InarecentissueoftheWeekly RegisterandCatholicStandardaninstanceofgrossfoulplaywasbroughtto lightbyaveryintelligentandrespectablecorrespondent.Anactofthe BritishParliamentauthorizestheappointmentofCatholicchaplains,for prisonsandworkhouses.Thisact, throughtheinfluenceoflocalbigotry, isadeadletteriumanypartsofEngland.TheBirminghamworkhousehas 620Catholicinmates,andthewould-he guardiansofthepoorhaverefusedthe verymoderatesumof£50ayeartoa Catholicchaplaintoattendtotheir spiritualnecessities.AProtestant chaplainattendsthesameinstitutionut asalaryof£200perannum.Ifthe poormenandwomenwhoprofessthe CatholicfaithwishtohearMasson Sunday,theymustrunouteveninthe mostinclementseasonoftheyear andseekthenearestCatholicchurch. Therecentsudden(loathofanagedinmatewasdeclaredbythephysiciauof theinstitutiontobecausedbyoverexertioninhisendeavorstobebackat theworkhouseattheappointedtime afterhearingMassonSunday.

Sir,-Myattentionhasbeencalledto thefollowingstatementwhich&pairs inyourprintofApril12 Sir RobertPeel'srecentspeechinthe houseofCommonshasverynaturally givengreatoffence,inconsequenceof hisdisrespectfulallusiontoGeorgeIV andhispersonalremarksuponthe Queen,andseveralmembersoftheroyal familyhavedeclaredtheirintention nevertotakeanynoticeofSirRobert forthefuture."

Itissuperfluoustoobservethatsuch astatementisaveryimpudentexpressionofthelatestdevelopmentofthe ridiculousImperialismofthepresent day,andintheofficialattempttogag membersintheHouseofCommonsby thepublishedmenaceoftheroyaldispleasure,thereisaclearbreachof privilege,recallingthemoststupidexhibitionsofroyalmisconduct.

RoyaldispleasureImperialcensure AndbecauseamemberoftheHouseof Commonsdarestoexpresshisopinion inhisplaceinParliament,andtoquote Thackerayandhistoryinsupportof thatopinion! Afterall,itisnotorious thattwomembersoftheRoyalFamily indulgedinsimilarthreats,andagreat dealworse,Iamsorrytosay,asregards Mr.Gladstone,whilethelanguageof theCommander-in-Chiefwithrespect tothelateGovernmentistoowellknowntoneedfurthercommentatthe presentmoment.

HecontestedClareontheoccasionof SirBryanO'Loghlen'selection,and wassecondonthepoll.Duringthe recentvacancyhewasverylatein comingforward,andbothCaptain Vandeleurandpit',,0'13reinhadcanvassedthecOnstituency.Nevertheless beperseveredinhisintentiontofight fortheseat,andthereintee-hasjustified hisconfidence.Hepolledfewervotes thanSirBryan,butthetotalnumber registeredwasunusuallyhigh.Itis rarelythatamansoadvancedj.nyears seeksthesuffragesoftheParliamentary electors,butTheO'GormanMahon stillpossesseswonderfulstrengthand suppleness;and,accordingtohuman calculation,isascapableofdischarging theonerousdutiesasanymemberin theHouse.Onre-enteringtheHouse hewillfindonlyonerepresentative whosatwithhimin1830,Mr.Rice Talbot,whositsforGlamorganshire. Hewasreturnedatthegeneralelection ofthatyearwithTheO'Gorman Mahon,andhasneversinceabandoned publiclife.

Factsarestubbornthings.Willyou snakebettermenandbettercitizensof theminBoardschoolsandSecular schools?Notso;quitethereverse. Ihavelivedforthirtyyearsinthe mostRomanCatholictownsinEngland; andI,asaProtestantclergyman,have forsomeyears-examinedRomanCatholic schoolsandIfoundthattheseschools sparednopainstoturnaverypoorand dangerouspopulationintoenlightened, humanizedGod-fearingpeople.Liverpoolespeciallyowesadebtofgratitude tothemanagersandteachersofRoman Catholicschools;andIshouldbevery muchsurprisediftheablemen,Mr. BushellandMr.Rathbone,whohave beenChairmenoftheLiverpoolSchool Board,wouldnotendorsewhatInow say."

