AfairstoryfromoneoftheCanadian courtsistoldbytheTorontoGlobeAs itrens,oneofthosesharpandsarcastic lawyers,whotakeunspeakablepridein twistingawitnessintoalabyrinthof difficulties,hadoccasiontocross-examineagentlemanofsoniclittleprominence.Thesharplawyermanaged, afterskilfulmanoeuvring,sotoconfuse thewitnessthattheonlyanswer hecouldobtaintohisquestionswas,"I don'trecollect."Whenthelawyerhad thisanswerreturnedtohimascoreor orsooftimeshispatiencegaveout. APOWERFULARGUMENT.

BAFFLEDBISMARCK.

PrinceBismarckistossingonasea oftroubles.Thedissolutionwhichwas toconsolidatehispowerandtodemolish theSocialists,hasturnedout"the wrongendon."Ifthedissolution couldhavetakenplaceinstanter,whilst allpartieswereaghastattheemperor's narrowescape,allmighthavebeen well;butfeelingsofthiskindareofa transientnature,asthelateelectionsso thoroughlydemonstrated.Theministerialpresshasthroughoutattackedthe whole-Liberalpartywiththeutmost violence,andanunnecessaryamountof bitternesshasbeeneverywhereinfused intothestruggle.Theprincehasnow nochoicebuttomaketermswiththe Vatican,ifhecan;havingdonewhich, hewillfinallyrelyupontheCatholic Churchtoaidhimagainsthydraheadedsocialism,thiselementwhichhe thoughttokillbyhisbrutalandgodless persecutionoftheHolyChurch,the GovernmentofGermanybidsfairto becomeascompleteadespotismasthat ofRussiaisnow.TheCrownPrince disapprovesofthe"thorough"policy, buthisregencyhasbeenafarcethroughout.

Chieftoselectthemostdistinguished antimeritoriousmilitaryothersfor theirsinecureooloneloiesofregimentsas theyfallvacant.Thesemuchcoveted poste,towhichnodutywhateveris attached,valuefrom$1080to£2220 perannum.TheDukeofCambridge himselfalreadyheldfourofthese-those oftheGrenadierGuards,the60th Rifles,theArtilleryandtheEngineers. Thecolonelcyofthe17thLancers, worth£1850perannum,recentlyfell vacant,and,ofcourse,theCommanderin-Chiefwascalledupontofillupthe vacancy.Afterlookingdownthelist ofgenerals,andafterdulyandminutely weighingtheirseveralclaimstothis valuableandcomfortableappointment, theRoyalDukeatlengthdetermined thatnoonewassodeservingofitashimselfI Andconsequentlyinthe Gazette,afewdaysagowefendthe followingannouncement: "17th Lancers-FieldMarshal,hisRoyal HighnessGeorgeWilliamFrederick CharlesDukeof'Cambridge,K.G.,G. C.B.K.P.,G.C.M.G.,tobecolonel-inchief."Thisiscertainlytakingcare of"numberone"withavengeance lieproceedstoaskwhyagentleman whoalreadyhadfoursinecurecolonelcies,bringinghimin£5184should appointhun.telftoafifth,swellingthe amountupto£6543ayear."Inaddition,hisRoyalHighnesshas£12,000 ayear,asadescendantofGeorgeIII., with£6000ayearextraasCommanderin-Chief.Altogether(besidesbeingthe well-paidRangerofSt.James,the Green,HydeandRichmondParks), theDukeofCambridgereceivesoutof thepublictreasury£500,000ofhis father'saccumulationsasBritishPrince andHanoverianViceroy,andthesole recipienttothelargefortuneofhimby hisaunttheDuchessofGloucester."

