Bismarckisnothingifnotvigorous. Thereisalullatpresentinthestorm raisedbyhisproposedbilltosmother speechintheReichstag,andtherewere evenrumoursthathewasinclinedto recedefromsorevolutionaryademand. Butthereisnolull,norelaxationin thepursuit,oftheSocialistquarry. Thepolicedarenotsitdowntorest themselves,andastheyarearmedwith vastpowers,therazziaisconstantlyenlivening.Suspectsaretappedonthe shoulderandaskedtoexpatriatethemselves.Meetingsaresoharassed, wherenotboldlydispersed,thatfew caretorisktheannoyanceofcallingor attendingthem.Thenthereisa vigilantwatchmaintainedagainstthe inexhaustiblewellofsedition,the Socialistpress.TheCryofthePeople, anewspaper,hasjustbeenprohibited. Apopularratnanceentitled"The StruggleforDailyBread"hasshared thesamefate,andevenapicture-hook foryoungandold,"KingMammon andLiberty,"wasnotinsignificant enoughtoescapepolicewrath.We arenotdisposedtoargue,ontheslender evidencesbeforeus,thatthepublicationsinquestionwerenotseditiousand thereforeobnoxioustoallrespectable governments,butwecaneasilydiscern inthisstiflingofeveryattempttoutter acryofpaintheprovocationofa terribleoutbursthereafter.Thebest guaranteeforfreedomandhealthyadministrationisreasonablelibertyof speechsadwriting.Thevoiceand penaresafetyvalvestoastate.Let bothbesilenced,becausetheyproclaim thewrongsimposedbydespoticpower, andconspiracyisasinevitableasthe successionofnightandday.

GOODNEWSTORTIPPLERS.

AdoctornamedD'Ungarhasinventedadecoctionwhich,itisreported, "notonlycuresintemperance,butleaves thedrunkardwithanuncenquerable aversiontospirituousliquors!"The medicineisredPeruvianbark,apound ofwhichisreducedtopowderand soakedinapintofdilutedalcohol,then strainedandevaporateddowntohalfa pint.Inseriouscasesthedoseisateaspoonfuleverythreehours.Thisis graduallydecreaseddowntotenorfive drops.Themedicalandtemperance menofChicago,ofwhichcitytheinventorofthenewmedicineisaresident,are "verymuchexcitedoverthenew remedy."Thiscanhardlybewondered at.Thenewsis,however,almosttoo goodtohetrue.Suchamedicine wouldsoonrestoretheworldtoitsoriginalstateofParadisiacalhappiness,for drinkisthesourceofwellnighall humanevil.

"Itwasabright,starlightnight, andthewritersatinthepilothouse, talkingtothesteersman,whoguidedthe steamersafelythroughtheshadowsof thefrowningpeakoftheHighlands,and answeredquestionsorvolunteeredinformationbetweentherotationsofthe wheel.Asweturnedabendinthe riveralightthatlookedlikeastarof thefirstmagnitudetwinkledfaraway inthedistance.That'sfifteenmiles away,'saidthemanatthewheel.

Well,itwasononeoftheseoccasions,I wascomiu'uptheriverontheold Columbusaftershe'dgotoutof carryin'passengers,andtooktothe towia'business.We'dgotlittlenorth ofRondout,andIwasallaloneatthe wheel;Iheardarumblin'behindme, andIlookedaround,andwhenIsawa greatbigcloudwiththunderheads rushingupfromthesouth,Iknewwe weregoingtocatcharipper.Wewere thenprettynearlyabreastofTivoli,and SaugertiesLighthousewasonlyabout twomilesahead.Aslooploadedwith bluestone,whichhadjustputoutfrom themouthofEsopusCreek,andwas standingdowntheriver,wentover whenthesquall,struckher;andsoon Isawtwomenstrugglinginthe water.

JESUITSANDPOLITICS.

TheRev.FatherBeckx,Generalof theSocietyofJesushasaddressedthe followinglettertotheJesuitProvincials: "Thepublicandthepress occupythemselveslargely,andin differentways,withregardtothe doctrinesandthelineofconduct adoptedbytheSocietyofJesusrelative tovariousformsofpoliticalgovernment.Inpresenceofthesepolemics, Ifeelobligedbythedutyofmyministrytorecall,totheFathersProvincial, theprinciplesoftheSocietyinthis matter.TheSocietyofJesusbeinga religiousOrder,hasnootherdoctrine orruleofconductthanthoseofHoly Church,asmypredecessor,theRev. FatherRootham,wasledtodeclarein 1847.ThegreatestgloryofGodand thesalvationofsouls-suchisourtrue andonlyend,atwhichweareaiming bytheapostolicworkssuitabletothe institutionofSt.Ignatius.Infactand intheory,theSocietyofJesusis,and declaresitself,astrangertoallpolitical parties,whatevertheymaybe.Inall countries,andunderallformsofgovernment,itconfinesitselfexclusivelyto theexerciseofitsministry,havingin viewonlyitsend,whichisfarsuperior totheinterestsofhumanpolitics. Alwaysandeverywhere,eachmember oftheSocietyloyallyaccomplishesthe dutiesofagoodcitizen,andafaithful subjecttothePowerthatruleshis country.Alwaysandeverywhere,the Societysaystoallbyitsteachingand itsconduct: 'RendertoCaesarthe thingsthatareCiesar's,andtoGodthe thingsthatareGod's.'Thesearethe principleswhichithasneverceasedto professandfromwhichitwillnever depart."

