Afootracefor£200asidefora distanceof200yardshasbeendefinitelyarrangedbetweenWatsonand Aplett,tocomeoffatMaitlandonthe 2ndNovember.

Reynolds,theGermanpedestrian, commencedhisattempttowalk100 milesintwenty-fourhoursattenp.m. onthe14thSeptember,butgaveup nextafternoon.Afterhavingdone aboutsixty-sevenmileshebecamevery ill,andwasobligedtoberemoved.

Tobacco,colonialgrownandmanufactured,showedanincreaseoffrom8000 cwt.to19,000cwt. 14tothepresenttime650milesof railwayareopenedforpassengertraffic inthiscolony.Variouslinesarebeing constructedattherateofeighteen milesannually,and208milesarenow underconstructionindifferentdirections.

ThesquattersofNewSouthWales arecombiningtocarryoutMort's frosenmeatproject.Largesumshave beencontributed,especiallybythe Riverinasquatters.choseconnected withthepastoralandgrazinginterest inQueenslandareco-operatinginthe movement.

Afreeselector'sconferencehasbeen heldatSydney.Aresolutionwas passedthatthepracticeofsellingland byvirtueofimprovementsshouldbe abolished.Amotionwasalsocarried infavoroftheabolitionofcommissioners andthesubstitutionofalandboardof fivemembersandachairman,tobe appointedbytheGovernment,members tobeelectedeverythreeyears,with therighttoappealtotheMinisterof Landsortothemetropolitanland board,ifsuchshouldexist.The principlewasaffirmedtignolandbill willbeacceptabletothecountryunless thesameweredealtwithonfixed principles,thedetailstobeframedby localboardssubjecttoExecutiveapproval.Aresolutionwasadoptedin favorofthecontinuanceofpre-leases, andcondemnationofthenon-residence clause.Mr.Farnell,thePremier,has promisedtoconsiderthesuggestions madebytheconference.

Avaluableseamofcoalhasbeen struckonMrs.Hannel'sestateat Wickham,atadepthof160feet. Theseamissevenfeetoneinch thick.

Thequantityofsugarmanufactured inNewSouthWales,duringtheyear endingMarchlastamountsto150,744 lb.,showinganincreaseforlastyearof 56,784lb.

BaronMacleay,theNewGuinea explorerandnaturalist,stronglyadvocatestheformationofazoological stationatSydneysimiliartothatat Naplesandelsewhere.

Since1872thetotalamountofland alienatedis16,926,626acres,ofwhich 9,965,873acreshavebeenfreeselections;whilethepresentGovernment sold578,770acresbyauctionandunder improvements.

TheUnder-SecretaryforMines,Mr. Wood,andtheGeologicalSurveyor, havereturnedtoSydneyafteratourof investigationoftheWesterndistrictsof thecolony,retheapplicationforassistancefromthegrantof£5000inaidof prospecting.Shortlyasimiliarinquiry willbemadeinthenorthsadsouth districts.

Theestimatedpopulationofthecolony onthe30thJunewas675,316,showing anincreaseof13,014sincetheendof lastyear. ThestatisticsofthetradeandcomcoerceofNewSouthWales,just published,showthattheimpartsfor 1877amountedtoabout£14,500,000, andtheexportstoabout£13,250,000, showing,onreferencetothepastnine Tears,73percent.increaseonthe imports,andonly32percent.increase ontheexports.Theexportstothe adjoiningcoloniesfelllastyear25per cent.Thewoolexportwas5,260,000 DeTheDumberofeerployffsin

twosbanquettookplaceafterwards, atwhichtheMinisterofRailways,in respondingfortheMinistry,statedthat thecontractfortheAlburysectionof eighty-fourmileswastobecompleted byDeoember,1880,whenthetwocapitals,SydneyandMelbourne,wouldbe connectedbyrail.

AtameetingoftheAgricultural Society,theGovernorpresiding,itwas decidedtocarryouttheInternational Exhibitionof1879.TheGovernor cordiallysupportedthisproposal,asinvolvingthehonorofthiscolony.The meetingresolvedontheorganisationof aschemeforthecollectionofsubscriptions,andtoobtainaproportionate amountofaidfromParliament.Public subscriptionsfortheInternationalExhibitionhavealreadyreached£3000.

