SUNDAYCLosract.

Itisnearlyeightyearssincethe MostRev.Dr.M'Evilly,LordBishop ofGalway,impresseduponthepeople ofthedioceseand,ofthedioceseof KilusacdusghandKilfbaora,ofwhich hisLordshipisApostolicAdministrator, theproprietyofclosingpublichouseson SundaysandhisLordshipwasalmost implicitlyobeyed.Sincethattime nearlyalltherespectabletradersin Galway,inGort,inOughterard,in Ennistymon,inKinvarra,andallthe largetownsinthediocesesmentioned, havekepttheirestablishment,closedon Sundays.Hencethelawmakesvery littledifferenceinthispartofIreland. Two,oratmostthree,obscurepublic houseswerekeptopenonSundayin Galway,andthesewerefrequentedby astragglinglotofpersons.Itisa remarkablethingaboutGalwaythat whenthebillforSundayclosingwas beforeParliamentapetitionwassetts forwardfromthevintnersofGalwayin favourofthatmeasure.Thereare about120public-house-keepersinthe countyofthetownofGalway,andover 100signedthepetitionsomeofthe otherswereabsentatthetime.But, asIhavesaid,nearlyallobeyedthe LordBishop,sothatvirtually.heopera- tionoftheSundayclosingActwill makeverylittlechangeintheCityof theTribes.

DR.O'LEARY,M.P.,ONTHEEFFECTS OFALCOHOL.

Dr.O'LearyM.P..lecturingin Dublinsaidthatallalcohol,allliquor infactiuwhichalcoholisfoundwhiskey,ale,porter,andwine,when takenintothemouthandswallowed, mustpassthroughoneorganofthe bodybeforeitproducesitseffects,and thatistheliver.Thealcoholiscarried throughtheliverandpassesstraight intotherightsideoftheheartwithina veryfewminutesfromthetimeitis swallowed.Theliverbecomesoverworked-itwasstimulatedbydrinkto overwork-therewasanincreased 'amountofblooddeterminedtoit,and theliverbecomeshard.Itassumeda fhrtnwhichwassometimesdescribedas ahob-nailedliver-indeedifmenonly knewthenamesthed,ctorsappliedto liversofdrunkardstheywouldbe, indeed,ashamedofthemselves.Dropsy ensuedinanimmensenun-the,ofcases, anddropsyinitsmostdisgustingform. Therewasnotalargehospitalthat couldnotsupplyatleastthreesuch cases.Eighty-eightcasesoutofevery 100ofthekindweretheresultdirectly oftheuseofalcohol.Fattydegeneration,too,wasoneofthechildrenofthe abuseofalcohol.Wheneveralcohol goesintheheartissuretogetsomeof it.Nohospitalsurgeonwhohadbeen inpracticeinDublinforthepastfifteen orsixteenyearscouldhavefailedto noticethegrowingofaverysingular conditionofthingsinconnectionwitha particularclassofdisease.Hebadin St.Vincent'sHospitaloccasionto observeaclassofnervousdiseasesin youngchildrenwhichcouldnotbe attributedtoanycausesavetheintemperanceoftheirparents.Hewas almostappalledatwhatseemedlikely tobecomingastheresultofintemperance;hewasappalledtothinkthat iftherewasthesameprogressmadein thisclassofdisease,infiftyyearsthere wouldnotbeasoldierlefttofightfor thedefenceofhiscountry-therewould notbeamanwiththespiritofasoldier, norwithanarmofpower.Itwasa

veryremarkablefactthatdelirium tremenswasunquestionablyincreasing. Thatwasadreadfulstateofthings, andhemadethisstatementasahospital surgeon,thatis/et-Iontremens,andthe resultsaccompanyingit,bothimmediate andremote,wereaeproductiveofprematuredeathastyphoidfeverinthe cityofDublin.Itwasaterriblething tothinkoftheamountofinjurymendid tochildrenyetunbornbytheviceof excessivedrinking,andthequestion wasoneofgreatpoliticalmoment.Dr. O'Learyfurtherpointedoutthe enormousnumberofcasesoflunacy thatresultedfromtheabuseofalcohol. Hehimselfcouldrememberthenames of37caseswhichhesenttolunatic asylums,everyoneofthemsnatchedout ofdeliriumtremens-thelifesaved-the animallifesaved-bytheintellect,the intelligentsoul,ifhemightusethe phrase,havinggoneintoanothersphere altogether.Inthehospitalsto-day wouldbefound40percent.ofthecases supportedoutofthepublicfunds sufferingfromtheabuseofalcohol,or fromtheindirectresultofit.

AMERICA,

DEADONTHEFIELDOFHONOUR.

FromweektoweekthePilothas exerteditselftoascertaintheworkof theChurchinthefever-infecteddistricts oftheSouth.Astheforceofthe plaguehasnowwell-nighspentitself, wepresenttoourreadersthetotal numberofthosepriestsandnunswho havegiventheirlivesintheireffortsto relievethesufferingsoftheunfortunate victimstothisterriblescourge.The DioceseofNewOrleansalonelostits Vicar-General,1.5priestsand19 sisters;thatofNatchez,including Vicksburg,6priests,5sisters;thatof Nashville,9priests,3sistersthatof Mobile,1priest,1sister;makinga totalof32priestsand28nunswho havefallenvictimstoyellowfeverin thedischargeoftheirduties.The CatholicReliefAssociationhasgiven aidalreadytotheamountof86,000 dollarsfromtotalreceiptsof90,000 dollars.Thisamount,however,byno meansrepresentsthewholeofthe CatholiccharitytowardstheSouth.In everytownandcitywheresubscriptions weretakentheCatholicbusinessmen subscribedindividually,andthemoney passedthroughtheofficialchannels. But,asitstands,theaboverecordis oneinwhichwemayjustlytake pride.