inthearenaofliteratureandscience; itissweettolookbacktothecradleof one'searlyeducation,andtothosedistinguishedmenwhocarefullyapplied themselveswithzealtoinstillthebest ofdoctrinesintothemind.Henceit. isthatyourexcellentwords,andyour presencehere,havecausedusthe deepestjoy,bycarryingusbacktothe dayswhenwewereamongthestudents oftheRomanCollege.

Aquarterofacenturyagotherewas amemorableconflagrationatSacramento City,Cal.,bywhichtheentirebusiness portionofthecitywaslaidinashes. Whenthegreatfirewasatitsmaximum fury,awealthymerchantnamedM'Nulty whoownedsomeoftheheaviestbusiness establishmentsinthecity,gazedfora fewmomentsupontheworkofdestruction,andthen,insteadoffoldinghis bandsandweepingoverthedisaster,he wenttothenearestliverystable,hired afleet-footedhorse,rodelikeJohn

SKETCHBYTHEAUTHOROFTHETUDOR

DYNASTY,NOTICEDINANOTHRCOLUMN.

TheCardinal'shealthhadbeendeclining forsometimehewaslaboringundo dropsy,aweaknessofthelimbsandageneral prostration,butthevigourofhismindwas stillunimpaired.Hewasnot,however,ina conditiontotravelwithexpeditioninthe cold,dampdaysofNovember.Upwardsof threethousandpersonsassembledatCawood toseehimaprisoner,not,asinLondon,to exult,buttopityandblesshimforallthe goodofficesherenderedthem.Ilisspirits werequitefallen,yetheseemedquitesoothed bythegoodnatureofthepeople,men, women,andchildren.Theycriedwitha loudvoice,saysCavendish,"Godsaveyour Gracethefouleviltakethemthathath takeryoufromusandweprayheaven thatavengeancemaylightuponthemall." Thustheyrancryingafterhimthroughthe townofCawood,theylovedhintsowell.So writesaneye-witnessWhenWolsey reachedSheffieldParkhemanifesteda changefortheworse.Onthefollowing morning,atanearlyhour,Cavendishfound himseatedonachestwithhisbeadsinhis hands.TherewsofKingston'sarrivalfrom Londonmadehimtremble;hehadaforebodingofthemessageonwhichtheConstableoftheTowercame.Hewasexcited, cried,andsobbed,theninamournfulaccent exclaimed"Well,asGodwilleth,sobeit. thefleetinghonoursandtransitorysplendours ofStateaswellasuponthedeceitand wickednessofhumanambition.

TheScotchladiesreignabsolute mistressesintheirhousesandthemenin alldomesticmattersyieldachivalrous ortediencetothem.Thepeoplelivewell, havingplentyofbeef,muttonandfowl,and abundanceoffish.Thehumblerclasses,the wo,oenespecially,areallofaveryreligious turnofmind.AltogetherIfoundtheScotch tobeaveryagreeableand,Imustadd,an amiablepeople.SuchwasScotlandtowards thecloseofthefifteenthcentury-aperiod describedbymodernwritersasoneof barbarism,ignorance,immoralityandsuperstition. Theaboveaccountoftheunfortunate KingwhofellonFloddenFieldmustgreatly correcttheconceptionsweshouldformof bunfrompopularhistorians.

THENEWCATHEDRAL-12,724PLACEDON THECORNERSTONE.

OnSunday,26thJanuary,theMostRev. Dr.Moran,assistedbytheMostRev.I)r. Redwood,BishopofWellington,andthe clergyoftheDioceseofDunedin,andinthe presenceofabouttenthousandpeople, blessedandlaidthefoundation-stoneofa newCatholiccathedralinthiscity.Thisis noordinaryevent,anditdeserves,therefore, aspecialnotice.