soulswereshipwrecked,theChurch

threefatalrooksuponwhichsomany establishedreligiousordersofa*,and womenPlmotioiegtheoppositeviKassof poverty,chastitorouadobedience,inorder toshowtoallmenthat,bytheaidof thesacraments,thosevirtueswerenot beyondtheirreach.Mighthesaya wordofFatherKelly? Thosewhom headdressedcouldnotknowsomuch abouthimasonewhohadlivedinthe samehousewithhim.FatherKelly wasaprofoundGreek,Hebrew,and Latinscholar,andpossessedanintimate acquaintancewiththeFrenchand Italianlanguages.Hewasamathematician,anastronomer,waslargely versedinmechanicalscience,andwideiy anddeeplyreadineverybranchof history.Theycouldnottollbowmany hookshehadtoreadtopreparethose lecturesonTurkeyandCypruswhich hehaddelivered.Itwastrulysaidthat hismemory-wassoftaswaxtotake apdhardassteeltoretain.Howould givethemonlyoneinstanceofFather Kelly'seloquence.Yearsagotheywere inFrancetogether.FatherKellycommandedtherespectofallinthecollege, andwasselectedtopreachthepanygeric ofSt.FrancisXavier.Amore fastidiousaudiencethanthatLehadto addressitwasimpossibletofind.It wascomposedexclusivelyoftheologians -eitherprofessorsoftheologyormen studyingtheology,whosedailyoccupationitwastoexamineargumentsand tearthemtopieces.AfterFather Kellyhadpreached,theywereenthusiasticintheirpraisesofhissermon, andsaiditshouldbewritteniuletters ofgold.He(FatherO'Malley)went fromamongstthosewithwhomhehad passedthelasteightyearsbecauseit *aswrittenintheRuleofhisOrder thatitwasthedutyofaJesuittotravel overeveryportionoftheearthwhere thegloryofUodcalledhim.Itwas notthedoingofhisSuperior,butof Godandifthefarewell*waspainful, hewouldsoftenitbythehopeof meetingagain,ifnotinthisworld,in thenext.Whenreading"Fabiola" thethoughtalwaysranthroughhis mindthatshewasadearsister,whom hehopedtomeetinhisFather's houseandtothosetowhomhenow badeadieuhewouldsayhehopedto meetthemallinanotherandabetter world,wheretherewasnoparting. "THELEAGUEOFTHECROSS,"as everyone,nodoubt,isaware,isestablishedforthepromotionofTeiniserance andthesuppressionofthericeof Drunkenness.Therearefewwhoare notconvincedthatmostoftheevils whichafflictindividuals,aswellas society,canbetracedtoeverindulgence inintoxicatingdrinks,andhencethe formationofaSociety,theobjectof whichisthesuppressionoftheimmediatecauseofsuchdireevilstoindividualsandtosocietygenerally,must claimthesympathyandgoodwishesof everywell-wisherofhisspecies.The connectionbetween"drinkandcrime," hasoftenbeenforciblypointedoutby philanthropistsinthemothercountry, andanyonepossessinganyknowledge ofcolonialsociety,mustbefullyaware thatthesamecause-over-indulgence instrongdrinks-producepreciselythe sameresultsinWesternAustralia. Drinkandcrimeareeverallied,andit iswiththepraiseworthyobjectofsuppressingtheoneandlesseningtheother, that"THELEAGUEOFTHECloCais is abouttoheestablished.But,besides lesseningcrimeamongstus,theinfluenceofthe"THELEAGUEOFTHE CROSS"willprovemostbeneficentin manyotherways.Whenapeoplebecomereallysoberandtemperate,they neverfailtobecomehappyandcontented,andcontentmentandfixedness ofpurpose,arestrongincentivesto thriftandindustry.Wemightenlarge torepletion,ontheincalcuablebenefits which"THELEAGUEOFTHECEOsS," isdestinedtoconferuponthepeopleof thiscolony,butbysodoing,wewould onlybeinsistinguponwhatisadmittedto beatruism.Asarule,itmaybesaid, asoberpeoplewillbesavingandindustrious,andintheirdomesticcircles, willenjoythatpeace,happiness,and realpleasure,whichcanneverbeattainedbyanindulgenceinintoxicating drinks."THELEAGUEOFTHECROSS," hasourverybestwishes,foritssuccess; andtoitspromoters,weheartilysill sincerelytenderouracknowledgments, ASbeing,inthetruestsenseofthe word,-publiobenefactors.

