InhishomilyataconcelebratedMassintheSistineChapel,thePopequicklyaddedthattheneedfor theChristianmessagewas "todaymorepressingand anguishedthanever."

TheopeningMass,markingthefirsttimethatthe Popeaskedallsynodmemberstoconcelebratewith him,inauguratedthemonthlongsynod.Itwascalledby thePopetodiscuss"CatecbesisinOurDaywithSpecialReferencetotheCatechesisofChildrenand Youth."

Speakingaboutobstacles tocatechesis(religiouseducation),thePopesaidinhis sermonthat"fromahuman pointofviewourmindis filledwithasenseofdismay whichalmostparalysesall energy."