TheCabinetareconsideringaproposedflomVictoriatojoininsubsidisingaCapeservice.Decisionisasyet unsettled.

Itisestimatedthatthesumof £150,000willberequiredtocomplete thenewPostOffice.Theworkwill beproceededwithatanearlydate.

ParliamentwasopenedonTuesday, the10thSeptember.TheGovernor's speechsaysthatthedefencesofthe colonyarebeingproceededwith.It alludestotherenewaloftheBorder TreatywithSouthAustralia,sadthe effortswhicharebeingmadetobring aboutthecustomsunionwithother colonies;announcesthattheproposed issueofaloanofonemillionanda-half hasbeenpostponed,owingtotheunsettledstateoftheEnglishmoney market;promisesprovisionfora sewerageandwatersupplyforthecity andsuburbs,andotherpartsofthe colony;alsotheintroductionofthe followingmeasuresviz.:-TheElectoralAmendmentLilyBill,abillto consolidatelawsrelatingtoethecityof Sydney,&c.,alargeendowmentbill relatingtotheinsane,abilltoconsolidateandamendthelandlaws,andconnectedtherewithabilltoamendthe lawsrelatingtodividingfences;also severalotherswhichareconsideredof minorimportance-billstoconsolidate criminallaw,amendlicensinglaw,to consolidatethecustomlaws,consolidate thepublicdebt,andthefurtherendowmentoftheUniversityofSydney. Estimateswillbesubmittedatanearly dateforrailwayproposalsembracing theconstructionof1000milesoflines fortheconsiderationofParliament. ElevenmemberssatontheGovernment benches,twelveontheOpposition,and eighteenonthecrossbenches,including SirH.Parkes.SirJ.Robertson severelycriticisedtheadministrative actsoftheGovernmentduringthe recess.Hedeniedthatthecolonywas inaprosperousstate,andstatedthat theactionoftheGovernmentinthe administrationofthelandlawshad injiiredthepubliccredit.Theaddress wascarriedwithoutadiscussion.The Treasurerpromisedtointroduceabill toabolishthedutyongold.Abillto prohibittheimportationofgrapesand grapevineswasreadafirsttime.

TheUnderwritens'Associationhave resolvedtopresentCaptainBinnie,of theCairnbulg,withatestimonialin recognitionofthenavigationofhisship toSydneyunderdifficultcircumstances.

Whenthesteamerhadsettleddownin thecovesomeabortiveattemptswere madetolaunchtheboats.Twoofthe boatsweresmashedrightaway,anda third,inwhichtherewerethreemen, capsized.Twoofthemenswamashore withoutdifficulty,andthethirdclung totheboatuntilhiscomradesrendered himassistance.Whenthethreemen hadlandedontherockslineswere passedfromthesteamertotheshore andmadefast,andthenthepassengers werelanded.Asthemorningadvanced andthetidefell,thevestedsettleddown firmlysothataplankroadcouldbe laidcommunicatingwiththerocks; thedonkeyenginewarsettowork,and agangofmenalsogotthecargooutof themainhold,inwhich,whenthetide wasatitslowest,therewasaboutfive feetofwater.Alifeboatwaspulledto within200yardsoftheship,andthe captainonbeinghailedstatedthat assistancewasnotrequired,asthe passengerswereabletomaketheirway overtheplankingtotheshore.The mailswerenextsafelylanded.The CityofNewcastlewhenafloatrepresentedavalueof£16,000.Shewasuninsured,theH.R.N.S.Companytaking theirownrisk.Aftersomeofthe cargowassaved,thesteamerbrokein two,verylittleofhermachine',having beenrecovered.

QUEENSLAND.

Aboat'screwfromtheMayQueen, schooner,anislandtrader,landedtoget waterontheislandofPentecostonthe 16thAugust.Amobofnatives,who werelyinginambush,rushedtheboat, andfatallytomahawkedBrown,the mate,andoneofthecrew.FourTanna boyswhojumpedoverboardandswam tothevessel,werefiredatwithmuskets andarrows.Thebodiesofthetwo murderedmenwereafterwardsrecoveredmuchmutilated.

