TheZalasandtheBritish]eompaniedbyaccurategeographical Frontiers.. knowledge,.anincompleteandalmost meaninglesspursuit.Andthisisstrikinglythecasew..enthecurrentevents ofourowntimes,butindistantlands, havetobestudiedastheyarebrought dailyunderournoticethroughthe agencyofaworld-widepress.Our viewoftheseinparticularroustbe feebleandpurblindindeedunlessthe locusinquobeclearanddefinedinthe mentalvision.

Inoldentimesmenknewlittleof geography,butdidnotneedit.Atthe presenttimeagreatmanypeopleareas ignorantofitasweretheirforefathers, andyetweliveintimeswhennoone canevenpretendthatheisabletodo withoutit.Thedayhasgonebyfor everyBritishsubject,whenhecould withoutprospectofinterruptionsettle downforlifeinthelocalityofhisbirth, andseewithinaday'swalkeverymemberofhisfamily,everykinsman,and everymanhecaredtocallhisfriend.

Andhehascreptimperceptiblyintothe positionofaninhabitantofanalmost world-wideempire,withthechanceever hangingoverhisheadthatheorthose nearesttotdm tAddeubythe sterncommandofcircumstancestohurry atamoment'snoticetoitsfarthestextremities.Indeedtomany,perhaps,to most,hasthemandatelongagocome, andparentsandchildren,evenhusbands andwives,areasfarapartasarethe poles.Yetstilltheyhavehopeofmeetingagainuponsomespotofearth,and thaterelong.For,thethousandand onesayingsandproverbswhichgoto illustratethetruththatthereisnoevil withoutitsblessing,nosorewithoutits cure,areapplicableinmanywaysto theachievementsofmoderncivilisation. Thesamepowerwhichscatterssowidely re-unitesasswiftly;theverytyrant thatwoundsheartscomessomedayor anothertohealthem;ifonlytheyhave notmeanwhilebroken.

Theseandmanysimilarthoughts uponthenecessityandutility:ofgeographicalknowledgeatatimelikethe present,whenthereishardlyoneofour nationwithoutarelativeorfriendin somedistantquarteroftheglobe,come withredoubledforcewhensuchworks astheoneundernoticearebrought beforeus,andwehavetosetourselves tothetaskofusingit-withsomeothers -tobringthecountriesofSouthAfrica 89nearlyaspossibleunderthevery eyesofourreader.;allormostofwhom mustperforcelookwithinterest,ifnot anxiety,forsometimetocomeupon thesehithertoalmostunknownregions.

Butthenativepopulationisfarmore sparse.

Physicallytherearebuttwodivisions ofthevastterritoryone,anextensive upland,some5,000feetabovethelevel ofthesea,andenclosedbetweenthe greatKarabarideserttothenorth,and theNatalandZulumountainrangesof DrakenebergandLydenbergtothesouth andeast;theother,NatalandZululand, slopingandpicturesquetracts,between thesemountainsandthesea,varyingin breadthfrom90to130miles.

OftheOrangeFreeStatenothing needbesaidhere.OftheTransvaal thereismuchtodiscussandtodescribe, batwemustreserveitforafuturepaper. EvenNatalmusthepassedbyforthe present,foroursubjectforthemoment isZululandalone.

Butwethinkitwillbemoreagreeabletothegeneralreaderif,discarding anydetailedcriticismoftheveryable mannerinwhichtheauthorbasaccomplishedhispurposeofsettingbeforeus richmaterialsforthestudyofZulu geographyandhistory,wemakeuseof hislaboursandthoseofotherworkers inthesamefieldtoenableustogivea briefsummaryoffactsastoournew acquisitionsandneighboursinSouth Africa.

Forsometimetocomethen,atany rate,thatportionofSouthAfricawhich liesalmosttothesouthandquitetothe east,andwhichincludesthewhole territoryoftheTransvaal,theOrange FreeState,Natal(includingKaffraria), andZululand,mustoccupytheattention ofeveryeducatedEnglishman.And, tomaketheunknownknownbymeans ofthewell-known,wemayremarkthe coincidenceofthegeneralsimilitudeof relativesituationbetweenthesefour Statesandthefourgreatprovincesof Ireland.TheTransvaaltothenorth remindsusofUlster;theOrangeFree Statetothewest,ofConnaught;Natal withBasutolandtothesouth,ofMunster; andZululandtothenorth-east,ofLeinster.

Poetsandpaintersbeartestimonyto thepowerefassociationofplace.And therearefewtowhosepersonalexperiencethistestimonydoesnotcome homeastrue.Theytenchushow fopdlyloveclingsto"alocalhabitation andaname,"conjuringupbyfancy's means%Intactualknowledgefailsto impart.Fancymustnecessarilyplay somepartwhereverthecaseisoneof friendsdwellingwherewehavenever actuallybeenourselves.Butfancy baseduponcertainsubstrataoftruthis infinitelymorecapableofsatisfyingthe soulthanfancywantonandetlarge, which"likethebaselessfabricofa vision"maymomentarilypleaseand excite,butoflastingwholesaleheartfood"leavesnotawrackbehind."And foreverydiligentseekerthesesubstrataareeasytobefound.Forthere arefewspotsoftheinhabitedglobeto whichskilledgeographershavenot pavedthewayofknowledgeforour feet,ofthefar-offdearoneswhodwell withinthem.Thereishardlyaspot aboutwhichwemaynotlearnwithout trouble,travelorexpense,everythingof interestsavethedomesticand"home" incidents,whichanothergloryofcivilisation,thepostalservice,willswiftly carryinwordsandtonewhichnothing canequalorreplace.