WEmostcordiallyandheartilywish oarnumerousreaders,-"AHAPPY NewYEAR."Theyear1879,upon whichwehavenowentered,isfullof hopeandpromisefor'WesternAustralia. Theharvestwhichhasbeangatheredin, hasprovedanabundantone,andthe yieldofwoolwhichisnowbeingshipped, islargerthaninanypreviousyear,and tothesewemastaddtherichyieldof ourpearlfisheries.Onthewholethen, theprospectsofthecolonyarecertainly cheering,andiftothecareofakindProvidence,wemayaddtheintroductionof viesandbeneficentmeasuresbyour Governmenttheyear1879willbea remarkableoneinthehistoryof

andwidespeedfeeling,thatsomething shouldbedonetoimprovetheirmoral andmentalcondition.Itisahealthy sign,andchewsthatourpeoplearenot whollyinsensibleto.thedui&ofthe unfortueateaborigines.As,superior people,itisnotonlyourdutytointroduceamongthenativestheknowledge andadvantagesofcivilization,butitis imperativeonustoencouragethedisseminationamongthem,oftheblessings ofChristianity.Thenativesofour NorthWestCoast,ithasbeenconclusivelyshewn,arenotonlynumerous, butarealsoanintelligentandimpressionableraceofpeople,amongwhom, itisreasonabletoassume,therewould notbemuchdifficultyinspreadingthe knowledgeoftheGospel.Withthese undoubtedfactsbeforeus,wesincerely trusteveryeffortwillbemadetoinduce abandofmissionariestoundertakethe workofevangelizingthesenatives.In manypartsoftheNorthWestportion ofthiscolony,thenativeshavelittleor noknowledgeofthewhiteman,and hencethemissionarieswouldhaveevery hopesofworkingsuccessfullyamongst them.Ignorantofthevicesandvicious propensitiesofthewhiteman,the nativescouldbeeasilyimpressedwith thepurityandsimplicityofChristianity. Asapreliminarysteptotheformation ofaMission,wewouldurgeuponour belovedBishop,thedesirabilityof solicitingfromtheGovernmentagrant oflandintheNorth\Vest,wherethe Missionariesmightcommencetheir workinthefullestconfidenceoftheir laborsbeingcrownedwithsuccess. Wsaredelightedtofindthatpublic attentionisstillbeingdirectedtothe conditionofthenativesonourNorth WestCoast,andthatthereisagruwing

lard.Formorethan200years,the Irish lehavestruggledagainst demonaleducational"systems,"and wereitnotfortheenergyofherpriesthood,andtheloveofknowledgeso characteristicoftheIrishrace,Ireland would,Ktthepresenttime,le-intellectuallyconsidered-thelowestofany countryinEurope.Fortunatelyhowever, owingtothesecauses,Leland,despite thelawswhichtendedsomuchto "starveanddwarf"herintellect,the Irishpeoplecanbearfavorablecomparisonwithherinsularneighbours.From arecentgovernmentreturn,welearn thatashorttimesince,therewereno lessthan11,371candidatesforemploymentinthepublicservice,andofthis 1111,111)er,11percent.wereScotch46 percent.English,and43percent. Irish.Oftheseplaces,Scotlandgained 6percent.,England,38percent.,and Ireland,56percent.Ofevery100 Scotchcandidates,9passedofevery 100Englishcandidates,14passed,and ofevery100Irishcandidates,22passed. Thus,notwithstandingthedisathantag,esunderwhichtheIrishlalseed, theyprovedintellectually,superiorto theEnglishorScotch.TheintermediateEducationBillwillnowhowever, givefairplayandfullscopetothe geniusoftheIrishpeople,byaffording themthemeansofobtainingahigh classical,andscientificeducation. Heretofore,suchaneducationwasbeyondthemeansandreachoftheyouths ofIreland,andhoweverzealousitithe pursuitofknowledge,orhoweverpromisingayouthmighthe,hewasinvariablycompelledtocontenthimself withthecurriculumoftheNational School.WhenIIishinenhavehadthe opportunityofreceivingagoodeducation,itisnotoriousthatthoyhave alwaysshewnhowhighlytheyappreciatedit.Ineverywalkoflife,Irishmenharedistitigitishedthemselvesas Divines,Statesmen,Lawyers,Soldiers, MenofLetters,loversofScienceand Art,Irishmenhavemadeaworld-wide reputation.Undertheinfluenceofthe IntermediateEducationBill,weanticipateabrightfutureforIreland.It maybetruethatIrelandmaynothave thematerialadvantageofEngland-her manufacturesorhercommerce,-but thereiscanbenogainsayingthefact, thatshehas"mentalpowerandvigour," which,undertheIntermediateEducationBill,willhefosteredanddeveloped, andwhich,therecanbenoquestion, willnotonlytendtothebenefit,peace, andprosperityofIrelanditself,butno doubtwilleventuallyhaveabeneficient influenceontheworldatlarge.

