ThespecialreporteroftheFreeman's JournalwritingfromEnnis,says:Oneoftheclosestelectionsofrecent years,andonethateverytowninthe countrywatchedwithstrainedattention, hasjustconcludedinEnnis.The effectsofthiselectionareelsewhere discussed,thepresentchroniclerhas onlytodealwiththeincidentsofthe contest.Theincidentsoftheelection werefew.Thoughanoccasionofintenseexcitementtherewasduringthe earlypartofthedayagreatoutward calm.Mr.Finiganremainedinand aboutthecourt-houseallday-one timebewasinconversationwithsome oftheclergymenwhohadbeenmost forcibleinopposinghim,ortalkingto Mr.Fitzgerald,orconsultingwithsome ofhisgreen-decoratedvolunteers.Mr. O'Brienhurriedfromoneboothtoanother,andseemedtohavenotimeto speaktoanybody.Mr.Pitmenlooked thecarewornorganizerofthewhole business.Nowhewasveryvigorously cautioningoneofMr.O'Brien'sagents for"doingthebusinessofthepoliceman,"showingavoterintoabooth, againhewasbusyinstructinghis lieutenants,andwithallthishefound timetoexchangecommonplaceswith theresidentmagistrate,Captain M'Ternan,orsomeotherloyalmagistrate.Mr.Fitzgerald,theConservative candidate,hassomethingtheairof lajeunessedoreeabouthim;heworehis hatsidewayswelloveroneeye,and lookedanythingbutaneageraspirant forParliamentaryhonours.Therewas aknotofyoungmenandagedpoliticiansgatheredintheentrancehallof thecourt-house,withwhomitwas fashionabletoexchangewitticisms. TwoofMr.O'Brien'sassentingnominatorsastheywentintookoccasionto makeapublicdeclarationthattheyintendedtovoteforMr.Finigan,whether thiswasonlytheirtricks,'asabystandercharacterisedit,ornot,itisimpossibletosay,butofcourseagood manytookitmostseriously.There wereveryfewclergymenwhocame nearthecourt-house.Inadditionto theordinarypoliceofthetown,numerousenoughinallconscience,therewere strongreinforcementsfromthecountry, andthebatchesofpoliceingreyovercoats,withriflesslungontheirbacks, shouldered,orheldundertheirarms,as theybivouacked,lounged,andsquatted aboutthestreetsandalongtheroadto tothecourt-house,gavequiteabeleagueredaspecttothetown.The pollingwasatfirstverybrisk,butabout 11o'clock120hadpolled,andthere wasastagnationinthebusiness.The pollclerkscameoutandstretchedthemselvesandhadapipe.Thevoters dribbledinagain,andat1o'clock,178 hadpolled.Mr.Parnellcameoutand announcedhisopinionthatMr.Finigan wasattheheadofthepoll,Mr.Fitzgeraldsecond,andMr.O'Brienthird. Athalf-pasttwo,212voteswererecorded,andwhenthepollclosedatfive, 216hadvoted.Forsometwenty minutesnothingwasdone;thenthe ballotboxesweretakentothegrand juryroomtobecounted.Justthen Mr.O'Brienleftthecourt-housewitha friendandwalkedtohislodgings.As hegotoutoutsidethegateshewasreceivedwithconsiderablegroaning.The peoplebegantocrowduparoundthe gates,andsomederisivecheering heraldedtheapproachofCounty-InspectorSmythandsomemountedpolice. Whilepeoplewereanticipatingthatthey wouldhavetowaithalf-an-hourmore, shoutsof"Finigan!""Finigan!" wereheardfromthebackofthecourthouse,andsomeyoungmenwereseen dashingtowardsthegate.Itwasjust aquartertosix.Thecrywasimmediatelycaughtupandpassedthrough aquarterofamileofgroupsintothe veryheartofthetown.Ringingcheers burstoutonallsides,theconstabulary horsesplunge"andreared,andeveryone seemedtemporarilydeprivedoftheir steadiness,andgivenuptouncontrollableexcitement,shakinghandswith theirneighboursandroaringandshout-

Thewildenthusiasmwithwhichthe resultwasreceivedlastedforaquarter ofanhour,andthenabigcrowdassembledmoundtheO'Connellmonument.