ThecutterNeiser,ofNewcastle,was wreckedonBing'sReef,nearTownsville,andthecrewmurderedbythe blacks.

Regulationsforthere-constructionof thevolunteerforcehavebeenissued. Theappointmentofcommissioned officerswillbevestedintheGovernor. Theywillberequiredtoundergo examinationsandtakejuniorrankwith officersofthepermanentforceinthe colony.'Thepaymentswillrangefrom £100perannumtothelieutenantcolonelofartilleryandintentlyto£12 toprivatesofalldivitiontofthe force.

AdemonstrationtookplaceatWagga Waggaonthe8rdofSeptember,in celebrationoftheopeningofthesection ofrailwayfromJuneetoNorthWagga, threemilesfromtheMurrumbidgee riveratWaggaWagga.TheMinisters,whowereaccompaniedbyseveral membersoftheNewSouthVitalet Parliament,wek-epresentedwithan address.MissBurns,thedaughterof thePostmaster-General,thendeclared thelineopenbybreakingabottleof champagneoveranengine.Asump-

TheAppropriationBill,including theMainLineRailwayinterest amount,hasbeenreadathirdtimein theCouncil,andpassedonadivision byeighttosix.TheColouialSecretarysaidthattheGovernmentwould notconsenttoarbitrationinanyclaim forinterestwhilstthetrainsranonlyto Evendale.

TheTimesofthe28thofAuguststates thatnofintherparticularsofthis tragedyhaveyetbeenreceived,but thereseemsnoreasontodoubtthe veracityofthereport.

NEWGUINEA.

TheEllangowan,missionaryschooner, hasarrivedatCooktownfromNew Guinea,Messrs.ChalmersandChester bothmakemostinterestingreportsof thediscoveriesmadebytheprospectors whoproceededinlandfromCatamaran Bay.Theypassedovergroundand throughdistrictsneverpreviously troddenbywhitemen.Eighteen villageshavebeendiscovered,which areverypopulous,andthenativesare iutelligeut,kindanddocile,but singularlyformalandsuperstitious. Someofthevillagesaresituated2700 feetabovethesealevel,andthereisno sicknessaboutthem.Sevenrivers, alllarge,andmanyrivuletshadbeen discovered;alsothreemountains,and extensivebaysandlakes.Thecountry wassplendidlysuppliedwithwater,and thelandwasveryrich,growingforests ofcocoanuts,bananas,figsandinnumerableothertreesbearingfruitsfitfor food.Thenativescookedinearthenwarepots.Theyalsospokethesame languageasthecoasttribes.

NewsfromNewGuineato18th AuguststatedthattheEmilyparty havebeenfurtheruptheGoldieRiver thanwherethecolonistpartyhave obtainedstrongcolors.Theyexpect toobtainpayablegoldassoonasthe river,whichisgoingdown,leavesthe bedbare.Theexplorationthrough thescrubisverydifficult,butthe neighborhoodnowisfairlyhealthy.

TheschoonerProspectarrivedat Cooktownon1stSeptemberfromPort Moresby,inNewGuinea.Shebrings thefollowingintelligence:-Therains havestopped,andtherivers.arenow down,andallarewell.Alltheprospectingpartieshavegoneinlandon thestrengthofreportsreceivedby themfromthefront.Itisexpected thatsomethinggoodhasbeendiscoveredbythepartiessentiuadvanee.