THEpassingoftheIntermediateEducationBillbytheImperialParliament, musthavebeenasourceofsincere pleasureandgratificationtoeverytrue friendofIreland.Nocountryinthe worldhassufferedsomuchfromthe effectsofiniquitouseducationlawses Ireland,andthislastactofjusticeon thepartofthepresentMinistry,cannot failtoearnforthemthegratitudeofthe Irishpeople,asevincingbeyouddoubt, anearnestdesireontheirpart,torepairtheevilswhichhavebeensolong inflicteduponaknowledge-lovingpeople, bypreviousbigoted,intolerantandunjustCabinets.Toanyonewhohas calmlyreflecteduponthemalevolent spiritwhichactuatedtherulersofIreland,orhavecarefully-consideredthe dastardlylawswhichtheyintroduced, withaviewofpromoting(?)theeducation oftheIrishpeople,cannotbutreally wonderthattheIrishhavebeenableto maintaintheirpresenteducationalstun.

ATthepresentdate,whenourgreat nationalpridewellnighblotsoutfrom ourrecollectionthelowlyconditionin whichChristianityfoundourraceand nation,itwillnotbeamisstotake occasionallyabriefretrospectiveview oftheconditionofourforeflithersthat wemaythebettercompassionatethose onourownshores,whosemisfortune itistobesomewhatsimilarlysituated atthepresent..day.Inthiswewill followthevenerableBede'saccount:-Oneday,certainmerchant&having arrivedinRome,andhavingexposed. manythingsforsaleinthemarket!.. place,abundanceofpeoplerestored thithertolookatthemerchandiseand tobuy.Gregoryhimselfwentwith therest,and,amongotherthings,he sawthatsomeboyswereofferedfor sale,theirskinsdelicatelywhite,their countenancesbrightandcheerful,.and theirhairbeautifullyfine.HisAtka.-

YouhaveoffendedSt.Peter youhavedestroyedRome!"ThePope wasmovedbytheirclamour,and thoughtitwelltosendoffcouriersto recallSt.Gregorytohismonastery.

OenCatholicreaderswillglanceover thelistofdistinguishedEnglishconverts,giveninanothercolumn,with feelingsofjoymingledwithgratitude. IttooktheChurchthreehundred yearswithmuchbloodandpatience,to subjugateImperialRometotheStandardoftheCross:anditrequiredno lessaperiodtoachievethechangethat hasoflatecomeovertheEnglishmind. TheChurchofGODonearthismilliard. "She,"saysDr.NEWMANhasaccompaniedhumansocietythroughthe revolutionofitsgreatyear;andisnow beginningitagain.Shehaspassed throughthefullcycleofchanges,in ordertoshowusthatsheisindependent ofthemall.ShehashadtrialofEast andWest,ofmonarchyanddemocracy, ofpeaceandwar,ofimperialandof feudaltyranny,oftimesofdarknessand timesofphilosophy,ofbarbarousness andluxury,ofslavesandfreemen,of citiesandnations,ofmartsofcommerce andseatsofmanufacture,'ofoldcountriesandyoung,ofmetropolisand colonies.Shearoseinthemosthappy agewhichperhapstheworldhasever known;fortwoorthreehundred yearsshehadtofightagainstthe authorityoflaw,establishedformsof religion,militarypower,anably cementedempire,andprosperouscontentedpopulations.Andinthecourse ofthatperiod,thispoor,feeble,despised Society,wasabletodefeatitsimperial oppressor,inspiteofhisviolentefforts, againandagainexerted,toridhimself ofsodespicableanassailant.Inspite ofcalumny,inspiteofpopularoutbreaks,',inspiteofcrueltorments,the lordsoftheworldwereforced,astheir solechanceofmaintainingtheirempire, tocometotermswiththatbody,of whichthepresentChurchisinname, inline,indoctrine,inprinciples,in mannerofbeing,inmoralcharacteristics, thedescendantandrepresentative.They wereforcedtohumblethemselvesto her,andtoenterherpale,andtoexalt

her,andtodepressherenemies.Sh triumphedasneveranyothertriumphed beforeorsince.

