Thisistrueevenwhenoneofthecon. tractingpartiesisbaptizedbutnota Catholic.

Onthissubjectofthemarriageof CatholicswithProtestantsthefathers oftheAmericanChurch,incommon councilassembledatBaltimore1866, admonishtheprieststhattheyareforbiddenbythedecreeofseveralPopes toperformanysacredriteorwearany sacredvestmentatthemarriageofa CatholicandaProtestant,whichmust notbecelebratedwithinthesacred precinctsoftheChurch.Catholicsare forbiddedunderthepainofmortalsin togetmarriedbyanou-Catholic minister,andnopriestispermittedto bepresentatthemarriagesofthosewho havealreadybeenmarriedbyaProtestautpreacher,orwhointendedtobeso married.Thegreatestcurs.ithatthe no-calledReformationbroughtonthe humanracewasthedenialofthesacramentalcharacterofmatrimony.Ithas ledtothenumberlesstrainofevils whichflowfromdivorceandillicitlove.

CATHOLICEDUCATION.

TheCatholiceducationofchildren, tobesuccessful,mustbelookedafterin thehome,theschool,andthechurch. Invaintheworkoftheschoolandthe churchifthehome-trainingisneglected. Parentsowetheirchildrenlessonsof goodexample,ofcarefulinstructionin religiousknowledgeandduties.Their homeshouldbelikeasanctuary-a placeforprayer,sacredtoGodandhis worship.Whenparentsrigidlyexcludethefoul-mouthedandtheblasphemerwhentheyintroducethe customoffamilyprayer,morningand evening,andsetasideaportionofevery Sundayandholidayforthereadingof booksbearingonreligionanditsobligations,thenhomepresentsanappearance ofaChristianhome.Thecheerful mannerofthefather,thewinningpiety ofthemotherwillmaketheseexercises ofdevotionacceptableandpleasingto theirchildren.Itisbecausereligion iswithmanytheperfunctorylaborand taskofashorthourontheSunday thattheyknowlittleoftheteachingsof theirreligion,andlessofitspractice. Soontheyfallawayaltogetherfromits faithandobservances.

Indistrictsinwhichitisnotpossible tohaveaCatholicschoolCatholic parentswhohavetomakeuseofthe commonschoolsareobligedinconscience tomakesure,bywatchfulexamination andenquiry,thatnothingispermitted intheseschoolscontrarytoCatholic faithandmorals.Tosomeextentthey areprotectedinthisrightbythelaw oftheStateofNewYork,whichforbidsreligiousexercisesofanykind duringschoolhours.Asanyexercises thatmightbecarriedonbyanover'zealousteacherwouldnecessarilybe non-Catholicincharacter,Catholic parentsareboundtoguardtheirchildren fromtheeffortsofthosewould-beproselytizers.Shouldtheteachersand trusteesbedeaftomildremonstrance,

boundtohavethemuntrue a homeintheCathechism.Sundayschoolwillnotsuffice.Ashortlesson intheCathechismeachdaymaycompensateforthelossoffullreligiousinstructionintheCatholicschool.

THECOUNTALBERTDEDifUN

CountdeMun,oftheoldestandbest bloodofBretagne,proveshimself worthyofhisnobleancestry,byputtinghimselfattheheadoftheworkof aChristianorganisationoflabor.He haswealthenoughtolive,quietly,on hisownproperty-andtogotoParis, whenhewishes.Histhoughtsand desires,takeanotherdirection.He feelsthatnoblesseoblige.Histitleof BrittainNobilityheconsidersasaburden,andresponsibility,imposedonhim forthegoodofthepeople.Heisthe HeadofthemovementfortheameliorationoftheconditionoftheWorking Classes.Heisnoweaksentimentalist. Heisoneofthemostpractical,asheis oneofthecleverest,oftheNoblesof France;and,intheFrenchChambers oneofthemost'eloquent,andlearned orators.