BISHOPROSENCRANS.

AgaintheChurchiscalledtomourn thelossofoneofhermostworthy prelates.OnSaturdayBishopRosenCranshadthehappinessofseeingthe greatworkofhislife,thusfar,completed;hiscathedral,whichhehad erectedatColumbusatthecostof 300,000dols.,wasconsecratedinthe presenceoftheVenerableArchbishop oftheProvince,severalprelates,anda vastconcourseofclergyandlaity.On thefollowingMondayBishopRosencranswasdead.Hehadseenthe travailofhissoul,andwassatisfied; buthisdiocese,aswellastheChurch atlarge,hassustainedagreatlossin thedeathofabishopwhowasstillso young,butsogifted,zealous,devoted, andpopular-belovedandesteemedeven bythoseofourseparatedbrethrenwho hadbecomeacquaintedwithhisvirtues. TwooftheseesintheUnitedStates arenowwidowed-thatofHartfordand ofColumbus.Whileofferingtoour bereavedbrethrenofthesediocesesour heartiestandmostsincerecondolences andsympathy,letuspray,withthem,

thatthenewprelateswhoshortlywill basenttothemmaypoesesstheeminent virtuesoftheirpredecessors.

HOWFASTCANYOHTHINK.

"Quickasthought"and"Quickas lightning"arecommonlyusedas synonymousexpressions.Buttheir differenceisreallygreat.Anelectric impulsetraversesawireasawaveof motionanervousimpulseproceedsby adevelopmentofchemicalchangein thenerve.Itrunsalongthenerve somewhatascombustionfollowsatrain ofgunpowder,andnotmuchifand morerapidly.Indeed,Helmholtzhas clearlydeterminedtherateofnervous propagationtobelessthanahundred feetasecond,oraboutamileaminute. Tousearudeillustration,ifarailway couldfeel,thesensereportofatrain startinginNewYorkwouldreach Albanybutlittleinadvanceofthe fastesttrainsthathavebeenrunupon theHudsonRiver-road.Evenalong coursesasshortasthenervesofthe humanbodyanappreciabletimeis requiredforthepassageofnervous impulses.

Withasimpleapparatus,Hirsch foundthatatouchuponthefacecould berecognisedandrespondedtobya pre-determinedsignaloperatedbythe hand,inone-seventhofasecond. Withasoundtest,acting,ofcourse, upontheear,theansweringsignalwas madeinone-sixthofasecond;when theeyewasaddressed,theresponse cameinone-fifthofasecond.Since thedistancestravelledbythenervous impulseswereverynearlythesamein alltheseexperiments,itisevidentthat thegreaterpartofthedifferenceof timenotedmustbechargedtothe greaterorsmallerrapidityoftheactof recognition;theentireprocessineach Casebeingthetransmissionofasensation(touch,hearing,orsight)tothe brain,itsrecognition,thewillingofthe signalagreedupon,thetransmissionof theordertothemusclesofthehand, andthemovementofthosemuscles. Thusitwouldappearthatlesstimeis requiredforrecognisingatouchthana sound,lesstimetohearthantosee. Butwhatpartofthefifth,sixth,or seventhofasecond,asthecasemight be,wasconsumedintheactof recognition?

Donderswassuccessfulinanswering thisquestionbytheuseofseveralforms ofapparatus,involvingentirelydifferent methods,yetyieldingthesameresults. Hefound,forinstance,withthe"noematachograph"thatthedoubleactof recognisingasoundandwillingthe responserequiredseventy-fivethou. sandthsofasecond.Ofthistime, fortythousandthsofasecondwererequiredforsimplerecognition,thus leavingthirty-fivethousandthsforvolition.Withthe"noernatachometer" hefoundthatthesametime,forty thousandths(orone-twenty-fifth)ofa second,wasrequiredtojudgewhich wasfirstoftwoirritantsactingonthe samesense.Aslightlylongertime wasrequiredtojudgethepriorityof signalsactingondifferentsenses,asa soundandalight.Italsotook,longer torecognisealetterbyseeingitsform thanbyhearingitssound.

Thisinamanofmiddleage.Young peoplethoughtquicker,butthe differencewasnotgreat.Inallthe experimentsthetimerequiredfora simplethoughtwasneverlessthana fortiethofasecond.Inotherwords, themindcanperformnotmorethan 2,400simpleactsaminute,1,500a minutebeingtherateforpersonsof middleage.

Fromthesefiguresitwillbeseen howabsurdaremanypopularnotionsin

regardtothefleetnessofthought.And wemayreasonably"discount"alsothe storiestoldbymensavedfromdrowning,cutdownbeforedeathbyhanging, orrescuedfromsuddenanddeadly perilfromothercauses.Igodoubta manmaythinkofavestmultitudeof experiences,goodorbad,in-afew minutes;butthatthethoughtsand emotionsof'alonglifemaysurge throughthemindduringtheseconds ofasphyxiationismanifestlyimpossible.