Wemayherecallattentiontoafew circumstanceswhichtakeitoutofthe ordinaryrunofevenremarkablethings.The CatholicsoftheDioceseofDunedinare neithernumerousnorwealthy.Neverthelesstheyhaveundertakentheerectionofa cathedralwhich,whencompleted,cannot failtoreflectverygreatcreditonallwho hadanypartinitserection.Itisoflarge dimensions,andallwhohaveseenthe admirabledesignofthearchitect,Mr.W.F. Petro,havereadilyadmittedthatitwillbe bothimposingandofverygreatbeauty.

Thedesignisgothicandhighlyornamental,anditsdimensionsare:-Length, 230feetbreadthofnaveandaisles,55 feetlengthoftransept100feet; breadth ofsame,40lengthofsanctuary,60feet heighttoridge,65feet,ofmaintowerand spire,200,andofthetwofronttowers83 feeteach.Itwillaffordamplesittingroom for2,000persons,andwillbefurnishedin admirablestyle,andprovidedwithsacristies andeverythingelserequisiteinacathedral. Abouttwelvemonthsago,thefirstcollectionforfundstoenableabeginningtobe made,tookplaceinthebuildingnowused asachurchatSt.Joseph's,andonthis occasionthesumof£3,500waspromised andpaidinpart.Fromtimetotimesince, thesubscribershavepaidinstalmentsof theirsubscriptionsascallsweremadeupon them,andtheremainderwillbeforthcoming whenrequired.

Theworksofthefoundationswere sufficientlyadvancedtoenablethebishopto blessandlaythefoundation-stoneon lastSunday,andathisLordship'sinvitation manymembersofthecongregation,asalso severalfromotherpartsofthedioceseadvancedtothenewlylaidfoundation-stone, andplacedonittheircontributions.The resultwasthemagnificentofferingof £2,724ofwhichamountnolessasnmthan (£874),eighthhundredandseventy-four poundsincash,waspaiddownonthespot. Thisisanearnestofwhatistocome,and authorisestheexpectationthatlargeasis theundertaking,itisnottoolargeforthe willinghandsandheartsofDunedin Catholics.Fullyconsciousofthis,and feelingthatthiswaspre-eminentlythe occasiontogiveexpressiontothisconsciousness.BishopMorangracefullyandgratefullyavailedhimselfoftheopportunityof proclaimingtoalltheworldhistrustinhis people,andhisgreatappreciationoftheir faithandcharity. When,afterhavingblessedandlaidthe foundation-stone,headdressedthem,hedid notsethimselftoprovetothemtheir obligationsortoappealtotheirenthusiasm fortheChurch.Notatall,nordidhe arrayargumentsmeanttoremindthemof theirduty,liesimplytoldthemhehadno dutytoperformfurtherthantocongratu- latewiththemontheceremonyoftheday, andtoexplaintothemthemodeinwhich

theyweretomaketheircontributions,say- ingheknewtheywoulddonowasthey alwaysdid-thatis,theirdutyandthey woulddoitinaspiritofgreatgenerosity. Hetoldthemthathadhenotknownhis peoplethorougnly,andreliedonthemimplicitly,hewouldneverhaveundertakenso largeandexpensiveaworkandthathehad undertakenitinconsequenceofhisknowledgeoftheirgenerositytowardsallgood worksinthepast.Thisishighpraise,but nothigherthanisobserved.Theresult provedtheaccuracyofhisestimateofthem. Itmayalsobestatedherethatintwelve months,acomparativelysmallbodyof Catholics,notburdenedwithmuchofthe superfluitiesofthisworldhavebornethe splendidtestimonytothefaithwhichis derivedfromcontributionstotheircathedral fund,amountingtosixthousandpounds sterling.True,allthismoneyhasnotyet beenpaid,butnearlythehalfhasbeenpaid, andtheotherhalfwillbeforthcomingwhen requiredandaskedfor. Suchfactsastheseshouldnotbepermitted toremainhiddeninonelittlecornerofthe world-suchatestimonytotheCatholic faithshouldnotbepermittedtoliehidden inthesedaysofunbeliefandirreligion.