Thereareinthislistnamesofnote, wholikeDr.NEWMANwereendowed withgreatintellectualforcethatonly theChurchofGODcouldmaster. Buttheyweretruemenwhopreferred truthtoallthegloryoftheearth.They fi,ughtwiththeChurchuntilovercome byherirrestibleforce,whentheybecamehermostdevotedandlovingsubjects.Thereareamongstthemthose towhomDr.NEWMANappealedsome 30yearsago,withsuchpowerofreasoningasfewcouldsurpass,andwith aninfluencewhichnoneothercould claim.

"True,"saidhe,"thereisoneclass ofpersonstowhomwemightseemtobe sentmorethantoothers,towhomwe couldnaturallyaddressourselves,and onwhoseattentionwehaveasortof claim.HowcanIfitlybringthese remarkstoanendwithoutreferringto them?Therearethose,Isay,who, likeourselves,wereintime,past graduallyledonstepbystep,tilwith ustheystoodonthethresholdofthe Church.Theyfeltwithusthatthe CatholicReligionwasdifferentfrom anythingelseintheworld;andthough itisdifficulttosaywhatmoretheyfelt incommon,(fornotwopersonsexactly feltalike,)yettheyfelttheyhadsomethingtolearn,theircoursewasnot cleartothem,andtheywishedtofind outGod'swill.Now,whatmight havebeenexpectedofsuchpersons, whatwasnaturalinthem,when theyheardthattheirownfriends,with whomtheyhadsympathizedsofully, hadgoneforward,underasenseof duty,tojointheCatholicChurch? Surelyitwasnatural,-Iwillnotsay, thattheyshouldatoncefollowthem, (fortheyhadauthorityalsoontheside ofremaining,)-butatleastitwas natural,thattheyshouldweighthe matterwell,andlistenwithinterestto whattheirfriendsmighthavetotell them.Didtheydothisinfact?alas, theydidjustthecontrary: theysaid, "Sinceourcomandoctrinesand principleshaveledyouforward,for thatveryreasonwewillgobackward; themorewehavehithertoagreedwith you,thelesscanwenowbeinfluenced byyou.Becauseyouhavegone, thereforewemakeupourmindsonce foralltoremain.Yourargumentsare clearlyatemptation,becausewecanuot answerthem.Wewillturnawayour eyes,wewillchimeourears,lestwe shouldseeandheartoomuch.You :weresosinglemiudedwhenyouwere withus,thatpartyspiritmustnowbe yourmotive;sohonestinyourleaving us,thatnotorietyisnowyouraim.We cannotinflictakeenermortificationon youthanbytakingnonoticeofyou whenyouspeak;wecannothavea bettertriumphoveryou,thanbykeepingothersfromyouwhentheywould addressyou.Inaword,youhave spoiledapromisingcause,andyou deserveofusnomercyI"Alas,alas letthemgoandsayallthisatthe judgmentseatofChrist!Takeitat thebestadvantage,mybrethren,and whatistheargumentbaseduponbut this,-thatallinquirymustbewrong, whichresultsinachangeofreligion? Theprocessiscondemnedbyitsissue; itisamereabsurditytogiveupthe religionofourbirth,thehomeof ouraffections,theseatofourinfluence,thewell-springofourmaintenance.ItwasanabsurdityinSt. PaultobecomeaChristian;itwitsan absurdityinhimtoweepoverhie brethernwhocouldnotlistentohim. Iseenow,Inevercouldunderstand before,whyitwastheJewshugged themselvesintheirJudiaism,andwere proofagainstpersuasion.Invaintime Apostlesinsisted,"Yourreligionleads toours.andoursisafactbeforeyour eyes;whywaitforwhatisalready present,asifitwerestilltocome?do youconsideryourChurchperfect?do youprofesstohaveattained?whynot turnatleastyourthoughtstoChristianity?""No,"saidthey,"wewill live,wewilldie,wherewewereborn; thereligionofourancestors,thereligionofournationistheonlytruth; itmustbesafenottomove.Wewill notunchurchourselves,wewillnotdemandfromourpretensiousfiwewill