Mr.J.L.Finigac,M.P.,downwhose facetheperspirationpouredlikerain, shoutedouthisthanksfurthehonour donetohim(cheers).Heshouldnow beginthosedutiesforwhichtheyhad selectedhim.AsEnnishadtheglory in1828ofbeginningtheworkofCatholicEmancipation,soEnnisto-dayhad struckagreatblowinthebattleof nationalindependence(cheers)sonobly andgenerouslybegunbythechiefof theIrishpeople,CharlesStewartParnell(cheers).Astheywerebrave,so letthembegenerous,andforgivethose whohailopposedthem-forgive,but notforget.IIcwantedthewtoform solidbodies,andmakeconvertsofthose whohadforthelustfewweeksbeen determinedtounderminethegreat nationalcause(cheers).Whenhetook hisseatintheHouseofCommonshe shouldtakecuretolettheHouseknow thathewasamessengerofwar(loud cheers).

Mr.Finigan-Amessengerofwar untilafullandamplemeasureofjustice wasdonetoourgreat,glorious,andimmortalcountry(cheers).

TherewerecallsforMr.Parnell,and whenhecameforwardtheentireassemblagecheeredandwavedtheirhats. Hespokeundertheinfluenceofgreat emotion.Havingexpressedhisthanks totheelectorsforthemannerinwhich theyhadacted,hesaidtheyhadsenta messengertoEnglandthatshewould trembleat(cheers).Itwasnotthat EnnishadbeatenaWhigplace-hunter andTorylandlord(cheers)-notalone thattheyhadprovedthefaiththatwas sodeep-seatedinthem,buttheyhail struckanotewhichwouldbefollowed inscoresofconstituenciesthroughout Ireland(hearandcheers).Theemotion thatthrilledhisheartconqueredhis utterance.Heknewtheywouldforgive him,buthewouldsay,ifitwaswith hislastutterance,"Welldone,Clarewelldone,Enuis"(loudandprolonged applause).

broughttobearagainsthim.Hedid notwishtosayanoffensiveword.to anyone.Thebattlewasnowwon,and leteverymanshakehandswiththose whowereopposedtothem.Thespeeches havingended,Messrs.Finigan,Parnell, andMaddenreturnedtoCarmody's Hotel,fromwhence,ateighto'clock, theywereescortedtotherailwaybyan immenseprocessionofthetradesand nationalists,decoratedwithgreenrosettes andthebandandbannersofthetrades, cheersofvictoryresoundinginevery quarter.Mr.O'Brien,whothoughtto takehisdeparturequietly,wasobserved bythemultitude,andwasnotallowed toproceedbythesameroad.Hehad togoonbycartothe'ClareCastle station.Theexpressionoffeelingover theelectionwasverysignificant.

ThereporteroftheCorkExaminer writesfrontLimerickJunction:-

severalsentimentswereproposedand cordiallyechoed.Someonecalled "AcheerforHomeRule,"anda heartyoutburstfollowed.Another personcappeditwith"Acheerfor somethingbetter,"andtheapplausewas equallyenthusiastic.Ateleveno'clock thetrainbearingSirStaffordNorthcote'sbetenoirandhislatestdisciple lefttheLimerickJunction.Therewas ashortstayatPallasabouta-quarterto twelve.Acoupleofpolicemenwith riflesandafewotherpersonspeered curiouslyintothecarriage,butthere wasnodemonstration.AttheLimerickJunctionthedistinguishedtravellerswererecognisedbynoone.They changedintothemail-train,andwere sooncarriedalongtoDublin.

AtelegramintheFreeman,dated Limerick,Sunday,says:-

ThereturnofMr.Finigancreated greatenthusiasmheroto-day.Bands paradedthestreetsandcheerswere givenforthepopularcandidate,while ontheotherhandgreatregretwasexpressedthatMr.Fitzgerald,apopular Conservativelandlord,whohadthevotes ofmanyCatholicConservatives,wasnot returned.

