Thisnumberisexclusiveof therathervariablenumberof childrenreceivinginstructionat thethreemetropolitaninstitutions(Clontarf,Castledare,and St.Joseph's),whereatthemomentmorethan400childrenare housed.
Commentingonthesefigures, FatherBourkesaid:
"Accordingtothelast-publishedestimate,theeducation costperchildintheState schools(forthefinancialyear 47-48)was£226s.Costshave risensince.Butevenatthat costweareeffectinganannual economytotheStateinthe vicinityof£335,000.Thatfigure isindependentoftheexpenditureofthePublicWorksdepartmentontheinitialcostof schoolsandequipment.
"TheMinisterofEducation,on Nov.7,inreplytoaquestionin theLegislativeAssembly,stated thattheenrolmentintheState primaryandsecondaryschools was68,981.Wemaypointwith pridetothefactthatCatholics inthisStatearecarryingouta taskofeducationone-fifththe sizeofthetaskoftheState backedbytheTreasuryresources."
Atotalof1,544non-Catholic children,or11.6percentofthe totalenrolment,attendCatholic schoolswithintheArchdiocese.

TheSoviet'slong-cherisheddreamofworldconquest isonthethresholdoffulfilment.Onlyoneconsideration holdsherbackfromunleashingthedogsofwar,andthat isthedestructivepoweroftheatomwhichAmerica holds.Atthesametime,thepossessionofthisunspeakablelethal'weaponcannotberegardedasanythingMore thanatemporaryshield.Nonationhasamonopolyof scientificintelligence,andRussiamust,withtheadditional aidsoftheftandabduction,eventuallybereadyforan atomicconflict.MeanwhilethecynicalmenoftheKremlinanticipattthatthethreatofwarwillbringabouteconomiccrisesthatmayunderminetherampartsofdemocracy. Indeed,untiltheend.ofWorldWarIItheSoviethadno reasonableexpectationofsuccessinarms.ItwastheastoundingconcessionsofTeheranandYaltawhichmade militaryaggressionpossible.Ifthiscouldbecombined withtheeconomicdebilitationofthedemocracies,world dominationmighthewithinRussia'sgrasp.
Itispartlyduetothesupersedenceofeconomicover militaryproblemsinthepublicmindthatitissodifficult togearthenationstoawhole-hearteddriveofprepared- nessiActuallythethreatwhichCommunistaggression hasraisedupagainstournationalexistenceisdouble-edged. Thefightagainsttyrannyisnotbeingwagedsolelyin Korea;theissueisjoinedalsoonthewaterfront,inthe mines,andinthefactories.Thereisroomforserious speculation,inthiscountryanyhow,astowhetherthe traitorswithinthegatearenotmountingtheindustrial stageforageneralstrike,whichisnotinfrequentlythe entr'actetorevolution.Thosewhoappreciatetheinner natureofthisstrugglewillrealisethatitisnotenoughto repelCommunismwitharms.Wemustalsorootoutthe saboteursofoureconomiceffortandgivepropersupportto buildingupamaximumproductivestrength.Nomatter whattechniquesareemployedtomeetstaggeringbudgets, thiscountrymustbepreparedtofacesomeretrenchmentin thestandardofliving.Itisidletosuppose.thatthegreatestmenacewhicheverfacedhumanitycanbeoverthrown withoutgreatandsustainedsacrificesonthepartofthose whoholdthefortofliberty.

Overthreehundredyearsago, whentheFranciscanmonastery atStrabanewassackedbyan invadingarmy,thefontwas thrownintotheRiverMourne.
LastyearStrabanepeoplecame togetheranddecidedtobuilda grottoneartheruinsofthe ancientmonastery,andtosearch forthefont.
Estimatesforthebuildingof thegrottoranto£5,000;sothe localpeopledidtheworkthemselvesintheirsparetime.Skilledtradesmenamongteemhelpedtobuildthegrotto,anditcost thevolunteerssomewhatless than£1,000inmaterials.
Thebiggesttask,whenthe fontwaslocatedinthebedof theriver,wastoliftit.It weighsthreeandahalftons. Thefontwasplacedinposition inthecompletedgrotto.
BeltisRelicofSaint
InIrishhagiographythereis anumberofreferencestobelts beingpreservedastherelicsof saintswhoworethem.Oneof these,enclosedinamagnificent shrine,wasfoundinabogin Tobercurry,Co.Sligo,during turf-cuttingoperations.This Irishtreasure,oftheearlyChristianartperiod,ranksas.the mostimportantobjectaddedto theNationalmuseumcollection
inthefirsthalfofthiscentury. Itisastrikinglyhandtomepiece of8th.centuryIrishart,contemporarywiththeTarabrooch andtheArdaghChalice.The museumauthoritiescallitthe MoyloughBeltshrine.
Nothing,unfortunately,is knownofthesaintwhoworethe leathernbelt,whichisstillintact.Theshrineconsistsofa silveredbronzecasingroundthe leatherinfourclaspedsections. Theoutersidesoftheplatingaredecoratedwithpanelsofsilveredbronze,andyellowenamel andblueandwhitemillefiori glass,bybottle-greenglassstuds setinsilverframesandbybird andanimalheaddesignsexecutedinyellowenamel.

