DepartureofMissionersforIndia.

OnWednesdaylasttwomissionary prieststooktheirdeparturefromSt. Joseph'sCollege,MillHill,forthepurposeofcarryingthegladtidingsofthe gospeltothosewhostilllingerinthe valleyoftheshadowofdeath.Thetwo recruitstothezealousbodyofmissionerswhohavealreadytakentheir departurefromthisfamousestablishment areFathersKlienschneiderandMaxima. ThegoodshipAlanorawillfirstconvey themtoMadras,afterwhichtheywill proceedtotheTeleguAlission.The beautifulceremonybywhichsuchdeparturesarepreceded,lostnoneof'its impressivenessthroughitsbeingso frequentlywitnessedoflate.Thegood priestswereaccompaniedtothestation bythestudents,whowalkedinprocessionalorderprecededbyacross-bearer. Itisscarcelynecessarytodwellupon thegreatthingswhichSt.Joseph's MissionaryCollegehasdoneforthe evangelizationofIndia.TheTelegu Missionhadalreadyreceivednolessthan twelvemissionersfromthisinstitution. Oftheseonehasfallenavictimtothe terrorsoftheclimate,whilstanotherhas returnedinimpairedhealthtothecollege. InAprillast,asourreaderswillremember,fourwissionerstooktheirdeparturefromthecollegeforAfghanistan. BythespecialrequestoftheHoly Father,thesemissionersattendedtothe wantsoftheCatholicsoldiersinthe war,ofwhichthatcountryhasbeen latelythetheatre.Oftheseonediedat LundiKhotalonthe18thofJulywhile attendingtothespiritualwantsofthe soldiersprostratedbycholera.The placehehasvacatedwillbeworthily filledbytheRev.RichardBurke-a nephewofthegreatDominican-who hasbeensummonedfromCandaharfor thatpurpose.

havedevoted£5000tonald.,improving St.Paul'sChurchyardandopeningit upasapleasantgarden.Thisgarden isnowfreetothepublic,buteverything seemstohavebeenstudiouslyavoided thatwouldmakeitofanyusetothe people.Oneofthemostrequisitefeaturesofapublicgarden-aseat-isnot tobeseen,andtheregulationsareso strictastodetermanyofthepoorer classesfromgoingneartheplace. Indeed,thenewopenspaceseemsto havebeendoneupmoreforthebenefit andpleasureofthecathedralfolkand theoccupantsofthesurroundinghouses thanforthegeneralrunofthepublic. Thisis,unfortunately,thecasewith regardtomostofouropenspaces.

IRELAND.

AgriculturalDistressinIreland.

Verygreatalarmprevailsinconsequenceoftheuniversalfailureofall agriculturalprobctsinIreland.To ascertaintheexactstateofafIliirsthe DublinFreiman'sJournalsentoutreporterswiththeratherpretentioustitle ofLandConnnissinners.FromNorth, South,EastandWest,theyhaveforwardedtothatjournaldismaltalesof thewretchedconditionoftheIrish tenantry.Thefollowingisoneofthe Freeman'sleadersonthesubject "Withthecorningofeachdaythe prospectbeginstodarken.Thecountry issunkindespairandtheseeming apathy,bornofhopelessness,which marksthebeginningofagreatcrisis, mayto-morrowbefollowedbyrecklessnessanddefiance.Whereitwillend, nowthatthepeopleareabletorealise whatisbeforethem,nomancansay. Themoreourlandsystemisinvestigated,themoreapparentitbecomesthat foralongtimethefarmerhasstoodon thebrinkofruinthathisvaunted prosperityisahollowsham;andthat thecrashwhichisnowabouttobefall hasbeenmerelystavedoff.Thecollapse whichhastensmighthavecomebeflire, wereitnotforthetremendousefforts madetowithstanditandnowwitha badharvest,allproduceandallstock withoutamarket,evenatlowestprices, theinevitabledoomseemsnear.These areseriouswords,buttheymustbe takenintheirfulln.eaningifwhatnow impendsistobeprovidedagainst.Our columnsnowcontaincosimunieations similarincharacterandpurporttothe publishedfactswhichforeshadowedthe coalingofthedreadfulfamineyears.

Timewas-inthegoodoldCatholic days,longbeforesuchathingas"the Reformation"washeardof-when CanterburyCathedralwaslookedupon withveneration,andwhenthepious peopleofEnglandvisitedinthousands theshrineofthatsacrededifice.How isitnow? Astoryrelatedinacountry paperaffordsaverytruthfulillustration ofthelamentedchangewhichhasbeen effectedinthepublicmindthroughthe manyludicroussectswhichhavesprung intoexistenceduringthepastthree centuries,andallinthemimeotChristianity.ThestoryisthattwoCockneys,meetingatMargate,questioned eachotherastowhattheyhadgoneto see.Onewasgreatlysurprisedou hearingthattheotherhadbeento Canterbury,wherehewastold"There's nothingtoseebutanoldcathedraland someoldhouses,"whichhedidnotcure about."Oh,"saidtheother,"Idid notgotoseetheoldcathedral;Iwent toseethe'ousewhereMiss'Arker lived!"Itis,perhaps,necessaryto explaintoourreaders,whodonot,as arule,keepthemselveswellpostedup inliteratureofthemurderoustype,that HackeristhenameoftheoldladysupposedtohavebeenmurderedatEuston Square,andrespectingwhichtherehas beenalongtrial.

WealthyChurchmen.

