PRETORIA(NC)ASouthAfricancourt hasacquittedaleading spokesmanfortheSouthAfricanbishopsof allthreechargeshe facedoverthepossessionordistributionof bannedmaterials.

IfhecourtsaidthatDo,ntnicanFatherArnoldDominicScholten(47)general secretaryoftheSouthernAfricanBishops'Conference, wasnotshownbytheGovernmenttohavewillfully committedtheallegedoffen-

cesortohavebeennegligentinensuringthatthe materialallegedlyinhispossessionwasbanned.

InFatherScholten's.trial inmid-July,theDutch-born priestdidnotdenyhaving hadthebannedliteraturein hispossession.

"RELIGIOUS"

Butthedefencecontendedthatthematerialswere ofareligiousnatureand thereforenotlegallysubject tobanning.andthat,inany case,FatherScholtenhad exercisedthereasonable carethatcouldhavebeen expectedofhimandcould notbeexpectedtohave beenawareofthehannings.

Thefirstchargecame whenhewasarrestedlast Aprilforpossessionofa pamphletpublishedbythe ChrisianInstituteofSouth Africa.entitled"SouthAfrica-APoliceState."

Ithadbeenbannedthe

previousSeptember.

FatherScholtensaidthat hehadreceivedandkept thepamphletinthenormal courseofhisdutiesandwas unawareofitsbanning.

Afterthat,hesaidathis trial,hehadlearnedhowto obtaintheofficialgovernmentpublicationinwhich bansareannouncedandorderedasubscriptiontoitby mail.

Theothertwocharges werethathesubsequently distributedtwobannedpublications-"TheVoice," and"TortureinSouthAfrid."

Butinoneofthesecases thedateofthebanwasonly fourdaysbeforethedocumentwasallegedlyfoundin themailsentbyFather Scholten.

Intheothercasetheban occurredfivedaysbefore thedocumentwasallegclly mailed.

Educaliontax rebateurged byprincipals' chairman

SYDNEY.-The chairmanoftheHeadmasters'Conferenceof Independent Schools, Mr.PaulMcKeown, calledlastweekfora taxrebatesystemthatremovedsomeofthefinancialburdenonparents sendingchildrentoprivateschools.

Ataxconcessionalrebateonschoolfeesthat coveredthegapbetween thepercapitagrantand theaveragecostofeducatingachildinaGovernmentschoolwould heagreathelptoparents,hesaid.

Mr.McKeownsaid thattheFederalGovernmentwasinconsistent inpayingallstudentfees attertiarylevelbutnot allfeesinschools. ThreethousandfivehundredSistersof MercythroughoutAustraliahavebeencalled ontotakemoreactionforsocialjusticeas partofarenewaloftheirreligiouslife.

Thecallwasoneoffive proposalsputforwardby thefirstnationalassembly ofthebiggestorderofCatholicSistersinAustralia.

Theweek-longassembly, whichbroughtmorethan 800MercySisterstoMelbournefromNewZealand, Papua-NewGuineaand aroundAustralia.endedon SaturdayatSt.Aloysius' College,NorthMelbourne. Itwasorganisedbythe ConferenceoftheSistersof MercyofAustralia. Theconferenceisthefirst nationalorganisationofthe order,whichhas17separateconstituentgroups.

TOUGHCHALLENGES

SisterPatriciaPakPoy, ofAdelaide,executivedirectoroftheconference,said thattheassemblyhadfaced uptosometoughchallenges fromspeakersandparticipants.

"Weweretold,forexample,thatourlife,ourvows andourworkmightnot havemuchimpactonAustraliansnowadays,"shesaid.

"SomeofourSistersfelt thatwehaddriftedaway fromtheorder'svisionof caringforthepoor,thesick andtheuneducated.

"Someevensuggestedthat ourpropertyandprestige madeuspartofoursodety'sinjusticestogroupslike Aborigines,migrantsand women."

OnSeptember20,1967,thefirstsynodopenedto discusstheproblemspresentedtoitbythePope:the revisionofcanonlaw,thequestionofdoctrine,seminaries,mixedmarriagesandliturgy. Thesynodclosedamonthlater. Itbecameapparentthatthefirstattemptatmaking thesynodworkhadmetasnag.Theprogramme wastooambitious.Theagendawastoolargefor onemeeting.Latersynodswouldstudyfewersubjects.

Thesecondsynod,in1969,wastotackletheproblemsthatcametolightinthefirstmeetingin1967. Theagendacentredonthequestionofgettingalarge andcumbersomestructurelikeasynodofftheground. SincetennisreportshavebeenappearinginTheRecordduring thepostfewyears,manyinquirieshavebeenreceivedaboutthe activitiesoftheWestAustralianCatholicLawnTennisAssociation.

Asaresultanumberof newmembershavejoined.

Tennisgenerallyhasbeen increasinginpopularity,becauseoftheexposuregiven bythemediatoleading players,theintroductionof colourtelevisionandthe hugeinvestmentinadvertisingbyleadingcorporations.

MostCatholicchildren havetheopportunityto learnthegameatschoolbut onlyafewcarryoninto seniortennisandonlya smallpercentageofthat numberentertheranksof Catholictennis.

Manyparentswillrecall thatinpreviousyearsCatholictenniswasthecentre ofparishactivity.

Whilethisisnowimpracticableinsomeinnersuburbanparishes,duetothedemandsofschoolspaceand shortageofrealestate,parishesinmiddleandouter suburbsshouldbeseeking touseallavailablespace.

Ifparishlandiswell planned,provisionshouldbe madeforcourtsattheparishschoolsinthefuture, whichwouldallowchildren totakepartinawholesome activity.

Ithasbeenourexperiencethatschoolsprefertheir groundstobeusedinthe weekendtohelptoprevent vandalism.

First,theaimoftheassociationistopromoteCatholictennisinanatmosphereconducivetogood Christianliving.

Itencouragesparishesto playandsocialiseamong themselvesaswellasagainst andamongotherparishes.

CARNIVAL

Thehighlightoftheseasonistheinterstatecarnivalwhenplayershavethe chancetorepresenttheir StateintheAustralianCatholicLawnTennisAssociationchampionshipsandcarnival.

Thefirstactivityofthe yearisthemixedpennants competition,startinginearly MarchandendinginJune. Thisisfollowedbyacabaretduringwhichthewinningteamsreceivetheirpennants.

Thewinterpennants(currentlyinprogress)startin JulyandendinlateSeptember/earlyOctober.

Bythistimetheplayers areinformandreadyto competeintheStatechampionships,heldinNovember.

Precedingthis,inOctober,isthejuniortournament namedtheAndyFanowrios MemorialTournament,in memoryofthelateAndy Fanowrios,player,coach andassociationcommittee member.

Theyearendswiththe nationalcarnival,whichis heldfromDecember25to January1,andinwhich,in additiontothetennisisconductedaNationalQueen Quest.

W.A.hasbeenwellrepresentedinthequesteach yearandtheassociationnormallyrunsafunction,eitheraballordinner,in whichtheW.A.Queenis selected.

Anothercabaretisheld inNovemberatwhichthe winterpennantsandchampionshipwinnersarepresentedwiththeirprizes.

Inaddition,theassociationactsashosttocountry clubsandisguestatmetropolitanW.A.LawnTennisAssociationclubs.

Littletennisisplayedin JanuaryandFebruary,duringthehottestpartofthe summer.

Nomemberisobligedto commithimselftoallfunctionsinthelightoffamily commitments.