Fourtimeshehasbeenelectedtothe FrenchChamberofDeputies.The FrenchChamberdoesnotlikehim. HeistothemanespecialtormentHe reallyrepresentsthepeoplethatsend him.ThatisnotRepublicanism-at leastnotFrenchRepublicanism.When goingthroughtheregionofPontivyfromwhichhehasbeenelected,hehas hadtheaudacitytolodge,sometimes,with theCatholicPastorsofthatregion. HeissotrueaCatholicthatallthe Catholicclergylovehim.Thepeople lovehim,too,becauseheissotrueto them.Butthisshowsundueinfluence! So,timeaftertime,accordingtothe "trueinwardness"ofFrenchRepublicanism,CountdoMunisvotedoutofthe ChamberofFrenchDeputies,aselected byundueinfluencesIItisprovedthat theCatholicclergytooknopartinhis election.ItFesnotnecessary.But thefactthatheisaCatholicoutand out-andaLegitimist,toboot,was proofenoughforFrenchRepublicans,to ostracisehimHe-is,afourthtime, declarednotelected,becauseofundue influence.Theworkingpeopleof Bretagnewillstandbyhimafifth4and toafiftiethtime.Ithasbeentakenup, byCatholicsinFrance,tomakeacontributionforhiselectionexpensesIt isnotnecessary.Itisnocallforalms. But,forthefunofthething,weproposeacontribution-ifitbeonlyfifty dollars,fromAmericanCatholicsthat canspareonedollar,withouthurting them,tobesent,withtheirnamessubscribed,andanaddressofrespect, toCountAlbertdeNun;thefriendof theworkingmen,persecutedbyFrench FALSERepublicans,fromAmericans,who areRepublicansinfact.Wewill receivesubscriptions,ofonedollaror more,withthenamegiven,tobeenrolled, tilltheendofDecember.Itisnotan alms,itisafrolicofCatholicfervor. CountdeManisagoodman.Hewill enjoytheoffering-beitbutfifty dollars-fromAmericanFreemenapplaudinghisgranddefenceofthe CatholicChurch,astheonlybasisof humansociety.Andeventhislittle, notasmoney,butashomagetoworth, may,giveaspurtosonobleasoul. THEENGLISHRITUALISTS.

TheEnglishRitualistshavegaineda signalvictoryovertheLow-Church party.Theyareflushedwithtriumph, and,likethepeopleofEphesusatthe timetheCouncildecreedtheDivine MaternityoftheBlessedVirgin,are andshoutingwithdelight. And,strangetosay,thereisthesame causeforjoy.Thedecisionofthe CourtofQueen'sBenchpermitsMr. Machonochietohaveapictureofthe MadonnaitSt.Albans.Hewas orderedmorethanayearagotoremove theobnoxiousimage,batherefused. Adecisionwasobtainedfromthe CourtofArchesforbiddinghimtohave thepictureinthechurch.Heresisted. Nowthehighestlegalofficerinthe realm,ChiefJusticeCockburnhas renderedadecisionthatthepictureof theVirginMaryisaveryappropriate decorationforaChristianchurch,and thebeautifulfaceofMarywillcontinue tolookdowninloveonthecongregationofSt.Albans.Wemayexpectto seeapictureoftheVirginandChildin everyRitualistchurchintheworldvery soon.Wepredictmanyconversions fromthis.Maryrewardsbountifully thosewhobattleforherhonour.

ENGLAND'SCOMMERCIALDIFFICULTIES. Whatevermaybethecause,thefact isapparentthatEnglandwasneverin amoredepressedconditionthanatpresent.Herfactoriesareidle,hermines closedoronlypartiallyworked,and herpeopleinastateofdistressaad destitutionthelikeofwhichhasnot occurredsincetheerasucceeding1815. Inthemanufacturingcentres,where thousandsofhandsarethrownoutof employment,themunicipalityisobliged torenderassistancetomanytokeep themfromactualstarvation,whilethe spindlesfromwhichtheyderivedtheir mainsustenanceandsupportare auctioneduffasalmostuselessmaterial. ThecollapseoftheGlasgowBank,the greatestswindleofmoderntimes, thoughithasruinedhundredsoffamilies,hasnotbeensoproductiveof miserytotheworkingclassesofBritain asthedecadenceoftheirtradeand manufactures.Asthewintersetsin emigrationorstarvationstaresthemin theface,andmanytherearewhose meanswillnotpermitasateandspeedy exitfromthehorsorswhicharedaily accumulatingaroundthem. uttermos excelledbutwasunrivalL'Butto-daytheAmericanshaveoutstrippedherinarts,inscience,and commerce,andineverythingthatconstitutesthedevelopmentofmodern civilization,theenlargementofprogress, andthereal,actual,andlivingembodimentofsocial,progressivepower. England'sdominionsaresofarextended,shehasembracedsomuchof theearth'sareainherambitiousgrasp, thatshehasbeencompelledtoannihilatethecommerceofnationsbyforce ofarmsinorderthatsheherselfmay exist.Butthesenationswhomshe hasoutragedandwronged,perceiving herweaknessandimbecility,andallayingthemselveswithapowerwhich theyknowisinimicalandantagonistic toher,hopetofindinherhumiliation andoverthrowtheprosperityandgreatnesswhichtheyformerlyenjoyed. Takeitasyouwill,deviseitasyou may,thegrumblingthunderofthe Englishworking-classes,whosecryis colossalinitsscope,thehungered appealwhichunemployedthousands dailymaketothosewhoholdthereins ofGovernment,andtheintuitiveperceptionwhicheveryEnglishmanhasof libertyandhappinesswillcompelthe peopletoriseintheirstrengthandoust frompowerthosewhograndiloquently butvainlyrepresenttheminaso-called Parliamentofthepeople.