Pitytheindigentcircumstancesof theBishopofLondonandhisfellow ecclesiasticaltenantsofSt.Paul'sCathedral! HislegalRightReverencegets £10,000ayear-£200aweek-for allowinghimselftobecalledtheBishop ofLondonandforhisattendanceinthe HouseofLordsasapeeroftherealmwhatelsehehastodoisapuzzle-and hisdeanandtwocanonshavebetween them£4000ayear;yettheycanspare nothingforthekeepinginorderofeven thegroundattachedtotheirchurchediflee! The'surroundingsofSt.Paul's havebeenalong-standingdisgraceto thosewhoareinpossessionofthecathedral,andwouldprobablyrennin'suever-

mostinconsideratelandlordsandthe mostdeterminedrentraisersarealso absentees.Thefearfulstorywhichour Commissionertellsneedsnomoldsof ourstoStrengthenit;itsverytelling carriesconviction;andwecommendit totheseriousconsideiationofallwho canfeelforaharassedandinjured people.Wealsopublishaveryremarkableseriesofresolutionspassedat ameetingheldonSundaylastina parishiutheWestofIreland,which, wefear,representastateofthingsexistingineverycorneroftheislandsuccessivebadharvests,greatdepreciationinthevalueofallagricultural produce,thesuddenfallinthepriceof cattleandlivestock,andalongwith theseisthedemandfortherentsimposed inmoreprosperoustimes.Itiswellit shouldbeborneinmindthattheconditionofthingswhichtheseresolutions representmaintainsallthroughthe country,andthesamesinistercausefor allthismiseryistobefoundinexcessiverents.Thetenantsonotherestatessetforth,withsimpleandtouching eloquence,theterriblewoeswhichthey havetobear,intheaddressestotheir landlordswhichwereproduce.They appealinlanguagewhichoughtto toucheveryheartforsomerelief.The untowardpasswhichmattershave reached,astoldbyourLaudCommissioners,findconfirmationintheseresolutionsandtheseaddresses,anditis wellthatallshouldrealisethetruestate ofthecase.Forewarnedisforearmed andifthecalamitywhichthrowsits darkeningshadowoverthelandistobe inverted,itisonlybyhearkeningtothe warningvoice.Feelingittobeour dutytodoso,wehavealreadywarned theGovernmentofwhatistakingplace iuourmidst,aridwehavepointedout tothemthatitistheirmostimportant andurgentdutytobepreparedforthe worst.Withthewinterwillcomethe mostutterwant;thepeoplewillbe helplessunlessemploymentbeprovided. Thisemploymentcanonlybeprovided bythepromotionofextensiveandreproductivepublic Wehave indicatedwhatthesepublicworksmight be-thereclamationofwasteandflooded lands,andtheexpansionofthearterial drainagesystem.Ifthereateriot powersatpresentiuexistenceforthese purposes,theGovernmentareboundto obtainthem,ortostraintheirpowers, soastomeetthecrisis.Ifintelligent preparationsbenowmade,wehave yetsomehopethattheforceoftheblow ninnybeweakenedandtheeviltime tidedover.Butinsayingthisweare nottobeunderstoodthatthisisallthat isrequired.Agreatandfar-reaching 'evolutioninthetermsandconditions uponwhichlandisheldinIrelandis imminentandunavoidable.Wehave saidthatitisthedutyofGovernment toobtainpower,ifithaveitnot,todeal withtheimmediatenecessitiesofthe times.Iftheywaituntilstarvation overtakethepeople,deepwillbetheir responsibility.Itmaybethatitwillbe necessarytohaverecoursetoParliament.Ifso,wewarnthemthatnext Februarywillbetoolate.Aspeaker atthemeetingatMallowonSunday, Mr.MulhallenMarum,madeasuggestionwhichis,therefore,worthserious consideration.Whynothavean autumnSession?Arethelivesofthe Irishpeoplenotofasmuchimportance astheorganisationoftheAfghanWar?

Inthoseyearsthepeoplesawthestorm asitcame,butthosetowhomtheyhad tolookforaidrefusedtoseeit.Itcame withdeadlycertainty-faninedecimated thepoor,andruinfollowedtheskin.A scourgefellontheland.Theagrarian revolutionwhichfollowedthoseevents, theannihilationofapeople,andthe transferofproperties,throughtheoperationoftheEncumberedEstatesAct,to anewanddifferentclass,wenowlearn didverylittletowardsasettlementof thequestion.Afterthelapseofonlya quarterofacenturywefindthesame disasteragainimpending,andwealso findthesamescandalousrelationssubsistingbetweenthetillersofthesoiland thereceiversoftherents.Ontheone sidewefindthetoilerworkingtomeet theimpostwhichweighsuponhim.On theotherwefindthemanwhomakes thatimpostperformingnodutyinreturn.InthecountyofDonegalwe learnfrom"OurLandCommissioner," thatmattersareatadeplorablepass. Thepotatoesarerotten,thehayis simplymanure,theturnipsdidnotgrow, andtheoatsarethresheduponthefields. Wealsolearnthattherentshavebeen raisedtoapointonsomeestateswhich makesitutterlyhopelesstomeetthem. Hequotesoneastoundinginstancewhere arentwhichstoodoriginallyat£7a yearhasbeengraduallyraised,yearby year,tothatatwhichitnowstands, namely£42ayearThepropertyin thisholdingappealstohavebeenreclaimedfromhalfbogandhalfarable landbytheverypeoplewhohavepaid theirpresentrouttosomepersonswho possiblyhasneverseentheplace.Nor doesitseemstrangethatmuDonegalthe