Youappeartobeinstructedtomake meachallenge,which,notwithstanding thechannelthroughwhichitcomes,I acceptwithgreatpleasure;andasyou invitemetoagamewhichtwocanplay at,oneofthepartiesinthecontestmay proveapungentcriticofthecoming K-andCo.;and,bytheway,I wouldadviseyoustrongly,asyou professtobethedepositoryofImperial confidence,tobealittlemorediscreet inthecirculationofyourauthorized versionofRoyalmessages,ortheymay getyouintotrouble,dearMr.Bowles. Likemanyothers,Ihaveputupwitha gooddealofyourinsolencefromtimeto time,and,asyourpersonalitieshave nothingincommonwiththehonourable andlegitimatedutiesofjournalism,you willfindmeequaltotheoccasion.But, asinthepresentinstance,youactas thePlenipotentiaryofRoyalty,goand tellyourmasterthatIamnotthesort ofmantobesmotheredbyImperial menaces,andunlessIreceivethemost amplesatisfactionfromtheRoyalsources, whichhavemadeyoutheirmostimpudentmouthpiece,Ishallsendacopyof yourstatement,togetherwithacopyof myreply,tothePrinceofWalesandto theDukeofCambridge.And,asyou havepublishedandcirculatedsucha declarationoftheintentionoftheRoyal Family,withrespecttomyremarksin theHouseofCommons,Ishallalso availmyselfofafittingopportunityto publish,andtoplacardinLondonand theprovinces,undertheheadingof "SirRobertPeelandtherestofthe RoyalFamily,"bothyourofficialnotificationoftheRoyalmessage,andmy contemptuousacknowledgment.Iam, Sir,yourobedientservant, ROBERTPEEL.

SirRobertPeel,M.P.,havingrecentlydenouncedtheunconstitutionality ofrressegessentoutbyroyalpersonages togeneralsinthefield,andquotedfor herMajesty'sbenefitapassagefrom ThackerayonGeorgeIV.,a"society journal,"VanityFair,printedaparagraphtotheeffectthattheroyalfamily intendedhereafterto"takenonoticeof SirRobertPeel."SirRobertwrotea replywhichVanityFairdidnotprint butwhichhasgotout.ThelateSir RobertPeelleftaspecialinjunctionthat "noneofhischildrenshouldacceptany honourfromtheCrownforservices whichhemighthavebeensupposedto haverenderedtotheState."ThepresentSirRobertisaslittledisposedto acceptmenacesashonoursfromthe Crown.ThePrinceofWaleshastened torepudiateresponsibilityfortheparagraphpublishedbyMr.Bowles,in VanityFair,butdidnutsucceedin

TheNewMemberforClare.

JohnPatrickO'GormanMahon, commonlyknownasTheO'Gorman Mahon,isaboutthesameageasthe presentcentury.Fifty-fiveyearsago, namely,1824,hebecameprominentin thepoliticsofClare,espousingthe causeofCatholicEmancipation,and identifyinghimselfwithO'Connell. WhenO'Connell,in1830,exchanged therepresentationofClareforthatof Kerry,TheO'GormanMahonwasreturnedforhisowncounty,andentered theHouseofCommonsasapolitician ofthemostadvancedschool.Hemade hismarkatonceasapowerfulspeaker. Havingalittlewhileafter,however,

TheCallanScandal-Father Olieeffe'sRetractation.