WhenthereturnofMr.Finiganwas madeknownonSaturdaynightnothing couldexceedtheent.rus.asmofthe populace.TheadmirersofMessrs. FiniganandParnellraninhundreds fromthecourthousecheeringandproclaimingthevictory.Astheydidso theinhabitantsturnedoutenmasseto uniteintheacclamations.Everywindow wasfilledwithladyoccupants,who wavedwhitehandkerchiefsinacknowledgmentoftheirdelight.Suchanuniversalexpressionofgratificationwas neverbefore,sincethedaysofO'Connell, witnessedinhistoricEnnis.Theenthusiasmknewnobounds,butwhen Messrs.Finigan,Parnell,andMadden passedonthroughthestreetstothe O'ConnellMonumenttoreturnthanks, theovationtheyreceivedbafflesdescription.Havingarrivedthere,Mr. Finigan,whoworeahandsomerosette oforangeandgreen,asdidalsoMr. ParnellandMr.Madden,whoaccompaniedhimthereto,ascendedthebaseof thestatueamidstthecheersofover 4,000persons.Mr.Finiganreturned thanksforthehonourconferredupon himinhavinggainedtheday,which, hesaidinhalfanhour,whenitbecame knowntoLordBeaconsfieldandMr. Lowther,wouldputpainsintheir stomachs.Hereiteratedhisprinciples ofnationality,andonbeinghandeda greenbannerof'82pledgedhimself'to endeavourtocarryouttheprinciplesof' thepatriotsofGhatera.Mr.Pullen,. whowasevidentlyoverjoyed,congratulatedthemonthevictoryachievednotwithstandingtheexpressionsofodium

Thepopularexcitementwhichfollowed onthedeclarationofthepoll,am'.the proceedingsattheO'ConnellMonument brokeoutagainasthetimeapproached forthenewly-electedmembertoleave thetown,asMr.Parnellintendstobe inhisplacewhentheIrishEstimates comeon,andMr,lieirininngdsto t:Ikehissenta;,i.onn,thegliiiirill' hasmadetheretain,othewrit.At eighto'clocka1.1:1-, andacl,,wd ofabouttwothen-and,marshalledill winethinglikemilitaryflint!,were gatheredinthenarrowstreetopposite Carmody'shotel.AuntrelentedelweringMr.Finigan(wileout,holdingall '82flaginhishand liewas followedbyMr.Paltali,byNII..M. G.Considine,andby%fr.Madden, whoattendedasadeputationfromthe LiverpoolbranchoftheHorneRule Confederation.l'ire-egentlementook uptheirplacesinthecentreofthe escort,thebandheatup,thecolours werewaved,andtheprocession,shoutingandcheering,aridapplaudedlrythe bystandersandhundredsoflookers-on fromthewindows,movedslowlyonits waytothestation.Arrivedatthe platformthecrowdwastoodenseto beaccommodated,anditstrucksomeone torangethemenalongthelinofor somehundredsofyards,sothatwhen thetrainmovedoffvolleysofcheers accompanieditforsomedistance.To getthetwohonorablemembersinto theircarriagenecessitatedanalmost handtohandencounter.Theywere partlydraggedandpartlypushed throughtheircrowdofadmirers.Mr. Finigangotinfirst,butMr.Parnell struggledfornearlyfiveminuteswithin ayardofthecarriagedoorbeforelie succeededintakingsanctuary.Then thetrainmovedidrpastashoutingline ofmen,amidwhenwewerewelloutof thestationitwasdiscoveredthatfive menwereridingonthecarriagesteps, andinthatprecariousposition,doubly dangerousincrossingtheFergusBridge, theyrodetothenextstation.At Clarecastletherewasalargecrowd, andprominentontheplatformwereMr. O'Brien,Q.C.,aridthehighsheriff,who haddrivenoverfromEnnis.These gentlemengotintoafirst-classcarriage nexttoMr.Parnell'sparty.The crowdpressedforwardtoseethenew member,butamosthonorabledelicacy offeelingpreventedtheleastcheer beinggiven.Atthenextstationthe Rev.Mr.Nolan,C.C.,ofLimerick.was introducedtoMr.Finigan,androde withhimtoLimerick.AtCratloeMr. O'Brienandthehighsheriffleftthe traintodrivetothelatter'sresidence, andaCatholicclergymancameforward andshookhandswiththetwomembers. AtLongPavementsomehalf-a-dozen peoplesalutedthem,butwhenLimeickwasreachedtherewasabigcrowd ontheplatformwhocheeredforParnell,Finigan,Ennis,Considine,andT. D.Sullivan.Severalminuteswere spentinhand-shaking,duringwhicha soldierinuniformcameforwardand askedtobeallowedtoshakehands,with "themanwhokilledthecat,"andthere wasrenewedcheeringasMr.Parnell compliedwiththerequest.Thethreequartersofanhour'sdelaywhich followedwasspentbythetwomembers inconversationwiththeLimerickdeputation.whonumberedmanymennoted forextremeopinions.Ataquarterto elevenitwastimetotakeseatsinthe trainforthejunction.Allontheplatform seemedtobeinacheeringhumour,and