Nexttophotographoffaceandhabitation,thereisnothingthatcanimpart interestandsolacetoabsentrelatives andfriendssoabundantasagoodmap ofthelocalitiesinwhichdearones dwell;nothingthatbetterencourages andsustainsincontinuancethosedeliciousminutesofcorrespondencethatkeep warmandbright,affectionswhichtime anddistancesoinsidiouslytendto dampenandtochill;nothingthatcan throwvitalityintonarrative,furnish groundworkforeverypicture,andgive realitytoeverysituation,betterthanthe geographicalknowledgeofallsurroundingswhichbooksandtheresultsof accuratesurvey,placeateveryone's disposal.Yetitissurprisingandsad tofindwithwhatcoldneglectthe bounteousofferis,notsomuchrejected, assimplyneglected.Onlythehighly educatedfewhaveajustideaofthe valueoftheoffer,andavailthemselves totit.Toteachthistothemultitude whoknowitnotwouldbetoconfera boonuponthem,andasourceoffresh encouragementtothose,who,likeour author,areatmuchtroubleandexpense togivetotheworldtheresultsoftheir travelsandresearches.

OfthesefourNatalhasbeenoursin partsince1843,andtotallyandpeaceablyourssince1848.TheTransvaal hasbeenoursfortwoshortyears.The OrangeFreeStateisnotoursnow,but isfriendlyandatpeace.Zululandisnot oursasyet,andisatwarwithus.All thesefourStatesareinhabitedmainly bytheKaffirrace,andtheproportionof Europeansisexceedinglysmallevenin Natal.Natalneveryethad25,000 Europeaninhabitants.Noristhereany signthatanyportionofSouthAfrica willeverbecomeaBritishcolony,such asAmerica,asAustralia,asCanada, andasNewZealandhavebecome.In Natal,forexample,thefewEnglishlive inthreeorfourofthetownsbythem. selves;thefewDutchmeuwhodidnot migratenorthwardstotheTransvaalor OrangeFreeStatewhenwefirsttook possessionofNatal,dwellintheirfarms upthecountry;therearesomeHindoo cooliesonthecoastplantation;andsome 150,000Zulusoccupytherestofthe province,besidesasmanymoreoftheir swarthykinsmentothesouthin Kaffraria.ThisZuluoraboriginal populationhasbeenmuchincreased duringthelastthirtyyearsbyrefugees drivenfromZululandbythecrueloperationofthemarriageandconscription lawsstillinvogue.Forcedmarriage undertheKing'sdirections,forcedeilitarylife,andlongservice,havesenttens ofthousandsofZulumenandwomen intotheneighbouringBritishterritory, andminglingbymeansofunrestricted marriagewiththeremnantsoftheold tribes,haveinashorttimebrought aboutthedangerousdisparityinpointof numbersbetweennativesandEuropeans whichmusteverbeasourceofanxiety totheresponsibleauthoritiesofour ColonialOffice.

Thisterritoryissituate,then,onthe IndianOceantotheeastandsouth-east, withNatalonitssouth-westandwestern border,andtheTransvaalpartlyonits westernandnorthernfrontier.Theremainderofitsnorthernfrontierbrings itintocontactwiththetiwanzis'country andthecoastaltrinesofAmatonga.It isexceedinglyweltwatered,andthe well-knownriverTugelaformstheboundarylinebetweenZululandandNatal tothesouth-east.Speakingroughly Zululandmaybedescribedasalarge equilateraltriangle,withaidesofabout 150miles-oneofthem,thehae,being onthesea-coast,andrunningalmost northandsouthfrontPortSordwartato themouthoftheTugela;asecondrunningnorth-westlimnthemouthofthe Tugela,withNatalandapartofthe Transvaalonitsborders,untilatthe apex,nutfarfromUtrecht,itmeetsthe thirdside,runningeastandwest,borderedbyanotherportionoftheTransvaalandnativetribes.Almostinthe centreofthetriangleisUlundi,the capital,orKing'schiefkraal.Forthis pointourtroopsareatpresentmaking, fromabaserepresentedbythesecond orwesternsideofthetriangle,upon whichthemouthoftheTugelawould representoneend,theTransvaalboniertownofUtrechttheother,andRorke's Driftthecentre.Theclimateissemitropical.Byfarthegreaterpartofthe countryisroughandunbroken,with thousandsofacresofbushandanextensivelakeoffreshwateroccupies almostthewholeofthenorth-east corner.Riversandmountainsabound andthevarietiesofclimate,asinNatal also,aregreat.Thecoastissaidtobe almostasmalariousastheWestCoast ofAfrica;forthroughoutZululandit isnotliketheNatalandKaffrariacoast, highandbeautifullywooded,butlow andswampy,beingbutasuccessionof lagoonsandtidalmarshes.Afewmiles, however,fromtheseathelandbeginsto riseinterraces,whicharecoveredwith grass,andbackedeverandanonby mountainorhillyranges.Therearebut twobays-Durnfordtothesouth,and St.Lucia,wheretheprincipalriver,the Umvolosi,fallsintotheIndianOcean. henatureoftheclimatealongthe wholesea-coastlendersitdoubtful whetheritwilleverbeinhabited. Civilisationmust,therefore,enterZululand,asourtroopsaredoing,fromNatal andtheTransvaal,ornotatall.