Evenifnothinghadcomeofit,Irishmenwouldatanyratehavehadtheinspiritingfeeling,towhichtheyhadfits solongbeenstrangers,thatsomereal fightingwasgoingon,inwhichtheir representativeswerecontendingcourageouslyagainstoverwhelmingodds. Buttheresultshavebeensubstantial enough,orhaveappearedsubstantial enough,tojustifyafarmoredesperate enterprise,TheIntermediateEducationAct,therepealoftineConventiou Act,andthelinivtrsityActbearwitnesstothevigouroftireonsetandthe collapseoftiredefence.Mr.Parnell maywellcontrastthefruitsoftwo sessionsofthe"activepolicy"withthe barrennessofthefour preceded tem.Norcanwebeswirliscdthat, underthecircumstances,Ireisatpresentthemostpopular'eauinIreland. InntheeyesoftheIrish,themeans whichhehasemployedaredignifiedtry theendswhichtheyhaveachieved. Indeed,thestateofsemi-paralysisto whichhehasreducedtheParliamentary machineisdoubtlessregardedusamore sflisctiveargumentforHomeRulethan anynumberofMr.Butt'swelt-turned periods.

Ireland.

WhyMr.ParnellisPopularin Ireland.

TheSpectatorisnotsoblindassome ofitsLondoncontemporariespretendto beonthesubjectofMr..Parnell'spopularityinIreland.Thatjournalsaysin itsissueofOctober11th:TotheEnglish,whoknowMr.Parnellbestasakindofpoliticalsapper,to whomnothingissacred,itseemsat firstsighthardtounderstandhowsuch amanshouldsucceedinsupplantinga politicalleaderoftheapprovedtype likeMr.Butt.Butthematteriseasy enoughofexplanation.TheHome Rulepartywhenitbeganitscareerin theHouseofCommons,wellorganized andadmirablyledasitappearedtobe, wasinrealitycomposedofthemostincongruouselements.Themajorityof itsmemberswereordinaryIrish LiberalswhoLad"acceptedHome

IuthetelegraphicnewsbytheCaliflirtrianmail,forwardedfromAuckland, thereriteafewitemswhichpresent Irishatlirirsinratheranalarmingaspect.Wehadpreviouslygotinformationwhich,asourreadershaveseen, ledustoregardthecountryasbeenin asomewhatdisturbedstate,anditseems thattineexcitementwasratherhairCIL,iugthanabatiug.Evidently.nr.Pannellhasbeenthroughoutthecountry acceptedustheleadersuitableforthe tunesandtheoccasion,andIreappears, tohavethrownhimselfiututhenational causewithavigournearlyapproaching aspiritofdesperation.Whereverlie goes,immensecrowdsofpeopleflock aroundhim,andthemeetings,atwhich heisthecentralfigure,areattendedby manythousands.ThesamethingoccurredinO'Connell'stime,butthe peacefulprinciplesofhisagitationwere unalterablyfixedinhisownmind,and thepeopleofIrelandhadgivenintheir adhesiontothermThatpowerofcommandtheLiberaturexercisedoverthe -peoplewasanadditionalguaranteethat theycouldueitherbepruvokednorensnaredintoviolatingthemoralforce policyonwhichthemovementwas organised.Mattersmaybedifferent now.Asafacttheyaredifferent. ItisunquestionablethatMr.Parnell exercisesanextraordinaryfascination overthepeople.Hemusthavemany ofthequalitiesthatqualifymentolead others,buthasheallwhichasateguide shouldpossess?Canherulehimself intimesofexcitementandrestrain others?Itmustberememberedthat, asaleader,heisinameasureuntried. Somemaythinkthathisboldpolicyin Parliamentmarkshimasthemanfor thesituation,butthereareotherswho believethatthequalitieswhich signalisedhimthere,thoughaffordingproofofhiscourageandsincerity, disqualifyhimforthepositionofleader inperiloustimesofexcitement,when discontentprevailsthroughoutthe country,andtirepeopleareiuthat temperwhichmightbeeasily,andat anymoment,workedupintothecommissionofsomeovertactwhichwould

furnishanexcuseforemployingthose repressivemeasurestowhichtheEnglish Government,ononepretextoranother, almostinvariablyresortintimesof distress.Thesearealsothetimesin whichthenationalspiritisapttoassert itselfwildlyandrecklessly.Itseems tous,fromtheadditionalintelligence receivedbythemail,thatifMr.Parnell possessnottheveryhighestqualitiesof aleader,theresultofthepresentstateof thingsmaybemostdisastrous.Itis nodifficultthinginatimeofscarcity, whenthepeopleofanoppressed nationalityarenaturallydisposedtobrood overtheirgrievances,foranymanas eloquentandasmuchrespectedasMr. Parnellistoraiseawide-spreadand angryagitationforaredressofwrongs; butifthemanwhocandothatcannot alsorestrainthepeoplefromgoingbeyondafixedandsafepoint,hisinfluence cannotbutbeproductiveofevil.Itre. mainstobeseenwhetherMr.Parnellis leadingonthepeopleofIrelandbeyond thepointatwhichhecanexercisea restrainingpower.Othersgiftedashe ismadethatmistake,andtheirdeficiency inoneofthefirstrequisitesofleadershipwasnotdiscoveredtillitwastoo latetoavertthemisfortunesintowhich theirunfortunatefollowerswereledby theirimpetuosityandimprudence.We donotsaythatMr.Parnellisdeficient inthequalitieswehaveindicated,but asheisuntriedinthatrespect,andis playingadangerousgameatacritical time,thereissomereasonforuneasiness onthesubject.-Advocate.