Attheannualmeetingofaubscrinersto St.Mary'sCathedral,HobartTown,heldat St.Joseph'sonSundayevening,16thFeb., theRightRev.Dr.Murraymadethefollowinginterestingremarks:Hewashappytofindhimselfonceagain intheirmidstthisyearashehadsooften beenwiththemhebegantolookonhimself asaninstitutioninHobartTown(alaugh). Itseemedtheycouldnotdowithouthim anymorethanhecoulddowithoutthem,for hethankfullyacknowledgedthatheowed hishealthtohisvisitstoTasmania.Be hadbeenrecommendedtotakeatripto Europe,whichhedid,buthefoundthathis tripstoTasmaniadidhimmoregood,than hislengthenedtriptoEurope.IllsLordshiphadanadditionalreasonforcoming here,namelyhisfriendshipfortheBishop ofHobartTown(applause),whichwasof longstanding,andcommencedin1845or 1846.I)r.MurphywasthenayoungBishop, andwasmakinghisfirstvisitadlimina Apostolorum.He(Dr.Murray)doubtedif inallhisecclesiasticalhistory,therewasanotherinstanceofamansoyoungbeingpro- motedtothemitre,havingbarelyattained thirtyyearsofage.He(Dr.Murray)was thenaboyof17or18yearsold,inthecollegeofthePropaganda.Ifhehadbeen older,-hehadtodosixyearsadditional study,butifhehadbeenordained-he(Dr. Murray)wouldhavebeenoneofthenoble bandofvolunteermissionarieswhoaccompaniedBishopMurphytohisdistantdiocese ofHyderabad,inIndia.Thatmeeting wouldbegladtohearthatoneofthosemissionarieswasthepresentBishopofBathurst, N.S.W.,(Dr.Quinn).His(Dr.Murray's) friendshipforDr.Murphyincreasedmore andmore,andbewouldappealtoHisLordshipto-nightifithadgrownanythingless bythelapseofyears.(Applause.)Ile (Dr.Murray)thereforenaturallytookan interestintheHobartTownCathedral,the Cathedralofhisfriend.Hehadonlyat firstpromisedacontributionof£50,buthe somuchadmiredthezealandcourageof theirBishopintheundertaking,thatheresolvedtomakehisdonation£100.(Much applause.)Furthermorehewouldurge uponhisownfriendsandpeoplethenecessityofaidingFatherBeechinor'sintended appealbyeverymeansintheirpower;and ifhe(FatherBeechinor)werenotsuccessful inthedioceseofMaitland,nomanwould regretitmorethanhe(Dr.Murray)would himself.That,surely,wasafurtherstimulustothepeopleofHobartTowntoarouse themselvesfromtheirlethargytoasenseof theirownduty,andnottodependsomuch onfriendsabroad.(Hear,hear.)Hehad hearditsaidcontinuallythattheywerepoor inTasmania,anda"poormouth"wascontinuallyputon,pleadinginability,andso forth.Entthatwasnotthecasefromhis knowledgeofthecountry.HeknewHobart Townwell,andhehadbeenthroughallthe districtsofTasmaniainthecourseofhis frequentvisitshere.OutsideofHobart Townthepeopleapparentlyworkedwitha differentspirittheybuilttheirownchurches andpresbyteriesfortheclergy,andthey supportedthem,andtookdelighttherein(hear,hear,)-andalsohelpedtheHobart Townpeopletobuildtheirchurches,and theyrejoicedindoingso.Astheybad heardfromtheirfriend,Mr.O'Reilly,he wasdelightedtohearthatthepeopleinthe districtwhereheresidedwerepreparedto aidagainifcalledon.AndHobartTown werequiteabletodisplayliberalitytowards anobjectwhichtheywouldhereafterhave reasontobeproudof.He(Dr.Murray) hadvisitedthecathedralgroundsfrequently sincehisarrivalhere,andlastweeknoticed thattheworkmenwereabsentonthefirst, secondandthirddaysoftheracesi His Lordshipaskedwherethemenwere1 "Gonetotheraces"wasthereply.Now hewouldaskwheredidthepeoplegetthe moneyfortheracesonthosedays1Hehad seencabs,carriages,omnibusesandother

