sistentrefusalcontinuousinvitationsto jointheNihilists;hehadfurtherwrittentohisfather,tellinghimofthepersecutiontowhichhewasbeingsubjected, andbeggingtoberemovedashislife wasindanger.Thefather,aPolish smallproprietoroftheGovernmentof Volhynia,arrivedatOdessa,purposing totakeawayhisson.Buthewasa daytoolate.Theboyhadbeenstabbed todeaththedayprevioustohisfather's arrival.Again,withrespecttotheattemptedassassinationofBaronDrenteln afewdaysagoinSt.Petersburg,itis knownthathereceivedsometimeago aletterwarninghimofthefateintended forhim.Theletteraddedthat,asit wasgenerallybelievedbedidnotfear death,hewouldbestruckatthrough hisdaughter,forwhomhewasknown tocherishthedeepestaffection.Itis probablythatGeneralDreutelnwillfall likehisimmediatepredecessorMesentsoff;whowasmurderedlastAugust.

Averyseriouscaseofstabbingisre, portedbytheCouriertohaveoccurred attheLoganonthe10thinst.From agentlemanwhoarrivedfromBeenleigh thesamenightthatjournallearntthe followingparticularsoftheaffair:-"It appearsthat,about9a.m.,theRev. FatherScortechini,thevictimofthe assault,wassittinginaroomathie residence,CapraVale,LoganRiver, withamannamedSamuelM'Goldrick, whenthelatteraskedforasettlement inconnectionwithhisbrother'swill,of whichtherev.gentlemanisanexecutor. Thedemandwasrefused,whereupon M'Goldrick,sayinghere'satyou, then,'stabbedtheotherwithaknife betweenthefifthandsixthrib.Mr. Plunketthavingtakenthenewsto Beenleigh,thepolicemagistrate(Mr. Rankin)andDr.Fonsworthproceeded tothesceneoftheoutrage,while ConstablesQuinlanandMoylanstarted inpursuitoftheperpetratorofthedeed. M'GoldriekwasarrestedatLogan Village,andconductedtothepriest's residence,wherethelatter'sdeposition wastakeninhispresence,afterwhich hewasremandedtoBeenleigh,tobe broughtupthereonMondaynext.The latestinformationconcerningthesufferer istotheeffectCelt,althoughthewound isaveryseriousone,noimmediate dangerisapprehendedfromit."The samejournalonthe14thinst.,publishes thissupplementarystatement:-"CertainrumoursveryinjurioustotheRev. OnthenightofThursday,March27, anotherpoliticalmurderwasperpetrated inthemostdaringmannerinMoscow. AcertainM.Batynskywashavinga sortofeveningparty,atwhichayoung man,22yearsold,namedBairashevskij, thesonofverywealthyparentsnear \Vilna,waspresent.Aboutnineo'clock ayounglady,Mlle.Katschka,arrived atthehouse,andinquiredforthehost. Shewasacquaintedwithsomeofthe personspresent,andwasinvitedtojoin theparty.Shedidse,anduponenteringtheroomwheretheguestswere assembledshecarefullylookedaround anddrawingarevolverfromherpocket shotBairashevskijdeadonthespot. Thenhandingtherevolvertothe nearestpersonshesaidshe"submitted toherfaith."Shehasrefusedtogive anyexplanationofherdeed,contenting herselfwithsayingshewasobligedto doit.ShecomesfromOrenberg,is19 yearsold,andiswellknownforherremarkablebeauty.Thepolicehavediscoveredthatshehadonlyjustarrived fromSt.Pctersbergwhenshepresented herselfatthehouseofM.Batynsky, andtheysurmisethatthemurderwas £rderedbytherevolutionarychiefs there.Thevictimhadbeenformerlya studentintheTechnologicalSchoolat Moscow.HewasburiedonthefollowingSunday.Itisremarkablethatvery fewpersonsattendedhisfuneral,and amongthosepresenttherewerenoneof hisformercomrades.Thisgoestoconfirmthesuspicionthatthemurderwas political.

