OnTuesday,28thult.,themembersofSt, Patrick'sBranchoftheHibernian-AustralasianCatholicBenefitSociety,celebrated theirfirstanniversarybyaSoireeheldinSt. George'sHall,Perth.Thecateringentrusted toMr.Jno.Liddelow,wasperformedina moatsatisfactorymanner.Theexquisite arrangementanddecorationsofthetables drewexpressionsofadmirationfrommany visitors,andwethinkdeservedlyso,as nothingcouldexceedthetastedisplayedby theladiestowhosecarealonethesplendid appearanceoftheroomwasattributable.By thekepdnessofthemembersoftheFremantle Branch,thesteamerLadyStirling,hadbeen engagedtoconveypassengersfromFremantle, returningafterthemeeting.Shortlyafter thedoorswereopenedtheroombecameliterallycrowded-quite400personsbeing present.ThemembersoftheSoeietywore theirhandsomeregalia,whichaddednota littletothepicturesquenessofthescene. ThechairwasoccupiedbyMr.O'Callaghan. thelast-PresidentofSt.Patrick'sBlanch. Justicehavingbeendunetothesubstantial portionoftheprogramme,theChairman rose,andsaidRev.Fathers,Ladiesand Cantlemere-Indeferencetoatittle-honored customwhichseemstohaveprovidedthat thereshallbenotea-drinkingwithoutthe usualappendageofspeechmaking,Iriseto proposethefirsttoastonthepiogramme. Beforeformallymovingit,Imustexpressto youthegreatpleasurewhichI,incommon withtoybrothermembersofSt,Patrick's Branch,feelatwitnessingsomanyofyou assembledherethiseveningtodohonourto theSocietyofwhichwearemembers.The motiveswhichactuatedusinholdingthis Soireearetwo.Inthefirstplace.wedesired byittocommemoratetheformationofour Branch,whichoccurred12monthssince; andsecondly,wewishedthatanopportunity mightbeaffordedtheCatholicYoungMen ofPerth.togainsomeknowledgeoftheadvantageswhichaccruefrommembershipinthe Hibernian-AustralasianCatholicBenefit Society.Thefirstobjectofthemeetingis, Iamhappyiosay,alreadyachieved,even beyondourmostsanguineexpectations,by yourpresencehere,insuchnumbers, andIamhopeful-nay,Iamsure-that whenyouhaveheardtheaddressesofthe gentlemenwhowillspeaktoyouthisevening,thesecondwillbeassuccessfullyaccomplished.(Loudcheers.)Andnow,ladies andgentlemen,1begtoproposethehealth ofHisHolinessPopeLeoXIII,(Cheers.) Ifeelthatinsupportofthissentiment wordsareneedlessThebareenunciation ofourHolyFather'snameunaccompanied byeulogyofanykind,iscalculatedto awakenfeelingsofrespect,venerationand filiallove.ThisonlywillIsay,thatnever wasaffectionfortheHolyFathermoreuniversallyfeltthanatthepresenttime,when LeoXIIIdespoiledofallsavetheaffection ofhischildren,isalmostastrangerinthe cityofwhichheistherightfulsovereign. andfurthermore,that1believeinnopartof theCatholicworldarethereheartsmore devotedtohispersonthanthosewhichbeat inthebosomsofhischildreninWest Australia.(Cheers.) Thenfollowedthehymn-"Godblessour Pope." TheChairmanagainroseandproposedthe healthoftierMajestytheQueenandlioyal Family.IlesaidThetoastwhichInow proposeisonewellworthyofyourenthusiasticreception.luthelonglineof Britishsovereigns,nonamehasbeenmoredeservingofouraffectionthanthatofourpresent Queen,Victoria.AsCatholicsandas'fibernianswehonorher,andaresecondtonone inourattachmenttoherthroneandperson. ShehastreatedherCatholicsubjectswitha fairnesswhichourforefathersdidnotexperienceatthehandsofherpredecessors, andwhere'erherflagwavesitisaguarantee thatweshallherecognisedandrespectedas hersubjects.ThenintrueHibernianstyle letuswish"Longlifetoher."(Cheers). Theaudiencethensung-"Godsavethe Queen." Thenexttoast,"TheBishopandClergy oftheDiocese,"wasproposedbyMr.J.A. Whenwesay-whateveryoneknowstobe true-thatthemostfragrantrosehasits thorn,andthebeewhichmakesthesweetest honeyhasasting.Farbefrommetheungracioustaskofdenyingtosuchameritorious bodyastheclergyarethepossessionofany ofthosegoodqualitieswhichtheiradmirers, likeMr.Lucas,attributetothem.Imean onlytoasserttheprinciplethatwithall theirperfectionstheymayshowshortcomingsoccasionally.YetIbelieve-speaking seriouslyandinjusticetothespeakerto whoseflatteringremarksIamresponding, andtotheclergywhomitispresumptionin me,perhaps,toundertaketorepresent,that theirshortcomingswillbefoundeaexaminationtobefewcomparedwiththeirgood points,andarenotsogrievousastodestroy theirclaimtotheappelatiuuwhichMr. Lucashasbeengoodenoughtobestowupon them,andwhichyou,ladiesandgentlemen, byyourmanifestationsofapplausereveal yourreadinesstobestowlikewise-theappelation,Imean,ofrightgoodfellows'. .NextcroneoneofMoure'sbeautifulmeloties,sweetlysungbyMr.J.ISUNAN. ThenexttoastwasgivenbytheRev.A Boionce,whoonrisingsaid:-Hehadthe honorofproposingatoastwhichcouldnot failtomeetwiththeirheartyapprobation. Itwas-"TheIliberniun-AustralasianCatholicBenefitSociety."Thetitlewasalittle cumbersomeItconsistedoffivedifferent descriptiveepithets,andifitmightnotbe thencedeemedtheveryquintessenceofan excellentsocietyitwascertainlyonethat deservedcreditforseveralstrikingadvantages.Ileholdinhishandsthebookof rules,andhadbeentothetroubleofgitleg themaverycarefulstudy.Asasocietyit uffordedadvantagesandsecuritieswhimIneonfinnedindiudualmoralworth.Thiswas tinageofcorporateactionatimeinwhich everyprudentpersonaimedatmakingpermanentthegoodworklie!nightbe'abletodo, byjoininghandswithothersinagood cause.Bence,therewereteenysocieties now-a-days.Butmetreofthese-asiswell known-havenottheapprovedoftheCatholicChurch.Sonicofthem,beingsecret societies,areprohibitedCatholics.The11.A C.B.Societyisnotofthiskind.Ithasnotonly thecountenancebuttheapprobationofthe localauthoritiesoftheChurch.Considered asaBenefitsocietyitwouldbearthetestof comparisonwithanyoftheassociations establishedinthecolonies.It'sentrance feesarereasonable.Thefuneralallowances arequiteuptotheusualstandard.Itallowsonepoundperweekforsixmonthsto sickmembers,andafterthatperiodareducedweeklyassistanceandinotherrespects ofasimilarcharacter,itholdsitsown againstanyothersocietyopentotheyoung menofthecolony.Itwas,then,inbenefit societyunderthepatronageoftheclergyof theplacesinwhichitwasestablished,and beingaCatholicbody,itlealsocalledHibernian.Whilstthereisrionutd,northe slightestintuitiontotiedfault%saltanyman forhiscountryorhiscreed,yetitisMinot-able toassertthetruthwithouthumanrespector meanshrinking.TheCatholicsofthecoloniesaremainlyofeitherIrishdescentorextraction,andtheyentertainareasonable prideinthelandoftheirbirth.Itisright todosoandthusremoveprejudicesoften metwith.TheHibernianoftensetbefore thewonderingeyesofthepublicisthe Irishmanwhoistobeseenonthestageofa theatre,orspokenofinstupidcomicsongs calledIrish,butmanufacturedinLondon; anIrishmanwhohasnoexistenceelsewhere. Knowinghoweveronlythismythicalandnot verycreditablespecimen,manystranpers wonderatfindingthattheIrishmenthey meetinreallifehatethefacultyofspeaking Englishgrammaticallymidtheyareamazed thatthereareIrishmenwhohavenotthe richstrongbroguetheyexpected.Irishmen themselvesknowbetter.Theyknowtheir countrymenspeakwellwhentheylike.if thereisabrogue,theyrathergloryinit.It tellsofthedearoldlandthatisnot,and shouldnotheforgotten.Andinnewhomes andinastrangelandtheyperpetuatethe nameofthepeopleandofthecountryof heiroriginbycallingthemselvesIlibernians. Inbringingforwardthetoasthe(theRev. Gentleman)wishedtoaddthatthisuseful Societyhadbeeniuexistencenowsome twelvemonthsinPerth.Foronereasonor another,especially,howeverbecauseitwas notmuchheardof,theaffairsoftheSociety hadnotbeenhithertoinaveryflourishing state.Afterto-nightthecasewouldbe different.Theywouldknowthatthe Societywasopenforthereceptionofmembers.Hewouldadvisethosewhohadnot hithertoknownof,orappreciateditsbenefits toenter.Hewouldsay,especiallytosouse oftheyoungmenlistening,thatthereisa Latinsayingwhichreadsthus:-"Vicesoli." Thereweresomewhomighttranslatethe wordsintotheexpression-Woetothesingle man-Buttheydidnotquitemeanthat. Theymeantthatitwasbettertohavethe assistanceofothers.Thewordsmightbe takenasanexhortationtojointheranksof theSocietywhichwasthetoasthethen subinitted-"TheHibernian-Australasian CatholicBenefitSociety."

