Ameetingofthecommitteefor guardingthecivilandreligiousprivilegesoftheWesleyanMethodistChurch Washeldonthe7thinpt.,toconsider whatsteps(ifany)shouldbetakenrespectingtheEducationAct,inviewof themovementoftheRomanCatholic Church.Therewasalargeattendance, andthefollowingresolutionwasadopted von.con:-"Thatthiscommitteeof privileges-whiledisappointedwiththe administrationoftheEducationAct inthatobstructionshavebeenputin thewayofreligiousinstructionbeing giveninStateschoolbuildings-will stronglyopposeanyseparategrantfor educationalpurposesbeinggiventothe RomanCatholicoranyotherChurch, andrequeststhepresidentoftheconferencetoconsultwiththeheadsofthe otherdenominations,withtheviewof holdingaconferenceofministersand membersoftheProtestantchurchesto considerthepresentmovementsofthe RomanCatholicswithreferencetothe EducationAct."

TheSouthAustralianCorrespondent oftheArgusgivesthefollowingparticularsrelativetotheRev.Mr,Elcum, anewlyarrivedministeroftheChurch ofEnglandandtheBishop'schaplain:He(Mr.Elcunt)atoncetookaleadingpositionasapulpitorator,butit wassoonseenthathewasstrongly imbuedwithritualistictendencies.For atimethesewereoverlookedinthe delightexperiencedatthepreacher's oratory,butatlastadecidedprotest hasbeenraisedagainstMr.EIcum's doctrinesandpractices.Mr.Elcum hasbeenteachingthechildrenofSt.Bartholomew'sChurch-asuburbanchurch -singing,andMr.J.E.11Ioultten, alawyerandaLow;Churchman,utteude ingthatchurch,tookstepstocallthe congregationtogether,toconsider whethertheuseoftheschoolroom shouldbegiventoMr.Elcum,and whetherallopportunityshouldnotbe takenawayofallowinghimtoingratiatehimselfwiththeirchildren.lie issuedacirculartotheseat-holders,in whichhesetforthhisobjectionstoMr. Elcumasfollows:-

"ThattheRev.Mr.Elcum,anaccomplishedgentleman,ofwinningmannersandofpleasingaddress,andthereforethemoredangerousasaleaderand instructorofourchildren,holdsand disseminates,especiallyamongtheyoung, thefollowingRomishdoctrinesand practices:-1.Auricularconfession.2. Whatwillthemembersofthe ChurchofEnglandthinkofthehonour thatistobeconferredonthembythis invitation?Theywillsurelyadmire themodestyoftheseWesleyanswho assumetheforemostplaceindefending I'rostestauti-infromthreatenedencroachmentsofRome.Wewereoften toldtherewasneitherheterodoxynor treasoninthemultiplicationtable,but theWesleyanshaverecantedthatopinion,havingrecentlydiscoveredthat bothoneandtheotheraretobefound init.Catholicsonlyaskforashareof thegrantforsecularpurposes.They willnotapplyapennyofittoanecclesiasticalpurpose,andnotasinglehalfpennytoenlighteningtheirchildrenas tothecharacterandlifeofWesleyor anyother"reformee;"andthatbeing so,weareforcedtoinquirehowthis onceinnocentmultiplicationtablehas acquiredsuchaninsidiousanddangerouscharacter.Thinkingtwice,wesee thatitwouldretainitsinnocenceinthe StateorProtestantschools,hutwould becomedangerousifpaidforbythe StateinCatholicschools.This, wesuppose,istheveryalarmjugviewofthecasethatwillbe putbeforeDr.Moorhouse,Dr.Thornton,andotherdivinesoftheChurchof Englandtofrightenthemintohurrying intotheWesleyancamptoengagein thedefenceofProtestantism.Thecall willbealmostloudenoughtowakethe dead,forthereisagreatlungpowerin thatcamp;but,sonorousasitmaybe, itisnotlikelytomeetwithresponsein ProtestantismoutsidetheDissenting bodies.OfthiswehaveafurtherindicationinaprotestagainsttheCatholic claimwhichhasbeenaddressedtothe BallaratCourierbythefollowing ministers Rigg,Win.A.Quick,henry Bath,A.Powell,Wesleyan;John Standrin,Joseph'I'.Piereey,Primitive Methodist;JamesDick,JohnW. InoneofthelettersofFatherGeorge Grey,inthefourthvolumeof"Records oftheEnglishProvinceoftheSociety ofJesus,"isapleasantaccountofthe youthfulCatherineofBraganzaonher arrivalinEnglandasthebrideof CharlesII.Itsays:"Uponherentrancetothekingdom, thechiefoftheEnglishnobilityand thePrivyCouncilheldameeting,and cametotheconclusionthatitwas necessaryforthemarriagetoheperformedbytheProtestantBishop,and accordingtotheritesoftheEstablished ChurchofEngland.Thishavingbeen communicatedtotheQueen,sherepliedthatbothreligionandconscience wouldbyno'meanallOwhertoconsent toit.Andwhen,withloadsofreasons theyvehementlyinsistedthatitwould beneitherhonorablenorsafetothe Kingthattheceremonyshouldlieperformedotherwisethanaccording;tothe riteandlawofthecountry,nay,that eventhelegitimacyofthePepsiissue mightbecalledintoquestion,sheneverthelessfinelyresisted,onreligious grounds.Asalastschemetheyeudeavouredtoconquerherbyhavingrecoursetotheaffectionatecoaxings, entreaties,almostsupplications;ofthe royalspousehimself:Buttheinvincibleheroiuestillstoodoutandpersisted, distinctlyassertingthatsuewould ratherretort'toPortugalwiththe affairunaccomplishedthenyieldagainst herconsciencetotheirdemands,and thatshewouldbesatisfiedwithavery smallship,inwhichshecouldreturn, outofthatgrandfleetwhich,atsuch greatcostandpreparation,andwitha noiseinallEurope,hadconductedher toEngland.Atlengthsheconquered, andthemarriagewasperformedafter theCatholicrite,thoughshedidnot refuse,whatwithsafeconscienceshe couldadmit,thatthemarriagealready performedshouldberatifiedbythe ProtestantBishop.TheCatholics wonderfullyandjustlyextolthisexampleofconstancy.TheProtestants alsoadmireit,andthefalseideais snatchedawayfromthembywhichthey hithertobelieved,thattheQueen, tenderandtrue,likealittlewaxen maid,wouldbebroughttoactandbow towhateverthekingpleased.