AboutthesametimeBaptiste,the chief,andoneortwoofhismen,togetherwithhisdaughter,werekilled atMoindon,fifteenmilesfromthe sconeoftheengagementwithAtai, byadetachmentunderLieutenant Marechal.Afewdays'previouslyan attackmadebythreeorfourhundred nativesupontheFoa-postehadbeen repulsedandsomeblacksshot.The retreatingrebelswerefollowedup throughthebushhyafewvolunteers, headedbyMonsieurGullet,aGovernmentsurveyor,whofelluponaband ofthem.Theyfoughtatthepcintof thebayonet,fourbeinginfactkilled bythisweapon,andfiveotherswere severelywounded.Itishopedthat therevoltwillnowspeedilycollapse. Therebeltribesareperfectlyisolated, alargenumberoftheirfightingmen killed,andthewomenandchildren draftedintoothertribes,whosenames theywilltake.Therevoltedtribes mustdisappear;theirverynamewill becutoffoutoftheland,servingas awarningtoothertribes.Nothing isreportedfromotherpartsofthe islandofanconsequence.AllremainsquiemileThereisafeelingof uneasinessrespectingthenorth-western tribes.ThedefeatanddeathofAtai andBaptistemayhaveaveryexcellenteffectamongstthesetribeswhen thenewsbecomesknown.

AtanislandcalledMuca,oneofthe DukeofYorkgroup,oneofGodefrors tradersnamedSchasslerwasattacked bynatives,oneoftheirspearspiercing abuttonhole;bntheescapeduninjured, Imdorganisedapartytofighttheoffenders,and,afterpursuingthemfor somedays,threeorfourofthemwere killed.FrankCurnan,whbleftSydney intheJohanCeasr,wasonedayout coalingwithnativesofMucaIsland, andwasnotafterwardsseen.The nativesreportedthattheboatcapsized, andCurnanwasdrowned;butafterwardsitwasreportedthattheunfortunatemanhadbeentakenonshore, murdered,andthenthrownintothe sea.Feverandaguehavebeenvery prevalentinthegroup,andthesufferingsoftheEuropeanshavebeenvery great.Mr.Anderson,oneoftheGodefroy'straders,diedfromthediseasebn theJohanCesarwhileatNewBritain. AnaturalistnamedEbenerdiedonthe IslandofMucafromthesamedisease."

Onthe1stinst.,agrandattackupon therebelchief,Atai,andhismenwas decidedupon,totakeplaceatdaydawn thefollowingmorning.ThreehundredofCaptainServatt'sCauala natives,andfromfiftytosixtysoldiers andsailors,weretoldoffintothree detachmentsandmarchedagainstthe foe,theirmovementsbeingmaskedby athickmist,whosefriendlyaidve.y muchtendedtothesuccesswhichwas destinedtorewardtheeffortsofthe attackingside.Stealthilymovingonwards,thehilluponwhichAtaiwas knowntobewithhistribeswas graduallyneared.Ouecolumnremainedonguard,theotherssurrounded thehill;oneportionofthisforcebeing ledbyCaptainServan,whilstanother Frenchofficerwasattheheadofthe secondcolumn.Servau,seeinghis

TheGermanbarqueJohanCesarhas returnedtoSydneyfromacruisetothe SouthSeaIslands,andbringsnewsof themassacre,offiveWeeleyanteachers, thefollowingaccountofwhichisgiven intheSydneyEveningNews:-"About Easter,fiveoftheRev.GeorgeBrown's teachers.namedrespectivelyLevi, Silas,Timothy,Ben,andanother,who werestationedatMalicola,New Britain,andwhowerefriendlywiththe coasttribes,incautiouslyventuredinlandsometenmiles.Thebushnatives, whoarehostiletothecoastnatives, surrounded,theteachers,andattacked themwithspearsandclubs,killingthe wholeparty,whowereunarmed,and thereforeperfectlydefenceless.The poorfellowswerequicklydespatched, andtbeirremaiuscookedandeatenata nativefeast,andamidthemostbarbarousceremonies.Twodaysafterthe eventanexpeditionwasformedto avengethedeathoftheteachers,who wereFijians,andbythejointactionof Mr.Brown'spartyandthefriendly coastnativesastrongforcewasorganised,andamovementmadeagainst theoffenders.Theyarrivedatthe villagewherethemassacretookplace, androustedalargebodyofnatives. Afterthefirstskirmish,however,the nativesshowedfightwithspears, arrowsandslingstones.Bushfighting andskirmrsbingcontinuedthroughout theday.Thenumberkilledand woundedwasestimatedatbetween50 and150.Frothamostauthentic sourcewelearnthatoneoftholekilled wasaFijianclergymanOflong.and faithfulservicesid-themissionarycause, andhisdeathisverymuch'regretted bytheteachersandnatives.Mr. Brownandhispartydestroyedthe. nativevillage,andthehostilitiesceased,

