BISHOPS'VIEWOF MIXEDMARRIAGE

InaforthcomingstatementonmixedmarriagetheAustralian Bishopsurgeyoungpeopleto"seriouslyconsiderchoosingapartnerof theirownfaith,"butoffsetthiswithanacknowledgementofthe couple'snaturalrighttomarry.

Thestatement,toheissued-nextTuesday,wasapprovedattheAugustmeetingoftheBishops'Conference.

Specifically,itiswritten tosupportPopePaulVI's documentonmixedmarriage,issuedin1970.

Historically,however,it willbeseeninstarkcontrasttothelasttimethe AustralianBishopsspoke onthematter,in1937,at theirplenarycouncilmeeting.

Thestatementtakesfor grantedthatasteadypercentage(halformoreof totalmarriages)ofCatholicsaremarryingnon-Catholicsandemphasisesthe needforChristianmotivationratherthanthenegativedangers.

CONTRAST

Thus,thepresentdocumentcontrastswiththe sternstepsthattheAustralianhierarchytookforty yearsagoinanaggressive attempttoforestallwhat wasfelttobeanalarming increaseinmixedmarriages.

KeytothenewAustralianapproachisthestatementbyPopePaulin1970 thattheChurch"discourages"mixedmarriage.

Traditionalcanonlaw statedformerlythatthe "Churchmostseverelyprohibitsmixedmarriage."

Indicativeofthemoodof 1937arethenumberofstiff decreesthathavebeenquietlydroppedinthemeantime.

Mixedmarriageswhich tillthenhadbeencelebratedatsidealtarswould henceforthbecelebratedin thesacristyorthepresbytery.Thelawlapsedinthe late1940's.

TheAustralia-widerequirementthatfivehoursof CatholicinstructionbegivenwasalteredinW.A.to twelvehalfhoursandhas lapsedpartlyduetothe physicalimpossibilityofa priestmaintainingsucha scheduleamongotherduties.