7.Prayersforthedead.Thedoctrines andpracticesabove-mentionedare,Iregrettosay,disseinElatedattheCathedral, and,Ihavereasontobelieve,willshortly beintroducedintooneofourleading schools.Ithereforesubmitthatthe matterisoneofemergency,andthat thequestionwhetherMr.Elcumbe allowedtousetheschool-roomforthe purposeof'nu:aiminghimself'Vrdiour children,and,asopportunityoffers,of circulatingdogmasopposedto,andsubversiveof,theProtestantprinciplesof ourreformedChurch,shouldbelaid beforethewardensofSt.Petrtholoirew's, withtheviewofcallingameetingofthe congregationintheschool-roomatan eatlydatetoconsiderthe!natter. isaquestionforthelaity.Ihavenot appealedtotheincumbent,theRev. Mr.Andrews,becauseIdonotwishto bringhimintocollisionwiththebishop. Ihavenotappealedtothebishop,becausehrehewstheRomanisingtendenciesofsonicofourclergy,andhasnot shownanyinclinationtocheckthem.I donotappealtothesynod,becausea numberofitsmembersholdun-Protestentviews."

Themeetingtoconsiderthepoints raisedinthecircularwasheldlastnight, wheuitappearedthatMr.Moulden supportedhisstatementsbyquoting fiomaLook,entitled"AGuideto Heaven,"whichMr.Elcumhadgiven toayouth.Theproceedingswere prettywarm;buteventuallyitwas agreedtoleavethematterinthehands ofMr.Andrews,theincumbent-amost unfortunateissue,seeingthatthelatter, whoi3anesteemedLowChurchman, arrangedwithMr.Elcumthatheshould teachthechildrensinging,andthat,so farasisknown,hehueneverattempted toimbuethemwithhispeculiarviews. Now,however,themutterhasbeen openedup,itwillnotrestwithMr. Moulden'saction.WeshallhavearepetitionoftheMackonochleandHatchaixt cafesonasmallscale,

ThomasFrancisMeagher. ThomasFrancisMeagherwasborn inWaterfordiu1823,andwaseducatedbytheJesuits.Heenteredthe Repealmovement,butin1848leftit andbecameoneoftheleadersofthe YoungIrelandparty.IlewasarrestedonhisreturnfromFrance, whereliehadbeensenttocongratulate theFrenchRepublicans,triedand acquitted..InAugust,1848,howas ['nestednearRathgannon,triedfor hightreason,andsentencedtodeath. Thesentencewasalteredtobanishment toVanDieman'sLand,fromwhichlie escapedin1852,andreachedNew York,wherehereceivedagrandreception.Thenexttwoyearshespentin lecturing.Ilestudiedlaw,wasadmittedtotheBar,andin1856,hebecame editoroftheIrishNewsatNewYork. In1861heorganisedacompanyof Zouaves,joinedtheSixty-Ninth,and servedunderCorcoranthroughthefirst campaign.HeorganizedtheIrish Brigadeinthelatterpartof1861,the servicesofwhichareaconspicuous mutterofhistory.Hewasaccidentally drownedin1867,andhisuntimelyend wasmournedbyhiscountrymen,who haveajustappreciationofsterling patriotismandofloveofcountry,

