofLyonsamagnificentterrestrialglobe,twometresindiameter,the workofFatherGregoryandofFather Bonaventure,religiousoftheThird OrderofS.Francis,isfoundtocontainmanycountries,andrivers,and lakeswhichhavebeendiscoveredagain inourownday.Thisglobewasconstructedtowardstheendoftheseventeenthcentury.Underthenameof FatherGregorywasconcealedfromthe worldtheveryableandcelebrated mechanicianHenriMarchaud,ofthe AcademyofLyons,borninthatcity in1673,andwhodiedatMarseillesin 1750.

Strangetosay,onthisglobeare markedinredcolourDarfurandCordofun,themountainsAl-Kamar-those celebratedmountainsnearwhichthe Nilerises-andbeforethesemountains thelakesAlbertandVictoria,recently discoveredbytravellersandexplorers whosenameshavebeenpraisedwith acclamationthroughouttheworld.

"Stanley,Burton,Speke,Livingstone,andBaker,"writestheUnita Catcolica,"haveacquiredglorious namesbyhavingbeenthefirstwho have,intheirperilousjourneyings,met withtheseinternalseasofAfrica;Nand yetherearethesetwoseasalready indicatedonamapoftheworld(or globe)200yearsago.Theyaredepictedthereunderoureyeswiththeir islands,theiraMuents,andtheirmouths. ThethirdlaketowardstheWest,the Tanganyika,whichwastheobjectof newandrecentdiscoveries'islikewise indicatedhere,asarealsothesources andcoursesoftheZambesi,ofthe Congo,andofallthat,networkofrivers andtorrentswhichhaveraisedsomuch talkinthejournals."

Thewonderisthatthisglobe,inthe libraryofLyons,wasnotknowntofile learnedandscientificworld,andthat voyagersandtravellershadnotfollowed inthelinesmarkedbyFatherBonaventareandFatherGregoryintracingthe sourcesofthegreatEuptianriver. TheUniteasks Wheredidthese

twomonksacquiretheirknowledge? Whohadtracedoutforthemt'etopographyofthatpartoftheworldwhich wasthoughttobeunknown? Had theyintheirhandsthosemysterious mapswhichareattributedtothePortugueseJesuits,towhomneallythe wholeuniverso.wasknownHadthey theaidofthoseothertravellerswho werethefirstcourageousheraldsofthe Gospel?Weknownot,buttheirwork exists,andprovesthatallthediscoveries,allthesciences,allknowledgeis notborninthesedays.Thatprecious treasureoftheLyonslibraryshould attracttheattentionofthescientific world,whichshouldshedthehomage ofitsgloryonthesemodestreligious, who,differentfromSOmanyothers, haveneversoughtit,buthavemerited itinabundance."

THEOBLIGATIONOFNOTTEACHING IRRELIGION.

Itwasasomewhatdifficultpoint whichhadtobedecidedbytheMaster oftheRollsontheappealoftheRev. FrankBesant.Thequestiontobe adjudicatedwasofthiskind When doesamotherexhibitsufficient irreligiontodisentitlehertothecareof herchild? Doesshedosobythe publicationofbadbooks,orbythe inculcationofinjurioussentiments,or bynotteachingordinaryreligious principles,andbythegeneralwithholdingofreligioustraining? Would anyoneofthoseoilpeesconstitute impediment,orwoulditbenecessary thattheyshouldallbeprovedagainst her? Vromthejudgmentofthe MasteroftheRolls,weshouldconclude thatanyoneofthemwouldbesufficient. Weconfesstobeinggratifiedbythe homagetoChristianitywhichis renderedbytheargumentsofthe Master.Henotonlyurgedthattobe theauthoressofbadbooksdisentitleda mothertoprotectherchild,butthat themerewithholdingofareligious educationwasanoficricewhichwould constitutedisability.Thefactthat Mrs.Besanthadprohibitedher governessfromgivingthechildany religiouseducationwasinitselfa justificationforremovingthechildfrom thecustodyofsounnaturalaparent. TheMasteroftheRollssaidthata girlwouldbeunfittedtoassociatewith ordinarymembersofsociety,fromthe merefactthatshehadbeentaughtthat tobelieveinaGodwasnotanessential ofthefemininemind.

Itwasafortunateprovisowhichwas appendedtothe"InfantsCustody Act,"thattheCourtshouldnot sanctionanyarrangementbetween parents,inregardtothecustodyof theirchildren,"ifitwouldnotbefor thebenefitoftheinfanttogiveeffect thereto."Beforethepassingofthat Actitwasnotcompetenttoafatherto divesthimselfoftherightofcustodyof hischildren;or,byadeedofseparation, tohandoverhischildrentothecustody ofthemotheralone.Suchanarrange.. mentisnowlawful,buttheCourt holdsthepowertoadjudicateonits proprietyorreasonableness.The MasteroftheRolls,inexercisingthis power,hasdoneaservicetoall membersofsociety.Hehasvindicated therightofchildrentobereligiously educated,whethertheirparentschoose sobescepticsorpap*Itmaynot dotostretchthisjudgmentbeyondits actuallimits,ortoseektomakeit meanmorethanitexpresses.Itmay notdo-tosaythatthejudgment obligesallgnglishparentstobringq,p theirchildrenasChristians;foritdoe, notdothis;itonlyassertsthatall EnglishpaCcotsmusttombsomesortof religiontoIlaArchildrenlorratherthat

theymustnotwithholdit,orpermit thewithholdingitbyothers.AJew mayteachhischildrentobeJews,and ahereticmayteachhischildrentobe heretics;butnoEnglishmanmay teachhischildrenimmorality.We regardthisasaConstitutionalgain.It isnoteverycountrywhichcanboast it;noteveneveryChristiancountry. IfMrs.Besanthasdonesomeharmto society,shehasunintentionallyconferred onitsomegond;foritissomethingto haveitassertedbyaCourtofFinal Appealthatparentsmustpermit religiontotheirchildren.Whatever theirprivatetenets,itistheobligation ofallparentstoacceptthepostulatesof beliefandofmorals.Theyareforbidden bylawtorevilethem.Somepersons mayregretthat,withsuchexcellent principles,thelawcannotgoalittle further.

THEPRINCEOFWALESINPARIS.

