ABORIGINES9EMSR BRISBANE.-Aboriginalhealth,land rights,homeownership,educationand unitywereamongsubjectsdiscussedatthe recent Queensland conference attended by200membersofthe blackcommunityfrom Queensland,Northern TerritoryandN.S.W., sponsoredbytheAboriginalandIslanderCatholicCouncil.

Amongresolution,ap- provedwerethoseonland rights,compensationfor dispossessionandthemanufactureofAboriginalartifactsoverseas.

InadditiontoArchbishopRush,whoopenedthe conferenceandothervisitingbishops,prominent amongthosetakingpart weretheAboriginalSenatorBonnerandFatherPatrickDodson,Australia's firstandonlyAboriginal priest.

"Virtually,whatthat meansislittlemorethan isactuallyhappeningatthe moment,"hesaid.

"Governmentsnowset asideacertainamountof moneyfromtheirbudgets forwhatistermedAboriginaladvancement.

"But,unfortunately,itis anallocationbyGovernmentsandwehavetodependontheirattitudeand whateversympathythey haveonAboriginalcauses.

Althoughtheprogressof theW.A.C.L.T.A.hasbeen mostmarkedinthepast fewseasons,thelackofa centralvenuehaspossibly preventedanevenmore dramaticincreaseinpopularity.

Benefitsaccruingfrom acentralassociationvenue wouldincludegreaterinvolvementinW.A.C.L.T.A. activities,forexample, pennantsandsocialmatches againstotherassociated clubs.

Thisshouldenableassociationmemberstohave theirownidentityintenniscirclesandthusassist theflowofschool-leavers totheranksoftheassociation.

In1972hewaselected treasureroftheSt.Joseph'sQueenParkTennis Clubandthatyearteamed withGaryWorsdell,SharonAndrews(neeRaux)and MargaretMetfilltowinthe W.A.C.L.T.A.BGrade mixedpennants. Thenhewaselectedtreasureroftheassociation,a positionheheldforthree years(1973to1975). Hejoinedtheexecutive in1974andhandledall

year. During1974hemarried KerryDugan,association playerofnote,andthey areafamilywhohave takenanactivepartinassociationaffairs.

Kerryhasanoutstanding tennisrecordintheassociation.Shehaswonthe ladies'singlesanddoubles severaltimes,hasrepresentedW.A.withdistinctioninnationalcarnivals, usuallygainingselectionin Australianrepresentative sides.

SheandPeterwonthe associationmixedtitlesin 1973-74and1975.76and wererunners-uptoPatPike andColleenJohnsonin 1972-73and1974-75. Thesetwopairshaveset thestandardformixed tennisintheW.A.C.L.T.A. overthepastfiveorsix years

Theseason1973-74was verysuccessfulforPeter andKerry;withPeter's sister,Maree,andMichael BrennantheywontheA Grademixedpennantsfor St.Joseph'sQueensPark. AswellasbeingW.A.C. L.T.A.treasurerin1975, Peterwaselectedpresident ofhisclubQueensPark.

ThenameMesserisatheaccountingforthenathouseholdwordinCatholicionalcarnivalinPerththat BRANCH.
