CYPRUSANDITALY.

TheItalianjournalsaregiventheir seriousattentionanddevotedlong articlestothecessionofCyprusto England.Theactislookeduponwith muchdisfavour.TheKingsofSardinia haveforalongtimeenjoyedthetitleof KingsofCyprusandJerusalem,andin thelonglistoftitlesthatheraldsbestowuponKingHumbertthishasno meaning.Thehistoryoftheislandis givenatlength,andtheruleofItaly overitisinsistedupon.TheCongress whichhasjestconcludeditslabours hasnotpleasedthemorefervent Italians.Ithasbestowednointerest uponthem.Henceameetingistobe heldsooninRomewiththeobjectof censuringitsacts,andatthesametime ofexpressingthepopular,orrather radicalfeelingfortheprovincesunder theswayofAustria.

THEREUNIONOFCHRISTENDOM.

Ameetingofthoseinterestedinthe reunionofChristendomwastobeheldat theWestministerPalaceHotelyesterday(Friday)eveningwiththeBishop ofFrederictoninthechair.Thefollowingresolutionsweretobeproposed -Resolution1."Thattheadvancesof theinfidelmovementthroughout Europe,andtheactualorthreatened dissolutionoftherelationsofChurch andState,constituteafreshcallonall sincerebelieverstoprayandlabour earnestlyforthereunionofChristendom inonefaithandonefold."Resolution

2."ThattheaccessionofPopeLeo XIII.andthereawakeninglifeof EasternChristianityaffordatthepresentmomentspecialgroundsforrenewedenergyandhope."Resolution

3."Thattheseriousobstaclesto missionworkathomeandabroadcaused bythediviSionofChristiansrenderit incumbentonallpersonstolabouras wellasprayfortherestorationof visibleunity."

THEORANGEEXCITEMENTINCANADA.

TheMayor'sactionfortunately succeededinavertingacollisononthe 12thJuly,betweentheOrangemen andtheCatholics,andquietwasrestoredinthetownbeforemidnight. WhentheOrangemencameoutofthe hallinthemorning,intendingtoparade thetown,theconstablesenrolledbythe Alayorarrestedseveralofthemand preventedalinebeingformed.The policeweresupportedbythemilitary, who,withfixedbayonets,formed acrossthestreetanddividedthecrowd, thusfrustratingitseffortstoattackthe Orangemen.Thelatterfinallyabandonedtheirendeavourstogetintolit andreturnedtotheOrangeHall.The Mayorsubsequentlydirectedthearrest ofMr.Grant,theOrangeCounty GrandMaster,andofseveralother leadingOrangemen.Atsunsetthe crowdsdispersed,andtheOrangemen hadallleftthehallincabsunderan escortof_police.'TheMayorhasdeclaredthatthearrestsaremerelyformal, andmadesolelytotestthelegalityof theOrangeorganisationandprocession. GeneralSmythhasorderedthetroops backtotheirquarters,andthespecial constableshavebeendischarged.Only onemanwaswoundedduringtheday, andthiscasewasduetoanaccident.

QUEENMERCEDES.

TheSolemnObsequiesofQueen Mercedeswerecelebratedatnineo'clock

onWednesdaymorning,atMadrid,in theChurchofSanFrancisco.The sacrededificewasentirelydrapedin blackvelvet,fringedwithgoldlaceand ornamentedwiththearmsoftheHouses ofBourbonandOrleans.Thenave, whichwasoccupiedby4,000persons, waslightedby400lustresand1,000 candles.Inthecentreofthenavea catafalquewiththreesupports,surmountedbyheraldricstatutes,with armsoftheMiddleAges.Theurn wasdrapedwiththeQueen'smantle, uponwhichwasplacedtheroyalcrown, encircledwithflowersfromthevarious citiesofSpain.Amongthosepresent werethePresidentsofthetwoChambersoftheCortes,togetherwiththe granddignitariesoftheState,ina placespeciallyallottedtothematthe footofthealtar,andtheyweresurroundedbytheAmbassadorsofforeign countries.Eightotherspecialtribunes wereoccupiedbytheladiesofthe Court.TheArchbishopofToledo, assistedbyninebishops,celebratedthe RequiemMass,whichwaschantedby achoiroffiftyprofessionalsingers. Thefuneralservicewasofamost majesticcharacter,respondingtothe profoundsorrowcausedbytheQueen's death.ThefuneralorationwasdeliveredbytheBishopofSalmanca.

