TheBritishMedicalJournal,in speakinguponthegeneralhealthof boysundersixteenyearsofage,says: "Acelebratedphysiciantookforhis purposethirty-eightboys,agedfrom ninetofifteen,andcarefullyexamined them.Intwenty-sevenofthemhe discoveredinjurioustracesofthehabit. Wedonotpreciselyunderstandwhat thewritermeansbythislastsentence; forinpointoffacthighChurchAnglicansarenotasarule,-vehement, butrathergiventohairsplittingand subtleties;asforinstanceintheir "BranchChurch"theory.But Oxfordneednotcomplainifthepriests ofthatChurchwhichcreatedthe Universityshoulderecttheiraltarin St.Giles's,whenProtestantismforthe firsttimeonrecordpresumestobuild itshereticaltemples,withsomething likeostentatiousinsolence,asPopeLeo XIII.hasremarked,intheleadin3 thoroughfaresofRome.

OnChristmasEveinthefirstyear oftheEmpireoftheGreatNapoleon,a lieutenant-generalhadsomeofficersof rankandamarshalofFrancetodine withthem.Dinnerbeingover,some oneaskedhowtheyweretopassthe restoftheevening.Oneoftheguests answeredcarelessly,"Supposewego tomidnightMass.""Sobeit,"replied theothers.TheyenteredtheChurch ofS.Roch.Youmayformanideaof thedevotionoftheseomcers,wnowent tochurchafteraconvivialdinner merelybywayofcuriosityand pastime.Lookingaround,laughing, talkingwasalltheydid.Allatonce, however,thereappearedalittleman wrappedinalargecloak.Heresolutelyapproachedthemerrygroupsand observedinaquick,authoritativetone: "Gentlemen,youareactingbadly, verybadly.Whenyoucometochurch yououghttocomportyourselfwith propriety.Respectandsilence!"He saidnomore.Thatlittlemaninthe cloakwastheEmperorNapoleonhimself,whohadcometoassistatthe midnightMass.Youmayimaginethe astonishmentoftheofficerswhenthey hadrecognisedhim.Itisunnecessary toaddthatduringtheremainderofthe DivineOfficenotoneofthemsomuch asturnedhishead.Thesepoor ChristiansdidthroughfearofNapoleon whattheyoughttohavedonethrough loveofGodandtheInfantJesus.WeeklyRegister.

THEFISHERMANINOXFORD.

QueenChristinaofSpain-diedat St.Adresse,nearHavre,thenightof the21stAugust.MariaChristina Ferdinanda,themotheroftheexQueenIsabellaofSpain,wasaPrincess oftheRoyalhouseoftheBourbons, herfatherbeingthewell-known FrancisI.,KingofNaplesandtheTwo Sicilies,andsheherselfhissecond daughter.ShewasbornonApril27, 1806,andbecamethefourthwifeofthe thenKingofSpain,FerdinandII. ThiseccentricMonarchwhofirst opposeuhistatnerseesinghieprotection ofthegreatNapoleon,wasthenimprisoned,renouncedhisrights,regained hiskingdom,abolishedtheCortesand re-establishedtheInquisition,was marriedtoChristinaofNaplesonDec. 11,1829.Onthebirthofhis daughterIsabella,in1830,heabolished theSalicLaw,invirtueofwhichshe wouldhavebeendebarredfromthe successiontothethrone,whichwould havepassedtoheruncles,DonCarlos andDonFrancisco.In1833King Ferdinanddied,andtheInfanta.Isabella,thenthreeyears'ofage,was declaredQueen.TheQueen-Mother, Christina,assumedtheRegency,and foundherselfimmediatelyinvolvedina warwithDonCarlosandhisadherents.

Havre.Duringthefamouswarofthe SuccessioninSpainsheplayedthemost energeticpart,actedwithmarked decisionthroughout,anddisplayed moregoodqualitiesthanmanyQueens ofSpainarecreditedwithpossessing. Intheearlypartofhercareershe secretlymarriedherfavourite,Fernando Munez,formerlyanofficeroftheBody Guard,bywhomshehadseveral children.Threeyearsafterherexile fromSpainshepubliclymarriedhim andconferreduponhimthetitleofDuke ofRianzares.