ThePrinceofWaleshaswongelden opinionsfromallsortsofmeninParis byhisgenerouswordsinregardto Franceatthegrandbanquetgivenby theBritishexhibitorstihisRoyal Highness,andatwhichtheEarl Granvillesogracefullypresided. Addressinghisfellowcountrymenthere assembledintheFrenchcapital,the Heir-ApparenttotheCrownofEngland remarked:-"Iamgladtothinkthat weshouldhavemetherethisevening inacountryandinacitywhichhas alwaysreceivedEnglishmenwithsuch hospitality,andthoughnotmanyyears agotherewa§atimewhenwewerenot sofriendlyaswearenow,stillthese timesarepastandforgotten.The jealouslywhichwasthecauseGfthat enmityhasnow,Ifeelsure,ceasedfor ever,andIamconvincedthatthe ententecordialewhichexistsbetween thiscountryandourownisonenot likelytochange.Beforesittingdown," continuedhisRoyalHighness,"Ibeg tocalluponyoutofillyourglassesand drinkwithmeatoastwhichIknow youwilldrinkwiththegreatest cordiality,andthatis,TheFrench Executive.'"Thenturninghithe midstoftheloudapplausethosewords awakened,andaddressinghimselfin theirownlanguagetotheFrenchmen arothidhim,thePrinceadded:-"C'est avecnngrandplaisirquejeviens remeicierlanationfrancaise,tenten monnomqu'aunomdelaCommission RoyaleBritannique,detoutcequ'ellea fait,andj'ail'honneurdevousdemander d'acceptermesremerciementscomme unternoignagepublicdelamaniere gracienseandcourtoiseaveclaquelle vousnonsavezpretevotrecontours. (Loudapplause.)Vousvoudrezdone Lienin'accorderlafaveurd'accepterici cetteexpressiondemonopinionpersonelle.L'ExpositionUniversellede 1878estsanscontreditungrandsucces aussiperniettez-moidevousdireetde direhlaFranceentierequelaprosperitedecepaysetcelledelaGrandeBretagneoutuninteretessentiellement reciproque.Laparticipationcordiale apporteeautriomphedesartsdans cetteluttepacifiqueestdelaplushaute importancepournosdeuxnationset pourlemondeentier.L'Exposition Internationaledanslaquellenousavons tenuaprendreonelargepartestle meilleurmoyendesympathiequenous puissionsdonneraupeuplefrancais auquelnousdevonstaut."Needlessto say,thecordialsentimentsthusgracefullyandgraciouslyarticulatedwere greetedwithloudandcontinuedcheering.TheDebats,incommenting uponthelanguageofhisRoyalHighness,says,"Thefeelingsoftheheirto theCrownofEnglandtowardsour countryhadlongbeenknown,but never,perhaps,hadtheybeenmanifested sovividlyandwithsomuchfervour. AllmyheartiswithFrance,'said thePrince.Allwhoarepresentknow thatallmywishesareforthegreatness andprosperityofFrance The Constitutionalinlikemannerrecognizes iuthewordsofhisRoyalHighnessthe factthattheyexpressthepersonal sentiments,notonlyofthePrince himself,butofQueenVietosia,'andofa veryconsiderableportionalsoofthe Englishpeople.

ANARTIFICIALLARYNZ.

Dr.Foulia,ofGlasgow,,exhibitedto theMedicalSocietyofLondonrecently aremarkableapplicationbyhimofan artificiallarynz.JamesHouston,a clothworker,29yearsofage;anative ofCampsea,nearGlasgow,hanamalignantsarcomatoustumourinhislaryns whichobstrnctedrespiration.Ithad twicebeenremovedbyopeningthe larynzandtakingitout,butithad recurred,andfromitsmalignantcharacterwouldhaveproduceddeathifthe operationwhichDr.Foulisdescribed badnotbeenperformed.Thelarynx hasbeenentirelytakenoutandan artificialonesubstituted.Thepatient wasproducedatthemeetingofthe MedicalSociety;heconversedwiththe membersandreadtothemeetinga passagefromthePrayer-book.The operationofremovingthelarynzwas firstperformedbyBillroth,ofVienna, in1873,andthefirstattemptatsupplyinganewlarynzwasmadeforBillroth'spatientbyGussenbour'swhose originalinstrumentwasshownatthe meeting.Theinstrumentnowwornby JamesHoustonis-animprovementof Gussenbour'sbyDr.Irvine,ofGlasgow.ThisisthefirsttimetheoperationhasbeenperformedinEngland. Ithasbeententimestriedonthe Continent,withvaryingsuccess.The presentisthemostseccessfulcase,the patientbeinginbetterhealththanhe hadexperiencedformanymonths. Thedeliberateandcarefulmannerin whichtheoperationwasperformedin thiscaseprobablyaccountsforthe successfulresult.Carewastakento introduceatubeintothewindpipeas soonasitwascutacross,andbelowthe seatofdisease,sothatnobloodcould getintothelungsduringthefurther stepsoftheoperation.Dr.Foulisthus hadampletimetothoroughlyaccomplishtheremovalofthelarynz.The wholeoperationoccupied21hours,the patientbeingundertheinfluenceof chloroform.Recoveryhasbeenuninterrupted,andthereisnoappearance whateverofrecurrence.Themanis quitefitforlightofficework.The larynzsuppliedtohimconsistsoftwo tubes,oneofwhichgoesdownwardsto thetracheaandtheotherupwardsto themonth.Thepatientcantalkina whisperwithoutthesetubes,butwhen areed-plateisslippedintoagroovein thelowertubearesonatesoundisproducedwhichismodulatedintoletters andwordsbythemouth.Thearticulationwithorwithoutreelsisperfect. Thereedsaremadeofmetal,vulcanite, ivory,born,&c.,andthepatienthimselfisfondofmakingreedswhichgive hisvoicenewandsurprisingtones. Thevoiceisamonotone,varyingin timbreaccordingtothereedused.The sound-wavesofthepatient'svoiceof Kcenig'smirroraresimilartothoseof othervoices,aswasshownbyMr.Ward withthemirrorlentbyMr.Spottiswood()atthemeetingoftheMedical Society.

LORDOTAGANONEDUCATION.

endoWmentsoveragain,foritwas difficultissaythatacollegesuch asthatcouldbeabsolutelywhatit oughttobewithoutendowments. ItwasbyeducationthattheCatholics inEnglandmightrisetotheirproper level.Therewasintheworldaflood ofdismalanddesolatingdoctrinewhicn soughttomakeanegationofthehuman conscienceandtodragtheAlmighty HimselffromHisthrone.Therewas aprevalenceofinfidelopinionssuchas neverwasexhibitedbefore,andthe timehadcomewhentherewouldbea death-strugglebetweenthetruthsof Christianityandthefalsehoodsof Atheism,andhebelievedthatinthis struggletheCatholicChurchmustbe thevictor.Ifreligionwastobemaintainedinthiscountrywithouta vigorousandconsciontiously-maintained systemofpositivedogma,itwouldbe impossibletoencountermaterialisticinfluences.ItwasthedutyofCatholics toavailthemselvestothefullestextent ofinstitutionssuchasthatwhich guardedthefaithofthechildand secureditsprogress.HisLordshipalso referredtothehighpositiontakenin therollsoftheLondonUniversityby Stoneyhurst,whichwasforemostamong schools.

SOMETHINGNEWINRAILROADS.

halftheexpenseuponordinaryroads, mastbeagreatandnotableachievement.Theroadcost4,500per mile.Thetrainsrunabout20miles perhour.Enginesweighabout8 tons,anddrawtwopassengerandtwo freightcarstwiceperdayeachway,ata costofcoalonlyone-fourththatof ordinaryengines.

SCHILLERONTHEUNWAVERINGPOLICY OFTHECATHOLICCHURCH.