Thefollowingisafullcopyofthe letterofretractationwrittenbytheRev. RobertO'Keeffo,ofCallan,ofwhicha shortnoticehasalreadyappearedinour columns:-

"TotheMostRev.Dr.Moran:

Theoldestexistinginstitutionofthe IrishChurchisthePilgrimageofSt. Patrick'sPurgatory.ItformsaconnectinglinkbetweenthedaysofSt. Patrickandthepresentday.Itspenitentialexercisesaremostsingular,have alwaysbeenrulatedandconductedby theecclesiasticalauthorities,and,moreover,havescarcelyoverbeeninterrupted foranynotabletime.Thelakeis situatedaboutfourmilesfromtheBay ofDonegal,andabouttenmilesfrom thetownitself;itisapproachedby threeroutes,theprincipalofwhichis thatfromPettigo,whichplaceiseasily reachedbytrain,carsbeinginwaiting toconveythepilgrimstothelake,and aferryboat,appropriatelynamedthe St.Patrick,plyingbetweentheshore andstationisland,wherethedevotional exercisesareperformed. Thetimeforperformingthepilgrimageisfrosithe1stJnlytill15thAugust. Itlasts,accordingtomoderncustom, threedays,althoughmanypersonsremainsix,orevennine.Eachday, threestationsareperformed,,theday beginningwithprayersandMassin theChurchofSt.Patrick,andclosing withasermonandBenedictionofthe BlessedSacrament.EachstationconsistsbesidesthevisitoftheBlessed Sacrament,of97Paters,160Ayesand 29Credos,and,attheendoftheday, fivedecadesoftheRosaryaresaid; butsomepersons,whofollowtheold practice,addtothese,severalotherdevotions;ineverycasethepenitent makesthecircuitofthechurchesand "Saints'Beds"whilerecitinghis prayers,and,asarigorousfastupon onemealofmeagrefoodisobserved duringthewholetime,itwillbeseen thatthepilgrimagetoLoughDergis nolightmatter.Butthemostsingular partofitisthevigil"inprison,"i.e.,in St.Patrick'sChurch,whichnowtakes theplaceoftheancientpurgatorial cave,awholenightbeingspenttherein recitingRosaries,makingtheStations oftheCross,etc.,previoustoConfessionandreceptionofHolyCommunion. Pilgrimsarealsoforbiddentotakeintoxicatingdrinksontheisland,or withinthreemilesofit,ortocarry awaypebblesorwaterfromthelake, lesttheyshouldattachunduevalueto thesethings.

ReportedDeathoftheInformer Nagle.

RichardLalorShieldiedin1851. HewasbornatDrnmdowney,County Kilkenny,August17th,1791,was educatedbytheJesuitsatStoneyhurst, subsequentlygraduatedatTrinity College,andin1814wascalledtothe Bar.Asaplay-writerhewasvery successful.Ineightyearsheproduced sixdramas,which,withoneexception, metwiththeunqualifiedapprovalof

Sometimeagoactiveinquirieswere madeinKingstown,Dalkey,andthe neighbourhoodfortracesofPierce Nagle,whohadbeenmissingfromhis residenceinKingstown.Afterthe Fenianoutbreakthismanattainedunenviablenotorietyasaninformer,and onhisevidencemanyofthosewhotook partintheconspiracywerecondemned. NaglewassacristanoftheCatholic churchofSt.LaurenceO'Toole,North Strand.Healliedhimselfwiththe movementandaffectedtobeoneofits mostactiveorganizers,whileatthe timehewasinactivecommunication withthepolice,givinginformationon hisassociates.Asarewardforhis servicesanannuitywassettledonhim bytheGovernmentofsomethingIlea £200ayear.Themoneywasregularly paidtohimup'tothelastquarter,but theCastleauthoritieswererathersurprisedathisnotapplyinginhisusual wayforhismoney.Inquirieswereset onfoot,andastrangerevelationwas made.Itappearedthatsometime beforeamanwasfounddeadunderan obscurerailwayarchat.theeasternend ofLondon,andattheinquestwhich washeldontheremainsitwasproved thatdeathwascausedbyviolentmeans, asharpironbarbeingfoundfixedin