Amongthemostremarkablefeatures oftheprogressmadeinmoderntimes arethenewmaterialswhichhavebeen addedtotheancientlist.Goldand silver,copper,iron,lead,etc.,these havebeenfamiliarforthousandsof years,butitisonlycomparatively recentlythattheexistenceofother metalshasbeet.demonstrated.The lastdiscoverediscalledgallium,and possessedsuchsingularprupettiesasto seemenchanted.Ingeneralappearance itlookslikelead,thoughitisnotofso blueacolour,andmightbetermedan exaggeratedleadonaccountofthe extremefacilitywithwhichitcanlie melted.Aututiouutofheatlessthan thatofthehand(86dog.F.)reducesit toastateoffusion,whenitresembles quicksilver.Thoughsubjectedtocold downtozero,itdoesnotbecomehard again,butremainsliquidmetaltill touchedwithapieceofsolidgallium, whenitreturnstc,itsoriginalcondition asifbeneaththewandofamagician. Aspeciesofalummaybederivedfrom itnottobedestinguishedfromcommonalumwithoutchemicalanalysis. Galliumisflexible,andcanbehammered likelead,orcutwithaknifebutit onlybecomesslightlytatnichedina dampatmosphere.Itcrystallisesin theshapeofanoctahedron.Atpresentitisararemetal,onlyabouta dozengrainshavingbeenextracted fromhalf-a-tonofsine-bleudefromthe Pyrenees.Thediscoveryisagreat triumph,andatestimonytothetruth ofscientifictheories,becauseitwas forseeubythreeindependentobservers sometimebeloredemonstration.Mr. Newlauds,anEnglishchemist,bad severalyearsbeforeexpressedhis beliefintheexistenceofametalofthe kind.M.Mendelejeff,aRussian,predictedfromastudyoftheatomic numbersoftheelements,thatametal wouldbefoundtofillavacantspacein theseries,and-actuallygaveitsprobablespecificgravity,whichagrees closelywiththeresultofexperiments withgallium.Finally,M.Lecoqde Boisbaudnan,followingupanoriginal systemofspectrumanalysis,appliedthe zinc-blondeforthisverypurpose,producedthemetalitself,andgaveitfrom France(Gaul),thecountryinwhich thediscoverywas.made,thenameof gallium.

DREADFULCOLLIERYACCIDENTS.

Anotherdreadfuldisasterhashadtobe addedtothatterriblelistofcalamitiesby whichthepublichasbeenappalledsovery recently.Thenews,thistimecomesfrom theWelshcollieries.OnWednesdayafternoonafrightfulexplosiontookplaceatthe PrinceofWalesPit,Abercarne,nearNewport,belongingtotheEbbwValeColliery Company,withinafewsecondsdoomingto destructionasmanyas280ofthepoor,hardworkingminers.Ateleveno'clockinthe morning371men"wentdownintothepit," thevastmajorityofthem,asthelapseofa fewhoursshowed,onlytooliterally.The frame-workandcastingsofthepit,whenthe astoundingdetonationtookplace,weredriven intotheairtotheheightoffully300feet abovethemouthoftheshaft.Eightyfour werebroughttothesurfaceasquicklyas possiblemoreorlessmutilated,fourfearfullyburnt,ninebeingalreadydead.The minewasfoundtobeonfire,toextinguish whichtherewasnoalternativeremedybut flooding.Thecatastropheisthemost seriousthathaseveroccurredintheSouth WalesDistrictAllMonmmtliahireis aghastatthecalimity,andaroundthescene oftheexplosionthereistiemostdistressing excitement.

C.OrphanageforGirls.Numberofchildren onroll,67eightofwhomaremaintained byprivate-funds.Therehasbeennosickness amongtheinmatesduringthepastquarter thechildrenwereneatlydressed,andappearedhealthyandwellfed.

Iexaminedtheprovisions;theywere goodinquality,andthechildrenarenot stinted.