JacobiuiwasaCanonofSt.John Lateran,ProtonotaryApostolicPartecipante,andConsultorofthePropaganda andofthespecialCongregationfor ProvincialCouncils.Onthe21stof March,1874,hewasconsecratedArchbishopofThessalonica, andsent asnunciotoVienna.Mgr.Jacobini exertedhimselfwithmuchabilityto amelioratetheunhappyconditionofthe CatholicsinRussianPoland,wherethe faithfulwereharassedbyviolenceand schism.HisconductwashighlyappreciatedinRome,Austria,andPoland, andsuchwastheesteemfeltforhim bytheEmperorofAustriathatby specialarrangementhewill,afterhis creationascardinal,continuehisdiplomaticfunctionsatViennawiththetitle ofpro-nuncio.

Mgr.DomenicoSanguigni,bornat Terrucina,June20,1809,was ofthenuuciaturaatNaples.andsubsequentlyatLisbon,underMgr.(now Cardinal)Ferrieri.FromLisbonhe wentasinter-nunciot)RioJaneiro, wherelieremaineduntil1874,conductingthenegotiationsbetweentheholy SeeandtheBrazilianEmpire,andat thesametimeoccupyinghimselfwith ecclesiasticalaffairsinthevariousrepublicsofSouthAmerica,beforethe institutionoftheApostolicDelegations inCostaRica,Ecuador,Bolivia,Peru, andChili,theArgentineRepublic, Uraguay,andParaguay.Theposition oftherepresentativesoftheHolySeein thosecountrieswasrenderedextremely difficultbythecontinuouscivilwars, theconstantchangesofthecivilgovernments,thefrequentrevolutions,and aboveallbythepreponderanceof Masonicandothersecretsocieties.Mgr. Sanguigni,however,showedremarkable sagacityandtalent.Hewaspromoted tobenuncioatLisbonin1874,andwas consecratedArchbishopofTarsus,i.p.i., onthe12thofJuneinthatyear.

Russiaistryingtomakethingsup withtheCatholicChurch,andwellshe may,forsincethedaysofDeciusand DiocletiannosuchdastardlypersecutionhadbeenwitnessedastheCzar's myrmidonshaveinflicteduponthe Churchanditsministersoflateyears.

"ItwasaboutthistimethatMadame deKrudeneracquiredadecidedinfluenceoverhim.UnderherinspirationwasformedtheHolyAlliance, concludedwiththeideaofleadingthe worldintoaneraoflastingpeaceand ofovercoming,underallcircumstances, thegeniusofevilbythegeniusofgood. AGITATIONINIRELAND.

THEoneall-engrossingtopicwhichfills theIrishpaperstobendisthemovementnowinactiveprogressrespecting thetenureoflandathome.Underthe guidanceofMr.I'ARNELLandkindred spiritsanagitationissustainedwhich isundoubtedlyofadangerouscharacter andhickmayeasilyleadtodisastrous consequences.Thecauseortheoccasionofthemanydiscussionswhichare everywherebeingheldisthedistress whichhasfallenonIrishtenantfarmers inconsequenceoflowpricesand wretchedcrops.

Theyarenot,however,singularin theirsadplight.InEnglandalsotimes areverybadforthefarmer.Sohard indeedishispresentlot,sogloomyhis futureprospectthatalreadysomeofthe greateststatesmenhavedeclaredthat sweepingchangesintherelationsbetweenlandlordandtenant-startling reductionsintherentoflandmustsoon bedeterminedupontoaidtheBritish farmerinthestrugglefordearlife.

ThefactisEnglishandIrishagriculturalistscannotviewiththeir Americancompetitors.Heavyrents andsmallholdingsaregivingwaybeforelandalmostfreefromtaxand almostlimitlessinextent.Thecompetitionisarecentgrowth.Amerida hasbeenlongdiscovered,butonlynow areitsimmenseresourcesbeingopened upinsuchwiseastomakeimpression onthemarketsoftheworld.The boundlessplainsofherCentralStates andthelongslopeofherWestern Coastyieldvastsuppliesofcornand meatwhichbytheaidofscienceare swiftlyandcheaplyconveyedtowhatevermarketinalltheworldoffersmost advantagesofreadyandprofitabledisposal.Americandealerstakebreadstuffs, beef,pork,butterandbaconto EnglishPortsandthereundersellthe homeproducers,crippledastheyarein manyways,butespeciallybythehigh rentchargesleviedonthelandthey cultivate.

ToreturntothenewphaseoftheLand questioninIreland.Mr.PARNELLhas madespeechestomanythousandtillers ofthesoil.HisadvicetoIrishfarmers isthattheyshouldofferagreatlyreduced rentaltotheirlandlordsandinthe eventofthisbeingrefused,putthe moneyiutheirpocketsandpaynorent atall.Suchspeechesareremarkable enough,butstillmoresignificantisthe mannerinwhichtheyarereceived. Everyoratoricalturnthatcanbearthe interpretation-"paynorent"-is cheeredtotheecho.Everyvoiceinterjectedfromthecrowdisforthrowing overthelandlordsaltogether.

Someallowancemustbemadeforthe perfervidumScoter=ingenium,forthe enthusiasmofapeoplespeciallysusceptibletotheimpressionsofarabidand heedlessstyleoforatory.Yetstill thereareindicationsofaleaveninthe massthatmayworkmischief.There yetremainthesadsignsofcommunistic

andrevolutionaryprinciplesworkingon theIrishpeople.

SpeakerslikeMr.PARNELLexcite feelingstheyareafterwardsunableto control.WriterslikethosewhocontributetowhatiscalledtheNationalPress insinuatedoctrinestheywouldpossibly shrinkfromseeingpushed.home.The speecheshoweverandthewritingstell atlengthonthemisguidedpeople.A greatHiberno-Americanpaperhasbeen foryearspreachingupacrusadeof communism.TheworsttenetsofRousseau,FourrierandProudhonareits textsinteachingtheIrishworldlessons ofanarchy,socialismandrebellion.That theteachingshavenotbeenaltogether fruitless,isthethoughtwhichcomesto mindonacalmconsiderationofallthat takesplaceatthefrequentandvast meetingsheldinconnectionwiththe presentLandagitationinIreland.