Butthisisnottheonlydifficuly whichEnglandhastoconfront.She hasonhandawarinAfghanistanand aKaffirwar.Theformermaynot onlyentangleherinAsiaticbutin Europeancomplications,andthelatter mayprobablytestherpowerstothe uttermostextent.IftheAfghanking isbackedbyRussianbayonets,andthe SouthAfricanchiefscontinuetheirresistance,andwhiletheseeventsare becomingmatterofhistory,theMuscoviteengagestheBritonintheBosphorus, whocantellwhatspiritcananimate theBritonathome,orwhatattitude themapofEuropemayassume? WbenBritonsclamorforbreadtheirs isnoidlecry,ashasbeenprovedfrom thedaysofJackCadedowntothetime ofGeorgeIII.Takeitforallinall, nodarkercloudeverloweredover England'scommercialprospectsthanis visibleto-day.

Theaboveappealwill,wetrust, stimulatethezealofallthosewhohave atheartthetriumphofreligionandthe interestsoftheHolySee.

TheAgar-EllisCass.

Wedonotthinkmuchofthe moralityortheequitytthelawisnot synonymofeither)oftherecentjudgmentontheAgar-EllisAppeal.To beginwith,"theBench"wasnot illustrious.OneoftheJudgeswho Laveadjudicatedinthiscaseisknown toberemarkableforhavingmanyof hisjudgmentsreversed;anotheristhe youngestJudgeupontheBench; thirdisnotsuperlativelybrilliant;and afourthknowsnothingaboutreligion. Mr.JusticeJamesisthefourthJudge wereferto:andwhenwenelationthat liespokeofthe"adorationofthe Virgin,"itdoesnotseemnecessaryto qualityourremark.Asixpenny Catechismshouldhavebeenhandedup totheBench;andalittlesubsequent examinationshouldhaveensued.However,itwasbutnaturalthatthejudgmentwhichwasgivenshouldbeconsistentwithsuchjudicialinaccuracy. Wodonotthinkthatthejudgment, fromevenonepointofview,canbe regardedwithoutafeelingofcontempt. Inthefirstplace,thecalmignoringof thesacredpromiseofthehusband,as beingabsolutelywithoutlegalormoral value,doesnottendtoelevatethereputeof"thelaw,"whichhasbeen usuallysupposedtoapprovehonesty.

solowdownin.thecriminalscale'that itisnotworthevensomuchasa thought.WecanfeelfortheJudges inhavingtoadminiatersuchaJaw; but,unhappily,theydidnotfeelfor themselves.Theyseemedtothink thattobenotCatholicwasin itselfsovastaboon,thatevery correlativeinvolvementwasbutatrifle. Weareglad.toobservethatoarcontemporarytheMorningPosttakesvery muckthesameviewthatwedo;and canseenoredeemingfeatureinthe judgmentoftheCourt,andnoneinthe conductofthefather.Andthereisone pointwhichstrikesusaspeculiarly offensiveinthemoralaspectsof, equivocaljudgment.Itis feeling*ofthemother-thePri .equallyIgeeredwith herrights.SheIsnotmentionedasa persontobec3mmiserated.Shewas persuadedintoamarriage,onthe strengthofacertainpromise-without whichthemarriagecouldnothave takenplace-andthen,subsequently, sheismockedforherconfidence,and deprivedofthecareofherchildren. Shecouldnot,evenifshewould,have marriedMr.Egar-Ellis,exceptonone absolutecondition;andshewouldnot, evenifshecould,havebecomehiswife exceptontheassuranceoffulfilment. Sothatthebreachofthemoralcompact isnotonlyapresentinjury;.itisthe falsifyingoftheconditionsof'marriage. Itdoesnotrenderthemarriageinvalid, butitwould,couldithavekenforeknown,havepreventedit.Womust speakofitasaveryunpleasantfaithlessness.Itisafaithlessnesswhich wouldbefataltoalmostanymarriage. Iftwopersons,makingconditionsbefore marriagewhichareunderstoodtobe essentialtothecompact,mayatany timedisregardthoseconditions,itis manifestthatnosoberpersonwill contracta"legal"marriage,without "legal"constraintsastoconditions. "Wefail,"saystheMorningPost,-1to understandwhysuchapromise"(the promiseoftheCatholicismofthechildren)"shouldnotbeenforcedbya CourtofEquity."Wethinkthatit oughtcertainlytobeso,becauseitwas aconditionofthemarriage.Thecase wouldbequitedifferenthadahusband whowasaCatholicmarriedawoman whowasaProtestantunderacompact thatthechildrenshouldbeProtestants; becauseaCatholicwouldhavenoright tomakesuchacompact,andhiswife wouldknowthatliebadnot,.Wedo notmeantosaythatitwouldnotbe aseriousmatterthataCatholicshould beguiltyofsuchadishonor;but, sincethewifewouldbeawarethatthe promisewasmostimpious,shecould notcomplainifitshouldbebroken. Thedifferencebetweenapromisewhich isaconditionofmarriage,andapromisewhichcannotbemade,isthe differencebetweenahonorablecompact andadishonorabletraptocatchawife.