COUNTSCHOUVALOFF.

Anamusingbutscarcelyprobable storyhasrecentlycausedmuchmerrimentamongtheDiplomatic'Corpsin Berlin.Atadinnergivenbythe CountessKarolyi,thewifeofthe Austro-HungarianAmbassador,Count Schouvaloff,sufferingfromtheheat, whisperedtoagentlemanintimately connectedwithoneoftheBritishPlenipotentiaries,"howheshouldlikesome B.andS.(brandyandsoda),butfor Heaven'ssakedon'tbetraymetoour amiablehostess!"TheCountess,who noticedthatsomeremarkhadpassedin referencetoherself,questionedtheEnglishdiplomatistastothewishesof CountSchouvaloff.Inordernotto exposetheCount'speculiartastethe gentlemanevasivelyreplied"thathis ExcellencymerelyreferredtoBeaconsfieldandSalisbury,"thefirstlettersto whosenamescorrespondtothoseofthe beveragessoardentlydesiredbythe Count.CountSchouvaloffinterposed, however,andturningtotheCountess said,"Pardonme,madam,Imusthave beenmisunderstood,forIwanted BatoumandSofia."Thesecasualwords significantlydenotedthecardinalpoints oftieCongress.

DEATHOFLORDBYRON'SGRANDDAUGHTER-IN-LAW.

LadyWentworth,whohadbeenin declininghealthfurthelasttwoyears, roseonSaturdaymorningatherresidenceinNorwoodandbreakfastedas usual,afterwardsshecomplainedof extremelassitude,andattherequestof hermedicaladviserretiredtoher chambertoliedown.Onhermaid enteringherroomathalf-pasteleven o'clock,shefoundhermistressdead uponthebed,lifehavingpassedaway withouttheslightestconvulsion.The deceased,Fannie,LadyWentworth, wasthirddaughterofthelateRev. GeorgeHeriot,ofFellowHills,county Berwick,andvicarofSt.Anne's,Newcastle-on-Tyne.ShemarriedonAugust 25,1869,LordWentworth,grandson ofGeorgeGordon,sixthLordByron, thepoet,andleavesissuebyhermarriage,theHon.AdaMary,born February,1871.

EFFICACYOFTHEWATER OF LOURDES.

AnIrishDominicanFatherwritesto theRosaryMagazine:-"Somemonths agoamanofrespectableposition,who hadbeenad.lictedtohabitsofintemperanceforyears,camefromadistance tome,andIgavehimasmallbottleof waterfromthefountainofLourdes. WhengiventohimIputhimonhis knees,andaskedhie'totakethepledge. Hesaidthathehaddonesooftenbefore, buthadneverkeptittwodays.Ithen repeatedtheformofthepledgeforhim, buthesaidhefeltconvincedthathe wouldhavesomestimulantbeforetwo hours.Igavehimthesmallbottle, andtoldhimwhileyetonhiskneestosay aHailMaryandtotakeonedropof thewater.Hedidso,anduponthe instanthesaidhewasconvincedthat withtheprotectionoftheBlessed Virginhewouldkeepthepledge.He wasatthattimeinashatteredstateof constitutionfromdrink.Hewent home,andinthecourseoftendayshe wrotetomeingoodspirits,sayinghe hadkepthispledge,andwasquite strong.Hepaidmeavisitlastweek hewasthepictureofhealthand happiness,andsaidthatfromthe momenthetastedthewaterhehad lostallthirstsforstimulants."

VIGOROUSDENUNCIATIONOFADE-

MORALISINGDRAMA.