Inpunishmentforitssinstheworld mayhaveitsway.Nayitalmostalreadyseemsasifitwerewithinthe planofDivineJusticesoontopermitthe temporarytriumpheverywhereofevil principles.Maywenotseethatday.For thenshallbeagreatfightandhideous sheddingofblood.Portentsofthe comingfrayappeartolowerinvarious quarters.MaynospotinFaithful Irelandbeallottedtoformthebattle groundofanysectionofthedreadful stiuggle.

MUSICALENTERTAINMENTS FORCHARITABLEOBJECTS.

THEREbeingsomewhatofalullnowin theroundofamusementsgotupfor benevolentpurposes,itwouldseema favorabletimetodeliverourselvesofa fewremarkswehavelongwishedto make.

Perhapsitcanneverbeexplained whycharitablepeopleprefersomuchto helpagoodcauseinaroundaboutway ratherthandirectly.Notthatthe pointblankappealwillgounanswered no,butacrowningresponsewillhegrantedifonlyalittlefunmaybehad,oralittle valuereceivedforthemoneycheerfully andfreelygivenforcharitablepurposes.Humoringthisinexplicable whim,concertsareafavoredmodeof raisingfunds,orifnotconcerts,atleast somekindofre-unionsadmittingofbeing madeattractivebytheintroductionofa littlemusictogracetheoccasion.And anentthemusicistheexactthemeto whichoursaywillpoint. Anoldsawrecommendsusnotto lookagifthorseinthemouth.The lessonisprettywellobservedinthe caseofthosewhogotolistentoamateur andunsalariedvocalists.Thegoodwill ratherthanthesuccessofthesingeris regarded.Insuchcircumstancessharp criticismisgenerallyesteemedoutof place.Thepoorestsinger-itiswellknown-undergoesgratuitouslyan ordealofeffortandnervousness,greater, perhaps,thanthestrainonaPattiora Nillsonpaidforbyanenormousfee. Butthereissomethingworsethanwant ofskill.Allowancewillbemadefor that.Wantoftastehowever,andwant ofasenseoffitnessinthevocalselectionsmade,arequiteinexcusable.Judgingfromthemanytimesourfeelingsof proprietyhavebeenwoundedonsuch occasions,wewouldalmostventureto saythatacertainfatalityhangsover musicalamateursofbenevolentdispositions,eggingthemontomakethemost misplacedselectionsofnaughtyorrowdy songs.Consideringthattheseprecious piecesarealwaystobesungtoamost respectableaudience-ofteninthepresenceofclergymen-sometimesbefore theBishophimself-itseemsincredible thatanyoneshouldbesodeficientin tasteastoselectalow,vulgar,orotherwiseimpropersongforsuchtimeand place. Heavenknowstherangeofchoiceis wideenough.Thenumberofgoodsongs isalmostinfinite.Andtothelongcatalogueofexcellentsongsmaybeadded theyetgreatermultitudeofsilly,stupid andmeaninglesseffusions.Allare welcome;nothingfurtherisaskedfor thantherejectionofthepositivelydisgusting.Letushavethe"Battleorthe Breeze."Nothingwillgiveusgreater pleasurethantonodacheerfulassentto somelustytenor-theverypictureof

Theelectionhascommencedtooccupypub- licattention.Requisitionsinvitingcandi datestocomeforwardfornomination,are alreadygoingroundforsignatures.Two candidatesarealreadyinthefield,Messrs.S. F.HamersleyandR.Hardey.Asyet theirpoliticalviewshavenotbeenpublished, butitiswhisperedthattheformergentlemanisopposedto,andthelatterinfavorof ResponsibleGovernment.Catholicelectors beforerecordingtheirvoteshavearightto knowsomethingmoreofacandidatesviews thanhispoliticalplatform,viz.,hisviewsin referencetoEducation;Educationshould betheirwatchwordneithershouldtheyallowanypoliticalhobbytoinfluencethemto splittheirvotesinsupportofacandidate indifferentorentirelyopposedtotheirclaim. Thefollowingluminousandcleverresume ofcertaindecisionsofthelateChiefJustice ofWesternAustraliaappearedintheFremantleHeraldofDec.6th:SirArchibaldPaullBurt,duringtheeighteenyearshewasChiefJusticeandsole JudgeofWesternAustralia,morethanonce foundhimselfcalledupontoruleincases presentingconsiderabledifficultyandenabling himtoshowhisgreatknowledgeoflaw, andhispowerofdiscriminationaswellas thoroughimpartialityandindependence. Onememorablecasewas;hatofYoung,a ticket-of-leaveholder,wheretheCrown.excitedveryjustindignationbythearbitrary ,inductofComptrollerGeneralWakeford, whoissuedawarrantfortheapprehension