Inthenextplace,theconsciousnessof theProtestanthusbandofthefactof theconditionofhismarriage-his knowledgethattheCatholicismofthe childrenwasasinegadnonofthe matviage-oughtcertainlytohavebeen consideredfromthemoralpointofview, thoughlegallyitmightnothavevalue.

Inthethirdplace,theagesofthe children-nine,eleven,andtwelve, respectively-madetheirforcedresolutionfromtheirlife-longconvictionsa mostseriousconsiderationforafather. Tobecompelledatsuchagestoturn awayfromdefiniteteaching,andtotake upwithProtestingneptions,mustof itselfbequitesufficienttorobjuvenile mindsofallrespectforallbelief whatsoever.And,finally,theplacing themotherunderaban,whileexalting thefatherintoatheologian,isenough tomakeyoungehil,:renenquireofone another"whetherauthorityisnotmore legalthanChristian?"

Thecomicsideofthisjudgmentis thattheJudgesinsistedgravelyonthe immenseimportanceofobediencetoa father;totallyignoringtheveryexistenceofthemother,ortreatingheras ifshewereaslave.Thetheologyof theJudgesmakesdisobediencetoa futher-underanyandeveryciroum, stance-themostflagrantofknown yentkfalenormitiesandritsvolts"

Dr.JohnsonraidofadultCatholicsis equallytrueofCatholicchildren,that theycannotgiveupsomuchandbe sincere.TheDivinesentimentsof Catholicismistheveryheartofachild's life;butthearidcoldnessofProtestantismisquiteunnatural.Still,theseare mainlyspiritualconsiderations,andlie outsidethejudicialequity,ofthecase. Viewingthecaseinallitsfeatures-its brokenfaithanduglyperfidy;its crueltytoboththemotherandthe children;itssubstitutionofnewdoubt forardentfait-wecannotfindagood Odetotheevil.Yetonegoodsidethere possiblymaybe-notinthecaseitself, butinitswarning-thatCatholicswill liespne.sagathsimmensehazard fromthefigth.elyRegister. Thegreyhoundrunsbytheeyesightonly andthisweobserveasafact.Theearths.pigeontieshis250mileshomewardbyeyesight-namely,frompointtopointofobjects whichhehasmarked;butthisisonlyour conjecture.Thefiercedragon-fly,with 12,000lensesinhiseye,dartsfromangleto anglewiththerapidityofaflashingsword, andasrapidlydartsback,notturninginthe air,butwithaclashreversingtheactionof hiswings,andinstantaneouslycalculating thedistanceoftheobject,orhewoulddash himselftopieces.Butinwhatconformationoftheeyedoesthisconsist?Noone cananswer.

Acloudoftenthousandgnatsdanceup anddowninthesun,themiuutestinterval betweenthem,yetnooneknocksanother headlonguponthegrassorbreaksalegor wing,longanddelicateastheyare.Suddenly,amidyouradmirationofthismatchlessdance,apeculiarlyhigh-shouldered, viciousgnat,withlong,pendantnose,darts outoftherisingandfallingcloud,andsettlingonyourcheek,insertsapoisonoussting. Whatpossessedthelittlewretchtodothis?

Didhesmellyourbloodinthemazydance? Nooneknows.

Therearethousandsofrespectableand evenpromidentfamiliesinAmericawhoare obligedtoacknowledge"onosadlosel"to "sellanameforaye,"andwhomust attributethedisgracetothedimenoveland trashyproductionsofkindredtasteand equallydestructivecirculatitb.Wemay judgeboweagerlyandardentlygoodparents whohavetomournwaywardnessorlossof virtueinabelovedchildwouldwishforthe thoroughcleansingandregenerationofa much-usedandmuch-abusedliterature.To effectsodesirableanendtheymustbeginby remodellingthefamilydisciplineandgeneral tacticsinthesocialcircle.Theymustfoster thevirilespiritrecommendedbythebest andablestjournals,buttheywillfindtheir principal-supportintheethicalwisdomof theCatholicChurch.Shehasalwaysadopted aprudent,benevolent,anddecisivepolicyin regardtoliterature.Evensomeofhercoin tdevotedchildrenthinkthatinthis particularpointsheistooconservative.Rut theWhOlehistoryofChristianliteraturepats thestampofapprovalonthecodeshehas adoptedandpromulgatedforitselevation andusefulness. Shedoesnotprohibitthereadingofworks offancy,sheonlywishestoconfineitwithin properbounds,andsurrounditwithhealthy safeguards.Theuseofchasteand classicmodelssheleavestothediscretionofmaturedandculturedmindsto youthofeithersexshedoesnotprohibit theirmoderateusebothforinstructionand enjoyment.Eventhemostpious,nay, asceticmindsintheCatholicChurcharo intimatelyacquaintedwiththebeautiesof imaginativecreation.Thelatelamented PopePiusIX.gavetoanEnplislitourist, inafewwords,amoreexhaustivecommentaryonthestyleandlanguageofScottand Byronthancouldbewritteninavolume. "YourScott,"saidhe,"isapainter,but Byronisasculptor."