DRINKING170YEARSAGO.

AwriterintheManchesterWeekly 71mcsfor17thAugust,1878,giving anaccountofSt.Ann'sChurch,Didsbury,ofwhichLadyBlandlaidthe foundationstoneonMay18th1709, says:--Threeyearsafterwardsthechurch wasconsecrated.Inthediaryofone EdmundHarrold,perukemaker,Ifind thefollowingentry-"July17.RemarkableforSt.Ann'sChurchconsecration,andagreatconcourseofpeople. Goodbusiness,andIsoberateight o'clockatnight,butIwasmerrybefore Iwenttobed."ThissameHarrold wroteagooddealofamusingmatterin hisdiary.InAugust,1713,hewas abouttobemarried,andhewrote"I'm inamiserablecondition."Thenonthe 16th,"Dr.Ainscoughtoldmeplainhe wouldnotmarrymebecauseIwasa madmanindrink;thatthewomanran herruininmarryingme.ByGod's helpIwillobservetheserules:1,Not ing;2,Notaboveapintatasittingof business;3,Aslittleaspossiblein public-houses;4,Keephomewiththe greatestdiligence."And,appropriately enough,heheardasermonon,thesame dayon"Sincerityofintentions."On the23rdofOctoberhewasabletosay, "BlessGod,I'venotspentld.inalehousethisninedays;"andonthelast dayofthemonth,"Finishedthis monthwell,beingsober,constantin duties,publicandprivate,studiousand contented."Twoyearsafterwardshe wrote."Finishedthecoronationof KingGeorgewithlyingneartwo hoursindungeonbyFiles,constableof Salford;ill-hurtoffacelosthandkerchief,andindeed,deservedallforbeing drunk-itshallbelasttimeever." However,onthefollowingdaywrote, "AsInowthink,I'llleaveoffdrink."

DIAMONDS.

Inthesummerof1876theJesuits openedachurchinSt.Giles's,Oxford, inlieuofthechapelwhichhadhitherto servedthewantsoftheCatholicsina retiredandinconvenientposition.The OxfordandCambridgeUndergraduates' JournalforJunedevotesanarticleto theestablishmentoftheSocietyof Jesusinaprominentthoroughfareof Oxford,andseverelyblamesthe Universityauthoritiesforallowing practisedRomandialecticianstoangle torimpressionableundergraduateswith impunity.TheUndergraduates'Journal isnotverycomplimentarytothe Anglicanclergyasregardstheirpowers asdisputants."Unfortunatelyforthe ChurchofEngland,"itsays,"neither ofhertwogreatschoolscommands respectwhendenouncingRomanian. FortheEvangelicals,alwaystoorampantandpopularintheirmodeof handlingcontroversialsubjects,and startingfrompranissesdeniedbytheir

Itwouldbeimpossibleforoneperson toenumerate,orbeawareof,allthe finecollectionsofdiamondsinacity likeSanFrancisco.Mrs.Leland Stanfordbecamethepossessorafew monthsagoofadiamondnecklaceof remarkablebeauty.Itwasbroughtto thiscitybyanagentofoneofthe largestjewelryhousesinNewYork City,andthepricepaidforitwas $76,000.Thegreatestvarietyoffine jewelryownedbyaprivatepersonage onthiscoast,includingbracelets,rings, medallions,&c.,isthepropertyofMrs. LloydTevis,ofthiscity,thewhole havingcostover4n00,000.Mr. Tevisisagoodjudgeofdiamonds,and isfondofbuyingthem.Mr.J.B. Hagginisknownasadiamondconnoisseur.Inhiscollectionisaruby formerlywornbyLolaMontez,which thatnotedactresssoldforafewhundred dollars.SubsetiuentlyMr.Hagen -aWertainedthatitwouldcosthim V,000or,S6,000togetitmatched inEngland.Hispredilectionforpreciousstoneshasresultedinhislady having$80,000Werthofpinsand