Lord011agan,ex-LordChancellor ofIreland,spokeattheprizedistributionatSt.FrancisXavier'sCollege, Liverpool,onFriday.Hesaidthatin Irelandtheyhadlostamultitudeof schoolswhichinoldtimesinstructed thepeopleinclassicalliteratureand generalknowledge,whilethemiddleclassschoolswhichexistedinformer days,throughtheoperationofthegreat Statesystem,hadbeenmoreorless abolished.Thusagreatevilexistedin Ireland-awantof'intermediateeducation.InreferencetotheGovernment measuretoremedythatdefect,though hewasnotassociatedwiththatGovernment,hecouldpromisethemthatif theirmeasurewasafairandhonestone therewouldnotbeanypartyfeeling aboutit,andallhonestmeninIreland wouldgivethemtheirsupport.In competitiveexaminationsintheCivil ServicetheIrishhadmorethantheir place.TheEnglishCatholicshad beendeprivedofthoseendowments whichtheirfathersgaveforthe purposesofeducation,andwhichwere enjoyedbyothers.Hehopedthe Catholicswouldfollowtheexampleof thegoodoldpeopleandmakethe

Thereis"somethingnewunderthe sun"inrailroads,asappearsfromone oftheNewYorkpapers,whichgivesan accountofaverynarrowgaugethathas beenexperimentallycompletedin Massachusetts. Theyounggentleman,wearetold, whoconceivedthisnewplanisa practicalwoodandironmachinist,and alsoanengineer,Toshowhownarrow atrackmaybe,andbepracticaland safe,withhisownhandsbeconstructed arailroad,havingbuttenincheswidth oftrack,fromtheelevatedvillageof HydeParkdowntothedepot.He also,withhisownhands,constructed thecarstorunonthetrack.Inthese becarriedinsixweeksover3,00i) passengersfromthevillagedowntothe &pit,withouttheslightestinjurytoany one.Therewereseveralshortcurves ontheway,andthetrackcrossedthe highwaytwice.Thepeopleof Billerica,wishingaroadacrossthrough theirtownfromNorthBillerica,onthe BostonandLowellRtilroad,toBedford, adistanceof84miles,startedamovementtogetapetitionforacharterfrom theLegislature.Thecharterwas allowed.Thentherightofwaywas securedgratisthewholedistance.Two veryablemengavethewayonly because,astheysaid,itwasavisionary, crazy-headedscheme,andwouldnever beaccomplished.Butnextthestock of$-50,000wassubscribed.Then camethebuildingoftheroad,which wascompletedbySeptember1,sothat carspassedwithpassengersoverthe entireroutethatday,andsecuredthe rightofway.Thereare11bridgeson theroute,oneover100feetlong.The railweighs25'lbs.totheyard,whichis quitestrongenough:20lbs.woulddo. TheAngelusinSpainhasbeenthus beatifullydescribedbyaProtestant traveller:-"Atsunrisealarge,softtonedbellisthricetolledfromthetower ofthecathedralsummoningallthe inhabitants,whereevertheyareor howeveroccupied,todevoteafew

momentstotheperfirmanceofashort" prayerinhonouroftheBlessedVirgin, calledthe'AngelusDomini?Atmidday,andatthecloseoftheeveningthe bellthricetollsagain.ToafbreIgnerit iscuriousandnotuninterestingto observethesuddenandferventattention whichispaidinthestreets,withinand withoutdoors,intheAlameda,onthe river,byeverybody,highandlow,the idlerandthelabourer,infancyandage, tothissolemnsound.Theloiterersinthe promenadeallsuddenlystop,andeach grouprepeatswithinitsowncirclethe consolingprayer.Thepoliticianbreaks onhisargument,theyoungmenare abashedintheirgaydiscourse,and takeofftheirhats,thecarriagesare drawnup,allworldlybusinessand amusementsareforgottenforabout threeminutes,tillthecheerfultinkling oflighterbellsannouncesthattheorison isover."

York,emulatingthewisdomofthe Port,hadevenatanearlierdate,manifestedadesireofimitatingtheexample shownit.Arequisitionformwasfor sometimeinactualcirculationand severalsignaturesaffixedtoit,attested therealityandextentoftheadhesion tothemovement.Butinsomeunaccountableway,assurprisingtous,asit wasunusualinthequarterofwhich wewrite,thedocumentfellthrough subsequently.Wearetooperfectly cognizantoftheenergy,courage,and capabilitiesofourEasternfriends,to believeforonemomentthatthemeasurestakenup,aromorethentemporarilysuspended.Yetwemustpoint out-andwedosowithsomeregrettothoseinterestedinthematter,how theindolenceoftheapathetichaslost toYorkthecreditofbeingsecondin thefieldintheinitiationofaworkof somuchimportancetotheCatholic bodyinthiscolony,andthehonourof beingthefirstinW.Australiatocarryon abranchoftheHibernianAustralasian CatholicBenefitSocietyunderthe auspicesandtitleofIreland'sApostle. Undertakingtoreviewsoearly-indeedwemightsay,soprematurelytheworkingoftheassociationinWest Australia,therecanbe,ofnecessity, butlittleforustowrite.Butasthat littlemaybesummedupinthehopeful word,"progress,"weareunwillingto foregothegratificationofrecordingit.

The"StaroftheSea"branchestablishedinFremantle,andthepioneerof thesocietyiuWesternAustraliaexhibits everyelement,inpointofnumbersand finances,ofenduranceandofsuccess. Pope,whichtheItalianrevolutionists haveassailed,alsobeginstocallforth expressionsofrevivingsympathyfrom thepublicjournalsmostconspicuous heretoforefortheiradherencetothe innovationsoftherevolutionists.Thus, theNaziane,aradicaljournalof Florence,alludingtothenewPope, saysofhimthathebynomeansregardsthetemporalpowerasatanend, butthatonthecontraryPopeLeothe Thirteenthisfullypersuaded"thatthe Churchiscalledupontofightforits rtghts,andthatitcanandmustconquer-"thelachinasitschiamataa lottare,ithepossaedebbavincsre." Thus,itappearsthatthemodernrevolutionistswhohaveattackedthe temporalpowerofthePopesandthe divinerightofKing's,arelikelytofind themselvesfacetofacewithagreat reactionarymovementultimatelyto sweepthembeforeit,andrestorethose principlestotheirpristineinfluence.

LOSSOFTHE'JAMESSERVICE.'