INDIA,

CATHOLICMISSIONSINLNDIA.

Anofficialcalendarrecentlypublished atMadrascontainsfullparticularsof theestablishmentsconnectedwiththe CatholicChurchinIndia,Ceylon, Burmah,andSiam,fromwhichit appearsthatin1877therewere23 vicarsapostolic,21bishops,1,098 priests,1,088,309professingmembers ofthevariouschurches,besides1,422 schools,containingbetweenthem51,494 pupils.ThearchbishopricofGoacontained766priests,havingundertheir chargeflockstothenumberof156,162. Thesenumberscomparewith20vicars apostolic,16bishops,790priests,having congregationsof915,590persons,and 716schools,with27,068pupils,in1866. TheJournalduCommerce_Mariamsays that ofPondicherry alonetherewere,in1866,69priests, whoseflocksnumbered112,000,and90 schoolswith1,800pupils,whilein 1877thenumbershadincreasedto85 priests,141,250personsprofessingthe CatholicFaith,and67schoolswith 4,000pupils.Ofthisnumberof CatholicsintheFrenchcolonyof Pondicherry,only3,000wereEuropeans.Ofthe85priests,25were nativesofIndia.Thenumberofadult convertsfromheathenismbaptizedin 1877was1,920,besides513children; and87Protestantsaresaidtohave beenconvertedtotheCatholicFaithin thesameperiod.Pondicherryhasfour separateordersofsisterhoods.The greaterpartofthenativesprofessing Catholicismaresaidtobedeseem.ed fromtheconvertsmadebytheJesuit missionariesoftheseventeenthand eighteenthcenturies.

GREATBRITAIN.

THECATHOLICCALINDA.R.FOR1879. TheCatholicCalendarfor187J,just issuedfromthepressbyMr.Washbourne,givesamongitsothervaried contentsacarefully-preparedanalysis ordigestofthelistofconvertsto Catholicisminthiscountry,recently publishediuthepagesoftheWhitehall. Thesummarythuspresentedtoview, thecompilerremarks,mightbeheaded, hebelieves,byamemberoftheRoyal Family,mostintimatelyrelatedtoher MostGraciousMajesty,whoseconversionforcertainreasonsitwasdeemed prudentnottopublishatthetime.The classifiedstatementthereuponsubjoined runsthus-thirteenPeers,twenty-four Peeresses,nineteensonsofPeers, twenty-eightdaughtersofPeers,thirtyfivetitledmen,seventy-eightfitted ladies,thirteenmembersandexmembersofParliament,227untitled men,299untitledladies,163clerical andsixty-fivelaymembersofthe UniversityofOxferd,110clericaland thirty-eightlaymembersoftheUniversityofCambridge,129otherergymenWhoseUniversitiesarenotitatd, threemembersofthe1:TuiyerSity'of Dublin,sixmembersoftheVirgy of ,fiyq,e London,eigptr tthe )

Army,fourtelsk oftheNavy, Ittrtr-fivemeittlersofthelegalprefemmetwenty-onemembersofthe *medicalprofession,fifty-twoliterary menandwomen,twenty-sixartists: altogether1,493,ofwhom207have takenordersintheCatholicChurch. Themerestunits,however,areinthis wayreferredto.Anexceptionalfew liketheseaffordnoadequateideaofthe realmultiplicityoftheconversionsto Catholicism.Theseconversions,itis notinanywayextravaganttosay,at oncecountnotbyfifties,butby thousands.

Thefollowingletterappearedinthe TheseofTuesday,26thNovember, 1878.

Sir,-Twoyearsandahalfagoyou allowedmetostatethatthereport whichhadappearedisyourcolumnsviz.,thatIhadsubmittedtothe CatholicChurch-wasincorrect. Willyounowpermitmetosaythat thereportwhichhaslatelyappearedin someofyourcontemporariesistrue? Aftermuchthoughtandconsideration Ihavefeltittobemydutytoleave theChurchofEngland,andIaskyou toallowmetooccupyasmallspacein yourpaperinordertogivesome reasonsforthismomentouschangein myreligiouslife.Icannototherwise reachmanywithwhomIformerly worked,ortowhomIonceministered, inanyotherway,andIshallbegrateful,sir,forthisexerciseofyourkind liberality.

Thecauseofmytakingthisimportantstepwas,sofarasIcan perceive,asimplefollowingofCatholic instincttoitslegitimateand,inmy case,logicalconclusion-ofcourseat thecallofGod.Itcertainlywasnot duetopersonalinfluence;forthough Ihaveneverwillinglylostafriend, yet,practically,Ihavenotbeenenabledtoremainonintimatetermswith anywhohaveprecededmewhither eventuallyIhavebeenled.Norhas itbeencausedbycontroversy,whichI have:studiouslyavoided.Norhasit been,saveindirectly,fromanyoutward reason.