vehiclesgoingtotheraces.Heheardtho whielleofthetrainalmosthourly,andhe wastoldtheywereofftotheraces(alaugh) andeachtrainwasfilledwithpassengers. HobartTownwastransferredtoElwick, andElwickwastransferredtoHobartTown (alaugh.)He(I)r.Murray)wasnotan enemytoraces,quitethecontrary.Heliked raceswhenproperlyandorderlyconducted, buthealsothoughtthatallthosepeoplewho wenttotheraces,oughttobeliberaltothe worksofthechurchaswellaslavishin expenditureonthemselves.IfBishop Murphyhadone-eighthofthemoneywhich hispeoplespentattheracesandthe regatta,heneednothesitateonemoment aboutthepaltry£1000whichseemedto createsuchdifficulty.lie(Dr.Murray) hadonlyoneregretinconnectionwIththe Cathedral,whichwasthatastonehadbeen leftonastoneoftheoriginalstructureas nooneforamomentwoulddoubtthatitwas adisgracetoeveryoneconnectedwithit. (Hear,hear).InthehistoryoftheChurch intheSouthernHemispheretherewasnot tobefoundaparallelcaseandhedoubtedif inmoderntimesanywhere,theycouldpoint toanystructurecomingtogriefso lamentablyandinsoshortatimeasthe firstCatholicCathedralofHobartTown, andHisLordshipdenouncedthework,tower, walls,arches,pilaster,stone,mortar,every- thingappearedtobedefectiveandbad,and hewouldaskwhereweretheeyesofall connectedwithit?HewassurethatMr. Hunterwouldbearouteverywordhesaid inconnectionwiththecondemnedwork. Twochapelshadbeenallowedstilltostand andaportionofthechancelwall,andhe regretteditbutBishopMurphyhadtoldh,m theyweresufficientlysubstantialandwith somerepairswouldhemadeimperviousto destruction.He(I)r.Murray)hopedso,hut hadheseriousdoubts.Astotheprojected visitofFatherDanielBeechinortoMaitland, hesaidwhenFatherBeechinorcametohis diocesehewouldhavetoworkveryhardto collectmoney.Jetthemnot:imaginethat hehadonlytoaskandhave.Littlethey knewofthedifficultiesofone,holdingsuch aresponsible,and,atbestsuchathankless missionashis.Itwasnoteveryonethat wasfitforitbuttheBishopevidently knewhisman,andtheBishophadnotbeen disappointed,andwouldhavereasontobe proudofhislabours,andtheirresults. (Applause.)HisLordshipwentontoremarkthatafewminutesbefore,hehad askedFattierBeechinorwhathehadgotin QueenslandandNewEngland?whenhe quietlyansweredhim£1,600.Thatmust haverequiredsuperhumanexertions,andthe activeeffortsofonewhoseheartwasevidentlyinthework.(Applause.)HisLordshipexpressedthehopethatthedaywas notfardistantforopeningtheCatIndral hewouldtrytobehereagain,andnodoubt allwouldthenrejoiceinthatevent,andthat he,towhomitowedagreatdeal,liewould sayowedeverything,whohadworkedin "goodfame,andevilfame,"forthegloryof God,wouldrejoicetoo.HisLordshipwished himsuccesshecongratulatedhimonhis work,andwishedhimmanyyearsintheenjoymentofit,andhealsotrustedthatthe secondCathedralwouldbehismonument whengenerationsyetunbornwouldlook about,andthathewouldbeabletosaythat thegloryofthelatterwouldbegreaterthan thatofthefirst.FinallytheBishopurged themtobecharitable,"Hewhoabided'in charity,abidethinGod,forGodischarity." oftheChurch,anabandantcropof troublesawaitsyouandmanyhardships youwillhavetobear;seethatyou arenotcastdown;fortodoandsuffer greatthingsisthecharacteristicofa christian."NotonlytherepresentativesoftheCatholicPresswhowere present,buteverylabourerinthesame fieldthroughouttheworldhascause forgladnessinthesecheeringwords. MODERN'INFIDELITY.

WHOEVERwouldlookatthereverses whichhavebefallenreligioninthe greatnationsofEurope,-Italy,Germany,FranceandSpain-wouldalmostfeelinspired,withsomemodern thinkers,toexclaim,"Christianityhas haditsday."

oncethemostchristianof nations,sanctifiedbythebloodofso manymartyrs,illuminatedbytheteachingandexampleofsomanysaintsand doctors,guidedimmediatelybythe VicarofChrist,hasoflateyearsbeena hot-bedofinfidelityandrevolution.From theAlpstotheAdriaticinfidelityis rampant.

IthasseizedonthePress,theMunicipalities.theUniversities,Collegesand Schools;ontheSenate,andhomeof deputies,thearmyandnavy;infact ithasnotleftasingleinstitationuntouched.

Thepowerofthepressatthepresent dayisunlimited.Itisamighty enginefortieshapingofthedestinies ofmeninmoderntimes.Theimportanceofusingitwellorillcannothe overstated.Hithertoithasbeenenormouslyworkedforevilandindetriment totheCatholicChurch,butitisatwoedgedsword,sharponeitherside.If rightlyuseditspowerforgoodiscommensuratewithitspotencyforeviland theywhosoutiliseithavetheapprobationoftheHolyFatherandhisblessing upontheirendeavours.

Ithasrobbed,dethronedandimprisonedtheVicarofChrist;profanedand plunderedthesanctuaries;prohibited thefreeworshipofGed;banished manyoftheministersofreligion;and substitutedfortheemblemofsalvation theheathenemblemsofancientRome. "Europe,"wroteFERRARIFedRep, "hasdeclaredawarofreligionagainst Rome,norcanweadvanceastepwithoutpullingdownthecross."