Acarriagecomessuddenlyuponaflockof geeseonanarrowroad,Maddrivesstraight throughthemiddleofthem.Agoosewas neveryetfairlyrunover,noraduck.They ender verywheelsandhoofs,andyet somehowtheycontrivetoflapandwaddle safelyoff.Habituallystupid,heavyand indolent.,theyareneverthelessequaltothe emergency.

Amoreconspicuousexampleofthe evilsofmixedmarriageshasprobably neverbeenfurnishedtotheworld.It wouldbeoutrageoustoassertthatthere maynotbeexceptionalcaseswhere mixedmarriagesareapositivegood; butsuchexceptions,bothinthecontractandthefulfilment,arequitebeside thenormallinesoflife,Thedangeris greaterwhenawomanwhoisaCatholicmarriesamanwhoisanon-Catholic, becausehispowercancometotheaid ofhisprinciples,andcanenforceapositivelywholesaleapostacy.Thishas beenthecaseinthepresentinstance. Thelawgivestherighttothehusband, butdoesnotgiveanyrighttothewife; sothatintheeventofthehusband beingunreliablethereisnosortof remedyorrescue.Awholefamilymay beforcedintoapostacy,orintowhat may.beusbad,blankindifference. Whatcanpossiblybetheeffectonthe mindsofthethreechildren,whoare nowtobetaughtto"abhorPopery," saveacontemptfortheteacherswho canspeakevilofthedevotionswhich theyhadlearnedfromtheirCatholic mother?Andwhatcanthenbetheir estimateofthevalueofanyreligion, whentheyaretossedtoandfrobytheir ownparents-fromthedeeplyimbibed devotionsofthetruth,tothemere "protesting"sentimentalismoferror? Thepowerofjudgingofactualdanger, andthefreeandeasyboldnesswhichresult fromit,arebynomeansuncommon.Many birdsseemtohaveamostcorrectnotionof agun'srange,andwhilescrupulouslycareful tokeepbeyondit,confinetheircaretothis caution,thoughthemostobviousresource wouldbetoflyrightawayoutofsightand hearing,whichtheydonotchoosetodo. Andtheysometimesappeartomakeevenan ostentatioususeoftheirpower,fairlyputting theirnitanticlevernessinantagonismto thatofmanforthebenefitoftheirfellows. Welatelyreadnoaccount,byanaturalistin Brazil,ofanexpeditionhemadetooneof theislandsoftheeAmazontoshoot spoon-hills,ibisesandotherofthe magnificentgrallatorialbirdswhichwere mostabundantthere.Hisdesignwas completelybaffled,however,byawretched littlesand-piperthatprecededWin,continuallyutteringhistelltalecry,whichat oncearousedallthebirdswithinhearing. Theecclesiasticswhoconductthosenurseriesofpietyandlearningaresometimes. tauntedwithsternrigidity,becausetheywish toclipthewingsoffancybythecontrolling powerofreasonandreligion;buttheir prudentregulationsaremorethanjustified bytheresults.Inreadingthenoblestproductionsofmoderntimesintherealmof fancywefeelboundtorelegatethehighest awardsofmerittotwoclasseseithertothosewhohavehaultheopportunityofnoble,religiousculture,orto thosewhomroughcontactwiththeworld's trialshaschastenedintoatrainofthought moral,benevolent,elevating.

Wehavelatelynoticedwithunfeigned pleasureamongtheablestandmostinfluentialofourcouteuiporariesaspiritandtone inunisonwiththosewhichCatholicethics havealwaysendeavoredtostamponcurrent periodicalliterature.Thereallyrespectable portionoftheAmericanpressisboth pungentandscathingontheprurientefforts ofthewould-benovelistsandstory-tellersof the-day,anditscommentsarethesnore pointedastheyfurnishlivingexamplesof thefearfultendencyandconsequencesof depraved,misguidedfancy.To-daytheson ofhighly,respectablebutover-indulgent parents,withbrainsteepedandmaddened tntheverannoffoolish,wildadventure,is foundonthefrontiersofcivilizationwith revolverinpockettoshootdowntheoilnoxiousIndian.To-morrowthebenevoledt insocietyhavetomournthedownfallofa maidenmoving,perhaps,inthemostfavored socialcircles,withallthehurishgiftsof nature,but,alasIacademebythebeauty thatcanaloesbestowanimperishablemow*