AMONGthetracesoftheirvisitleftus bythelategales,thesaddest,asitisthe mostirreparable,isthatwitnessedinthe remnantsofthebulloftheJames Serviceastheylieatthesouthendofthe Murrayreef,fullmanyafathombeneath thesurfaceofthesea,andinthewreckageoftheill-fatedbarque,strewnupon thesandybeachofSafetyBayand Mandurab.Thedisasterscausedby thestormhavebeenneitherfewnor inconsiderable.Thefounderingofthe LadyElizabeth,withthelossofcargo, thewreckoftheDiana,and thestrandingoftheStarQueen, ary,andofsomanysmaller craft,havebeeneventsentailingtoo heavyalossuponthepartiesinterested, andfollowingeachotherintooquick successiontobeeasilyforgotten.But forthehourtheyareoverlooked-lost sightofinthedarknessoftheshadow castbytheterribledisasterofwhich wewrite. Thereisnownolivingsoulwhocan tellusthehistoryofthemishap.Those whowereitswitnesses,andwereactors inthescene,haveperishedwiththe ship.Wecannotthereforepresumeto writeforourownsatisfactionorthe informationofourreadersacertain narrativeofthedeplorableevent.But sincetheoc-:urrencethetelegraphhas beenbusy,andthevariouswreckage givenupbythewaveshasbeencarefullygatheredandexamined,andthe conditionofthevesselwhenfirstobservedhasbeennoted,andfromthe itemsofinformationthusacquireditis possibletoformaconception,insome pointscertain,inothersplausible,and iuallconsistent,ofthetruenatureof theevent.

Inthisfrightfulpredicamenttheunfortunatebarquefoundherselfonthe nightofMonday,22ndulto.The passengers,oratleastsomeamongst them,apparentlyunconsciousofdanger, wereretiredtorest.Thevesseldriven bythefullfuryofthestormnearedthe fatalreef.Theendcame.Inthedarknessofthenight,amidtherushofthe storm,wherethefierceseaofbreakers marksthesiteofthestrifeofrockand wave,far,faroutfromthefriendly land,theJamesServicestruck,filled wentdown.Insuchaseaasmusthave beenthenon,andinsuchaspot,no boatwouldbemanageableandnoeffort couldbemade,offeringthefaintest chanceofsuccess,ofsavinglife.The ill-fatedpassengersandcrewmusthave sharedatoncethedoomoftheirill-fated barque.Withitsplanksforacoffin, anditssailstheirshroud,theywent downwithittothesamesepulchre,the depthsofthecold,dark,stormysea.

Theperilsoftheoceanareproverbial. Windsandwavesaretreacherous,and fatalaliketocraftandcrew.Those whogotoseainships,andventure theirgoodsthereonmustanticipatedisaster.Yettheevileversurpriseswhen itcomes.Customneverreconcilesus totheblow.Leastofalldoesitdoso whenhumanlifeisforfeited.Forthe statelyshipsthatarelost,industrious handsmaybuildupstatelierstill. Costlymerchandizemaybereplacedby merchandizeyetmorecostly.Forlife alone,oncesacrificed,thereisnorepair. Wehopeindeedthatourwrecksmay beinthefuturefewandfarbetween. Clause10enacts,"wheneverbythe specialActitisprovidedthattherailwayshallboconstructedaccordingtoa maporplanandbookofreferencea copyofsuchmaporplanandbookof referencecertifiedascorrectunderthe handoftheDirectorshallbedepositedat theofficeoftheDirectorinPerth,andat theofficeoftherespectiveResidentor PoliceMagistrates(otherthanthe PoliceMagistrateofPerth)throughany partofwhosedistrictitmaybeproposedtoconstructsuchrailway:and incaseanymaterialdeviationfromthe saidlineindicatedinsuchmaporplan shallatanytimeafterwardsbedetermineduponbytheDirector,heshall forthwithmarkthesameonsuchmap orplan.Suchmaporplanandbook ofreferenceshallatalltimes inspectionbyanyowneroflandinthe triot."

Itis"aBillintituledAnActto authorisetheconstructionofaRailway fromFremantletoGuildford."The Billconsistsofapreambleandtwo clausesonly.Theyareasfollows:-

"Whereasitisexpedienttoauthorisethe "constructionandmaintenanceofaRailway "fromFremantletoGuildfordbeitenacted "byHisExcellencytheGovernorofWestern "AustraliaanditsDependencies,byandwith "theadviceoftheLegislativeCouncil "thereof,asfollows "1.-ThisactmaybecitedastheEastern RailwayAct1878."

ThisistheBill.TheSchedule appendedtotheBillneithergivesthe landspassedoverortherouteofthe line.Thefollowingistheentireinformationafforded.

"StartingfromapointoppositetheNorth JettyatFremantleinalinewithCliffStreet thelinerunsNorthEasterlyfor67chains, thenbyacurveof20chainsradiusis broughtontoatimberbridge,consistingof four50feet,andfourteen30feet,openings. Aseriesofangularbearings(too absurdforquotation)representthe courseofthelinefromFremantleto Perth.TheroutethroughPerth, althoughitshouldbewell-definedis notovenlaiddown-ThesescantparticularsaloneareVtir.;.60,1

TheJamesServicehadclearedout fromCalcuttaandwasonherwayto Melbournewithamiscellaneouscargo. Besidescargo,shehadonhoardseveral passengers-themembersofatheatrical troupe-whowiththecaptainandcaptain'swife,officersandcrewcouldnot havenumberedlessthantwenty-five persons.Fromtheentriesinajournalfoundamongthedebris,andkept byaladypassenger,itisascertained thatthevoyagewasanunfortunateone fromthebeginning.Ofwhatever charactertheearliermishapswere,they werebutsmallomenofthatterrible misfortuneinwhichtheyweretoculminate.Thefirstgalewhichblewhere forafortnightalmostwithoutinterruptionmusthavemadeitselffeltoveran extensivearea,andtherecanbeabut littleimprobabilityintakingitfor grantedthevesselexperiencedthefury ofthewindsandiusupposingitsustainedinjuriesrequiringspeedyrepair. Thesiteoftheshipwreckisfaroutof theordinarycourseofavesselmaking thevoyageinwhichshewasengaged, andthisisafactwhichitwouldbe difficulttoexplainsaveonsomehypothesissuchasthis.

Itwastheintentionofthecaptain, wepresume,toseekshelteriuFremantleharbor.Butwhetherthereor elsewheredirected,hisaimwasdestined tobeunsuccessful.Theship'scourse wasfinishedinasensehedidnotanticipate,andinmakingfortheshore,his barquewasonlyhurryingtoherdoom.It maybethattheimpossibilityoftaking

ANActsecondinimportancetonone thathavebeenbroughtbeforethe LegislativeCounci.duringthepast sessionhasjustbecomelaw,insofar thatithasreceivedthesanctionofthe Legislature,andtheassentofHisExcellencytheGovernorwhetheritwill obtaintheImperialsanctionismatterof fairquestionprobablyifpublicattentionisdrawntoitsclauses,andtheir bearingonpublicandprivateinterests awholesomeoppositiontothenature andspiritofthebillmaybeengendered, sufficienttoinducetheExecutive,should theGovernmentbememorialisedonthe subject,togosofaratleastasto promisethatnextsessionanamended billshallbelaidbeforeCouncil.

