TheUniversreportsanumberof miraculouscuresatLourdes.Within thelastfewdaysadressmakerhasbeen curedofgoitre;onWednesdayaworkwoman,whohadforeightyearssuffered fromatumourintheleftside,and othermaladiesconnectedtherewith, kneltdowninthewaterandwashealed. HernameisMdlleMarieGuyonnet. Anotherperson,Am6lieDescaves,has recoveredtheuseofadamagedeye, andhasalsobeenrelievedofatumour andswellingofthelegsofthreeyears duration.Thecorrespondentstates thatwhenthepilgrimagestartedhalf the400sufferershadtobecarried.On leavingLourdesonlyfiftyneededthat assistance.Thecures,therefore,had beennumerous.Thesamenumberof theUniverscontainsanarticlebyM. Dr.Hancock'sstatisticsofsavingsiu Irelaudshowsafallingoffof£1,000,000 indepositsandcashbalancesinjointstockbanksascomparedwiththe amountatmidsummerlastyear,when thetotalwas£32,746,000,andwhich amountwas£69,000lessthaninthe precedingyear.Previouslytherehad beenasteadyincreasesince1863,when thetotalwas£12,967,000.The TrusteeSavingsBankshowsadecrease indepositsof£17,000,orsomewhat lessthan1percent.,whilethePost officeSavingsBankshowsanincrease of£48,000,orupwardsof4percent. Thisincrease,however,ismuchbelow thoseofthetwoprecedingyears. Two"editors,"aCatholicandaProtestant,havetakenthetroubletocompile numerousextractsfromVenerableBede's "EcclesiasticalHistory,"astoauthority, dogma,anddiscipline.Theirobjectthey statetobeasfollows.TheArchbishopof Canterbury,whenpresidingatarecentConference,informedhishearersthathe"sat inAugustine'sChair;"andheevenwent further,andsaidthatS.Augustinewasnot aRomanCatholic,butanAnglican.Indeed, theonestatementwouldnecessarilyinvolve theother.IfS.Augurtineheldtheopinions ofDr.Tait-wecouldnotsaygravely,"held hisfaith"-itwouldfollowthatS.AugustinewasnotaCatholic;and,therefore,also thattheChairwhichhesatinmightbe reasonablynowoccupiedbyDr.Tait.However,thisis,perhaps,beggingthequestion; andthepointtobeascertainedis,wasS.