Sontl;()restatingthelanflsofthi SwenzlisowittAmatongsinoi*direction, Natal,nastitolandandFtontiolanetithe other;besidescarryinglois-Successful inroadsintothepresentOrangeFree StateandtheTransvaaltotheWest andNorth-West.Therewere,of course,noEuropeansthenin'these territories.ButChaka,forthefurtheranceofhisplanofuniversalconquest andtheestablishmentofa"Zulu"or "Heavenly"Empire,dividedand mixeduptheseveralconqueredtribes, somesixtyinnumber,andallottedand distributedthemthusintermingledand brokenhereandtherewithconsummate craft,soastosecuretheirfuturepowerlessnesstocoalesceandrebel.Bycollectingthesurvivorsandtakingrefuge inBritishterritorysonicfortyofthese tribeshavebecomeresuscitated.Like hisWesternprototype,Chaletinsisted uponakindofconscriptionwhichmade everymaleinhabitantawarrior;he hadhisImperialGuard;heestablished fortifiedkraalsorpermanentcamps,and withtheaidofsomeEuropeanotlicets sedulouslydrilledhisvestandeverincreasingarmy.In1825thenews reachedhimthatNapoleonhadbeen overthrownbytheBritishunderKing Gemge."Yes,Iseenow,"lieComplacentlyremarked,"thereateonly twogreatchiefsinalltheearthmy brother,KingGeorge,lieisKingofall thewhites;andI,Cloaks,IateKing ofalltheblacks."

AttheageoffortyKingChaimwas assassinatedandhistwolorothersUmllanganeandDingaanstroveastowhich shouldteigninhis.stead.Dingaansoon killedUmblangane,andfortwelveyears, from1828to1840,carriedonthe Goveritatentiuapesseaelebutofcoarse domesticallycruelway.'Ihusbandsof hispeoplefledintotheneighbourhood andsoughttheprotectionoftheBritish, who,in1835,hadfoundedasettlement atDurbanonthecoastofNatal.Towardsthecloseofhisreign,however, Dingaancameintoconth-twiththe Dutch,andbyanatrociousdeedof treacheryandcrueltyendeavouredto exterminatetheseforeigninvadersofhis southerndominions.Bootdomestic treasonfoughtagainsthimontheperson ofhisbrotherPanda,who.goingoverto theDutch,enabledthemto&dratand handovertohisownpartisansforassessiustiunthesecondmoiler&ofthenew Zuludynasty.Pandareignedfrom1840 to1872.Hispolicywasofapacific characterthroughout-"incomparably milder,"saysSirTheophilusShepstoee, "andmoremercifulthanthatof Dingaan."TheDutchheeverregarded with"feelingsofgratefulattachment andloyalty."

LongbeforePandadiedbehadbecomealmostunfittogovern.Andhis inertnessbothofbodyandminddoubtlessgaveriseto,oratanyrate,preventedhimfromcheckingtherivalryfor successiontohisthronebetweetetwoof leissons,thenowfamousCetewayoand Umbulazi.Cetewayoprovedvictorious inagreatbattlefoughtonthehanksof theTugela,andwasshortlyafterwards recognisedasheirapparentinagreat national8StiPMblyoftheZulus, November1857.

ThehistoryofZululanddoesnot carryusintoremoteages.Littleor nothingisknownofitspastuntilthe reignofChaka,whowasbornin1787, andsucceededhisfuther,Usenzangacona, thechiefofapettytribedwellingon thesea-coastbetweentheriversUmvolosiandUmlatuis.Butthisinsignificanttribewasdestinedduringtheshort fifteenyears'reignofCloakstoassert itsparamountauthorityoveraterritory somefourtimesthesizeoftheZululandofourday,andawholepopulation ofabouttwicethenumberofitspresent inhabitants.

Then,again,themostfascinatingof allstudies-History-is,whenunac-

Pandadietiu1872,andCetewayo wascrownedinstatebySirTheophilus Shepsteliein1873."Itwasdecreed," wrotethemodernWarwick,"thatI shouldhelookeduponasChaka,thatis, that1shouldpersonateandtakethat chief'srank."klirTheophilusleftthe newly-installedmonarchwiththeunderstandingthat"therelationswhichhad subsistedinPanda'stimebetweenNatal andtheZulusshouldcontinueandbe evenmoreintimateandcordial."Howit hascometopassthatsuchafriendly beginningshouldhavecometosuchan unfortunateending,spacedoesnotpermituseventobegintoexamine.But formaterialsforsoundconclusionsupon thisall-itnportentquestion,weknowof noworktowhichthereadercangowith greaterconfidencethantothatwhichwe havefollowed,sometimesverbatim,in theseremarks,andthefulltitleofwhich standsattheheadofthispaper.Tablet.

TheSocietywishestoplaceasmany aspossibleofIrishCatholicfamilieson Westernsoil.TheAssociationrepresents allclasses,andcomprisesbishops,priests, andlaymen.BishopSpalding,thePresidentoftheDirectory,observedinthe courseofhisspeechthat,"thesocietyis CatholicandIrish,notbecauseitsmembersarebigoted,butbecausetheyhave especialfacilitiesforhelpingtheIrish Catholicpeople.TheIrisharenaturally farmers,andareunexceptionablein strength,freshness,vigorofcharacter, andpurity,inspiteofoppression,and, therefore,theyarepeculiarlyadaptedto farming."Durabilityoffaith,saidthe speaker,restsparticularlywiththerural population.Citiesbegetgreatvirtues aswellasgreatvices.Theprojectwas abusinessone.Itwasnotacharitable scheme.TheStockoftheCorporation is£20,000.