Uptothe27thult.NewOrleans hadbeenfreefromthescourgewhich isnowdecimatingMemphis,butonthat dayawell-developedsporadiccaseof yellowfevermadeitsappearance.The victimwasayoungItaliangirlnamed Span°,whosefamilyhadbeenlivingin NewOrleansfortwoyears.During thelastepidemictheyleftthetown, andtheirhouseremainedclosedup. Thefamilyleftthehousewhenthe girlwasattacked,anduponherdeath themostextraordinarymeanswere adoptedfordisinfectingthehouse,and preventingthespreadofthedisease. However,whentheintelligenceleaked outthatthediseasehadappearedthe peoplebecamegreatlyexcited,and duringthesameeveningandthefollowingdayseveralfamiliesleftthecity. Inthesoutherndistricts,whichwere visitedlastyearwiththedisease,the utmostapprehensionexistsofanother visitation.Prayersareofferedupin thedifferentchurchesthatthemeans adoptedforanepidemicwillbesuccessful.Alltherailwaysconvergingon Memphishaveceasedrunningtrainsto thatplague-strackenspot,andMemphisis thusisolated.Inthelatterplaceacamp hasbeenestablishedsixmilessouthof thecity.Itconsistsof125tents.A numberofpeoplehavealreadyproceeded tothecamp,butthecolouredpeople refusetogo,andastheauthoritieshave decidedtoissuesuppliesonlytothose whoareinthecamp,sometroubleis apprehended.TheHowardAssociation,whichdidsuchgoodworkduring theepidemicoflastyear,havebeen organised,andseveralnursesarealready atwork.NearlyhalfthewhitepopulationhaveleftBrownsvillethrough fearofthediseasereachingthemfrom Memphis,andbusinesshasbeensuspendedthere.Theonlymeansofcommunicationwiththeplaceisbytelegraph, nomailshavingbeenreceivedforfive days,previoustothe29th.Every whereaquarantinehasbeenestablished againstMemphis,andfromallthe WestofTeelle,s§Oetownswhichare withindirectcommunicationofMemphis, wehearofpicketsandpatrolsIfOug formedtowatchtheroads.

SANITARYSTATEOFPlillT13.-Onthe 10thinst.,ameetingoftheTownCouncil washeldtodiscussagainthequestionofthe stateoftheCityastoSanitarymatters.It isagreedonallsidesthatPerthisina dangerouslydirtycondition,butconsiderable reluctanceisevincedtoputintovigorousexecutionthecleansingoperationsthatare necessary.SirHarryOrdreportedhome thebadstateofthings,andaddedthatthe remedylayinthehandsoftheCorporation,whoManehavefullcontrolinallMunicipal matters.TheSecretaryofStateforthe Colonieswrotebackthatitwasashametoallpartiesconcerned.TheGovernoragain causingthemattertobereferredtotheCity Council,theypasseditontotheirChairman. Mr.S.H.Parkersaid-"Hehimselfcertainly hadnointentionofactinginthecapacityof anassistantInspector,toferretoutoffensiveandnoxiousnuisances."Hisopinionwas thattheInspectorshoulddotheworkfor whichhehadbeenappointed.Tohelpthe InspectortheGovernmentlentapoliceman. Itisseldomallottedtomenwhoinaugurategreatworksofcharitytoenjoy lifesufficientlylongtoseethemextendedovernearlyeveryportionofthe globe,butwhensuchlengthofdaysis vouchsafedtothembyHeaventhey mustfeelthattheirdeedshavebeen crownedbytheblessingofGod.

Suchisthecaseinatleastonenotable example,thatofAbbeLePailleur,of Brittany,thefounderofthatwonderful order,theLittleSistersofthePoor. Thisgoodpriestinauguratedthisnoble orderofcharityin1840,commencing withtwoyoungwomenofhumble origin,butchosenchildrenofDivine Providence.Fortwoyearsthesedevotedsisterspassedtheirnovitiateina garretwhichAbbeLePailleurrented fortheiruse,bothgoingoutdailyto begnotonlywhattheyusedthemselves, butalsosufficienttokeepanumberof agedandinfirmpoorthattheyhadundertakentosupport..