TheBillinquestionisentitled"An Acttoconsolidate,andamenddivers Actsnowinforcerelatingtothesurvey constructionandmaiutainanceofRailways."Butwhere,whetherinWestern Australia,allovertheworld,orinthe moonthetitletotheActdoesnotsetforth.ThisActisnotoneofthoseof whichHisExcellencytheGovernorin openingCouncilonthe29thofMay, spokeasfollows:(videclause23 Governorsspeech)."Afteracareful considerationofourrequirementsit hasbeendecidedtosubmitforyour considerationbillsfordealingwith"andthenfollowsalistoftenbills,and aproposaltointroducemeasuresto amendthelawrelatingtorealproperty. ThisgeneralRailwayActisnothoweverinthecategoryofthosewhich havereceived"acarefulconsideration ofourrequirements"butatthevery fag-endofthesessionwasintroduced, andsohurriedlypassedthatsomeitemsof itsprovisoesarepositivelyunprinted blanks(videclauses9and30.)

ThisActwhichistoberegardedas thegeneralActforthefuturerailway systemofthecolony,supersedesand

Tothisclausewearecompelledto rsiseprotest.Itisatvariancealike withtheletterandspiritoftheImperial andotherColonialActsrelatingtorailwayconstruction.Intheothercolonies itisincumbentupon,notoptionalwith thoGoveramentbeforeplacingaRailwayBillbeforetheLegislaturesfor sanctiontohaveproperplans,sections, andbooksofrefesencepreparedanddistributedforpublicuseinprescribed places,andforcopiesofsuchplans, sections,booksofreferenceandother memorandatobelaidbytheGovernmentbeforetherespectiveLegislatures, andtheActauthorisingtheconstruction oftheproposedlineofrailwaymustbe baseduponsuchplansandsections,or suckmodificationsofsameasmaybe determined!bytheLegislaturesbefore theGovernorcangivetheVice-Regal assenttothemeasure.Hereitwould seemnothingofthesortneedbedone butthattheGovernmentmayintroduce abillfortheconstructionofarailway withoutsomuchashavingasurvey madeoftheline,andthatonlywhen thetactispassedneedanysurveybe made.Suchinfactisthereadingand andbearingofthe10thclauseofthis GeneralActagainstwhichweraiseour protestasmischeviousandunjustA protestwhichwetrustwillbeechoed andreeeclivedbythepressandthe publicthroughoutthecolony.Weare wellawarethatrailwaysarethegreat necessityofthecountry,butitdoesnot thereforefollowthattheyaretobe carriedanywhereoreverywherebyan irresponsibleDirectorwithoutappeal bypartiesinterested,orwhoselandsare tobeseveredortaken,especiallywhen possiblyitcouldbeshownthatbya deviationofrouteeconomicalconstruction,orotheradvantagescouldbe secured.Astheactnowstandsthere isnorightofappealbyanyperson, Municipality,orcorporationeitherto theLegislatureortheGovernment. ButanActto.makearailwaycanbe obtained,thesurveysmadeafterwards, andinthematterofconstructionthe DIreotorisbyclause11allowedone milefordeviations,oneachsideofthe laid-downlineofroute.

ChineseandCooliesmaybeverydesirablein certainsettlements,butitisunjustandimpoliticaswell,tointroducethemintoany Britishcolonywhereout-of-doorlaborcan bedonebyEuropeans.Suchisthepeculiar conditionofthiscolony.Allout-of-door labor,canbedonebyEuropeans,andwhen thecolonyisinapositiontoresumeimmigration,andthereisreallyademandfor labor,therearethousandsofstalwartEnglish, Irish,andScotch-menandwomen,willingtocomeandsettleamongstus. Whenwefinditimpossibletoinduceour countrymentoemigrate,then,andonlythen, weareofopinion,isitthedutyofthe Governmenttolookelsewheretosupplythe laborin/rket.Thereareafewsquatters,who thinkinfinitelymoreabouttheincreaseof "stock"thantheydoabouttheincreaseof population,andtothese,afewmiserable CooliesatstarvationwagetoEuropeans, would,nodoubt,beacceptable.Asiaticshave failedeverywhereas"colonists,"andwearo certainlypleasedtofind,thatpopularopinion isstronglyaversetoaChineseorCoolie

THEFAMINEINCHINA.-Thedreadful faminewhichhascontinuedsolonginChina, andwhichhascausedthedeathofsomany thousandChinese,hasatlastexcitedthesympathyandassistanceofalmosteveryEuropean country,andrecently,provisionsandmoney hiive.beenforwardedtothefamished districts,withpraiseworthyalarcity,and consequently,muchmiseryanddistresshas beenrelieved.Writingofthefamine,the "SpecialHighCommissionerforFamine Relief,"reports,that,"Historycontainsno recordofsoterribleastateofthings,"and nowthatdistressisnotquitesorife,the friendsofChina,areofferingtheEmperor adviceofallsorts,topreventareacurrence ofsuchaterriblecalamity.Publicworks, intheshapeofrailways,roadmaking,canal constructionandrepairs,aresuggested,and lastandnottheleastbestremedy-Emigra41011.ThoughChinahasapopulationof some426,000,000,yetitistho steadyemigration otheand annuallYs.orftetfois.Intheviewofthis tEleatenedexodus,theAmericanCongress hasadoptedaResolution,requiringa revisionofthetreatywhichallows unrestrictedChineseImmigration,and Queenslandweknow,isdoingitsbestto renderaresidenceinthatcountryintolerable totheChinese.CaliforniaandQueensland havehadenoughoftheChinese.Inboth countriesthattheyhaveshewntheyhaveno intentionofoecomingcolonists,andwere theyeventosettledown,wouldeverremain analienelementintheland.However, therecanbenodoubt,thatthequestionof ChineseEmigration,will,erelongbecomea veryseriousonewithbothAmericanand AustralianStatesmen.

THEUNIONBANK.-Sincetheadventof e. thisestablishment,therehasbeenmost unusualactivityamongtheDirectorsofour otherBanks.Theresultofcompetitionhas fortunatelyoeenmostbeneficialtothe mercantileaswelltothegeneralpublic,and moderateinterestandreduceddiscountsare nowtheorderoftheday.Anotherbranch oftheUnionisabouttobeopenedin ChampionBay.

RECENTAPPOINTMENT.-Theappointment ofMr.Howard,asSuperintendentofthe Police,fortheSouthernDistrict,hasbeen veryseverelycommenteduponbythePress. Thereisageneralopinion,thattheappointmentwasmostunfairtoofficersoftheforce, whosedahliaofpromotionshouldnothave beenover-looked.Amongmanymembers ofthePoliceforce,whoaremuchmore competenttodischargethedutiesofPolice Superintendent,thanMr.Howard,can possiblybe,maybementioned,Messrs.Roe, FIESSE,KELLY,WISBBY,andFURLONG.All thesearealloldandwelltrainedofficers,and topassthemoverinfavorofMr.Howard, atyroinPolicematters,iscertainlytreating themwithgrossinjustice.

HARBORWORKS.-SiTJohnCOODE'Splans forHarborWorksforFremantlearenot,it wouldseem,consideredwithinthemeansof thecolonytoundertakeatthepresenttime, andconsequently,thequestionofHarbor Works,maybeconsideredasshelved.That somethingmustbedonetoimproveour Harbor,hasbeenmademanifestthis winter.Vesselswhichhavearrivedfrom EnglandandhavenowbeenintheHarbor fornearly,orquitetwomonths,havenotyet beendischargedTherecanbenoquestion thatrailwayswillnecessitateHarborimprovements,andifthecolonyonlyhad ResponsibleGovernment,nodoubtRailway constructionandHarborWorkswouldbe carriedonsimultatneously.