Alltheinformationwhichreaches WesternEuropegoestoshowthatwith eachfreshoutrage,theaudacityandinfluenceoftheNihilistsincrease,and likewisethepanicofoutsiders,especially amongofficials.Aboutfourweeksago amurderwascommittedinaninnat Moscow,sonicofthemysteriouscircumstancesofwhichhaveonlylately Leenallowedtoleakout.Inaroom, whichhadnotbeenopenedforsome days,thebodyofamurderedmanwas founduponhisbackwasacardon whichwaswritten"Traitor,spy, judgedandexecutedbyus,theRussian SocialistsandRevolutionists.Deathto theJudasesandtraitors."According totheMoskowaGazettethemurdereris astudent.HewasresidinginMoscow onanEnglishpassport.Hefled;but allhiseffectsweresecured,andovera hundredpersonsarrestedonsuspicion ofbeing,atleast,accomplices.About afortnightago,aboy,only17years old,whowasastudentintheOdessa Gymnasium,wasmurderedbyhis fellowstudents.Hisoffencewasa doubleone.Hehadmetwithapee-

Itisfurtherreportedthatthejudges whoaretotryFomin,theNihilist leaderwhoischargedwiththelateassassinationinCharkoff,havereceived, threateningletters;andthepresident ofthecourthasbeenactuallyfiredatas hewasenteringhisownresidence.

Thepriestwhoactsaschaplainofthe centralprisoninCharkoffhasdeclared thatoutofthefivehundredprisoners confinedtheretwohundredhavedied withinthelustfourmonths.Thisexactlycoincideswithoneofthechief complaintsoftheNihilists.Theydeclarethatthepoliticalprisonersareso brutallytreatedwhileinconfinement thattheirhealthcompletelybreaks dowu,andfrequentlytheirreasongives way.

AnImposterUnmasked.

Mr.Longsaidthatheneverstood uponaplatformwithastrongerfeeling ofanxietyanddistressthanonthat occasion,andheaskedthemeetingto bearwithhimwhileheendeavouredto explainthemostpainfulpositionin whichhefoundhimself.Mr.Widdows camelastyeartothehallAndatthe closeoftheproceedingsintroduced himselfasapersonwhohadrenounced theerrorsofRomeandembracedthe truthsofProtestantism.Mr.Longacceptedtheman'sstatement,aud,as waswellknown,Mr.Widdowsaddressedanumberofmeetingstowards theendoflastyearinGlasgow,andhe hailnodoubtmostofthesepresenthad heardtheaddresses.Subsequentlyhe tookMr.Widdowsbeforethecloseof theyeartoDundee.Thereasonhe introducedWiddowstothepublicof GlasgowandDundeewastheextremely strongtestimonialsthathepossessed. HeonanotheroccasionwrotetoMr. Widdows,andinvitedhimbacktoGlasgow.Mr.Widdowsaccepted,and receivedthehospitalityofMr.Long's ownrooffortwomonths.Uponhis secondreturntoDundeethedisturbancesoccurredofwhichsomuchmentionhadbeenmadeinthenewspapers Thenthereappearedthecorrespondence betweenhim(Mr.Long)andDr. Glancy,theCatholicclergyman, formerlyofPatrick,butnowatMotherwell,andeventuallythatgentleman challengedhimthatthestatementin Mr.Widdows'pamphletthathismother haddedicatedhinttotheVirginand givenhimtothemonksofElmhill Monasterywasnottrue,andDr. Glancyundertooktoforfeit£50should itbeprovedtherewasaCatholic monasteryinthattown.He(Mr. Long)thoughtithisdutytodefend Mr.Willows,andbelievinginhis veracityheacceptedthedoctor'schallenge.liehadsincecorrespondedwith trustworthypersonsinNorwich,and hadreceivedtheinformationthatMr. WiddowshadneverbeeninaCatholic monasteryinNorwich.Hehadindeed beenintheAnglicanmonasteryof FatherIgnatius,afterwhichhewent totheContinent,wherehebecamea Catholic.Mr.Widdowshadtherefore deceivedhim,sothathe(Mr.Long)at oncemadearrangementstoimplement hiscompactwithDr.Glancyandhad paidthe£50(applause).IlehadtelegraphedandwrittentoMr.Widdows inDundeeearnestlyrequestinghimto furnishsomeproofwhichwouldjustify himtocontinuehisconfidenceinMr. Widdows;buttheanswershehadreceivedfloutMr.Widdowsweremost unsatisfactoryanddidnotcontaina singlefragmentofjustificationofthe statement.Sofarfromthat,Mr.Widdows,hadstatedthathewasgoingon theContinentimmediatelyanddidnot intendtocometoGlasgowatall.The conclusionhe(Mr.Long)hadtherefore cometowasthatMr.Widdowswasa mostunreliableperson-was,infact,an absoluteliar(applause).Headdedthat hehadcometothatconclusionasto Mr.Widdows'characterapartaltogether fromthegravechargewhichhadrecentlybeenmadeagainsthim.