Wehavemanyexamplesofthoseclasses inliterature,andtheirproductionsarethe onlyonesthatcan,oreverwillberecommendedbytheChurch.Onthesideof ProtestantismWalterScottazilDickens arethebeat,safes:andbrightestexamples ofelegant,classicalfiction,mbilstmany othersmaybereadwithsafetyandafair shareofprofit.Catholicitywithinthelast fourdecadeshasenlistedinthelighterdepartmentofliteraturealuminoushostthat hasoutshoneformerstarsofmagnitudein thehorizonoffiction.Butwemust,atthe sametime,acknowledgethatwehavea numberofditnly-twiukinglightseitherill fittedtoillumineanysubject,orwhichendeavortoshineonthosethatdonotreflect theirfeeblerays. Thereisavastdifference,however,betweenProtestant.andCatholicliteratureon thescoreofworthlessnessandmischief. Thechildrenofto-day,willbethemen andwomenoftheflaw*,thepossessors ofthefaithweinheritandthedispensers°filosocialprivilegeswenow ,andwhethertheywillbecome Catholicsandworthymembersof moiety;dependsmainlyandsolely,we mightsay,onthereligionstraining whichtheynowacquire,andtheinstructionandexamplestheyreceivein theirownhouses,fromtheirparents, whoaretheirnaturalguardiansand protectors.Parents,weregrettosay, aresadlyindifferentintoomany instances,towhatistheirplaindutyas regardsthecultureandtrainingoftheir children,andasaconsequence,the effectsandblessingsofhomeinfluenceontheiroffspring,areunknown orcompletelylost.Parentsareprone todependtoomuchonthereligious trainingtheirchildrenreceivedailyin School,andrarelysupplementwhat theyreceivetherein,andhence,the reasonwhysomanyoftheyoungmen andwomen,inourmidst,havesuchan imperfectknowledgeoftheirreligious faithandpractises.Ifsuchisthe lamentableconditionofchildreninour towns,whatcanweexpectofchildren inthecountrydistricts,whoarefar removedfrom"theChurch"andreligiou influences?Parentsinthebushare notmoreearnestintheirchildren's welfarethanareparentsintowns,and weare;therefore,reluctantlyforcedto theconclusion,thatchild'eusocircumstanced,beyondbeingoccasionallyremindedbytheirparents,thattheyare Catholics,areallowedtogrowupin indifference,andaresadlydeficientofthe knowledgeoftheirfaithandduty, whicheveryintelligentCatholicshould possess.Underthesecircumstances,the admonitionsofHisLordship,deserve peculiarattention,andwesincerelytrust parentswillnotfailtoprofitbythe instructionscontainedinHisLordship's Pastoral.Intimatelyconnectedwith thesubjectofeducation,istheconduct anddeportmentofCatholicsgenerally insociety,andweareverymuch pleasedtofind,thatHisLordshiphas dealtasevereblowtooneofthe prominentevilsofourday,towit, "vanityandextravaganceindress." Thefondnessofdresshascertainly reacheditsclimaxamongstus,andit cannotbegainsaid,amore"dressy"lot ofChurchgoers,cannotbefoundinany partoftheworld,thaninWestern Australia.Tomeetyoungladies,as wenowdo,whosepositioninsociety placesthemamongwhatisknownin themothercountry,asthe"working classes,"wendingtheirwaytoChurch onSunday,attiredonlyastheir superiorswouldappear,onmost"special occasions,"welldeservesthecensure whichHisLordshiphaspassedupon suchsenselessconductonthepartof toomanyofthemembersofourcongregations.Todressbecomingly,is whateveryonewoulddesire,butthe absurdimitationofthebeanmondeby. Catholics,cannotbetoostronglydeprecated.Anotherevilwhichafflicts society,hasbeenpointedoutbyHis Lordship,andthatistheilleffectsofa corruptliterature."Badanddangerous books"asHisLordshipremarks,"are unhappilyexceedinglymany,"and parentsarewiselycautionedagainst allowingtheirchildrenbeingbrought undertheirinfluence.Thewreckwhich "badbooks,"makesoffaithandmorals isdeplorable,andhencethetimelyand opportunewarningofourbeloved Bishop.Havingthusbrieflytouched uponthemostsalientpointsofthe LentenPastoralof1879,wewould,in conclusion,urgeuponourreaders,a carefulandattentivestudyofthat seasonabledocument.