RetributioninRussia. TheextenttowhichtheRussianRevolutioniswagingretaliatorywaragainst theauthoritiesisunexampledinhistory. Incendiarismisbynomeansinitselfan unknownresortofsocialoragrarianinsurgency,butinnootherrecorded instancehasitbeencarriedonthegrand scalenowwitnessedinRussia.Inthe beginningofthepresentcenturyincendiaryfires,consequentonagrarian discontent,wereverycommonthroughoutEngland-.acircumstancewhichit wouldbewellforthePallMallGazette andsomeotherpapersofthesame kidneytobearinmindwhenwriting theirarticlesofunbecomingexultation overtheinternaltroublesofRussia.In thosearticlesgenerallytheGovernment isblamedforseverity,andtheaudacity andpoweroftheinsurrectionadmired andmarvelledatintheonebreath,and theusualmoraldrawnisthatreform mustbeconcededbytheGovernment. Weverymuchwonderwhatwouldhe theadviceofthePallMallandthose otherjournalswhichwriteinthisstrain hadtheinsurrectionbeenonein,say, India,andtheauthoritiesengagedinits suppressionBritish.Wemaybesure, however,thatyieldingtoarmedforceor moralintimidationwouldbeaboutthe lastpieceofadvicetobetendered.The caseofIndiaisagoodoneforillustration,becausethereareagoodmany pointsofresemblancebetweenthe governmentofthatcountryandthatof Russia,neitherallowinganysemblance ofrepresentativecontrol.Nationalanti pathiesshouldnotblindthepeopleand Pressofanycountrytothewickedness anddangerofimmensesocialoutbursts likethatwhichisnowconvulsingthevast territoryoftheCzar.Theflamesthere enkindledarelikelyenoughtospread,if notchecked,andweshouldnotliketo hearoftheincendiaryideatakingsanctuary,say,inLondon.Wearequite inaccordwiththesympathywhichbewailstherigoursandcrueltiesinflicted, thereistoomuchreasontofear,upon manyinnocentaswellassomeguilty peopleinthestamping-outofthepresent remarkableuprisinginRussia.Butwhen wefindthesympathyexistinginquarters whichtreatedwithscepticalinsensibility thebrutalitiespractisedacouideofyears agobythelateantagonistofRussia upontheirunhappyEuropeansubjects, wearestronglytemptedtosuspectits genuineness,andquestionthefacts uponwhichithasbeenexpended.

FatherTomBurkewasborninGalwayonthe1stSeptemder,1830,the youngestchild,andonlyson,ofhis parents.Hisfirstteacherswerethebrothers ofSt.Patrick,alocalcommunity,in Galway.Afterwards,hewenttothe seminary,keptbyDr.O'Toole.Thence totheDominicanhouseinGalway.He wasclothedwiththehabitoftheFriar PreachersattheConventofPerugia, whereliereceivedMinorOrdersfrom thethenBishopofthatcity,nowPope LeoXIII.Hethenwenttostudyin Rome,whereheremaineduntilsentas NovitiateMastertoWorxIchester,England.Therehoremainedforaboutfive years.HewasordainedPriestatClifdon,18.53,byBishopBurgess.In 1855bewentasNovitiateMasterat Tullayht,intheneighbourhoodof Dublin.

In1871hewenttotheUnitedStates asVisitatorofhisOrder,whereheremainednearlytwoyears,andgave about400lectures,besidessermonsin theinterval.£80,000wastheresult ofhislabors;manychurches,hospitals, andorphanagesbeingthusfreedfrom debt.

Acorrespondentwrites:"Lastweekanumberof'excommunicatedFenians'mettogetherina weaver'sshed,offLowerTebbutt,at Rochdale-road,Manchester,forthe purpose,asthechairmanexplained,of consideringthebeststepstobeadopted withreferencetotherefusalofthe RomanCatholicclergytoadmitthem (theFenians)toaparticipationinthe benefitsoftheirreligion.'Itappears thattheprinciplesofFenianism,in commonwiththoseofallothersecret societies,havebeencondemnedbythe RomanCatholicbishopsaswhollyincompatiblewithreligionandgoodorder, andconsequentlynoneadheringtothose principlesaretobeadmittedtocommunionwiththefaithful.Thechair wastakenbyabricklayer'slabourer, residingatMilesPlatting,whoopened theproceedingsinaverytemperate speech.Afterwardsseveralrabidand visionaryaddressesweredelivered.One man,acooper,proposediftheclergy persistedintheirrefusaltoreceivethem incommunion,tobuildachapel,and haveapriestoftheirown,andtobe independentofthebishops.'Thisproposalwas,however,badlyreceived. THEReportoftheSelectCommittee onthequestionofInlandMailConveyancebythePolice,havingbeenbrought upanddulydebated,hasbeen adopted,almostunanimously,bythe LegislativeCouncil.Littlemoreremainstobedonebut,togiveproper noticetocontractors,whoseinterests maybeaffectedandlaunchthescheme onitspracticaltrial. Certainconsiderationsofageneral characterappeartoustohavebeen overlookedinthedebateonthesubject. TheCommittee'sReport,beingframed exclusivelyupontheReportofthe SuperintendentofPolice-adocument mainlyconsistingofitemsofcost-is itselfverymuchconcernedwithmatters ofmeredetail,andtheCommitteemembers,aswellastheHouseitself,seem tohaveforgottenthebroaderviews bearingonthesubject,whichshould havebeentaken,andwhichareof greatimportanceineverygeneral schemeofpolicy,andparticularlysoin thematterofanewdeparturefrom establishedandlongtriedlinesofprocedure.