withandminisieredwillrenounce theobedienceofalifh-timeatthesame moment,inthelikemanner,oron similargrounds,asmyself.Onthe contrary,theywillthinkme,atthe first,inconsistent,changeful,weakand wrong.ButIhavenotmademypeat changeinyouth,norprecipitately,nor inanyparticularcrisisorpanic,nor withoutdueandanxiousdeliberation. Ihavenevervacillatedinmyloyalty tillIcouldbeloyalnolonger.Ihave neverhadanythingtounlearn,but ratherhaveeveradvancedinDivine knowledge.Igavemyselftobeled, notwhitherIwould,butwhereIwas constrainedtogo.Andatlast,and afterapainfulReriodofconflict,Ihave gonefromwhenceGodhadplacedme towhitherHehasbeenpleasedtolead me. ThatBoma,thatmanyofmyold friends-asIwishstilltobeallowedto callthem-eventuallywillheledto acceptalltruthuponthetrueprinciple Idonotdoubt.Itisinevitable,ifonly theywillpersevereinusingthegrace whichtheypossess,andinfollowing thelightwithwhichtheyareblessed. Nonecanknowbetterthanmyselfwhat leadsmenonwards,whatkeepsmenin theirpositionfrombeingledtomine. Therearenumberlesssoulsinthe ChurchofEngland,bothmenand women,whohaveonlytoacceptthe trueprincipleforallthattheyalready believerightly,andrightlypractiseonafalseprinciple-inordertobe guided,asIwasguided,intoalltruth. Theyhaveonlytoexchange-though thechangeisgreat,andisnotmade withoutcost-theprincipleofprivate judgmentfortherevealedbasisoffaith, whichisauthority. Iwillnotfurthertrespassonyour patience,norwillInowenterinto detailonthedogmaticandpractical reasonswhichledmetoleavethe ChurchofEngland.Ifanyare sufficientlyinterestedtolearnwhat wasmymindonthesubjectwhen forcedtomakemyimportantdecision, theywillfindanexpressionofitinthe introductionofabookwhichbeforelong willbepublished. Theresulthasarisenmainlyfroma silent,gradual,andsteadyinnergrowth ofmanyyearsinreligion.Ihavelong held,Ihavelongtaught,nearlyevery Catholicdoctrinenotactuallydenied bytheAnglicanformularies,andhave acceptedandhelpedtorevivenearly everyCatholicpracticenotpositively forbidden.Inshort,intellectuallyand inexternals,sofarasIcouldasaloyal Englishclergyman,Ihavebelievedand actedasaCatholic.

AllthisIhaveheldanddone,asI nowperceive,onawrongpiinciple, viz.,onprivatejudgment.WhenI becameconvincedthattheright principleoffaithandpracticeinreligion wasauthority;whenIsawclearly thatitisoflessmomentwhatone believesanddoesthanwhyoneaccepts andpractises,thenIhadnochoiceas tomycourse.Theonlyspiritualbody whichIcouldrealizethatactually claimedtoteachtruthuponauthority, andthatvisiblyexercisedtheauthority whichsheclaimed,wastheChurchof Rome.ForthelasttimeIexercised myprivatejudgment,aseveryperson mustexercisethegiftofGodinsome wayandtosomeextent,andIhumbly soughtadmissionintothecommunion oftheCatholicChurch.

Bishops,8,171priests,2,378churches -alsoalesserforce,thoughlesserforce, thoughserviugfourmillionCatholics, thanourkinbeyondtheseahaveaccumulatedinthreedecades.Thereis novisiblelimittosuchgrowth.A fellingoffinemigration,theresultof commercialdepressionprincipally,may showusafewyearsofmoregradual advancement.Buttheworkwillgoon withoupause.Theinfluenceswhich havehithertorecruitedtheChurchfrom theranksofProtestantismarestilland willcontinueactive,potent,andfaithful. ThesocietywhichyieldedtousaDr. Brownson,aDr.Ives,anArchbishop Wood,anArchbishopBailey,aFather Hecker,andahostofothermenofintellectualdistinction,isaspringnotyet exhausted,andnotlikelytoarmour itselfagainstthetruth.Itisasopen asevertoattack,andtheconquests madeforitinthepastcan-besuccessfullyrepeatedinthefuture.

CEYLON.

ThepopulationoftheIslandof Ceylonis,roughlyspeaking,two millionsandahalf.Ofthese,only 250,000areChristian,andofthese 250,000,190,000areCatholics.Of theremaining55,000or60,000Protestants,only2,197attendtheservices oftheAnglicanclergymenpaidbythe Government,and803thePresbyterian churches.Fromtherevenuesofthe island,£14,000isannuallyappropriated toecclesiasticalendowments,andofthis £14,000the190,000Catholicsgetexactly£100ayearalltherestgoingto theclergyofthe2,197Anglicans, exceptasmallproportiondevotedtothe Presbyterianestablishment.

THECAUSESOFTHEREFORMATION.

ProgressoftheCatholicChurchin America.