NearlyeverylouseinNotreDame 'streetseemedturnedinsideout.Paintingsofholysaintsandpopeshungupon theirwalls,whileatintervalswere shrineserectedtotheVirginMaryand thesaints.LookingfromSt.Urbin streeteastwardalongLagauchetiere streetforamilethescenesuggesteda continuoustunnelofevergreens.Were allthetrimiphilarchesandbunting withwhichloyalCanadianswelcomed LorneandLouisefromHalifaxto Ottawaputtogetheritwouldnotsum upsuchacoup&witasgreetedthe gaze.Heftandthereonthesideofthe street,gate-wayswereimprovisedinto shrieeelikefilirygrottos.NotreDame Cathedralhadbutoneadditiontoits usualimposingappearance,themotto emblazonedoverthedoorway,Venite, adt;rentusthallium,'anditseemedasif alltheworldhadcometoworship.At aquarterpast9o'clocktheprocession commencedtomove,andtheHosttook itsplaceinthecentre,carriedbyBishop M'Neirney,ofAlbany,supportedby severelclergymen.Carriedabovethem wasahugecauopy12feetsquare,of yellowcloth,embroideredandemblazonedwithgold,ornamentedwith largewhiteleathers.Uponeachside werecarriedhighuponpolesthreelamps ofthechurch,whileapriestinfront burnedincense.Thiswasprecededby about400priests,allintheirvestments ofoffice.Theofficers'ofthe24th,with drawnswords,actedasabodyguardto thehost,whiletheregiment,under ColonelFahraimlie,wasakuhrilof honourSenn!20bandswerepostedin dillereutpartsoftheprocession,which comprised60societies,maleandfemale, layandelerieal,andasitmovedalong tacoprayedaloudoreachcongregation andsocietysangselectiongfromthe Cantieles.Allwerebareheadedsave thepriestsandmilitary.Cougiegations ofvirginsworebluedressesandwhite veilswithawreathofflowers,andsang, PitieMon.Dieu,'orOraProNobis,' orchantedotherlessmusicalprayers. Theremusthavebeen100,0(X)persons congregatedtogetherwithinthatcircuit ofthreemitesaroundwhichtheprocessionmoved.Thedistrictwasimpassibletoallelsesavetheprocessienis_ts, and,astheHostpassed[dung,Bishop M`Neirneypronouncedthebenedictions, andallkneeledinthedustasinthe presenceofthelivingGod. Slowlytheprocessionpassedalong,and itformedacirclethreemileslong,the headreturningastheendwasleaving thechurch.Thesceneintheinterior ofthecathedrilwasgrand,andthe Hostcameuptheaisleprecededbysix feetfourinchesofparishbeadlein scarletandgoldcoataddkneebreeches, andthenFatherDurocherledhis500 boychoristersinwhitestockings.Ten thousandvoiceswithoneaccordsang theGregorianchant,whilstallkneeled andthebannersdropped,asthehost passeduptheaisle.'TheRev.Father Dowd,ofSt.Patrick'sChurch,assisted theBishop.Thehostwasreplacedlow masswascelebrated,andthegrandest ofallthesegrandKiesDieuceremonies wasover.Thedaycouldnothavebeen morepropitious.Itwascloudy,cool, andpleasant;butinhalf-an-hourafter theceremonyhadbeenfinisheditcommencedtorainandrainedallday, circumstanceswhichthefaithfullooked uponasprovidential.

Thegovernmentrecentlyappointed Lieutenant-GeneralSirGarnetWolseley "tothesuprememilitaryandcivil commandinNatal,theTransvaal,and thenativeterritoriestothenorthward andeastwardofthosecolonieswhich arenowtheseatofwar."Thiseminent soldieristhesonofMajorG.J. Wolseley,ofthe25thRegiment,byhis marriagewithFrancesAnue,daughter ofMr.WilliamSmith,ofGoldenhridgeHouse,CountyDublin.Hewasborn Jule4,1833,sothatheisnowinthe primeoflife,beingbut46yearsofage. Heenteredthearmyin1852,serving withthe80thRegimentintheBurmese War,andreceivingbeforehewas20 yearsofagethemedalforPegu.He waswiththeexpeditionunderSirJohn CheapeagainsttherobberchiefMyattoon,andwasseverelywoundedwhen lendingthestormingpartyagainstthe chief'sstronghold.Thefollowingyear helandedintheCrimea;withthe90th LightInfantry.Hewasagainseverely woundedinasortieonAugust30th. TheOrphanageoftheHolyFamily atBetldehetn,foundedbyCanonBeltoni, hasdevelopedmarvellouslywithinafew years. Ithasnowmorethansixtypupils, and,thankstotheintelligentdirection whichitreceivedfromitsfounder,it promisestoattaingreaterusefulness.*

ElementsoftheCatholicPopulationoftheUnitedStates.