finejewelrytochoosefrom.Mrs. CharlesCrockerhas$100,000worth ofdiamonds,purchasedatvarious times.Someofthemaremostremarkableforbrilliancy.Mrs.CharlesMain has48.25,000worthofpreciousstones, herpreferencebeingforopals.The Orientalopalsarethebestweget. ThoseprocuredontheCentralAmericancoastarebrittle.Oneofthelatter literallyexplodedduringathunderstorminthiscityafewyearsago. ThereismorefireintheCentral Americanopals,buttheOrientalones areconsideredthebest.Mrs.Thomas Sunderlandhasadiamondcrossthatis matchleseShealsohasthefinest diamondwatchinthecityandanexquisiteassortmentofstones.Her quartzjewelrycostover$15,000. Shehasamagnificentquartzcasket thatcost510,000,andaquartzpowderboxthatcost51,500,bothof whicharenowattheParisExposition asexamplesofAmericanfineart.The entirevalueofhergemcollectionis over560,000.Mrs.Mackayisbelievedtohavethelargestandfinest sapphireintheworld.ItformerlybelongedtoaRussianPrince,fromwhom Mrs.Mackeypurchaseditfor750,000f. Itisoveraninchindiameterand withoutaflaw.Thesameladyalso hasoneofthefinestemeraldsknownto exist,andisfartherhappyinthe possessionofthefinestpearlnecklace inEurope,whichcosther500,000f. Amongothervaluablejewelryowned bytheBonanzaQueenmaybementionedapairofdiamondsolitaire earrings,valuedat22,000.Onewas boughtatthesaleoftheDukeof Brunswick'sjewels,andittookaParis jewellertwoyearstofindamatchfor it.Asetofcoral,comprisingearrings, brooch,coronet,bracelets,&c.,is3fthe mostdelicateshadeofpink,looking muchlikeopals,eachpiecebeing surroundedwithdiamonds.Itisthe finestsetofcoralintheworld,and tooktwoyearsandahalftogetthe piecestogether.Thereisonlyone likeitinexistence,whichbelongsto theQueenofPortugal.Itsvalueis 86,000fMrs.Mackayhasseveral valuedatover2,500,000f.The wealthypeopleofLosAngelesinvest alltheirpinmoneyin44iarnondsand finejewelry.Theyaregreatbuyers. Mrs.Franklin,ofSanJose,wears elegantdiamonds,anddoubtlessalarge numberoftheotherladiesofthatcity do.Thereareseveralprivatehands. HisEminence,whowasreceived withenthusiasticcheering,saidthat sincehelasthadthePleasureofbeing inthatballagreatmanythingshad happened.Firstofall,theyhadbad tolamentthelossoftheirbelovedHoly FatherPiusIX.butalmostthelast actofhislifewastobestowhisspecial benediction,withgreatspiritualindulgence,ontheLeagueoftheCrossin England(applause).Anotherevent wastheelectionoftheirHolyFather LeoXIII.,andoneofhisfirstactswas tobestowthesamebenedictionandthe samespiritualindulgencesuponthe LeagueorAssociationofTotalAbstinenceinthedioceseofFerns,athis (hisEminence's)supplicationinthe Bishopofthediocese(applause). Having,then,thebenedictionoftwo Pontiffsontheirwork,hethoughtif therewasafaintheartamongthem hemightpluckupcourageforthe future.Withthebenedictionoftwo Pontiffstheycouldnotdoubtthat theirworkwasCatholic,thatitwas recognizedbythehighestauthorityof theCatholicChurch,thatitwas foundeduponsoundCatholicprinciples;anditremainedonlywiththem tobetrueintheCatholicspiritof humilityandself-control,andofcharity toallmen,tothosewhomightnot agreewiththemordoastheydid. Iftheyonlysoacted,hedidnotknow bowtheLeagueoftheCrosscould failtoprosper.(applause).Therewere manymorethingswhichhadhappenedsincetheylastmet.Firstof all,intheDominionofCanadaa PremissiveRillhadbecomethelaw oftheland-anActbywhichtothe peopleofCanadatherehadbeengiven thelegalpowertopreventtheestablishingofplacesinwhichintoxicating drinkwassold,accordingtotheir judgment.Theythereforehadthe meansofcontrollingthatgreattraffic whichbebelievedtobethegreatand menacingdangerofourowncountry (applause).Anothereventhadalso