TheRev.J.O'RECILYrepliedasfollows:Itappearstomethatthereisaveryfoolish aspectinthecustomwhichrequiresthat whenaperson'shealthistoasted,thatperson shouldrisetorespond.Itisverymuchlike thisBrownmeetshisfriendJonesinthe street."Jones,youareafirstratefellow. "Julies,youareamanofsterlingworth." Jonesreplies."Thankyou,Brown.Iem "afirstratefellow.Youspeakthetruth. "Thereisindeednobettermanintown." Mr.Lucashasjustspokeninverylaudatory termsoftheclergy.Beingoneofthat body,IsupposeIcomeinformyshareof praise.Iamaskedtoacknowledgethecompliment.1doso,butinnospiritofegotism. II1Stsimplyinordertodomyduty.1 thankMr.Lucasfortheveryflatteringterms ofcommendationinwhichhehasspokenof us,andIthankyou,ladiesandgentlemen, fortheemphaticwayinwhichyouhave shownyourconcurrenceinhispraise.In thatpraise,Imustsay,asindutybound, thatIagree.IlehassaidthattheCatholic clergyarefinefellows.'Hehasspoken truth.Theyaretinefellows.Nobetter exist.Mr.Lucasisveryconsiderateandis anxioustosparemywell-knownmodestya olusli.Iamgratefulforhisconsideration butIcanassurehimtherearelittleorno groundsforfear.Mycheeksareofthat classintothecompositionofwhichagood dealofparcLniententers,andIthiukitis prettywelladmittedthatparchmentisasubstanceuponwhichitisratherdifficultto raiseablush.Iwillrecordafact.Ithas beenmyfatetobedeliveredovermorethan onceinmylifetothetendermerciesofthe doctorsforafewmonthsatatime.These gentlemen,backedbyalltheresourcesofthe chemist'sstore,triedtogetablushuponHey cheeks-theblushofhealth.Thereefforts cannotbesaidtohavebeeneminently successful.Muchoftherosyhuedidnot showitselfastheresultoftheirskill.And Iamdisposedtothinkthatwhattheyfailed todo,Mr.Lucas,-highlyasIestimatehis oratoricalpowers-willfinditdifficultto effectAndyetinjusticetomyselfImust saythatIamnotaltogethersocallousasto beincapableofbeingoverpoweredbypraise. Mr.LucashasbeenverylavishinIrisencomiums.WhilsthespokeIthoughtofthe experiencesofanindividualofwhomIheard afewdayshack.Anincautiouswayfarerin thecourseofhiswalkarrivedataspotwhere anewbuildingwasinprocessoferection, aridthepathwasoverhungbyscaffolding. Thinkingnoevil,hedeemeditunnecessary toturnaside.andwalkedstraighton.Just atthatmomentashowerofbrickscame downstartlinghimbytheirprecipitousdescent.Reportdoesnotsaywhetherhewas hurtornot,butasitiscertainthatbrick isofahardertexturethanthehumanskin, andweknowittoheaphysicallawthat whentwosubstancesofunequalconsistency impingeoneachother,thesoftergetsthe worstofit,andastheinformationtohand doessaythatthebricksdidactuallyhithim, wearewithinthelimitsasafetyinsupposingthathisskinwasmoreorlessinjured. Naturallysurprisedattheunceremonious treatment,helookedup."Hiltonupthere. "Whatareyouabout.Lookoutforyour bricks."Yetwhatwastheresponsethink youfromhisfriendabove.Possiblythe natureofthespeaker'sexpostulationtutu misunderstood.Atanyratetheanswer was"Nevermind,Sir.Thankyou,all thesame.Ishallmyselfpickthemup whenIgodown."WhilstMr.Lucaswas speakingIfeltverymuchthesensation whichtheindividualinquestionmusthave experienced.Itseemedtomeasifa showerofbricksintheeloquentencomiums ofmyfriendwasfallingwithstunningeffect aboutmyears.Awishtoexpostulatedid indeedarisewithinmybreast.ButthinkingofthestoryIaskedmyselftowhat purposeshouldIremonstrate.Mr.Lucas mighthaverepliedwiththedelinquent bricklayer."Don'tmindmycompliments. ThemembersoftheSocietyheresangthe Hymn-'FaithofourFathers.' ThenexttoastSt.Patrick's"Branch, wasproposedbyFatherO'RelLY,whosaid,Ihavebeenrequestedtodealwiththe nexttoastontheprogramme,whichisSt. Patrick'sBranchoftheHibernianSociety. Si.Patrick'sBranchisIamhappytosay, atthepresenttime-newtwelvemonths afteritsestablishment-inaveryNoeand satisfactorycondition.Thisfactisassuring, consideringthedifficultiesagainstwhichit hashadtostruggletothepositionitoccupteeWhenitwasfirstformed,the Starofii10Nub'itrungh eorne timeinexistenceinFremantle,andwarty yuuugmenoftheMetropolis-severalof whomwereparticularlyfittedfor workinganinfantsociety-badgivenintheir namestothebranchatthePort.TheSt. Patrick'sthereforestartedunderthedisadvantageofbeingdeprivedoftheservicesof thosewhonaturallymightbeexpected, underothercircumstances,tobeitsbest supporters.Ithadalsotobearupagainst thedishearteningmoraleffectcausedby desertionsfromitsranks,whilststillinits veryinfancy.Butdespitethesemishapswhichwereofsomecontinuance,remember, intheirinfluence-thebranchhasworked itsstayOnwardsmanfullyanddeterminedly andhasachievedaverycreditabledegreeof snceess.Theveryexcellentsoireebeing celebratedunderitsauspicesto-mightspeaks volumesinsupportofthisassertion.There aremanyyoungmeninthistownwhose namesIshouldbegladtoseeinscribedonthe rolloftheStPatrick'sBranch,andalthough FatherBourkehasalreadyspokenoftheadvantagesofferedbythesociety,yetfor thebenefitoftheseyoungmenIwouldwish tomakeafewadditionalobservationsonthe samesubject.