TheIrishelement,however,has prmlvedtkemostimportanttothe ChurchintheUnitedStates,notonly innumberbutinthespiritofpropagntjugtheFaith.TheearlyIrishsettlers, thoughnumerous,werenotsufficiently concentratedincoloniestogaitsany greatlocalstrength,buttheygave,in theCarrells,theEarrys,theOltsietts, theSullivtais,andothers,manydietinguishednamesintheserviceofthe RepublicaswellasintheChurch.Ass ideaofthesubsequentinereageofthe Irishpopulationcanbehadfromthe factthatduringthe30yearsending 1876,theIrishimmigrationtothe UnitedStatesamoutitedto2,001,727.

Anotherpowerfulelementwhichhas rivalledtheIrishinincreasebyimmigration,istheGerman,which,according tothelatestanslmostcarefulestimates, nownumbers1,237,563Catholicsinthe UnitedStates.AlargeSpanishelementwasacquiredwiththe18,000 populationofFloridain1819,andthe 160,000ofCaliforniaandNewMexico in1848.

AsmallerpromisingsourceofCatholic populationisthatofthecoloredpeople, nowsetdownatmorethan25,000. Lastly,theconstantlygrowingfactorof conversionsamongnativenon-Catholics, cannotbeienorest.Atpresent,however,itcannotwellbebroughtwithin therangeofstatistics,thenumberof convertsamongtheconfirmedvarying fromfivepercent.insomediocesesto twelvepercent.inothers.

The(steelcauseitsduecoursebefore theCivilTribunal'ofGraz,which decideditsfavourofFatherBeckx.'I'he firstdecisionwasappealedagainet,and tiny;theSuperiorCourthasgivenits deeieion,whichformsassexcellentand exhaustiveStatepaper.Itholdsthat, inasteuellas.King.fumesII.,uCatholic, wassucceededenthethronebyWilliatn Protestant,itwasanaturalthing foraScotchCathoiicnoblemantowish topeewee.Catholicmissionsinhis nativeland.

Thepleaofthesuppressionofthe orderofJesuitsisdiscardedbythecourt asutterlyusaettable.ThelastplearelatingtotheCatholicEmancipationAct of1829alsoappearedtotheweft perfectlyerroneous,because,inthefirst place,tnissiousarenotconvents;and, inthesecondplace,iftheywere,it wouldbenoconcernofanAustrian come,whichhasonlytodecideaccordingtotheletterandthespiritofthe originalwill.

Uponthesegrounds,theflushingof theinferiorcourtwassimplyaffirmed, withcosts.Asaconsequence,thesum of£13,000,beingtheproceedsofthe saleofPernegg,willbeplacedinthe handsoftheGeneraloftheJesuitsfor thebenefitoftheCatholicmissionsin Scotland,andthedecisionofthecourt willlikewiseformaprecedentbyvirtue ofwhichtheremainderoftheDietrichsteinestatewillalsobecomethepropertyoftheScotchCatholicmissions.

DomBelloniannouncesaschoolof apicultureatBeitjirual,andanormal schoolatJerusalembuttheseestablishmentsarenotyetreadyforoccupancy.

TheCarmelites,installedonMount OlivetbythegenerousPrincessdela TourD'Auvergnearejustfinishingthe buildingoftheirmonastery.Thismonastery,situatedbutastepfromthe SanctuaryoftheAscension,touchestho elegantcloisterwhichencirclesthespot fromwhichoarLordtaughttohis Apostlesthebestofallprayers.The erectionofthiscloisterofthePateris duetotheinexhaustiblecharityofthe PrincessdeisTourD'Auvergne;itis copied.fromthatofPisa,andallaround theinteriorofthegalleriesonlarge platesofenamel,istheLord'sPrayer reproducedinallthelanguagesiuthe world.

AnotherCarmelhasbeenfoundednot farfromBethlehem,midathirdwill soonexistatNazareth.

BetweentheConventofSt.Eliasand thetombofRachel,onthewayto Bethlehem,andonthesummitofa hillockcalledTantoura,CountCamboga delaCeramisjustfinishingasortof dispensaryhospital.Thisgentlemanis Consul-GeneralofAustrianHungary andahighdignitaryoftheKnightsof St.JohuofMalta,amongwhomheis knownasBrotherBernard.Hethinks ofconsigningthisestablishmenttothe religiousHospitallersofMena,.

LikethegrowthoftheRepublic itself,thatoftheCatholicChurchinthe UnitedStatesisaconstantsurprise, andanyspeculationsthatlooktoa solutionofthecausesandresultsare noticedwithinterest.NoChurchin theNewWorldhasshownsomarvellousadevelopment,andnonehasdrawn itsstrengthfromsogreatavarietyof sources.