endcommittaltotheconvictprison,Fremantle,ofYoung,withouttheusualmagisterialinvestigationintothenatureandtruth ofthechargepreferred.Publicfeelingwas stronglyopposedtotheproceedingofthe ComptrollerGeneral,and.Mr.S.H.Parker, whobehavedwithnotalittlegallantryon theoccasion,incomingforwardtodefend Youngwiththecertaintyofprovokingthe hostilityoftheGovernment,madehisfirst steptowardspopularity.Thefeelingsofthe ChiefJustice,whoshowedthroughouthis judicialcareerthatheregardedallmenwho camebeforehimasequalandentitledtothe samefairconsiderationwereprobablyinthe samedirection.ButYoungwasatthetime aprisoneroftheCrown,althoughallowedto beatlarge,andSirArchibaldruledthatthe court.hadnopowertointerferewiththe actionoftheauthoritiesinwhoiecustody Youngwas.Thecorrectnessofhisdecision wasquestionedatthetime,butithassince beenadmittedonallhandsthathewasright. Anotherremarkablecasewithwhichhehad todealwasthatknownasthe"rice"case. Inthisinstancethecaptainofashippartly ladenwithricepurchasedbyandshippedto theorderoftheownersofthevessel,Messrs. J.&W.BatemanofFremantle,mortgaged thiscargofornecessariesrequiredbythe shipandendorcedthebillsofladentoa Batavianfirm,whoforwardedthemtothe W.A.Bank,toholdassecurityfortheir claimagainsttheship.TheBankclaimed toclearthegoodsattheCustomHouseas holdersofthebillsoflading,ontheship's arrivalinthecolony.Messrs.Bateman,on theotherhandclaimedthecargoasowners, whohadneverpartedwiththeirrighttoit, amidundertheadviceoftheirattorniessued theW.A.Banktorecovertheirproperty freeoftheIiin,thecontentionbeingthat themasterhadnopowertoendorseawaythe hillsofladingforordinaryship'sdisbursements.TheChiefJusticedecidedthatthe Captainwasnotthemereservantofthe ownersoftheship,buttheiragentandfactor, andhisendorsementoftheBillsoflading wasalegaltransferofthepropertyrepresentedbytheBillsoflading,andthattheholder ofsuchbillsoflading-unlessfraudcould heshown-wasentitledtorecoverthemoney advanceduponthesecurityoftheendorsement.Thecasemadeagreatstiratthe time,buttherulingoftheChiefJusticewas soclearandhesofullysubstantiatedits correctnessbythecaseshequotedthat everyone,notactuallyinterestedinthecase, wassatisfiedwithitAfterthis,therecame, asmayberemembered,somenotablecriminalcasesthechargesinwhichwereexceedinglygraveandtheoffenderspersonswho movedinthehighestgradesofColonial society,andwerepersonallyknowntothe ChiefJustice.Ofhis"rulings"inthesecases allthatneedbesaidisthattheywerean instanceofSirArchibald'spowertoentirely setasidehisownpersonalfeelingsandtodo hisdutyunflinchinglyunderthemostpainfulcircumstances.Inanothercase,where thecaptainofashipbroughtanaction againstawell-knownmerchant,fordemurrage,SirArchibaldwasgenerallythoughtto havetakenasingularlymistakenviewofthe evidenceandtoayelaidthecasebeforethe juryinawaycalculatedtomisleadthem. Buttheviewhegavethemwashisown,and, sofarashislawwasconcerned,noone questionedit.Thelastgreatcaseinwhich hepresidedthatpresentedanydifficultyw, thatofMilesagainsttheCrown,whenSir Archibaldgaveperhapsoneoftheablest decisionsevergivenbytheWestAustralian Bench.Goingengeneralprinciplesand takingoneofthosebroadviewsofthelaw whichdistinguishgreatlawyersfromlittle ones,andover-rulingthetechnicalandinequitableobjectionsraisedforthedefence, SirArchibaldpronouncedajudgmentwhich, likeallgreatjudgments,spoketothecommon senseofmankind.TheCrown,thoughit admittedthatithadmadeamistakeofthe verygrossestcharacter,andsuchasshowed anignoranceoflawwhichwashardly credible,andthatithadnomoreworthy objectinviewthantomakemightsucceed againstrightbyamiserabletechnicality,not contentwithhavingthecasedecidedbya legitimatetribunal,nextproceeded,withan utterdisregardofitsowndignity,togetan opinionfavourabletoitfromoneofthe CounselsattachedtotheEnglishColonial Office.Astatementofthecase-wassent home,andanopinionobtained,andreports gotabroadtotheeffectthatthisopinionwas unfavourabletotherulingoftheChief Justice.ButitisnowknownthatSirArchibald'srulingwassubstantiallyaffirmed,and thattheonlypointonwhichtimeEnglish counselthoughttheremightbeaquestion wasoneofpracticeinwhichlocalcircumstanceshadtobetakenintoaccount-circumstancesbeyondtheknowledgeofthe Counselconsulted.Thismeaninglessattempt togetsomeonetosaysomethingwhich wouldinsomewayreflectonSirArchibald's lawwasnaturallyasourceofmuchannoyancetoonefaradvancedinyears,andprobablyservedtoshortenavaluablelife. Thisistoberegretted.Buttheexcellent useSirArchibaldmadeofhisgreatlegal knowledgeandacumen,hispreservationof hisindependenceunderlocalandpersonal influence,andthefirmnessdisplayedbyhim alikeinthepunishmentofwrongandthe maintenanceofrightuptotheverylast, willcausehismemorytoberespectedbythe peopleofWesternAustraliaaslongasit hasahistory.

DesperateEncounterwithBush_ rangersinNewSouthWales.