ThenewM.P.hasissuedthefollowingaddresstohisconstituents:Ibegtotendermymostsincerethanks tothe"gallant83"whoreturnedme triumphantattheheadofthepollon Saturdaylast.Ialsomustthankmost warmlythenon-electorswhocanvassed ibrandsupportedmycandidaturewith suchenergyandunflaggingzeal.Henceforthmybustendeavoursshallbedevoted tothefurtheranceoftheprincipleof legislativeindependenceforIreland,and mybestattentionshallbegiventothe settlementofthelaudquestion,tenant right,andapeasantproprietary.Householdsuffrage,too,mustbewoninorder thatthepeoplemayhaveavoiceinthe governmentofthecountry.Tothese andallotherquestionsaffectingtheinterestsofthetownwhichInowhave thehonourtorepresentIshalldevote myunremittingattention.Iam,Electors andPeopleofEnnis, Yourmostobedientservant, JAMESLYSAGHTFINIGAlf.

JusticetoIreland.

FromthelatestEnglishfilestohand, welearnthattheIrishUniversitySill wasrushedhurriedlythroughcommittee, andhasnowbecomelaw.The O'Docoghuehadanoticeonthepaper ofhisintentiontomovetherejectionof themeasurealtogether,butinconsequenceofcertainrepresentationsmade tohim,theamendmentwaswithdrawn. Mr.Finigan,thenewlyelectedmember forEnnis,madehismaidenspeechin theHouseofCommons,pointingout thatitwasnotaquestionofpayingout ofEnglishfundsfortheeducationofthe Irishpeople.Itwasmerelyaskingfor moneythatfairlybelongedtothem,and noIrishCatholiccouldrestsatisfied untilthatHousebaddoneanactof reparationtoCatholicIreland,andan actofreparationtothegeneralprinciples ofliberty,justice,andfreedom.Not onlyhavetheCatholicmembersofthe HouseofCommonsspokenoutboldly onthismostimportantquestion,but ProtestantslikeDr.PlayfairhaveOne equaljusticetotheclaimsofIreland. 5.Clearly,inthecaseofservices renderedinanypartoftheEmpireto theEmpireatlarge,theCrowncan, ontheadvice.ofaSecretaryofState, rewardsuchservicesbyhonoursor otherwise.Butinthecaseof'anycolonywherearepresentativeConstitutionexists,inreferencetoservicesrenderedinsuchcolonyinregardtoits internalmanagementoritsinternal politicalaffairs,theCrowncannot,I respectfullybelieve,constitutionallybestowsuchhonourswithouttheadviceof Ministers,whoareresponsibletothe peopleofthatcolony.TheSecretary ofStateisnotsoinanywaywhatever.

Ninety-ninepeopleoutofahundred, ifSpiritualismismentioned,willputit asidewiththecalmassurancethatitis allimposture,trickery,anddeceit,and willregardintheirheartofheartsany questioningoftheirdictumasbetoking afeebleintellect,or,whatisstillmore contemptibleintheireyes,atendency tosuperstitions.Politenessmay,indeed,restraintheirexpressionofthis opinion,andtheymaycontentthemselveswithreferringthedoubterof theirdecisiontoNisittheperformances ofMessrs.MashelyneandCooke.If, inreply,itissuggestedthatthereisa vastamountofevidenceonthephenomenacalledspiritualisticwhollyinexplicableevensbythehelpofthoseclever andamusingjugglers,thissuggestion isusuallyquitefruitless.AnEnglish man'ssupremeconfidenceinhisjudgmentisnutsotobeshaken.Nothing willinducehimtobelievethatthereis anythingpreternaturalinthesemanifestations.Heisindignantthathe,in thisenlightenedera,shouldbecalled upoatoentertaintalessavouringofthe darkages,withtheirsorceryandnecromancyandwitchcraft.Itisa firstprinciplewithhimthatnothing happensinthesedays(whatevermay havebeenthecaseinnditnantiquity), forwhichasufficientexplanationmay nutbefoundinphysicalcausesofone kindoranother.Andifthefactsare againstthisprinciple,somuchthe worseforthefacts.