WhenIwenttoWashington, D.C.,asapostgraduatestudent ofeducation,Iwasdeeplyimpressedbythewritingsofthe lateProfessorofEduoation, FatherThomasEdwardShields, especiallyhisautobiography, "TheMakingandUnmakingof 6aDullard."Asthetitleindicates,itisthestoryofthedunce atschoolwhomadeanamefor himselfinafterlife.
Lookingintohisownlifeasa child,Dr.Shieldsmeditatedon thatuniqueexperiencewhich sawhimrisefrombeingthe dunceofthefamilytobecomeits chiefpride.Hisschoolingwas notasuccess.Theprevailing methodofinstructionwasrecitation,arotememorywasthe waytosuccess.Hefailedin that,andwastakenfromschool becausetheteacherscoulddo nothingforhim.Withthezeal ofareformer,heturnedfrom memorisingandbuiltthehope ofthechildonideas.Ideasare functional,theyleadtheselfactivity,theytendtoexpress themselves.Hewrites:

TheShields'philosophyof educationcomesfromhisown experience.Unabletoswallowtherote-memorydrillsof school,he.grewlistlessandindifferentandwastakenfrom schoolbrandedasadunceanda dullard.Throughworkingwith hishandsonafarmhewascompelledtothinkproblemsoutfor himself.Hissuccessinthose practicaldifficultiesgaveh'm self-confidence,whichgraduallygrewandawakenedhimtofull life.Theidealhesetbefore thereligiousteachersofAmerica whoflockedtohislecturesas ProfessorofEducationwas: "Thetempleoflifeandmind canbebuiltbynoneotherthan bytheinwarddweller."
Isawthatphilosophytranslatedintoactioninthepractice schoolattachedtotheCatholicEverythingUniversityatWashington. inthecurriculum wasplannedwiththeaimof makingthechildthink.Withintheschooldayitwasnotconsideredawasteoftimetohave afewminutes'silencewherein theparticularexamenofthereligiouslifewasadaptedtothe child.Charactercountsmuch morethanbrainsintheconduct oflife,andalltrueeducationis self-education;itmustbebuilt bytheinwarddweller.

SINGAPORE,Jan.18(NC).-Moslemfeeling isstillrunninghighoverthecaseofBerthaHertogh,13-year-oldDutchgirl,whowastakenfrom herMoslemfostermotherandreturnedtoher mother,aDutchCatholic,byahighcourtdecisionhere.
Resentmentoverthisdecision ledtomobviolenceherein which14peoplewerekilledand about155injuredlastmonth. Amongtheinjuredwasa Frenchpriest,whoisnowout ofhissickbedbutretainsscar acrosshisforeheadandstill complainsofheadachesandinabilitytoreadforanylength oftime.
Theappelatecourt,which openedareviewofthecaseat thetimeoftheriotandthen postponedthehearing,isnow scheduledtoresumehearingsin April.
Meanwhile,Moslemsarecollectingfundstofightthecase totheparliamentifnecessary.TheMalayleadershaveletit beunderstoodtheywillnotlet thecasedropshortofpar- liament.
Some400ofthe1,000people arrestedbyauthoritiesherein connectionwiththeriotsare stillbeingdetainedfortrial. Thosearrestedincludedsix Moslemleaders.
IthasdefinitelybeenestablishedthatlocalCommunists triedtousetheriotsasanoc-
CatholicsSubsidise ProtestantSchools (NC).-Themunicipalcouncilof Fribourg,apredominantlyCatholiccityandseatofafamous Catholicuniversity,hasgranted asubsidytothelocalProtestantschool.Approximately$50 foreachofthe410pupilsthere wasgranted.