TheCatholicTimesgivesthefollowingaccountofthecompleteexposurebyonewhohadbeenhisgreatestadvocate-ofaShamMonk,named Widdows,whoforsometime,wentThemeetingsympathizedwithMr. aboutvarioustownsinScotlandgivingLong,andpassedaresolutiondeclaring

T seemstobenoendtoMr. Fro apeculikrtrippings,bywhich hetinhappilystu (Isovertheboundary fhistoryintofatsbite.FatherBurke inAmericaliftedhimupfro&several ofthese,inmattersconnectedwithIrelandandtheIrish.Mr.Freemanhas sincethatfoundhimflounderingina quagmireofuntruthrespectingSt. ThomasofCanterbury,haspickedhim outofit,givenhithagoodshakingfor beingsoheedlessormischievous,arid sethimonhislegsagain;andnow anotherwriter,Mr.LouisWeisener,has detectedhimathisusualperversity.It isahabitofMr.Froudetofeignremote andlittleknownauthoritiesforhis peculiarstatements.A.referenceto somebookonsomeshelfinsomeforeign andnotmuchfrequentedlibraryor archive,withoutspecialreferenceto bookorshelf,givesanairofresearch tohiswritings,andmakesiteasierfor hiscriticstoallowmanyofhisstatementstopassunnoticedintocommon acceptanceratherthantocontradict thembyappealtohispretendedsources ofinformation.Nowandthenheis foundout.OneoftheprevailingestimatesofthecharacterofQueenMary ofEngland,asgivenbyherfoes,isthat ofmorose,melancholy,jealous,andrevengefuldisposition.Ithadbegunto befoundoutthatthisestimatewasthe resultofthepolemicalrancourofthe Reformingpartyofthesixteenthand followingcentury,andamorejusthistoricalresearchhasbeguntoplaces Mary'scharacterinamorefavourable light.ButMr.Froude"totherescue" ofthegreattraditionallie.Hepretends todiscoveracontemporaryauthority, andindeedherownacknowledgmentof thisevildisposition,madetooneofthe ambassadorsathercourt.Heaffects todiscoverthisinthemanuscriptcorrespoudeuceoftheambassadorRenard, whereheismadetosaythatshehad toldhimthattheexecutionofCranmer, whichwassoontotakeplace,was alreadyrelievingherofthatmelancholy whichhadweigheduponherfrom childhood,thatitwasnowrollingaway, thatshehadneverknownthemeaning ofhappiness,andthatsitewasaboutto berewardedatlast.Mr.Froude's confidentword,supportedbyareference totwovolumeswhichfeweversawof manuscriptcorrespondenceinhisvol. 6p.123,gavearenewedsanctiontothe dyinglibel,andmadeMr.Froudelook learned.ArecentFrenchwriter,M. LouisWeisener,hasmadetheyouth ofQueenElizabeth"thesubjectofa book.Inthishesays,"Afterrepeated referencetothemanuscriptweassert thatinthisdespatchofRenard'sof17th Novemberthereisnotasiugleoneof thewcrdsthatrepresenther(Mary)as beingmadedebasedanddetestableby revenge.Theonlysentenceconcerning Cramerinthedespatchisthis-'L'on estaprespourexecuterlasentence renduecentrel'EvesquedeCanterbury.' Althoughwehavemostminutely searchedthetwovolumesofmanuscripts containingthecorrespondenceofthe Imperialambassador,wehavenotsucceededindiscoveringthequotation takenfromthembyMr.Froude."So muchthenforMr.Froudeasahistorian,andsomuchforagreatpartof "Englishhistory"*henittreatsof Catholics.Itisfromsuchwritiag-as thisthatsowronglyconceivedideasof thecharactersofthepastgetpossession ofthemindsofevenCatholicsthemselves.-CatholicTimes.