Soonafter,verysoon,hegotapain,amost luckypain.Thepainwasnotabadone, butitwasbadenoughtocompelhimtoinvokeadoctor'sservices.Avisitortwo fromhismedicalattendantandafewbottles ofsomemysteriousstufffromthechemist's andhewaswellagain.Thereonlyremained thebilltopay.Itwasareasonablebillreasonableaccordingtothecustomaryratesof trade-butonreckoninguphefoundthesum totalwasenoughtopaytheweeklycontributiontotheBenefitSocietyforanindefinite period,andthatifhehadjoinelthebranch whenhisfriendfirstinvitedhim,hesould, bytheamountjustpaidonthescoreofhis sickness,beclearonthesociety'sbooks,have hismedicinefornothingandwithalbesomethinginpocket.AcelebratedEnglish humoristhassaidthatitisnoshamefora mantobebittenbyadog-unlessitisthine thesecondtime.Probablytheveryworthy individualofwhomIspeak,thoughtasJosh Billingsdoes,andthatthoughafirstoversightmightbetolerable,tohecaughtasecond timewouldbeapieceofunpardonablefolly. Atanyrate-anditisthemoralofmytale -hewasanimmediatecandidateforadmissiontooursocietyandisnowamostefficient andrespectedmemberofthebranchtowhich bebelongs. Helookeduponitascertainthatabondconnectedthetwosocietiessthebendofa commoncustomofmoderationinthematter ofdrink.Thecardofmembershipinthe benefitsocietywasthusacertificateoftemperanceforthosewhoheldit.Inlooking overthebookofrulesreferredtoearlierin theevening,hefoundonpage2thatmembers ofanybranchonleavingforanotherresidence,orongoingawaytoanothercolony wereentitledtowhatiscalledinthevery termsusedinthebookofrulesa"clearance."Itappearedtobinsthatnothing couldwelltieofgreaterworthtoa youngandunknownmanongoingelsewherethanadocumentofthiskind whichwas,infact,anintroductiontothe verysociety,thatwouldbeofmostservice tohiminastrangeplace-tomenofhis ownrank,religion,andnationality.Itwas, likewiseacertificateofcharacter.Furthe. menoftheH.A.C.B.Societymustbesober toholdtheirstatusandtoreceivethedocumentalludedto.Ilewishedtothankthem fortheirreceptionofthetoastandbefore sittingdownitdeemeditwelltodirectattentiontothemannerinwhichthetwo societiesworkedinmutualassistance.

