"Ithasatwo-foldfunction,"chairman,Bishop JohnO'Loughlin,M.S.C. explained.

EncountersecretaryteamwhowereinPerthlastweekend,lefttoright,FatherJosephMcCANN, Oblate,KenandJuliaGEE.Father McCannisoriginallyfromW.A.,wasfora timeontheOblatemissionteaminLesmurdieandforthepastfouryearshas beenintheMarriageEncountermovement.

Some600coupleshaveattendedMarriageEncounterweekends sincetheircommencementinW.A.lastNovember,andthelocal movementappearstohavethefastestgrowthrateinAustralia.

Thisfactcametolight whenthenationalexecutive secretaryteam-Father JoeMcCann,O.M.I.and KenandJuliaGee-were inPerthtoconductthefirst localtrainingcoursefor teamsinW.A.

Fourteencoupleswere trainedforMarriageEncounterworkandtheywill jointhe28localcouples whohavealreadybeen trainedintheEasternStates.

Followingtheirtraining fromFridaynighttoMondaynight,heldattheRedemptoristRetreatHouse, thecoupleswillwritetheir talksunderthesupervision ofmoreexperiencedcouples,forlaterpresentation atweekends.

Itwasalsoanouncedthat JohnandPamelaCattallni andFatherJimO'Brien wouldactasaunitexecutiveforWA.,forming partofthenationalbody withsimilarrepresentation fromQueensland,NewSou. thWales,VictoriaandTasmania.

Upto20couplesare neededforeachMarriage Encounterweekend,attendingtodutiessuchasbabysitting,hostessing.catering

andotherdomesticarrangementsforthesmoothfunctioningoftheweekend.

Sofar,25weekendshave beenheldinW.A.inboth metropolitanandcountry centresasfarafieldasAlbanyandKalgoorlie. In1978itisplannedto haveuptosixweekends permonth.

7,000COUPLES

Sofar,some7,000couplesthroughoutAustraliaare believedtohaveattended MarriageEncountersince itsinceptionthreeyearsago.

ThepresentationofmarriageisessentiallyCatholic inexpressionbutmanynonCatholicsattendtheweekends.

Whereinterestisshown, themovementdevelops weekendswithanAnglican orotherdenominationalapproach,butstillworking alongthelinesoftheMarriageEncountermovement.

Themovementhasasits goaltomakegoodmarriagesbetter.

Agoodmarriageisdescribedasoneinwhichthe partnerswishtostaytogether.

IfacouplehavethatNIsicdesire,Mardi*Encounterisoffered.

lf,ontheotherhand,a couplearenotsureoftheir wishtostaytogether,they areadvisedtoseeksome otherformofmarriage counsellingorassistance.

Thoseinvolvedinthemovementsaythattheyare notexperiencedinthefield ofbrokenmarriagesand leavethatworktoothers whileconcentratingonthe alreadygoodmarriagesso thatthenextgenerationof marriedpeoplewillhave comefromasoundbackground.

Peoplewhohaveattended MarriageEncounterareurgedtobecomemoreinvolvedintheirlocalparish. Also,inSydney,astart hasbeenmadewithcouples attendingseniorhighschol classestocontributetheir outlookinconjunctionwith thereligiouseducationclasses.

ShewasspeakingatthestartofAustralia's firstnationalRighttoLifeconferenceMended byabout180people.

CANBERRAREJECTION

TheFederalGovernment'sweekendrejectionofproposalsforaCanberraabortionclink withinhospitalgroundswasreportedtoconference.

SpeakershaileditasavictoryfortheRight toLifemovement'sprotests. Theyalsoapplaudedthenewsthatthe governmentwouldcontinuethebanonaprivateabortionclinicplannedbyagroupcalled PopulationServicesInternational.

Dr.Gerstersaidthatviolenceofallkind wasruiningAmerica,andwoulddothesame whereveritwastolerated.

Rape,homicide,andchild-batteringwere increasinginAmericaatthesametimeasthe increaseinabortions.

"Theabortionlobbyclaimedchildabuse woulddisappearwheneverychildwasawanted child.Yetchildabusewasthreetimesashigh duringthefirstthreeyearsofabortionon demandinAmerica,"sheadded.

OnemillionU.S.teenagersbecamepregnant in1976,including122,000girlsunder16.

"Highschool-girlabortionsarecommonin NewYorkCity,whichhasbeenpraisedforits modem,enlightenedanitudetowardsteenage sex,"Dr.Gerstersaid.

"Lastyear18,000schoolgirlshadabortions there-ohmatschooldunngthelunch-hour. andoftenwithouttheirparents'permission. 33,000schoolgirlsbecamepregnant,and35,000 uhoolchildrencontractedvenerealdisease.

"Amtheyounghappywiththeirnewfound freedom?Ofcoursetheyare!Thatiswhy teenagesuicideshaveincreasedtwoandahalf timessince1966."