Thecoastalmailservicewascommencedin1873,butwassuspendedfor aperiodowingtothes.s.Georgette standingontheMurrayreef.Itwas resumedin1874.Thecontractors beingMessrs.CONNOR&MCKAYand thesubsidyfortheservice,whichincludedmailserviceatallportsfrom AlbanytoChampionBaywas£4000 perannum.Onthewholethisservice waswellperformed.Ontwoorthree occasionstheGeorgettemissedcatching thefromGallosteameratAlbany,and themailshadtolieatthelatterplace forfourweeks,butthiswasfromno defaultchargeabletothecontractorsin anyway.Theirtime-tablewasfixed bytheGovernment,andasarulewas rigidlyadheredto.TheGeorgette,in December1876,waswreckedbelow theVasse,andthusforatimethe coastalmailservicecametoanend.

Earlyin1877theservicewasreopenedbyMessrs.J.LILLY&Co., withthes.e.RobRoyonthesamesubsidy,butnotwiththesametime-table ashadbeenadoptedfortheGeorgette. PracticallymakingMessrs.LILLY& Co.mastersofthesituationfarmore thanMessrs.CONNOR&McKerhad everbeen.Messrs.LILLY&Co.professedthattheserviceandsubsidy werenotremunerative,andproposed earlyinthepresentyeartowithdraw theirsteamer.Intotheparticularsof thenegotiationswhichwereentered into,andwhichformedthebasisofarrangementsbywhichthepresentstate Y thinkitnecessarytoenter.This muchweknowthatthemailservice appearstobeconductedaltogetherat theoptionofthesubsidizedcontractors, andthatiftheauthoritieshaveany voiceinthematteritissubservientto thecontractor'sarrangements.This maysoundstrangebutitisnoless strangethantrueasweshallchew.

Evenwiththatonecanhardlysaythat hisnameisinseparablyconnected,fur Ozanam,withinnatemodesty,always insistedthathewasbutoneofa numberofyoungmentowhomtheidea ofprovingtheirfaithbytheirworks hadalmostsimultaneouslyoccur:ed. Theywereallfriends,andaccustomed tomeeteachweekintheofficeofthe TribuneCatholique,thenewspaperwe havementioned,fordebatesonmatters historical,philosophicalandreligious. ButthethoughtwasOzanam's,andit felllikeagoodseedintoheartsand mindsalreadytouchedbyhisenthusiasm.Theworkspreadwithunexampledrapidity,andwhenOzanam died,twentyyearslater,therewas, perhaps,notacountryintowhichcivilizationandCatholicityhadextended intowhichWilednotalsoforcedits beneficentway.

Yet,withallthisincessantzealfor faithandthepracticalworksoffaith, Ozanamhadalwaysthegiftofattractingandwinningeventhosewhoinsuch mattersweremostunlikehimself.The famousVictorCousin,thenMinisterof PublicInstructionunderM.Thiera, interestedhimselfmostwarmlyinhis careerwhenhisstudentdayswere ended,andofferedhimtheChairof PhilosophyatOrleans,whichhefeltobligedtodecline.M.Villemain,whosucceededM.CousinasMinister,onhearingofhisengagementinmarriage, wrotetooilerkmtheChairofForeign LiteratureintheUniversityofLyons, butheagaindeclined,inordertoaccept afarleeslucrativepositionasassistant professortothesamedepartmentatthe Sorbonne,becausebefeltthathecould servethecauseofChristianphilosophy moreefficacious)inParis.Nominally assistanttoM.Fauriel,thehealthofthe latterwassoprecariousthatalltheduties ofthepostfellon°samesshoulders, andheperformedthemwithasuccess thatwouldhaveturnedweakerheads. gorsinees.Chutininterruptedoneof hislecture,withtheexclamation: "Ozanam,howisitpossibletobeso eloquent?"andcameoutfromanother withtheremark:"Thelyceumsand collegessendusdistinguishedprofessors,buttheAbbeNoirot"(under whomOzanamhadmadeatLyonshis preliminarystudies)"sendsusmen." Themotiveofhislectureswasthat whichhadariseninhismindwhileyet aboy-toshowtheworkofProvidence inhistoryandliterature-gotracethe influenceofreligion,firstinitsprimitive formasitemergedfrointhearkwhich alonesurvivedthedeluge-then Jewish-thenChristianandCatholic. Alifetime,evenbaditbeenfarmore prolongedthanOzanam's,wouldnot havesufficedtoelaborateaschemeso vast,andOzanamdiedatforty.He badsucceededtotheChairof ForeignLiteratureattheSorbonne onM.Fauriel'sdeathin1844,when hewasonlythirty-twoyearsold-the youngestprofessorwhomtheUniversityhadeverseen.Eightyears laterhewasdyingofexhaustion, havingcompletedvariousfragmentsof thegreatworkhehadcontemplated, oneofwhichhis"HistoryofCivilizationintheFifthCentury,"was crownedbytheAcademytheyearafter hisdeathasthefinestliteraryworkof theyear.Hispublishedworksfill elevenvolumes,andcompriseamong otherthingsanelaboratestudyof Dante,or"CatholicPhilosophyinthe ThirteenthCentury;"twovolumesof Germanstudiesentitled"TheCondition oftheGermansbeforeChristianity," and"CivilizationamongtheFranks," andthe"HistoryofCivilizationinthe FifthCentury."

