Gosnellssale ofChurchand schoolcomplex

OnoscaleunprecedentedfortheArchdioceseofPerth,the GosnellsparishfacilitiesoretobesoldtotheCityofGosnellstoenable relocation.

Thisweekanagreement willbesignedbywhichthe CityofGosnellswillpay $425;000forthe2.1acre siteonAlbanyHighway. alongwiththechurch,presbyteryandschoolbuildings currentlyonthesite.

Theparishwillbeentitledtotakeallthechurch furnishings,altarsandother fittings,plusthestained glasswindows.

Itisbelievedthatthe churchbuildingmaybe convertedtoalibraryby thecity.

Thisweek'sagreementis theresultoftwelvemonths ofnegotiation.

InJanuary,1977,with theconcurrenceofFather ThomasPrendiville,parish priestatGosnells,the ArchdiocesanChancellor, FatherPeterMcCrann,was authorisedbyArchbishop Goodytoexplorethepossibilitiesofasaletothe shire.

Principalreasonsinfluencingsuchaninitiative were; Theincreasingtraffic hazardonAlbanyHighway atthechurchandschoolentrance,makingitdifficult notonlytoenterthesiteon someoccasionsbutalso impossibletomakeanexit inpeaktrafficconditions.

Theacceptedinadequacyofthesitetocater

forgrowingschoolneeds. Theunsatisfactorysitingonabusyroadofthe presbyteryanditslimitationsforaccommodating morethanonepriest.

Thepresbyteryshowedits limitationslastyearwhen theproposaltohaveasecondpriestatGosnellshad tobeabandonedbecauseit wastoosmallandfora timeitwasfeltthatitmight benecessarytobuyahomeunitresidencesomedistancefromthechurch.

Theapproachtotheshire wasfacilitatedbythefact thatsinceJune,1973,the CatholicChurchhadowned nineacresonCorfieldStreet fortheeventualrelocation oftheschool.

WithaCommonwealth grantplansweremadeto movetheupperprimary gradesforthecommencementof1978.

Newschoolbuildingsare nearlycompletedforthe openingthisweek. Withoutasale,theschool wasfacedwiththefactthat forsometimeinthefuture activitieswouldhavetobe splitbetweenthetwosites.

Asaresultofthechurch's approach,theshirereplied withaninitialofferof $375,000.

Diocesanandparishauthoritiesfeltthatthiswas insufficienttoreplacethe

requiredfacilities.

InDecember,1977,the shireincreaseditsofferby $50.000andthisisconsideredbytheparishtobean acceptableoffer.

LastSundaynightaspecialgeneralmeetingofthe parishionerswasheldin thechurchandthevastmajorityvotedinfavourof thesale.

Theproposednewcentre oftheparishwillbeonthe nine-acresiteatthecorner ofSouthernRiverRoad andCorfieldStreet.

Theoldwoodenchurch, whichwasbuiltin1918, willbemovedtothenew siteandwillbecomeacommunityhall-thuspartof thehistorywillbepreserved.

Gosnellsbecameaparish initsownrightin1949.

Theschoolandpresbyterywerebuiltin1953and thenewchurchwasbuiltin 1963.

Duetoproduction problems,thesizeofThe Recordhasbeenreduced letnporarilytoeight pages.Thenormalsize willherestorednerd weekor,atthelatest, thefollowingweek.

Onitsownbehalf,ACR haspromotedtheproduction anddistributionoffilms dealingwithitsconcerns, sponsoredseminarsandorganisedstudytours.

Aswellastheseactivities. someProjectCompassion fundsareear-markedto assistinemergencyrelief.

Immediateaidisgivento victimsofwarsandnatural disasterssuchastyphoons, floods,droughtsandearthquakes.

Sometimesmajorappeals forthesefundsarcmounteds-fotexampletheLebanonandItalianearthquake appeals.