AnentthissubjectourFremantleCorrespondentwrites:-Itiswithmingledpainand satisfactionthatIproposesendingyouabrief accountoftheproceedingsintheOddfellows' hallon'Wednesdayeveninglast,onwhich occasionMessrs.PearseandMarmionaddressedtheirconstituentsrelativetothe coursepursuedbyeachinthelastsessionof theCouncil.andtheviewstheyentertained tinmatterslikelytoengagetheattentionof theCouncilatitsnextsession.-tobeopened onMonday.Thatthemeetingconvened voluntarilybyourrepresentativesfortheobjectsabovespecifiedshouldhaveassumed thecharacterofWednesday'smeeting.was notquiteunexpected.Mr.Marmionhad,it appears.renderedhimselfexceedinglyunpopularbyyotingintheCouncilfortheintroductionofCoolies.andbyopposingthe motioninfavourofResponsibleGovernment. Christianfaithteachesustolookupon thislifeasbutapreparationforthenext. Itgivesustheassurancethatwhendeath stripsusofellelseofgood,ourmeritsshall gowithusbeyondthegraveandclingtous forourgloryineternity.Ithasbeenour endeavorpatientlytoexplorethecourseof thatphenomenonoftheNewLaw,foreshadowedbythemiracleofAaron'sstaff. Judgmentandjustice,likecharity, beginathome:andbeforetheycommiserateculpritstwothousandmiles away,theywoulddowelltofeelsome shameatvictimsoftheirownmaking. ThehorrorsIhavebeendescribingare noanomalyinthehistoryofProtestantism.Wh'itevertheoreticaldifferences ithashadonthissubjectwiththe CatholicReligion,ithas,inmatterof fact,evershownitselfapersecuting power.IthaspersecutedinEngland, inScotland,inIreland,inHolland,in France,inGermany,inGeneva.Calvin burntaSocinian,CranmeranAnabaptist,Lutheradvisedthewholesale murderofthefanaticalpeasants,and Knoxwaspartytobloodyenactments andbloodydeeds.Youwouldthink thatwithscandalssuchastheseattheir door,Protestantswouldfinditsafestto lethistoryalone,andnotmeddlewith thequestionofpersecutionatall,from alivelyconsciousnessofdeedsidentical withthosewhichtheyimputetothe CatholicChurch.Notabitofit. Whatthenistheirviewofthematter? Strangetosay,theymakeittheirplea ofexculpation,andtheactualdifference betweenCatholicsandthem,thatthey condemnpersecutiononprinciple;in otherwords,theybringtheirowninconsistencyastheexcusefortheircrime. NowIgrantthem,Iamfarfromdisputingit,thatamanwhoholdsaright principle,andoccasionally,nayoften, offendsagainstit,isbetterthanhewho holdstheoppositewrongprinciple,and actsconsistentlyuponit;butthatis notthepresentcase.Thecasebefore usisthatofpersonswhoneveronce haveactedontheprincipletheyprofess -neveroncefortheycannotproduce theirinstance,whenProtestants,of whateverdenomination,wereinpossessionofnationalpowerforanysufficient time,withoutpersecutingsortieorother oftheirpolemicalantagonists.kloit hasbeen,soitisnow.Threecenturies agoProtestantisminEnglandsetoffon itscoursewithmurderingCatholic priests;onlyafewmonthshavepassed sinceaclergymanoftheEstablishment gaveouttohiscongregationthat transportationwastoogoodforus,and hethoughtwealloughttobeputto death.SofarfromtheProtestant partyfeelinganyrealshockatthis axonal,alittlewhileafter,asecond clergyman,asinfluentialinManchester asthefirstmentionedisin Liverpool,repeatedthesentiment;and stillnoshockorsensationintheProtestantpublicwastheresult.Doubtlesstheygavetheirreasonsforwishing it,sufficientintheirownjudgment,and sotoodidtheProtestantElizabeth,so toodidGardinerandtheotheradvisers oftheCatholicMary;butstillsuch wastheupshotoftheirreasons,deathto everyCatholicpriest.Thepresentcase thenisnotthatofanindividual,ora ruler,orabodypoliticlayingdowna goodprinciple,andnotbeingableat timesandundercircumstances,through passionorpolicy,toactuptoit;no,itisthecaseofareligionsayingone thing,andoneveryactualendpossible occasiondoinganother.Cansuchareligionextenuateitsactsontheground ofitsprofessions?Yetthisistheexcuse,nay,thisistheboast,theglory, oftheProtestantparty:-"Wealways doonething,andwealwayssayanother; wealwayspreachpeace,butwealways makewarwehavethefaceofalamb, andtheclawsofadragon.Andwe haveanotherboast;tobesure,WO persecute,butthen,asasetoff,you see,wealwaysdenounceinotherswhat weareinthepracticeofdoingourselves; thisisoursecondgreat virtue.,Observe,we,persecutors,protestagainstpersecution,-virtueone; next,we,persecutors,blackenandcurse