Loathingandnausea,theAthenerunt protests,arethefeelingsprovokedby thedramaticversionofCharlesDicken's "OliverTwist,"calledNancySikes, whichwasproducedattheOlympicon Tuesdayweek.Atiresomecaricature intheopeningscenes,NancySikes developesiuthelaterintoabrutaland degradingmelodrama.Itisaplaythe wholeeffectofwhichisdepraving andifevertheinterferenceofauthority topreventtheemploymentofthestage asameansofnationaldebasementcould bejustified,itwouldbejustifiedwith regardtosuchawork.Aspectatorin whomthehotri'oledetailsofmassacreat thecloseoftheplaydonotinspire nauseamusthavestrongnerves.The wholeexhibitionisaboutashealthy andasmuchofanentertainmentasthe sightofapublicexecution.Artis whollyunconcernedwiththeproductionofthepiece,andmoralityisconcernedonlysofarastoutteraprotest. Weaccordinglygiveneitheranalysis norcriticism,norwillwepilloryactors, someofwhomarecapable,byconnectingthemwithaworkforwhichin mercywewillwishaspeedyoblivion.

ANICESHIPONFIRE.

Averyremarkableincidentoccurred onthevoyageofoneoftheiceships latelyarrivedatBombayfromAmerica. Thevesselwasstruckbylightning, andtheelectricfluid,passingintothe bodyoftheshipthroughtheforemast, piercedaholesome10ft.indiameter throughtheiqe,meltingabout30tons, andsettingfiretoandslightlyburning someofthebeamsoftheshipinits passage.Itisseldomthatwehearof shipsbeingstruckordamagedinthis way.Thisisthemoreremarkableas thunderstormsatseaarefrequentlyof intenseviolence,andthetallmastsof anironvesselwouldappeartooffera greatattractiontothelightning.Itis possible,however,thatsuchcatastrophes aremorefrequentthanisimagined,and thatshipsthelost§ofwhichhasnever beenexplainedhavebeenstruckand havebeensoseriouslyinjuredasto havegonedownindeepwaterwithout

warning.Lighteningconductorsare notasgenerallyusedonboard-shipas theyshouldbe,probablyfromamistakenideawhichlargelyprevailsthat theyaffordanadditionalattractionto theelectricity,andsoendangerthesafety ofthevessel.

PETERTHEGREAT.

WithreferencetothewillofPeter theGreatthereisintheJulynumber oftheNineteenthCenturyanarticleby Mr.Thorns,inwhichhenotonlyshows thatNapoleontheGreatwasnotthe authorofthewillinquestion,as Berkholzatonetimeendeavouredto prove,butgivesgoodgroundsfor believingthatBerkholz'spamphletwas inspiredbytheRussianGovernment, andthatthepublicitywhichhaslately beengivetohisviewsisduetothe sameinfluence.Itisamatterofstill greaterimportancetonote,however, thatinthispaperMr.Thornsdemonstratesthatthewillismucholderthan Napoleon'stime,FredericktheGreat ofPrussiahavingbeentoldbyhis MinisterPodowilsthattheRussian EnvoyKaiserlinehadadmittedhaving seenit(thewill)inPeter'sownhandwriting.Forthis,itshouldbeobserved, nconclusion,andforsimilarevidence, Mr.ThomsisindebtedtotheresearchesofDr.KoseramongtheBerlin archives.

EXTRAORDINARYCONTENTIONBETWEENLORDSSALISBURYANDDERBY INTHEHOUSEOFPEERS.

DuringthecourseofthenobleMarquistheForeignSecretary'sspeech,he said,inallusiontothespeechalready deliveredbytheEarlofDerby,"We havehadto-nightarepetitionofthat whichwehavefrequentlywitnessedin recenttimes-arevelationfromthe darkinterioroftheCabinet,.(Laughter). Infact,whenevermynoblefriend speaksliehasanewinstalmentofrevelationstomake.(Laughter).Ithink thisisthethirdspeechwhichhehas deliveredsincehelefttheCabinet,and everyoneofthemcontainedarevelation. CATHOLICFAMILY-LIFE.