Wehavestudiedthelifeofourillustrirushero,asastudent,asRectorof theIrishCollegeinRome,asArchbishopofArmagh,andthenofDublin: letuscontemplatehimnowasaPrince oftheChurchandacounsellorofthe Pope.Whenthenewsoftheelevation oftheArchbishopofDublintothe Romanpurplebecamepublic,itwasa sourceofuniversaljoy.Throughout theEternalCityallthepublicestablishments,thepalacesofthenobilityand foreignambassadors,weresplendidly butthestudentsofthe Propagandaaboveallfeltproudand happy,hebeingthefirststudentofthat institutionyetraisedtothatexalted dignity.Butwhocoulddescribethe enthusiasmwithwhichhisEminence wasreceivedinIrelandonhisreturn fromRome?Theclergyofthediocese, theChristianBrothers,theunitedconfraternities,thestudentsofSt.Patrick's College,Maynootb,receivedhimin triumph,andpresentedhimwithaddresses,towhichhegaveadmirable replies.Thousandsuponthousandsof peoplekneltdownoneachsideofthe road.toreceivehisblessing,ashepassed by.Neverwassuchascenewitnessed before,andlongwillitremainimpressed inthememoryofthosewhowerepresentatit.Oneofthefirstactsofhis EminencewastoobtainfromtheHoly SeethatthefeastsoftheIrishsaints recognizedbytheChurch,whichupto histimehadbeenkeptonlyinpttrticu-

orplaces,becelebratedandinsertedin thecalenderofeverydioceseofthe EmeraldIsle. Itistimenowtomentionthearduous laboursofthisgreatchampionofthe faithinthecauseofCatholiceducation. HisEminence,tousehisownwords, inhisaddresstotheclergyofDublin, etameetingheldatMarlborough-street, onthe18thDec.,1867,said,"thatthe greatesteffortsweremadeforthepurposeofdestroyingtheinfluenceofthe CatholicChurch,bymakingeducation aStateengineforthepropagationof errorandthesuppressionoftruth." Heknew,ashethenstake],thatin Russiaschoolsandschool-bookswere employedtocompelCatholicPolandto embraceafatalschism,rindtoacknowledgetiresupremacyoftheCzarinreligiousmattersthatinGermanymost childrencouldnotacquiresecular knowledgewithoutimbibingthebanefulteachingsofRationalism;thatin Belgium,theSolidaires,abranchof Freemasonary,supportedschoolswitha viewofpromotinginfidelity;thatin Switzerland,theSupremeCouncilof Bernehadtakenawaythechargeof schoolsfromallteachersbelongingto religiouscongregationsinfine,that tirepowersoftheworldweresystematicallytryingtodoawaywithreligion altogether,underminingthefoundations ofsociety,andpreparingthewayfor anarchyandrevolution,Seeinghis owncountrymenacedwiththesame evils,hisEminencemadeaceaseless waragainstthegodlessschoolsofIreland.Heconceivedandsuccessfully acomplishedthefoundationofaCatholic Universityfortheeducationofthe youthofCatholicIreland.Heencouragedreligiuusordersofeverykind todirectschools,orphanages,and collegesinvariouspartsofthearchdiocese.Ilerequestedhisclergyto warnChristianfathersandmothersnot toallowthemselvestoberobbedoftheir parentalrightsovertheeducationsof theirchildren,andnevertosendthem toStateschools,inwhichallCatholic books,emblems,andprayers,eventhe signofthecross,arebanishedinsclasshoursandstrictlyprohibited,witha viewtokeepCatholicchildrenfrom gettingafullknowledgeoftheirreligion. Hemaintained"thatagovernment consistingofmenofeveryreligion,and generallyhostiletotheCatholicChurch, cannotbeasafeguideforCatholicsin educationalmatters."Heaffirmed "thatCatholicparents,whosendtheir childrentogodlessschoolscannotbefree fromblame,andthatnomeretemporal considerationscouldjustifythemin thrustingtheirlittleonesintothe furnaceofdanger,andexposingtheir immortalsoulstotheriskofeternal perdition.Parents"headded"who immolatetoMoloch,notthebodies, liketheJews,butthesoulsoftheir children,andexposethemtolosetheir faithareunworthyofthefavorsand sacramentsoftheChurch."Wehave spokenofthenationalSynodofThurles; itsimportancecanscarcelybemagnifiedstillwebelievethatitcannotbe comparedtotheSynodofMaynooth, heldunderthepresidencyofhis Eminence,andofwhichhewasthe verysoul.IutheSynodofMaynooth, heldfromthe30thofAugusttothe 22ndofSeptember,1873,besidesthe questionofCatholiceducation,many othervitalsubjectswerecarefullyexaminedandeffectivemeasurestakento preservethepurityoffaithandmorals. Afewwordsfromthepastoraladdress issuedonthatoc,caasionbythearchbishopsandbishopsofIreland,will enableyoutoappreciatetheimportance ofthismemorablecouncil.