THELOANBILL.-SomeofOUTcontemporariesareinclinedtotheopinion,that thesanctionoftheLoanBillfor£200,000, bytheRightHon.theSecretaryofState,is morethandoubtful,consequentuponthe schemeofraising£50,000forroadmaking havingbeenincludedinthesameBillfor theamountalreadysanctionedbytheHome Governmenttobeborrowedforrailway purposes.Consideringhowcarefulthe SecretaryofStateis,inmoneymatters,it willnotbesurprising,thattherewouldafter allbesome"hitch"intheLoanBill,and thusmuchannoyanceanddelayincurred. ThattheSecretaryofStatewilleversanctiontheraisingof£50,000forroadmaking, therearefewsanguineenoughtoimagine. Theconditionsonwhichaloanforroad makingwouldmeetwiththeapprovalofthe SecretaryofState,viz.,theimposingof tolls,havingbeentotallyignoredbythe LegislativeCouncil,therecanbeverylittle doubt,theirrequestfor£50,000forroad making,anywhereandeverywhere,willmeet withlittleconsiderationfromtheheadof theColonialOffice.Inthisparticular instance,theinterventionofDowning Street,willreallyproveaColonialadvantage, andbeasortofset-offtoourlonglistof complaintsagainsttheinterminableredtapeimuofthatwellabusedpublicdepartment.

CHINESEANDCOOLIEIMMIGRATION.-The questionofChineseandCoolieimmigration, continuestooccupyaconsiderableshareof publicattention,buttherecanbenodoubt, popularfeelingistotallyagainsttheintroductionofeitherChineseorCoolies.The questionunderdiscussionisinrealityavery importantone,antiinouropinion,andthemore itisventilated,themoreevidentitwill

RESPONSIBLEGOTERNMENT.-TheadvocatesofConstitutionalReform,are,wearo gladtostate,dailygainingstrength.Persons whowereheretoforeonlyremarkablefor theirlargestakeinthecolony,andwhotook littleornointerestinpoliticalmatters,are nowjoiningtheranksofthosewhoareforemostintheirdemandsforagovernmentof MinisterialResponsibility.Whenmenof capitalandsubstance,joininthecryof "Reform,"theresultcannotbeanylonger doubtful,anddespitetheveryweakoppositionofthepresentLegislativeCouncil,toa change,intheformofgovernment,itisbecomingmoreevidentthattheGovernmentwill becompelled,bytheforceofcircumstances, andindeferencetothepopularwill,toconcedewhatiswantedbycolonistsatlarge, andthatis,therightofself-government. Thecrythatthetimehasnotarrivedfor thecolonytoassumeagovernmentofministerialresponsibilityistooirnsy,todeceive anyone.Howarewetojudgewhenthe timehasreallyarrived,ifwearenottodefer totheexpressionofpopularopinion?The colonistsofallclassesarenearlyunanimous intheirdemandforResponsibleGovernment, andsuchbeingthecase,isitnotfollyto continuethefretfulcryofinexpediency? Thetimehasnotarrived,saythefew opponentsofanychange.Butwhosaysso butafewcroakers?Notthemajorityof thepeople-thetraders,thefarmers,andthe workingclasses,declarethetimehasarrived, andareallconvincedthelongeraConstitutionalchangeisdeferred,bysomuchthe longeristheonwardprogressofthecolony retarded.Butgranting,assomearedisposed todo,thatpopularopinionisreallyinfavor ofachange,whereareourmentocarryon publicbusiness?Certainly,iftheadvocates ofachangeofgovernmentcouldnotfind men,thecrywouldbemostdecidedly, premature.Batweassert,withoutfearof contradiction,thatmancanbefound.Aswe areallaware,opportrulitymakesmen. OnlyhaveMinisterialResponsibility,and manymen,nowunknowntofame,wouldsoon appearinthepoliticalarena.But,topass fromtheunknowntotheknows.Whofor instance,wouldorcouldmakeabetter Premier,thanHocking,Finer,orBurt amongthepresentGovernmentparty,or Parker,Brown,Leaks,Carey,orCrowther amongtheindependentmembers?Tofill theotherandminoroffices,menarein abundance.ResponsibleGovernmentdoes notmeanRevolution,inabadsense.It meansonlyrevolutiononasmallwale,and withafewoffice-holdersResponsibleGovernmentdoesnotmean,theoustingofall

OurfriendsintheEastappear.tobelosing thatenergeticspiritwhichhashithertobeen amarkedcharacteristicoftheir's,andwhich theyhaveuptothepresent,neverfailedto show,whenanymeasurewastobeadopted affectingevenremotelytheinterestsofthe Catholicbody.Heretofore,whateverthey tookinhands,theytookupwithsuchdeterminationthat,forthem,buttobegin,wasto attainatoncethesummitofsuccess. Witnessforexample,theprogressoftheir YoungMen'sSociety.Laterinitsestablishmentthanthekindredsocitiesof.Perthand Fremantle,itspeedlysurpassedboth,inthe membersonitsbooks,thecrowdedattendancesatmeetingsandthewidespread interestmanifestedinallitsproceedings. Rumourhasit,thatmattersdonotfareso wellwiththeYorkC.Y.M.Societynow,but wedonottakemuchheedofthis,noraswe think,evenifrumourspeakscorrectly,that anyseriousinjurythreatenstheassociation. Theeventoftheday,regardedasastandpointofthefuture,showednothingbutwhat washopeful.Itgavegroundforhopethat thegoodworkcommencedthatdaywould liveandthrivewhenmanydaysandyears Ladgoneby.Itwashopedthattheblessing giveninthebeginningbytheCreatortoHie creatures,whenHebadethemtoincrease andmultiply,wouldbebestoweduponthe workwhichwascompletedthatday,and thatauincreasewouldtakeplaceinthe numberofthestudentstobetrainedwithin thewallsofthatcollege;alsothatthose studentswouldincreaseinvirtueatidallthat isgood.