FatherColeridge,writingsomelittle timebackofCatholicfamily-lifeasit wastwocenturiesagoinEngland,and contrastingitwithwhatitisnow-a days,said,inallusiontoCatholicsofthe si.venteenthcentury,uponwhose careerhewasatthemomentcommenting,andwhohadlongbeforepassedto theirreward-"PerhapsMargaretand ElisabethMeaty°andtheirnieces mighthaveseemedsomewhatslowand old-fashionedtomanyaCatholicgirlof theirageatthepresenttime.We shouldimaginethattheyspentlesson theirdressandmoreincharity,that theywerelessfamiliarwiththeyoung gentlemenoftheiracquaintanceand morewiththepooroftheirneighborhood.Wedonotsupposethatthey wouldhavelookedwithmuchfavouron aninvitationtotakeacigar,andthey wouldprobablyrunoutoftheroom ratherthanbepresentatamodern rounddance.Theywouldhaveconsideredanofferofaseattoseethe GrandDuchessdeGeroleteinaninsult, andifbyanymi.,Mrtunetheyhadbeen entrappedintobeingpresentatthator manyothermodernplaysofthesame kindwithoutknowingwhattheywere goingtosee,theywouldnotbeseenat Communionthenextmorningwithout firstgoingtoconfession.Theyprobablydressedsoberlyandbehaved modestlywhentheywenttochurch, anddidnotmaketheporchofthe buildingaplacetergossip.Theywere ignorantofthelastscandalinhighlife orofthelastattackonthetruthsofthe Creed.Intheseandequallyimportant matterstheywouldhavebeenundoubtedlyinferiortotheyoungCatholicgirlsofthedaysinwhichwelive. Butitisofsuchstuffastheywere madeofthatthehumantreasuresof' theChurchareformed.Soulssuchas thesearecapable,whenfortifiedby grace,ofthenoblestsacrificesthatGod asksofthosewhomHedrawsnearto Himself,anditistotheprayersofsuch astheywerethatweoweitinagreat PleasurethatthereistheCatholicFaith andtheCatholicChurchinthecountry inwhichwelive."Intheforegoing Massagethereismuchgentlewisdom, mingledwithinnocentbanter'.

TurningfromVictoriatoNewSouth WaleswefindthateventhereSecularismandSectarianismisrife.-Inan articleon"TheUniversityGrant"the Freeman'sJournalwrites TheUuiversityprofessestobeunsectarian,buttheveryatmosphereisgrowing Protestant.Theyhavesucceededinousting everyCatholicbu4onefromtheBoardof Fellows;theyseemnowtowanttooust everyCatholicfromtheUniversity altogether,andthat,apparently,through theinstrumentalityofMr.JosephLeary. NewZealand,wefindinthatcolony, wheretheenormoussumof£470,000 isannuallyspentinEducation,the systemofinstructionisasecularand godlessone,andassuchcannotbe acceptedbyCatholics,andincommentingontheFnancialStatementofthe TreasurerintheHouseofAssembly, theNewZealandTabletmakesthe followingseverestricturesonthe godlesssystemofEducation,supported bytheState:-

"ThepictureofNewZealand'spresent andfutureprospectstherecouldbelittleto findfaultwith,werepubliceducationputon aproperfooting.Butifthepresentsystem ofGodlessandone-sidededucationbeperservedin,thereiseveryreasonforbelieving thatanunstablepopulation,withoutknowledgeofGodandwithoutreligious,and consequentlywithoutsocialprinciples,must growupintheland,andbringconfusionand ruinonthecountry.Itistobehopedthat SirGeorgeGrey'sMinistrywillreconsider theirattitudeinreferencetodenominational schools;andwhilstmaintainingsecular schoolsforsuchaswillhavethem,ifneeds must,treatdenominationalschoolswith justicebyputtingthemonafootingof equalitywiththeothers,sofaratleastas thecapitationallowanceof£4perheadof averageattendanceisconcerned.Denominationalistsasratepayersareentitledto demandmore,forwhyshouldthey,notonly contributetothesupportbutalsothe erectionofschoolsforotherpeople,andnot havearighttoclaimsupportfortheirown schools,andthesumsrequiredforthebuildingoftheseschools.

MILESv.BLADE.-ThecaseofMiles v.Slade,theResidentMagistrateof Fremantle,andwhichwasrecenytriedin theSupremeCourt,andresultedinaverdict againstMr.Sladefor476and£15Urespectively,hascausedmorethanusualpublic discussion.ItisrumouredthattheGovernmentpurposeaskingforanewtrialasthey arenotbyanymeanssatisfiedwiththe verdicts.Publicopinionishowevercompletelyinaccordwiththedecisionsofthe Jury,andshouldeventheChiefJusticegrant a!IOWtrial,whichisverydoubtful,the Governmentwouldunderallthecircumstancesactmorewiselybyacceptingtheir firstlosswithasmuchgoodagraceas possibleandnotruntheriskofasecondand probablymorecrushingdefeat.