Ofalltheseadmirablemeasures CardinalCullenwastheprincipalpromoter,andweshallneverbeableto testifyadequatelyourgratitudeforthe goodhehastherebydone,notonlyto Irelaud,buttoaliCatholiccountriesin general.CardinalCullenwaspresent attheVaticanCouncil,inwhichhetook averyactivepart.Hisvasterudition, hiswonderfulknowledgeofdogmatic andmoraltheology,hisexperienceof menandthingsconnectedwiththe ChurcIi,gavehimauimmenseinfluence; everywordheutteredwaslistenedto withgreatestattention.Inmostquestionsprevailed,andhisviewswereunanimouslyadopted.

Butthereisanothertraitofhislife, whichwereItoomit,youwouldfind itveryhardtoforgiveme.Itisthis -NexttoAlmightyGod,itistohis kindnessandtohischarityweareindebtedfortheprogressofreligionin Australia.ThemajorityoftheAustralianbishopswere,onhisrepresentation,appointedbytheHolySee.A greatnumberofprelateswhosescience, zeal,andpietyweeverydayadmire, wereeducatedinsomeofthecolleges andseminariesplacedunderhishigh patronage,andsentherewithhisapprobation.Hehasalsogiveusyour belovedBishop,Dr.Murray.But thereissomethingelseImusttellyou, attheriskofbeingcensuredforitDr. Murraywasthefavoritefriendofhis Eminence,and-forverymanyyears heactedashisprivatesecretary.Must webesurprisedthen,tofindinthe disciplesomanytraitsofresemblance withhisillustriousmaster?Bythis morning'spaper,weareinformedthat animmenseconcourseofpeopleattended thefuneralofCardinalCullen,andthat nolessthantwenty-sixbishopsand759 clergymenwerepresentathisobsequies. Thisshowshowuniversallyhewas lovedandesteemed,andhowmuchwe shouldlamenthisbeingsosuddenly takenawayfromus.Thedeathof CardinalCullenisanimmenselossto Ireland,animmenselosstous,andto thewholeCatholicChurch.Hewasa faithfulpriest,raisedbyGodinour daystostemthetorrentofinfidelity thatinundatestheworld.Hewasa modelpriest,afaithfulservantof Christ,amanaccordingtoHisheart, and,thoughiuhishumilityhewould neverhaveacknowledgedit,yetallwho knewhimlookeduponhimasasaint. WearefaintobelieveheisnowwithGod,andthatfromhisheavenlythrone helooksdownuponusto-day,andstill continuetoprotectus,evenmoreeffectuallythanHedidinthisworld.In anycaseitisourdutyofgratitudenot toforgethiminourprayers,thatifhe werekeptforawhileawayfromhie Lord,webyourunitedferventsupplicationsmayshortenthedaysofhis purification,andadvancetheenjoyment oftherewurilhehassowelldeserved byhissaintlylife.Astomyself,my brethren,Ifeelmoreinclinedtoclaim. hisintercessionthantoofferupprayers forhissoul,whichIbelievetobeat rest.ButofonethingIamcertain, andthatis,thatwheneverhewillbein Paradisehewillnotforgetus,but stretchforthtousahelpinghandto assistusinreachingoureternalhome, thatwemaysingwithhimforeverthe praiseoftheLord.Amen."

Secondly.Theystigmatizeddangerousamusementsintheatresandelsewhere,andimproperdancesimported fromabroad,totheincalculabledetrimeatofdecency.

Thirdly.Theyprotestedagainstthe usurpationoftheStateandthe interferenceofevilrulersinpurely religiousmatters,anddeniedthat statesmenhadarighttomakelaws thatstrikeattheChurch'sverylife, onthegroundthatoftheStatebelongs thecontrolofthewholeexternalorder

Manyillustriousecclesiasticshave beenrecentlytakenaway,butnose moreremarkablethanCardinalCotten.