TheCatho'icTimeswritingofthe progressoftheCatholicChurchin America,concludesaveryinteresting articlethereonasfollows:-

IfweturnourattentionfromSt. Patrick'sandglanceattheChurchat large,wefindequallyinspiringevidencesofadvancement.NewYork Cityyieldsanaverageof900adult convertseachyear.AnAmericanProtestantjournalisourauthorityforthe statementthatoneJesuitpriesthas received8,000outsidersintotheFold, ofwhomtenwereministersofvarious sects.ThelateArchbishopofBaltimore,infiveyears,confirmed2,752 convertsofAmericanbirth.The BishopofRichmondtestifiesthatthirtyfivepercentoftheCatholicsinNorth Carolinaareconverts,andinoneparish therearenobornCatholics.ALondon paperrecentlyendeavoredtocreatea sensationbypublishingalist.ofaccessionsreceivedbytheChurchinthese kingdoms.Weadmitthatthearray wasformidable;butitwouldlookinsignificantbesideasimilarreturnfrom theUnitedStates.Twenty-eightyears agotheArchbishopsnumberedsix,and theBishopstwenty-seven.Nowthere areelevenArchbishopsandfifty-six Bishops.Thatistosay,intwentyeightyearstheepiscopalstaffhas doubled.Withoutmultiplyingfigures, wemaysumupthewholechangein thatshortintervalbystatingthatthere hasbeenanincreaseof44prelates, 3,834priests,3,475churches,and477 colleges.Itisnoteasytograspina momenttheimmensityofthisbound; buttheimaginationwillbehelpedby oneortwocomparisons.GreatBritain possessesaltogether19prelates,2,157 priests,and1,348churches-inother words,littlemorethanhalfofthe

Iventuretoaskyou,sir,topublish thissimplestatement,notbecauseit containsanythingwhichisnew,but becauseIhavereasontoknowthat therearealargenumb*ofpersonsof HighChurchprinciplesintheChurch ofEnglandwhostilloccupyasimilar positiontotheonewhichIlately occupied.Therearemany,bothclergy andlaity,whobelievewhatIbelieve, andwhoactasIacted,butwhodonot yetfeelable,orfeelcalled,tomakethe momentouschangewhichIhavehad thepowergivenmetomake.And theseIknowtobethoroughlyhonest, asIwas;tobeabsolutelyconvinced oftheirposition,asIwas;tobe determinednevertoleaveit,asIwas -untilGod'sgracecallsthem,asit calledme.

IdonorexpectthatthoseIworked

FredericktheGreat,ofPrussia,who wasafar-seeingbarbarianandwho dislikedhypocrisyasmuchasheliked power,saidbrieflyofthecausesofthe Reformation:-"Ifyoureducethe causesoftheReformationtothesimple principles,youwillfindthatin Germanyitwastheworkofinterest, inEnglandthefruitoflust,inFrance theeffectofnovelty.Andallhistorians haveagreedinsayingthatHenryVIII owedhisProtestantismtoexceptionally weakviewsuponchastity.TheProtestantHeylinremarkedbluntly: "Henry,beingviolentlyhurriedby thetransportofsomeviolentaffections, andfindingthatthePopeappearedthe greatestobstacletohisdesires,extinguishedhisauthorityintherealmof England.AndsoofQueenElizabeth thesameauthorsaidascandidly,"She knewfullwellthatherlegitimacyand thePope'ssupremacycouldnotstand together,andthatshecouldnotpossibly obtaintheonewithoutdiscardingthe other."Accordingly,herMajesty remainedaProtestant.

THINGSTHATNEVERFAIL. Newinventionsmayrendertheold useless,andthemachineryofto-day maybecastintotherubbishoftomorrow,ourinstitutionsofgovernment mayfailandbereplacedbyothershistoryisfilledwithsuchillustrations. Butthereareotherthingsthatwill neverfail,andcanneversafelybediscarded;areneedednow,alwayswere andeverwillbeneeded Self-relianceandself-restraint. Industryandfrugality. Courageandpatience. Truthfulnessandhonour. Moralityandreligion. Thesearetheessentialbasesthat keeptheworldsweetandcorrectthose fermentationswhichhumanpassions generate. Uponthesequalitieswemustdepend forallthehopeofpermanentandprogressiveprosperityandhappiness.All arehomespunvirtues-virtuesspunat homeandtotheguardiansofhomes wemustlooktoseethattheyareimplantedandnourishedthere.