AsongbyMr.QUINLANcamenext.Mr BCOLLARDthenproposedtheHealthofthe Visitors,whichwasrespondedtobyMr. BURNIIofFremantle.Themostdelightful songoftheeveningfollowed,suingbyMiss Nataurox,whocompletelytooktheaudiencebysurprise,andwasrewardedwitha showerofbouquets.

Wewishhehadbadtheaidofalawyer endowedwiththegeniusandforesight necessaryfortheprocuringofafull hearingfortheHeraldfromitsfirst dateofpublication;afullreviewofits wholetoneandstyleofmanagement fromthebeginning.Theverdictin thetrialwouldhavebeensubstantially thesame,andthepublicwouldhavehad somereadingatoncepleasantandnot altogethervoidofinstruction.Not thattheHeraldwouldhavetakenany hurtfromthefullestrevisalofallthe lively,pungentandbitingthingsitever saidbutacompletelistofallits salliesduringalongperiodofyears would,perhaps,havearrested theattentionofsomewhodo notadverttotheveryharmless, unconvincingandineffectualcharacter ofallsuchstyleofwriting.Itmakes pleasantreadingbutletnoonethinkit dangerousormalicious.Mr.PEARCE tellsusthatGovernorROBINSONandhis PrivateSecretary,GovetnorBARLEE andtheColonialTreasurer-Mr. LEFROY-areonthelistofhissubscribers.Ofcoursetheyare,forthey arenotpeopleinsensibletoacleverand goodjoke,norincapableofatouchof irony.Theyareentirelywiserfolk thantheill-conditionedR.S.V.P.,who tookthefamiliarbadinagequiteau serieuxandmustneedsgiveventtospitefulthingsinretaliation.Hehashad topayforhisbadtemperanditisimpossibletoofferbetterconsolationthan tosay,withmoreforcethanelegance -servehimright.

THEgreatlatitudeallowedinrecent timestothepublicopinionsandcommentsofthepress,madetheprobable resultoftheactionforlibelwhichhad beenpendingforsometimebetween Mr.PEARCEoftheHeraldnewspaper, andtheMessrs.STIRLINGoftheInquirer, amatterofsomeuncertainty.Whocan eversaywithanylikelihoodofcertainty howalawsuitwillend?Whocanever predicttheconclusiontowhichthe twelvegoodmenandtrueofthejury willeventuallyagree? Inthisparticularinstancetheywouldseemto havearrivedataverdictwhichwill approveitselftoeveryunprejudiced mind. Thelibelcontainedintheletterof R.S.V.P.,andpublishedintheopen columnoftheInquirerwasofanunpardonablekind.Towriteinthiscoloey, and,inpointedreferencetocertainindividuals,tosaythat"transportation doesnothumanizeascoundrel;"to piibliclyandunsustainablyassert,ofa particularnewspaper,that"itcaresnot bywhatmisrepresentationandfalsehood itsendcanbefurthered,"mustbedeemed acourseofconductdeservingofchastisementeveninexcessoftheverdictof£.50 damagesandcosts.Alibelofthiskind doesnotasperseandvilify,somuchby dealingwithpresentallegedoffencesof thepartyattacked,asbyrakingupthe faultsofthedistantandwretchedpast; bydraggingagaintothelightofday, thesinsandfolliesofaman'syouthSinsalsowhichthelawhastothelast farthingavenged;whichyearsofblamelessconducthaveatonedfor;andover whichtherefore,notcharity,butdecency,demandsthatthecloakofoblivionshouldbekindlycast. Theuncertainty,astotheverdict,

WecongratulateMr.PEARCEonthe verdictwhichhasbeenaccordedhim. Theattackuponhisgoodnamewas clearandgross,butintakingupthe matterofhisdefencebyasuitat lawheadoptedmeanswhichcannotbe alwaysreckonedonascertaintovindicatetheright.Happilyinthiscase theresultattainedhasbeensuchasto satisfyasenseofjusticeandmeetwith generalapprobation.Itmaynotbein Mr.PEARCE'Spower,asEditorofthe Herald,toalwaysavoidinfuture thepainandanxietyoflitigation, butwehopethathemaynothaveagain tomeetsounfairanattack.Ifbe havetodefendhimselfagain,wetrust itmaybeagainstonewho-tousethe Herald'sownwords-doesnothitbelow thebelt.