Inthenextplace,theymightconsider thiseventasaportionofthegreat,warfare nowgoingonbetweenthesystem'ofcombinedreligiousandseculareducationand thatofpurelysecularinstruction.Ifthey consideredforamomenttheywouldseethat theCatholicdenominationwastheonlyone thatcould,withoutgrossandabsoluteinconsistency,commenceacollegedestinedforthe educationofthechildrenofthewealthier classesoftheirownChurchandbelief.If membersoftheChurchofEngland,the Presbyteriandenomination,orthefollowers ofJohnWesley,wereaskedcouldthey completeacollegefortheexclusiveuseof membersoftheirowndenomination,they wouldanswertheycouldnot;andthey wouldsayitwasnotnecessarythatany particularformofChristianityshouldbe taughtinapublicschool.Nevertheless, theywouldnotexcludefromthecolleges erectedundertheauspicesoftheirrespective denominationstheteachingofChristian religion.Butwhentheeducationofthe childrenofthepooristobeconsidered,

everythingischanged.Letuscomparethe conductofthesepersonswiththatofthe CatholicChurch,whichsaysthatallkindsof education,whetherforthechildrenofthe richorthechildrenofthepoor,andeverythingwedo,mustbeundertakeninthename ofChrist,andunderthesanctionofthe Church.TheCatholicChurchdesiredno lessearnestlythereligiousandmoral trainingofthechildoftherichmanasthat ofthechildofthelaborerandmechanic. TheChurchhadbutonestandard.Sitedid notteachthatreligionwasaluxuryforthe rich,butthatitwasanecessityforboththe richandthepoor.Itwasurgedthatifthe childrenofthepoorerclasseswerebrought upindenominational'schools,theywere disposedtohateeachotherbutifthatwere so,whyshouldnotthesonsofbarristers, judges,anddoctors,whowereeducatedat differenteducationalestablishments,existing undertheauspicesofdifferehtreligious denominations, hate one another also?

Suchinconsistencymuststampitselfon thesystemofeducationexistingintheState schoolsofthiscolony,andtowhichthe CatholicsofVictoriaweresadlyandunwillinglydriventooppositioninselfdefence.

Theh)useinwhichtheywerethenassembled wasaprotestagainstthatsystemofpopular educationwhichwitsnowsoextendedinthe colony.Itmightbesaidthatthe4nority oughttoyieldandthrowintheirlotiliththe majority-giveupastrugglewhichwas unreasonableandhopeless.Butitwasnot becausetheminoritywereweakorscantyin numbersthattheyshouldbeinsultedand oppressed.Itwastheespecialcharacteristic ofthesonsofEnglandtolovefairplayand hatethedown-treadingoftheweakand feeble.Ourfeeblenessoughttobeourprotectionandpalladium.Itmightbethat thosewhoatpresentwerestrongwould becomeweakandfeebleintheirturn,andbe forcedtoaskthatprotectionwhichthey themselves,inthemomentoftransient triumph,deniedtoothers.Butwewerenot withouthope,andweoughtnottocastdown ourarmsindespair.TheblessingofGod wouldbeuponourstruggles,andtheissue wouldrestwithHim.Again,itshouldbe borneinmindthatCatholics,inamatterof thiskind,couldnotbeconsideredasinsulatedfromtherestoftheworld.Wearea partofthegreatestbodyofChristiansupon earth,andinthiscountryrepresentthegreat Catholiccorporation,towhoselawsand constitutionweareboundsothatthe presentsystemofStateeducationmight helookeduponasanoutrageupontheentire fabricoftheholyCatholicChurch.Some considerationoughttobeallotedtothe ChurchofBossuetandFeneinesr--atoot juoshnandColumbus, InAlLorurado'Troun Sobieski,and otherimmortalnames,representinsi.the intellectwad wilt, presentsystemofStateeducationthe Catholicsofthecolonywereresistingan attempttooverthrowthelawsofthe UniversalChurch.Itwasalwaysthedesire ofgreatnationsthattheirlawsshouldnot belightlychangedandtherewerenotscantingeveninEnglandinstancesofmonarchs beingdrivenintoexile,orledtothescaffold. forhavingattemptedtosubvertthelawsof thecountryoverwhichtheywereplacedto rule.Ifattemptstoalterthelawsoftemporal kingdomswereviewedwithhorrorand indignation,howmuchmoreweretobe condemnedanyattemptsmadetosubvert thelawsofthatChurchwhichwasfounded ontherockofPeter,andwasnottobeoverthrownbythepowersofhell.TheState systemofeducationwassometimesspoken ofasapagansystem;butthisdidagross wrongtothepagansofancienttimes.Julius CaesartoldusthattheancientDruids(who weregiventoasystemofgrossidolatry) instructedtheyouthwhocametotheir schoolsnotonlyintheknowledgeofhuman things,butinthenatureofthe"immortal gods'andintheimmortalityofthesoul, becausetheyknewthatwhenmenweretold oftheimmortalityofthesoultheybecame intrepidandpatrioticwhenthetimeof dangercame.

TheChurchwasthegreatmainstayofall civilisation.WhentheRomanEmpirefell, inthewreckthatensued,andwhenthe barbarousnationsoftheNorthcrossedover theprovincesofEurope,andcivilisation disappeared,therewasonelandwhereit foetidshelter-onelandthatCesarhadnot broughtunderthedominionofRome-the IslandofSt.Patrick.Banishedfromthe restofEurope,civilisation,learning,and religionraisedtheirbeadsinthisremote corneroftheearth,andtoitmultitudes hurriedfromthedesolationofotherlands Theseedoflearning,whichonthecontinent ofEuropeseemedtrampledintotheearth, waswaftedbythebreezeofGod'sprovidence totheIrishsoil.Asair,collectedandconfinedinasmallspace,whenagainsetfree, burstsforthwithunfetteredvigour'so,after havingbeenconfinedtothat,smellwestern island,whenlearningandcivsationwere oncemoresetatliberty,theyburstforth uponcontinentalEuropefromtheIslandof Saints,whichhadsolongbeentheirnursery andasylum.Inthemonastic'schoolsthe lightofsciencewaspreserved.Therethe monkstanghtrhetoric,logic,grammar (whichcomprisedliteratureinallits branches)music,arithmetic,geometry,and astronomy.Bythemonksweretheancient sciencespreservedandwascivilisationreconstructed.Bythelaborsofthosemenwere theGreekandRomanauthorspreservedDemosthenes,Livy,andHomer,whoseimmortalproductionshadoflateengagedthe thoughtsandlaboursofEngland'sPrime Ministers,oneafteranother. Howmanyofthetranscriptions,accomplishedlaboriouslybythemonksintheirsilent conventcells,wereworthtosucceeding

Inconclusion,thepreachersaidtnatthe FathersoftheSocietylookedupon thepresenceofthoseassembledasan auguryofthesuccessofthecollege. TheRev.LAVENDERKIDDS,(who seemedmuchexcited,androseamidst criesof"Order,order,"andconsiderable laughter),observedthathenowassisted forthefirsttimeattheAssemblyof Convocation,andhadbeendeeply shockedbytheunscripturaltoneofthe discussion.(Suppressedmerriment.)