IsawyesterdayintheTimeswhatgaveme verygreatsatisfaction.Thereisadocument atthismomentpublishedcontainingalistof 250namesofgraduateswhohavegivenin theirmostperfectandcompleteadhesionto thewholedoctrineuponwhichtheLeague oftheCrossisfounded(applause),anddeclaretheirbeliefthattheonlyremedyfur thisprodigiousevilthroughoutourpeople isthePermissiveBill.Ithinkallthiswould haveconsoledFatherMathewonhisdeathbedifhecouldhaveforseenit.Butthisis notall.Theotherday-forIcall1864the otherday-afteralongfightyeasafteryear intheDominionofCanada,anActwas passedgiventhePermissiveBilltheprovinces ofQuebecandOntario,butinthisyeara BillwasintroducedintotheSupremeLegislatureoftheDominionofCanadaextending theprovisionsoftheArttothesevenprovinceswhichconstitutetheDominion,so thatthereisaPermissiveBillatthis1110meatontheStatutebookoftheDominionof Canadawhichhasreceivedtheassentofthe Crown,andispartoftheImperiallegislationoftheBritishEmpire(cheers).Well, IaminclinedtothinkthatthisPermissive BillinCanadaisaverygallingreptoachto ourselves.However,ithascomenearer home-almosttoourowncoasts.Mr. SullivanandtheO'ConnorDon,boreaforemostpartandintheleadincarryingthrough theHouseofCommonstheSundayClosingActforIreland(cheers),andLord (-MeganstayedinLondon,althoughhewas boundbymanyengagementstobeinDublin, totakeitthroughtheHouseofLordstoits lastreading(applause).Thereis,therefore, uponthestatutebooksofIrelandand ScotlandtheSundayClosingActs,forit needsnoprophecytosaythattherewillbe aSundayClosingActforEnglandbefore long(applause).ThatActfortheDominion ofCanadaisfarstrongerthantheSunday ClosingActsofIrelandandScotland,andit isthefirsttimethatthePermissiveprinciple hasbeenappliedtothesubjectoftheliquor traffic(applause).AsIsaidbefore,if FatherMatthewcouldhaveforeseenthose thingsofwhichIhavespoken,hewould havehadmotivesofjoyandthanksgiving whichhedidnotknow,whichhecouldonly hopefor,andintheconfidenceofhisfaith believewouldcometopass.AndnowImay saythatweourselvesmustlabourinhope, andthoughmanywillneverseeit,therelas workthatwemustdo.FatherMathewwas onceinLondon,andhefoundedinLondon notlessthanelevenbranches,ortotal abstinencesocieties.Irememberthetime whenitbecamemypastoraldutytolook intothesefactsandIfoundonlytwoof theseelevensocietiesinexistence.I rememberwhenthehorrorsofdrunkenness firstforcedthemselvesuponme,calling togetherintheschoolsattachedtoSt.Peter's Church,alargemeetingfromallpartsof Loudon.Theschool-roomwascrowdedto excess,andIaskedisthereanymanhere whotookthepledgefromFatherMathew? Therewereseventeenhandsheldup.There camevoicesimploringmetocalltogether oncemoreallthosewhobelonged;cothese associations,andtofoundoncemoresome organisationwherebyourCatholicsmightbe drawntogethertowalkinthefootstepsof FatherMathew.Irememberhowtheysaid tome"askourprieststoputthemselvesat ourheadwedesiretobeledbyour pastors,"andIpassedmywordtothemthat nightthatIwouldputmyselfattheirhead (greatcheers),andIhopeIhavekeptmy word(renewedcheers).FatherMathew's workwhichhadbeenmuchdiminished,and almostbroughttoextinction,isnowrepresentedbytheLeagueoftheCrosswithsome twenty-twobranches,spreadoverLondon, andIwillsay,Godhelpingus,willspread daily,andIamoonfidentthattheyoungmen thatIseearoundme,willtakeupthiswork andcarryiton.Iseealsoamultitudeof youngpriestsandyoungclericswhohave theirpriesthoodbeforethem.AllthoseI amconfident,withnewvigour,newresolution,willcarryontheworkoftheLeague andthatthework'wehavebegunwillnot besufferedtoslackenordecay(applause), untilthedomesticlifeofourpeopleshallbe restored,thehomesofourCatholicsshallbe holyhomes,withtheiightoffaithshining inthem(apptaise).

THElistofConvertstoCatholicism, whichhasbeenrecentlypublishedby theWhitehallReview,andwhichhas beenre-issuedinourcolumns,isat oncestrikingandinteresting.Itis striking,asmanifestingtherapidprogresswhichtheCatholicChurchhas madeandismakinginthemother country,amongallranksofsociety, andinteresting,aschewinghowthe CatholicChurchiscapableofattracting toherself,notonlythe"people" generally,butalsothoseamongthem whoaredistinguishedforparticular mentalendowmentsandspeciallybrilliant accomplishments.

Thelistofconvertswhichwehave published,giveshowever,butatitheof thenumberofthosewhohavebeen "wonover"bytheChurch.The CatholicChurchinthemothercountry hasnotonlyaddedtohernumbers, membersofthenobilityandaristocracy, butalso,thousandsofthemiddleand well-to-doclasses,Tradesmenand Mechanics,whoseworldlyposition howeverhasnotrenderedtheirnames famous,andhence,hasnotsecuredfor themaplaceinthelist'ofthe WhitehallReview.

Theremarkablereligiousmovement intheAnglicanChurchwhichbeganin 1830,andwhichiscontinuinginour day,withnotlessearnestnessand determination,iscertainly,oneofthe "signsofthetimes,"andcannotfailto arresttheattentionofthoughtfulProtestants.

TimeassociationsinspiredtheIrish withhighhopeswhentheyhailedher accessiontothethrone,ancrdespite thegloomofoneofthedarkestmoments inIrishhistory,securedherhearty welcomein1849,ontheoccasionof theQueen'sfirstvisittoIreland.We couldwish,andeveryfriendtoIreland andtheEmpiremustwish,thatthe CrownandtheCourthadbeenrendered morefamiliartotheIrishpeople;and wethinkitveryprobablethat,ifthe Royalvisitof1849hadbeenfollowed upbyamorefrequentintercourse betweentheSovereignandtheIrish subjects,muchthatwehavehadto deploreduringthelastthirtyyears wouldneverhaveoccurred.

ARCHBISHOPMACHALBATHOME.