THESANDALWOODTRADE.-TheSandalwoodTrade,oneofourmostimportant industriescontinue&inaverydullstate,and recentadvicesfromIndiaandChinadonot givemuchgroundsforexpectinganearly changeinitscondition.Thoughthefalling offintheSandalwoodTradehasdonemuch toaddtothegeneraldepressionamong laborersandothersinTowns,therecanbe verylittlequestionthatthecolonywill ultimatelybenefitbythetemporaryblow whichtheSandalwoodTradehasexperienced. PornLao Sunday,the15th inst.,HisLordshiptheBishop,announcedin theCathedralChurch,thatananswertothe congratulationsoftheArchbishopand BishopsofAustralia,toPopeLeo,onhis elevationtotheSupremePontificate,which badbeenforwardedtoRomebytelegram, andinwhichhisLordshiphadjoined,had beenreceivedfromtheCardinalSecretary ofState.HisHolinessthankedtheArchbishopandBishopsfortheirfelicitations,and Rentthem,theirclergy,andthepeopleof theirdioceses,hisApostolicBenediction. EXODUSOFCOLONISTS.-Itisafacttobe lamouted,thatbyeverydepartureofthe RobRoy,betweentwentyandthirtypersons leavethecolony.Thesedeparturesaccumulatingfrommonthtomonth,representa considerablefigureinthecourseofayear.

Alargepercentageofvoyageursconsistsof youngcolonists,whooughttobeable,ifany personscould,toobtainaneasylivelihoodin thecolony.Thereason,allegedfortheir departurebythosewholeave,isthatthereis noopeningsatpresentforyoungmen,and noimmediateprospectoftimesundergoing muchimprovement.Itseemstousaquestionablemeasureofpublicpolicytotalkof introducingAsiaticswhenthechildrenof thesoilcannotworkoutacomfortable living.Theonlyeffectoftheproceedings mustbe,ifcircumstancesremainastheyare, toincreasetoastilllargerextenttheexodus whichineventhemostmodifiedform,every well-wisherofthecolonymustdeplore.

TasSeason.-Fromallpartsofthecolony themostpleasingaccountshavebeen receivedastotheappearanceofthecrops, andeverythingleadstothehope,thatthe colonywillbeblessedwithanabundant harvest.Shouldtheseasoncontinuepropitious,thebenefittothecolonywillbeimmense,astherecanbenodoubtmachofthe generalstaguation,somuchandsogenerally complainedofisowingtotheverybad seasonswehavehad,andtothenecessity thathasbeenofsendingtotheothercolonies forflour,grain,andmanyotherarticles, whichshouldhavebeenproducedinthe Colonyitself.Theconstantdrawonour resourcesforbreadstuffs,andalsothe absenceofanyreciprocalinter-colonial'rade, havenodoubt,producedthe"hardtimes," ofwhichsomanybitterlycomplain.Letas hopethattheexpectationsofanabundant harvestmayhefullyrealized,andthatanew andmoregenerally aserainour colonialhistory,may ttherefrom.

CHINESEhIMIGRATION.-Thequestionof ChineseImmigrationhasbeenwellventilated inthecolumnsofourcontemporaries,andit isverycleartoanyimpartialreader,that publicopinionistotallyagainsttheintroductionofthe"HeathenChinee."Itis certainlysatisfactorytofindthatthereare inthiscolonysettlerswhodesiresomething morethanmere"cheaplabor,"andwho muchpreferthesettlementamongstusofa goodindependentclassbothoftradesmen andyeomanry,tothepresenceofacheap butmiserablyslavishhordeofAsiatics,whose onlyrecommendation,istheir"lowwage," andtheirinordinateloveforopiumand strongdrinks.Exampleastheoldadage says,isbetterthanprecept,andwhenwe learnthatinAmerica,andintheneighboringcoloniesofNewSouthWales,Queensland,andNorthAustraliathepresenceof theMongolianisthecauseofsomuch anxiety,andissoobnoxioustothepeople generally,weareforcedtotheconclusion, thatpopularopinioninthiscolonywhichis almostunanimouslyagainsttheintroduction ofChinese,iscorrect,andshouldreceivedue attentiononthepartofourGovernment.