Attentiontootherthings-toexcelin themalso-willimpairhisproficiency inthatofwhichheisalreadymaster. Tosnatchatmanythingsistograsp butfew;Jackofalltrades,isfarthe mostpart,masterofnone. Theroutineofmailcarryingseems indeedadifferenttradefromthatof thief-catching.Willnottheattempt tocombinethetwo,impairefficiency, inoneorother,ifnot,inboth? Thusitwillcometopassthataman's wholeprospectsintheForce-hishopes ofapprobationandpromotion-willrest uponhisdischargeofdutiesforeignto histruecalling.Hewillstandwell withhissuperiors;liewillbenearer anotherstepupwardsanotherdecoratingstripeonhisuniform,notbecause ofhisshrewdnessandsharpnessin dealingwithoffenders,butonaccount oftotallydifferentqualifications.Becauseheisexactandpunctual;looks wellafterhishorsesseesthereisno springshakey,notyreloose;because lieiscarefulofparcels.politetopassengers;receivesandissuesmailswitha regularitywhichprecludescomplaint. Andso-'thoamemberofthepolice force,hewillbelikelytomeetwith praiseandpromotion,becauseheisa carefulbusinessman;anobligingservant;agoodclerk;orteamsteror ostler;oranythingelsehemaybe described-ratherthanatruepoliceman. Theperilofpermittingapoliceforce tobecome,astheFrenchsay,demoralise, oraswewouldexpressit,incapacitated fortheproperworkrequired,hasbeen sadlyexemplifiedintheneighbouring colonyofVictoria.There,afew ruffianshavelaughedtoscornthewhole forceformorethanatwelvemonth. Andwhy?Becausetherewasnota pluckyfellow,noragoodbushmanto befoundinthelot.Inanyother colonytheKellyswouldhavehadbuta briefcareer,becausetheywouldhave hadtocopewiththemanjustsuited fortheoccasion-thebushtrooper. ButinVictoria,themarvellousincrease ofpopulationanditsconcentrationin greltcitiesandtowns,developedanother typeoftheclass.TheMelbourne policemanhascometobeanimmense specimenofovergrownhumanity,he takesthecensusreturnsadmirably;he isanexcellentinspectorofnuisances; heisaterrortostraydogsandnasty butchersheisuptothepickpockets andpeoplewhouseshortweightsand measures;heis,perhaps,agoodpatrollerofthestreets,butinthebushheisgoodfornothing.Torideand shoot,andstandfirebravely,arethings hehasforgotten,orhadnottimeto learninthemultiplicityofhisothar occupations.Ilehasbeenputtoand keptatothertasks,andso,tothe presentday,hehasnutbeenableto catchthe

Distinctentirelyfromthequestionof cost,comestheconsideration-what shallbetheeffectofthecontemplated change,onthepolicethemselves,in theirownpropersphereofaction?A policemanaboveallthingselseshould beathief-catcher.Heisexactlywhat heoughttobewhencleverat theexerciseofallthoseundefinable qualitieswhicharecalledforthinthe pursuitandhuntingdownofcriminals. Heisathisownworkwhencleverly ferretingout,lawbreakersofevery sort,who,asparasites,forever,preyon civilisationandsociallife.Training combinedwithinherentaptitudehave madesomemenmastersatthiswork. Buttherearelimits,andverycircumscribedonestoo,tohumancapacities. Foramantobegoodatanyonething inahighdegree,hemustbecont withbeinggood littleelsebWes.

Fromanotherandadifferentpointof view,itmaybethoughtthattheGovernmentofferstodotoomuchforus, inthismatterofthemailconveyance. EXTRAORDINARYCAREEROFALUNATIC.