WhensuchSocietieshavebeenpromotedinanytowninthecolony,they areinaparticularmannerdeservingof thesupportofCatholics.Catholics,it shouldberemembered,byjoiningthese Societies,notonlypromotetheirown spiritualandmaterialwelfare,butthey alsoassistinextendingtheinfluence andknowledgeof'theirreligionamong theirfellow-colonists.TheHibernian CatholicBenefitSociety, whichofferssuchundoubtedmaterial advantagestoitsmembers,though establishedunderepiscopalsanction, hasnotreceived,particularlyinthe Metropolis,thatencouragementwhich itunquestionablydeserves.Noexisting benefitSocietyinthecolony,holdsout toitsmembersmoreadvantages,and consideringthattheHibernianAustralasianCatholicBenefitSocietyisfounded onCatholicprinciples,andoffersas solidinducementsasotherSocietiesto itsmembers,itisnothinglessthana reproachtous,asapeople,thatmore amongstushavenotjoineditsranks. TneGOVERNOR.-ThelongabsenceofHis ExcellencytheGovernorandsuite,fromthe Vice-RegalresidenceinPerth,hasgiven risetoanythingbutflatteringremarksonthe businesshabits,devotiontotheinterestofthe colony,tastesandinclinationofGovernorsin particular,andofGovernorsgenerally. WesternAustraliahashowever,neveryethad aGovernor,thathassucceededinpleasing everybody,andwhenwearereallytogeta Governor,whocanbepronouncedas"the rightmanintherightplace,"wewouldnot dareventuretotell,butjustnownearly everyoneisunanimousinthinkingthat GovernorORD,atthepresenttime,isthe rightman,butinthewrongplace.Governor ORDmayhowever,thinkdifferently,and despitetheunfavorableopinionofthepeople onthemainland,mayfromexperience, havecometotheconclusionthatRottnestis beyonddoubtasnugplace,andoneinwhich, surroundedbysubstantialcomforts,lifecan bethoroughlyenjoyed.Wehavenodoubt whatever,thatthatisreallyGovernor ORDBopinion,orunquestionablyHisExcellencywouldnotremainsolonginhis islandresidence.Butitisproverbial,"the people"arehardtobepleased,aswhenthe GovernorisreallyinhisVice-Regalhomein ourCity,hispresenceispopularlypro- nouncedasnotofmuchconsequence,andas forallthegoodaGovernorcandothe colony-sothepeoplesay-hemightaswell resideatTimbuctoo,asinSt.George's Terrace.Thereisthisdifferenc'showever, betweenthetwoplaces,andonewhichs Governorwillneverfailtoobserve,andthat isthatintheformerplacearesidence-even ifpossible-wouldbeunendurable,whilein Rottnest,ease,pleasure,andcomforts,are attainable,andcanbethoroughlyappreciated. People-everfickleastheyare-arenow however,itwouldseem,dissatisfiedabout GovernorORDbeingatRottnest,andwhen newslatelyarrived,thathewagabouttobe transferredtoNewSouthWales-hadHis Excellencyonlyheardonehalfofwhat"the people"said,hecouldnothavefailedto conclude,thattheytookadeepandearnest interestinhispromotion.

Nowitisthis"trueEnglishstuff," this"grim,earnest,stubbornenergy," whichformstheback-boneoftheEnglishcharacter.BetEtonistheplace ofplaceswheretheEnglishcharacter toitsfullestandpurestperfectionis developed.ThereforeitistoEtonyou mustgo,ifyouwouldseehowthis "tiueEnglishstuff,"thisrawmaterial, ismanipulatedintothemodelman. Thereyoumustgo,ifyoureallywant the"genuine,unadulteratedarticle."

Thereistobefoundavastand4samplicatedorganismforcarryingoatone solitarypurpose-thedevelopingand yetrefining-still,notmorethanthe materialwillbear-thebulldogpartof theEnglishman,andsublimatingthe physicalcourageoftheanimal,with hispluck,energy,andendurance,into whatiscalled"agentleman,"witha certaincodeofhonour,acertainconventionalbearing,andagivenquantum ofinformation."Thisiswhataboy goestoEtonfor,"saystheTimes,"and hegetsit. Wearefarfrommeaningtoimply thattheydidsoinasmanywords,or that(inthegeneralacceptationofthe term)theymeanttodoso.Their designwastobreakswayandclearoff fromtheChurch.Thatiswhatthey aimedat;theireyeswereonthemark, andwhenamankeepsfixedeyesupon thepointhqmeanstobit,heseesbut littleelse.Theymaynothaveclearly seenwhattheyweredoing;butthatis noreasonwhytheydidnotdoit,indeed ratherthereverse;hadtheyfullyknown whattheywereabout,whowould venturetosaythattheywouldhave

Thereareonearthtwohuge, antagonisticpowers,withopposedends, principles,motives,andobjects.They arebothcolossalintheirproportions, andwide-spreadovertheearth.They numberundertheiropposingbanners millionsofmen,andpenetrate"usque addivisionemaniruteetspiritus,"and breathsthebreathoftheirlivesintothe soul.Wemean-theChurch,andthe world.Theonlymeanstoescapebeing absorbedintothelatterandlivingits life,breathingitsbreath,andpartaking ofitscharacter.Therejection,the negationoftheone,isfallingapreyto theother.Theworldistoopowerful, tooencompassing,tooconstraining,too cleverasorceresstobesuccessfully opposedbyanypowerofhumancreation.Itmustbeaheavenlyinspiration whichcanwithstandthewithering,the corruptinginfluenceofthatpoisonous monsterwhoseverybreathispestilence, andwhoseveryliteisdestruction:-