Inaverylittleandveryancienttown inthewestofIreland,wherethetallest ofthosesculpturedmosses,admiredof antiquarians,liftsitscircledheadin thecentralmarket-place,livesand rulesaprelatewho,evenifhislifewere notremarkableinotherrespects,would benotableastheseniorarchbishopof theChurchofRome,andperhapsthe oldestmitredpriestinChristendom. "John,ArchbishopofTuam,"asDr. MacHalegreatlylovedtosignhimself insturdyprotestagainstthelawdenyingterritorialtitlesinthesekingdoms toecclesiasticsofforeigncreation,was atonetimethecontemporaryCatholic divinemostprominentlybeforethe dailymindofEnglandandnowthe summertraveller,ortouristanglersteps offtheroutetoConnemaratoseeor seekIninterviewwiththeanointed Irishchampionsopopularamongsthis countrymen,all,saveoneortwo,of whosedistinguishedcoevalfriendsor foesinastirringperiodhavepassed away;whowasWiseman'sseniorbya decade,whohasseensixsuccessive Pontiffsseatedinthechairofthe Fisherman,andwhosebirthbringsone backinanothercentury,whenGeorge III.wasstillasaneking.

ThiswassungintheKing'spresence,atLordPowerscourt's.George IV.wasdeeplyaffected,andsubsequentlypromisedtorevisitIrelandin twoyears,andifnot,hesaid,hewould recommendtohissuccessorstobecome personallyacquaintedwiththeIrish subjects,ofwhomIledeclaredhewas proud.Apublicmeetingwasimmediatelyheld,andlargesumswere subscribed-O'ConnellandtheCatholicsbeingamongstthemostliberal-to erectapalacefortheKingnear Dublin.YetGeorgeIV.,afterthe warmestdeclarationsofgratitudefor thereceptionwhichhegotfromthe CatholicsofIreland,bitterlyopposed, fornearlyeightyears,thepassingof theEmancipationAct.Thefirstvisit ofQueenVictoriatoIrelandwaspaid in1849,whenthefamine,which appearedin1845,stillraged,and starvation,fever,andcholera,had decimatedthepopulation,andwere drivingmillionsofemigrantsacrossthe seas.YetherMajestywaswelcomed withthedeepestrespectandthe warmestenthusiasm.Notlesscordial wasthereceptionaccordedtotheQueen onhertwosubsequentvisits.YetHer Majestyhasbeenabletospendonly eighteendaysinalongreignoffortyoneyearsamongsttheIrishpeople. Duringhisvisitstoandhissojourn, someyearsago,inIreland,thePrince ofWalesacquiredathoroughand familiarknowledgeofthepeople,and isamarkedfavouritewithallclasses. TheDukeofConnaught'spopularity waslatelyattestedbythespeechesand votesoftheIrishmembersonthe occasionoftheprovisionmadeby Parliamentwithaviewtothemarriage ofhisRoyalHighness. IfweexaminetheViceroyaltyofhis GracetheDukeofMarlboroughwe findmatterforequalgratification.Only twoyearsinIrelandas-Lord-Lieutenant, wefindhimfishingontheBlackwater, fetediuCork,residentformonthsin Westport,underCroaghPatrick,overlookingClewBay,inConnaught, traVersingthefourProvinces,andnow

Thefealtyofamanlikethis,whocan rememberanIrishParliamentandthe executionofEmmet,istouchingor obstinateaccordingtotheprejudiceof theobserver.HeisverycomplimentarytoMr.Butt,buthaslittlefaithin theEnglishappreciationof"justiceto Ireland;"andwithatouchofasperity remembershisappealstoLordJohn RussellandLordPalmerston,his conflictswiththeTimes,andthesad andtroublouseraofthefamine.

Dr.MacHaleisoftheoldsclool. HewasinMaynoothwhenFrench prieststaughtfromprofessorialchairs. Bedealttheproselytizerwhowouldbuy soulswithsoupmanyatrenchantblow. HewasthefriendofGregory,towhom heowedhispallium,andwhosevestmentshewears.Butanotherking reigned,andthemarchoftimebrought IrelandnearertoItaly.AttheVatican Councilonehearsthevoiceofthearchbishop.sittingnextthepatriarchsutteringaNonplacetontheInfallibility questionwithDupanloupofOrleansand thebandofInopportnnists.Onlyone otherIrishbishop,andheisnowdead (Dr.Moriarty,ofKerry),wastobe foundwiththemajority.Butoneof thefirstpulpitsinIrelandfromwhich thedogmawaspromulgatedwasinthe sanctuaryofthecathedralchurchofthe RomanCatholicseecfTuam,andthe preacherwasthearchbishop.

St.Jarlath'sisasquarebuiltmansionwithgardensattherearopening ontheelevatedcathedralgrounds,and havingforitsvis-a-visacrossthestreet, notinappropriatelycalledBishopStreet, thepalaceoftheonlyProtestantbishop inConnaught,theRightRev.Dr.Bernard,brothertothelateEarlofBandon. ProbablyattheintroductionofCanon Bourke,thePresidentofSt.Jarlath's College,whichiscontiguoustotheimmediatesupervisionofhisgrace,the visitorisreceivedbythearchbishop. Bearingtheweightofhiseighty-six years,forfifty-twoofwhichhehas bornethecrozier,withsingularalertness,nay,almostwithajauntyair,the venerableprelateadvancesandgivesa dignifiedgreeting.TheRomanCatholic usuallykneelsforabenedictionand kissestheepiscopalring.And,indeed, noman,whateverbehisfaith,need blushtokneelfortheblessingofa pastorwhoseyearsarepatriarchal,and whosefaceandformareevidencesofa lifeofinternalnobility,andthefaithfuldischargeofonerousandloftyduties. Dr.MacHaleisofmiddleheight;and evennow,whensomewhatshrunken, ampleproofremainsofthewell-knit framewhichfeltbutlittle,intheanterailwayandante-Bianconidaysinthis remotedistrict,thefatiguesofatwodayridefromthefootofcloudcapped NephintotheRoyalCollegeofGeraldineMaynooth.Hisheadisshapely