-Theoldadagethatfactisstrangerthan fictionhasbeencuriouslyillustratedinthe caseofawomanwho,underthenameof EdwardDeLacyEvans,passedasamanfor nearlytwentyyearsinvariousplacesinthe colonyofVictoria.Theconcealmentofher sexwascompleteasregardstheworldat largebrit-havingtwicemarried-Evansappearstohavebeenabletohidethetruth evenfromhietwowivesalso.Thereisnot muchknownofthefirstwifeofthisextraordinaryimposterexceptthatshediedin Aug.1867.Thesecondmarriagetookplace onSept.18.1868,inthePresbyterianChurch, Ballarat.Mrs.Evansnumber2.isyetliving andsheisanobjectofspecialinterestto newspaperreporters,atthepresentmoment, severalofwhomhaveinterviewedthewonderfulcouple.Thesexoftheimpostorwas undoubtedlyascertainedattheKewAsylum, towhichinstitutionhehadbeenreturnedas amalelunatic.Theprisonerhadbeensent upfromtheBendigoLunaticAsylum,where hehadbeenaninmateforsixweeksundis'covered.Evansmadesuzliafussatthe bath-roomoftheBendigoAsylumthatthe ordealofabathwasescaped,andanythought ofconcealment-couldithavearisen-would havebeenquietedbythefactthathewas regularlyvisitedtherebyawife,withinfantchildinarms.Thebath-room,the attendantsandthedoctorsatKewsettledthe matter,andEvanswaslastseeninoneof thebedsofthewomen'ssideoftheAsylum, withaheapofwomen'sclothesatthefootof thebedandthegreatpairoftopbootstillthen used,standingdisconsolateattheside.Evans isnowutterlymadbutperhapsthewoman wasalwaysso;thereappearsnoreasonwhy sheshouldhaveconcealedsopertinaciously hersexandsubjectedherselftosodistressing amanneroflife.Sheisdescribedasof singularlymasculineaspect,brawnyarms, finecutfeatures,butforehead"vilanously low."Thereisnotaparticleofbeardonher facebut,withthisexception,haseveryoutwardsemblanceofbeingwhatsheprofessed tobe-aroughbushman,orahardyminer. Thewondersofthecasedonotendwithwhat concernsEvans.Mrs.Evansthe2nd.states thataltogethershelivedeightyearswithher presumedhusband.Sheaccountsforthe birthofherchildbysayingthat"shebelievessomestrangemanenteredthehouse aboutthetimethatherhusbandshouldhave returnedhomewhenhewasworkingthe afternoonshiftinthemines."Itisplain, Mrs.Evansisaverysimpleandconfiding creature.ThepoetMoorewouldnotperhaps havebeensosevereonthosehedesignated "thewilysex,"ifhecouldhaverealizedthe possibilityofsounsophisticatedaspecimen asthispoorwomanseemstobe.Evans beingalunatic,her20yearsconcealmentof sexwillonlyberegardedaswonderful,but weresheopentoprosecutionitwould,no doubt.beshewnthatitwasaverycriminal proceedinglikewise.

TheceremonyofConfirmationwasheld onSunday,21stSept.,inSt.Patrick's Church,byhisLordshipDr.Griver.Itis scarcelynecessarytosay,thatarrangements andpreliminariesforthedueandbecoming receptionoftheSacrament,werecreditably designedandcarried'out.Thepreparation andmanagementoftheyoungladiesintended tobeconfirmedbeingsolelyundertheable directionofthegoodSistersofMercy,which wassufficienttoensureitthecredititcertainlydeserved.Theyoungladiesassembled attheSchool-room,aboutaquartertoten, afterbeinginvestedwiththeirwhiterobes andlongwhiteveils,proceededintwosto theChurch.HisLordshipafterexplaining tothemthenatureoftheSacramentthey wereabouttoreceive,andtheobligations theywouldcontractbyitsreception,proceededtoadministertheSacrament.The VeniCreatorwasthenintonedinamost praiseworthymannerbytithe."Yorkchoir." WILLIAMSHAWpleadingguiltytoburglaryatMrs.JaneBay's,Bunbury,was sentencedto5yearspenalservitude.

BERNARDKAINandJAMESKAIN,hisSOB, wereacquittedonachargeofCattlestealing, broughtagainstthembyMr.GeorgeCuredaleofFremantle.

HENRYEARL,68yearsofagewascharged withfeloniouslyassaulting,atNorthFremantle,AndrewBurns,afellow-pensioner 78yearsofage.Thehorribleinjury, somehowinflicted,wasthepokingoutofthe eyeoftheunluckypoormanBurnsAsall thepartiesconcerned,werequiteintoxicated atthetime,itwasimpossibletoprovehow theatrociousoccurrencetookplace.Earl wasthereforeacquitted.Itmust,however, betohimaconstantsubjectofregret,that adrunkenrowinwhichhetookpart,ledto themiserableresultofdarkeningtheremainingdaysofanoldcomrade.

EDWARDFAGGwhilstlockedupfor drunkennessinthePerthPrison,violently assaulted,withawoodenstool,amannamed JohnRoachwhowasimprisonedinthesame cell.Faggwassufferingfromdelirium tremens.HisHonorsaidthiswasnoexcuse andpassedsentenceofthreeyears'imprisonment.

WILLIAMBOWLERstole30s.fromthe pocketofJohnDesmond,whilethelatter layasleepundertheverandahofthe NarroginInn.ProofDetectiveGloversaw thetheftcommitted.Sentencesevenyears' penalservitude.

JonJARVISwaschargedwithhavingcommittedanoffence,theenormityofwhich maybeinferredfromthefactthatwhen broughtin,bytheJury,guiltyoftheattempt only,hewassentencedto7years'imprisonment.

Weregrettohavetoannouncethe deathofthelateMotherSuperiorof AllHallows'Convent,Brisbane,which occurred_on1stJuly.Thedeceased ladywasanativeofPortarlington,Ireland.SheenteredtheNovitiateofSt. Michael'sConventofMercy,Athy,in September1861,andwasprofessedin February,1864,byCanonAndrew Quinn(brotherofhisLordship,the BishopofBrisbane).Atthecloseof