AsthemaintenanceofourOrphanagesisanexceedinglyheavyburden, andtheimprovementsontheOrphanage premises,referredtobytheInspectorin hisReport,haveonlybeenaccomplished ataconsiderableoutlay,wewouldurge uponournumerousreadersthenecessitythereisofrenderingtothe ManagersofourOrphanagesallthe assistancetheycanpossiblyextend. Charityneverceaseth,andaslongas thereispoverty,want,anddistress,in thisworld,solongwillthereremainthe obligationofexercisingchristianbenevolenceandphilanthrophy.Weknow that"Funds"jestnowaremuchrequired,andwehopeagenerouspublic willnotbeappealedtoinvainfor assistance.

Now,itisasignificantfactthatthe latenobleMarquisGinoCapponi, warnedhisfellow-citizens,inthesenate ofFlorence,beforethetransferofthe CapitaloftheNewSardo-Italian KingdomfromFlorencetoRome,that suchastepwouldbetheruinbothof hisnativecityFlorence,andofRome, aswellasofthenewlyestablished "KingdomofItalyitself."These propheticutterancesofGinoCapponi areeachdaymeetingwithawonderful verificationinunhappyItaly.Itis worthwhile,forthemoralthereof,to glancebackatthereportofthestormy debateinthesenateofFlorence,on December29th,1870-uponthe questionoftheformalannexationof RomeandthePapalStatestothenew "ItalianKingdom."Thenitwasthat GinoCapponi-blindandtottering undertheweightofhis78wintersmadethefollowingtrulyprophetic speech:-

Someofthelivingwere,however,in suchaprostrateconditionthatbutfor thehelptheyreceivedtheymusthave beenaddedtothelistofthedead. ThevesselwhichranintothePrincess AliceissaidtohavebeenasceewcolliergoingtotheNorthlightin ballast,andshewasinchargeofapilot, saidtobenamedDicks.Captain Grindsteadwasnotseenafterthe accident,buthewasobservedathis postshortlybeforethecollision.A largeproportionofthepassengerswere ontheupperorsaloondeck,andmust haveseenbeforehandtheirimpending doom;butthoseinthesternofthe vesselhadnowarninguntiltheyheard thecrashandfoundtheforepassengers runningaft.

Mr.W'atsfordmistakesourremarks andthepointinissuebetweenus whenheimpliesthatthereisany hostilityinourrelationtoWesleyan Christianity.Whatweobjecttoisthe veryfamiliarformofitwhichthe Rev.GeorgeBrownexemplifies.Havingobtainedfullerparticulars,weare nowinapositiontosubstantiatethe opinionspassedbyusonthefirstreceipt oftheintelligence.Itappearsthatin NewBritain,asinmanyotherislands ofthePacific,thecoastandinland tribesareonbadterms,andthatan intermittentseriesofreprisalsis goingonbetweenthem.Eitherparty isespeciallyjealousofanyintrusion uponitsdomain.Nowthenative teacherswhoweremurderedbelonged tothecoasttribes,andknewinenteringtheterritoryoftheirneighbors whatrisktheywererunning.They weretherefore,victims,notofany specialenmitytothemission,butofthe savagepracticesofthosewhoregarded alltheirraceasfoes.Itistruethat theRev.G.Brownmakesitappearthat heandhisassociateswereinimminent peril,andthismayhavebeenso fromthefactoftheirintimacy withthecoasttribes.Butitisprobablethatheexaggeratedthedanger, andwemustrememberthathetellshis ownstory,andisnaturallyanxiousto makeoutagoodcase.Thefactisthat themurderswereexcusablebythe savagecodeofwar,andthattheobject ofMr.Brown'sexpeditionwasto avengethem.Soatleastthenatives mustbelieve.Wecanafford,however,