THESoiréeheldundertheauspicesof theSt.Patrick'sbranchoftheH.A. C.B.Societyandofwhichparticulars aregiveninanothercolumn,wassuch astoreflectthe,highestcreditonits promoters.Fromwhateverpointof viewitbeconsidered,itmustbepronouncedwithoutashadowofreservation,anUnqualifiedsuccess.Asa demonstration,itwasimpressive,being probably,withtheexceptionofoneor twoofthosemonstertea-meetings celebratedintheTownHall,thelargest gatheringofthekindaverheldinthe colony.Asanentertainment,iswas beyondcavil:neatandtastefuldecorations,avarieddisplayofchoiceviands preparedwithalltheskillforwhichthe Perthladiesarefamous,andaseriesof songscarefullyselected,andbeautifully renderedtotheactOmpoimentofsenor 4

TwofactsarerevealedbythecelebrationoftheSoiréewhichareworthy .ofspecialnote.Intheremarksofmore thanonespeakerdifficultiesarementionedasbesettingSt.Patrick'sBrunch fromitsstartingandashinderingits rapidadvanceandreadydevelopment. Thesumofthesedifficultiesisstated whenwesaythattheBranchhasbeen fromthecommencementnumerically small.Thelackofnumbersisnotitself anecessarycauseoffailure,nomore thantheirpresenceisaninvariable pledgeofsuccess.Yetthefewnessof itssupportersisapttocreateawant ofpublicconfidenceinthestrengthand enduranceofacause,andtobringabout bythemistrustitexcitestheveryresultitissupposedtoforetell.Ifan untowardimpressionhasmadeitsway inthemindsofanyasregardsthe solidityofthefootinguponwhichthe St.Patrick'sBranchstands,suchimpressionmustbedissipatedbytheeclat ofthedemonstrationofwhichwewrite.

Theassociationthatcouldplan,that couldorganize,andthatcouldcarryto asuccessfulissueagatheringofsuch magnitudeunderitsownauspicesalone, assuredlyhasnotinittheelementsof decay.

CHURCHDEBTS.

O'tsofthemostaccustomedpomplainta thatreachestheearsofallwhoclosely connectthemselveswithChurchaffairs isthedolefulcryofdebtonalltides. WhetheritbeonaccountofaChurch, aschool,anasylum,arefuge,ahospital,anorphanageoraughtelseof areligiousorcharitablecharacter,the inevitablestateofmattersseemstobe oneofchronicanduniversalindebtedness.

Quitefamiliarthenarethemournful wailsofstrugglingpriestsandothergood Samaritans,morezealousthandiscreet. Inalltheothercoloniesandinourown, churchdebtsanddebtsforcharitable undertakingsdrawmanyasighfrom benevolentheartsandchecktheprogressofmanyagoodwork.Butofall thechurchdebtsthateverwereheard ofanywhere,thoseforwhichthevenerableArchbishopPI:ItcEta.ofCincinnatiisresponsiblearethemostastounding.Theyamcunttothreequartersof amillionpoundssterling;asummore liketothedebtofanationthanthe liabilityofaparticulardiocese.

shallwehaveaneraofchatitableorganisationsfreefromdebt1-When,a Laceofecclesiasticsandcharitable people,bothgoodchristensandgood financiers1-Averyhighauthoritysays that"thenumberofthesimpleis infinite"and,accordingtothemocking philosopherofCheltea,"theworldis filledbymanymillionsofpeople,mostly fools."Ifthen,wecannothopefor manywhoarewiseandprudent,surely itcannotbefoundimpossibletodevise acheckinrestraintof'somewhoare rashandsimple.Thepersonsmeant arethosewhounwiselycontractdebts forworthyobjectswhosegoodintentions,however,donothinderthedisadvantagesoftheirproceedings.The remedysoughtfor,isasomething,that wouldaltogetherhindercharitablepeople fromgettingintodebt,or,ifthatshould beimpossible,thatwouldcurtailthem intherangeandmagnitudeoftheir burdensomeoperations.

TheSt.Patrick'sbranch-andthis isthesecondfacttoattractattentionhas,besideitsowninherentvigour,a sourceofstrengthextrinsictoitself. Fewhutmusthavenoticed-aswedid withpleasure-thelargesupportwhich theSoirdereceivedfromtheconcourse ofFremantlevisitors.Asteamer-our oldacquaintancetheLadyStirlinghadbeencharteredfortheoccasionand conveyedtotheMetroFolisaconsiderablecontingentofPortHiberniausand theirimmediatefriends.Thereisa meaninginthecircumstancebeyond thatwhichsuperficialobserverswill alonediscerninitasanexpressionof kindlygoodwilLThevariousbranches oftheH.A.C.BenefitSocietyareoneoneininterest,oneinwelfare,onein success.Unitedbytheircommonsubmissiontoacentralgovernmentthat overlooksthemanagementandinpart isresponsibleforthesafetyoftheir funds,boundtogetherbyacommunity ofaimsandtheirseparatezealforthe honourofacommonname,obligedeven bytheirconstitutionundercertainwell definedlaws,toaideachothershould pecuniaryneedsarise,thewelfareofeachbranch,itscreditandits characterareaffectedbeneficiallyorthe reverse,bytheprosperityorillluckof all.Threebranchesoftheassociation arealreadyinexistenceinWestAustraliaeAfourthatGeraldtononly awaitsthearrivalofthenecessary authorizationtoenteruponitscareer. Theregistersofthefourdisplayor willdisplaywithinthecourseofafew weeksanaggregateofcloseonahundrednames.Norisittobeoverlookedthatthesenamesrepresentthe mostenergetic,themostsaving,the moststeady-infactthecreamofour youngmen.Itisthereforeasafeconclusionthattriedbythestrictestcommercialtests,theLI.A.C.B.Societyin thiscolonymaybepronouncedasafe speculation,andthatthosedesirousto secureforthemselvesandfamiliesthe advantagesbenefitsocietiesprofess toprovide,mayunhesitatinglycommitthemselvestotheventure ofjoiningitsranks,whetherit bebyclaimingadmissiontotheSt. Patrick'sbranchofPerth,theStarof theSea,atFremantle,theShamrock, atYork,orthestillunchristenedbody atGeraldton.