ItcannotbedeniedthatCatholicsas abodyhavebeenremissinutilising andsupportingthepresswhichrepresentsthem.Itisequallyundeniable thattheconsequenceoftheirapathyin thisrespecthasbeenlosstothemselves andtotheCatholicChurch.Thereis noneedtogobeyondcolonialexperiencestolearnwhatcanbedoneby largelymakinguseofthepublicpress. Societyinthecoloniespresentsinstances ofreligiousbodiesofutterinsignificance whichyettakeaforemoststandinall socialaffairs.Therearereligioussects insignificantintheirnumbersascomparedwithCatholics,insignificantin theamountofrealandpracticalgcod theydo,insignificantinthedegreeof culturethattheymaybemetwith eitherintheirmembersorevenintheir ministers,yetaretheyaheadof Catholicsinsocialstanding,andthe onlyassignablereasonfortheirprominenceistheirunwearyingactivityin makinguseofthepublicpress.Here liestheirsecret:Whatevertheydo theyprintit.Ifitbeonlyatea-meetingtheyhold-therabidspeechesof someilliteratebutcherortailor;the rantingsofsomehalf-taughtChadband aregivenforthtotheworldintype worthytheutteranceofaGLADTSONE orDISRAELI.Thepresentationofa pairofslippersorthedonationofafew halfpencetoconverttheheathenis chronicledwithgrotesquesolemnity. Yetwhilesuchprosccdingisveryabsurd,itiswithalveryeffective.These people,wiseintheirgenerationforce themselvesinprint,print,print,upon thenoticeofsocietyandsocietynotices themaccordingly.

FortunatelythemonthofMayisamostappropriatetimeforthefulfilmentofthepious worksenjoined. TheconditionsonwhichthePlenaryIndulgenceinformofJubileeisgrantedby theHolyFatherisasfollows:1.-81xvisitstotheChurchnamedbythe BishoporhisVicarorOfficial.Ateach visitpiousprayersaretobeofferedup toGodforsomespaceoftime"forthe prosperityandexaltationoftheCatholic ChurchandtheHolySee;fortheextirpationofheresyandtheconversionof allwhoareinerrorfortheconcordof Christianprincesforpeaceandunity oftheFaithful,"andforthePope'sintention. 2.-Oneday'sfastandabstinence.

3.-ConfessionandHolyCommunion.

4.-Analmstothepoor,orinaidofsome piouswork. Allthosewhoareinprisonorhinderedby bodilyorotherinfirmitymayhavetheabove conditionscommutedtootherworksof pietybyaConfessorapprovedbytheBishop; childrenwhohavenotyetmadetheirfirst communioncanbedispensedfromtheobligationofreceivingHolyCommunion.

SADACCIDENTATSUBIAC0,-During thethunderstormwhichragedwithsuch violenceoverPerthanditsvicinityyesterday afternoon,theBoys'OrphanageatSubiaco presentedasceneofthegreatestterror.The lightningwithaterriflecrashstruckthe OrphanageBuildingandtearingoffaportion oftheroofrusheddownwardstotheSchoolroomandRefectorycrackingthewallsand breakingthewindowsanddour-fratitesinits course.TwoboysintheRefectorywere violentlystruckandoneofthem,afinelad ofabout14yearsofagenamedFrancis Burnswasinstantaneouslykilled,theother escapedwithasevereshock.Severalother inmatesoftheOrphanagewerestunnedand knockeddownbytheforceoftheelectric currentbutotherwisenotseriouslyinjured. ThefuneraloftheunfortunateboyBurns, willtakeplaceat11o'clockthismorningat Subiaco.

Thereasonableandjudiciousadoptionofacorrespondingplaniswhatis wantedforCatholics.Thereisno necessityforustoresorttotheridiculoussystemofputtinginprintanaccountofeverypettytransaction.For, withusthereiseveranimmense amountofsolidandimportantworkof areligiouscharactertobenoticed. Therearealwaysimperishabletruths tobepublishedandaneverfailingcrop offalsehoodandealumnytoberebutted. TodosoisthetaskoftheCatholic press,buttosucceedinitsimportant officethatpressshouldhavetireearnest andunitedsupportoftheCatholic body.

Weshouldlike,then,Catholicsto learnalessonfromsomeoftheProtestantsectsfromopponentswhodespite theirinsignificanceyetmakeanoisein theworldbecausetheyuselargelythe press.WeshouldlikeeveryCatholic toutiliseandmaintainhisownpaperas ameansforhisownsocialamelioration

Itisabovesucha:arms.Undoubtedlyitis passingthroughacrisisto-day-negation anddoubt,philosophic,scientific,historic, assailitoneveryside,andinagreatnumber ofsoulsfaithlanguishesorwavers.Aslong asthiscrisisshalllast,Christianitywilldefenditselfmainlybyitsmoralbeautyandits socialutility;thisisarampartwithwhich itisalreadyacquainted,andunderwhose shelterithasmorethanonceretiredinthe daysofintellectualstorm.Butthestorm willpassaway,ashasoccurredmorethan oncealready,andtheChristianlightwill regain,farabovethecloudsheapedupby thehandofman,itslustreanditssway. Thisfutureiswritteninthehistoryofthe past."