ThemasterofoneoftheSydney tradingvesselshasmadethefollowing statementtotheEveningNewsofan extraordinaryproceedingonthe,partof oneoftheAnglicanmissiouary intheSolomonIslands.Itappears thatwhenthecaptainwasattheIsland ofYasbelle,hewastradingwithBara King,ofthenativevillageofBuckatoo, whoiswellknowntotradersinthose parts.Barsmadeacomplaintthattwo ofhistribehadbeenshotandone woundedinthemonthofAprilofthis year,bytheMelanesianteacherofthe place,whoresidedtherewiththeMurray Islandboy.ThechiefwasverydisconsolatedatthisnewformofChristianity, andwhentheteachercauseonboardhe wasquestionedabouttheshooting,and deniedit.Ourinformantthenbrought thekingandtheteacherfacetoface, anduponthelatterbeenaccusedofthe crimeheshrunkawayinamannerthat tendedtoconfirmtheaccusationmade againsthim.Thekingwasadvisedto representtheaffairtothemission vesselSouthernCrosswhenshenext called,anditwasreportedthatthe lattervesselafterwardstooktheteacher awayfromtheplace.

MurderandMaterialismatParis.

Extraordinarypublicinteresthas beenexcitedduringthelastfewdays bythetrialandcondemnationtodeath oftwoyoungmen,BarreandLebiez, forthefrightfulmurdercommittedon the23rdoflastMarch,atthelodgings ofBarre,intheRuedeHauteville. Paris,onapoormilkwornannamed Gillet,whomtheyhadascertainedto havesavedoutofherscantyearningsa smallsumofmoney.Barrehadbeen employedbyhertoinvestsomeofher accumulations,andinfactthewholeof herlittlefortunehadbeenplacedout atinterestintheshapeofrailwaybonds andothersecurities.MadameGillet wasdecoyedtothehouseofBarre, underpretenceof'fringinghimfour sons'worthofmilk,andtherebutchered bytheblowsofahammerinflictedby Barre,andstabswithasharpenedfile inflictedbyLebiez.Thelast-named murdererthenscientificallydissected thebodyintoanumberofportions, someofwhichwerepackedinatrunk, previouslyprovidedforthepurpose,and sentoffbyrailtoafalseaddressat

liens;theremainderbeingleftinan apartmenttheyhadhiredundera fictitiousnameintheRuePoliveatt. Usingthekeyofherroom,whichhe foundinthepocketofthemurdered woman,Barreransackedhereffects, andtookawayallherrailwayshares andotherscrip,whichprovedonexaminationtobemuchlessconsiderable inamountthanthemurderershadexpected.Someofthedocumentshad escapedtherobbers'search.Itwas partlythroughtheireffortstonegotiate thesebonds,andpartlyowingtothe discoveryofthemangledportionsofthe body,sorneattheRuePoliveau,and theothersattherailwaystation,Mans, thatdetectionwasbroughtabout.One ofthemostremarkablefeaturesinthis caseisthesuperioreducationofthe criminalsandtherespectableposition oftheirfamilies.Theywereboth educatedatthe"Lyeee,"orGovernmentPublicSchoolofAngers,where theycompletedtheirstudiesin1869, afterhavinggainednumerousprizes andhonours.Barrebecameclerktoa notary,andLebiezgraduatedin "letters"andmedicineattheUniversityofParis.Hesubsequentlybecame apubliclectureronnaturalphilosophy andeditorofalowRadicalprint,entitledthePereDuchesne.Bothyoung menentertainedextremeRadicaland infidelopinions,andwerehostileto religionandtheChurch.Theyhad bothbecomereducedtodesperate pecuniarystraitsbytheirdissoluteand extravaganthabitsoflife.Inalecture entitled"DarwinismandtheChurch," whichhegavesoonaftertheperpetrationofthemurder,Lebiezmaintained thefashionabletheoryofthedevelopmentofmanfromtheape,andasserted theirreconcilabilityofscienceand religiouwitheachother.lie,also,on thesameoccasion,maintainedthe Darwiniantheoryofthestrugglefor existenceandthesurvivalofthefittest; theright,thatistosay,ofthestrongest tolivehimself,andtorobandmurder others.Thefollowingisapassage fromthecopyofthisremarkable lecturewhichwasfoundinhislodgings andreadatthetrial:-"Theequilibriumthatexistsintheanimatedworld ofnaturewasnotbroughtaboutwithout thesacrificeofinnumerablehecatombs, andthereasonofsuchsacrificehas beenrightwellexplainedbyDarwin.