ArchbishopPURCELLcontractedalmostinnumerabledebtsinmuchthe samewayasallsuchobligationsare incurred.Everygoodandzealous priesthasthehonorandgloryofGOD atheart.Inthecourseofhisministrationshe,perhaps,noticessomereligious wanturgentlydemandingattentionsomeobjectofmanifestreligiousutility. He,mostlikely,putsupwiththewant foratime,butthehonorofGooand thegoodofreligioneverspurhimon. Hecannotbrookdelay.Hemusthave whatissomuchneeded.Moreimpulsivethancautious,hegoestoaBank, arrangesforanoverdraftandlo!-the presentwantsofhischurcharesupplied.Unhappilythereisadrawback tohisfelicity.Adebthasbeencontracted;thedebtbearsinterest; interestrunsup;inafewyearsthe interestwhichhasnot,orcouldnot,be paidisaddedtothecapitalloanandin theend-tbereisthecrushingsumdue; thewearyconsciousnessofanobligationwhichcanhardlybedischarged. InsomewhatthiswisedidArchbishop PURCELL-aswegatherfromhisstatementprintedinanotherpage-bring troubleonhisownvenerablehead.The goodBishop,somefortyyearsago, foundnearlyeveryreligiousrequirementwantingtohisnewdiocese.He wentintodebtforallhesawwanting. Missionaries,churches,schools,seminaries,orphanagesandotherbenevolent institutionswereallsupplied.Creditors wereastonishinglyobligingandthe goodBishopseemstohavethought verylittleindeedoftheinevitableday ofreckoning.Howeverlongdelayed, itcameatlast.Onallsidesllis Grace'sgoodness,simplicityandapostolicvirtuesareadmitted,buthis financialqualificationswereofthe poorestandmostpeculiar.Duringall theyearsofhisEpiscopate,nextto nothingseemstohavebeenpaidback, andnowthedebt,withinterestand compoundinterestadded,sumsupto thestupendousamountalreadymentioned.

Nottheleastofthehardshipstobe bornebygoodpeoplewhogetintodebt, isthenecessityofpayingawaylarge percentagesininterestontheirloans.In theinstanceofDr.PURCELL,liesays theoriginalsumborrowedwasonly aboutone-seventhofwhatisnowdue. Thisisanextremecase,butitwould notbedifficulttoallegeexamples,ona smallerscale,inwhichcomparatively largesumsininteresthadtobepaidaway formoneyborrowed.Itiswithinour ownexperience,thatinGawler,South Australia,over£200interesthad,inthe courseofyears,tobepaidtotheBank ofAdelaideforaloanof£600.To personswhoarenotmuchcognizantof, ormuchimbuedwithbusinessprinciples, interesttosuchanextentseemsmoney thrownaway.Contributedfordirectly charitablepurposes,itisappliedtomeet theclaimsofbankersorothermenof business;while,hadnodebtbeenin question,itwouldhavebeenavailable fortheobjectsimmediatelyintended. BearinginmindthenthegoodAmencanBishop'stroubles,andnotforgetting anxietiesnearerhomethatmightbe adduced,itmaywellbeasked:-When

HORTICULTURALSnowNEWCASTLE.-

ThelateHorticulturalShowatNewcastle wasnotasuccess.Itissurprising,thatonly twoexhibitorswerefoundtoavailthemselves oftheadvantagesheldoutbytheSociety. Thecauseofthisfailureisattributedto varioussources.Ifwemaygiveanopinion, wethinkitisduetoapathysimplyand purelyonthepartofthosewhoshouldtake alivelyinterestintheSociety.

DUBLINCAB-DRIVERS.-Morethanthree fourthsofthearticleslostinDublincabs lastyearwerebroughttotheCastleYardby thedrivers,andthearticlesthusgivenup includedgoldrings,bracelets,guns,revolvers,opera-glasses,andotherarticlesofmuch value.Morethanthis,thirteensovereigns andsixteenhalf-sovereigns,given.byfares inmistakesfurshillingsandsixpences,were alsobroughttotheCastleYardbythedrivers, anextraordinaryproofofthesterlinghonesty oftheDublincab-driver,andthenoblemannerinwhichherisessuperiortotemptation. RELIGIOUSINSTRUCTIONINSCHOOLS.-

Thequestionofimpartingreligiousinstructioninpublicschoolsisoccupyingtheminds ofourProtestantfriendsatlast.Afewyears ago,beforethepassingoftheElementary EducationAct,theideaofreligioustraining formingpartoftheschoolcurriculumwas scoutedbyourfriends,andweweretoldthat "atthemother'sknee"wastheproperplace forreligiousteaching.Wearegladtofind thematterhasbeenbetterconsidered,and thatthenecessityforreligioninourpublic schoolsisacknowledged.Wealways,were ofthisopinionourselvesnotwithstandingthe sophismsofadversaries.