Dr.MacHaleisaninteresting speaker.Hepreachesnearlyevery Sundaymorning,oftenbothinIrishand English,tohiscongregation.His effortstokeepalivehisnativeGaelic aresentimentalintheirgallantry.His learnedleisurehasbeenoccupiedwith ametricaltranslationoftheIliad,and aversicalrenderingofMoore'smelodies intoIrish,vyinginsonorousnessand softnesswiththeoriginal.Moore manifestedhisappreciationinapublishedlettercharacteristicallywarm. Thetablesofthewell-lighteddrawingroominwhichoneisreceivednumber amongstthebooksuponthemhandsomely-boundvolumesofthepoetprelate'spatrioticdilettanteism.One notesthepresenceofaharp.

Anearlyriser,thearchbishopusually officiatesatthehighaltarofhiscathedralateighto'clock,andafterasimple breakfastdevotestheforenoontothe administrationofhislargediocese.In theearlyafternoonhereceives,and laterinthedaymaybemet,cladin theordinaryecclesiasticaldresswarn inthesecountries,walkingordriving, accompaniedbyoneofhispriests,and escortedbyamotleytroutofimportunatebeggarswhomhisbeneficence maintains.Anearlyandplaindinner isfollowedbyaneveningofseclusion, unlessonthoseoccasionswhenthe presenceofguestscallsforththegenialityofthedistinguishellhostwhoenjoysnothingbetterthanthecompanyof thatbonraconteur,FatherTomBurke, thewell-knownDominicanpreacher. Oflateyearshisgracehasrarelyexchangedvisitswithanyofthelanded gentryofhisneighborhood.The bitternessofoftrenewedelectionstrife, inwhichprieststiedpeasantshavebeen arrayedononeside,againstoldoligarchicalauthorityontheother,although allayed,hasalwaysbeentooobstinately intermittentwithinsufficientinterval foritscompletesubsidence,TheEx-

Hispresence,nay,hisname,canyet enkindleanenthusiasmamongstthe hero-worshippingIrishbeneathwhateversky,whichO'Connell'sself,inthe palmiestdaysofhisuncrownedroyalty, mightenvy.Forthepeoplehehappily unitedtheofficeofaMosesandan Aaron.Hewastheirspiritualand temporalguide.Ifintheeyesofthe Englishpublic,neverpoliticorpracticable,hecannotbedeniedwhatever meritistobefoundinfearlessnessand consistentopposition. Heisthelastofabigrace.From aRomanCatholicpointofviewhehas beenfar-seeing,iffore-sightistohe adjudgedbythesubsequentadhesionof hisoncemorecomplaisantbrotherprelatestohispolicyofhisuncompromisinghostilitytothegovernmenton theeducationquestion.Tothegovernmentclaimfortheeducationofthe childrenoftheStatehealwaysreturned anunvaryingnonpossiataus.Butinhis diocesehehasnotbeenunmindfulof educationaccordingtohismind-that impartedbymonksandnunsandin schoolsunderthemanagementofhie priests.Hisannualvisitationtothese, necessitatingjourneysofnolittle arduousnessforamanofhisyears,are somanytriumphalprogresses.Fleets ofboatsgaywithbuntingconvoyhim tostormyAchillandtodistantArran. ThefaithfulpeasantryofMayoand Galwayreceivetheirhigh-priestwith genuineheartinessalliedtoaprimitive reverence.Thesickarebroughttobe touchedbyhishands.Itisnotgiven toeverymantoseeastatueerectedto himwhilehelives,butevenasthe Atheniansofolddecreedstatuesof brasstothosedeservingwellofthe State,grataConnacia,inthewordsof theinscriptiononitspedestal,unveiled, amidstacrownofIrishnotabilities,a white-marblestatuetoitsarchbishop ontheoccasionofhisjubileeinthe episcopate.DuringtheO'Connellcentenarycelebrationthepopulaceof Dublinsingledout"TheLionofthe FoldofJude"forovationasthe bishops,homeandforeign,returned fromtheceremoniesintheirprocathedral.

OneofthelastactsofthelatePope PiuswastofiattheselectionofacoadjutormadebytheclergyofTaum.Dr. MacEvilly,thepresentBishopofGalway,butanativeofthedioceseofTnam -as,indeedarealmostallDr. MacHale'ssuffragans-hasbeenappointedtosucceedhim.Thearchbishop is,however,stillhale;andwhosoever shallcomeafterhimintheseeshallfind itslustreincreased,notdiminished, byaprelatefromwhomthosedisagreeingwithhisfaithanddifferingfromhis policytotsccelowillnotwithholdthe compliment,Integervitascelerisque psiru8.