FromW..ggaWagganewscameonMondayafternoonthatthattownshiphadbeen thrownintoastateofexcitementbyareport

thatearlythatmorningtheWantabadgery stationhadbeenstuckupbysixarmedmen. Thefirstintelligenceoftheraidwasgivenin theHerald,andthedailypapersofTuesday morningcontainedsomeadditionaltelegraphicparticulars.From-theseaccountswe learnthattheWantabadgerystationisnear asmallbushtownship'ofthatname,situated abouttwenty-fivemilesfromGundagai,and thesamedistancefromWaggaWagga.Six men,allwellarmed,threeof;whomwere quiteyouthful-lookinginappearance,came intoWantabadgeryonSaturday,andafter loiteringaboutthetownshipforashorttime, theyenteredthepublic-house,andbailedup thelandlady,takingallthemoneyshehad, anddemandingsomethingtoeatanddrink. Theterrifiedwomanhandedoverallher readycash,andsuppliedtheruffianswith refreshment.Aftermakingherpromise thatshewouldnotspreadanalarmfor twelvehoursaftertheyhadleft,therobbers startedfortheWantabadgerystation.They arrivedatthehomesteadintheevening,and immediatelybailedupallhands,numbering nineteenpersons,lockingthemupinalarge bedroomfortenhours.Onthefollowing morning,athalf-pastteno'clock,theClarendonmail-boywasstopped,aboutfourmiles fromtheheadstation,andthebagstaken fromhim.Therobbersclearedoutwiththe bags,butdidnotextractanylettersfrom them,atleast,sofarasthemail-boyis aware.Alexander"McDonald,thesonofa publican,gallopedintoWagga,andreached thepolicestationonSundaynight.Atfirst itwasthoughttheboyhadconcoctedsome cock-and-bullstory,andhadbeenscaredunnecessarily,butherelatedtheparticularsof whathadoccurredsocircumstantiallythat theofficerinchargeofthepolicestationed theresenoutfourmountedconstablesatdaybreaktothesceneoftheoutrage.Thebushringersleftthestationat9o'clockonMondaymorning,andhadnot!proceededfar whentheywereencounteredbythefour trooperssentoutfromWages,.Theconstables calledupontherobberstosurrender,and thiswasansweredbyavolleyfromsixrevolvers.Tiiepolicedismountedandreturnedthetire,butwithouteffect.The shootingthenbecamesohotforthetroopers thattheyhadtoretreat.Thebushrangers hadbeforethissneakedroundintherearof the'constables,andmadeoffwiththeir horses,whichhadbeentiedupduringthe skirmishtoaffence.Thepolicethenretired, havingdecidedtomakeforWantabadgery stationtoobtainfreshhorses.Abouttwo hoursafterthis,amessengerarrivedin Wagga,andstatedthathehadseenthegang (whichconsistedofsixmen)ridingfour policehorsesandtwostationhorses,and anotherhorsebelongingtothestation wasbeingled.Whiletheconstableswere atthestationobtainingfreshhorsesthe bushrangerspushedalongtowardsGundagai. Somethreehourselapsedbeforethetroopers wereagaininthesaddleinpursuit,andin themeantimeMr.Fosberry,theInspectorGeneralofPoliceinSydney,hadsenttelegramstotheofficersstationedatAlbury, Wagga,andGundagaitomakeeveryeffort tocapturetherobbers.Abodyofmenwere sentoutfromGundagaiwithinstructionsto co-operatewiththeWaggamenwhoafter theyobtainedfreshhorsesattheWantabielgerystation,startedinpursuit. TheymettheGundagaipolice,underthe commandofSenior-sergeantCarroll,and simultaneouslycameuponthebushrangers, whowerecampedabouttwomilesfromthe station.Adesperateencounterthentook place.Thepolicecalledout,"Inthename oftheQueen,surrenderI"when,forreply, theyreceivedadischargeofbullets,noneof which,however,tookeffect.Thebushrangersthenpreparedtoresisttothelast, andoneoftheirnumberdeclaredthatthey wouldneverbetakenalive.Thetroopers behavedverycoolly,andneverwasteda shot,buttherobbershadanadvantage,being undercoverofahut,whilethepolicewere exposedintheopenair.ConstableBowen, ofGundagai,foughtlikeatiger,andclosing inwiththevillains,shottwodead.Athird waswoundedinthearm.Itwaswhilelookingafteroneofthebushrangers,whohad madegoodhisescape,thatConstableBowen washitbyaballintheneckanddangerously wounded.Twomenhavingbeenshotdead, onewounded,andoneescaped,theremainingtwosurrendered.Andoneofthesetwo wasnootherthanCaptainMoonlitealias Scott,whowasrecentlyreleasedfromPentridge.ItisstatedthatanescapedVictorian prisoner,namedNesbitt,wasalsooneofthe gang.BesidestheseriouswoundConstable Bowenreceived,twootherconstableshad theirhorsesshotunderthem.Acivilian, namedBeveridge,withtwoassistants,intendingtojointhepolicewerestoppedby thebushrangers.Beveridgewascompelled toshoothisownhorse.Theganghelda court-martial,andgaveBeveridgeandhis assistantsfiveminutestopreparefordeath, whenthepolicearrived,andsosavedtheir lives.Beveridgedistinguishedhimselfsome yearssincebycapturinganotedbushranger, single-handed,andwithoutarms.Itwasin esamelocality,anditwastheknowledge ofthisfactthatmadethegangdecideto shoothim.Thesecondencounterwiththe bushrangerswaswitnessedbyanumberof peoplefromtheneighbouringhills.