Notimemustbelostbythosewhodesireto gainthespiritualadvantagesoftheJubilee proclaimedbythePopeintheApostolic Letterswepublishinourpresentissue.

DR.NEWMAN.-Ithasbeenmadepublic thatHisHolinesslatelyexpressedadesireto enrolDr.NewmanamemberoftheSacred CollegeofCardinals.Thelatestintelligence onthesubjectinformsusthatthehonorhas beendeclinedonaccountofDr.Newman's greatage-78years-TheprincipalLondon journalshaveallhadtheirsayinthematter, andtheretiringandsensitiveOratorian,has hadthemortificationofbeingmadethe subjectofmuchpubliccomment,andof manyapainfulremark.TheseProtestant journalswhilepraisinghimforhiemany eminentqualities,yetlabourhardtofixon Dr.Newmanthestimaofbeingonly"half aCatholic."Notwithstandingthathehas alwaystakentheforemostplaceofbattlein everyemergencyagainsttheenemiesofthe Churchnotwithstandingthathehasdealt

theheaviestblowstotheGreatProtestant Error,andwonoverfromitsranksmore Convertsthananyotherlivingman-they persiststillinrepeatingthatheisnota loyalCatholic.Andstrangerstill,thisis saidoverandoveragainbywayofpraise. Itisremarkablethatwhateverissaidofthe VenerableOratorianitisinvariablyinpraise andcommendation.Noonehasanevil wordofhim.Hisvirtuesareadmiredby all.Hishumilityindecliningthehonor intendedisasubjectofuniversalregret. ProtestantsandCatholicsalikeassenttothe remarkoftheSaturdayReview-"Itisa pitythatthegreatestEnglishmansincethe Reformationwhohassharedthefaithof Wolsey,FisherandPoleshouldnotinherit theirmantle."

PROBLEMS.-Withaviewtotesting-the capabilitiesofouryouthfulreaders,andfor theirimprovementwepurposeinsertingin ourcolumnsfromtimetotimesomearithmeticaloralgebraicalproblem,solutionofwhich willbethankfullyreceivedfromthosewho maywishtoexercisetheirknowledgeofthe "scienceofnumber"byendeavoringtosolve them.Weintendfollowingthiscourseas weseethatitwillprobablyinducesome youngmentoapplytheirmindsoccasionally toasubjectmostusefultpall,butwhichat presentreceivesverylikeitynoshareoftheir attentionatall.To-daywesubmitthesubjoinedproblemrequestingthattheauthorsof solutionswillforwardthesametouswith theirnamesattached(thelatterforpublication)intimeforournextissue:-Alady beingonceoutdrivingincompanywitha coupleoffemalefriends,chancedtopassan orchardteemingwiththechoicestfruit.A tree,ladenwithmostbeautifulapples,attractedherparticularattentionandshe desiredhermaidtoexpresstotheownerher desiretohaveoneforherselfandthesame foreachofhercompanions.Themaidproceededatoncetocomplywiththewishof hermistress.Onarrivingatthegateand acquaintingaservantwhomshemetthere withtheobjectofhervisitherefusedheradmissiontothegardenunlessshepromisedto givehimonherreturn,thehalfoftheapples shewouldthenhave,andhalfanapplebesides.Havingconsentedtodothisonconditionofobtainingthepermissionofthe owner,shewasallowedtoenter,andwas directedtowardswhereshemightfindhim. Atanearlyhourvisitorsbegantopassin fromthecountryandadjacenttownsofYork andNewcastle.Thegreateventoftheday wastobetheopeningofthenewChurchof St.Joseph.Longbeforetheappointedtime forthecommencementoftheceremony 09.30a.m.).alargeconcourseofpeoplein holidayattire,wereassembledroundthe building.TheVeryRev.CanonMartelli, assistedbytheRev.A.Bourke,firstwalked inprocessionroundtheChurchrecitingthe 141iserere,&c.Afewsecondsafterthedoors wereopenedltheLbuilding'iwasdensely crowded,morethanhalfhacrtoremainoutsidealldenominationsweredulyrepresented. TheplacewhereSt.Peter'sstandsis memorablefortwothings.According tothetraditionsoftheRomanChurch, theapostlePeter,afterhiscrucifixion .ontheJaniculum,washereinterred.

Thiswasalsothesiteofthecircusof Nero,andthefoundationoftheseatsof thetyrant'splaceofpublicamusement nowformsthefoundationofthesouth wallofthechurch.