Ozanam'slifeisonewhichwecommendheartilytothestudyofour Catholicyoungmen,andespeciallyto thoseofthemwhoarepreparingforthe liberalprofessions.Whetheranincitement,toeffort,oraspurtogenerous enthusiasm,orareminderofwhatGod andtheChurchexpectfromthoseto whomaregiventhefivetalentsof naturalabilityandaliberaltraining,we knowofnomoreelevatingmodelwithin thiscentury.TheCatholicPublication Society,sdichreprintsAlissO'Meara's admirablebiography,doesso,wehear, attherequestoftheNewYorkConferencesofS.VincentdoPaul.The bookserves,then,adoublepurpose-it isnotoftenthatonecanreapsospeedily andsensiblyahundredfoldfromagood deedaswhenbeaddstotheresources ofa'greatcharityby'purchasingso manyhoursofpurepleasureasthe readingofthislifemustaffordtocultivatedmindsandgeneroushearts.

Miracles.

miracles,iftheywerepossibleduring fourthousandyearsbeforetheApostolic age,astheyundeniablywere,shouldbe impoisiblenow.Theyhave,however, nobusinesstochargeusCatholicswith "superstition"and"imposture"asif weweretheonlypeoplewhoeverbelievedinmiracles,when,aswehave justseen,itwasonlyaftertheyhad learnedbyexperiencethattheCatholic religionwastheonlyoneinwhich miracleseveroccurredthattheyceased tobelieveinthemthemselves.Ifthe beliefthatscrofulawascurablebythe King'stouchoriginatedintimeswhen thesovereignsofEnglandwereCatholics,itcertainlycontinuedforagood longtimeaftertheyhadbecomeProtestants.Hence,ifabeliefinmiraclesbe superstitionandimposture,itisa superstitionandimposturewhichthe Reformationpeopletookagoodlong timetoceasetobelievein.

Theaboveremarkshavebeensuggestedbythefollowingparagraphwhich appearedintheObserver-"specially sentus"ofcourse-intheLondon letterofthe"absentcoadjutor":-