addressuponthesubjectofreligious education.Hesaid-Ladiesandgentlemen,-Oneofthepracticaleffectsofthe Pastorallettersismanifestingitselfhere to-night.FatherLeonardandhis parishionersareproposingtobuildnew schoolsinconnectionwiththisdistrict -schoolswhichwillcontain,Ibelieve,. over1000children.Ihavebeen re-. questedtosaysomefewwordsuponthe occasionofsettingthisworkonfoot, andIneednottellyouhowdeeply gratifiedIamathavingtheopportunity ofdoingso.Youknowhowthenewspapershavebeenteemingwithlectures, sermons,andlettersduringthepast weeks,denouncingtheCatholicChurch ratherthandealingwiththealtogether distinctquestionofeducation.Some peoplehaveaskedmewhyIhavenot repliedtotheseeffusions; othershave congratulatedmeonnothavingdoneso. Now,IwilltellyouveryfranklywhyI havenotinterfered.Myfirstreasonis becauseIamengagedonaltogether anotherquestion;andmysecondis becausethosegentlemenaredoingmy workmuchbetterthanIcoulddoit myself,andIan,verygladindeedto seethemruntheircourse.Andthis remindsmeofLaurenceSterne.Sterne wasaProtestantclergyman,who flourishedatthebeginningofthe18th century.Likemanyclergymenofthat day,hehadmuchmotherwitandvery littlemoney.Atonetimehewasso badlyoffthathecouldscarcelyget food.Andheusedtosay,"WhenI cannotgetadinnerIcanalwaysmake aheartymealoffCheshirecheese!" Souietitueshewouldconichomelateon aSaturdaynight,havingspenta pleasantparson'sweekwithafriend, butwithnosermonpreparedfornext day.Howeverhewasneverataloss. Myoldladies,hesays,"werealways wellsatisfiedifI.gavethemagoodhot doseof"noPopery.'"WhenIhave nosermonreadyIalwayspitchinto Popery-myPoperyis.myCheshire cheese!'(Laughter.)Well,ladiesand gentleuien,1thinkyouwillagreewith methatwehavehadaveryfairsupply ofCheshirecheeselately.Now,how doesthisCheshirecheesehelpmebetter than1eauhelpmyself?Ireply,first, thereisnoRomancementlikeitinthe worldforbindingCatholicstogether; andsecondly,itismostusefulinthe wayofmakingconverts.Cheshire cheesehasacuriouseffectoucertain Protestantminds,itbringsonintermittentattacksofmitigatedritualism,and thatoftendevelopschronicRoman Catholicism,whichthedoctorstellmime isabsolutelyincurable.Duringthelast fewweeksIhavemeasured685feet8 inchesofthisCheshirecheese,aspresentedinthecolumnsofthetownand countrynewspapers.AndasIcalculate oneconverttoeverythreeyards,Ithink Ihavelittlereasontocomplain.You seewhilstIhavebeenbusywiththe educationquestion,IhavebeenemployingouropponentsinkeepingCatholics together,andinmakingconverts.Ladies andgentlemen,Ihaveaprofoundbelief inCheshirecheese.Inoneword, violenceandunfairnesshavealways,in thelongrun,served,notdamaged,the causeagainstwhichtheyhavebeen directed.(Hear,hear).Thenative mindinthiscolonyisexcessivelykeen, andknowshowtotakeaman'smeasure, andthatveryquickly.Itknowsalso howtomeasureasystembetterthan some,andtogiveitfairplay,though thatsystemmaynotbeitsown.1 believetherearethousandsofintelligent nativeswhothoughnotCatholics, re-echotheserecentwordsofBishop Moorhouse'NorcanIlookupon theendeavour,'hesaystostarve theRomanCatholicintotheacceptance ofwhathissoulabhorsasameasureof realexpediency.Thatmethodwas triedinIrelandandweallnowithwhat measureofsuccess.Ifanyonethinks itanextremelycleverandpoliticthing totrytoinjuretheRomanChurchby indirectmeans,Iwouldadvisethemto readMr.Lecky'senlightenedaccount ofthecourseandconsequencesofsuch attemptsinthe18thcentury.

sidersthemcarefully,canavoidcowing tottoconclusionteatthoi',oligregation oftheSistersofSt.Josephwouldnow beinaflourishingconditioninQueenslandbutfortheinterferenceofthe Mother-General.Withheroriginated theremovaloftheSistersfromthe diocese,andineveryinstancesuchremovalhasbeencarriedoutwithinconveniencetothepeopleandinjuryto religion.

AboutsixweeksagotheMoellerGeneralcalledontheBishoptoascertainfromhintifshemightremovethe SouthBrisbaneSisterstoAdelaide,but didtootfindhisLordshipathome.A fewdayslatertheBishopcalledonher atSouthBrisbane,whensheproposed tohimtheremovaloftheSisters.Ilis Lordshipwouldnotevenentertainthe question,allegingthathewilenetready toprovidefortheschools.TheMotherGeneralreferredtoreportsshehadheard abouttheirgoing,andsaidsiteunderstoodfromthosereportsthatitwashis intentiontheyshouldgo.TheBishop saidlieneverheardofsuchreportsbefore,thatwhatevermightbetheirorigin theywereentirelyunauthorised.lle referredtotheSistersthatwerecoming outfromEurope,andpointedoutthat theSistersofMercywouldnotbeaide toundertaketheschoolstillaftertheir arrival.

TheMother-Generalthenaskedhim ifshemightspeaktotheSistersof Mercyonthesubject,andhereplied thatshemight.

ShevisitedtheSistersofMercyand discussedwiththemthequestionof theirtakinguptheschoolstheBishop likewisesawthemandgotapromise fromthemthattheywouldtakethe schoolsatthebeginningoftheyear. AbouteightdayslatertheMettlerGeneralagaincalledontheBishopto ascertainwhentheSistersofSt.Joseph mighthopetoberelievedoftheschools. Hetoldheraboutthebeginningofthe year.Notwithstandingthisintimation fromtheBishoptheMother-Genera! decidedinwithdrawingflueSistersat theendofNovemberorearlyinDecember,takinglikewisetheHelidonSisters. Withoutgreatinconvenienceneitherof theseschoolscanbeprovidedforbefore thebeginningofnextyear.