Mr.SheltonandMr.E.A.Stone.The showofhandswasdeclaredtobeinfavour ofMr.Shantou.Mr.Stonedemandedapoll. Towardsthehourforclosingsomeexcitementwascreated,owingprobablytothe' doubtfulresultofthecontest.Fromthe commencementofthevotingthecandidates hadbeenneckandnecik,andatfouro'clock -anhourbeforetheclosingofthepoll-the numberofvotesoneithersidewasequal. VOLTAIREANDTHEJESUITS.-TheJesuit Fathershaveanewwitnesstocharacter whomtheymayopposetothechargeswhich M.PaulBertandothershaverakedoutof bookswhichwereforthemostpartnoteven writtenbymembersoftheirsociety.Thisis nootherthanVoltairehimself,who,apropos ofPascal'sdenunciations,wroteasfollows "DuringsevenyearswhichIpassedina Jesuithouse,whatdidIseethereAlife themostlaboriousandfrugal,allthehours dividedbetweenthecareofusandtheexercisesoftheiraustereprofession.Iappealto thetestimonyofthousandsofmeneducatedas Iwasandthereforemyastonishmentnever ceasesthatanyonecanaccusethem(the Jesuits)ofteachingacorruptingmorality." WeassembletowelcomeyourLordship amongstusthisdaybecausewearesurethat aswedrawcloserthebondsofloveandconfidencewhichuniteustothepastorofour souls,themeanstocombatthisaswellasall othervicesareeasilyfoundforthelooking fornearathand.

The6thofNovemberhascomeandgone, andwefeeledifiedwiththesoothingrecollectionswhichthedayandtheeventhave inspired.Ontheafternoonofthe4th,souse younggentlemenmightbeseenwending theirway-likebushmenwithrugsontheir shoulders-upthescrubbyslopeofMount Clarence,onthesummitofwhichaquantity ofbrushwoodandinflammablematerialhad beenalreadypiled.Theenthusiasmofthese overgrownboyswasputtothetest,whenthe shadesofeveninghadsetin,forwaggery truetoitstraditionswasonthealerttodefeattheGuyFauxpartyoftheiranticipatedpleasurebyfiringthepilethatevening. "Howintheworlddoyouexpect yourchildreneventolearntolovethe rightandtrue,ifyouwillnotteach themthehistoryoftherightandtrue? Everyhumanchildisabundleof spiritualpossibilities.Hehasvarious faculties,aswecallthem,facilitiesfor thinkingandfeelingincertaindirections. Amongstothers,hehasfacilitiesforfeelingandthinkinginthereligionsand moraldirections.Thenaturalstimulus

Well,somearereadytoexclaim,we agreewithyousofar,wethinkthatour childrenshouldbemadetostudythe Bibleandthehistoryofourrace.But whymaythisnotbedonebyministers ofreligionandinourexistingschoolbooks?Idonothesitatetosaythat itcannotbedonebyministersofreligion.Theyhavenotthetime,especiallyinourlargecountrydistricts. Theyhavenotthespecialtrainingwhich isnecessaryforthework.Andifthey hadboth,theyhavenottheschoolmaster'sauthoritytocommandthe children'sattendance.Howcanyou expectchildrentogiveuppartoftheir playtimetoworkatthemereinvitation oftheminister?Suchauattemptmust fail,andithasalreadyfailedwhenit wastriedintwoMelbourneparishes underthemostfavorableconditions. Theministersineachofthesecases wereabletogetnomorethan20ofthe wholenumberoftheStateSchool childreninthedistricts.Whatisthe useofcommittingthethurchofChristto aneffort,whichbytheveryconditions underwhichitismadematfail?Well, perhapsthatmaybeso,othersmightobject;stillIdon'tseewhyhistory,both sacredandsecular,mightnotbetaught inourreadingbooks.Byagloriousinconsistencysomeexcellentlittlehymns arestillretainedinourStateschool rattlingbooks.Butyouknowthey havenobusinesstobethere.The mentionofGodinsuchhymnsisdecidedlyunsecular.Atheistsandknownothingshavetherighttoobjectto suchhymns,andifyousaymuchabout them,willobjectandgetthemturned out.Always,ifyoudoanillogicalor inconsistentthing,youwillfindyourselfputsoonerorlaterintoanimpossibleposition-apositionfromwhich youwillhavetorecede,Ithassohappenedalreadywithourclassbooks. BullofPopePaulIII.in1540.At thedeathofthesaintthesocietyhad aboutonehundredcollegesinvarious partsofEurope,besidesnumerousmissionariesintheEast,inAfrica,and America.St.Ignatiuswasthefirst generalofthesociety,andJamesLainez wasthesecond,whoappearstohave hadtheprincipalshareinformingthe constitutionsofthesociety.Theschools oftheJesuitsweresopopularinParis thattheprofessorsoftheUniversity werejealousoftheirsuccess,andsought byunworthymeanstoputthemdown; butitwasseenthatthesocietyhadso successfullystoppedthespreadofProtestantism,thattheParliamentwould notbeguidedbytheUniversityin drivingawaythesocietyfromParisat thattime,thoughtheJesuitswere banishedin1.594,butrecalledtenyears afterwards.TheMissionsoftheJesuits formanotablefeatureinmodernhistory. InIndiaSt.FrancisXavierisrecorded tohavebaptiedamillionpagans.lie afterwardswenttoJapan,andlaidthe foundationofthemostsuccessfulmissionaryworkofmoderntimes;though afterwardsobliteratedbydiabolicalpersecution.InChinatheJesuitshad, between1581and1681,onehundred andtwenty-sixmissionaries,andconvertedseveralhundredthousandpagans. EuropeisintiehtedtotheJesuitsforits firstknowledgeoftheinternalcondition ofthatvastempire.InSouthAmerica themissionsofthesocietyweremarvellous.TheJesuitsobtainedfiomthe Spanishgovt.rmutatadeclarationthat allconvertedWiensshouldbefree, andthatthesocietymightformthere converts.intogoverinueutsorreductions, whichwasmustsuccessfullydonein Paraguay.AbouttwohundredthousandwereunitedbytheJesuits;and togetherwithChristianityweretaught theartsofcivilizedlifethosewereno lawsuits,andnotaxesamongthem, andthisrulecontinuedfor150years. Jealousyagainstthesocietyexistednot onlyinParis,butalsoiuSpainand Sardinia,LiedsomeotherEuropean countsics.Atlastitsenemiesprevailed onPopeClementXIV.tosuppressthe ...eietyin1776.Atthattimeithad thenmerethan22,000members,mere thanhalfofwhomwerepriests,669 colleges,and273missions,besidesvery manyotherestablishments.PiusVII. in1814re-establishedthesociety,which hassincebeenactivelyatworkinevery landpromotinglearninginallits branchesonthebasisoftrueChristianity.