herNovitiate,hearingtherewasan applicationfromBrisbaneforsisters, sheofferedherselffortheQueensland mission.Permissionbeinggrantedb1 herSuperior,shesailedincompany withothersforBrisbane,andarrivedin November,1865.Immediatelyonher arrivalshecommencedherlaboursinSt. Stephee'eSchool,wheresheremained untilJanuary,1871.Failinghealth causedhertoberemovedfromthis arduousdutyforatime,nevertheless hergentleinfluencediditsworkamongst thelittleonesatSt.Vincent'sOrphanage,Nudgee,wheresheresidedwhile regainingstrengthtillMay,1873.On theestablishmentoftheConventof Mercy,inToowoomba,shewasappointedLocalSuperior,whichofficeshe helduntilre-calledtoBrisbaneinApril, 1875,againtoresumethechargeofSt Stephen'sSchoolDelicacyofhealth againcompelledhertoceasefromactive dutyinJanuary,1877,andsincethen shehadbeenmoreorlessaninvalid. Wherevershewasengagedintheinstructionofchildrensinceshearrivedin Queensland,shewontheirveneration andlovebyherholyinfluence,and sweetandkindlymannerandwonderfulinmanycaseshasbeentheresultof heradviceandinstructionintheirregard. AtelegramfromRomeannounces thatthelengthenedlitigationbetween theBrothersAntonelliandtheCountess LambertinihasterminatedinetheRoman CourtofAppealbyadecisioniufavour oftheAntonelliandagainsttheCountess,whohavingbeenbeateninthe courtsbelowappealedfromtheirdecision, andhasnowbadherappealrefusedwith costs.Thushasterminatedthefamous AntonelliWillCase,which,itwasat onetimepredicted,wouldbringdisaster anddisgraceontheCourtofRome,the memoryofoneofitsPrinces,nod,indeed, theCatholicChurchatlarge.Thefacts oftheeasearefewandsimple.Cardinal Antonelliinheritedfromhisfathera largepatrimonialestate,andbyhiswill beleftthisestatetohisbrothersand nephews.Beforemanymonthselapsed afterthedeathoftheCardinalaclaimant appearedforhisestateinthepersonage ofaRomanladyofrank,theCountess Larubertiii.Aboutthebirthofthis youngladyagreatmysteryhung,butshe waspossessedofsomefortune,andwas weddedtooneoftheRomannoblesse. Thecasewhit+theCountesssetupwas thatshewasthedaughterofCardinal Antonellibyanunknownladyofrank, andifsheprovedthiscaseshewould havebeenentitled,underthelawsof Italy,toagreatportionoftheCardinal's estate,fortheCodeNapoleondoesnot allowthedisinheritingbyafathereven ofhisillegitimatechildren.Whenthe CountessappearedonthesceneProtestantEnglandreceivedhercasewitha shoutofconfidenceanddelight.Noone questionedtheguiltoftheCardinal,and wewereassuredbytheRomancorrespondentsofEnglishpapersthatthe storyresteduponproofwhichplacedits accuracybeyondquestion.Inthefulness oftimethecaseofLambertiniv.Antonelliripenedintotrial,andwasinvestigatedbeforetheRemeltCourtofFirst Instance.ThejudgesoftheItalian Kingdomarenotinclinedtoview churchmenlivingordeadwithspecial favour,butintheItaliancourtsare somemagistratesofgreatlearningand loveofjustice,andthecausecelebregot fromthecourtafairtrial.Theresultis knowntoeveryone.Thestoryofthe Countessandherwitnesseswas thoroughlyinvestigated,and,asallthe worldkrows,theresultwasthatitwas shatteredtoatoms,andthatitwassatisfactorilyshownthattherewasnotone wordorshadowoftruthinthecharges againstthedeadCardinal.TheCourt unanimouslygaleadecisionagainstthe Countess,andthatladyhavingappealedfromthedecision,theSupreme CourtoftheKingdom,asalready statedconfirmedthedecisionofthe Courtbelow.Inaword,themyth hasbeenrelegatedtothelimboof lyingstoriesofwhichthetaleofPope Joanisthetype.TheCatholicworld neverbelievedawordoftheLam bertinistory,buttheyaregladthatit hasthusbeendisposedofforever. ThenameofAntonelliisanhonored oreinallthechurches.Thelate Cardinalwasconfessedlyastatesman, notachurchman.Fromhisearliest dayshewasdevotedtothestormypaths ofpolitics;henever,webelieve,took ordersasapriestButhewasthe devotedservantandthebelovedfriend ofPiusIX.,andstandingbytheside ofhismaster,hewagedfortheTemporal Poweragoodfight,which,though doomedforatimetodetest,wasnever equalledinitsvalorousperseverancearid resources.TheCatholicworldwillrejoicethatuponthefairfameofsucha mannostainorblotwilleveninthe mindsofbigotsrest.Wetrustalso thattheconclusionofthecasewillhave alessonfortheProtestantworld,especiallyintheseislands.Ifto-morrowa chargeofthiskindwasmadeagainsta deadArchbishopofCanterbury,the Catholicsoftheseislandswouldhear thechargewithsorrow,andyieldcredencetoitonlyonthestrongestproof. Butwecannotforgettheshoutofjoy andtheexpressionsofunqualified

beliefwithwhichwhatwassomewhat prematurelycalledtheAnton(lliscandal wasreceivedbywhatiscalledthe "EvangelicalWorld"intheseislands. ThisNo-Poperypassionhasevenworse effectsthantheihamefulreadiness showntobelieveafoulslanderona deadman.Theverysamespirititis whichatthismomentmakestheEducationQuestionathorninthesideof GovernmentsandParliaments.The millionswhoswallowedtheAntonelli scandalarethebugbearofstatesmen whodesiredtodojusticetoCatholic claims.Thespiritoftolerationhas dunewouders-ithaschangedthe characterofnationsandthecourseof history.Ithas,however,usyetfade,: tomodifyintheslightestdegreeoneof thelastrelicsofanevilpast--thedulness,thespite,andthefollyoftheNoPoperyEnglishman.Theswordof Tolerationisasharpone;ithisscut downsonicgiantsinitsdays;butit has,uptothisleftunscathedthelong earsofthemostaksnrtlanimalthatnow walkstheearth-thejackassofExeter Hall!-Freeman.