Forhispart,hegloriedintheThirtyNineArticlesoftheirpureandreformed Church,andespeciallyintheirnoble testimonytothegrandtruththatthe religionofProtestantswas"theBible, thewholeBible,andnothingbutthe Bible."Thiswasthetrue"Authority"ofvitalChristians,andhecared fornoother.Thiswasthesimpleand grandlessonofthosevenerableformularieswhichhadbeenthatdayso grievouslyundervaluedandcalumniated. Really,itseemedtohimtobepreposterousinanyProtestantassemblyto talksomuchof"Church-authority." Authority,indeed! Whowantedit? Andiftheyhadit,whowouldobeyit? CertainlynomemberofthatHouse withwhomhehadthehappinessof beingacquainted,-(laughterandironicalcheers),-leastofalltheHighChurchpe-..ty,whohadrecentlybeen formingasocietytoprotectthemselves againsttheirbishops.(Reneweddisapprobation.)Hecontendedthattheir forefathersbaddonewithoutauthority, andhadwiselyregardeditasamarkof theBeast.HewasfortheBibleand theBibleonly.PerishtheArticles, andtheChurchitself-no,hiszealwas perhapscarryinghimtoofar.What hemeanttosaywas-infact,hewished toobserve-aslongastheyhadthe Wordtheywantednothingelse.He knew,indeed,thatDeanPrimitiveand Archdeacon Chasuble preferred AuthoritytoScripture-aslong,that was,astheycouldkeeptheformer entirelyintheirownhands;buthe hadinvariablyremarkedthattheyrefusedtotheirbishopsandsuperiors theobediencetheyrequiredfrom

ItwascuriousthatMr.Kiddsdid notperceivethateverybodyhadthe Bibleaswellashimself,butthat everybodydrewadifferentChristianity outofit.FromtheSocinian,who deniesthedivinityoftheLordwho boughthim,uptothePuseyite,who believesineverythingCatholicexcept intheCatholicChurch-allwereBible Christians.Butthiswasonlyanother wayofsayingthatBibleChristianity is,ofallfallacies,themosttransparent; thefallacyconsistinginthis,thatno professedlyBibleChristianeverreally takestheBibleforhisauthoritywhat healwaystakesishisowninterpretationoftheBible,thatis,himself.So that,"theBible,andtheBibleonly," meantreally"myinterpretationofthe Bible,andnotyours."Hence,the Bibleandselfweresynonymousterms inthemouthoftheBibleChristian. Forexample(continuedDeanBlunt, ssytaitiltietti:±f:,7hirit.alpipideadrsedtaktoe atextoftheBibleasmeat..., Ate--ere]T4..1,+thesametextas meaningexactlythecontrary,itis obviousthatneitherMr.Kiddsnor myselftaketheBibleforourauthority whatwetakeisourselvesbutas nobodyhassufficientsinceritytosay openly,"myonlyauthorityismyself," therefore,MrKiddscallshisopinions "theBible,"andIcallMr.Kidds' opinions"unscriptural." lie(DeanBlunt)wouldonlydetain theHousetosuggesttoMr.Kiddsthe answerhemustgivetothequestion proposedbyDr.Easy,AssumingMr. Kidd'stheory-thataman'sconviction ofthetruthisthesamewithtruth itself;inotherwords,thatheresy becomesthetruthtoeveryonewho thinkshefindsitintheBible-thereal solutionofDr.Easy'squestionwasas follows;"Letamanbesurethatthe BibleteachesthatthereisaGod,and thenheisahereticifhedenyit;but lethimhavethesmallestdoubtupon thepoint,andthenheisahereticifhe assertit."

WhenHomadethewonderfulstatement:"Thegatesofhellshallnever prevailagainsttheChurch;"even childrencanseethatHemeant"Hell shalltriumphovertheChurch foreighthundredyearsand more."

Finally,whenHeexclaimed"Ho thatwillnotheartheChurch,lethim betotheeastheheathenandthe publican;"howobvioustheinterpretation "Hethatwillnothearthe Church,lethimbetotheeasa brother;providedonlyhereadthe Bible,andcallhimselfanEvangelical."

AstheEvangelicalsdealtinthis mannerwiththewordsoftheMaster,it wasnotsurprisingthattheyshould treatHisapostleswiththesame derision.Afewexampleswould suffice:-

IfSt.Paulsaid"Amanthatis ahereticreject;"everybodyperceives thathemeant: "Particularlycourt thecompanyofheretics,andgladlyjoin inprayerwiththem."

Ifheexhorted"Lettherebeno divisions,"whatismoreevidentthan "" -L "Withoutdivisionsthe humanmindwillbeenslavedbyinlestcraft?"

Ifhetaughtthatthereshouldbe"no schismsinthebody,"surelyitwas equivalenttosaying: "Letthebody bemadeupofschisms."

"Ifheaffirmed"Theworksofthe flesharemanifest,whicharesects,"it waspreciselyasifhehadsaid"Now, sectsarethefirst-fruitsoftheSpirit."

If,alludingtoholymarriage,he observed:"Itisgoodforamannotto touchawoman,"howmanifestthe meaning:"Everybodyshouldmarry, andparticularlypriests."

If,again,hesaid:"Hethatis divided,"howtransparentthescriptural lesson"Allmenoughttomarry,in orderthattheymaybedivided."

If,oncemore,headmonishedChristians:"Hethatisnotmarriedcareth fortheLord,"howpatenttheApostolic counsel "Makehastetomarry, especiallythebishopsandclergy, thatyoumayceasetocareforthe Lord."

DEANPRIMITIVEwasunwillingthat theobservationsofMr.Kiddsshould passwithoutanyotherreplythanDean Blunthadthoughtfittogivethem. Hehadspentthirty'yearsofhislifein combatingtheerrorsofthatpart/in theChurchtowhichMr.Kiddsbelonged,andhehopedtocontinuethe sameholywelfaretotheend.Hewas awarethattheso-calledEvangelicals insistedupontheplainnessofScripture, andwereaccustomedtoassume,with strangedisregardofnotoriousfacts,that nobodyneedfindanydifficultyindeciding thetruemeaningofanytextwhatever. Withthepermission:oftheHouse,he wouldgiveafewillustrationsofthe Evangelicalmethodofdealingwiththe inspiredbookfromwhichitwould veryclearlyappear,thatwhenthey boastedofappealingtotheBible,they onlyappealedtotheirownversionofit, thatis,tothemselves;andthattheir favouriteshibboleth,"theBible,and theBibleonly,"meantsimply,asDean Blunthadwellobserved,"myinterpretationoftheBible,andnotyours."

Thus,whenourLordsaidtoHis priests:"Igivetoyethekeysof thekingdomofheaven,"itisplain, accordingtothetrangelicals,thatHe

Hewouldnowproceedtogiveillustrationsofadifferentkind,andfroma differentsource.Hewasanxiousto show,&Eamerematteroffairnessto Mr.Kidds,thathismethodandthatof hispartyintheChurchwaspotinconsistentwiththelanguageoftheArticles, whichwouldsupplyremarkablespecimensofthesamekind.Forthisreason hefeltatlibertytoremainincommun.. ionwithmenwhose,viewsofChristianitywerediametricallyopposedtohis own.Bothcouldpleadtheapproval, silentorspoken,oftheircommon mother,Themaxim,"Quietanon movers"-whichintheircommunion mightbeinterpreted,"Peaceatany price"-wasnottobelightly esteemed;and,perhaps,intheeventof anyfurtherrevisionoftheThirtkNine Articles,thesenseofthatsalutary maximmightbeembodiedintheological terms,soastoconstitutethefortiethof theirnumber.