Sothatwhenthenationthrewoffthe Church,anddestroyedthesupernatural elementoflife,itbecamehelplessasa childtowithstand,evenhadithada mindtodoso,thefetidbreathwhich wasfillingtheearth.Whatwasthe resultofthisrejectionoftheChurch? Now,VfromtheEcclesiasticalHierarchy vfewidetothe60411order,historytellsus thattemporalsovereignshaveprescribedat ataunttimesregulationswithregardtothe qpalityanddimensionsofdresstobeworn bytheirsal:lootsaccordingtotheirposition lasociety.Evencommonsenseandmoon dictatethatinwellregulatedsocietyevery oneshoulddressaccordingtohiscondition. Itisnotbecomingthataworkingmanshould appearasoneofhighstandinginsociety apeasant'sattireshouldnotbeasthatofa nobleman.Ifitbeotherwisethereisconfusionandperversionoforder.Andyet whatdoweobserveinourdays?Inferiors apethoseabovethem,andlowestandhighest areoftenalikeinoutwardappearance.The evilismoreremarkableinthefemalesex, whoshowthemselvestoanextraordinary degree,inmanycases,thevictimsofvain ostentation.Nowwemust*observethis prideofdressisoffensivetoGod,sinceit confusestheorderwhichhehasestablished. Itisalsooffensiveandinjurioustosociety, becauseitconfoundsitsvariousclasses.It iswrongalsoonotherpoints.Itproceeds fromaspiritofvanity,whichisvenially sinful,anditistheoccasionofwrongin others,sinceitstimulatesthemtoimitateit. Itmakesmanylivebeyondtheirmeans,and thusrendersthemguiltyofinjusticeincontractingdebtstheyareunabletopay,or leavethemwithoutprovisionagainstthe timeofneedanddistress.Howmanyyoung womenexpendalltheirearningsinsuperfluousdress,andwhentheyareoutofsituation,theyhavenotwherewithtosupport themselvesforafewdays,butrequirethe assistanceofothersThenagainthisover displayofattireisasignofawordlyand effeminatemind,itfostersevilinclinations, anditisanincentiveofimpurityinoneself andothers.Thosewhoindulgeinthissort ofpridearetoothers,sometimeswithoutany evilintention,butoftendirectlybytheir levityandvanity,anoccasionofsin.And willnotGodpunishit?Hedoesevenin thisworldinIslasiii.16.wereadthatGod himselfcomplainedofthedaughtersofSion fortheirprideandvanityindress,and threatenedthemwiththepunishmentstheir pridefearedmost.TheLorddeclaresthat inhisangerhewilldeprivethemoftheir richapparelandtheirtrinkets,andevenof theirpersonalbeauty."Andinsteadofa sweetsmell"ofperfumes,"therewillbea stench,andinsteadofagirdleacord,and insteadofcurledhairbaldness,andinstead ofastomacherhair-cloth."Leteveryone dressmodestlywithoutvanityorostentation accordingtohispositioninlife.Andlet parents,practisingmoderation,teachtheir chlidrentopracticeitlikewise.Letchildren betaughttobecontentwithamodesthumble butdecentdress:andletitbeimpressed uponthemthatitisnecessarytheyshould assistatMasseverySundayandholydays ofObligation,eveniftheyhavenootherbut theirordinaryweartomakeanappearance in. Wemustnotconcludewithoutbriefly alludingtoanotherpoint,asregardsthe trainingofchildren,towhichwedeemit welltodrawtheattentionofparents.As wehavealreadysaid,parentsareboundto forbidtheirchildrenallintercoursewith viciouscompanions,andtoremovefromtheir wayeverythingwhichmightprovetheruin oftheirsoul.Asadexperienceteachesus thatmanyhavebeenpervertedbythereadingofbadbooks.Theseareofvarious kinds.Someareopenlybadinothersthe dangeriscovert.Someareopposedtofaith, eitherassailingthetruthsofreligion,or propoundingerror,orturningintoridicule somepracticesandritesoftheCatholic Church.Othersarecontrarytomoral,exhibitingviceincharmingandseductive colours,anddrawingtheimaginativetothe loveofit,andinstillinginthemadesire whichsometimesraisestoastrongpassion toimitatethecharacterofthosepersonsas describedinthose-books.Whilstbadbooks ofeverykindoughttobeavoidedbythe virtuousofalldegrees,therearespecial reasonswhytheyshouldbeshunnedbythe young.Inyouththemindisverysusceptibleofimpressions.Likethesoftsoilit easilyreceivestheseedofgoodorevil.And whatitreceives,itreadilyretainsforlife. Howcanweexpectachildtobestrongin thefaith,whoreadsworksCatholicor heretical,worksinwhichtruthanderrorare alikeinculcated?Andhowcanwehope thatchildwillshowamindinlovewith virtue,whosemindroamsatwillthrough thepagesofbooksinwhichscenesof sensuality,ifnotofimpurity,aredepicted? Andletnoonethinkthedangeranuncommonone.Badanddangerousbooksare unhappilyexceedinglymany.Indifference willnotexcuseparentsforaneglectof dutyandagrievousneglectofdutyitis ontheirpart,iftheyexercisenocontrolover thenatureofthereadingoftheirchildren.