Thereisexactlyasmuchauthorityfor believinginthemiraclesofMoses. Wehavethesamewarrantforthe statementthatSimonMagus,"used sorceryandbewitchedthepeopleof Samaria"aswehavefortherelationof thesignsandwonderswroughtbythe holyApostles.Thebooksofthosewho usedunlawfulartswereburetbysuch oftheirpossessorsascameunderthe influenceofthepreacherofpenance, whetherinJerusaleminnthefirstcentury,orinFlorenceinthefifteenth. Witchcraftisreprobatedalikebythe MosaicCole,theApostolicEpistles, andtheCanonsofCouncils.DiabolicalpossessionisoneofthecommonestfactsmentionedbytheEvangelists,andinallagesoftheChurcha specialorderofministryhasexisted forthesuccourandreliefofpersonsso afflictedbytheenemyofmankind. When,therefore,aCatholicis broughtfacetofacewiththeoccult phenomenaoftheday,itdoesnotoccur tohimthatimpostureistheonlysolutionofthem.Theymaybeduetoimposturetheymaynottheymaybe explicablebylawsofnature(asthe phraseis)atpresentunknowntons,or theymaybe,instruth,manifestationsof thesupernatural.Andinthislastcase therearisesthefurtherquestion-Are theyfromaboveorfrombelow?from GodorfrontstheevilSpirit?With regardtothepresentmatterofSpiritualism,or-which,perhaps,isthe betterword-Spiritism,wehavealready expressedourconvictionthatthereis muchinsconnectionwithitwhichis quiteinexplicableonthehypothesisof imposture,muchwhichnobranchof physicalsciencecanoreverwillaccount for.Wethinkthatsomeofthese manifestationsareofapreternatural characterinssu',stance,howeverlargely theymaybeaccompaniedbyfraud.

Wearequiteprepared,therefore,to findourselvesreceivedinsomequarters withincredulity,orindeedwithdisdain, whenweavowourconvictionthatthere areintheworld,atthepresenttime, occultphenomenainexplicableby, physicalcausesofanykind.Thephenomenawemeanarepopularlyreferred toanimalmagnetismormesmerism, bothwhichwords,however,aremerely examplesofnamesused,nottoexpress knowledge,buttoveilignorance.The semiresofthespiritualists,theirintercoursewithunseenpowers,themanifestationsamongthemofimpalpable presence,themindreading,psychomoney,andsoulcharmingofthe clairvoyants,andtheabominableimpuritywhichinmanycasesisassociated withthesethings,arefactstowhichwe mayshutoureyesifweplease.But theyarefactswithintheknowledgeof millions,andpowerfullyaffectingthe thoughtsandactionsofmillions.The practicalquestionsis,whatareweto makeofthenr?Whatshouldbeour attitudeinrespecttothem? NowheretheCatholicisinavery differentpositionfromtheProtestant. TheCatholicChurchaloneofthemany varietiesofChristianityreallypreaches thesupernatural.Shealonehasaclear anddefiniteteachingabouttheinvisible world.Onthefaithofherteachingwe believeandaresurethatweliveinthe

TheCatholicChurchtellsusplainly enoughthatthesethingsarefromthe devil,aidthereforesetsherbanupon them.Ofcourse,tothevastmajority ofProtestants,who,bythehelpof Rationalism,Naturalism,Materialism, Agnosticism,erivateJudgment,the PrivyCouncil,andthelikeemancipatoryagencies,havegutridofbeliefin thedevil,thismeanslittleornothing.