IamverysurprisedtofindtheTimes givingcurrencytothefollowingabsurd story,anditsplacingrelianceonanobscureJaffnalocalprint.Initsissueof the21stundertheheadingof"News fromIndia"itprintsasfollows:-A correspondentsendstotheJaffna CatholicGuardian(Ceylon)thefollowingaccountofamiraclewhichoccurred thereonthe4thinst.,ontheoccasion oftheFeastofSt.Sebastine,whichis deservingofnotice:-"Adeafmute, bornofnon-CatholicparentsatMannepay,acloserelativeoftheKachcheri Shroffandabouttwelveyearsofage, afterhavingbeenallowedtoremainfor acoupleofhourstiedtothecross erectedinfrontofthecelebratedshrine, wasabletohearandrepeatthe words"father,""mother,"&c.,forthe firsttimeinherlife.Theparentsof thegirl,overjoyedbythecircumstances, beggedtheRev.FatherGbilinitoadministertoherthesacramentof baptism,whichwasperformedinthe mostimposingmanner.Irelatethe factasIsawitletscepticsandscoffers saywhattheylike,thereisnodenying afactattestedbyhundredsofeyesand ears."HowtheTimescouldinsertthis cock-and-bullstoryIcannotconceive. Inthefirstplace,isitlikelythatnonCatholicparentswouldpermittheir childtobe"tiedup"toacrosslortwo hours?Stilllessprobableisitthat,if therewerenopre-arrangedtrickery, clevershrewdmenliketheRoman CatholicMissionarieswouldexpose themselvestothealmostcertainchance offailure.

Erasmuslongagoreproachedthe pretendedReformerswiththeirbeing unableeventocurelamehorsestoprove theircommissiontoestablishanewreligion,andasthetauntwasastrueas itwaswitty,itisnotsurprisingthat Protestantsshouldgetveryangryevery timethetruthoftheCatholicreligion isattestedbyasupernaturalevent.Itis verytruethatJohnWesleydidprofess tohaveoncemiraculouslycuredahorse ofthetoothache,though,liketherestof thenewfashionedgospelers,hewasunabletogothelengthofcuringoneof lameness.Itisalsoanundeniablefact thattheAnglicanBookofCommon Prayeroncecontainedaspecialservice, withaproperepistleandgospel,forthe miraculouscureofScrofula,which diseaseobtaineditsEnglishnameof "theKing'sEvil"fromitsbeingsupposedtobecurablebytheKing'stouch. SincetheaccessionoftheHouseof Hanover,theservicealludedtohas misteriouslydisappeared,butasithas neverbeensuppressedbyauthorityof Parliament,itlegallystillformsanintegralpartoftheBookofCommon Prayer,notwithstandingitshaving beingslylyabolished,anditwasinuse nolongeragothanthereignofQueen Anne,thelastoftheSwarth.Protestantshaving,however,learnedbyexperiencethatheresyisneverattested bymiracles,nowdenythemtobe possible,buttheyhaveneverbeenable togiveanysatitifaetoryreasonwhy

Theother"coadjutor,"inafootnote totheabove,saysthat"theTimesof courseinsertedtheparagraphasan illustrationofcombinedimpostureand superstition,"andthat"BishopBonjeanisresponsibleforthedisgracethus reflectedonChristianity."ThesuppositionrespectingtheTimesisentirely gratuitous,astheTimesdidnotsay withwhatmotiveheinsertedthe paragraph.Ifwedonotmistake,we readthesamestoryinarssovesland summaryoftheObserveritself,though the"absentcoadjutor"doesnot appeartohaveseenit,andiftheother "coadjutor"reallythinksitadisgracetoChristianity,whydoeshe, whileprofessingtobesogoodaChristianhimself,nowhelptocirculateit, whetherhedidsobeforeornot,aswe arealmostsurehedid?Isthisnotan acknowledgementthathishatredofthe Catholicreligionexceedshisloveof whateverhemaymeanbyChristianity? Hadtherelativesofthegirlbeen Catholics,ofcourseitwouldhavebeen saidthattheyhadenteredintoasecret conspiracywith"priestcraft"forthe purposeofdeceivingthepublic,butas itwouldhardlybecrediblethat ProtestantsorInfidelsshoulddoso, thereisnothingforitbuttodenythe factaltogether,thoughitissaidtobe capableofbeingattestedbyhundreds ofwitnesses.Thegroundsonwhichit isdeniedare,however,scarcelyless absurdthanthesuppositionthatProtestantsorInfidelswouldbeguiltyof animposturefavourabletotheCatholic religion-namely,thatnon-Catholics wouldnothaverecoursetoCatholic devotionsfortheptirposeofattaininga