Tomyfriendsandthepublic: 1deemitmydutytomakeknownto theverylargenumberofpersonsto whom1happentobemoreorless knowninEuropeandintheUnited States,thatintheeightiethyearofmy ageandthelorty-firthyearofmyepiscopate,Iamburdenedwithaheavydebt, whichIantunahletoliquidate.The debt,asallwhoknowmeareaware, wasnotcontractedbywaste,highliving,orextravagance.Itismyonly consolationthatmyconsciencebearsnme thistestimony,anditisacknowledged byCatholicsandProtestants,aswellas bycitizensofeveryandnoreligion. Itisaskedhow1cametooweso much.Imustanswerfrankly.1was bornofpoorparents,whohadtostint themselvestogivemeaneducation,the besttheirmeansallowedorthetown afforded,toattainthepositioninlife forwhichIwasconsecrated,ifGodso pleased,beforeIwasborn.Ifeltthat myonlychalicewastocometoAmerica andstudyforthepriesthood.When1 succeededinthisregard,Ineither soughtnorexpectedtoberich.Food andraimentwasallIreceived,andwith these,Imaypresumetosayso,likeSt. Paul,Iwasperfectlycontented.Iwas senttoParisbythevenerableand saintlyDubois,FirstSuperiorofMount St.MarySeminary,andafterwards BishopofNewYork.Onmyreturn aspriest,Icontinuedtoteachaswell asIcouldinthattime-honoredschool ofthepriesthooduntilIwasmade bishopandsenttoCinsinuati.Inthis sphere,asinmyearlierlife,1beganso poorthatIhadtoborrow£60forray travellingexpensesformyselfand twoorthreestudentsanddomestics. ThenIhadsoontocontractdebtsfor themanywantsofanewdiocese.For thisdebt1hadtopayinterest,andthis interestgrowingyearly,nowmakes,accordingtothereportofthetrusteesappointtdtoexaminetheaccountsand liabilitiesofthediocese,morethanhalf oftheindebtnessoftimediocese.Of thedebtcontractedbythefinancial agentofthediocese,1thinkitcanbe safelysaidthatnutmorethan£100,000 wasmoneydepositedwithhimu.The restistheresultofcompoundinterest.

Oneofthemuststirringdiscourses whichthisgentlemanhasdelivered bearsthesuggestivetitleof"Gleanings,"andtreatsofthebeautifulstory ofRuthandBoaz.Itisaltogetheran admirableexampleofthatreverent,yet familiar,modeof(halingwithScripture whichpreacherslikeMr.Spurgeonhave alreadymadesomeattempttoestablish inthiscountry.ButMr.Spurgeon's happiesteffortsseempooranddullby comparisonwiththemoredaringachievementsofDr.Talmage.Boaz'sattachmenttoRuthis,wearetold,anotable instanceof"loveatfirstsight."This humblegleaner,whohadbeeninduced tohavehernativelandthrough"an tuidyingaffectienforhermother-in-law," issuddenlyandbyararestrokeofgood fortune"affiancedtooneofthebest familiesinJudah."NotthatDr.Talwagewouldhavehishearerssuppose thatthiswasaltogetherariesalliancefor Beaz.Naomi,heiscarefultoimpress uponthem,hadonceseenbetterdays. "Isuppose,"hesays,"that,when Naotni'shusbandwasliving,andthey badplentyofmoney,andallthingswent *ell,theyhadagreatmanycallers;" andhethencontraststheseprosperous timeswithherseasonofmisfortune, whenheventurestoassume"shewas notmuchtroubledwithcullers."It willbeobservedhowthus,byasingle strokeofgenius,Dr.Talmagecontrives topresentavividpictureofNaomi'stoleratedinthiscountry,andtheex-

TheCatholicbishopsofthecountry havemademetheirdebtorforeverby theirofferofassistance.Thooguunworthyofsuchuniversalkindness,stillI rejoiceoveritbecauseitgivesmethehope ofmeetingwyobligations.Itcheersme thatthecharityofsomanyhasbeen stirredbythemisfortunesofanold missionarybishopwhoseraceisnearly run.

Asaproofofthis,Iwillstateoneof manyfactsthathavecometolight.Yesterdayacreditorcalledwithaclaimof £250.Inpresentingit,headmitted that1:160ofthatamountwasinterest, andexpressedhisreadinesstoaccept forit£60theoriginaldeposit.The claimsofhundredsareofthesame nature.Theindebtednessofthediocese inequitydoesnotamounttomore than£200,000,toplaceitatits highestfigure.Inaccountingforthe moneyloanedordepositedwiththe financialagentofthediocese,thetrus teesandothershaveoverlookedone verylargeitemofexpenses;until1852 nogeneralcollectionwasevertakenup inthisdioceseforthesupportofthe diocesanseminary.Fortwentyyears, therefore,thebnrdenofeducating priestsfelluponmyfinancialagent.