Oneofthesesistershasgonetoher reward,theother-MarieAugustinede laCompassion-stilllives,andisthe superior-generaloftheorder,whichhas spreadsomiraculouslythatinthirtyfiveyearsithaserectedonehundredand forty-fivehousesinEuropeandAmerica. Twothousandfourhundredsistersand threehundrednovicesareemployedin thegreatworkofcharity,andupwards ofeighteenThousandagedpoorofboth sexesareatpresentenjoyingthefree hospitalityoftheirhappyinstitutions. Sincethefoundationofthisorderitis provedfromstatisticsthatfullyforty thousandagedandinfirmpersonshave beensuccouredbytheLittleSisters.Of thisnumbermorethanone-halfdiedin theirinstitutions,andwereafforded Christianburialattheirhands.

"Howwonderfularetheworksof God!"mustbethemostprominent thoughtinthemindofeveryCatholic whopondersonthevastamountofgood accomplishedbythisgreatorderof charityintheshortspaceofthirty-five years.Yetthisisonlyoneof'the numerousordersofcharitywhichhave theirexistencewithinthesanctuaryof theCatholicChurch.

ThepunyeffortsofProtestantism paleintoinsignificancecomparedwith eventhisoneorderofcharity,whose solerelianceforthesupportoftheiraged andinfirmpoorisimplicitrelianceon themercyofGod,oneoftherulesof theorderbeingthatnofundsmustever beallowedtoaccumulate;henceif muchbegiven,itredoundstothebenefitofthepoor,andiftheirappealsfor charityproducebutscantresults,the LittleSistersdenythemselvesthevery necessariesoflifeinordertofeed,clothe, andnursetheirpatients,astheirvows bindthemtopartakeonlyofwhatis leftfromtheirpatients'tablefortheir ownscantysustenance.

Dowenotvisiblybeheldthedivine originofCatholicfaithinsuchself, abneinati°nandsuchheavenlycharity Noearthlyconsiderationcouldsomould thehumanmindastomakeitaccept suchalifeofself-denialandsacrifice unlessitweremaintainedbytheinvisiblegraceofGod.

ThecityofNapleshasafeastthatis specialtoitself,theliquefactionofthe bloodofSt.Januarius.Nothinglikeit

tintlineofrouteavastnumberof militaryguardedhi,tbsidesoftheway, andkeptanopenpassagefortheprocession,prohibitinganyvehiclefrom enteringit.

HavingreachedtheChurchofSanta Chiara,thearchbishopsandcanons enteredthesanctuary,andsuchstrangers aswerespeciallyhonouredwereadmitted toaccompanythemuptothealtar. AmongsttheseweresomeAmericanstheCommendatoreD.J.Oliver,ofSan Francisco;hisdaughter,MissMinnie Oliver;hisniece,MissAnnieHealey theVeryRev.JohnHickey,lateVicarGeneralofPittsburgh,Pa.,etc.,and severalofthenobilityandnotablesof Naples.Thesecrowdedaroundthe bishop,whostoodatthecentreofthe altar;thearchbishopstoodatsome distance.Itmaybewelltostatehere thatthealtaratSantaChiaradiffersis onerespectfrommost,ifnotall,other altars.Inthecentre,wherethetabernacleoughttobe,thereisawidearch openingrightthroughthereredos,and thusanumberofpeoplebehindthealtar observethemiraclefromthatside.Thus itwouldseemthateveryfacilitywas giventoallowthepublictoviewthe miracleclosely.

Thearchbishopnowrecitedtheprayers fromthePontifical.Thesepreliminary prayersbeingended,thereliquaryor ostensorium,ifitmaybecalledso,was removedfromitsbaseandlaidflaton thealtar.Thearchbishopthenexhibited ittoeveryonearoundhim,andthey sawclearlythatthebloodinthevials wasnotinastateofliquefactionthen, butwasdarkintintandadheredtothe aidesofthevialsin.whichitwas.The archbishopandtheelergyonthealtar thenrecitedinmostferventtonesthe Apostles'CreedandtheCreedorSymbol ofSt.Athanasins.Thesewerefollowed bytheLitanyoftheBlessedVirginand the"SalveRegina,"buttheprayers mostfrequentlyrepeatedweretheActs ofFaith.