divinefavor,andthatCatholicmissionarieswouldbetoocunningtoexposethemselvestotheriskofafailure. ItdoesnotappearthatCatholicmissionarieshadanythingtodowiththe matteruntilaftertheallegedcurehad Seeneffected,buteveniftheyhad,they wouldhavebeennonetheworseofa failure,asitwouldnomoreprovethe Catholicreligiontobefalsethanasick person'sdyingafterprayershadbeen saidforhisrecoverywouldproveall prayertoheadelusion.Asforthe improbabilityofnon-Catholicshaving recoursetoCatholicdevotions,nobody needgooutofColombotolearnthat non-Catholicsalmosteverydaylight candlesandmakevowsinSt.Anthony's ChurchatSeaStreet.Thefactisthat non-Catholicnatives,whethertheyprofesstobeProtestantsorBudhistsor Gentoos,havenorealfaithinany devotionexcepttheCatholicreligion anddevilworship;andiftheycommonlyhaverecoursetothelatterbefore tryingtheformer,itisnotbecausethey believethepowerofthetrueGodtobe lessthanthatofthedevil,butbecause theydonotlikethetroubleofbeing sufficientlyvirtuoustomeritadivine favor,solongnstheythinktheyhave achanceofgettingwhattheywantina moreeasyway.Weknownothing aboutthereportedmiraculouscureat MannepcybeyondwhathasbeenrelatedbyourCatholicJaffnacontemporary,butitdoesnotsaymuchfor the"absentcoadjutor's"ownshrewdnessandclevernessthatheadmitted theCatholicmissionariestobe"shrewd clevermen"andforgotthattheirbeing suchwouldrenderitveryunlikelythat theyshouldpermitaCatholicpaper, knowntobeunderecclesiasticalcontrol,tocirculateastorythatwouldbe soeasilyexposedifitwereafalsehood. Shouldtheallegedmiracleturaoutto beanimpostureitwilldousnoharm, becauseitwasnotCatholicsthatwere guiltyofdeceit,ifdeceittherewas butitisterriblydamagingtothe missionariesofthesectsifitistrue,becauseitwouldinthatcasebenothing lessthanadivineattestationofthe truthofthereligionwhichtheymakeit theirchiefbusinesstorevileand blaspheme.Thathundredsofwitnesses shouldbedeceivedastowhatthey themselvesbadseenandheardwould beagreatermiraclethanthealleged miracleitself,andwhetherthegirlsaid tohavebeenadeafmuteuntilshewas twelveyearsofage,wasreallyso, couldeasilybeascertainedbeyondthe possibilityofdoubt,becausetheremust beplentyofpersonswhohaveknown herfromherinfancy.Itis,however, soimprobablethatherparents,not beingCatholicsthemselves,shouldbe guiltyofanimpostureinordertofavor areligiontowhichtheydidnotbelong, thattheinvestigationwouldbescarcely worththetroubleifitsobjectswereto provethestorytoboafalsehood. Thereisnoriskindenyingthetruthof thestory,andanyfoolcandoit,buta meredenialisnoargument,andwhy doesnobodyventuretoexposethe allegedimpostureifitisnotfearedthat investigationwouldonlyconfirmthe truthofthemiraculouscure?

Protestantsmaylaughatmiracles, butaretheyreallysuchunbelieversin miraclesastheyfancythemselvesto be?Wearenotreasoningforthe edificationofsuchpeopleasthe"coadjutors,"becausewearenotsuchfoolsas tobelieveinthepossibilityofconverting hypocrites,butthereareagoodmany well-meaningpeoplewhohaveanunreasonableobjectiontomiracleswhile theybelieveinthemthemselvesallthe time.Someofourreadersmayrecollectourusingthefollowingarguments before,butthereisnoharminrepeatingthem.Unbelieversinanyreligion mayconstantlylaughatmiracles,but Protestantscannotdosowhilethey continuetopracticeanykindofworshipthemselves.Protestantministers praypubliclyfortherecoveryofsick membersoftheircongregationwhenrequestedtodoso.Theyalsoprayfor rainintimesofdrought,forfair weatherwhentheharvestsareendangeredbyexcessiverain,andforthe, abetmentcfsicknessintimesofpestilence.Therearespecialprayersinthe AnglicanBookofCommonPrayerfor alltheseoccasions.Nowwhatelse