Onthe8thofDecember,1863,shortly beforedusk,myyoungersisterantimyself,accompaniedbyanattendant,left thehousefurtheChurchoftheCampania, aChurchformerlybelongingtothe JesuitFathers,butconfiscatedbythe Governmentsometimepreviously. Thoughitstillwantedanhourbeforethe openingoftheservices,thestreetswere alreadythrongedwithpeopleallhound inthesamedirectionasourselves,forit wastheclosingfeastdayoftheInimacnlateConceptsm,andallwhocouldwere invitedtoattend.

Iwasfollowedcloselybysome woman,who,eveninthathourofperil, carefullycurriedherlittlechurchcarpet onher,attn.Healandbrainwere scorchingfromtheintenseheat,suI snatchedatthecarpetsotomptinglyby me,piacingitovermyhead;butshe wouldnotpartwithit,andquicklytsok itback,restoringittoitsoriginalposition.Desperatewithpain,Ioncemore graspedit;butshetuskitagainstill calmlyproceedingonherway.Seeing ageutleinaninfrontofune,Iseizedboil ofthetailofhiscoat,thinkingitmight helptodragmeon,forIfeltasifmy powersofendurencewerefastfailing; butmycompanionofthecarpet,catchingholdofmeinherturn,Iwasforced toletgumyholdaridgavemyselfup forlost.Justatthismonentamolten pieceofmetalfelldownnearus,and mycompanionseizingitinherhands, flungitawayintothespacebeyond.

Thisspiritedactionmusthaveroused myflaggingenergies,forIjustremembermakingonedesperateeffort moreandWine,halfblindedbysmoke, andburntmarscorchedbythefiery heat,fromthelivingwallontothe pavementbelow.Isaw,aswellasthe smokepermitted,thattherewasaclearspacebetweenmeandthelargedoor, andmademywaytowardsit,onlyto finditblockedupwithanotherstrugglingmass,piledoneonthetopofthe other,asfarastheeyecouldreach.I thenrecollectedthattherewasaside doornotgenerallyused.Icreptinthat direction,andfoundanumberofpersons alreadycolleeteninthwaitinganxiously forhelpfromoutside,forthesoldiers hailbeensenttotherescue,andaxein handwerebreakingdownthedoor.I mountedasmalltablecloseby,andwaited tillIsawone-halfofthebarrierfall, whenIthrewmyselfintotheopening, notquicklyenoughthough,toprevent beingthrowndownbetwathahostof others,equallyeagerasmyselffor escape.Ifell,literallyonthethreshold ofthedoor,butIheardthemcry,"Let usfirstsavethoseunderneath,"and managedtothrustforthonefingerto showtherewasahumanbeingattached toit,andsoIwasextricated,slowly butsurely,aswereallthoseassembled atthatloot.

Wefoundthechurch,evenatthis earlyhour,almostfilled,andcould scarcelythreadourwaythroughthe densemassassembledattheentrance. UrgedbyIknownetwhatimpulse,I leftmylessventuresomecompanions, determinedtomakemywaythrough thebodyofthechurch,town,(Isthehigh altar,and,bydintofpushingand strugglingalittle,andedgingmyself tinougheveryavidlablespace,Imanaged toattainmyobject,andtookupmy positiononthestepsofasidealtar,quite nearthestiffish'door,fromwhenceI couldhaveafullviewoftheceremony abouttocommence.Afewminutes,I shouldthink,afterIbadsettledmyself, Isawoneoftheassistantsenter,light inhand,tocommencetheprocessof illumination.Heapproachedthehigh altar,andhadalreadylitoneortwoof thelightswhenliesawthattheflame washigherthanwasprudent;hetried firsttoblowitout,butthisonlymade itworse;thenhetoreoffthelongcloak orcepa,inwhichhewasenveloped,and endeavouredtoextinguishitinthat way;buttheincreasedcurrentofair onlyfanuedtheflamestillhigher,for allthelightshadvowunitedinline, androseinacolumnoffire,tillsuddenlyapartofthedraperycaught,and, inasecond,thewholeofthegauzy canopyoverheadwasinablaze.Then aroseasceneofwildandterribleconfusionallhurrying,byonecommon impulse,towardsthenearestdoors, especiallythosewhichstoodateither sideofthechurch,hutwhichunfortunatelyopenedinwards,andsoona livingmass,inextricablyjammedand packedtogether,heapedoneonthetop oftheother,formedanimmensebarrier, extendingacrossthechurchfromone sideto(boodles. Togetherwithseveralpeoplenearme, 1hurriedtothesacristydoor,near which,asIhavesaidbefore,Ihind takenmyplace,butfounditguardedby oneofthesacristans,whoprobablynot imaginingtheextentofthedanger,or fearfulfurthetreusuresleftinhischarge, burredthewaywithextendedarmsand refusedtoletuspass.Letmehere statethatasectouastheofficiating priestsarrived,whichtheydidshortly after,theyimmediatelyhadthepassage leftfree,andninnymadetheirescape throughit.AstomyselfIdetermined tomakemywaythroughthebodyof thechurchtothefrontdoor;so,RIMnamingupallmyeneigy,andbreathing ferventprayersforhelp,whichIcon-