ED1JCATION.-TheAnnualReportofthe CentralBoardofEducation,fortheyear 1877,hasbeenissuedfromtheGovernment Press.TheReport,oftheBoarditselfcalled fornospecialremarks,buttheReportofthe Inspector,whichisattachedthereto,isparticularlyinteresting.TheInspectorremarks:-"ThenumberofGovernment schoolsopenatthecloseof1876,was61. Thenumberinoperation,atall,during1877 was60.Ofthese8wereopenforbroken periodsoftheyearonly.NonewGovernmentschoolswereestablishedin1877.The undenominationalAssistedschoolsat Lockvillewasclosedafterthefirstquarter oftheyear,thusreducingthenumberof theseschoolsto21."Theaverageattendance ofchildrenatGovernmentschoolsduring 1877,was2,043,andinAssistedschools1,053, andthepercentageofattendanceinGovernmentSchoolstoenrolmentwas80andin Assistedschoolsforthesameperiod79.The costoftheGovernmentschoolswas£6103 2s.7d.andthatoftheAssistedschools£1448 7s.5d.,andthecostperheadofscholarsin theGovernmentschoolswas£35s.8d.,and inAssisted£112s.2d.Theincreasingyearly amountoftheeducationgrantdemandsthe seriousattentionofourrulers,andthe differenceinthecost,perhead,ofchildren educatedintheGovernmentschools,ascomparedwiththeAssistedismoststriking,and plainlyshowshowmuchtheAssistedsystem ofeducationistobepreferredtothatwhich ispurelygovernmental,oneconomical groundsalone.IftheGovernmentdonot insistuponsettlersgivingsomeassistance towardstheerectionofschool-housesinthe variousdistricts,itisquiteevidentthatthe totalcostofeducation,willerelong,reach suchanamount,aswillnotfailtoalarmthe publicas astheGovernmentitself.The costoftheEducationalDepartments,we maynoteinpassing,inNewZealandand Victoria,hasweobservefromrecentpapers tohand,causedconsiderablepublicdissatisfaction,andifourGovernmentarenot cautious,thesamewillbetheresultin WesternAustralia.Theindividualschool reportsoftheInspectorare,asregardsthe Assistedschools,onthewholeverysatisfactory,andconsideringthedifficultiesunder whichthemanagersofAssistedschoolslabor, itiscertainlycreditabletothem,aswellas totheCatholicbody,thattheInspectorof schoolscanreportupontheminsuchvery favorableterms.

AlthoughtheHolyFatherdoesnot doubtthatthegovernmentswhich,on thisoccasion,senttheirspecialrepresentativee,neverintendedtosharethe viewsoftherevolution,itremains established,nevertheless,thatthe revolutionists,aswellastheCatholics ofallcountries,interpretedtheactions ofthosegovernmentsasifsuchhadbeen theirintention.

Thereis,then,noroomforsurprise, ifinthefaceofsogreatanoffence offeredtotheSupremeHeadofthe Church,thelawfulSovereignofthe PontificalStates,asimilarcourseof actionmaycontributetowardskeeping theseveryCatholicsinastateof dissatisfactionthatsometimesmanifests itselfinamannerbynomeansagreeabletocertaingovernments,eitherinthe pressorinAssemblies.

WhiletheMinistrywasworking indirectlytoobtainfromtheecclesiasticalauthoritiestheconcessionsit desired,itwasgettingupagrand demonstration,undertheeyesofthe Pope,tohonorthemanwhohad despoiledhimofhisStatesandofthe temporalitiesoftheChurch,andwho, forsevenconsecutiveyears,hadallowed notonlytheChurch,theclergyand theSovereignPontifftobepublicly outragedineverypossibleway,hut alsothemostsacredprinciplesofour holyreligion,withoutexceptingthe worshipoftheSaints,theBlessedVirgin, andofGodHimself.