woulditbebutamiracleifprayerwere torestoretohealthasickpersonwhose lifemedicaltreatmentcouldnotsave, orbringrainorfairweathertosavethe crops,orcauseapestilencetocease? Protestantsalsopraywhentheyarein astormatsea,andiftheyaresaved fromdrowning,theyseeno"superstition"or"imposture"inattributing theirsafetytotheirprayersyetitis certainthatitwouldhenothingelse butamiracleifprayerweretocalmor bringanothershiptotherescueofthose onboardofoneindistress.Wewereonce inthecompanyofalotofplanterswho were,asusual,complainingaboutthe weather,andaProtestantministerwho waspresentsaid"Ifyouwantrainwhy don'tyouprayforit,insteadofgrumblingabouttheweather?That'safact ustheysayinAmerica.Nowwhat elsewasthisbutrecommendingpeople topraythatamiraclemightbewrought fortheirespecialconvenience? If thereisnosuperstitionorimposturein believingthatprayercanchangethe directionofthewindsandrainclouds inordertosaveaplanterorhisemployerafewdirtyrupees,where,we shouldliketoknow,isthesuperstition orimpostureinbelievingthatitmay sometimesenablethedeaftohear,the dumbtospeak,theblindtosee,orthe lametowalk.Protestants,inorderto beconsistent,shouldeitheradmitthe impossibilityofmiraclesorelsegiveup prayingaltogether,foritcannotsurely beabitmoredifficultforGodAlmighty togivesighttoablindmanthanitis torestoreadyingmantohealth.Ifa Protestantministerprayspubliclyfora sickmemberofthecongregation,and thesickpersonrecovers,thereisno harminattributinghisrecoverytothe prayersoftheministerandcongregation,butnothingisbadenoughtosay ofusforattributingtotheprayersof St.Sebastianadeafmute'sobtaining thefacultyofhearingandspeech.We arealleitherliarsorfools,just asiftheintercessionofaProtestant ministerweremoreefficaciousthanthat ofasaint,orasifGod easilyenableadeafanddumbpersonto hearandspeakasrestoretohealtha sickpersonindangerofdeath.Itis verygoodandreligioustobelievethat acurehas,byaspecialinterpositionof Providence,beeneffectedwhenitis doubtfulwhethersuchathinghas reallytakenplaceornot,butnothing ea:iexceedthefollyorwickednessof believingorprofessingtobelievethat thesamethinghashappenedwhenit cannotbeattributedtonaturalcauses. Weoughttobelieveamiracletohave takenplacewhenitisdoubtfulwhether therehasbeenanyrealmiracleatallor not,butweareeitherfoolsorimpostersifwedonotdenytheevidenceof oursensesratherthanadmitamiracle whentherecanbenomistakeaboutits beingarealone.Cananythingbe moreillogicalorabsurd? Ofcourse wedonotexpectpeopletohereasonable whoareconstantlyabusingtheir neighboursthroughthenosefornot beingbaptisedinapeculiarway,while maintainingatthesametimethatit makesnodifferencewhetherapersonis baptizedatallornot.Logicwouldbe thrownawayuponthem,butwedoask reasonablepeopletoconsiderwhether, ifitbeabsurdtosupposeitpossiblefor prayerstoenabletheblindtoseeorthe deaftohear,itbenotabsurdtoprayat all.

Nomiraclesexceptthoseinthe Biblearemattersoffaith,andthetruth orfalsehoodofothersdependsuponthe evidencebywhichtheyareattested; butthatmiracleshaveinallages, occurredcanbedeniedonlyonthe suppositionthatallthePopes.and FathersandDoctorsoftheChurch, mostofwhomweresaints,havebeenin aconspiracytodeceivemankind.Such ieindeedtheabsurdandhorriblesystem towhichthosewhodenythatmiracles haveoceurredsincetheApostolictimes areobligedtohaverecourse,butifwe. aretobelievethat,wemayaswell rejectallhumantestimonyandbelieve theBibleitselftobeaforgeryof priestcraft.-CeylonCatholicAfassesiter-