ThehistoryofthesiteanditsconnectionwiththeburialofS.Peterruns thus:"OvertheplaceofS.Peter's burialanoratorywaserected,A.D.106, byAnacletus,fifthBishopofRome. Thisoratorycontinueduntilthetimeof Constantine,who,atthesuggestionof PopeSylvester,foundedabasilicainits stead,whichwasconsecratedonthe 18thofNovember,A.D.324.Earlyin thefifteenthcenturytheConstantinian structurewasfoundmenacingruin,and thethenreigningPopedecidedtoreplaceitbyanotherandmoremagnificentstructure."

TheworkwasbegunbyNicholasV. intheyear1450,andwascontinued untilitsdedicationbyUrban A.D.1626-requiring,therefore,one hundredandtwenty-sixyearstocompletethebuilding.Theworkofits erectioncontinuedthroughthereignof twenty-eightPopes.Inthedirectionof theworktherewereemployedat varioustimesfifteenarchitects;among thesewasthegreatmaster,Michael Angelo.Thecolonnades,whichcannot beleftoutinestimatingthewhole structure,andthesacristy,anotherimportantfeatureofthebasilica,required amuchlongerspaceoftimefortheir construction.Thewholecoversa periodofthreehundredandthirty-four years,andthereareyetmanythings thatareregardedasunfinished.

Therehavebeenexpendedoverfifty millionsofdollarsalreadyinthebuilding,andthisamountexclusiveofthe models,bell-towers,mosaicpictures, sacristy,etc.Whatthetotalcostof thechurchanditsattachmentshave beenIfailedtoascertain.Itrequires overthirtythousanddollarsperyearto keepitinrepair.Theroofhasonita numberofresidenceswherethoseemployedindoingthemeniallabourabide.

Youwillfindthereasmallvillageof poorlabourers,whosesolesupport comesfromtheirwagesforrepairs,etc., uponthisonegreatedifice.

ThedimensionsareasfollowsThe facadeis3741feetinbreadth,and415 inheight.Thisfrontisoramentedby eighttravertinecolumns,whichare eachfeetindiameter,and,including baseandcapital,are93feetinheight. Uponthesummitarethirteenstatues representingChirst,S.JohntheBaptist,andtheapostles,exceptPeter Theinteriorofthechurchis619feet inlength,measuringfromthedoorto theendofthetribune,andthewidth alongthetranseptsis449.

Stoppingbeforehavinggone fromtheentranceyoushouldtakea fullsurveyoftheinside,andtryat leasttoconceiveofitsimmensity. Therearerowsofcolumnsalongon eachsideofthenave,butthefour columnsthatsupportthedomefirstattractedmyattention.Theseimmense pillars,ofwhichIhavereadbefore, werefifty-fivefeetsquareatthebase, andlookinguponthemfromnearthe frontentranceIwaspreparedtoassert mostpositivelythatthismustbeamistake.ButIwentdirectlytothem, measuredthesizebypaces,andby comparisonwithotherobjects,estimatedthesizewithmyeye,andthenconsultedtherecordsandhadtosurrender. Theydidnotseemoutofproportion, nordidtheyseemtoolargetosupport thatdome,theinternaldiameterofthe cupolaofwhichis1411feet.

Whileleaningagainstoneofthose pillars,andreadingalittleofthedescriptionandmeasurementsinmyguidebook,IobservedthebronzestatueofS. Peter,whoseextendedfootisconsiderablywornbythefrequentkissesofthe devoutworshippersofsaintsandimages.

Iwasanxioustoknowifpeoplereally didkissthefootofthatstatue.Isoon hadocularproofthattherewasno mistake,foraladyapproached,kneeled reverentlybeforeit,andtakingfrom herpocketahandkerchief,shbcarefully wipedthefootandaffectionatelykissed it.Thencameamanwhowasequplly carefulintheuseofhishandkerchief beforehislipstouchedit.Afew momentsafterquiteanumberofpoorlycladpersons,whohadbeenkneelingin variouspartsofthechurch,cametothe statueandimpressed,withgood,round, audiblesmacks,theirkisses.The nextladywhocameusedanelegant lacehandkerchief,andhavingwiped thewholefoot,kisseditneartheinstep;andthisperformancewascontinuedatintervalsallthetimewewere there,onthisandallsubsequent visits.

Thisstatuestandsagainstthelast pilasterontherightofthenave,asyou standfacingthetribune.Itis,therefore,nearthehighaltar,infrontofand beneathwhichisthe"Confession"of S.Peter.Adoubleflightofstairs leadsdowntothisshrine.Herebehind richly-ornamentedgiltbronzegatesthe remainsoftheapostlearesaidtorepose.