AndnowImightleaveProtestantsto explainthismatteriftheycan,andto unravelthemysteryhowitisthat,after alltheirsolemnwordsagainstpersecution,theyhavepersecled,asIhave shown,whenever,wherever,andhowevertheycould,fromElizabethdownto Victoria,fromthedomesticcircleupto theLegislature,fromblacklookstothe extremityofthegibbetandthestake; Imightleavethem,butIamtempted tomakethemonepartingsuggestion. Iobserve,then,itisnoaccidentthat theyuniteintheirhistorythisabjuration withthispracticeofreligiouscoercion; thetwogotogether.Isayitboldly anddecidedly,anddonotflinchfrom theavowal-Protestantsattempttoo much,andtheyendindoingnothing. Theygotoofartheyattemptwhatis againstnature,andthereforeimpossible.Iamnotprovingthisitisa separatesubject;itwouldrequirea treatise.IamonlytellingtheProtestantworldwhyitistheyeverpersecute, inspiteoftheirprofessions.Itis becausetheirdoctrineofprivatejudgmer.t,astheyholdit,isextremeand unreal,andnecessarilyleadstoexcesses intheoppositedirection.Theyare attemptingtoreversenature,withno warrantfordoingso;aridnaturehas itsamplerevengeuponthem.They altogetherignoreaprinciplewhichthe Creatorhasputintoourbreasts,the dutyofmaintainingthetruth;and,in consequence,theydeprivethemselves oftheopportunityofcontrollieg,restraining,anddirectingit.Sowasit withtheactorsinthefirstFrench Revolution:neverweretheresuch extravagantpraisesoftherightsof reasonneversosignal,sohortiblea profanationofthem.Theycrii.d, "Liberty,Equality,Fraternity,"and thenproceededtomassacrethepriests, andtohurrythelaitybythousandsto thescaffoldortheriver-side.
